Publishers Note

I

t’s hard for me to believe that with this issue of DIVOT Magazine begins my 19th year of golf publishing in Colorado. It all started in 1992 with Metropolitan Tee Times, a limited circulation newspaper providing Denver area news for the recreational golfer. As reader demand increased through the years to include the entire state, so did the need to change the name and format of the publication, and so Metro Tee Times became GOLFViews Magazine. GOLFViews was soon recognized as one of the most up to date, reliable resources for golf related news and information in Colorado. And now, just as the increased circulation warranted change years ago, today's continually evolving media landscape demands yet another change and a new chapter in O’Keefe Publishing’s long history. GOLFViews Magazine is now DIVOT Magazine, offering a smaller, more user friendly format designed to be “The Guide to Golf in Colorado.” All of the same golf related news, information, trends and lifestyles that Colorado golfers previously enjoyed in GOLFViews will now continue in a unique format unlike anything else found in this market. And because of this new digest size, DIVOT Magazine will increase it’s distribution points, making it more available than ever before. Additionally, this new format is less expensive to print and distribute, giving DIVOT advertisers the ability to stretch their budgets even further without sacrificing exposure. What was previously an unrealistic expense has now become an opportunity to bundle print with our growing email and website services, ensuring multi-media blanket exposure, designed to reach every golfer in the state. I hope you enjoy the new format. I know we will enjoy bringing it to you and by doing so, continuing our ongoing commitment to serve Colorado's remarkable golf community. See you on the course soon, and remember... Take a DIVOT! Karl O’Keefe Publisher karl@divotmagazine.com

hat is a PGA Professional? The members of the PGA wear many hats. You primarily know them as the men and women who manage your local golf facility. They are teachers, merchandisers, junior golf leaders, tournament planners, business managers and, yes, they play a good game of golf too. The Colorado PGA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Colorado Section of the PGA, was organized exclusively for charitable purposes including making contributions to other exempt organizations. In 2010 and again in 2011 the foundation will assist the March of Dimes in fund raising activities that help in their quest for “ healthy babies, healthy mothers by conducting a 100-hole golf challenge. Last year 56 PGA Professionals played at least 100 holes in one day and raised over $84,000. There was even a hole in one made by PGA Member John Trenk! Half of the net proceeds were donated to the March of Dimes with the balance being used for the Colorado PGA Golf and Schools Program. Additionally, the Colorado PGA Foundation was responsible for giving another $25,000 in Growth of the Game grants and $25,000 in scholarships bringing the total over $100,000! The Colorado PGA Golf and Schools Program is a joint effort that unifies the efforts of the allied golf associations (PGA, CGA, CWGA, RMGCSA, CMAA, First Tee of Green Valley Ranch, etc). Through this statewide initiative Colorado PGA Professionals will continue in their efforts to bring the wonderful traditions and life skills taught by the game of golf to school age children across the state. During the first year of this program our goal is to reach 20 schools and 3,000 children and by year five grow to 60 schools and 9,000 kids. Together we hope to achieve great things! Colorado PGA Members are strong supporters of our troops.

Bigger and Better CGA Golf Swap and Junior Golf Experience returns to 2011 Denver Golf Expo By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributiong Writer

T

he Junior Golf Experience keeps getting bigger and better,” says Dustin Jensen, CGA’s Director of Youth Programs. “During the 2011 Denver Golf Expo, we expect even more kids will attend and experience the game of golf, many for the first time. That’s why the CGA Golf Swap continues to be an important fundraiser for us.” Get a new set of clubs for Christmas? Looking for a great deal on a driver at the Expo? Help a good cause and donate your used clubs or purchase your replacement set at Colorado Golf Association’s (CGA) Golf Club Swap during the 2011 Denver Golf Expo, Friday, February 11 through Sunday February 13! The CGA’s Youth Program needs your donations for its annual Golf Club Swap. If you’re in the market for the odd iron, a proven driver or a starter set for someone special, visit the CGA’s Golf Club Swap during the 2011 Denver Golf Expo. You’ll find great deals on previously owned equipment, and you’ll do something good for your community. “Every dollar raised through the swap will go directly into the youth program, earmarked for kids who need help,” adds Jensen. “Much of the equipment in the swap is provided by clubs and pros who have asked members to donate clubs of all types, makes and sizes that they no longer use.” Individuals may also donate clubs and choose to collect 70 percent of the selling price, with the balance going to CGA Youth Programs, or simply allow the CGA to keep all of the proceeds. Due to the organization’s non-profit status, any donations are eligible to be used as a tax deduction. The annual golf swap raises much needed funds for its youth developmental programs. These proceeds go directly to CGA Youth Programs, a non-profit entity that supports developmental programs such as those offered by Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Colorado, Boy Scouts of Colorado, LPGA/USGA Girls

Golf, Special Olympics, Ridgeview Academy and Open Fairways. CGA also continues to actively support the Junior Golf Experience during the Expo. According to Jensen, “Last year, hundreds of kids enjoyed the Expo’s Junior Golf Experience. We’re excited to get more kids involved in the game in 2011.” For parents or juniors wanting to learn more, Jensen suggests they log onto http://www.coloradojuniorgolf.org. “This web site is designed to serve as a central location for all junior golf programs within the state,” explains Jensen. “This continues as a collaborative effort between the junior golf entities within Colorado whom have come together to form the Colorado Junior Committee. We want to be a live road map to getting kids involved and get them into golf. The Expo’s Junior Golf Experience is a no-pressure way to spark the interest in the game of golf.” If you can stand and hold the club, you can take a swing at the 2011 Denver Golf Expo’s Junior Golf Experience. Jensen reports that last year kids as young as ages 2-3 were hitting the “birdie.” Club donations will be accepted at the Denver Golf Expo between noon and 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, and between 8 a.m. and noon on Friday, Feb. 11. Payments for items sold by consignment will be distributed between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13 at the Merchandise Mart. For more information on the swap and CGA Youth Programs, or to donate equipment at any time during the year, contact Director of Youth Programs Dustin Jensen at 303-974-2110. Lenny’s Golf Shop returns as sponsor of the popular Club Test and Driving Range By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributiong Writer ponsored last year for the first time by Lenny’s Golf, the Demo Days Club Test and Driving Range are always a popular gathering place at the Denver Golf Expo. Last year’s was, however, according to Mark Cramer, president of Denver Golf Expo, the best year yet! “Everyone knows Lenny Nosewicz of Lenny’s Golf,” says Cramer. “And everyone knows that when Lenny gets behind an event, he puts 150 percent of his effort into making it a success. That’s what he did at the 2010 Denver Golf Expo, and we’re thrilled to have him back again in 2011.” Since the early 1980’s, Lenny’s Golf has been a Colorado favorite offering the best in golf equipment, apparel and custom fitting. Lenny’s Golf participated in the Expo last year, but Lenny says, “We’re really excited to return as sponsor of the 2011 Denver Golf Expo’s Club Test and Driving Range with 15 hitting stations to loosen up the golf swing and try the new 2011 club models.” With assistance from manufacturers’ representatives, Expo attendees can stop by and swing 2011 offerings from top club makers such as Calloway, Nike, Cleveland, TaylorMade, and Adams with many more brands being added every day! This continues to be the biggest three demo days that Rocky Mountain golfers will have for the entire season. According to Lenny, “The driving range offers golfers the opportunity to see and try a lot of new product. If there’s a club you’re interested in, chances are we’ll have it. We are also giving Expo attendees an opportunity to test and even win the new TaylorMade R11, valued at $400. Simply stop at our Lenny’s Golf booth and register to win!” Lenny reports that this year is going to be big with double the inventory of 2010, at nearly $200,000, and more nonstop deals than ever before. “We’ve been aggressively purchasing a lot of inventory this year, and buying irons below cost and

bags below wholesale. That means we will be offering an amazing amount of inventory and deals that you can’t imagine – including iron sets valued at $900 for just $499. As a consumer, you’ll not find better deals!” “We have all kinds of deals on equipment and gear that you can’t get anywhere else,” says Lenny. “Of course, we’ll be highlighting some of the exciting new models, and attendees can be among the first to try these new clubs out at our driving range with 15 hitting stations.” Lenny’s Golf is well-known for its philosophy of the importance of fitting clubs, and with the additional retail space, Lenny says, “We will find the right fit for you and your golf game. I’m a firm believer that today you can buy a golf game with today’s golf equipment and technology – and we will make sure that you leave the Expo with the right equipment and the best deals. Armed with personal knowledge gained at the Denver Golf Expo’s Demo Days Club Test and Driving Range, golfers are invited after the show to check out Lenny’s Golf Shop‘s full line of clubs and equipment, personalized service and custom fitting, located at 2601 S Parker Rd - Aurora, CO or call 303369-5900. “Made in America” Dimension Z Golf returns to Denver Golf Expo Edited by Diana Rowe By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributiong Writer

A

s usual, the Dimension Z booth at the Denver Golf Expo will proudly show you the highest-quality golf clubs you can buy. What may not be obvious is that the Arvada, Colo., company is among the last to still wave the “Made in America” banner. Most golfers don’t realize this, but virtually all of the golf clubs sold under famous brand names – Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Nike, Ping, Cobra, Cleveland, Adams and the like – are now made in China or the Far East. Callaway still makes some clubs at its corporate headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif. But the company recently announced that its last manufacturing operation in the USA will be transferred next year to Monterrey, Mexico. Dimension Z’s custom-fit, precision-manufactured clubs are still proudly made in the USA by American craftsmen who are very proud of what they make. “We seem to be the last holdouts of an industry that’s moved offshore,” said Dimension Z founder and president Don Ingermann. “Are we patriotic? I hope so. But the USA is the only place we can maintain our quality standards. “We started our company because the word ‘quality’ already was becoming less and less important to the famous brand name club makers,” says Ingermann. “We’ve built our reputation on producing golf clubs made to the tightest, most demanding manufacturing standards in the industry. And the only way we can maintain this quality level is by having skilled craftsmen make our clubs here in the USA, rather than by cheap labor in China, Taiwan, and VietNam.” Stop by the Dimension Z booth and hold one of their clubs. It won’t look much different from a shiny new club stamped with a famous brand name. It’s out on the golf course that “the Dimension Z difference” becomes apparent. Golfers who play Dimension Z equipment uni-

16

versally report the clubs help them play better. The clubs are made so well that each club in a set performs the same, delivering consistent results. “After-sale reports from our customers tell us that competent, low-handicap golfers who play Dimension Z clubs improve their scores by at least six strokes,” Ingermann adds. Ingermann says that recreational players – the novices and occasional golfers who don’t play often enough to move out of the mid to high-handicap category -- report even greater improvement. These players, the people who make up the majority of the world’s golf population, tell the Dimension Z folks that their clubs lower scores by 10 to 12 strokes or more. No other club manufacturer can report results like this. And Ingermann strongly believes that his company couldn’t deliver such high-quality, scorelowering clubs if they were made in the Far East. Dimension Z does buy a few club components from companies in China, because that’s the only place they can get them any more, according to Ingermann, but all their precision-manufactured clubs are built by skilled American craftsmen. Experienced team members weigh, grind, measure, test and frequency-match every single club we make. In fact, each Dimension Z club is tested 400 different ways. All 360 degrees of every club’s shaft is measured, and the Dimension Z performs 40 other quality tests -- before the club goes out the doors of their only plant in Arvada. “Dimension Z seems to be the last of a vanishing breed,” Ingermann says, “but we wouldn’t have it any other way.” Included in your Denver Golf Expo admission, courtesy of Dimension Z Golf, is a complimentary custom built Lob wedge or rescue wood (shipping and handling fees apply). If you can’t wait to discover the Dimension Z “Made in America” advantage, log on to their website: https://www.dimensionz.com, call (303) 4038344 or visit their Arvada store at: 14700 W. 66th Place, Suite #6. Air-Cool Golf Shirts are now Natural Healing & Eco-Friendly By Diana Rowe DIVOT Contributiong Writer

B

ob Levine, from Air-Cool Shirts, is known for the great deals he brings to the Denver Golf Expo, but this year, Levine is raising the bar by offering Natural Healing - Eco Air-Cool Shirts. “We're excited to bring Air-Cool Bamboo Charcoal golf shirts this year,” says Levine. “Made of 45% Recycled Synthetic and 55% Bamboo Charcoal, these shirts are healthy for the environment and healthy for your body. By using Recycled Polymers, we are able to rid the extra plastic waste and save our landfills from over flowing. By adding the Bamboo Charcoal, we have now made our shirts naturally absorbent without adding any harmful chemicals.” Many Asian civilizations have used charcoal for medicinal and healthy living purposes for centuries. Bamboo Charcoal has so many beneficial characteristics that many call it the “light of life.” Because bamboo is a grass, when you cut down the stalks, it will re-grow from the existing root structure. That makes bamboo a very sustainable and environmentally friendly resource. Bamboo Charcoal comes from the drying and heating of naturally grown Bamboo, turning it into charcoal. By adding the natural product of Bamboo Charcoal to the yarn, the natural breath ability, de-odorizing and anti-bacterial characteristics are added to the shirt along with personal health benefits like activating body metabolism, promoting blood circulation, relieve fatigue & stress. Natural Healing Eco Air-Cool not only is healthy for you but also is comfortable, lightweight, warm in the winter, cool in the summer, washable, beautifully styled, feels and looks great. Levine says, “Natural Healing - Eco Air-Cool Shirts are heart-healthy. Imagine when you are at the beach, a waterfall or a forest and how refreshed you feel, this is because the environment is filled with anions and you are absorbing them. By wearing the Natural Healing - Eco Friendly Air-

DIVOT Magazine

cool shirt made with bamboo charcoal, the anions are directly in contact with the skin and are being directly absorbed. This can activate the body metabolism, promote blood circulation, stabilize autonomic nerves and mood, help with fatigue and lessen body pain and relieve stress.” In fact, the new Natural Healing - Eco Air-Cool Shirts are going national and will appear on the 20/20 show sometime in February or March, according to Levine. The Air-Cool design of these new shirts is still guaranteed to keep you cool and dry all day, and as usual, Levine is excited about the upcoming Denver Golf Expo and Air-Cool show specials. Natural Healing - Eco Air Cool is available in many styles and colors and you can choose from sizes S-4XL. “For the first time ever, we will have a complete line of beautiful ladies clothing,” says Levine. “One booth will feature ladies' shirts, jackets, wind shirts, vests plus more - all priced at 70-80% off retail.” Denver Golf Expo is a perfect time to stock up on Air Cool Golf Shirts. When you buy four Air-Cool Golf Shirts, you will also receive a square-headed, titanium driver, valued at $200 - absolutely free! Remember, the Air-Cool Golf Shirts sell out quickly, so make us your first stop.” For more information about Air-Cool products including the Natural Healing - Eco Air-Cool Shirts, log on to their website at: http://laveenaircool.com. The Denver Golf Expo will have 140 exhibitors with amazing show specials, discounts and opportunities for golfers. D

Is Colombia Ready to Welcome Golfers? By Peter Hellman DIVOT Contributing Writer

I

received an invitation recently from the government of Colombia (made infamous by novels and grade B movies that exploited the country’s drug problems) to see for myself what the country can offer golfers. When I mentioned to my wife, I did not get a positive response. “You want to do what?” “Are you crazy?” “Is you life insurance paid up?” These were some of the nicer things she said. Well, despite the well-meaning spousal advice, I came current on my life insurance and flew to Bogotá. I had assurance from the government that all was safe and having seen their motto, "Colombia: The only risk is not wanting to leave", I felt pretty secure about my visit. While there, I scoped out golf courses, inspected hotels, tasted the cuisine, viewed some historic and cultural sites, shopped and sampled some of the local night life As we all know, Colombia has had a long history of civil unrest, violence and drug lords who became more powerful than the government itself. Not too long ago, people who knew the country often said. “If it weren’t for the violence and drugs, Colombia would be paradise.” But, a paradise for golfers and tourist? I wasn’t too sure about that, though I wanted to find out for myself if eight years of aggressive efforts to quash the Drug Cartel and FARC, the leftist faction that has been trying to over throw the government since the 1950’s, was as successful as I had heard. The truth is that I felt safe, welcome and as comfortable as I would in any stable prosperous country. Perhaps a little background is necessary. In 2002, during the height of the country's problems, the people elected a tough conservative president by the name of Alvaro Uribe. With help from the U.S., it supplied "mucho dollares" and “advisors”, Uribe took on the Cartel and FARC with such intensity that by the end of his term in 2010, the drug lords were dead, their organizations in shambles

and the FARC leadership neutralized. The tough stance of Uribe’s government continues with his successor Juan Manuel Santos. My visit included a few days Bogotá and Medellin, the capital of the Drug Cartel, that lies about 40 minutes by plane from Bogota. Most of the courses are located around Bogota, but the country has over 50 excellent courses and they are all private. There is one resort course designed by Jack Nicklaus under construction in Cartagena, a popular resort town on the Caribbean side of the country, but you will have to wait a few months to play it. Now just because the courses are private does not mean you can’t play. Currently, a hand full of them welcome outside players and more are expected to open their doors. The three courses I played outside of Bogotá and the two I played in Medellin had clubhouses that reminded me of traditional private clubs in England and U.S. and the courses themselves were well laid out, mature, beautiful, well manicured and challenging. In fact, among golf experts, Colombia outranks all but Argentina and Brazil in South America. So, what is it like? Well to my mind, it is worth the trip for any adventuresome golfer and I recommend, if that is who you are, that you put it on your bucket list. You may notice I said it is for the adventuresome golfer. What I mean is that it is not American golf. Think more of golf as it was played – no cart paths and certainly no carts. Every course in Colombia is a walking course and the concept of walking and carrying is not an option either. Colom-

bian golf is a game with caddies. If you golf, a caddie carries - how nice. Though caddies are inexpensive (and so are the green fees), there is a problem at most courses. Your caddie may know his course and have a lower handicap than you do, but speaking intelligible English is not a skill set he has. Unless you speak Spanish, my advice is to smile and forget about statements concerning distances and how to approach the green. Some of the courses reminded me of ones in Northern California (the Eucalyptus trees were a give away) though they were lush and green. Temperatures were mild if not cool. I did not realize, that even though Bogotá and Medellin are near the Equator, their altitude makes temperatures ideal for golf. At about 9,000 feet, Bogota is much like playing in our Colorado mountains and Medellin at over

7,000 feet, is much the same. Its designation as the City of Eternal Spring is certainly appropriate. I think that Colombia is ready to become a promising new golf destination. I am convinced it is safe, that it has quality golf courses, good restaurants, excellent hotels and a warm fun-loving people. The country has dealt with its most serious problems and the world has responded. Foreign investment is pouring in and there is a genuine sense of prosperity through out much of the country. I now believe in Colombia's motto that "COLOMBIA: THE ONLY RISK IS NOT WANTING TO LEAVE." Story by Classic GOLF Tours. NEWS FLASH... Putting is an important part of the game! By Jerry Walters DIVOT Writer ace it, become a better putter or learn to lose graciously and continue to pay your golf buddies. The fact is, putting is somewhere between 43% and 50% of the game. If par at your favorite course is 72, and two-putting is the standard, then half of your strokes are made with the flatstick. The putter is the one club you’ll use nearly every hole, yet receives the least amount of attention. Why? Simple. Chicks dig the long ball. Try getting your spouse or significant other to watch you sink endless short straight putts. BORING! Did you realize that nearly every putter is adjustable? The truth is, not many retailers or club fit-

Have you ever noticed the putter waving, as if to say goodbye, in your backswing? Of course you have. There is a simple alteration in your set up which could immediately eliminate the putter from making you seasick during your backstroke. Then there’s the “Y” Word. I’d rather you mentioned an IRS audit than use “YIPS” in any context.

Is there any hope for golfers who have been brought to their knees in a fit of angst, choking their putter grip into a molded training grip and cursing the very forefathers who maliciously invented the flatstick? In later issues, I’ll give you some tips to incorporate into your routine which might bring some sanity and enjoyment back into the game. Next issue: Fitted Putters: spending a fortune on a new putter doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fitted to you, and having your putter fitted to you and your stroke doesn’t cost much. I’ll discuss the benefits of having your putter fit to you, and what to look for to determine if your putter even needs adjustment. There are a few simple things to tip you off, and I’ll even disclose the faults an improperly fitted putter can cause. Golf with other women in a non-threatening environment

he desire to improve her game while making new friends in a casual setting, and not have it break the bank, prompted Sassy Golf founder and owner Nancy Collins to develop the concept for a different kind of women’s golf league —one that welcomed women of all levels and gave them opportunities to learn the game and have other women to golf with in a stress-free setting at half the cost. With an average of two-three weekly 9-hole rounds that always includes a golf lesson, golf cart, and beverage of their choice, women can come and play golf after work and on the weekends when it makes the most sense for them. “Why wait until you retire to learn or improve your golf game because you don’t have the time, money, or friends to golf with. With an average of 20 players at each event, and at over half the cost of what it would cost someone to do it on their own, it’s a no-brainer! We’re all about fun, friendship, variety, and stress-free golf outings at public and private courses around the Denver Metro area for cheap,” said Nancy. “ We have no hassles, no rules, no handicaps, just lots of great golf events for women of all ages, career women and moms

whose busy lives can’t be tied down to rigid requirements.” Sassy Golf’s unique “play and pay as you go” membership structure takes the pressure off members to adhere to schedules. The league offers weekly golf outings, clinics, and equipment demos that members can book when they can find time in their solidly booked calendars. There is no requirement to play a certain number of games each year. Members simply come and play as their schedules permit, so they never lose money by missing an event. And unlike conventional leagues, Sassy Golf will schedule events on all different afternoons each week, giving members a chance to improve their skills in a wide variety of courses and days. Collins giggles, “I can’t believe or be happier that we’re about to begin our fourth season and everyone is still cheering Sassy Golf on. I have to pinch myself because I’m still just a girl who wants to golf, learn as I go, while having fun doing it! So thank you Denver based golf companies and golf courses, for giving Sassy Golf just what we asked for….“a league of our own”!!

lmost every golfer in the universe knows it’s going to happen sooner or later but like most surprises we never know quite when it’s going to occur. Last season my game hopped a freight and headed south. It started in late May at a 50th high school reunion scramble back in Detroit. You know how those events usually go, great for comradery but not for good golf – a six hour round, lots of joking and reminiscing, plenty of adult beverages, lunch at the turn, and in this case a course with long, lush roughs produced by heavy spring rains we rarely see here in Colorado. I had a great time socializing with old buddies although our quartet was one of the last to finish and most likely finished last in scoring as well. I didn’t even bother to look at the leader board afterward. That was followed by several delightful but disas-

trous rounds at Arrowhead where the breathtaking scenery lulls you into a trance and then the terrain and lightning-fast greens team up to destroy the spirit of even the most accomplished golfers. The fact that I was enjoying the company of close, out-of-town friends somehow disguised the fact that my game was slowly chugging in the wrong direction. As the summer wore on, a deteriorating disc in my back began to cause problems that eventually produced increasing amounts of pain. My drives, which had once been among the longest in our foursome, were suddenly the runts of the litter and concerns about the pain and its possible cure began to surface. My physical therapist, Brad Marquez, who had once worked on the PGA tour, reassured me that Fred Couples, Lee Trevino and David Duval, among others, had all experienced severe back troubles and had come back to play well on tour. Although I took solace in his words, I wondered if he realized that I’d never been tour material to start with. With the increasing pain came swing changes

and doubts about shots that I had previously had complete confidence in. Those concerns led to a case of the “look-ups” so animated I could have modeled for a Sergio Garcia bobblehead doll or been mistaken for a spectator at a trampoline exhibition. What had begun as a promising season had become a runaway train marked by aches and pains, uncertain shots, silly mistakes and a loss of confidence. My handicap which had never been all that great increased by seven strokes (wonderful for tournaments but awful for the psyche) and, more significantly, my enjoyment of the game rapidly dwindled. The combination of these factors naturally led to a variety of irrational thoughts about possible miracle cures like taking more lessons, buying new clubs or attending church regularly, but looming in the background was the specter of back surgery and the worst scenario of all, perhaps having to give up the game completely. Thankfully my golf buddies remained encouraging and tolerated my frustrations. But despite my best efforts at positive thinking, my frame of mind reminded me of a joke that had made the rounds a few years back. A young woman spends hours putting on make-up

and dressing seductively for a date with a man to whom she is quite attracted. Despite all her efforts he seems distracted and expresses only passing interest in her. At dinner she tries to be engaging and flirtatious but again with little response on his part. On the way home she attempts to demonstrate her desire for a romantic encounter. Unfortunately her efforts all seem to go for naught and she becomes quite depressed as she wonders why she can’t stir his interest. Meanwhile throughout the evening, her date silently obsesses about how badly he had played golf that morning. So now with winter on the horizon I’ve decided to lay the clubs aside for a while, give my back time to heal, forget the awful shots of the year, clear my head of doubts about my game, watch a few swing tips on the Golf Channel and perhaps try to talk my wife into letting me buy a new set of clubs next season. And while I’m doing all that, I’ll be sitting in a railroad station keeping my eyes open for a train headed back on the right track.

Tom Olkowski, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist in Denver who is trying to hone the fine art of practicing what he preaches when it comes to positive thinking in the face of train wrecks. D

Former Heather Ridge Country Club Now Offers Public Play

G

olf Club at Heather Ridge, formerly known as Heather Ridge Country Club in Aurora, created as a private club in 1973, is now open for public play offering the same quality conditions and service it had as a Country Club. The 6,106-yard course is known as a true ‘shotmaker’s course’. The greens are recognized as some of the best in the state because of their challenging design and great conditioning. The course is referred to as “Aurora’s Best Kept Golf Secret” and is now open, functioning and competing for public golfers. The 85-acre course, designed by Colorado architect Dick Phelps, flows through the residential community near I-225 and Iliff. It is that residential community that saved the golf course. After falling into receivership following the suicide of the owner in July 2008, the course was in limbo for 16 months while potential buyers inspected the property. Homeowners around the course feared the arrival of yet another developer and for the survival of the golf course so they banded together to buy the course and operate it themselves. The previous owner had sold off part of the property for condominiums and had tried to sell the fairways for $6.4 million where 3,000 more condominiums were envisioned. A self-taxing, nonprofit co-op was not easy to create. It took the coordination of 10 homeowner associations and a vote of 86 percent of the 1,127 homeowners to create a new municipal district to buy the course and large clubhouse. The homeowners voted to tax themselves $5.2 million, buy the course and forever control the amenity and their property values. Known as the Heather Ridge Metropolitan District #1, it has a board of 10 members and three managers that operate the course. The golf course offers Annual Passes and recently introduced the Premium Golf Cards which offer 20% more golf for your money. The benefits of

the Premium Card are that they do not expire and they are offered in 4 different pricing tiers to fit your budget. There has been a buzz around the Denver Metro Area about their fleet of covered carts. Patrons are raving about their warm and comfortable rounds of golf on the chillier winter days. Several patrons indicated that they would normally not be playing in the winter but now they are because of the warmth, comfort and convenience of the fleet of covered carts. Green fees are $23 Monday through Thursday and $29 Friday through Sunday. Tee times are taken seven days in advance by calling 303-755-3550 or online at http://www.GolfClubAtHeatherRidge.com. Annual passes and tournament information are available at 303-755-3550 or via e-mail to audreyr@gcathr.com. The Golf Club at Heather Ridge will be offering an Exclusive Expo Special of 4 rounds of Golf for only $55* at the 2011 Denver Golf Expo. (see the ad in this edition for more details) Visit Booth #1009 to learn more about this great new public course in the heart of the Metro area. D

Nick 'The Hammer' Herrera Finishes 3rd at the 2010 Re/Max World Long Drive Competition

E

ach year over 10,000 competitors attempt to qualify for the RE/MAX World Long Drive Finals. Qualifying events take place in over 200 locations around the globe. There are six divisions all competing for prize money. The world finals are held in Mesquite, Nevada each year in October. This last year Colorado resident Nick 'The Hammer' Herrera had the privilege of competing in the finals in the Super Senior Division, ages 50 and up. “Competing against so many former world champions was very exciting,” stated The Hammer. “When I made it to the final round along with seven other competitors, it was surreal. It was a total thrill to be in the final round with so many legends.” When it was all said and done, The Hammer came in 3rd in the world in the Super Senior Division. Nick wants to send out a special thanks to his sponsors, including Total Beverage, Krank Golf and House of Forged. “I would also like to thank Mike

Gorton for all of his support. What a great competitor,” Nick commented. He went on to say that competing in the 2010 Re/Max World Long Drive Championship was one of the most awesome experiences in his life. The sportsmanship and camaraderie was amazing. D

I seldom recommend one golf magazine over another, but after reviewing this years equipment issue of GOLF DIGEST, I am making an exception. The February equipment issue, is one of the most informative issues I have read in some time. Besides the usual recommendations, listing rules, tips, and lessons, they have listed about every golf club of every brand on the market, with most, if not all of the physical characteristics of every club and every brand, including most of the performance characteristics. A key recommendation is that the one club that should be in every bag, is the Fairway Wood, that can be used for almost any fairway shot. Performance features are also listed for most clubs. I was also interested with the use of new materials , and the move to lighter shafts that usually provide for faster swing speeds. Had this information been available back in my club making days, I would be a rich man today Hit em long and straight! D

Colorado Women's Golf Association News

2010 Season Wraps Up for LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Aurora

By Amanda Schweda USGA P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Intern nother fun-filled season of the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Aurora program has come to an end. Throughout the 2010 season, 20 girls participated in the program. The goal of the program is to promote golf to girls, ages 7 to 17, of all abilities, in a fun and supportive environment where they can build friendships. The Colorado Women’s Golf Association (CWGA) administers the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Aurora program held at CommonGround Golf Course. Funding of this program is made possible in part by the generous support of CWGA members, so a big thank you goes out to all of these women. Through professional instruction and time on CommonGround’s Par-3 Kids Course participants learned important golf and life skills. The girls were able to learn from Elena King and Gary Davis, some of the best instructors Colorado has to offer. Elena is a Class A member of the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division. Elena is a member of the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division and a graduate of the University of Iowa. She is an accomplished player with many individual titles both as an amateur and a professional. Gary has been a

member of the PGA of America since 1995, and is a graduate of New Mexico State University. He has enjoyed success playing the game competitively at both the collegiate and professional levels. Both Elena and Gary have a true passion for helping others discover their potential. Each girl in the program receives one-on-one instruction to ensure they grasp the skills taught during each event. Besides learning golf skills, girls in the program had a ton of fun playing in scramble tournaments and participating in fun-themed days. Some of the most memorable activities included a Mother’s Day event, Bring a Friend Day, a breast cancer awareness event, and an end-of-the-season party. Games, prizes, and snacks were never lacking and neither were the smiles. During the events girls had the chance to dress up in Halloween costumes, make crafts, make new friends, and giggle.

The CWGA will be again be funding and administering the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf of Aurora program in 2011. Themed days, games, prizes, and fun are already in the works. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a member of the Aurora program or any of the other statewide LPGA-USGA Girls Golf programs, please contact the CWGA at 303-3667888 or 800-392-2942. By the Rules

Can Your Golf GPS Lead You Astray? You can be disqualified from the competition by using a device that measures distance, wind speed, wind direction, local temperature or slope. By Kim Nissen CWGA Director of Rules and Competitions hen buying a range finder or golf GPS, buyers beware! In an attempt to help your game by using a range finder or golf GPS to measure distances, you may inadvertently harm your game by using a device that does not conform with Rule 14-3 of The Rules of Golf. First of all it is important to know if the tournaments or league in which you play have adopted the Local Rule to allow the use of distance-measuring devices. If determined that your events allow the use of these devices, the Local Rule allows only distance to be measured. By using a device that measures distance in addition to providing information like wind speed, wind direction, local temperature, slope and/or gradient, you can be disqualified from the competition. The rationale behind disallowing these additional factors is that knowing some of this information could potentially assist you in making a stroke or gauge conditions that might affect your play. The same rules apply when purchasing a distance-measuring application for your cell phone. In addition to considering the features of these cell phone applications, you also need to be aware of other features installed on your phone (unrelated to golf such as a compass, level, or wind gauge, just to name a few) as these might help you in making a stroke. Even if

W

60

Expo Issue

these features installed on your phone are not used, you still are not permitted to use the device. Here is a sample of devices and applications already tested and known to be non-conforming: • The iPhone 3GS is non-conforming due to an uninstallable compass. • The GolfLogix or OnPar downloadable applications are non-conforming due to their ability to suggest a club to use in making a stroke. The bottom line is that you can receive only distance information when using a range finder, golf GPS, or cell phone. If the device or cell phone provide information like wind speed, wind direction, local temperatures, a compass, slope, gradient, or even suggests what club you should use for your next shot, the device is considered not to be in compliance with The Rules of Golf. If you have any questions whether a cell phone application or other distance-measuring device is in compliance with Rule 14-3 you can always call the Colorado Women’s Golf Association. As a member service, the CWGA is always willing and able to answer your Rules questions. We also provide our member clubs with Rules seminars upon request.

If you are not a member and are looking to become one, please contact the CWGA. For all inquires please call 303-366-7888/800-3922942 or email cwga@COgolf.org. D DIVOT Magazine
