Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper
The Dixon in 2017 It was my pleasure to serve the Dixon Gallery and Gardens as Chair of the Board of Trustees in 2017. I have been involved at the Dixon for many years, and part of the Board for over a decade. But my present role has afforded me a closer view of this marvelous institution, and I like what I see very much. I am pleased to report that the Dixon had another outstanding year in 2017. We continue to be one of the most productive small art museums in the country in terms of the exhibitions we originate, publish, and circulate. We organized three major shows in 2017, two of which were international in scope, including the popular Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper. In the gardens, we showcased another spectacular display of tulips last spring, the gardens component of our Scent and Symbolism exhibition was delightful, and we offered more hands-on workshops, talks, and lectures than ever before. Our Education Department again created enriching opportunities to experience the Dixon through Family Days, our outreach, spring and summer camps, an array of programs, and tours for school groups, seniors, and everyone in between. Our unique special events, such as Art on Tap, Art on Fire, Wine Down at the Dixon, and Food Truck Fridays continue to bring new visitors to the Dixon. I am pleased to report that these exhibitions, programs, and events, and many more, helped us reach over 100,000 visitors for the second year in a row. In a year filled with highlights, we are proudest of an extraordinary contribution to the Dixon in 2017 made by a very generous couple. Susan and John Horseman, our good friends from St. Louis, made a gift to the Dixon of 29 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper mostly by American artists. The Horsemans’ support of the Dixon has been generous and meaningful since 2008, but this latest donation is historic in its importance. It will be counted as one of the most significant acts of collection building in our history. On behalf of the Dixon Board of Trustees, I am pleased to offer Susan and John Horseman our deepest and most sincere thanks. Our members and donors make so many good things possible at the Dixon, and I will close this letter with my sincerest thanks to them. We are grateful for all that you do.

Dixon Art Camp at the University of Memphis
Introduction At the end of each fiscal year—for us, the last day of December—the Dixon Gallery and Gardens staff begins work on a report of the institution’s activities, finances, and successes in achieving a range of strategic goals over the previous twelve months. We strive for accuracy in our evaluations. But we also hope that the narratives are readable, the layouts and photography are appealing, and the data is presented in compelling ways. To the readers of the Dixon’s 2017 Annual Report, either at the time of publication or many years later, we hope this small book offers an encapsulating glimpse of the past year. You will see in this report the exhibitions we originated and traveled, the publications we produced, the institutional partners we attracted, the acquisitions we made, our activity in the gardens, the impressive number of learning opportunities we created, and the events and performances we hosted. Collectively, they offer a sense of the goals we set for ourselves in 2017, and how well we performed in relation to them. After reading the Dixon’s 2017 Annual Report, I hope you will see that the Dixon is tracking positively in every objective area of measure. We were effective fundraisers in 2017, generating more revenue for the operating budget than we ever have before. For the second year in a row, we reached our attendance and outreach goals. And we counted more Dixon members and produced more membership revenue than at any time in the last twenty years. We have again ended a fiscal year with a balanced budget, which is a tribute to the resourcefulness of our staff and trustee fundraisers, our ability to generate earned income, and the generous members and donors who support the Dixon. I hope you find this 2017 Annual Report interesting and useful. Please contact me if you have any questions about its contents. Kevin Sharp Linda W. and S. Herbert Rhea Director Dixon Gallery and Gardens

THE SUSAN AND JOHN HORSEMAN GIFT TO THE DIXON Susan and John Horseman, from St. Louis, Missouri, have been collecting American art for more than twenty years. Works from their collection have appeared in dozens of museum exhibitions in both the United States and Europe, including three memorable shows at the Dixon: Regional Dialect, Modern Dialect, and Augusta Savage’s Gamin. They both have served on art museum boards and committees in St. Louis and elsewhere. John Horseman has been a member of the Dixon Board of Trustees for almost seven years. In 2017, the Horsemans proposed a contribution of twenty-nine mostly American paintings, sculptures, and works on paper to the Dixon, which the museum enthusiastically accepted. Dixon Board Chair Penn Owen noted, “The Horseman gift stands among the most important and impressive acts of generosity and collection building in our history.” The Horsemans’ contribution doubles the number of works by American artists in the Dixon collection, and it quadruples our representation of works of art by women painters and sculptors. The Horseman gift allows the Dixon to tell a more complete story of the art of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These works of American art dovetail perfectly with our existing collection and speak to many of the same themes that artists were exploring in Europe. We look forward to the many ways in which the works in the Horseman gift will impact the visitor experience at the Dixon. On February 8, 2018, the Dixon hosted a special event in the Horsemans' honor. The guest list included Mayor Jim Strickland and members of the Dixon's Curator's Circle. The following day, John and Susan Horseman visited Graceland.

OUTREACH The Dixon serves its community through a variety of outreach programs. Many organizations partner with us to create Dixon experiences away from the galleries and gardens. Colorcopia This outreach program serves senior groups in residential communities, libraries, and other facilities. The one-hour program is free, and all materials are included. The Dixon’s partnership with the Memphis Public Library brings Colorcopia to four branches per month. Art to Grow This outreach program visits students in local schools throughout the Memphis metro area. Art to Grow offers lessons that highlight special exhibitions and permanent collection at the museum and explore the gardens and wildlife at the Dixon. This year, Art to Grow saw students from pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade and added a new after school program for teenagers (ages 13 - 18), reaching a total of 21,064 students in 2017. Additionally, Art to Grow participated in many events and festivals in the community, connecting with an additional 2,735 community members. In total, Art to Grow saw 23,799 participants in 2017.
