In the Garden, an exhibition of photography organized by the George Eastman Museum

The Dixon in 2018 It was my sincere pleasure to serve as Chair of the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2017 and 2018. I considered it an honor to guide an institution so valued by its community, so ambitious in its service, and so well supported by its many friends. I am pleased to report that the Dixon Gallery and Gardens had an outstanding 2018. In a year of notable accomplishments, unquestionably the most noteworthy was launching the first expansion of our museum facility since 1985. We broke ground on the new Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building in May, and before the year was out a beautiful 6,000 square foot Neo-Georgian structure extended to the east of the existing museum. We are deeply grateful to the Farnsworths for funding this project in its entirety. As Liz and Tommy are very aware, their investment in the Dixon is in fact a gift to the entire community. The Dixon also launched two major capital projects in the gardens in 2018. With the generous support of the Plough Foundation, the Assisi Foundation of Memphis, the Canale Foundation, the Nancy and Steve Morrow Family, Suzanne and Neely Mallory, Jr., the estate of Gayle and Jacques Schuler, the estate of Jean Lewis Coors and Thomas Price, and Mary Alice Quinn, we are transforming an acre of uncultivated landscape into beautiful, inspiring, and accessible gardens. Before the year ended, we also launched a major renovation of our stage area. Thanks to a generous contribution from Ruthie and Casey Bowlin, this historically critical and much used area will be as beautiful and functional as it deserves. These two projects represent the most important gardens construction we have undertaken in more than two decades. In 2018, the Dixon presented another strong slate of exhibitions, most notably our own The Real Beauty: The Artistic World of Eugenia Errรกzuriz. We also oversaw the tour of our Isabelle de Borchgrave show, sent our permanent collection to the Telfair Museum in Savannah, Georgia, and reached our fiftieth exhibition in the Mallory and Wurtzburger series. The Dixon staged another spectacular display of tulips, another breathtaking Memphis Flower Show, four more free Dixon Family Days, Food Truck Fridays, Spring to Art Camp, Symphony in the Gardens, even more outreach into the community, free Dixon Summer Camp for neighborhood children, fifty Munch and Learns, Art on the Rocks, Art on Fire, the Phoebe Cook Lecture, and dozens of other programs and events throughout the year. I offer my deepest thanks to the dedicated Dixon staff and Board of Trustees for making my time as Chair so meaningful. I extend an equal measure of thanks to you, the generous donors and members, who make so many good things possible at the Dixon. I am very grateful.

C. Penn Owen III Chair Emeritus

Groundbreaking for the Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building

The Future of the Dixon The Dixon Gallery and Gardens has just experienced the most extraordinary two-year interval in the institution’s history. We have seen the Dixon largely transformed by three major capital projects—the Liz and Tommy Farnsworth Education Building, the learning gardens that will surround that new facility, and the Bowlin Stage renovation. What’s more, all three projects are either fully funded or very close to it. We of course have our exceptionally generous donors to thank, but there is no question that the brilliance of the Dixon’s performance in 2017 and 2018 is also due to the leadership of our Board Chair, C. Penn Owen III. I know I speak for all of the Dixon Board of Trustees when I say how grateful I am for Penn’s dedication and hard work during his tenure as Chair. I would be remiss if I did not also extend my thanks to Kevin Sharp and the Dixon staff. Just as they continued to produce a full calendar of programs and events while the museum facility was under renovation in 2015, they have maintained equal energy and productivity during the 2017 planning phase and the 2018 construction of our capital projects. Their focus and commitment is extraordinary. And now, with more space, greater accessibility, and new resources at their disposal, I can only imagine the great things the Dixon team will accomplish in the years to come. The beautiful new gardens and the new education building create opportunities for the Dixon, but they also will require greater support. I hope to use my time as Chair of the Dixon Board of Trustees to help deliver an even more sustainable institution. I know we can further grow the membership, broaden the donor base, increase the audience, and make the Dixon a valued part of every Memphian’s life. But I will need your help to do it. I am honored to Chair the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Board of Trustees in 2019 and 2020, and I look forward to working with you. Thank you.

Barbara C. Williamson Chair

Dixon Dialect: The Susan and John Horseman Gift

Introduction At the end of each fiscal year—for us, the last day of December—the Dixon Gallery and Gardens staff begins work on a report of the institution’s activities, finances, and successes in achieving a range of strategic goals over the previous twelve months. We strive for accuracy in our evaluations. But we also hope that the narratives are readable, the layouts and photography are appealing, and the data is presented in interesting ways. To the readers of the Dixon’s 2018 Annual Report, either at the time of publication or many years later, we hope this small book offers an encapsulating glimpse of the year. You will see in this report the exhibitions we originated and traveled, the publications we produced, the institutional and community partners we attracted, the acquisitions we made, our activity in the gardens, the impressive number of learning opportunities we created, and the events and performances we hosted. Collectively, they offer a sense of the goals we set for ourselves in 2018, and how well we performed in relation to them. After reading the Dixon’s 2018 Annual Report, you will see that the Dixon is a strong and healthy institution. We continued to generate more programs than ever before and clearly our audience values the experiences we produce. We saw growth in our Membership totals in 2018, and we were once again effective fundraisers—especially for our capital projects and for the Dixon Gallery and Gardens Endowment Fund. But for the first time since the financial crisis, our fundraising for the operating budget fell short of our goals, and we did not end the fiscal year with a balanced budget. That shortfall is very disappointing to us, and we do not intend to repeat it. I hope you find this 2018 Annual Report interesting and useful. Please contact me if you have any questions about its contents. Thank you for your generous support of the Dixon.

MILESTONES The Dixon Collects: Amaryllis Exhibition showcased the Dixon's extensive collection of Hippeastrum. Dixon Blooms: A Celebration of Spring featured tulips, hyacinth, crocus, daffodils, and galanthus. The Dixon welcomed 8,226 visitors in one month to see the blooms. The Dixon's dedicated garden volunteers logged 2,878 hours. The Dixon Tree Team, comprised of local professionals and enthusiastic amateurs, are accessing the health and well-being of all the trees at the Dixon. They will also make recommendations for management of our canopy in light of the Dixon’s values of preservation and safety. Garden staff and volunteers spend hundreds of hours each year planting, growing, cutting, and arranging flowers and foliage to adorn the galleries and brighten our special events. This year we made that connection clearer for visitors by placing labels describing the floral arrangements that list the genus, species, common name, and where on the property the plant materials were grown. These labels create teachable moments. As Dixon visitors enjoy the beauty of the arrangements, the labels emphasize the connection between the two aspects of our mission. In 2018, the Dixon launched its most ambitious gardens construction project to date. Dixon staff conceptualized, designed, produced construction documents, and oversaw the building of over 65,000 square feet of new garden spaces. Additionally, the Dixon's largest parking lot was reconceived and resurfaced, and the sidewalks and pathways in our new gardens were designed for maximum accessibility. All the while, we maintained the look and feel of our traditional Georgian architecture. All conceptual renderings used for fundraising were also produced in-house. The Dixon Garden Fair, one of the Dixon's largest volunteer efforts, was re-imagined and reinvented in 2018. This plant sale provides Dixon members and visitors with access to hard to find and rare plants, as well as time-tested performers for Mid-South gardens. The new and improved Dixon Garden Fair will take place in April 2019.

OUTREACH The Dixon serves its community through a variety of outreach programs. Many organizations partner to create Dixon experiences away from the galleries and gardens. Adopt-a-School Through the Shelby County Schools’ Adopt-a-School program in 2007, the Dixon adopted the neighborhood school Willow Oaks Elementary. Since then, Dixon outreach instructors provide art lessons to all pre-k and kindergarten classes, approximately 150 students monthly. In 2015, Sharpe Elementary was added as a second adopted school. Dixon instructors visit twice each school year to see all Sharpe students. In addition to outreach visits, students are invited back to the Dixon to explore the galleries and gardens and complement their art lessons. The Dixon provides bus funding for these visits. Art to Grow This outreach program visits students in local schools throughout the Memphis Metro area. Art to Grow offers lessons that highlight the special exhibitions and permanent collection at the museum, as well as lessons that explore the gardens and wildlife at the Dixon. This year, Art to Grow saw 21,121 students from grades pre-k through 8. Colorcopia This outreach program serves adult and senior groups in residential communities, libraries, and other facilities. This one hour program is free and all materials are included. Colorcopia saw 486 adults in 2018. T.A.G. (Teens.Art.Gardens.) This program serves teens ages 12 to 18 in afterschool programs, libraries, and other facilities. Each month, a Dixon instructor brings a different project teaching various art making techniques and connecting to the Dixon’s art and living collections. The T.A.G. program is free, and all materials are included. T.A.G. saw 1,393 teens in 2018.
