T
he premier event of the season has quietly risen to become one of the top consumer golf expos in the country. The annual Denver Golf Expo is the Rocky Mountain’s hottest golf industry event, supported by the Colorado Section of the PGA, Colorado Golf Association, the Colorado Junior Golf Association, and the Colorado Women’s Golf Association.
These united partnerships create the unique golf experience that the Denver Golf Expo attendees have long appreciated. It is one of the reasons the show has grown so quickly; the Colorado golf industry is truly present and strongly involved in the event production.

015 marks the centennial anniversary of the CGA which plans to kick-off a year-long celebration at this year’s Denver Golf Expo. Come be part of the celebration which includes the unveiling of a brand new CGA logo! Visit the CGA booth to receive special gift for all association members, in addition to incentives for non-members to join. Opportunities to get more involved with the centennial celebration will be available throughout the year, culminating with a Century of Golf Gala, tentatively scheduled for November 21, 2015. At that event, a
number of Colorado golf's all-time luminaries will be honored, and both the history and future of golf in the state will be celebrated. In addition, the CGA will hold a seasonlong fundraising event that will support the Colorado Golf Foundation and benefit programs that foster youth development through golf. That event will be called "100 Holes for 100 Years", and participants will raise money through donations pledged for a personalized golf-related activity centering around the number 100. For instance, a person could play 100 holes in a day, or in another set period of time. Or participants
can add any twist they'd like to the event, as long as it involves the number 100. "The goal is to raise awareness and engage the golf community to play golf for a purpose," said CGA executive director Ed Mate. "It will get the whole state involved. Why we're doing all this is to advance golf in Colorado," Mate said. "It's not just a celebration, but that's the driving force behind it all. We want to seize on the centennial to position the CGA, the community of golf and the Colorado Golf Foundation for the next 100 years. We want to make sure that the game not only will be around, but will

The Colorado PGA Golf in Schools Program just completed its fourth year and is running strong. Since its inception, the program has introduced over 40,000 children to the game. Through funding provided by The Colorado PGA Foundation and the Colorado Open Foundation, the game of golf and the life skills associated with it are introduced
by golf professionals to school age children at no cost to the school or the student. The program is conducted during a 3 day session in the child’s Physical Education classes with a final day field trip at a nearby golf course. Junior Golf Central
The popular Junior Golf Experience has a new name: introducing Junior Golf Central. This year’s junior golf experience at the 2015 Denver Golf Expo will highlight an interactive Drive, Chip and Putt Competition. Last year marked the second year for the popular joint initiative by the Masters Tournament, the United States Golf Association and the PGA of America. The Drive, Chip and Putt Championship is a free nationwide junior competition focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in golf, tapping the creative and competitive spirit of girls and boys, ages 7-15. Kids of all ages are invited to participate in the simulation at the Denver Golf Expo where they can showcase their skills in the three areas. Parents can register for any of the five local qualifiers that will be held in 2015 as well as gather information about Junior golf programs and tournaments in their area.

yle Heyen, PGA Head Professional at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen, Colorado, has joined the PGA Board of Directors as District 9 Director. He was elected to the Board of Directors today at the 98th Annual Meeting in Indianapolis and will serve a three-year term representing the Colorado, Rocky Mountain and Utah PGA Sections. Heyen, 57, a past President of the Colorado PGA Section (2004-06), is co-chair of the national PGA Player Development Committee. From 2009-12, he served as a member of the PGA Board of Control. Heyen was co-chair of the PGA Governance Committee from 2006-08; he served on the Play Golf America Committee in 2009; and from 2009-10 was a member of the National Awards and Hall of Fame Selection Committees. In 2009, Heyen was the first recipient from a private facility to be awarded the PGA President's Plaque (now PGA Player Development Award). He was inducted in 2011 into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame. "I am honored to be representing the men and women PGA Professionals in District 9 as a member of the PGA Board of Directors. It is a responsibility that I welcome and have looked forward to following my previous time in service to our Association," said Heyen. "We all are about growing the game of golf, and this is another important chapter as a PGA Professional." Born in Hastings, Nebraska, Heyen is a graduate of Westminster (Colorado) High School. He

was elected to PGA membership in 1983. Heyen began his golf career in 1978 as an Assistant professional at Indian Tree Golf Course in Arvada, Colorado. He then served as an Assistant Professional in 1979 at Sunrise Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, and in 1980 at Rolling Hills Country Club in Golden, Colorado. From 1980-85, he was an Assistant Professional at Hiwan Golf Club, and in 1985, he became the PGA Head Professional at Hiwan. One of the most decorated members of the Colorado PGA Section, Heyen was the Section Golf Professional of the Year in 2005 and '06. Heyen also has been recognized with eight other Section awards. Heyen and his wife, Cheryl, live in Arvada, Colorado. They are parents of daughters Lynnette and Holly; and have a granddaughter, Jessalyn. A
fter one has played the big named courses in Scotland and Ireland, what is a golfer to do? Well, there are certainly other countries to explore, many of which have better weather, more interesting food and wine and in some cases new languages to learn. I love golf in Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Argentina and New Zealand. Colombia, France, Sweden, Malaysia and Mexico are not too bad either. But, if I were to plan a trip for myself this summer, here is what I would do! I would return to either Scotland or Ireland and play the smaller, less known, out-ofthe-way courses where the likelihood of finding golf tourists is pretty slim. The Open is on the Old Course at St. Andrews this year and that has made it and many of the most popular courses unavailable. Another advantage to this sort of trip is cost. To play Kingsbarns, Carnoustie, Old Head or Royal County Down, you will pay at least $350, $260, $250 and $300 respectively. On the less well know but well respected courses, your average cost could be as little as $45 to $100 per round. Even the accommodations will be 20% to 30% less expensive and food and drink at the local pubs and restaurants will seem like a

bargain when compared to the “plat de jour” in St. Andrews or Killarney. So, if I have peaked your interest, here is what I would arrange for myself and my golfing buddies (or perhaps just my wife and me) in two of my favorite regions in Scotland and Ireland.

Scotland – East Lothian: This area east of Edinburgh a few miles is home to Muirfield, which is part of the British Open Rota and where non-member tee times are extremely limited and green fees expensive. It is also home to the exclusively private Archerfield Links Club (Fidra & Dirleton courses) and The Renaissance
Club. But, there is plenty of golf for the more budget minded golfer who still demands great courses for his money. Here are just a few that you might consider and are all within a range of $60 to $100 per round – Craigielaw, Dunbar, Glen, Gullane No. 2 or No. 3, Kilspindie, Longniddry (nice combination of Links and Parkland),

North Ber wick West Links Luffness New and Whitekirk. For those interested in the history of golf, make sure to play the 9-hole Musselburgh Links Old Course. Its location is a bit weird as it is surrounded by a race track for horses. However, it is thought to be the oldest continuously played golf course in the world (we are talking 16th century) and hosted the early British Open tournaments between 1874 and 1889. I suggest you play it as old Tom Morris did. Hickory shafted clubs are available to rent (about $50). Green fees are even a better bargain at about $20. Oh, don’t forget your knickers. There are many good places well within a traveling golfer’s budget to stay. The largest of the towns in the area is North Berwick. It has several good guest house and small hotels to choose from. Another favorite of mine is the little town of Gullane. North Berwick is also the home one of the best and still reasonably priced (about $145) courses in Scotland – North Berwick West Links. Spend the money to play it. You won’t be sorry. Ireland – Counties Sligo & Mayo: In 2012, my associate Neil MacKinnon and I took a group of golfers on a whirlwind golf tour. We played courses in Dublin, Northern Ireland and along the North and West coast of Ireland. I was particularly charmed by the areas of Sligo and Mayo Counties. Here again are a handful of courses as good as any in the country but seldom played by outsiders. They are budget friendly too. Here are some you may want on your itin-
erary – County Sligo (commonly called Rosses Point), Enniscrone, Strandhill, Carne and Connemara (actually in County Galway). You could also add a couple of fine parkland courses such as Westport, Castlebar and Ballina. Ballina, by the way, is a good place to stay. It is small enough to feel friendly and still have plenty of fine pubs and restaurants. We stayed at the Downhill Inn a small hotel. It had a bar with a jovial barkeep, which was probably its best feature. It is a bit of drive to Carne Golf Club so you may want to stay in one of the many charming inexpensive guest houses along the way. If you continue on to the beautiful university town of Galway, stop to play Westport and the fine 27-hole Connemara Championship. The landscape in this sparsely populated area of Ireland is stunning and the dunes on some of these links courses are enormous.

his vehicle is one of the very few remaining true SUVs that captures the spirit of true offroad enthusiasts. The rugged look of this 2015 4Runner isn't an accident or made up for marketing purposes. The 4Runner has had the same basic rugged look for years. It rides high and the proportions are bold. Inside it’s the same basic approach. All the controls are big and laid out in an uncluttered way, and the controls and gauges are framed with simple but smart materials. A 4.0-liter V-6 engine, now the only engine offered, makes 270 horsepower and 278 pounds of torque feel plenty 28

adies, pay attention to this! Golf is considered to be a gentlemanʼs game, but only when youʼre within earshot. References to the ladiesʼ game are as common as broken tees on the driving range. Iʼm sure the females have heard them all as the men inadvertently have blurted out quips, forgetting a woman was in their group. The majority of the disparaging remarks refer to oneʼs putting. “Nice shot Alice” may be the most common of all the derogatory remarks although that was originally directed toward Peter Alissʼ
game, which had become woefully average. “Does your husband play?” Another unpleasant comment heard when a substandard shot is hit. Stroke a putt that comes up short of the ʻfriendship lineʼ and youʼre likely to hear “hard to play in high heels” or “skirt fly up?” One standard reference you ladies may never have been, pardon the expression, exposed to, is what the so-called gentlemen casually refer to as the Fort Worth Rule. When four male golfers are gathered on a remote tee box, and one of the hackers dribbles his drive so weakly that the ball doesnʼt reach the forward tees, an obscure provision known as the Fort Worth Rule comes into effect.
Pondering the comic brilliance of the collective male mind, the Fort Worth Rule requires the player who struck the miserable tee ball to immediately display his so-called manhood to the rest of the foursome. For all the years Iʼve played this pitiful game, and for all the numerous times the Fort Worth Rule has been threatened, thankfully, Iʼve
yet to see the penalty instituted. Obvious questions arise. Why is the penalty so stiff? Who dictates this rule? Which golfer was so half-cocked to conjure up this punitive action? But the most curious question is this: why Forth Worth? Why not St. Petersburg, Fort Dix or Johnsonville? D
