The Dixon in 2021 It was a great privilege to serve as Chair of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2021. In what could have been a year largely lost to pandemic and periodic surges of COVID variants, the Dixon remained open and more accessible than ever for its members and visitors, we resumed in-person programming and events with careful management and without incident, we celebrated the visual arts and the delights of nature with renewed vigor, and we launched significant initiatives that will serve us well for years to come. I am proud of the Dixon’s resolve in 2021 and proud of all of you for supporting it so generously. It was a year of outstanding exhibitions. We jumpstarted the calendar with America’s Impressionism: Echoes of a Revolution, which was a partnership between the Dixon, the Brandywine Museum and the San Antonio Museum of Art. In the late spring, we featured Memphis 2021, showcasing some of our talented local artists and reclaiming a project that had been lost to our 2020 closure. Next, we were part of the national tour of Wayne Thiebaud 100, a celebration of a century in a great artist’s life and a stunning group of paintings. And we ended the year with the Dixon-originated Black Artists in America: From the Great Depression to Civil Rights. This powerful project revealed the contributions of African American artists in one of the most challenging and pivotal eras in our nation’s history. What a lineup! At the same time, we continued to manage the tour of our ongoing Isabelle de Borchgrave exhibition—to Louisville and to Utica, New York. We sent our permanent collection show, Monet to Matisse to the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California. We added significant works to the Dixon’s permanent collection, and we celebrated our cherished holdings by publishing a new collection catalogue, aptly titled Dixon Gallery and Gardens: Paintings, Sculpture, Works on Paper. With the arrival of spring and the return of tulip season, we saw our first events return to in-person experiences. The Dixon Plant Sale was perhaps the first, and its great success spurred the return of Symphony in the Gardens, exhibition openings, Food Truck Fridays, Family Days, and our first-ever Dixon Beer Garden. A Pumpkin House charmed us all this fall, Art on Fire came back with a roar, and the Phoebe Cook Lecture, Holiday Open House, Christmas Fiesta, and Dixon Lights rounded out the year. In addition to all the experiences we enjoyed at the Dixon in 2021, the staff and Board of Trustees also produced a new strategic plan, our first racial equity report, and we remained admission-free for the entirety of the year. We have a clear vision of what the best possible Dixon could be, and I am very grateful to our donors, members, and visitors who support the work we do here. Thank you most sincerely.

Tour of Black Artists in America: From the Great Depression to Civil Rights with Dr. Earnestine Jenkins

Introduction At the end of each fiscal year—for us, the last day of December—the Dixon Gallery and Gardens staff begins work on a report of the institution’s activities, finances, and hopefully successes in achieving a range of strategic goals over the previous twelve months. We strive for accuracy in our evaluations. But we also try to make the narratives interesting and readable, the layouts and photography appealing, and the data presented in clear and digestible ways. To the readers of the Dixon’s Annual Report 2021, either at the time of publication or many years later, we hope this small book offers an encapsulating glimpse of the year. You will see in this report the exhibitions we originated and traveled, the publications we produced, the institutional partners we attracted, the acquisitions we made, our activity in the gardens, the impressive number of learning opportunities we created, and the events and performances we hosted. Collectively, they offer a sense of the goals we set for ourselves in 2021, and how well we performed in relation to them. I think after reading the Annual Report 2021, you will see that the Dixon is a strong institution only getting stronger and that our members and donors are the reason. We continued to generate meaningful programs and events in 2021, despite the trials of pandemic, and our audiences returned in significant number to take part in those experiences. We saw our Membership totals rebound in 2021 after a predictable decline the year before, and we were once again effective fundraisers. Just as in 2020, our many donors made sure the Dixon was adequately supported, and we again ended the fiscal year with a budget surplus. I hope you find this Annual Report 2021 interesting and useful. Please contact me if you have any questions about its contents.

VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON PROGRAMS In 2021, education programs began their transition from virtual to in-person experiences. Following safety directives and Dixon guidelines, all programs were assessed monthly and modified to allow safety and best practices. Dixon at Home experiences were still offered and may continue to be accessible in coming years. It was uplifting to see visitors of all ages back in the Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building, bringing creativity, life, and learning. Most outreach programs remained virtual but came with supplies delivered to each participating school, class, family, or child. Certain programs became flexible, as instructors created both virtual and in-person options.

OUTREACH Virtual Learning

The Dixon serves its community through a variety of outreach programs. Many organizations partner to create Dixon experiences away from the galleries and gardens and provide memorable experiences and connections to art and horticulture.

This virtual outreach program launched in September of 2020. Pre-recorded videos were available for all Art to Grow lessons and could be found on the Dixon’s YouTube channel. Lessons highlight the special exhibitions and permanent collection at the museum, as well as lessons that explore the gardens and wildlife at the Dixon. In 2021, these videos received 571 views.

Art to Grow VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON

This outreach program visits students in local schools throughout the Memphis Metro area. Art to Grow offers lessons that highlight the Dixon’s special exhibitions, permanent and living collections.

Colorcopia VIRTUAL

The program serves adult and senior groups in residential communities, libraries, and other facilities. The one-hour program is free, and all materials are included. Colorcopia operated virtually from January through April and then was paused for the remainder of 2021. During this time the program offered 33 experiences for seniors. The program is scheduled to resume in-person in January 2022.

From January through May, Art to Grow outreach staff visited students virtually and provided 5,611 learning experiences to local students. In June and July, due to a reduction of COVID-19 cases, Art to Grow instructors visited local camps, libraries, and other nonprofit organizations in person. These classes required participants to wear masks and socially distance, and the Dixon provided sanitized individual supplies for each student. Art to Grow provided 1,317 experiences during June and July of 2021.

T.A.G. (Teens.Art.Gardens.) VIRTUAL

T.A.G. serves teens age 12 to 18 in afterschool programs, libraries, and other facilities. Each month the instructor brings a different project featuring various art making techniques that connect to the Dixon's art and living collections. This program was paused through May and resumed in person programming for small groups during the summer of 2021. Through these classes, Dixon staff provided 79 teen experiences in 2021. The program was paused again during the 2021 fall semester but will provide in-person programming again in January 2022.

Beginning in September, the Dixon made the decision to return to a virtual format for its Art to Grow program. To expand the materials used and educational impact, the Dixon began offering supply kits for all schools utilizing the program. These were delivered to participating schools within a 30-mile radius of the museum. Outreach instructors then led the lessons in a live, virtual format for local schools. Art to Grow provided 7,127 experiences for students from September through December.

Total Outreach Experiences for 2021: 16,022

Combined, Art to Grow offered hands-on programming for 14,061 students in 2021.

IN THE COMMUNITY The Dixon participates in several events, offsite professional development opportunities, and festivals throughout the year. At these events, Dixon staff connects with community members by offering program and exhibition information, art making activities and free passes. The Dixon participated in virtual events, mobile festivals, and provided supply kits for community members in 2021. Through these efforts, the Dixon provided more than 1,300 experiences in the community, in 2021.

45 Years of Giving In 2021, the Dixon celebrated 45 years of displaying works of art, planting beautiful gardens, and creating experiences for all ages. In honor of this anniversary, the donors who have supported us throughout those years have been acknowledged for their generosity. Thank you for all you do at the Dixon.

Ruthie and David Bowlin

Musette and Allen Morgan

Ruthie and David (Casey) Bowlin have been involved with the Dixon since our founding. As a young insurance agent Casey wrote the first insurance policy for the Dixon back in 1976. The Bowlins are Circle Life Members and have supported exhibitions and gardens programs for years. In 2019, they funded the renovation of the Bowlin Stage, where we host Symphony in the Gardens and dozens of weddings every year. Casey was on the Dixon board in the 1990s and Ruthie currently serves.

Musette and Allen Morgan have been involved with the Dixon since our founding in 1976. The Morgans are both Circle Life and Curator’s Circle members, they have sponsored countless exhibitions over the years, and have given generously to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment. Allen has chaired both the Dixon Board of Trustees and the Hugo Dixon Foundation, and Allen and Musette are charter members of both the S. Herbert Rhea Legacy Society and the Joseph Orgill III Legacy Society.

48

Gwen and Penn Owen

Christine and Dan Richards

Gwen and Penn Owen are generous supporters and active participants in Dixon programming. They have sponsored numerous exhibitions over the last dozen years, they are Circle Life Members, and they are founding members of the Curator’s Circle. In 2019, they funded the beautiful Owen Outdoor Classroom, and they are charter members of the Joseph Orgill III Legacy Society. Both have served on the Board of Trustees and participated on numerous committees, and Penn chaired the Dixon board in 2017 and 2018.

Steadfast supporters of Dixon Education program, Chris and Dan Richards have been involved with the institution since 2007. Chris and Dan have been exhibition sponsors for more than a decade, they have joined Curator’s Circle every year since its founding in 2016, and they are quiet but generous supporters of fine art acquisitions. Chris and Dan are charter members of the Joseph Orgill III Legacy Society. Chris chaired the Dixon board in 2015 and 2016.

49

Nancy and Steve Morrow

Rose M. Johnston

Nancy and Steve Morrow have been generous friends of the Dixon since first becoming members in 1990. The Morrows have supported the Dixon through Curator’s Circle, Circle Life membership, Margaret Oates Dixon Society, and they have been impressive supporters of the Dixon exhibition program for nearly fifteen years. The Morrows are charter members of the S. Herbert Rhea Legacy Society and members of the Joseph Orgill III Legacy Society at the Dixon. Steve chaired the Dixon Board of Trustees in 2013 and 2014, and Steve and Nancy endowed the Morrow Lawn in 2019.

Dr. Rose M. Johnston has been a loyal Dixon supporter for almost 35 years. Rose and her late husband, Tom, first became members of the Dixon in 1988 and she has given generously to Dixon education and outreach programs ever since. Rose is a Circle Life member and an important donor to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment. Rose has sponsored numerous exhibitions, she has joined the Curator’s Circle every year of its existence, and she is a member of the S. Herbert Rhea Legacy Society. Rose retired from the Dixon Board of Trustees in 2020 after more than thirty years of service.

50

Brenda and Lester Crain

Nell Levy

Dixon members since 1987, Brenda and Lester Crain became Circle Life members just three years later. The Crains have supported some of the Dixon’s most ambitious programs. They were major donors to the purchase of 58 Jean-Louis Forain pastels, watercolors, and drawings in 1993, and they have supported some of our most impressive exhibitions. Brenda and Lester are major contributors to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment and are members of the S. Herbert Rhea Legacy Society. They contributed generously to the 2019 gardens construction project, funding the Crain Sculpture Circle. Their daughter, Barbara Williamson, chaired of the Dixon Board of Trustees in 2019 and 2020, bringing generational support to the Dixon.

Nell Levy and her late husband, Herbert, first joined the Dixon in 1985. Herbert was on the Dixon Board of Trustees in the 1990s and 2000s. The Levys were significant contributors to the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment, and Nell has been an important supporter of the exhibition program. Nell is a member of the Curator’s Circle, she has given generously to Art to Grow, our mobile outreach program, and she has been a Circle Life member for 30 years. Nell is also a member of the Joseph Orgill III Legacy Society, and is a great friend to the Dixon.
