ith four unique golf courses in four locations throughout the south metro area, it’s easy to play your way at South Suburban. Although many patrons refer to our courses, as their “club”, our golf courses are open to the public. South Suburban residents receive the resident rate, while those who live outside the District pay the nonresident rate. Residents may bring out of district guests at a special reduced guest rate.

Family Sports Golf Course 303.649.1115 is located east of I-25, and south of Arapahoe Rd., near Centennial Airport. It’s one of the

Lone Tree’s new, redesigned practice putting green is larger with fewer undulations. It features more usable putting space and

In late fall, a major renovation of the club house and a reorganization of the spaces within it will begin. While the footprint will remain largely the same, the pro shop and restaurant will flip locations, and the club house will be reoriented to improve views of the course and mountains. In addition, a complete master plan revision for the golf course is being completed which will set direction for capital improvements to the course over the next several years.

Lone Tree Golf Course 303.799.9940 is located in the heart of Lone Tree, and features an 18-hole, Arnold Palmer-designed, par 72 Suburban Golf Course championship course. Play rolling fairways and greens while taking in incredible views DIVOTMagazine.com l Spring Issue 2016

Back by popular demand is the Music on the Patio series, which begins on June 17. Enjoy free, live local bands every Friday from 6-9 pm on the Lone Tree Grill patio. It’s a perfect way to welcome the weekend!

All South Suburban courses are meticulously maintained for great playing conditions. Course superintendents are kept busy year-round keeping the turf healthy, improving playing conditions, and managing irrigation, mowing and more.

Littleton Golf Course 303.794.5838 is located west of the Mary Carter Greenway Trail and the South Platte River, minutes from downtown Littleton. It features a premier 18-hole executive layout with a water target driving range. It’s perfect for avid golfers and beginners alike.

South Suburban Golf Course 303.770.5500 is located just south of Dry Creek Rd., and east of Colorado Blvd., in western Centennial. Choose from the 18-hole championship course or the 9-hole, Par 3. A regional favorite, it attracts golfers of all abilities and ages. Enjoy free, live local bands on Fridays from 6-9 pm on the patio.

The iconic Tudor club house is perfect for hosting company golf events and tournaments. In fact, the Club will host the Colorado Golf Association’s Men’s Match Play the week of June 20th. Experience the fun of Demo Day and talk with representatives of major golf manufacturers on Friday, June 17 from 3:30 -7:30 pm at Lone Tree. Enjoy drink and food specials, along with live music at 6 pm.

Juniors are the life blood of the game and South Suburban offers affordable junior camps along with the popular Junior Playing Series at all four golf courses.

Family Sports has more hole locations. By using plugs from aeration of the regular greens, the putting green will be similar in speed and condition to the greens the players will find on the course. While the putting green was upgraded, the District also enlarged the cart staging area and the patio for the popular

Here we go again! I remembered stashing my clubs in the garage early last December so I knew they had to be buried somewhere behind the snow blower....

Tom Olkowski DIVOT Contributing Writer

A

s I sat staring out at the foot of snow on the hillside behind our house a couple of months back, I thought, “April Fool’s Day should actually come in February.” Here we were with the Golf Expo just ended, temperatures edging toward the 70’s, my in-box filled with announcements about course openings, tournaments being played in Arizona, California and Florida, the ground hog hadn’t seen his shadow, and I was waiting for the other winter boot to drop. To add to my funk, our local paper had just run a story about how few rounds had been played in January and February due to bad weather. Maybe I was just being cynical, but I seriously doubted that spring would ever arrive. A few weeks before I had visited a new state-of-the-art, heated driving range; and

10

although it was nice to be out bashing balls, somehow it wasn’t enough to cure my case of the winter blahs. I needed the real thing: the smell of a freshly mown fairway, the feel of a green under my feet, the sound of a ball dropping into a cup, a bunker to shank a shot into. So, to stave off a terminal case of cabin fever, I decided that, if nothing else, it was time to get my gear ready for that moment if and when spring actually arrived. But first, I had to find it. I remembered stashing my clubs in the garage early last December so I knew they had to be buried somewhere behind the snow blower and the garden tools that hadn’t been touched since fall. It took a few minutes but when I finally unearthed them, my first thought was, “Boy my bag looks shabby, I wonder if I could convince my wife that I need a new one?” Admittedly, however, after scraping off the three months of accumulated dust, the bag

DIVOTMagazine.com l Spring Issue 2016

didn’t look all that bad, although I had completely forgotten about the broken zipper on the side pocket that irritated me every time I played last season. When I uncovered the clubs, I also discovered that torn head cover I had sworn all year I was going to replace. The driver glared at me through the tear in the cover almost as if asking, “Do you really think you remember how to hit me?” Only slightly intimidated, I continued my spring clean-up. Wiping down my clubs was the easy part and actually felt somewhat satisfying, although I swear I could hear a mocking voice whispering, “Well, it’s about time.” Going through the various pockets on my bag proved to be a bit more of a challenge, not unlike unearthing fossils at a paleontological site. I discovered a half-eaten power bar, which I set aside to throw into the trash, changed my mind and decided it might still be edible. Next I found a driedup golf glove, a broken pair of sun glasses, several worn out soft spikes that I had replaced at the course one morning, the remains of two crushed ibuprofen tablets and two or three broken pencils. A second pocket greeted me with an un-

earthly stench that emanated from a towel and a pair of socks, both badly in need of laundering. I couldn’t open the third pocket because of the broken zipper and I clearly recalled why it had irritated me all last year. I still, for the life of me, don’t know what’s in there. In the ball pocket I found a few balls that I managed not to lose as the season ended as well as several scuffed balls that I had found along the way. Using the faithful bounce test I discovered the majority of them never rebounded high enough to reach my knees. Oh well, more ammo for the shag bag. Then I really hit pay dirt: a half dozen greens fee receipts from various courses around the city and a tattered copy of last year’s Green Saver book. At that point I sat down and thumbed through the book fondly recalling memories of those rounds and the folks I had played with at each course. In the process I also ate the remains of the power bar which didn’t taste too bad after all. Then with my task finally completed, my first thought was, “Here we go again!” Tom Olkowski is a retired clinical psychologist in Denver who claims he still has a spring in his step and spring in his heart. Adjusting For The Wind On All Shots By Nathan Morris DIVOT Contributing Writer f you play enough golf, you will without a doubt have to deal with the wind. Playing in the wind is a fact of life in Colorado. If you are able to navigate the course on a blustery day, you can add extra rounds to your golf season and add shots to your game that you can use any time, even if its not windy. We are going to explore tips and tricks to help navigate those windy days on the links, as well as shed some light on some common misconceptions that many people believe about playing in the wind that might actually be the opposite of what you are supposed to do.

I

Tee Shots

Common Misconception: Tee the ball lower and play it back in your stance.

12

What You Should Actually Do: • Hitting Into The Wind: You should actually tee the ball up higher if you want to maximize distance. Teeing it higher will allow you to hit up through the ball and hit it higher on the face of the club. This leads to a much lower spin rate and a shot that will bore well through the wind.

• Hitting Into A Crosswind: You will want to use the wind to your advantage here. Moving the ball with the wind, or in the same direction, leads to greater distance on the shot. Moving the ball against the wind leads to straighter, more accurate shots, but a loss in distance as well. Many of us cannot curve the ball any direction we want with precision, so use the same guidelines as hitting into the wind to start to help you recognize what will happen to your shot.

• Hitting Downwind: Hitting downwind can be fun off the tee with all the extra distance, but a nightmare into the green. Hitting downwind from anywhere on the course reduces the effect of backspin and as a result

DIVOTMagazine.com l Spring Issue 2016

will cause the ball to land flatter both into the fairway and into the green. That means more carry on the shot and a lot more roll out. Consider this when determining where you want your shot to end up when hitting downwind.

Approach Shots

Common Misconception: Play the ball in the back of your stance and hit down steeply to create a lower “stinger” type of knockdown shot. Playing this type of shot will actually create more backspin and a higher shot, especially into the wind. It might start low, but the extra backspin will make the ball rise fast and lose distance even faster.

What You Should Actually Do: Instead of playing the ball back in your stance, keep the ball position in the middle. Grab 1, 2, or maybe even 3 clubs extra (depending on the strength of the wind) and swing easier. This does three things for you: the lower loft will lower the trajectory of the shot. Mixing the lower loft with the lower swing

speed will create lower spin, keeping the ball from rising fast. And lastly, the swing is now much shorter so you will maintain a sturdy base and balance in the wind. In my research, I have found that a 10 MPH breeze will move your ball 1 club worth of distance in the direction it is blowing. That means that a 10 MPH breeze will move your ball 12 yards if that is the yardage you hit between clubs, 8 yards if that is the gap between clubs, etc. It will vary from player to player but is a way to gauge how much extra club you may need.

Short Game Shots

Wind affects these shots too! Pitching into a stronger breeze will all but stop your shots’ roll out. Conversely, chipping and pitching downwind will make it roll out a lot more. The ball can even move side to side from as little as 30 yards from the hole. When pitching into the wind, follow the same rules as the approach shot. Take a stronger club and swing easier. This will help you control spin and help the shot roll out like you thought it would.

weather. We can only learn to live with it and deal with it. The more you play in the wind and learn how it affects your shots around the course, the better you will become at judging the club you need to hit. In your mind, try to tell yourself that judging the wind is just 1 more variable to the shot like the yardage or elevation. As you learn to judge it correctly, follow the guidelines above and ALWAYS SWING WITHIN YOURSELF; playing with the wind doesn’t mean swing harder. You will enjoy and maybe even look forward to those windy rounds on the course.

Putting

This is all about feeling comfortable and confident. You should take a slightly wider stance and bend down a bit more to really anchor yourself against the wind. If you can, try not to hover over the ball too long

before you make your stroke. The longer you hover, the more unstable you will start to feel. You will lose focus on the putt itself and start thinking about the wind. Wind affects putts as well, but not as much as you might think. Unless you are a great scratch player or a professional, you really

don’t need to worry about wind affecting the roll of the ball. In reality, it is only a couple of inches in a medium breeze. Instead, focus on your comfort level and setup.

Mental Game

At the end of the day, we can’t control the

Golf & Balance By AJ Holdsworth DIVOT Contributing Writer

he common denominator that all great athletes have, no matter what the sport, is balance while playing the sport. This idea is executed and understood by our feet in every other sport, which in turn allows our bodies to acknowledge whether we are balanced (i.e. try making a crisp basketball pass without your feet or simply try walking without engaging your feet!). I would suggest the same should be true for golf if you want to have an athletic, balanced and repeatable golf swing! Understanding the amount of balance and more importantly where your swing causes you to lose balance is the most critical and ultimately the only idea that has to be executed to have a efficient, repeatable swing. To determine where your swing loses balance, swing in slow motion while barefoot on a fairly sturdy floor (helps make the drill more sensitive) and assess if at any point in the takeaway you feel either foot “leave” the ground. In yoga they use a term, ‘four corners” of your feet that I think helps paint a good picture of this concept. Functionally

when any of the four corners of your feet leave the ground in the takeaway you are starting to fall over! Repeat this drill until you can move to the top of your swing without losing any of the “4 corners” of each foot. The beauty of using this idea to train and play golf is you can manage appropriate length of swing, swing path, rhythm, tempo; you name it in your golf swing! This idea also translates to the down swing, so that at impact you have only all four corners of your lead foot down/attached to the ground (e.g. at the finish none of the trialing foot four corners should be “on” the ground). A great drill to hone in this skill, is to hit balls only standing on your lead foot (to begin with you can use your trail foot as a “kick stand” by dropping that foot back so only your only your toes are barely touching the ground). If you fall over in the takeaway the game of golf is very difficult! If you fall over in the down swing you can “get away” with it, and if you don’t fall over at any point in the swing, you will play great golf! Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado unveils new name and logo! Tournament registration now open he Colorado PGA and the Colorado Golf Association unveiled the name and logo for the new junior golf organization that is sweeping the state, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado. Junior golfers will be able to register for more than 70 tournaments offered by the JGAC, as well as visit their official Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. Tournament schedules can be found at www.juniorgolfcolorado.org. "The Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado is the start of a new legacy,” said Alan Abrams, the first president of the JGAC. “It is historic for two great junior associations to come together to better help the promotion of junior golf in our state as one alliance. “I’m proud that the two association’s Board of Directors has shown their leadership and wisdom to enable this program to begin and give our juniors, parents, grandparents and all those who touch junior golf, a new and exciting portal to help find a path for success, fun and competition for all junior golfers." The announcement follows the collaboration agreement between the two leading golf associations in Colorado last November. Among its many new features, the JGAC offers junior development series and competitive tour events for kids of all ages and playing abilities. The tournament schedule includes multi-day events on the Junior Tour for kids with a maximum handicap index of 8.1 for boys and 14.1 for girls, and single-day events on the Junior Series for kids in three different age division – 14-18, 1113, and 10 & Under. Members of the JGAC will be able to compete in four Major Championships at some of the most famed courses in the state. Exemptions into these events will be based on the player’s previous year’s finish at the event or their final position in the 2015

CJGA official points list. Those not automatically exempt will have the opportunity to earn a berth in qualifying events. More information for these events can be found in their respective Tournament Information Pages found on the official tournament schedule. The JGAC will also offer a Player Development Pathway which helps each junior golfer to identify more playing opportunities based on their skill level. It is comprised of nationally and locally recognized junior golf programs including Golf in Schools, PGA Junior League, Drive Chip and Putt, instructional camps, clinics and more. Tournament registration is now open and junior golfers must be a member of the JGAC to sign up for events. Players from the ages of 6 to 18 can register and enjoy a number of membership benefits including a GHIN Handicap number, college preparation counseling, volunteer opportunities, and more than 30 rounds of free golf (age dependent). They will also be able to play events in partnership with AJGA and the PGA Junior Series, as well as compete in national qualifying events like the US Junior Boys’ and Girls’ Amateur Championship, IMG Junior World Championship, Optimist International Junior Championship and Big I Junior Classic. The JGAC membership costs $100.

Getting over the consistency hump! By Kathleen Heiney LPGA Class A Professional & Certified RYT Yoga Instructor Yoga Fit FORE Golf

information in Golf Digest, the Golf Channel, CNN, and from tour players stating the impact that Yoga has had on their performance and in their personal lives.

very season students show up on my lesson tee and talk about all the things that are wrong with their game: their swing, their chipping, their ability to read the greens. Most of all, students lament their inconsistent performance. If I had a dime for every time a student asked me to help her with consistency I would be a very wealthy woman! That said, what does it mean to be consistent and how does one accomplish this?

Try this fun exercise during your next round: Instead of keeping score, take an inventory of your emotional, physical and mental state. For holes 1-3 record your emotions after each shot; for holes 4-6 record the physical sensations in your body after each swing, and for holes 7-9 score your mental awareness before each swing on a scale of 1-10. Were you committed to your swing, thinking about something else or just plain checked out? You will be amazed at how your mental awareness affects your game!

E

A basic definition of consistent is: Always acting or behaving in the same way. Wow! ALWAYS is a strong word and very unrealistic. Why? Because every time you step on the golf course you are going to show up differently than the day before- emotionally, physically and mentally. So now what? The key to creating change and lasting performance is learning how to become more aware of your emotional, physical and mental state!

How do we accomplish this in golf? By integrating Yoga! One of my favorite quotes by famous yogi

Cyndi Lee perfectly captures this idea: “Yoga is NOT about touching your toes, it is about unlocking your ideas about what you want, where you think you can go and what you will achieve when you arrive!” Yoga is about the process and the journey rather than the destination. Recently there has been an abundance of

In my signature program, Yoga Fit FORE Golf, I will teach you Yoga exercises specifically designed to improve flexibility, strength, balance and most importantly, mental focus. The skills learned on the Yoga mat, especially the ability to be fully present in each moment, will enhance your golf game and ultimately change your life. As you’ll see, Yoga is a grounding practice that infiltrates every part of life and allows us to strip back self-doubt and negativity to achieve contentment and happiness both on and off the course. Style Element is fairly traditional in its appearance but features an ultra-soft polyester/spandex irregular heather fabric that gives it a higher value perception. Pure is Antigua’s first basic solid polo in years. It’s an ultra-soft poly/spandex fabric, with basic styling details such as bust darts and angled side seams. In keeping with the minimalist approach, styles like Strive have very basic details, including an open placket and selffabric collar, but with a nylon/poly/spandex tonal mini-stripe fabric that’s not only super soft, but is also cool to the touch.

PATTERNS

Geometric patterns have been strong in the marketplace for a full year now, so styles Radical, Ascent, Modern and Champ emerged -- each featuring a version of abstract triangle prints. Radical and Champ are both white body styles with a pop of color, whereas Modern and Ascent are color body styles with tonal variations of the print. The sporty aspect of these styles lends itself to the more active customer who wants to look athletic on the course.

COLORS

The color palette for Spring 2016 focuses on highly saturated jewel tones. “We felt the neon colors were slowly fading away and the more basic, primary colors were coming into play,” says Dellios. “Color direction in the sportswear market has been stagnant, so we took our cues from high fashion and made our our version of a primary palette. For the first time in years, we decided not to run pint, but instead picked a bright clean red called Fire.” Other colors include a true kelly green called Verdant, a vibrant royal blue named Hypnotic, a sunshine yellow aptly named Sunburst, and lastly a step away from the traditional purple with a more berry color called Mardi Gras. These primary jewel tones are paired with black and white throughout the collection.

Come play the newly redesigned signature hole #17.

Lake Estes 9 Hole Golf Course FABRICATIONS

DESERT DRY™ is a moisture-wicking technology created exclusively for Antigua, to absorb and wick moisture quickly and evenly. The Desert Dry product family includes any garment using a fabric weight of 150 gsm or heavier. Typically fabrics over 150 gsm offer more body and improved drape for the customers who don’t like the ultra-lightweight “clingy” fabrics currently in the market. Examples of Desert Dry styles are Gypsy, Element, Jewel, Ascent, Stroke, Strive, Movement, Maverick, Equity and Pure.

DESERT DRY™ XTRA-LITE (D2XL) combines Antigua’s exclusive DESERT DRY™ moisture-wicking feature with specially constructed ultra-light fabrics for maximum wicking performance and optimum comfort. The D2XL product family includes any garment using a fabric weight of 150 gsm or lighter. These fabrics have been specially engineered to be lightweight while not being overly sheer. This is possible through the use of ultra-fine yarns which gives a fabric more body while not dramatically increasing the weight. Examples of D2XL styles are Champ, Jubilee, Premium, Radical & Modern.

Keys To Putting Confidence If you miss a short putt for par, do you call yourself all kinds of names and sprint to buy a new putter? By Jerry Walters Divot Contributing Writer

reat putters have more than a good putting stroke, mechanics and set up. Great putters have confidence, imagination, and experience. Nothing is more important in putting than knowing you can make putts. Everyone believes confidence is the key to great putting, but how do you develop putting confidence?

G

Self-Confidence is a state of mind that says “I can do this.” Confidence must be earned and it doesn’t just happen overnight. Confidence is based on experience such as proper practice. It’s hard to be confident in your putting if you haven’t at least made

putts on the practice green. Confidence also comes from making putts, putting practice, and a positive attitude. Henry Ford once said, “whether you think you can or can’t, you’re probably right.”

play. If you practice putting the correct way, you should feel like you earned the right to be confident. Always remember you have “paid the dues” when you start to doubt your putting ability.

1. Dues Need to be Paid

How do you judge your success on the greens? Most players have to make putts to feel successful and feel confident they can putt. This is especially true if their main goal is to make putts. It’s better to find a goal that you can control. If your goal is to “make it,” then you must learn to accept that you will miss putts! It’s easier to feel successful when your goal is to hit your line, have good speed, or hit a solid putt. Take solace in knowing that your line was proper and that your stroke was adequate and watch putts begin to fall. Even the best tour players don’t make every putt.

Confidence comes from practice and knowing that you can do it. That’s why you practice–so you feel confident when it’s time to

2. Alter Your Goal

3. Pick Your Terms

Can you convince yourself you’re a good putter? If you miss a short putt for par, do you call yourself all kinds of names and sprint to buy a new putter? Your putter’s not the problem, but rather how you talk to yourself that is self-defeating. It’s important to make sure your pep talk is positive and supportive instead of negative and destructive. Before long, you will begin to believe you can’t make putts if you keep telling yourself that you are not a good putter.

4. Practice to Make Putts

36

DIVOTMagazine.com l Spring Issue 2016

Practice is important to improving confidence, but it’s how you practice that is critical to transferring your confidence to the

course. Don’t just practice to hit putts. Practice with the intention of making putts, just like you would on the golf course. Use your full putting pre-shot routine; read the putt, see a line, and aim your putter just like you do when it matters. This type of practice will help you transfer what you learn to the course faster.

5. Begin with Success

Improper distance control will result in more three-putts than improper line. Spend a few minutes on the practice green hitting balls from one side to the other without a clear target, just to feel the green speed of the day. Hit uphill as well as downhill putts. Only after feeling comfortable with the speed of the greens would I suggest hitting a series of three foot putts into the cup. Good players use a warm up to get a feel of hitting the ball solidly, to tune-up their touch, and create success pictures in their minds. As part of their warm up before going to the first tee, many pros make a few short putts in a row. This helps them gain confidence by seeing, hearing, and feeling putts fall before going to the first tee. It instills success pictures before that day’s game.

6. Make Good Decisions

Every good putter begins his or her stroke with a consistent mental and physical putting routine. A routine should help you (1) lock your mind into execution and nothing else, (2) trust your decisions and stroke, and (3) feel confident before you hit it. Make good decisions in your routine, such as when you read a green, pick a line, aim, and set-up. This should help reduce doubt, gain focus and feed your confidence level. Finally, believe you have what it takes to make putts!
