The Dixon in 2012 It has been an honor to serve as the Chairman of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2011 and 2012. The Dixon is becoming well known for the outstanding exhibitions we produce and circulate to other venues. In 2012, we organized or facilitated every show that appeared in our galleries—truly an impressive programming achievement. We demonstrated our resourcefulness by entering into yet another collection exchange, this time with the Speed Art Museum in Louisville. The Dixon’s outstanding French paintings dazzled audiences in Kentucky, and made it possible for us to enjoy Rembrandt, Rubens and the Golden Age of Painting here in Memphis. On the heels of that show, we opened Modern Dialect:  American Paintings from the John and Susan Horseman Collection, which will continue to travel to museums across the country well into 2014. We are grateful to the Horsemans for placing these outstanding works of art in our care. The Dixon hosted another brilliant installment of the Memphis Flower Show in 2012, as thousands of daffodils, tulips, and dogwoods bloomed in the gardens. With the Centro Culturale, we organized MemphisVivé, an exhibition of works by Latino artists in our community. We presented forty years of the inspired ceramic forms of Memphians Brin and Dale Baucum; in the gardens and Garrott Court, we showcased the work of two outstanding sculptors, Lee Littlefield and Jim Buchman; working with the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, Georgia, we featured the work of contemporary painter, Jonathan Green; and we saw our eighteenth-century German porcelain collection as never before in an exhibition called Fire and Desire. In 2012, the Dixon made its most significant fine art acquisition in years: a large and impressive Jacques-Émile Blanche pastel portrait of Eugenia Huici de Errázuriz. While Fire and Desire was on view throughout the museum, we undertook a much-needed renovation of the large gallery, where our German porcelain is typically displayed. Perhaps most noteworthy of all, we completed A History of German Porcelain in the Eighteenth Century:TheWarda Stevens Stout Collection, a major publication and catalogue of our collection that has been many years in the making. As always, the Dixon strived in 2012 to become a stronger organization and a more desirable workplace. The introduction of the Altru admission system allows us to better know and serve our members and visitors. We surveyed our board and staff for their perspectives on the Dixon and to benefit from their wisdom and experience. And we formulated a compensation policy to help us retain the talented staff that makes all these good things possible. It has been my pleasure to lead the Dixon team in 2011 and 2012, and I look forward to serving this great organization for years to come. Stephen C. Reynolds Chairman Emeritus

The Future of the Dixon It has become the custom for incoming Chairs of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees to announce in this report that the best years of the organization are yet to come. It might seem a cliché if it had not proven to be the case year after year. There are many reasons why the Dixon has remained on its steady ascent, but not the least of which is generous and inspired leadership. For the past two years we have been led by Stephen C. Reynolds, and we can scarcely thank him enough for his vision and commitment to the organization. We are most grateful. Without question, the Dixon has been bold in its ambition over the last few years. The organization is less inclined to ponder what we can or cannot do than to reach for what may seem at first well beyond the grasp of a small institution. Our determination to succeed has led to any number of audacious achievements, from international exhibitions, to incredible community service through our education and outreach programs, to unforgettable performances and events, to glorious gardens initiatives. In 2013, the Dixon will chart further advances through the formulation of a Master Plan for the facilities and grounds. It will take all of us — members, donors, trustees, staff, and volunteers—to develop this plan, and even more to bring it to fruition. But armed with such a blueprint for the future, I can comfortably predict that the best days of the Dixon are indeed ahead of us. I am pleased to be Chairman of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2013 and 2014, and I look forward to all that awaits us. D. Stephen Morrow Chairman

Introduction At the end of each fiscal year, for us the calendar year, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens produces a report on the organization’s activities, finances, and progress. Our aim is to publish an attractive and readable accounting of the year we just completed, but we also strive for objectivity in our assessments. The Dixon’s Annual Report 2012 is an attempt to create a snapshot or a synopsis of the year as it unfolded. In reading this small book, we hope the glimpse it provides of the exhibitions we originated, the acquisitions we made, the outgoing loans we approved, the gardens programs we produced, the education vehicles we created, and the special events and performances we hosted will offer a sense of what the Dixon was trying to achieve in 2012, and how well we succeeded. As always, this report includes a breakdown of our audience numbers, our progress as a fundraising and membership organization, an accounting of the earned income we generated, and a provisional statement of our financial position at the end of 2012. We also include our audited financials from the previous fiscal year, 2011. Careful reading of the 2012 financial information offers a sense of how nimble and fiscally responsible the Dixon is. Recognizing early that the uncertainty of 2012 would make it a challenging fundraising year, the Dixon staff trimmed $240,000 in expenses from its approved operating budget. That thrift enabled the Dixon to again end the year with a balanced budget. As director of the Dixon, I benefit from access to an extraordinary and generous Board of Trustees. They are wise and judicious in their counsel. I also have the pleasure of supervising a dedicated and seemingly inexhaustible staff, each unwilling to settle for anything less than excellence.
