VANS US OPEN OF SURFING RETURNS TO HUNTINGTON BEACH The Vans US Open of Surfing will return to the southside of the Huntington Beach Pier this summer to host the world’s best action sports athletes from July 28 through August 5, 2018. The weeklong summer festival will showcase the best in surfing, skateboarding, and BMX, while providing engaging beach activities for the entire family to enjoy. This year’s surfing competitions include the highly-anticipated World Surf League (WSL) Women’s Championship Tour (CT) event, the men’s WSL Qualifying Series (QS) 10,000 contest, and the men’s and women’s Pro Junior event. The WSL Championship Tour is the world’s premier surfing series and crowns the World Champion at the conclusion of each season. A star-studded lineup of competitors at the Vans US Open of Surfing, Stop No. 7 of 10, will feature California’s own Lakey Peterson (USA), Courtney Conlogue (USA), Sage Erickson (USA) and newest resident Caroline Marks (USA) vying for valuable points at home. This marks the eighth year that Surf City, USA has hosted the women’s CT. Erickson is gearing up to defend her title but will have to take on former event winners Peterson (current World No. 1) and Brazil’s Tatiana WestonWebb (current World No. 3). Also in attendance will be the top Pro Junior talents set to stake their claim at the iconic beach break after a Hawaii-surfer sweep in 2017 by Brisa Hennessy (HAW) and Cody Young (HAW). This year, a strong North America contingent is on hand to keep the event titles on home soil, including two of 2018’s most in-form surfers, Kirra Pinkerton (USA) and Crosby Colapinto (USA). 10 | July 26, 2018 | OC WEEKLY SURF GUIDE
Across the sand, an exciting battle of professional skateboarding awaits as the Vans Park Series, the premier competition in park terrain skateboarding for men and women, meets in Surf City for the third qualifying stop on the 2018 VPS Pro Tour. Featuring a new expanded women’s Pro circuit, the Vans Park Series welcomes all prospective women competitors to enter for their chance to skate in the World Championships. The Vans Park Series Pro Tour will determine pivotal Men’s and Women’s rankings in the race to the Championships, while the Vans Park Series Continental Championships slates to crown a new Americas champion, challenging qualifying regional men and women competitors to claim glory on their home turf. For BMX fans and longboarding enthusiasts, the Vans BMX Pro Cup Series will charge in full force, offering record-breaking BMX maneuvering by the world’s most talented BMX riders in the industry, while the Vans Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational longboarding series re-emerges with its first-ever all-women division, showcasing style and grace from the best female loggers in the sport. With activities and workshops scheduled every day beginning July 28, Vans US Open will ignite a plethora of live action summer entertainment, including surfboard shaping workshops, live art installations, customization workshops, music lessons, movie nights and much more. Stay tuned for the full schedule of events at VansUSOpenofSurfing.com. For more information, including continued updates and scheduling, please visit VansUSOpenofSurfing.com

ummer’s here, and it’s time again for one of Orange County’s oldest traditions. Are we talking about the Orange International Street Fair? Nope, we’re talking about the US Open of Surfing. Once again, OC Weekly is back to guide you through all the dramatic twists and turns of the world’s largest and oldest active surf competition. So, grab that S.P.F. 30, your best $5 sunglasses, and start crash-dieting to perfect your beach body because the US Open will be here from July 28 to Aug. 5. For those who didn’t know, the US Open is the oldest surfing competition in the world. Founded in 1959 and titled the West Coast Surfing Championship, the competition helped streamline Huntington Beach from a post-war oil town to the center of the surfing would. Though it’s not the oldest continuous competition–that honor belongs to the Bells Beach Pro in Australia–the US Open is undoubtedly the world’s most-viewed surfing event. According to the OC Register, the nearly 500,000 estimated attendees in 2010 spent $21.5 million in Orange County, $16.4 million of which was spent directly in Huntington Beach. This year’s contests promise to outshine all previous years. Sponsor Vans has upped the ante in 2018 by adding the BMX Pro Park series to the skateboarding and surfing competitions that have made the US Open an international treasure.

the Vans BMX men’s Pro Park series at the US Open. Edgar is the reigning world champion of the Vans BMX Pro Park series, and is coming off a hot win in Sydney, Australia, at the first stop of the 2018 Vans BMX Pro Park series. Last year, the 25-year-old Corona native placed second at the Huntington Beach stop of the Pro Park series, but was still crowned the overall winner. Following his first place finish at 2018’s inaugural event in Sydney, a win at the US Open would bolster Edgar’s chances to reclaim his title as the best male BMX park rider in the world. But there’s more to Edgar than sheer BMX talent. A quick look at his Instagram page reveals that Edgar is a big fan of scaling the sand dunes of Ocotillo Wells in his 4x4 Toyota truck with his girlfriend, model Mel Rodriguez. Check them out on Instagram @larry_edgar and @melalicia
BMX WOMEN
Teresa Azcoaga is simply the gnarliest rider on the Vans BMX women’s circuit today. Her 89.00 score at the Vans Pro Cup Sydney destroyed the next closest competitor, Angie Marino, by nearly 6 full points! Although she placed 6th at last year’s Pro Cup final in Huntington Beach, Azcoaga undoubtedly has the hardest charging style. At the US Open, it’ll be easier to spot Azcoaga in the air than in the pool. Her ferocious style relies on speed, massive tweaked airs over steep hips, and butter-smooth carving. CONTINUED ON PAGE 32

SKATE MEN
Pedro Barros is skating better than anyone on the Vans Pro Park skate series in 2018. The 23-year-old Brazilian’s second place finish in Brazil and first place finish in Vancouver make him the favorite to win the third stop of the tour at the US Open. Barros has won six X Games gold medals in skateboard park, three X Games silver medals in Skateboard Park, and has never finished below a silver medal in the event since turning pro in 2010. Barros skates a pool harder and with more technical precision than any other competitor. During his gold medal run at Vancouver in July, Barros blasted out of the pool with vicious 15 foot high backside airs, and coupled his powerful grabs by finessing backside tail-slides and ultra-technical ollie 360s to fakies. You can find him on Instagram @pedrobarrossk8 If anyone can challenge Pedro Barros, it’s Alex Sorgente. Sorgente was hot behind Barros at the Vans Pro in Vancouver with a third place finish, and was the 2016 Vans Pro Park series overall winner. After putting down a 57 in his first run of the 2017 X Games, Sorgente was deep behind contest leader Tom Schaar, and needed a pristine second run in order to place. Sorgente’s second run was brilliant. He masterfully nailed kickflip indie to fakies and giant spine transfers with ease. When all was said and done, Sorgente took home the gold in the 2017 X Games. SKATE WOMEN
Yndiara Asp, like her fellow Brazilian Pedro Barros, is undoubtedly the most exciting skater in her division. Asp’s high-speed skating, coupled with her technically demanding bag of tricks, won her a silver medal at the first stop of the 2018 Vans Pro Park women’s circuit in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her tweaked stalefish grabs and high boneless airs out of Pro Park pools hark back to the style of legendary pool skaters like Lance Mountain and Christian Hosoi. Since being signed to Santa Cruz Skateboards in 2017, Asp has laid siege to the sport of park skateboarding. In the past year, she’s gone from obscurity to being one of the most dangerous skaters in the world. Don’t believe me? Check out her Instagram @yndiaraasp Probably the most consistent skater on the women’s circuit today is Jordyn Barratt. Barratt always seems to be at the top of every major contest. She’s finished with a bronze in Women’s Skateboard Park at X Games 2016, and silver the following year. PHOTO BY JOANNE BARRATT
Additionally, Barratt and the US Open are historically intertwined. Back in 2016, when Barratt was only 17, she became the first woman to compete in both the surfing and skate competitions. That same year, she won bronze at the US Open skate contest. Barratt is a huge fan of punk rock legends like the Misfits, she and frequently skates with the X Games legend Bucky Lasek. WOMEN’S CT SURF
Name a better surfer on the Women’s CT in the past 10 years than Stephanie Gilmore. Go ahead, I’ll wait. Gilmore is currently first in the 2018 CT, thanks to her three gold and one bronze medal finishes this season. Gilmore has already won six world championships, including one during her miraculous 2007 rookie season. Last season, the 30-year-old Australian finished second in the Women’s CT. Though her career took a dip when she finished 12th in 2015, Gilmore rebounded quickly, finishing fifth in the following year, and second last year. Follow her Instagram @stephaniegilmore Santa Barbara native Lakey Peterson is second in the Women’s CT this year, and is quickly gaining on Stephanie Gilmore. Peterson finished second to Gilmore at the J-Bay Pro event early in July, and seeks redemption at the US Open, one of her favorite competitions. Peterson finished second at the 2011 US Open, and finished first the following year. A check on Peterson’s Instagram page @lakeypeterson shows her dedication to surfing, and her love of working out.

Brazilian Peterson Crisanto is the guy to beat in the Men’s QS at the US Open this year. Crisanto is currently first in the Men’s QS, and is coming off a first place finish at the Ballito Pro on June 25. The 26-year-old Brazilian’s Instagram @peterson_crisanto is an homage to surfing. Searching though his Instagram, you’ll find an endless stream of pictures showing Crisanto flying high above massive waves. His style is sure to impress at this year’s US Open as Crisanto tries to replace Huntington Beach local Kanoa Igarashi as this year’s US Open Men’s QS champion.

GRUB GUIDE BY OC WEEKLY STAFF
It’s during these nine days of the Vans US Open of Surfing that really allow another one of Huntington Beach’s finest surfing by-products to shine: surf food! The local restaurants of Downtown Huntington Beach open their doors to showcase a taste of HB: which is to say, laid back, cheap, tasty and of course, hand-held — all well within distance of a riding a beach cruiser to.
paired with some tasty fish and chips and catch a live original band.
So whether you’re looking to keep your beach body or carbo-load to fuel you for the next competition, allow us to present 10 must try restaurants if you want to taste the rainbow of Huntington Beach beach food mainstays
_______SESSIONS WEST COAST DELI
_______BRUXIE
Ever since it opened in Old Town Orange eight years ago and single-handedly ignited the waffle sandwich craze, Bruxie’s expansion seemed inevitable. It has since opened shops in Santa Monica, Brea, Chino Hills, Huntington Beach, Irvine, San Diego and Vegas, baby! They’ve mastered their recipe with a crispy, not-so-sweet waffle. Then, the crunchiest, juiciest, most delicious fried chicken ever. And boom! Awesomeness was born.
_______GALLAGHER’S PUB & GRILL In case the rest of OC hasn’t been paying attention, live music in Huntington Beach is actually starting to become a thing again. In the last 12 months, an infusion of popular events like Punk in Drublic Fest, Coastal Country Jam, and Like Totally ‘80s Fest are opening a new chapter for local music festival goers. But what about the sounds of the HB bar scene? The seaside city still has a long way to go to reclaim the glory of the days of Safari Sam’s and The Golden Bear. Thankfully, the new owners of Gallagher’s Pub and Grill, one of oldest bars in Downtown HB, is returning some vitality to the city’s Main Street scene. Belly up to the bar and enjoy a cold pint 3 8 | July 26, 2018 | OC WEEKLY SURF GUIDE
_______PERQ’S
Take a break from the Huntington madness, and walk up Main Street and drop into Perq’s for $4 Jaeger shots and Upheaval IPA. The sandwiches at Sessions West Coast Deli aren’t just sandwiches. They’re the kind on which the kitchen slather aioli, not mayo, and the thousand island is called a million island because, you know, it’s better. Of course, these not-just-sandwiches are also made with bread from Dean Kim’s OC Baking Co., arguably the contract baker of choice for when a premium sandwich shop such as Sessions wants to stick out amongst the recent crop of premium sandwich shops. Sessions’ dedication and commitment to its community has made it a hub for local surfers, skaters and Orange County diners looking for great sandwiches. What better place to conquer your hunger at the beach?
_______WAHOO’S FISH TACOS
Though it’s fodder for those who sneer that Wahoo’s has become corporate, it doesn’t take away from the accomplishments of brothers Wing Lam, Eduardo Lee and Mingo Lee, who pioneered taking vaguely Mexican, Brazilian and Asian flavors to make something very Californian, uniquely OC. The 2nd generation restaurateurs parlayed a love for surfing into a successful restaurant empire which started in Costa Mesa and over the years Wahoo’s has strived to be a part of the communities they serve which now include California, Colorado, Texas, and Hawaii. And then there’s the substance without which no Wahoo’s meal is complete: the wonderful chili paste called CONTINUED ON PAGE 40_______

“Mr. Lee’s.” It’s named for the family patriarch and the only artifact that Wahoo’s shares with Shanghai Pine Garden. This is real, unadulterated sambal. As with Midas, it turns everything it touches into gold. The tofu-centric Wafu bowl, in particular, becomes a willing, blank canvas for liberal slathers of the complex flavor and depth of this paste. When Mr. Lee’s is on the job, the Tapatío bottle will be left untouched.
_______GRINDERZ The fanciest thing here is a fine chipotle mayo dressing you should get on the side, with Thousand Island on your patty. Oh, and there’s a turkey burger for people who want to watch their calories (and if you’re one of those, just stick to rice cakes, as delicious as the turkey patty may be). Everything else is unadulterated Americana. The potato bun is sturdy and chewy; the beef, sweet and juicy. Lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions add tart and crunch. Eat one, or make it a double, and you’ll wonder why anyone ever wanted to put a fucking egg inside a burger. _______SECRET SPOT

The most interesting thing about the Surround Sound burrito at Huntington Beach’s Secret Spot is that there isn’t very much that’s burritolike about it at all. Sure it comes wrapped in a warm tortilla like most other burritos out there, but here–at this vegan-centric after-surf shack run by a staff of friendly (if perpetually slow to cook your food) stoners–this tortilla’s innards have nothing to do with refried beans, rice or even spiced meat from a spit. In their place instead is a semi-healthy mix of fried potatoes, gobs of melted cheese, creamy avocado and a dousing of sweet and savory homemade BBQ sauce, all of which swirls around your choice of protein to make the best foil-wrapped, handheld surfer fuel in the whole damn county.

_______BODHI TREE CAFE Surf City’s Main Street scene can overwhelm the senses, so a nice, quiet place to feed your mind and body is Bodhi Tree. The uninitiated may see a plate of crispy lemon “chicken” or a bowl of sizzling rice soup with “pork” and think they have stumbled into a typical Asian restaurant. But Bodhi Tree’s tasty meats are mock; all dishes are vegan. And un-mock meat eaters and those who won’t eat anything with a face love this place equally. It’s so peaceful you’ll find enlightenment after the fifth bite of each dish, guaranteed.
_______THE LONGBOARD RESTAURANT & PUB The Longboard Restaurant and Pub bills itself as the “best restaurant and pub in the world as we know it.” There’s a full bar (and several flat-screen televisions set to sports networks) in front and a cozy patio area in back, so take your pick. Whatever beer you’re drinking–yes, you are still drinking; it’s Surf City in the summertime, bro–it’ll go great with either the Jamming Jerk Wings or the barbecue tri-tip sandwich.

_______SEALEGS AT THE BEACH Thanks to rosé being THE booze of this summer, every mass-market bar in Orange County makes some version of frosé—the pink wine in slushy form. But the best one is SeaLegs At the Beach’s White Girl Frosé. It’s not just that the spot is gorgeous, the upcoming concerts great, or that owner Alicia Whitney is a former Weekling. It’s not even its name, which comes from the White Girl Wine that SeaLegs uses as a base. It’s the gargantuan 20-ounce souvenir cup the drink comes in—perfect for MILFs and GILFs alike. And then comes the actual drink. White Girl Rosé itself is fine, tastes a bit like watermelon. But the SeaLegs folks put something in the slushie part of it that makes the drink perfect for its Bolsa Chica State Beach location—effervescence or magic or something.
SOUTHERN TWIST Add 1.5 oz. of root beer to make it a Bold Root Fashioned.
