DEBUT 2018
FOREWORD This Debut carries within it the selected work of our graduates, compiled for the sixth Graduation Day ceremony of D J Academy of Design. On the occasion of the graduates’ first step into the world, it showcases the wide variety of design projects undertaken by the budding designers for various industries and design studios. D J Academy of Design, which started rather humbly with eight students, has grown in the past thirteen years. Our vision has always been to give globally comparable design education that is locally accessible to all people. The student intake had been deliberately kept small, so that we can impart a more personalized education and ensure a work culture conducive to creative learning. We aspire to give priority to quality even if it meant less quantity. At the Academy, we train students for an all-round growth as individuals, rather than mere career preparation for job seekers. The learning here makes them develop their full creative potential and become suitable not only to work for various industries or for design studios but also to set up their own organizations as design entrepreneurs. In a fragmented society, which is a result of over specialization, we have opted for a somewhat generalized education, which makes the young students as mature and flexible professionals, who can handle with ease the different areas of design, adapt to the fast changing technologies and be able to work seamlessly in the multi-disciplinary teams. As Dean of this young and unique institution, I have immense pleasure to place on record my appreciation to various industries, design studios and business houses who have lent their support in our effort by way of sponsoring projects, offering internships and opening their premises and hearts to our students. I am grateful to the designers and other professionals who, as visiting faculty, shared their field knowledge and precious time with our students. This publication carries with it the blessings and good wishes of mine, all my faculty colleagues and the management, to all the graduates for their future endeavors.

The typeface is based on Gauthier designed by Jérémie Hornus and Alisa Nowak made at Font You. It has strong calligraphy strokes which speak the language of old-style serif typefaces. Its formal tone works well for publications and editorial content. With its clean contrast, large counters and high legibility, Gauthier Devanagari is a great option to set text in Latin and Devanagari scripts. For the graduation project, I worked on the bold weight. The typeface would come in three weights Regular, Medium and Bold.

The assignment was to choose an existing product with technical complexities. I chose a stove and the problems spotted were the aesthetics of the stove, its closed front face and use of stainless steel more than required. My intervention in the form of the stove solved these problems by making it aesthetically pleasing, helping the user put their hand under the stove for cleaning and using lesser material due to its minimal form.
The products selected for this course were earring and a neck- piece. The attribute selected for designing the forms was bond. The colour palette for the forms included cobalt blue, white and gold. The jewellery pieces had a golden wire woven around their forms to show the bond. The neckpiece was taken as close as possible to the neck to signify its bond with the user.

DIPLOMA PROJECT Universal Design Client: Windglaze Studio Pottery, Auroville & Roopam Ceramic Studio, Chennai Guide: Kanaka Ananth Ceramics is a type of material that is commonly used to make tableware (bowls, mugs, platters etc.), accessories (Jewellery etc. ) and planters but are also used in electronics, abrasives and refractories. When it comes to tableware, the most commonly used method of manufacturing is ‘throwing’ on the potter’s wheel. The potter’s wheel is an excellent tool, if mastered well, to achieve a wide range of circular symmetric pieces. But at times the required shape is organic or geometric and in these cases other methods of ‘hand-building’ are resorted to. In the case of an industry or in any case where mass production of a particular organic shaped piece of

tableware is required, what does one do? This is where ‘slip-casting’ as a method of manufacturing comes into the picture. Slip-casting is a method used in the ceramic industry. It involves the creation of moulds into which clay slips are poured over and over again to create identical pieces of any item. My diploma project was to design ceramic bowls for condiments and serving, inspired by the traditional pottery of India, the ocean and the forest, using the slip-casting method of manufacturing.

The camera is a good example of a product that has not been universally designed. A number of users such as single handed users, left handed users etc. cannot use the present day design of this product. Hence, in this project I simulated various scenarios of the many omitted users to understand their special requirements and create a camera that is universally designed.
