WELCOME from The Dean

My firm belief is that every student whoever joins DJAD is a gem to be discovered. We make sincere effort towards that discovery. I don’t believe in teaching. I believe in making the student learn. I don’t believe in pouring knowledge and skills into a student. I believe in drawing out the best in every student. I don’t believe in walled class rooms. I believe the world is our class room - the people, the plants, the objects everywhere. I don’t believe in textbooks. I believe the whole library is our text book. I don’t believe in “end of the course” evaluations. I believe in continuous evaluation of the student and the teacher by each other and by self. I don’t believe in rigid structures and overregulation. I believe in freedom and flexibility in learning with self discipline. I don’t expect my students to do the proper things always. I believe in encouraging them to make mistakes, to experiment, to explore unbeaten paths.

For after all, Design is thinking different.

Prof. S Balaram Dean

The VISION

Our vision is to be a globally competitive design school second to none in the world. Our mission is to offer quality design education which is relevant to the society, thoroughly professional and affordable.

DJAD commenced in 2004 to a felt need in the country. The potential for offering design services within India and abroad expanded as India matured as an economic power. But there was a shortage for trained designers within the country. DJAD’s inception was to cater to this need in a small yet significant way.

Collaborations

D J Academy of Design belongs to the illustrious GKD Charity Trust, set up in 1983 by the industrialist par excellence, (Late) Cavalier Dr. G.K.Devarajulu. His pioneering efforts saw the emergence of Coimbatore on the global industrial map and the LMW Group as a major force to reckon with. The Group now comprises a staggering 20 companies with LMW being the flagship brand.

Other affiliations include, • ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design): Member • AID (Association of Indian Designers): Member • IDEA (Indian Design Education Alliance) 2010: Lead Member

The idea to start a Design institute under the GKD Charity Trust was born under the aegis of Mr. Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu and PAR Kumar who visited NID, Ahmadabad. After having studied the facilities and observed the culture of design learning, the team held talks with the NID Executive Director for future collaboration.

DJAD started with a joint certification programme with National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. DJAD is also a founder member of the Indian Design Institutes Alliance [IDIAI which has formed NEED (National Entrance Examination in Design)].

DJAD has an academic collaboration with the prestigious Northumbria University, UK. • Joint Degree Programme with Scholarship. DJAD Undergraduate students can opt to complete the 4th year at Northumbria University. • For Masters with Scholarship. DJAD Students who wish to pursue Postgraduation after UG can choose relevant discipline at Northumbria University.

EVALUATION SYSTEM DJAD follows a jury system that evaluates the professional growth of a student on a continuous basis. This mandatory exercise at the end of every semester also prepares them for the competitive professional environment the student has to face in the future.

Teachers’ Report Constant review of individual student’s progress takes place without comparing his/her work to anyone else’s. This encourages self-improvement. Each student’s performance is evaluated by the course teacher as an evaluation report which is written in the form of qualitative remarks and grades or marks.

Semester-End Jury At the end of every semester, an Open Jury consisting of a group of faculty members, reviews the work done by each student in that term. This jury focuses on the overall academic progress and learning attitude of the student. Final grade is given by combining class and jury grades.

Self Evaluation Self evaluation by the student is very important in developing student’s criticality and reflection which are essential for the growth and self improvement. In self evaluation, the student would reflect on his work and comment sincerely how good or bad is his/her level in comparison to own past as well as the standards set by the academy.

Diploma Jury Diploma project is the final project which is the culmination of the student’s learning. It is usually sponsored by a corporation or studio. When the student completes his/her diploma project to the satisfaction of the faculty guide and submits the report. It is examined by a jury consisting of the chairman, senior faculty as internal examiner and an external examiner of repute, drawn from a profession related to the subject. The DJAD diploma is awarded on the recommendation of the diploma jury.
