Rockwind Community Links recognized nationally as one of the best public courses in New Mexico Since opening in 2015, Rockwind Community Links has been recognized nationally as one of the best public courses in New Mexico. The 27-hole municipal golf facility, owned and operated by the City of Hobbs and designed by Andy Staples, offers an 18-hole championship course with five sets of tees ranging from over 7,100 yards to 4,200, a 9-hole par 3 course, a dual-ended practice range and multiple short-game areas. The championship course was designed to test the best golfers, while also fostering beginners, families and disabled individuals. A special feature is a surrounding trail system complete with multiple trail heads, various outdoor seating areas, picnic spaces and scenic viewing points, including access to the site’s five acre lake that overlooks the golf course. The facility is considered a trailblazer in uniting golf with the local community. “Community Links” is a concept introduced by Staples where the focus of the entire project was to link the golf course to the fabric of life in Hobbs. The main course was designed to embrace the flat nature of the southeastern

New Mexico landscape, keeping irrigation to a minimum and the turf fast and firm. The design provides challenging features such as large elevated greens, disguised bunkers and interesting ground contours. Rockwind Community Links has received numerous awards from leading industry publications including: rated No. 2 in Golfweek’s 2019 Best Places You Can

Play in New Mexico; named “One of the 24 new courses that shaped the 2010s” by Golf Advisor; included in Golf Digest’s 2017 Best in State course ratings at No. 8; named one of Golf Digest’s Best New Courses of 2015; and a Top Five New Golf Development in the World by Golf Inc. Magazine. The United States Golf Association also singled out Rockwind for breaking the

mold and being more than just a golf course in a special video entitled “A Model Muni: Rockwind Community Links.” Architect Andy Staples has incorporated characteristics typically found on courses along the eastern seaboard of the U.S. built during the turn of the 20th century. Rock walls line fairways and a large interior lake is in play on a few holes that attractively punctuates the course routing. The 9-hole par-3 course called Li’l Rock is meant to complement the dual-ended practice range and short game area. It was built to facilitate walking, families, beginner golfers and kids. The length of shots ranges from a sand wedge to a driver. Rockwind Community Links also is a site for The First Tee of Southeastern New Mexico. The 8,000-square-foot clubhouse with outdoor patios includes the popular Rockwind Grill that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. A fully-stocked golf shop offers an extensive selection of clubs, apparel and accessories. For more information visit www.rockwindgolfcourse.com or call (575) 3979297. D

Fossil Trace multi-hole renovation project that is sure to impress As Winter ended, and Spring began many of us had improvement projects on our list - Fossil Trace Golf Club was no exception. With recent events of the world, the turf care team at Fossil Trace completed a much anticipated, multi-hole renovation project that is sure to impress, improve conditions and the overall golf experience. All holes renovated this Spring opened for play in late May, early June. Originally scheduled for last year, Mother Nature did not cooperate, and the renovation project was pushed to Spring 2020. Golf Course Superintendent Noy Sparks provides insight to the projects: Hole #15 | Par 5 & Hole #2 | Par 4 The final hole of our infamous Hole 11 - 15 stretch had been slated for renovation, along with the driveable Par 4 second hole, and Par 3, third. Noy's Notes The entire green complexes of Hole 2 and 15 were renovated after 18 years of struggling with the unique challenges the current design presents (Fossil Trace opened in July 2003). The golf manage-

cycles of freezing and thawing can cause “crown hydration,” a process where the cells inside the crown of the plant explode, killing the plant. Unfortunately, this occurred during the Winter 2017, resulting in significant turf loss on several greens. • The new designs lifted the greens 8 feet, shifted their footprint, increased overall square footage, all while providing much better surface drainage, and sunshine throughout the winter months.

The New # 2 Green at Fossil Trace ment team determined that the best way to provide a great experience on these particular holes would be to move forward with new green complex renovations. Our specific and most critical challenge we have had with the greens of Hole 2 and Hole 15 is the constant pressure of a Colorado winter, and its yearlong effect on these greens. There is a tremendous ice buildup on the green throughout the winter months, and all surrounding turf areas drain

towards the green surface. When it snows, the snow melts during the day and refreezes at night directly on the green. This caused two issues: • Accumulation of ice on the green prohibits gas exchange between the soil and the atmosphere which is critical to healthy turf - even in winter months. If ice remains on the surface for a prolonged period of time, the turf can suffocate and die. • Moisture on the surface that goes through

Hole #3 | Par 3 A much smaller project than the Hole 15 renovation, the turf care team reshaped the green to allow more pin locations and mellow out the extreme undulations that cause ice buildup during the winter months. Though not as big of a change as Hole 15 green, much improved playing conditions now greet players now that this project is completed. Feedback for the improved designs in the first month of play has been tremendous. We’re showing you why that 15-year-old driver is costing you yards off of the tee. You probably know a buddy who’s kept his old trusty driver in his bag for at least 10 years because ‘they just don’t make them like they used to’ or ‘when I hit it on the screws, it really flies.’ We’ve heard it all. Well if your buddy is constantly battling distance issues and maybe struggles to find the middle of the fairway, we would recommend it’s time to say farewell to old trusty. Not saying that older drivers are bad by any means. These pieces of equipment were all at the height of technology back in the day but over time, they get worn, and along comes bigger and smarter equipment to take its place. Why do new drivers go farther? It does take some convincing to the diehards who love their older driver but instead of rattling off the hundreds of reasons why new equipment is much more efficient for your golf game, I’ll let the numbers speak for themselves. Over the past few years, one thing that everyone wants out of a driver is distance. And the thing golf club engineers turn to is moment of inertia (MOI). MOI can get a little hairy but for the sake of simplicity, think of MOI as how much forgiveness a driver

has. So even on an off-center hit, a driver with a decent amount of MOI can help the ball stay straight and long. What does this have to do with old vs new drivers? Older drivers have a limited amount of MOI and they’re not as forgiving as the drivers on the shelves of GOLFTEC Centers across the country. To prove that, Director of Teaching Quality, Brad Skupaka measured the MOI on an older driver and a new one to see the difference. Obviously, the newer driver is built with more MOI but how does that translate to when you take these clubs to the course? When Skupaka hit the older driver, he carried it 307 yards and was 31 yards offline. When he hit the newer club, he carried the ball 329 yards and was only 13 yards offline. The proof is right there in the numbers. Old, ill-fit equipment can prevent anyone from gaining distance and accuracy off of the tee. So the next time you’re playing with your buddy with the antique driver in their bag, you’ll now know what suggestion needs to be made. And if this ‘buddy’ is you, we won’t tell anyone, just promise to start thinking about a custom club fitting soon. Growing up with a mother who also works in events, she quickly followed her lead and fell in love with events herself. Throughout college, she was an assistant at Ansley Event Design, then after graduating from the CU-Denver, she started her own wedding planning company. Over the last five years, Savanna has worked in all areas of events ranging from catering to décor design, but her real passion is grounded in helping people create magical

moments to remember for a lifetime. She is very excited to bring that passion to The Vista and looks forward to helping you make the event of your dreams a reality. Savanna is also your go-to person for dinner reservations at The Vista. Whether you’re a newcomer to the game, a scratch player, or somewhere in between, the City of Lakewood offers you 45 holes of championship golf over two distinctive courses. Fox Hollow features three unique nine-hole layouts, each offering wonderful vistas, water challenges, wildlife and a protected, natural environment that will make you forget you are only a few miles from the bustle of urban Denver.

large but hidden green is considered the signature hole of the entire Fox Hollow layout. From the tee, aim for the lay-up flag and don’t hold back. The biggest mistake most make is leaving themselves with a very long approach shot over a penalty area to the well protected

green – the largest at Fox Hollow. The safe miss is slightly left, where shots can bounce on or near the green. Anything right or short will wind up in a drainage ditch and unplayable, where the best strategy is to take your poison, use the drop area and try to salvage bogey. Console yourself by watching for the hawks and occasional eagle which favor the hole and its changing winds.

Fox Hollow Meadow #5 – Most golfers consider this downhill par 4 the most beautiful hole at Fox Hollow.

Course Feature

From the tee, a forced carry is required over a creek to a fairway guarded on the left by a penalty area and on the right by a pond extending the last 160 yards to the green. The hole has seen big changes over the last several years, including the natural loss of a tree canopy by the bridge over the creek and another tree right of the green, making the hole appear more open. Also, a bunker renovation project was completed last May. The undulating green slopes back to front and, because of surrounding trees, can be more difficult to read early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Fox Hollow Links #5 – Before teeing off on this difficult, uphill par 4, take a moment to enjoy the extraordinary westward view toward the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater set against Mount Falcon and the Dakota Ridge Hogback. An uphill drive of 220 yards or more still leaves another 200 to reach a green protected in front by a deep bunker. Favor the right side off the tee as a

mistake left brings a fairway bunker or worse, the long native grass, into play. Make par here and you’ll have added momentum to finish this scenic nine.

Homestead #9 – This mid-length par 4 on Homestead’s Prairie Nine features a classic risk/reward challenge. Start with the split fairway – choose left for a shorter but trickier approach to the severely back-tofront sloping green, requiring an 80 yard carry over a lake. Choose right for a better angle to the green, but one that requires a longer drive to clear fairway bunkers center and right. Try to focus on your putt even though your stomach may have you thinking about the Homestead Grill’s tasty menu.

phitheater to the west, and a stunning perspective of Fox Hollow and Green Mountain as a backdrop to the north. Club selection is critical given frequent wind, a native grass penalty area short and bunkers short right and long of the green. The good news is that tee shots that land on the undulating green usually stay there. Making a 3 on this hole is good; making a 2 is indeed memorable.
