Foreword This Debut carries within it the selected work of our graduates, compiled for the fourth Graduation Day ceremony of D J Academy of Design. On the occasion of the graduates’ first step into the world, it showcases the wide variety of design projects undertaken by the budding designers for various industries and design studios. D J Academy of Design, which started rather humbly with eight students, has grown in the past eleven years. Our vision has always been to give globally comparable design education that is locally accessible to all people. The student intake had been deliberately kept small, so that we can impart a more personalized education and ensure a wwork culture conducive to creative learning. We aspire to compensate in quality for the quantity. At DJAD, we train students for an all-round growth as individuals, rather than mere career preparation for job seekers. The learning here makes them develop their full creative potential and become suitable not only to work for various industries or for design studios but also to set up their own organizations as design entrepreneurs. In a fragmented society, which is a result of over specialization, we have opted for a somewhat generalized education, which makes the young students as mature and flexible professionals, who can handle with ease the different areas of design, adapt to the fast changing technologies and be able to work seamlessly in the multi-disciplinary teams. As Dean of this young and unique institution, I have immense pleasure to place on record my appreciation to various industries, design studios and business houses who have lent their support in our effort by way of sponsoring projects, offering internships and opening their premises and hearts to our students. I am grateful to the designers and other professionals who, as visiting faculty, shared their field knowledge and precious time with our students. This publication carries with it the blessings and good wishes of mine, all my faculty colleagues and the management, to all the graduates for their future endeavors. Prof. S. Balaram Dean, D J Academy of Design, Coimbatore

The book Xadhukothar Kuki (Xahukothar meansStorytelling and Kuki –a small pouch, where you keep your precious collective items.) is a graphic narrative comprising of four unique and peculiar stories of true events that took place at different places and at different times in Assam. Sequential art offers tremendous possibilities to writers and artists: faithfulness, control, a chance to be heard far and wide without fear of compromise. I chose this medium for my project for the very reason of its versatility with all the potential imagery of film and painting along with the intimacy of written words and all that’s needed is the desire to be heard, the will to learn and the ability to see.

Type Design
My diploma project was to work on a multi lingual font family. Members of this family would include Telugu and Kannada (both South Indian scripts) along with a Latin counterpart. I started working with Classic Telugu typeface as it’s my mother-tongue. As I progressed with my research, I realised that the classic form of Telugu has always had rounded ends. This drove me to explore more along this direction. Then I started working on the Latin Typeface which has the looks of a Slab-Serif with soft terminals. The Latin letters are constructed on the basis of vertical contrast. The Latin Typeface is also a text typeface, but the bold weight could be used for Editorial purposes and also for Packaging Design. The typeface is named as Deccan.

As part of the project I designed Environmental Graphics for Amazon India, for their office located in Hyderabad. Since the theme of ‘Music’ had been adapted in their earlier designs, the same was continued in their newly constructed area. The suggested themes were Latin American and Trance music. For the concept of Latino music, I incorporated the visual flavors of both Spain and Mexico, taking cues from various elements significant in their music, dance and culture. For Trance, I was inspired by the theories of Generative Art, Psychedelic art and Nonsensical literature. Therefore the aim was to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality, creating illogical scenes with photographic precision, creating strange creatures and ‘dreamscapes’ from everyday objects that allowed the unconscious to express itself.

The journey of making Njangalum was adventurous, especially because it was my first short film. The main character in the film was inspired from the short story ‘Ente Kalippaattangal’ by Paul Zacharia. The film is set in an apartment building where stories were made about a new resident who is unsocial and often not seen outside. Few of the residents even say that he must be a terrorist. Two kids try to find his secret. References were taken from Tagore’s ‘Kabuliwala’ in refining the characters. The story is a reflection of the judgemental society we live in. First draft of the script went through several refinements to take up the final form and then in to a storyboard. The film was shot completely based on the storyboard.

High importance is placed on education in India. School enrolment rates are rising; however, the quality of education is still a challenge. As access to education increases, so has access to mobile phones. Using this prevalence of mobile technology as a leverage point, Worldreader’s Mobile Reading to Children program aims to encourage parents and caregivers to read to and with their children. The long-term goal of the program is to promote early reading through mobile phones, thus increasing school readiness and therefore literacy rates. This project was a formative study completed in Delhi to test the initial assumptions about lifestyle behaviours, literacy levels, mobile phone usage, and attitudes toward reading among parents, caregivers, and teachers of children between the ages of 0 to 6 years and to give design recommendations for their existing application. As a self-initiative I re-designed the application keeping in mind the data analysed through the research.

Delhi is crucial to the history of India. Such a city with Vast history needs it’s story to be told and heard in a more interesting manner. How can one rediscover his/her city through history? The project started off with two words, Mobile Cooking. Starting from scratch, I had to take to research and decide the market and the target audience. After a lot of travelling and trekking, I decided to club truck drivers, group treks and religious pilgrimages as the audience. The market already had solutions for individuals and small groups but the implements used for larger groups were crude and unsafe. LPG, in comparison to other fuels is the safest option and the solution was to integrate the stove body to the gas cylinder. This serves as a compact unit that is easy to carry and can fit in confined spaces.

The idea was to see how the stereotypical seating in the living room can be worked out using other materials without compromising on the comfort or aesthetic. The challenge with living rooms in Mumbai is that the spaces are quite small. The furniture, therefore, needs to adapt to the various activities that happen in the living room. The final solution called The fresh seater is one that provides flexibility in terms of using the seating. Mumbai has one of the most extensive and dense network of buses with thousands of bus shelters within the city. It accommodates over 4 million daily commuters that depend on the bus service and interact with the bus shelters, the current design fails to cater to such a massive population. The Bus shelter project was an initiative by the IIT Bombay along with the HRD Ministry to improve the public transport scenario in Mumbai by making the bus shelters more efficient. Bus shelters are embedded into the system and are part of a larger environment. This concept is based on a modular structure that collects rain water to be later utilized for the toilets that are part of the same system. Care has been taken to ensure the usability of the space and benefit of the large population that utilises the bus service. It is also a strong representation of the city and capable of withstanding any possible circumstances that might affect its efficient functioning.

Filter coffee is a favourite daily beverage consumed by most South Indians. It involves well planned preparatory process to enjoy a wonderful coffee. Freshly ground coffee seeds ensures a good flavour. At the end of the seemingly painful tasks such as grinding, sieving, brewing and mixing it is always worth it. However there is no filter coffee maker that is automatic and that which gives the authentic filter coffee taste, without the burden of the work and preparation involved in. That gives us a scope to enter the Premium household market with an automatic coffee maker which is Effective and Efficient, Lightweight and Compact, easy to maintain, user friendly interface and keeping to the style trends of today’s homes. The product grinds the coffee seeds required for the moment, which then gets added to the hot water which starts the brewing process. The ratios of the seeds to the water to the milk are all presets and helps in minimizing the brewing errors. The visual design caters to the status and style statement of the premium users.
