DEBUT 5 :DJAD graduating students’ work 2017

Foreword This Debut carries within it the selected work of our graduates, compiled for the fifth Graduation Day ceremony of D J Academy of Design. On the occasion of the graduates’ first step into the world, it showcases the wide variety of design projects undertaken by the budding designers for various industries and design studios. D J Academy of Design, which started rather humbly with eight students, has grown in the past twelve years. Our vision has always been to give globally comparable design education that is locally accessible to all people. The student intake had been deliberately kept small, so that we can impart a more personalized education and ensure a work culture conducive to creative learning. We aspire to give priority to quality even if it meant less quantity. At the Academy, we train students for an all-round growth as individuals, rather than mere career preparation for job seekers. The learning here makes them develop their full creative potential and become suitable not only to work for various industries or for design studios but also to set up their own organizations as design entrepreneurs. In a fragmented society, which is a result of over specialization, we have opted for a somewhat generalized education, which makes the young students as mature and flexible professionals, who can handle with ease the different areas of design, adapt to the fast changing technologies and be able to work seamlessly in the multi-disciplinary teams. As Dean of this young and unique institution, I have immense pleasure to place on record my appreciation to various industries, design studios and business houses who have lent their support in our effort by way of sponsoring projects, offering internships and opening their premises and hearts to our students. I am grateful to the designers and other professionals who, as visiting faculty, shared their field knowledge and precious time with our students. This publication carries with it the blessings and good wishes of mine, all my faculty colleagues and the management, to all the graduates for their future endeavors. Prof. S. Balaram Dean, D J Academy of Design, Coimbatore

BASRUR - the land that was, is an illustrated film based on the folk tales of Basrur, a small village in southern coastal Karnataka. The entire process involved going to the village and learning about the rich heritage from the people there. A number of smaller stories were combined to form the script of the film, which revolves around the life of Shanta, a young girl as she discovers the stories of her land. The illustrations were hand drawn and later motion and sound was added to give it some life.

Our roots are what make us who we are. It does not define us but it does add a uniqueness to our personality which separates us from the pack. Each of us has a unique story. But most of us do not wander into our past. I wanted to do just that. Hence I chose to base my project on the village where my ancestors lived once.

Life is an album of experiences; both good and bad. But, UNMEI (fate in Japanese) is the one uncontrollable factor in life that decides whether a person experiences good things for a bad reason or bad things for a good reason. As a young man, K.V. Narain leaves for Japan to pursue his studies. As the days pass, he meets a Japanese girl whom he falls in love with. Just as he thought things couldn’t get any better, the Japanese Imperial Army under the command of General Hideki Tojo bomb the Pearl harbor. UNMEI is a story

DEBUT 5 :DJAD graduating students’ work 2017

about a fight between love and fate fought in the mind of K.V. Narain during the 1945 Tokyo bombings. The story of the resilient K.V. Narain’s struggle has been passed on through the generations of the Setlur family. In order to keep this legendary Setlur’s story alive and heroic, it was decided to illustrate in the form of a graphic novel.

From the type of plates and glasses to the food, every community in our country has a different dining set up. At the Tandel’s, we sat on the colourful tiled floor to enjoy a simple meal of rice, dal and fried potatoes. We sat chatting in the living room as I relished the hot “waran-bhat.” I felt my inhibitions vaporise as we ate and spoke more about the Kolis. This is the staple food in most Maharashtrian homes. It is easy to prepare and yet it’s finger-licking good! Over lunch, we spoke about the local elections and how the involvement of women has made drastic improvements in the civic life of the koliwada. With very few men and women willing to shoulder the responsibilities of the committee, Shobh Taii said that managing home, business and community work was no easy task. I also learned a little about Colaba’s history. This tiny hamlet inside Colaba was buzzing with people and hawkers unlike the rest of South Bombay or SoBo as it is called these days. Renowned all over the world for its heritage buildings and monuments, this part of Mumbai attracts the chunk of travellers from all over the world. Some of the buildings dating back to the late eighteenth century still stand tall. Lost somewhere in this Victorian and Gothic architecture is the Colaba koliwada. The conch is a seating that has been designed for the beach and is inspired from the structure of a conch. The conch allows the user to use the furniture as a lounge chair or as a bench. The conch also provides a partial shelter for shade from the sun and an open space that allows the user to rest and sunbathe.

The spilling chai table is inspired from tea spilling from a tea glass. The concept was to use liquid, a formless element and represent it in a solid form. The spilling tea in motion shown here in wood makes for the space on the table and flows down to form the leg of one end of the table.

With emphasis on healthy cooking and eating right, the project aims to bring back terracotta cookware into home kitchens. Lack of demand for clay cookware these days has led to our terracotta traditions soon vanishing. What if our daily cookware could be produced locally to support potters for a livelihood, while maintaining good health? My project was to design a steamer vessel in terracotta clay. It focuses on the health

DEBUT 5 :DJAD graduating students’ work 2017

benefits of the material, while meeting requirements of present-day Indian kitchens. The steamer is designed to be produced by throwing on the potters’ wheel. Upon being heated, the soaked clay vessel releases steam from its pores. This property helps moist cooking food in the clay steamer. The attempt was to strike a balance between the efficiency of the vessel, manufacturing viability and the volume of the vessel in relation to the volume of food cooked.

Craft Design. Varnam Crafts, Bangalore Guide: Kanaka Ananth As part of my diploma project, I worked on a range of products designed for Varnam Craft Collectives, which works specifically with Channapatna crafts. Since this craft is essentially associated with making of toys alone, I wanted to explore and design different products. I decided to work on a range of fashion jewellery, for the contemporary women combining two different traditional crafts of Karnataka i.e. with bidriware from Bidar. The silver inlay in black metal, implacably compliment the bright coloured Channapatna craft and would give more

value to the jewellery pieces. The Inspiration story was taken from the Darwaazas of our craft town Bidar. The process included Intensive research, understanding the crafts and its users, experimenting with the craft i.e. trying to fuse it with other crafts. The deliverables included two ranges of jewellery and its visual design. Also a new brand called Darwaaza, an extension of Varnam’s jewellery line was created.

Forward Design is a power. Design is a power significantly more than what it was initially thought to become. Design had come a long way since its humble beginnings of making things prettier. Today design encompasses every sphere of life and designers are recognised as agents of change. Designers are playing an increasingly important role in making the world so much more beautiful, so much more pleasurable, and so much more meaningful, than ever. Designers must remember this. The downside is even more important for designers not to ignore. A designer also has an important role in making the world so much warmer to live, so much more crowded with waste and so much more chocked with pollution, than ever. Design is a responsibility with a big R. Because every power goes with an equally proportionate responsibility. More the power, more is the responsibility. This responsibility is the most important challenge to the creativity of all designers. During every bit of design task that we undertake to do, we must constantly be asking this crucial question that whether it is contributing to make a better world or a worse world, whether its vision is large or narrow; whether it is long sighted or short sighted. In the answer lies our future. On the occasion of your entering into the practicing of this wonderful profession called design, I would like to leave with you this thought to guide you well towards the brightest future that I wish for you. Let us create a better world. Prof. S. Balaram (On the Graduation Day 30, July 2017 addressing the graduating students)
