Girls Have Great Opportunities To Play On College Golf Teams When it comes to college scholarships for junior golfers: Advantage girls By John Mooshie Divot Magazine Contributing Writer

everal years ago, Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida, ran three separate junior golf tournaments. According to Dawn Mercer, Innisbrook’s Director of Instruction, the events drew 169 boys and 49 girls aged 19 and younger or a ratio of 4:1. This ratio is typical of junior golf participation. Since there are fewer girls than boys participating in junior level golf, the girls have many more opportunities to play on college teams. There’s no doubt that golf is fast becoming one of the most competitive of college sports, especially in women’s sports. This creates an abundance of college golfing scholarship opportunities, a fact that has largely been ignored in the past. Recently, there were

about 253 Division I, 168 Division II, and 175 Division III schools sponsoring women’s golf teams. Division I schools are allowed to offer the equivalent of 6 full scholarships for women while Division II schools are allowed to offer the equivalent of 5.4. Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships. While it is difficult to confirm the number of women’s golf scholarships that were not awarded in recent years, it is estimated that more than 200 of the available girl’s golf scholarships went unused. The simple reason is that there are not enough young ladies playing golf. With the implementation of Title IX, colleges are required to have the same numbers of athletic scholarships for females and males. This provides a huge opportunity for female golfers. Colleges and universities that belong to the NCAA typically offer sports at the Division I, II, and III

level. Only about 2% of high school athletes are offered even a small sports scholarship from a Division I or Division II college. But it’s at the Division III level and its 400+ schools that the opportunities are enhanced and are discussed here. Division III colleges do not offer athletic scholarships. Those are restricted to Division I or II schools. But that doesn’t mean the Division III schools take their programs lightly or that they are not competitive. It simply means that the studentathletes are playing for the love of playing and competing. It also means that golfers who may not have the opportunity to be competitive in a Division I or II program can still participate and enjoy the benefits of being a member of a competitive collegiate program. Further, most of the Division III schools do an excellent job of providing financial aid in the form of academic scholarships, need-based grants and loans. Division III student-athletes are usually surprised at the amount of nonathletic financial assistance available to them and the quality of competition. In fact, a non-athletic financial aid package (based on grades and test scores or financial need, or both), could be worth more than a partial golf scholarship When you qualify for need-based financial aid or a merit scholarship of some sort (academics, arts, etc.) then you are eligible for and more likely to receive money to attend a Division III school. Better still, some Division III schools tend to favor athletic prospects. They just don’t offer money for playing a specific sport such as golf. But, what the schools can (and often) do is “sweeten the pot”. Suppose your family qualifies for needsbased financial aid and your daughter (or son) is playing or has played on the high school golf team. Rather than awarding a financial assistance package that consists mostly of an interest loan and some grant money, the college may offer a scholarship that is all or predominantly grant money. Or, if the college is unable to offer financial assistance, they may be able to compensate by increasing the odds of admission. The point here is that if there is a school that interests your

child, it doesn’t hurt to contact the coach and express your child’s interest in attending and playing at that particular school. These schools are always trying to attract the best student golfers that have equally impressive academic records or are able to demonstrate a deep need for financial aid.

A girl has a tremendous opportunity, especially at the Division III level, if she has a handicap of 15 or less, can score in the 80-110 range on a 5800 yard course, and has competed in state or local tournaments. There is a place for most girls who want to compete in golf for a Division III school. If she can break 85 from the forward tees and 100 from the middle tees, she has potential for a college team. The bottom line is if she can score around 95 under tournament conditions, college is a strong possibility. There are plenty of schools in need of female players. leading up to one’s senior year. Besides the NCAA, there are two other leading college athletic associations: The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA)

Both these organizations and their schools have scholarships available and present wonderful opportunities for young women athletes. In fact, it is in these organizations that most scholarships go unused. Scholarships at NJCAA are much less competitive because not enough students know about them and the coaches are not aware of the available talent. While recruiting timelines are very general in nature, there are some common elements that need to be followed. Freshman, sophomores, and juniors should...

• Pay close attention to their grades and class rank. • They should play in enough high

school and junior events in order to establish a handicap and tournament record. • Keep working on and improving their game with particular emphasis on the short game. • Narrow down the college list and make a number of unofficial visits Sophomores and juniors should...

• Begin researching various schools of interest • Meet with enrolled contemporaries and ask a lot of questions about the school, its program and coaches. • Take the SAT by your junior year. • Register for the NCAA Eligibility Center to certify academic and amateur credentials • Send personal introduction letters to the school’s golf coach and include your golfing resume Many Division III coaches recommend selecting schools within a player’s geographic comfort zone for competition travel, as well as schools that fit the student’s academic and size criteria. They caution that players need to be realistic about their fit for a particular college based on rankings. Once a student has

ost golfers slice the golf ball. Why is this bad? The slice is an inefficient, glancing blow that robs you of valuable distance and accuracy. A slice is caused by a combination of an open clubface and a path that is too much to the left. Here is how you can fix it. swing and an inside approach on the downswing. Carry the Tray

At the top of your backswing, cupping the left wrist can open your clubface. Use the image of a waiter holding a tray which will bend your right wrist and flatten your left wrist.

Grip

If you slice, the first thing you need to check is your grip as it may be too weak. Place tees in the crease between your thumbs and palms and check the location of the tees. If the tees are pointing more to the left, your grip is too weak. Make sure that the tees are more on the right side of the club to correct your weak grip.

Put Something in the Way

Place a headcover, water bottle or another obstacle outside of the target line and behind the ball getting in the way of an out-to-in path. The obstacle will help to encourage a downswing from the inside.

Setup

Most slicers have a poor setup that has the spine tilted toward the target. This encourages an upright backswing and an out-to-in downswing. The correct this, get setup and then touch the outside of your right knee with your right hand and then grip the club. This will help you to feel the correct spine tilt for a good back-

or over 30 years Garden City, Kansas has been host to the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am Golf Tournament. One of Kansas’ premier golf tournaments, the Southwest Kansas ProAm offers five days of exciting golf events for amateur and professional golfers. The 2013 Southwest Kansas Pro-Am will kick off on Wednesday, August 7 with the Ladies Pro-Am Golf Tournament. Teams of three ladies will take to Buffalo Dunes Municipal Golf Course with an Adams Golf Pro Tour Series Professional. Participating women will receive an official Southwest Kansas Pro-Am player package including shirt, beverage coupons, lunch and program. Wednesday, also features our Corporate Appreciation Party and Hall of Fame Celebration. Thursday events include a corporate shootout held at The Golf Club at Southwind wherein teams of three participate with one of the top twenty finishers from the Adams Tour’s Young Life Abilene Open. The main tournament of the Southwest Kansas Pro-Am takes place on Friday and Saturday, August 9-10. Over 225 amateur golfers and over 100 professionals will take to both Buffalo Dunes and the Golf Club at Southwind. All players will play both courses, one on Friday and one on Saturday. The amateur player package includes; player shirt and cap, beverage tickets and dinner tickets to both Friday and Saturday evening dinner for player and guest, as well as green and cart fees. The week ends on Sunday, August 11, with the top 40 professionals competing to be crowed the winner of the 24th Annual Southwest Kansas Pro-Am. Notable professional winners and participants include Steve Jones (1983, 1984), Bruce Vaughn (1987, 2005) and Gary Woodland (2008), Stewart Cink, Jim Furyk, and Bob Tway. Great Courses Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, ranked as the No. 1 municipally-owned golf course in Kansas by Golf Digest magazine. It has been recognized by Golf Magazine and Travel & Leisure Magazine as places to play and best bangs for the buck. Challenging, enjoyable and affordable, Buffalo Dunes will give you a little bit of Scottish feel as it is nestled among the

historic sand hills six miles south of Garden City. Beautifully conditioned, the Dunes has bluegrass fairways, wellmaintained bent grass greens and native grasses that challenges the golfer and provides a memorable experience. The course can play at differing lengths based upon a player’s skill level, with yardages from 5,452 to the championship tees of 6,806 yards. Buffalo Dunes has played host to numerous Kansas Golf Association state championships through the years as well as hosting high school regional and state tournaments. First time players to the course will be amazed at how demanding the course is, at first glance people think this will be an easy course to play due a lack of the standard trees along the fairway. Founded in 1977, the Newborn Intensive Care Unit serves the critical medical needs of infants and families in western Kansas, eastern Colorado and the Oklahoma panhandle. With the only Level II NBICU in the area, St. Catherine Hospital serves hundreds of families each year, saving families the stress and expense of having to seek medical care more than 200 miles from home. The real genius in the design of Paa-Ko Ridge is what I call the “evolutionary experience”. It applies to a course you not only don’t tire of playing, but one you come to appreciate more the more you play it. Playing Paa-Ko Ridge for the first time it’s easy to get lost in the absolute beauty surrounding you and lose focus on the actual golf. This is a good thing; you know you are in a special place when the physical beauty of the design and construction of a golf course distracts you from the strategic thinking necessary to navigate a course. When you get the feeling the course just evolved out of the natural landscape, the Architect and the crew maintaining the course have attained an increasingly rare level of accomplishment. Progressing on in our “evolutionary experience” is sight lines and aiming points to the fairways from the tee boxes. While the fairways are generously wide with aiming points indicated by white poles in the fairway, most players ignore that valuable information the first couple of times around the course because your eye deceives you into you playing a line that can bring trouble into play. It is about round three or four when you finally decide the person who put those poles in the ground might know a little something about navigating the golf course. that the fairways really are pretty wide and you aren’t saving much yardage by trying those tight shots into the apex of the bend in the fairway anyway. To complete the “evolutionary experience” you have to understand the shots you choose to hit to the greens are about a lot more than distance, line and club selection although they are all critical too. Great course design like Paa-Ko Ridge requires you to imagine what Ken Dye had in mind when he sited the greens as they are. All are large, undulating and have multiple tiers. How did he envision the shot required to get it close to the flag on any given hole and pin placement. At Paa-Ko Ridge you ignore this at your own peril. The designed landing areas on each green require you to consider the best and worst case scenario for every approach shot. For example, say you’re looking at a back pin on an upper tier over a bunker. Your first thought is the shot requires you to try and hit it over a ridge to an exact distance and try and stop the ball within a yard or two to be in birdie putt range and the worst case is you come up short and roll down the ridge to the tier below and fight it out with your putter trying to avoid a 3 putt. What the design of the course will reward is to fly the ball at least the full distance to the hole, even 5-10 yards past the hole and by design the ball will roll back towards the hole and give you that same birdie putt with half the stress. When you evaluate the shot with what the designer of the course intended, you have “evolved” to a better score and more appreciation of a masterfully designed golf course, like Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Club. Great golf courses abound in Wales and three of the best are at The Celtic Manor in Newport. The 2010 Course, site of the 2010 Ryder Cup, the Roman Road Course and the Montgomerie Course are great tracks at reasonable prices. Near Cardiff is the Marriott St. Pierre with its championship Old Course. This too is a great stay & play location. I also recommend Royal Porthcawl located just outside of Cardiff. It’s a true links course that rivals anything in Scotland or Ireland. To the northwest is Royal St. Davids. It has one of the most spectacular backdrops for a golf course anywhere. Further north, you’ll find Conwy and Bull Bay.

I visited the Dublin area in April and played two courses at Druids Glen (Heath and Glen). I also played Royal Dublin, a great old course with a strong links style. Just 14 miles west of Dublin is my new favorite place to stay & play. The Carton House, an 18th century renovated estate sitting on 1700 spectacular acres, has two impressive courses - the O’Meara and the Montgomerie. I also visited Dromoland Castle, an 11th century castle updated to appeal to today’s luxury traveler. With it’s onsite championship course, it is also one of my favorites and conveniently close to the Shannon airport. My last stop was Greg Norman's exciting Doonbeg Resort. Fabulous is my word for this place. The resort has one of Ireland’s best courses and some of its most comfortable lodges. England’s Golf Coast– Dave & Peter

Dave and I barely had time for a pint between rounds at the three British Open course and other hidden gems near Liverpool. Royal Liverpool, Royal Lytham & St. Annes and Royal Birkdale (our favorite and site of the 2008 British Open) were every bit as terrific as advertised. Other gems such as Formbys and the S & A stand out as well. The northwest coast of England has many fine courses, great accommodations and fewer golfers competing for prime tee times. Due to its location, the warming Gulf Stream makes playing golf in early April comfortable and fun.

There aren’t many places in the world where the dollar is strong, fabulous golf is inexpensive, steak is as available and priced as MacDonald’s hamburgers and fine wine cost about as much as a six pack of Coors. I love this place! Ten days and six rounds of golf around Buenos Aires and Patagonia convinced me that Argentina's is a golfer’s paradise. The British/Scottish influence on golf course design is most apparent around Buenos Aires. Clubs such as the Jockey Club, Los Olivos, Buenos Aires Golf Club and San Andres Golf Club (translation: St. Andrews Golf Club) are fabulous examples of the United Kingdom's influence on club house and course design. In Patagonia, land of “gauchos” (local cowboys), rugged snow covered mountains and deep blue lakes, you will find more modern courses such as Arelauquen, Llao Llao and Jack Nicklaus’ new course Chapelco. AimPoint Green Reading... Never Guess at Where to Aim Again! By Scotty Hofer Divot Contributing Writer

hat is AimPoint? AimPoint is a putt predictive technology that was developed by Mark Sweeney and was the “blue line” overlayed on the greens on the Thursday and Friday broadcasts of the PGA Tour events on The Golf Channel in 2012. Mark and his team went to PGA Tour stops and computer mapped the greens with a laser machine. The accumulated green data was used in a computer software program which accurately predicted the path the putt should take in order to go in. This same technology has been put into an Instructional program that teaches you the science of how to read greens in a fun yet informative clinic. You will go from thinking that a putt breaks this way or that, to knowing exactly how much break to play for any putt. And the cool thing is that it works anywhere! There are two levels of training – Fundamentals and Advanced Concepts. The fundamental clinics teach

you everything you need to know about the AimCharts, the system and reading every putt within 20’ of the cup. The Advanced clinics go one step further and teach you how to handle all those “tricky” putts over knolls, shoulders, swales, crowns, saddles and everything outside of 20’. You also learn how to utilize the concepts to enhance your short game and approach shots as well as green charting and tournament preparation. The clinics are approximately 2 - 2 ½ hours long and class sizes are kept to a maximum of 8 – 10 students to ensure an intimate learning experience for all involved. Who Teaches AimPoint? pplewood Golf Course has always been a course that welcomed any necessary changes. This started back in 1965 when the golf course officially became Applewood, until 1965 the course was Rolling Hills Country Club. The change in name also meant that the course was now open to the public. Since becoming a public course Applewood is one of the most played public golf courses in the Metro area, in May Applewood averaged over 200 rounds each day. Golfers ask what keeps bringing golfers back to Applewood? Applewood is built on 46 acres of land that is above the Coors brewing aquifer. Being above the Coors aquifer draws golfers to Applewood, and not just the diehard Coors fans, but because sitting above the aquifer means the course is not able to use any type of chemicals. This unique management approach leads to a golfing experience that can only be found in a few places nationwide. But don’t let the lack of chemicals fool you, Superintendent Matt Rusch always has the course in wonderful shape. Mr. Rusch does such an amazing job he was named Superintendent of the year by Touchstone Golf in 2011. He was chosen out of a group of over 25 superintendents that make up the Touchstone Golf. In 2008, Touchstone Golf was awarded the lease of Applewood. With the support from Touchstone, Applewood has been able to make several improvements. In the last three years, there have been a

number of greens that have been re-sodded. Along with new greens the course is spending this summer re-sodding their tee boxes and in some cases starting from scratch and building completely new tee boxes. The biggest improvement at Applewood is most definitely The Vista at Applewood, The Vista is a beautiful banquet facility that is available to host any gathering whether it is lunch after a golf tournament, a wedding, or even a wake. Yes, that’s right some people love Applewood so much they actually ask to have their wake held at their favorite golf course. For weddings, a future bride would be hard pressed to find a better view than the one from the ceremony location just east of the ninth hole at Applewood. When looking west from the ceremony, the guests can see down the mountain range all the way to the Flatirons just west of Boulder. The Vista has become part of the community surrounding Applewood. Visitors who didn’t play golf before return to the course to learn to play or just enjoy the environment in the foothills of Colorado.

Beyond the rare chemical free course and the huge improvements, Applewood is able to attract golfers because for most people once they play there they are hooked for life. There are so many golf courses in the Metro area so what really gets them hooked on Applewood? It’s truly simple a combination of great golf, breathtaking views of the Colorado Rockies, fair green fees, and most importantly Applewood is a very friendly golf course. When customers walk in to the pro shop for the first time they will hear fellow customers being greeted by name

by the pro shop staff, they will also hear the golf course staff holding conversations with customers instead of acting to busy. The staff always goes out of their way to catch up with golfers they haven’t seen for a while. This seems like a minor detail but it is often those minor details that make the golfers feel comfortable and want to return.
