Understanding the Keys to Proper Alignment By C.J. Perry, PGA DIVOT Contributing Writer y students at GolfTEC at Family Sports Center in Centennial often suffer from one of the most common faults in golf: poor alignment.

M

Believe it or not, alignment can be challenging for even the highest levels of golfers, and poor alignment leads to improper swing habits. One of the challenges with alignment is the fact that our eyes are inside the golf ball with most of our full swing shots. Unlike putting, and chipping to a degree, our eyes are not over our target line. Our perspective makes alignment a chore!

When you watch a PGA Tour event on television, you’ll notice players have a precise pre-shot routine, and part of this routine is proper alignment. When tour players align

themselves to their target you’ll notice every single one stands behind the golf ball to start. What they are doing is pinpointing the line from the golf ball to their target. After they have visualized their target line, many players look for a spot in front of their golf ball along that line, possibly only a few inches away from the ball. Many instructors refer to this as an “intermediary target.” As a tour player walks up to address the golf ball, they first focus on getting their club face pointed at their intermediary target. Then they set their feet, hips and shoulders parallel to where their clubface is aimed.

Most amateur golfers do the opposite. They align their body to what they think is their target and then aim their club face parallel to that line. The result? Poor alignment and subconscious confusion, which lead to compensations during the swing to get the ball started on the intended target line.

One of the best ways to visualize the parallel lines is to imagine train tracks. Your feet,

start by checking your alignment. Once you know where you’re actually aiming, it’s much easier to determine whether your ball is starting on line or not, and if the ball is curving left or right of that line.

A great way to practice alignment is by placing a golf club or alignment stick on the ground while you practice to help you visualize the parallel lines your body and the club face create.

hips and shoulders are on the inside of the train tracks and your club face is on the outer part of the train tracks. The outer line where the club face is pointed should be the line that is pointed at your target. If you are a player struggling with direction control,

The first step for most golfers to find game improvement is to properly align themselves to their target. Once you can consistently align yourself to your target, hitting the ball toward that target every time is the next step! If you feel like you could use some help with your game, contact your nearest GolfTEC Coach today!

New Academy for Young Female Golfers

F

ormer LPGA champion mentors young athletes to extraordinary breakthroughs in the game, and

in life. Colorado Avid Golfer Magazine’s 2016 Best Instructor for Women and LPGA Champion and Teaching Professional, Lauren Howe, announces the opening of GREAT Girls and Golf, a customized, comprehensive learning platform for middle and high school girls (ages 12-19). This collaborative effort with local business entrepreneur Sandra King presents a three-dimensional approach to golf: Head • Heart • Game. Young students are given the opportunity to master the game of golf while also gaining a GREAT sense of self and a plan for reaching their competitive and/or scholarship dreams. In her 13 years on the LPGA tour and over 35 years as a teaching pro, Lauren has competed against and trained some of the most successful female golfers and major contributors to the game. Having that insight into the strengths, strategies, motivational techniques and winning attitudes that makes a champion is rare. As Lauren states, “Our dream in creating the GREAT Girls

Est. 1938

and Golf program is to share that knowledge, provide a fast track for young female golfers on their road to excellence, and bring more recognition to girls golf in Colorado.” GREAT Girls and Golf offers a variety of instructional workshops, lecture series led by experts in nutrition, mental strategies and golf fitness, and for more advanced players, a year-round customized program. The philosophy of the Head • Heart • Game is integrated into every learning situation. In Sandy’s words, “There are so many life lessons that can be acquired through studying and playing the game of golf. Our focus is to give the girls the tools to make good decisions and handle changes on the course that can spill over into other aspects of their lives.” Highlighting the summer’s events is a Short Game League, a unique and fun combination of on-course training and competition on the quickest way to lower scores: the balance between the inner game and the short game. GAME GOLF LIVE makes the Golf Range Association of America’s top 25 list he award-winning golf shot tracker, GAME GOLF LIVE, added to its accolades as one of the best pieces of new gear for your game in 2016. The Golf Range Association of America (GRAA) recently issued its annual list of “2016 Top 25 Teaching and Training Aids.” GAME GOLF LIVE is the only wearable, realtime shot-tracker to make this year’s list. GAME GOLF LIVE is totally new technology and the only shot tracker that is allowed in competition play under the Rules of Golf issued by the USGA and R&A and is being used by golf professional, Maria Verchenova, to train for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Makers of GAME GOLF LIVE recently announced two major upgrades that squarely put the device at the top of the technological pack when it comes to analyzing your game the way the pros do. “When golfers immediately see what happens to their shots on their phones, smart watches or computers,” said GAME GOLF CEO John McGuire, “they gain a whole new understanding of what’s happening on the course. It’s also a great way to make the most of coaching sessions to shave strokes off student’s games. We are so glad that GRAA recognizes the power of technology to help people become better players.” GAME GOLF LIVE uses an updated wearable GPS device that communicates with feather-light sensor tags attached to the top of the grip on each club and an integrated software platform that automatically tracks and captures

performance data, in real-time. GAME GOLF LIVE has a powerful rangefinder; and data from every shot, including putts, is instantly displayed on your iOS or Android phone and on your smart watch. On courses where you can’t use your phone, the information connects to the device; and you can see it on the 19th hole. Strokes Gained Analysis compares your play to that of a scratch golfer with robust metrics off the tee, on approach shots, during the short game and for putting. The system proactively gives you

TIPS that will pinpoint improvement opportunities. GAME GOLF LIVE has a new feature that not only helps golfers track more accurate putting stats from specific pin placements, but also helps other golfers who will play the same course on the same day. The new Pin Placement feature allows golfers to select the edit button on their phones, zoom in on each green and drag the pin to its precise location, resulting in putting stats that are 100 percent accurate on every green. This feature now allows next players to play the course on the same day to see automatically accurate pin placements so they can truly plan their game strategies. The new feature also allows for precise adjustment of ball locations on the green relative to the pin, further enhancing the accuracy of the data. The pin placement feature is currently available on iOS (iPhone) platforms and coming very soon to Android systems. The second upgrade is the new Auto Hole-Switching feature that works more smoothly and handles multiple golf situations better than other competing devices. With this feature, GAME GOLF LIVE tracks a golfer’s movements from hole to hole, automatically updating the system. With this upgrade, the system will truly operate in real time, the whole time you are on the course. Auto Hole-Switching is live on both Android and iOS (iPhone) platforms. olf needs a King. Not so much the PGA, LPGA, Euro tour, or any other current golf body governed by a Commissioner, President, Chairman, or whoever. I’m talking about the need for public golfers to have a King. A King for golf played on municipal courses by hackers and whackers and hustlers and muscleers. The golf industry is always seeking for ways to grow the game. Perhaps they should find a King to oversee the Kingdom. To implement ways to improve some of the good, and to rectify much of the bad. I appoint thee, King Wiff, ruler of Duffington. Golf has been experiencing many of the same problems for a long time. These issues get magnified today with our ever shortened attention spans. Golf can sometimes take more than half of the day when you include the travel and cocktails, and even more time to practice enough as to not hold up play. Then, let’s not forget how the business of golf has slowly sucked much of the fun out of the game by brainwashing us to believe we need new, better, balls, and a $500 driver every year. What about the courses who employ ex UPS supervisors to be rangers who scold you around the links trying to keep you under 4 hours, including three visits from the astronomically priced, beer cart. Finally, golf is hard, perhaps too hard to be a sport for the masses. However, there’s hope. Golf isn’t any easier to master than baseball and those guys figured out that fast-pitch softball could be played by many who couldn’t play hardball. And

when those who couldn’t play fast-pitch got the itch, slow-pitch was invented. And now we have co-ed slow pitch so that just about anyone can participate. So, worry not ye fellow Duffitonians, King Wiff is here to help you find ways to grow, speed-up, and to simplify your game. How do we get the villagers to play faster and still enjoy their experience? There are currently experiments being conducted trying to encourage more players to play 9 holes, rather than 18. Some courses offer a 6-hole option. We can also alter current rules, and create new ones designed to help pace of play and make the game easier for the commoners. These few things alone are certain to get more villagers to take up this nutty game. There has to be real changes, not superficial ones, and public golf must stop trying to emulate professional golf. Like softball, golf must find ways to make it more fun for those who will never be able to take it to the next level. Stop making public golfers try to hit it farther, and play under many of the same penal conditions as the pros. From this day forward King Wiff decrees that all public golfers tee from where their handicaps say they should. The “Golds” will be reserved for professionals or special events. The “Blacks” will be for 10 handicaps and below. The “Blues” are for golfers carrying handicaps from 10-20. Those who are in the 20-30 range play from the “Whites”, and the “Reds” are for all 30 handicaps and above. Under this plan women will simply move up 1 so that the

“Blacks” are for the pros, “Blues” for scratch to 10 handicaps, “Whites” for 1020’s, “Reds” for 20-30’s, and “Pink”, “Yellow”, or some other pastel color for all the 30 handicaps and above. Players will be allowed to move up, but cannot move back until they can prove the appropriate handicap to match their egos. All out-of-bounds shots will now be played laterally, just like shots lost in a lake or other hazard. How can we claim to be trying to speed up play when a ball that rolls 3 inches out-of-bounds costs you more than an ugly, sliced, sky ball that lands 100 yards into the middle of a lake? You will now only be allowed 2 minutes to find a lost ball, after that you must drop and move on. From now on if you putt and hit the flagstick from 65 feet while trying to lag and speed up play, rather than a penalty stroke you will receive a free sleeve of balls. There will now be a 2 stoke penalty for taking the game too serious. This includes throwing clubs, balls, or any loud verbal rants containing more than a dozen naughty words. Each foursome will now be allowed to ignore rules they find ignorant like, asking what club someone used, or

changing balls when arriving at the green. Everyone can now better their lie in the fairway and take gimme’s on anything inside the leather. Courses will now be required to hire rangers with common sense and starters who don’t think they are important. There will be shock collars for committing dumb golf acts, like not picking up after reaching double digits, leaving a club behind more than once a round, yelling at someone for being slow while two groups are waiting behind you, or for breaking from the heard to go scrounge for lost golf balls. From now on there will be affordable cart food and drink, and free sunscreen. (Find a sponsor) Cart girls will no longer be allowed to sit texting or talking on the phone while you’re hitting. Golfers will no longer be allowed to hit on the cart girls. There will be penalties when your phone goes off, or you get caught talking on it. And we will now get rain checks for things other than rain, like, heat, fatigue, the feeling that it’s just not your day. I would hope by now, it’s apparent your King has nothing but concern and love for the game of golf, and for the all the sorry sods who have become hopelessly addicted to its magical powers. The changes I demand are intended to make this silly game easier and more fun, not to inflame the Kingdom. Enjoy, and thank thee later. D

Cover Feature

Experience mountain golf at its finest! outed through towering pines, quaking aspens, crystal clear creeks and trout filled lakes; the Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks overloads the senses with Colorado’s mountain beauty. This Tom Lehman, Hurdzan/Fry designed masterpiece is destined to be one of the finest golf courses in all of Colorado. The Raven is located in the majestic Gore Mountain Range and offers panoramic vistas at every turn. Stretching from 5235 to 7413 yards, the Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks offers a challenge for golfers of all abilities.

R

The Raven Golf Club offers an appealing blend of traditional and contemporary architectural design styles. One feature of the golf course that is unique is the design of the bunkers. Patterned after legendary golf course architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie, native grasses frame the bunkers and offer a dramatic visual contrast to the emerald fairways. While they may look intimidating, the bunkers are placed as guide posts to show the golfer the way or to save errant shots.

Among the wildest and best maintained in Colorado, the fairways provide very large landing areas that invite balls to run another 15 to 30 yards. Greens averaging 6,500-square feet make for great targets as well. Golfers begin their adventure on a 436yard par 4. A good play is driver down the middle, which leaves a well placed short iron for a downhill second into a large green surrounded by bunkers right and left and a water hazard long. While there are some good elevation changes throughout the front nine, golfers are in for a treat once they reach the par 3 eighth. Playing 186 from the back tees, players will hit a mid to short iron into this well guarded green. Due to the significant elevation change, golfers should play 20-25 yards less than the actual yardage. Golfers then come to the par 4 ninth. Often considered one of the best holes in Colorado, this 471 par 4 lets golfers

grip it and rip it for one of the longest drives of the day. The elevation drop is over 200 feet from tee to green and the ball can roll out an additional 30 yards off the tee. The back 9 provides a challenging test of golf with several long par 3’s and two

tough par 5’s including #16, the signature hole of the course, and a long par 5 that meanders downhill and doglegs to the left. The best approach to the green is from the left side of the fairway, but beware of the deep bunker guarding the left side of the green. When on the tee box, bring your camera to soak in the Gore Range and Williams Fork Range. Thre Raven is more than a symbol; It is a level of unequalled commitment to every facet of the game of golf. From spectacular course layouts by world-renowned designers and golf professionals to world-class amenities coupled with extraordinary guest service, the Raven philosophy has become synonymous with the very best! The Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks provides our guests with memories that will last a lifetime. Come experience mountain golf at its finest, the Raven Golf Club at Three Peaks!
