graduating students’ work 2005 -2011
Foreword Debut is the selected work of our graduates compiled for the first Graduation Ceremony of D. J. Academy of Design. It is the graduates’ first step into the world and it showcases the wide variety of design projects undertaken from various industries and design studios. The D J Academy of Design, which started rather humbly with eight students, has grown in the past six years. Our vision has always been to give globally comparable design education that is accessible to all. The student intake had been deliberately kept small, so that we can impart a more personalized education and ensure a work culture conducive to creative learning. We aspire to compensate in quality for quantity. At DJAD we train students for an all round growth as individuals, rather than mere career preparation. The learning here makes them develop their full creative potential and be suitable to work for various industries, design studios or set up their own organizations as design entrepreneurs. In a fragmented society, which is a result of over specialization; we give a generalized education, to make them flexible professionals, who can handle with ease different areas of design, adapt to fast changing technologies and be able to work seamlessly in multi-disciplinary teams. As Dean of this young and unique institution, I would like to place on record my appreciation to various industries, design studios, design professionals and faculty, who have lent their support in our effort by way of sponsoring projects, offering internships and sharing their knowledge and time with our students. This little book carries with it the blessings and good wishes of mine, all the faculty colleagues and management to all the graduates for their great future endeavors. Prof. S. Balaram 30 March, 2012

Brand Identity Redesign Diploma Project Client: Olive Telecommunication, Gurgaon Guide: S. M. Shah
The project brief was to redesign the brand identity, the language of which could be extended to the next level of product categories when required. The logo type projects a progressive and dynamic character, without being casual in outlook. Bright green is associated with modern and high-end technology, where as deep brown projects a down-toearth mood to it. Both of them are highly contrasting to each other. The hint of yellow gives energetic and fresh attitude to the colour palette.

The first phase of the project involved navigation mapping of the resort. Following it, a great deal of research was done into materials and processes that could be used for the signage system. The resort being in Kerala, materials produced in Kerala like coir, terracotta, ceramics, wood and metals like brass, copper, brushed steel were considered. The theme for the resort is ‘Classic Kerala.’ The over all look and feel is inspired by the elements which are an integral part of Kerala’s culture. The outdoor signage was inspired by Vallamkali, the traditional boat race competition during Onam - the harvest festival of Kerala. The illustrations for indoor signage was again borrowed from the visual elements that are found in Kerala’s scenic beauty.

The plate and pouch, designed for Le Mill – a Boutique store in Bombay – were a part of a collection aimed mainly at the non-Indian tourists visiting Bombay. For the plates, the aim was to connect the design with the food served – like the jalebi illustrated on Desert plate here. For Pouches on the theme ‘travel’, a collection of check-in luggage tags were used to create a visually strong connection to the little mementos people buy when they travel. Delhi is undergoing a massive change. We are in the midst of a kind of progress that can undermine the very fabric of the city. One of the recent examples of this “gentrification” is the removal of the age-old flower markets of Delhi. As part of the dialogue of Delhi 2050 event, silk garlands were created which depict images from these very flower markets in a celebratory manner for the delegates.

Save Water Campaign Diploma Project Client: Ogilvy & Mather, New Delhi Guide: Prof. S. Balaram & Ms. Pooja Trehan
Designing a simple graphic logo was the first step in the campaign. The logo is a top-angle shot of hands cupping a drop of water. This design captures the need to conserve every drop and does it with love. In a communication solution for CII to launch a direct mailer campaign targeted to CEOs of large companies, a simple cardboard box packaging was devised with a loud, infomercials branding, “The ultimate water saving gadget”. On opening the box, one found a bucket inside, along with the message, “saving water is really as simple.” For sub cities and rural areas, the campaign focussed to stay close to their everyday vernacular yet cut through the immense marketing clutter. The solution was to take popular songs and proverbs that had any mention of water and replace it with random words to create an interesting message. The campaign signed off with the line, “water has no alternative. Conserve.”

Two projects were done for the final diploma in the field of children’s book illustration. The first project was a tactile story book titled ‘Where is papa’s Button’. The entire book was conceptualized, designed, written and illustrated for the entertainment of blind and partial-sighted children. The book tells a story of the experiences of a blind child, exploring new materials, in the course of finding his/her father’s missing shirt button. It contains many ‘tactile’ illustrations of the materials mentioned in the story. The story helps the child to understand various shapes, sizes, materials, spaces, and plural meanings of the same object. The second project was to illustrate the story ‘The Wednesday Bazaar’, written by author Neha Singh. This project required designing of its various characters, and composing and illustrating the spreads according to the visual description given by the author.

Domestic Solar Water Heater Diploma Project Client: Nuetech Solar Systems, Bangalore Guide: Prof. S. Balaram
Electricity is becoming more and more expensive and unreliable. The solar water heaters are clean and green and thus reflect one’s commitment for preservation of Environment, they are safer than electric geysers as they are located on the Roof, and, if well designed, may even look good on the house top. In a thermo-siphon (or passive) system, as water is heated in the solar panel it rises by convection in to a storage tank located above. Cold water is then drawn into the panel for heating. This type of system is simple has low maintenance, and uses renewable energy. The new solar water heater tries to address problems like Form, Color, production ease and Customer care issues.

The brief was to create a bench mark for the grinder industry without any major change in function. All the existing grinder models look similar. At the same time, the client did not want any changes in the function. In the new product the pivot point of the arm has been to the other side i.e. to the motor side so that it gives more space to lift the drum. The form is inspired from the futuristic cars where clean lines are the main feature. This also gives the users ease of cleaning and at the same time giving it a totally different look from the other grinders. The grinder is provided with a feather touch button with a timer option which helps the users attend simultaniously to other works. The feather touch also helps in ease of cleaning since there are no undercuts like that of the traditional switches. The product is made of ABS and the drum is made up of SS.

Exterior of an ICV for the Year 2025
Trucks are an everyday sight which intimidate people by their sheer size and rugged aggressive styling.
Diploma Project
Concept 2025 is a smart, electric truck designed for the urban environment (narrow roads and streets). The exterior design is based on streamlining and air deflection. The flexible aerofoil provides a smooth and continuous side and top profile, allowing the wind to pass over the cabin and cargo space with minimum obstruction, thus reducing drag. The vehicle overhang had to be restricted, though it could improve aerodynamics, as maneuvering it in tight corners would have been difficult. The strip O-LED lighting makes the vehicle visible in all lighting conditions, even while parked.

Iron Man is one of the earliest super-heroes, an ordinary human being who uses technology to create a superior, revolutionary weapon-laden armor. He is aggressive in his ways. The design of the bus is inspired from Iron Man, whose super power is his technologically brilliant mind. The finished product has aggressive feature lines and futuristic looks. The Iron Man has distinctive eyes which i have designed the headlights on, and the characteristics of his mask have been incorporated into the design. Aggressiveness, Strength, Stability and Power are the characteristics which I want the design to portray. In relation to Iron Man, the headlights depict the eyes, the hood depicts the forehead and the bumper reveals the sharp jaw line. The roof has an integrated air vent that resembles the crown of Iron Man.

The product to be redesigned was next generation stylized locomotive front end in FRP and driver’s desk to be stylized with ergonomics. Initially it was tried to find out the problems with the front end, for making it a base for redesigning but later the idea was changed as a reason for redesigning was that the government bodies are using age old styling it felt the need of new stylized front ends in locomotives, a way to represent themselves in national and international market. The methodology follows with discussions and lots of doubts at each and every stage of project which were thankfully cleared by internal and external guide. Project will be taken forward in the company for further engineering design and various technical analysis.

Polo: Table Top Wet Grinder Diploma Project Client: Lakshmi Home appliances, Coimbatore Guide: C. Mohan
This project considered three basic categories of grinders. 1. Polo Essential – For the users who just use the grinder for grinding without any accessories. Functionality is the major concern. 2. Polo Ultra – For the users who are in the middle income group and would sometimes use the atta kneader and coconut scraper. 3. Polo Premium – For the users who are in the upper segment and mainly working women whose needs are different due to the time constrains. Sometimes men also use this product in this segment. A better design was proposed in these categories. A digital interface was added to the products with a timer and a few advanced functions.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN – 2-way refrigerator This refrigerator can be installed in a door like cut between any tworooms where the need for the product is maximum (like Kitchen/ dining, dining/bed room etc). The product thus serves the needs of both the rooms at the same time. The design does not compromise in the product’s performance. The refrigerator has the evaporator coils on the side in two strips. This allows the air to be in contact, and keep the cooling process going uninterrupted by the walls. The refrigerator is accessible to all users, including to those who are wheel chair bound. This design has been registered. Prof. S. Balaram & Kanaka Ananth

51 SIMPLE PRODUCT DESIGN – Easy threading needle To thread a needle has always been a difficult task as the hole and the thread head are almost of the same size. This design solves the problem by a simple form manipulation and material use. The needle is moulded in plastic (Poly propylene) with a FLEXIBLE EYE. The eye expands for easy threading when pressed andmicro-ribbings at the tip retain the sharpness for penetration. The simplicity of the solution and the ability to mass produce makes this design unique. Guide: Prof. S. Balaram
