Yes! We're Open Family Day

The Dixon in 2019 It was my pleasure to serve as Chair of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2019. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead an institution so trusted by its community and so well supported by its many friends. We began 2019 with an intense period of new gardens construction that coincided with our entire seventeen-acre property exploding into bloom. As 100,000 tulips and other flowering bulbs were popping out of the ground, the gardens staff along with various contractors were planting trees and woody plants, building a new water feature, erecting retaining walls, installing irrigation and lighting, and creating pathways in two separate areas of the gardens. The results speak for themselves and I am deeply grateful to the generous donors who made these gardens possible. They are listed later in this report. The curatorial staff was busy too in 2019, producing five Dixon-organized exhibitions. We started the year with Eye to Eye, our permanent collection show, followed by William McGregor Paxton and Elizabeth Okie Paxton and Countess de Castiglione in late April; Kate Freeman Clark went on view in July; and Friedel Dzubas: The Ira A. Lipman Family Collection debuted in October. The curatorial team also showcased 25 more Memphis area contemporary artists in our Mallory and Wurtzburger series, we continued to oversee the tour of our Isabelle de Borchgrave exhibition, and we sent our permanent collection show to the Baker Museum in Naples, Florida. In May, we opened the new Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building, appropriately enough with a Family Day—the free and much-loved community events we do four times each year—and formally dedicated the spectacular new Farnsworth Building in September! As the Farnsworths are well aware, the Dixon’s already energetic education program immediately expanded and accelerated, including more wellness programs, and more access for seniors, adults, students and children. What great work this team is doing! The Dixon staged another strong roster of special events throughout the year, programs designed to make us more versatile and to offer more portals to participation. Wine Down at the Dixon started us off in February; Food Truck Fridays began in April; and we hosted Symphony in the Gardens on Mother’s Day in May. Art on the Rocks came in September; Art on Fire in October; and last year, Opera Memphis was in residency at the Dixon from the fall through the holidays. There is always something special to see and do at the Dixon! I offer my deepest thanks to the dedicated Dixon staff and Board of Trustees for making my first year as Chair so meaningful. I extend an equal measure of thanks to you, our generous donors and members, who make so many good things possible at the Dixon.

Introduction At the end of each fiscal year—for us, the last day of December—the Dixon Gallery and Gardens staff begins work on a report of the institution’s activities, finances, and successes in achieving a range of strategic goals over the previous twelve months. We strive for accuracy in our evaluations. But we also try to make the narratives interesting and readable, the layouts and photography appealing, and the data illuminating and digestible. To the readers of the Dixon’s Annual Report 2019, either at the time of publication or many years later, we hope this small book offers an encapsulating glimpse of the year we had in the galleries, gardens, and classrooms. You will see in this report the exhibitions we originated and traveled, the publications we produced, the institutional partners we attracted, the acquisitions we made, our activity in the gardens, the impressive number of learning opportunities we created, and the events and performances we hosted. Collectively, they offer a sense of the goals we set for ourselves in 2019, and how well we performed in relationship to them. I think after reading the Annual Report 2019, you will see that the Dixon is a strong institution only getting stronger and that our members and donors are a big part of the reason why. We again generated more Dixon programs last year than ever before, and our audiences value the experiences we create. We saw growth in our Membership totals in 2019, and we were once again effective fundraisers—especially for our capital projects and for the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment Fund. But our fundraising for the Dixon operating budget was also vigorous, and we again ended the fiscal year with a balanced budget. I hope you find this Annual Report 2019 compelling and useful. Please contact me if you have any questions about its contents.

LIZ AND TOMMY FARNSWORTH EDUCATION BUILDING In 2019, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens completed construction of the Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building. Support for this expansion represents the largest contribution in Dixon history from a single donor. Coinciding with the new education building, surrounding gardens were designed to bring beauty to the space, but more importantly to educate visitors through a dialogue between art and nature. The Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building will better connect the existing museum and garden programs, and be a catalyst for launching new experiences at the Dixon. The building includes indoor and outdoor classrooms, a permanent interactive gallery, a small greenhouse, and offices for Dixon education staff. The new building opened to the public on May 4, celebrating with a Family Day. In September, a dedication ceremony was held in honor of Liz and Tommy Farnsworth. LEFT FROM TOP Group

MILESTONES Dixon Blooms: Tulipmania featured seventy varieties of around 100,000 bulbs planted the previous fall for a spectacular spring display. Our dedicated garden volunteers logged over 2,800 hours. The Dixon Tree Team, comprised of local professionals and enthusiastic amateurs, continue to assess the health and wellbeing of all the trees at the Dixon. They will also make recommendations for management of our canopy while keeping in mind the Dixon’s priorities for preservation and safety. Garden staff and volunteers spend hundreds of hours each year planting, growing, cutting, and arranging flowers and foliage to adorn the galleries and brighten our special events. We continue to make that connection clearer for our visitors by placing labels next to the floral arrangements that list the genus, species, common name, and where on the property the plant materials were grown. These labels create teachable moments. As our visitors enjoy the beauty of the arrangements, the labels emphasize the connection between the gardens and the galleries. In 2019, the Dixon garden staff completed the construction of new gardens which are universally accessible, designed in-house by Dale Skaggs, Director of Horticulture. The new gardens fuse seamlessly with existing gardens, integrating the old with the new and maintaining the look and feel of our traditional Georgian architecture. The Dixon Garden Fair, one of our largest volunteer efforts, continued to provide Dixon members and visitors with access to hard to find and rare plants, as well as time-tested performers for Mid-South gardens. The gardens presented seven excellent lectures throughout the year featuring nationally and internationally known speakers on horticultural subjects including ferns, tulips, and international gardens.

NEW GARDEN SPACES Construction of new gardens and the stage has been supported by a number of generous donors in the community. Thank you to those donors for making this possible. The area surrounding the Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building is a site where education, fine art, and horticultural programming intersect. The new spaces include: The Peggy Webster Canale Fountain The Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment Garden The Suzanne Mallory Formal Garden The Phillip H. McNeill Family Garden The Nancy and Steve Morrow Garden The Jean Lewis and Thomas Russell Price Garden The Owen Outdoor Classroom The Mary Alice Quinn Butterfly Garden The Gayle W. and W. Jacques Schuler Garden The Brenda and Lester Crain Sculpture Circle The Ann and Steve Reynolds Learning Garden The Reynolds Family Greenhouse The Ruthie and Casey Bowlin Stage has undergone a complete renovation; leveling the land for better seating, adding electrical for better audio and lighting, and adding a large stone stage to provide a home for many programs and events. The annual Symphony in the Gardens, a 40-year tradition in partnership with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra on May 12, 2019, was the first of many public programs to take place on the new stage.

OUTREACH

COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Dixon serves its community through a variety of outreach programs. Many organizations partner to create Dixon experiences away from the galleries and gardens.

The Dixon participates in several community events, offsite professional development opportunities, and festivals throughout the year. At these events, Dixon staff connects with community members by offering, program and exhibition information, art making activities and free passes.

Adopt-a-School Since 2007, through the Shelby County Schools’ Adopta-School program, the Dixon adopted the neighborhood school Willow Oaks Elementary. Since then, Dixon outreach instructors provide art lessons to all their pre-k and kindergarten classes - approximately 150 students monthly. In 2015, Sharpe Elementary was added as a second adopted school and instructors visit twice each school year to see all Sharpe students. In addition to outreach visits, students are invited back to the Dixon to explore the galleries and gardens and complement their art lessons. The Dixon provides bus funding for these visits.

The Dixon saw 2,898 people at community events in 2019. Shelby County Schools’ Artsfest Shelby Farms Park’s Down to Earth Fest Memphis Area Masster Gardeners Spring Fling Memphis Public Library’s Explore Memphis Memphis Farmers Market Rhodes College Volunteer Fair Latin Fest

Art to Grow This outreach program visits students in local schools throughout the Memphis Metro area Art to Grow offers lessons that highlight the special exhibitions and permanent collection at the museum, as well as lessons that explore the gardens and wildlife at the Dixon. This year Art to Grow saw 20,271 students from grades pre-k through 8.

Each month the instructor brings a different project featuring various art making techniques that connect to the Dixon’s art and living collections. The monthly program is free, and all materials are included. T.A.G. saw 985 teens in 2019.
