T

he premier event of the season has quietly risen to become one of the top consumer golf expos in the country. The annual Denver Golf Expo is the Rocky Mountain’s hottest golf industry event, supported by the Colorado Section of the PGA, Colorado Golf Association, the Colorado Junior Golf Association, and the Colorado Women’s Golf Association.

These united partnerships create the unique golf experience that the Denver Golf Expo attendees have long appreciated. It is one of the reasons the show has grown so quickly; the Colorado golf industry is truly present and strongly involved in the event production.

In 2015, the Denver Golf Expo continues to bring in quality exhibitors, bring back the popular exhibits, create more freebies, and more excitement for golfers. Golf retailers, golf-related companies, golf courses, golf resorts and hotels, Colorado PGA members, Colorado Golf Association members, golf tournament directors, and 12,000 of your golfing buddies gather at the Denver Golf Expo to enjoy the industry’s best offerings – all under one roof!

015 marks the centennial anniversary of the CGA which plans to kick-off a year-long celebration at this year’s Denver Golf Expo. Come be part of the celebration which includes the unveiling of a brand new CGA logo! Visit the CGA booth to receive special gift for all association members, in addition to incentives for non-members to join. Opportunities to get more involved with the centennial celebration will be available throughout the year, culminating with a Century of Golf Gala, tentatively scheduled for November 21, 2015. At that event, a

number of Colorado golf's all-time luminaries will be honored, and both the history and future of golf in the state will be celebrated. In addition, the CGA will hold a seasonlong fundraising event that will support the Colorado Golf Foundation and benefit programs that foster youth development through golf. That event will be called "100 Holes for 100 Years", and participants will raise money through donations pledged for a personalized golf-related activity centering around the number 100. For instance, a person could play 100 holes in a day, or in another set period of time. Or participants

can add any twist they'd like to the event, as long as it involves the number 100. "The goal is to raise awareness and engage the golf community to play golf for a purpose," said CGA executive director Ed Mate. "It will get the whole state involved. Why we're doing all this is to advance golf in Colorado," Mate said. "It's not just a celebration, but that's the driving force behind it all. We want to seize on the centennial to position the CGA, the community of golf and the Colorado Golf Foundation for the next 100 years. We want to make sure that the game not only will be around, but will

Unique indoor golf facility offers golfers the ability to practice and play rounds of golf in ideal conditions all year round

A

PG Links Indoor Golf, located in the Arapahoe Crossing shopping center in Aurora, is a unique indoor golf facility that offers the ability to practice and play rounds of golf, in ideal conditions, all year round. This 12,000 square foot indoor golf training center is the first of its kind in the state. With 16 hitting bays, a 1,200 square foot Tour Play putting green and chipping area along with four private rooms for small training groups, golfers of all ages and abilities can practice all aspects of their golf game. APG Links Indoor Golf offers a state of the art simulated driving range for practice and the opportunity to play 18 holes of golf – in half the time on an outdoor course - on 1 of 30 different championship courses including Prairie Dunes, Quail Hollow, Doral’s Blue Monster, Hazeltine, and Carnoustie, to name a few. The simulated driving range provides all the swing data a serious golfer would need including club head speed, ball speed, back and side spin, carry and roll distances. The launch monitors and video cameras let you analyze your swing just like those seen on TV. The precise measuring equipment captures important swing data for instant feedback, aiding golfers in immediately correcting swing mistakes. APG has tested their launch monitors outdoors and they measure to within a foot of what laser range finders measure. An indoor facility has many advantages. Practicing in-

doors with launch monitors allows for precise ball flight, making for highly accurate swing data analysis. Instead of using worn range balls, patrons are recommend to bring their specific golf ball or a few different golf balls to test which ball performs the best and most consistent for them. These systems take guesswork out of the analysis of each and every swing It is also a great way for the beginner golfer to get the feel of playing on the course without the pressure of keeping up with the pace of play, the crusty old ranger or the

group of rude golfers behind you pushing you to hurry through the course. With Touring Pros and College golf programs using simulators, launch monitors and video cameras to improve their swings, the indoor training and learning centers are the “NOW” way to learn and improve your swing. Tests have proven that people learn twice as fast using this process. The hitting bays at APG Links can be rented in half hour increments. APG Links offers a variety of affordable memberships and lesson programs that fit a range of schedules and budgets. The team at APG Links includes a full staff of teaching pros with well over 50 years of combined experience and three certified club fitters who can assure your clubs are properly fit to you and your swing. APG Links’ Top Swing Golf School has introduced a junior program for ages 4-18. Structured lessons and practice programs aid in development of a proper golf swing and support the skills needed to achieve success on the course and possibly earn a spot on a school golf team. Winter golf leagues are starting for all ages and genders. Come visit us and receive a free 15 minute demo to see what APG Links Indoor Golf has to offer for your golf game. Off the Beaten Golf Trail

Mussel burgh Links Ol d Course is surrounded by a race track for horses. By Peter Hellman Divot Magazine Contributing Writer

A

fter one has played the big named courses in Scotland and Ireland, what is a golfer to do? Well, there are certainly other countries to explore, many of which have better weather, more interesting food and wine and in some cases new languages to learn. I love golf in Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Argentina and New Zealand. Colombia, France, Sweden, Malaysia and Mexico are not too bad either. But, if I were to plan a trip for myself this summer, here is what I would do! I would return to either Scotland or Ireland and play the smaller, less known, out-ofthe-way courses where the likelihood of finding golf tourists is pretty slim. The Open is on the Old Course at St. Andrews this year and that has made it and many of the most popular courses unavailable. Another advantage to this sort of trip is cost. To play Kingsbarns, Carnoustie, Old Head or Royal County Down, you will pay at least $350, $260, $250 and $300 respectively. On the less well know but well respected courses, your average cost could be as little as $45 to $100 per round. Even the accommodations will be 20% to 30% less expensive and food and drink at the local pubs and restaurants will seem like a

26

bargain when compared to the “plat de jour” in St. Andrews or Killarney. So, if I have peaked your interest, here is what I would arrange for myself and my golfing buddies (or perhaps just my wife and me) in two of my favorite regions in Scotland and Ireland.

DIVOTMagazine.com l Winter Issue 2015

I sug gest you play it as old Tom Morris did. Hickory shafted cl ubs are available to rent (about $50). Scotland – East Lothian: This area east of Edinburgh a few miles is home to Muirfield, which is part of the British Open Rota and where non-member tee times are extremely limited and green fees expensive. It is also home to the exclusively private Archerfield Links Club (Fidra & Dirleton courses) and The Renaissance

Club. But, there is plenty of golf for the more budget minded golfer who still demands great courses for his money. Here are just a few that you might consider and are all within a range of $60 to $100 per round – Craigielaw, Dunbar, Glen, Gullane No. 2 or No. 3, Kilspindie, Longniddry (nice combination of Links and Parkland),

Carne Golf Club

Book your 2015 Golf Vacation to...

North Ber wick West Links Luffness New and Whitekirk. For those interested in the history of golf, make sure to play the 9-hole Musselburgh Links Old Course. Its location is a bit weird as it is surrounded by a race track for horses. However, it is thought to be the oldest continuously played golf course in the world (we are talking 16th century) and hosted the early British Open tournaments between 1874 and 1889. I suggest you play it as old Tom Morris did. Hickory shafted clubs are available to rent (about $50). Green fees are even a better bargain at about $20. Oh, don’t forget your knickers. There are many good places well within a traveling golfer’s budget to stay. The largest of the towns in the area is North Berwick. It has several good guest house and small hotels to choose from. Another favorite of mine is the little town of Gullane. North Berwick is also the home one of the best and still reasonably priced (about $145) courses in Scotland – North Berwick West Links. Spend the money to play it. You won’t be sorry. Ireland – Counties Sligo & Mayo: In 2012, my associate Neil MacKinnon and I took a group of golfers on a whirlwind golf tour. We played courses in Dublin, Northern Ireland and along the North and West coast of Ireland. I was particularly charmed by the areas of Sligo and Mayo Counties. Here again are a handful of courses as good as any in the country but seldom played by outsiders. They are budget friendly too. Here are some you may want on your itin-

erary – County Sligo (commonly called Rosses Point), Enniscrone, Strandhill, Carne and Connemara (actually in County Galway). You could also add a couple of fine parkland courses such as Westport, Castlebar and Ballina. Ballina, by the way, is a good place to stay. It is small enough to feel friendly and still have plenty of fine pubs and restaurants. We stayed at the Downhill Inn a small hotel. It had a bar with a jovial barkeep, which was probably its best feature. It is a bit of drive to Carne Golf Club so you may want to stay in one of the many charming inexpensive guest houses along the way. If you continue on to the beautiful university town of Galway, stop to play Westport and the fine 27-hole Connemara Championship. The landscape in this sparsely populated area of Ireland is stunning and the dunes on some of these links courses are enormous.

Golf courses off the famous golf trails of Scotland and Ireland may not be the ones we hear about nor the ones that appear on our bucket lists, but when you reach that point in your golf travels that it’s more about playing the game then checking courses off your list, you are ready for some true fun. SO - GO PLAY!

Nice Drive

Divot Magazine Auto Review it the best in its class. This year the RX 450h gets a few updates including standard seven-inch display audio, new wheels and paint, optional HID and LED headlamps, and an updated navigation system. The system has four modes of operation from low-speed pure EV to Normal to Eco and Sport and the RX 450h can operate in electric-only or gas-engine-only modes as well as a combination of both.

s a golf magazine publisher, the typical test drive vehicle usually includes luxury sedans or sleek little convertible sports cars. So it’s always a nice surprise to review a

luxury crossover like the Lexus RX 450h! Not only is it nice having space for your 3 playing partners and their bags, but this Hybrid beauty gets the fuel mileage of a four-cylinder sedan while providing the power of a V8. The combined mpg is 29 for AWD and 30 mpg for FWD making

T

his vehicle is one of the very few remaining true SUVs that captures the spirit of true offroad enthusiasts. The rugged look of this 2015 4Runner isn't an accident or made up for marketing purposes. The 4Runner has had the same basic rugged look for years. It rides high and the proportions are bold. Inside it’s the same basic approach. All the controls are big and laid out in an uncluttered way, and the controls and gauges are framed with simple but smart materials. A 4.0-liter V-6 engine, now the only engine offered, makes 270 horsepower and 278 pounds of torque feel plenty 28

strong and quick off the line and at highway speeds. Fuel is estimated at 17/22 mpg for RWD models, and 17/21 mpg for FWD versions. Overall, the Toyota 4Runner is more responsive than what you might expect. Steering feel and maneuverability are solid and at low speeds especially, the 4Runner handles with better precision and control than you might expect from such a big, heavy model. The 4Runner is relatively refined inside providing a tight, quiet highway cruising experience, with a reasonably smooth ride and very little road or wind noise. The front seats look and feel great with the available perforated-leather upholstery, and will fit the size and shape of any golfer. A

It should be noted that there’s no mechanical driveshaft between front and rear leaving nothing for the driver to do to engage rear wheel drive... Not exactly great for off-roading, but very good for those drivers who just want it to work when the time is right. The exterior design of the RX blends very well in the burbs while maintaining a look and feel that it’s capable of going

anywhere, and at any time. One thing is certain, wherever you go, the driver and passenger are sure to be happy because the accommodations are plush. The RX comes standard with a laundry list of creature comforts, and plenty of space. The standards include bird’s eye maple and dual automatic climate control as well as heated front seats. Also included is a Display Audio with Rear Backup Camera, a 12-speaker sound system or optional 15-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound system with 330 watts and 0.1 percent total harmonic distortion. Also packed in is Apple’s Siri Eyes Free Mode technology to connect with compatible devices and phones. The Homestead Golf Course

Located one mile west of Kipling on West Hampden Ave in southwest Lakewood is The Homestead Golf Course. Opened by the City of Lakewood in 2002, Homestead is an award-winning Championship short course known for it’s challenging play and the requirement of every club in your bag. This beautifully sculptured course is 5,100 yards, par 65, and has a links-style course that evokes being in Scotland. The course features 200-foot drops in elevation, taking golfers from a deep bowl to high vistas, where they can enjoy panoramic views of the Denver skyline and Front Range. Signature views include Red Rocks to the west, city views to the east, Pikes Peak to the south and Longs Peak to the north. Often called a bridge between executive and championship, Homestead’s other features include three lakes, a spectacular bridge between the #17 tee and green, and lots of wildlife including birds, deer, coyotes, bunnies, ducks and assorted water fowl. #13 is also a golfer favorite, boasting a 360-degree panoramic view of the course and surrounding natural area.

stead boasts a world-class practice facility, including a full length driving range, natural grass hitting areas and several chipping and putting green areas. Other unique features of Homestead include rustic log fences, creek

The Homestead Golf Course

Featured Course In its 21st year of operation, Fox Hollow retains its reputation as one of the premier public golf courses in the State of Colorado. With five sets of tee boxes, all players are faced with numerous shot difficulties, challenges, and rewards. Fox Hollow always promises to be one of the best conditioned courses in the area, as well as a fair test for the use of probably every club in your bag. Because Fox Hollow is located within the expansive open space of Lakewood’s Bear Creek Lake Park, outside interference is minimized with very limited housing and vehicle noise. This results in a creation of an atmosphere that compares to playing at a private country club.

Fox Hollow Clubhouse winds throughout the back nine, a windmill, and the historic Mt. Carbon area, which was used for carbon mining to support the war efforts during World War 2. What really makes Homestead a special place is the people. From the golfers who have played weekly for the past 13 years to the smiling, friendly staff, Homestead prides itself in creating a comfortable atmosphere for all. Homestead staff is known for their exemplary customer service, where everyone is treated as family. Homestead has won numerous awards in which they are recognized as a Top Course for Seniors and Top Course for Women. In addition to it’s fantastic play, great staff, and convenient location via C-470, I-70 or Hampden Avenue, Homestead has an award-winning restaurant, The Homestead Grill. Located in the magnificent, rustic clubhouse, The Homestead Grill evokes the delicious fare and tradition of the old west. Open daily (weather permitting) The Homestead Grill is proud

to be a meeting place for both golfers and non-golfers alike. Parties, banquets and events held at The Homestead Grill are always guaranteed to be a good time! Additionally, summers at The Homestead are a favorite time, with golfers enjoying the ample, sunny patio with stunning vistas. Surrounded by bright flowers and serene nature sounds, The Homestead patio is a perfect place to relax after 18. Homestead’s sister course, Fox Hollow, is located just down the street on Morrison Road, ½ mile west of Kipling and 3 ½ miles east of C-470. Lakewood’s Fox Hollow Golf Course has consistently been rated as one of the finest public courses in Colorado by a variety of golf publications and players. It is one of the first courses in the country built to be 100 percent accessible for people with disabilities and received national recognition for its environmentally sensitive design. Fox Hollow provides challenging play for golfers of all abilities on 27 unique holes on the distinctly different Canyon, Meadow and Links nines.

Course aesthetic offerings include panoramic views, elevation changes, meandering fairways, majestic trees and streamside water hazards. The Canyon’s par-4 signature #5 hole has been voted one of metro-Denver’s Top 18 holes. Whether you’re looking for a Scottish-style links experience, sparkling streams and wildlife, or sweeping vistas, Fox Hollow has a view and style-of-play for every golfer. Every effort is made to retain what nature has to offer from elevation change and towering trees to ponds and beautiful streams full of wildlife. This in turn allows golfers to not only enjoy the physical activity of golf but also this picturesque natural setting nestled against the rugged Front Range. Like Homestead, the atmosphere at Fox Hollow is enhanced by the professionalism and courtesy of an award winning staff. Friendly, first-class service and a beautifully stocked pro shop are among the amenities you will find at Fox Hollow. In 2004, The Rocky Mountain News Top of the Rocky survey selected Fox Hollow as the Best Course on the West-

side, and since then it has won frequent honors for Best Public Course, Best Value and Best Food. Fox Hollow’s Den Restaurant offers a wonderful beginning or ending to your enjoyable day on the course. This fine restaurant, located within Fox Hollow’s cozy clubhouse, offers excellent food and scenic views from a wraparound patio or from a warm table in front of the stone fireplace. Whether your plans allow for nine holes, eighteen holes, or even twenty-seven holes, a day at Fox Hollow Golf Course is truly a golfers gift. The next time you’re considering an afternoon of golf, think Lakewood. Offering a tremendous value with 45 exceptional holes, fantastic food and friendly staff, any golfer can find a happy home-away-from-home in Lakewood. Colorado’s Sport Haley Launches 2015 Women's Golf Collection

S

port Haley, a premier women's golf apparel company, announces the launch of its Fall 2015 women's apparel collections at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Fla., January 21-23, 2015 at booth 5459. For more than 28 years, Sport Haley has been offering women timeless, classic and elegantly designed clothing for the golf course and clubhouse. And this year is no exception. "We always stay true to our customer," says Cathy Blair, President and Creative Director of Sport Haley. "We have continued to redefine the brand by staying focused.

We create lifestyle apparel that works, for everyday and on the course. Our Fall 2015 collections are based on neutrals that pop with color, and fabrics that have purpose. Prints are our passion, and they are our top sellers. We pair them with non-print mixers that round out the collection. Detailing is a strength of our brand, as we give every piece special attention. Our basics have a touch of fashion, and our fashion has a touch of class. Everything is about layering and comfort, and in the end, it is about how we feel in our clothes. They perform." By tapping into the mindset of the modern woman and her lifestyle today, Sport Haley knows it's about the ease

and comfort of dressing and the changing rules. The new chic is stylish comfort, whether it be an athletic pant worn with a blazer, a functional performance pant worn with a bit of cashmere and scarf, or a foiled holiday polo with both function and shimmer. The Nantucket group, one of Fall 2015 collections, takes a new twist on neutrals, mixing rich creams and linens with textures and elegance. Subtle prints are the focal point with a hit of poppy -- it's fabulous. The Isle of Capri is sporty, introducing a new look to traditional classics. A preppy houndstooth is updated in new silhouettes, the geometrics blend with the new florals, and the grounded graphite and platinum colors are popped with capri. It's stunning and easy to wear. Jakarta is rich in not only color but feeling. The prints feel Balinese with leaf florals and etchy patterns yet come together with some athletic styling and sporty graphics, making this lifestyle collection a winner. "Golfers are going to love all of these fresh styles for 2015," says Blair. "We're confident that the PGA Merchandise Show will be the perfect launch setting, as so many on- and off-course shop apparel buyers will be on hand to experience it all." Why Fort Worth? By Jerry Walters Divot Contributing Writer

L

adies, pay attention to this! Golf is considered to be a gentlemanʼs game, but only when youʼre within earshot. References to the ladiesʼ game are as common as broken tees on the driving range. Iʼm sure the females have heard them all as the men inadvertently have blurted out quips, forgetting a woman was in their group. The majority of the disparaging remarks refer to oneʼs putting. “Nice shot Alice” may be the most common of all the derogatory remarks although that was originally directed toward Peter Alissʼ

game, which had become woefully average. “Does your husband play?” Another unpleasant comment heard when a substandard shot is hit. Stroke a putt that comes up short of the ʻfriendship lineʼ and youʼre likely to hear “hard to play in high heels” or “skirt fly up?” One standard reference you ladies may never have been, pardon the expression, exposed to, is what the so-called gentlemen casually refer to as the Fort Worth Rule. When four male golfers are gathered on a remote tee box, and one of the hackers dribbles his drive so weakly that the ball doesnʼt reach the forward tees, an obscure provision known as the Fort Worth Rule comes into effect.

Pondering the comic brilliance of the collective male mind, the Fort Worth Rule requires the player who struck the miserable tee ball to immediately display his so-called manhood to the rest of the foursome. For all the years Iʼve played this pitiful game, and for all the numerous times the Fort Worth Rule has been threatened, thankfully, Iʼve

yet to see the penalty instituted. Obvious questions arise. Why is the penalty so stiff? Who dictates this rule? Which golfer was so half-cocked to conjure up this punitive action? But the most curious question is this: why Forth Worth? Why not St. Petersburg, Fort Dix or Johnsonville? D
