The Dixon in 2020 To serve as Chair of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2020 was both an honor and an utterly humbling experience. From the moment COVID-19 arrived in Memphis, to the dreadful but necessary closing of the Dixon last March, to the struggle to get back open and stay open, I understand better than ever why so many in our community consider this institution vital to life in Memphis. It absolutely is. At no point during the pandemic has the Dixon Gallery and Gardens considered itself non-essential. We understood from the moment the Dixon closed on March 23, 2020, that we needed to reopen as soon as we possibly could. To that goal, we began planning for the safe return of our staff, our members and visitors, and devising the protocols and procedures that would mitigate risk as we resumed our duties. By early May, some of our staff was gradually returning. The second week of June, we reopened the gardens to the membership and then to our visitors the following week. On July 19, we opened the museum and the For America exhibition on the very day it was originally scheduled to start. In essence, the pandemic claimed one exhibition slot, a slender twelve-week window, but we regretted the loss of those few weeks all the same. With little or no warning last March, most of the Dixon staff was asked to work from home. Suddenly, we were renewing memberships, communicating with our audience, designing and assembling The Leaf, cultivating donors, writing our collection catalogue, and developing and implementing education programs from our own kitchen tables. That hard working group turned on a dime and effectively translated nearly all of our offerings—whether educational experiences or special events—into digital versions of themselves. Many staff continue to work from home as I write, they remain highly effective, and most importantly, they remain Dixon employees. Not everyone’s job translated so seamlessly to working from home. We have a responsibility to care for the Dixon itself, the institution so many of you have supported for so long. We made the decision early on to retain our security officers, who are contracted but very dedicated. We saw LuShawn Jones, Charlene Williams, Marlin Burnwatt, Antonio Washington, Tim Bogans, LaArie King, Hope Jones, and Angela Robinson every day. Juliana Bjorklund, Director of Operations, never stopped coming to work and made certain the facility was running soundly. Gail Hopper was here, managing our finances with microscopic austerity. Robert Jones, our longest tenured employee, was specifically asked to stay home, but would not be turned away. And Dale Skaggs looked after the gardens by himself for more than a month. To those staff who summoned the resolve to keep coming back to the Dixon day after day, I thank you very sincerely. In closing, I offer my gratitude to the Dixon Board of Trustees for their unwavering support during a nearly impossible year, and I extend an equal measure of thanks to you, the generous donors and members of the Dixon. You were essential too.

Augusta Savage: Rennaissance Woman (February 2020)

Looking Forward at the Dixon There have never been more charged and turbulent times for our consideration than the times in which we find ourselves. Yet in these troubled times, our gallery and gardens remain an oasis of beauty and serenity. And given the institution’s outstanding performance in 2020 under the leadership of Barbara C. Williamson, I can safely say our prospects in the coming years are more than bright. For the last two years, I have served not only as President of the Dixon Board of Trustees, but I also performed the duties of Treasurer for much of that period (I have since been replaced by Vernon Stafford). Especially in the latter role, I received a close-up view of the Dixon’s organizational strength, our nimbleness in reducing expenses when the pandemic put us under extreme financial pressure, our wholehearted embrace of a team ethos in bad times as well as good, and the willingness of our generous support base to invest in an organization of such substance. Under these circumstances, I believe you will agree that my optimism about the future of the Dixon is well founded. We tabled some projects in 2020 out of caution for what the pandemic might bring and to preserve resources. But we accomplished far more than we deferred last year, and we will bring even more value to our members and visitors in 2021. Experiences that were lost to the pandemic, such as the amazing tulips in the spring, will again be here in beautiful abundance. Hands-on and in-person education programs that out of necessity went virtual in 2020 will slowly and carefully return to the Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building in the coming months. And special events that transitioned to Zoom will be even more special for your participation. We have a great deal of work to do in 2021. Our Diversity Committee continues to reshape the Dixon into a more inclusive place for all who wish to help govern the institution, work for its success, and experience its beauty. This year we will overhaul our website, author the next iteration of our strategic plan, and build new and brighter pathways to alternative revenue streams. Meanwhile, we will continue to organize powerful exhibitions that will appear not only at the Dixon but also at venues across the country, and we will care for and grow the impressive collections that are a fundamental part of our identity and strength. It is true that “leaders shine in perilous waters.” Barbara Williamson is one such leader, and I am grateful to Barbara for her inspired leadership during the last two years, as well as to all the capable people who have led the Dixon as Board Chairs throughout our history. We are building on their strong foundation, and we owe them not only our thanks, but also our very best efforts going forward. On behalf of the entire Dixon family, I thank you for your encouragement, inspiration, and steadfast support.

J. Kenneth (Chip) Marston, Jr. Chair

Summer in the Dixon Gardens

Introduction At the end of each fiscal year—for us, the last day of December—the Dixon Gallery and Gardens staff begins work on a report of the institution’s activities, finances, and successes in achieving a range of strategic goals over the previous twelve months. We strive for accuracy in our evaluations, but we also try to make the narratives interesting and readable, the layouts and photography appealing, and the data relevant and digestible. To the readers of the Dixon’s Annual Report 2020, either at the time of publication or many years later, we hope this small book offers an encapsulating glimpse of the year. In this instance, it was a year like no other. You will see in this report the exhibitions we originated, the publications we produced, the institutional partners we attracted, the acquisitions we made, our activity in the gardens, the impressive number of learning opportunities we created, and the events and performances we hosted in person and via a strange new (to me, anyway) thing called Zoom. Hopefully, this publication offers a sense of the goals we set for ourselves in 2020, how effective we were in achieving them, and how successfully we adapted to a deadly pandemic and its unimaginable dangers. I think after reading the Annual Report 2020, you will see that the Dixon is a strong institution only getting stronger and that our members and donors are unquestionably the reason for it. We continued to generate a significant number of programs, events and special experiences in 2020, this despite the challenges of the pandemic. We saw some not unexpected decline in our membership totals in 2020, but we were once again highly effective fundraisers—especially for the operating budget and fine art acquisitions. I am pleased to report that we ended the fiscal year with a balanced budget—thanks to a generous supplemental grant from the Hugo Dixon Foundation, a Small Business Administration forgivable loan, and our extraordinary donor base. It was a challenging, frightening, exhausting year at the Dixon, and like most businesses, institutions, and people, we were more than happy to see 2020 in our rearview mirror. But the hardest of times often reveal the strongest of leaders and in our 2020 Board Chair, Barbara C. Williamson, the Dixon had both a courageous ally and a stalwart friend. She was with us every step of the way, and on behalf of the Dixon staff, I offer her our deepest and most heartfelt thanks. I hope you find this Annual Report 2020 interesting and useful. Please contact me if you have any questions about its contents.

Memphis is overflowing with dynamic, influential, and groundbreaking women in the arts. The event organized by Dixon Gallery and Gardens and Theatre Memphis brings them together for a weekend of performances, demonstrations, and dialogues ranging from personal stories to championing gender equity. VIRTUAL LEARNING PROGRAMS In March 2020, most education programs shifted from in-person to virtual. In order to provide accessible, engaging, and meaningful experiences for all ages, the Dixon created its Virtual Learning Programs strategy. Ongoing, special, student, educator and partnership programs were offered virtually, and most were offered at no cost. New Virtual Learning Child and Adult Safety Protection Policies were created, as well as Behavior Guidelines to deliver safe and engaging experiences during the virtual sessions. Content was produced to reach people at any distance through virtual platforms and the Dixon’s website. Dixon at Home provided art and horticulture activities, lectures, talks, tours, challenges, performances for kids, families and adults. Programs that weren’t able to transition to virtual platforms were either paused, modified, or cancelled. This section reflects in-person programs from January to the middle of March. From March to December programs took place virtually unless noted.

OUTREACH Community Virtual Outreach

The Dixon serves its community through a variety of outreach programs. Many organizations partner to create Dixon experiences away from the galleries and gardens.

From May through August, outreach staff created recorded art projects for local camps, libraries, and daycares in addition to leading live sessions. Through these efforts, Dixon outreach staff connected with 233 students through live classes and 984 viewers through recorded lessons for a total of 1,217 outreach experiences.

Adopt-a-School Since 2007, through the Shelby County Schools’ Adopt-a-School program, the Dixon adopted the neighborhood school Willow Oaks Elementary. Since then, outreach instructors provide art lessons to all their pre-k and kindergarten classes. Instructors visited Willow Oaks students in January, February, and March of 2020 and saw 150 students.

Student Virtual Learning This virtual outreach program launched in September of 2020. Virtual visits were offered live and pre-recorded for students in local schools throughout the Memphis Metro area. Lessons highlight the special exhibitions and permanent collection at the museum, as well as lessons that explore the gardens and wildlife at the Dixon. In 2020 Dixon staff saw 4,354 pre-k through 8th grade students in live sessions and had 1,934 views from pre-recorded activities for a total of 6,298 virtual learning experiences.

In 2015, Sharpe Elementary was added as a second adopted school. Instructors visit each school year to see all Sharpe students. In the Spring of 2020, Sharpe students utilized virtual resources provided by education, and outreach instructors visited all students virtually in November. In addition to visits, Willow Oaks and Sharpe Elementary students and families are given free admission to the museum and gardens.

Colorcopia

Art to Grow

This program serves adult and senior groups in residential communities, libraries and other facilities. The one-hour program is free, and all materials are included. Colorcopia was implemented in person through March of 2020 and transitioned to virtual during the fall of 2020. Colorcopia saw 86 adults in 2020.

This outreach program visits students in local schools throughout the Memphis Metro area. Art to Grow offers lessons that highlight the special exhibitions and permanent collection at the museum, as well as lessons that explore the gardens and wildlife at the Dixon. From January through March, these sessions were in person. Beginning in April, education staff transitioned to a virtual learning format. This year, Art to Grow saw 5,284 students from grades pre-k through 8.

T.A.G. (Teens.Art.Gardens.) PAUSED DUE TO COVID-19

This program serves teens age 12 to 18 in afterschool programs, libraries, and other facilities. Each month the instructor brings a different project featuring various art making techniques that connect to the Dixon’s art and living collections. The monthly program is free, and all materials are included. T.A.G. saw students in person from January through March and cancelled all programs for the remainder of 2020. T.A.G. saw 191 teens in 2020.

Art to Grow celebrated its 20th Birthday in January. The program was created in 2000 by former Curator of Education, Jane Faquin. Her vision of providing free art experiences for students in the Memphis area is still alive and continues to bloom. During the past twenty years, Art to Grow has been implemented by a myriad of talented and committed art instructors and has provided over 250,000 learning experiences for pre-kindergarten to 8th grade students. Art to Grow continues to visit schools, community centers, libraries, and other educational spaces to bring a love of art and horticulture to children of all ages.

SOCIAL MEDIA ENGAGEMENT The Dixon began collecting engagement data on March 23. Social media played a crucial role in staying connected with our audience while sheltering in place due to COVID-19. In addition to collecting data on engagement, we increased the Dixon's YouTube content by including all video tours, activities and recorded events, which as a result, increased views and subscribers to the Dixon channel. Engagement includes likes, comments, and shares for each platform. Prior to 2020, only new followers were recorded and YouTube was not counted.
