ANOTHER MIAMI INTERNATIONAL BOAT Show

is in the books, and for me it was two days of full-throttle pounding the docks, going from boat premiere to boat premiere. It’s like speed dating for boating writers and editors. Appropriate, considering opening day of the show was Valentine’s Day. An interesting model for several reasons was the Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence. It’s a center console that can easily be called a day yacht, because it has a single-level deck, bow and stern seating areas, and an on-deck galley console. Surprisingly, four Mercury Verado 350 hp outboards provide the power. While OA has built boats this size before, its smallest yacht for a few years now has been a 70-footer, so this is both a departure and a return to the past. Scout Boats introduced an even bigger center console at the show. Its 530 LXF stretches more than 53 feet, is outfitted for serious fishing, features a bow seating

area, includes a spacious cabin and gives buyers engine options — four, five or six outboards. One hull had six Mercury 400s. I rode on one that had five Yamaha XTO 425s. Unfortunately we weren’t able to crank things up, but Yamaha testing yielded a top speed of 57 mph with quads. Scout expects 68 mph with six Mercs. Australian builder Palm Beach added a touch of sportiness to its lineup with an Open version of its GT50. It’s for buyers who want a 40-knot top speed, sleeping accommodations for four and a nice galley but prefer to have a topless boat. Many other boats are worth a mention — Chris-Craft 27 Catalina Pilot House, Lagoon 46, Aquila 30, Cabo 41, Azimut Verve 47, Viking 38 BF — but I’ll conclude with the Tiara Sport 38 LS. We published a sea trial a few months ago, and since then the builder has collaborated with Volvo Penta to hang a pair of Seven Marine 527 outboards on the transom (Volvo owns Seven) and pair them with Volvo’s Electronic Vessel Control system, which brings a helm-to-prop driving system that includes joystick control. Interesting developments everywhere this year, even if I did have to run to keep up with them all.

NEW FROM THE NETHERLANDS Zeelander’s flagship strives to be a smaller superyacht.

DUTCH BUILDER ZEELANDER Yachts introduced its latest build, the Z72, late last year, and fans of the builder’s previous models will instantly recognize the new flagship as a Zeelander. With a curvy exterior, a sheerline that swoops aft from a high bow, and wraparound cabin windows that bring to mind fashionable sunglasses, the Z72 is a real looker. Hull #1 should be delivered by the time this issue goes to press. Like on the Z44 and the Z55, the tumblehome transom on the Z72 is rounded and swept forward. And it conceals one of the yacht’s signature features: a gigantic swim platform. Most of the transom unfolds and stops just above the water to create a teak beach complete with a sun bed and a cabana of sorts overhead. Making The main cabin is a spacious, airy and well-lit area such a transom accomthat includes a “floating” helm pod. The spacious U-shaped galley is aft, and thanks to a bulkhead window that retracts, the cook or cocktail creator can serve folks inside and out. Immediately aft of the helm seat, which can be converted to face aft and join the festivities, is a dining table that has more seating at a bench settee aft and a two-seat bench to port. All the way forward in the three-stateroom layout is a master that features a king berth, overhead panels accented with dark varnished wood, a large overhead hatch, hullside windows, curving bulkheads and leather-trimmed accents. Additional accommodations consist of a pair of guest doubles amidships, where angled entry doors optimize the use of space while highlighting the mirror design. Each stateroom has its own private head with a separate shower. Volvo Penta IPS power is the norm, and Zeelander offers a selection of triple-engine choices, including IPS950, 1050, 1200 and 1350. Early estimates place top speed at 40 knots with the IPS1350s, which produce 1,000 hp each. Zeelander Yachts, zeelander.com

Tokens of Good Luck

Water deities seem to have existed for most of human history, water being as important to our basic survival as it is. Boaters often use gods as names for their vessel or as a token of good luck when they go to sea. Most are familiar with St. Elmo, the patron saint of sailors. Cabo San Lucas

10 PACIFIC BAJA PIT STOPS Northbound boaters don’t have a ton of options for breaks during the bash, but they do exist.

THE PACIFIC SIDE OF the Baja California peninsula is ruggedly beautiful and sparsely popu-

lated. Its pristine coastal waters hold a treasure trove of marine life and colorful flora and fauna, and the sportfishing is world famous. On the weather front, Pacific Baja is swept by the West Coast’s prevailing northwest winds, but they’re usually not too bad in April. The outside of Baja is infamous for its lack of yacht services and reliable overnight anchorages. Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas are havens, but the 740-nautical mile stretch in between is kind of an abyss. Want to sleep every night in a comfortable anchorage? Dream on. Tired and hankering for a quiet slip with dock power? Forget it. Need an emergency haulout? Sorry, no boatyards are to be found along the Baja abyss. The only diesel pier for recreational boats is at Turtle Bay, where it’s expensive. However, 10 reliable “pit stops” are perfectly useful, and since many boaters are planning to head up Baja during April, or to bash north before summer hurricane season begins down south, I present them here, in geographic order from south to north.

Magdalena Bay Area

From Cabo San Lucas it’s about 175 miles up the coast to Magdalena Bay. However, 25 miles short of there is a pit stop, should a crew need to rest or time their entrance. Experienced boaters anchor in the lee of Punta Tosca [1 ] in fair weather. After giving this reef-fringed point a healthy 1-mile berth, we’ve carefully anchored one and a half to two miles northeast of the old and new lighthouses. This spot has served well as a lunch stop or for a daylight nap. But because waves driven by strong northwest winds can suddenly wrap around the point, I don’t recommended an overnight stay. From here, boaters are looking north into the jaws of the dangerous Canal de Rehusa (Reject Channel), which they must avoid. Two more pit stops in the Mag Bay area [2,3] — both just single-boat anchorages — are only half of a mile inside the two entrance points, Punta Redondo and Punta Entrada. Past these possibilities, most boats proceed four miles north inside Mag Bay to make a pit stop off Belcher’s Point. Or they’ll continue another six miles north to the popular Man of War Cove in Puerto Magdalena. Or they’ll continue 18 miles north outside Mag Bay’s perimeter island and slide easily into Santa Maria Bay.

Bahia San Juanico

Beefy trawlers heading up the coast from Mag Bay often bypass Bahia San Juanico [4] , 85 miles due north of Cabo San Lorenzo, because they’re eager to jump offshore and bash 225 miles northwest — smack into the teeth of the northwesterlies — to reach the diesel hose at Turtle Bay. Meanwhile, little San Juanico Bay almost always provides a tranquil anchorage in the lee of Punta Pequena. San Juanico is the first of three reliable pit stops for overnighting, or for pumping down deck fuel, or for a daylight nap before bashing north in the calmer overnight hours.

Eyes Wide Open

Abreojos Bay [5] is the second of three reli-

Punta Tosca’s lee affords a tiny anchorage that’s good in flat weather, for a daytime nap stop, but this boat is too close to the lighthouse.

colliding with a whale. Laguna San Ignacio’s national park and whale sanctuary is 15 miles east, but private boats and dinghies aren’t allowed, so Abreojos anchorage is where visitors can board one of the park rangers’ pangas to go pet the whales.

Asuncion Bay

Asuncion Bay [6] — the last of three consecutive overnight pit stops — is about 50 miles up from Abreojos and provides the best overnight shelter. Avoid the lighted island and anchor off the village beach about a mile north-northeast of the lighted point. Asuncion village has a Pemex station (diesel and gas), two fishing cooperatives, grocery stores, restaurants and good drinking water. Best yet, Shari Bondi and husband Juan Arce at Campo Sirena can bring fuel to boats at anchor or shag parts or repairs in town. Asuncion has a larger population than Turtle Bay, and it’s closer via paved road to Highway 1. able pit stops on the blustery coast between Mag Bay and Turtle Bay. The name “Open the Eyes” refers to eight hazards within its 10-fathom curve, so I suggest approaching from the east and anchoring in either of the two roomy coves within three miles northeast of Punta Abreojos. The crew should keep their eyes open to avoid

Turtle Bay

More than just a pit stop, Turtle Bay [7] is the largest and most reliable overnight anchorage on the Baja Abyss. It’s where boaters line up to fuel up from Enrique’s fuel hose at the end of the rickety old pier, and, as the saying goes, “Turtle Bay is halfway!”

Cedros Island

The crew can make a comfortable pit stop at Cedros Town Harbor

[8] on the southeast side of Cedros Island. Before arrival, contact

Cedros Island Outdoor Adventures to line up San fuel, alongside docking, mechanical help or a Juanico is local fishing guide. At the north end of this 20-mile island, the the first other pit stop is dubbed “Cedros Island Yacht of three Club [9] .” That’s dark humor, because nasty reliable pit weather is the reason boats stop here, then get stops. stuck waiting to cross Bahia Vizcaino. It’s just a narrow ledge in 45 feet of water about two to two and a half miles southeast of Punta Cedros Light on the island’s north headland. Punta Norte village nearby has a dozen shacks but no water or electricity.

San Carlos, BCN

At 90 miles north-northwest of Cedros Island, the anchorage in this broad indent east of Punta San Carlos is the least bad of six “small hopes” that dot the north shore of Bahia Vizcaino. Landfall in this bay, known as Fondeadero San Carlos [10] , might be easier for some northbound boaters than holding a tough course for the west side of the infamous Sacramento Reef. Approach it from the south to avoid breakers off the west shoreline. Hoping to get a good night’s rest, I’ve anchored here, one and a half miles northeast of the islet off Punta San Carlos, about a dozen times but half those times the wind picked up and rolled us right out.

THE EXPERTS

KEEP AN EYE ON WEAR & TEAR

Routine water-pump maintenance is simple but important to the health of a boat’s diesel engine(s). By DEANE HISLOP WHEN WE ARE UNDERWAY aboard Easy Goin’ I tend to keep an eye on the temperature

gauge. Scanning the other gauges regularly is important, but in my experience the most likely engine problem to develop is overheating. That’s because the pump that circulates seawater through the heat exchanger is subject to heavy wear due to salt, sand and other grit. Raw-water pumps haven’t changed in decades, and perhaps with good reason. While they do require attention and service, they are remarkably reliable, considering the circumstances under which they operate. Turning several hundred or several thousand times per minute, an impeller’s flexible synthetic-rubber blades are dragging along the inside of the pump cylinder and cover plate. The cam, an arc-shaped wedge of metal located inside the pump, is where all the action 18 SEAMAGAZINE.COM APRIL 2019

ASK THE EXPERTS and work take place. Without the cam, no water would be transported. As each blade sweeps over the cam’s concave surface, it is deformed and creates an area of low pressure, causing water to be sucked into the void and then ejected out the pump’s discharge port. All this rotating action can go terribly wrong when the parts inside the pump begin to deteriorate. In addition to

the impeller, other components are subject to wear, fatigue and outright failure; as such, they require periodic inspection and replacement. If the cover plate wears and the fit between the plate and side of the impeller becomes too loose, water and air can squeeze past the vanes. The cover plate should be replaced as soon as wear can be

felt on its bearing surface. Any irregularity that can be perceived by running one’s fingertips over the wearing surface is too much. On the other hand, visual irregularities such as discoloring are commonplace and are of little concern. An old acceptable cruising trick was to reverse a worn cover plate, thereby doubling its life. But today most cover plates are embossed with the manufacturer’s logo or part number and model number. The cam also wears away with each pass of the impeller blades, becoming smaller and smaller. In many cases, the degree of wear a cam has been subjected to is not apparent until the boat owner compares it to a new one. Cam wear is critical in that as the cam shrinks, so too does its output. A worn cam can’t compress the vanes efficiently and the pump will lose some capacity, which causes the engine to run a bit warmer at high speeds. It’s important to carefully inspect the cam’s securing screw and gasket, as these also need to be replaced. Some pumps are equipped with a wear plate, which will be behind the impeller and on the opposite side of the cover plate. As with the cover plate, if you can feel any grooves or scoring on the wear plate, it should be replaced. Overhaul kits are available for most pump models. A kit typically includes an impeller, a cover plate and cap screws, a wear plate, a cam, and screws and a gasket. The kits normally don’t contain parts to fix worn seals, shafts, or bearings. If your pump is leaking, you may be better off having it professionally rebuilt at a fraction of the cost of a new pump. A good rule of thumb is to replace the cover plate, cam and wear plate (if so equipped) with new ones with every third impeller replacement. Beyond that, remain vigilant for water and oil leaks at the shaft seals. In some cases, such leaks are a result of simple wear and tear; in other cases, they are an indication of impending shaft bearing failure, which means you’re operating on borrowed time. Don’t take chances with an engine’s raw-water supply. When a pump has seen better days, rebuild or replace it without delay.

GRINDING GRID’S GEARS

Where’s the Next Gen of Techs? I HAVE BEEN ON a tear for the last 30 years about the lack of marine tech education. There are a few schools outside of those provided by engine manufacturers. One is excellent. All are short on attendees. Boats now easily start in the $50,000 range. A single 250 hp engine is $27,000, rigged. The engine called “The 7” — all 627 hp of it — costs about $100,000, and it is usually rigged in multiples. If one works for a dealer and attends tech school, he’ll learn the latest and greatest, then be faced with servicing 5-year-old engines when he returns to the dealer. There’s nothing wrong with that if he has the skills to work on them, or engines built at the turn of the most recent century. He probably won’t be faced with servicing what he just went to school for until 2024. In the last 24 years there has been a surge of technology that was unexpected. With engine control simplification — we have fly-by-wire, joystick controls, and a manufacturer who’s now developed a boat without a steering wheel, completely joystick dependent — can you afford to have a tech who might understand counter-rotating props or “old-timey” hydraulic steering, but can’t tell when a rigger pre-rigging a boat ran a stainless screw through a wiring harness? That’s the kind of oversight that could allow salt water to enter the cable and destroy the electronic function somewhere between the mainland and Catalina Island. Boaters are faced with too much technology, much as car drivers are. Ads show 40-foot outboard-powered boats powering through 6-foot seas, with 900 hp at the skipper’s call. The skipper is changing screens on his console, constantly monitoring each engine’s performance. He glances at the GPS, checks the smaller knot reading. He checks the VHF. Did he notice that shadow that was a mostly sunken container off a container ship? Six guys sit in a broken million-dollar rig with three over-revving engines that don’t have gear

cases, all wondering where the life vests are. If that owner is taking that kind of risk in unforgiving waters, he can ill afford a minimum wage mechanic coming within 10 feet of the boat. A friend of mine has a great saying: “Some people don’t recognize opportunity because it comes dressed in coveralls.” Your life, and the lives of those around you, are totally dependent on the technical skills of the tech servicing your boat, and the maturity with which you operate it. Encourage your dealers and the educational system to push for quality marine techs. There is no shame in working with one’s hands.

Bilge Boat Monitor System

Hubbell Marine

Hubbell Marine’s new Countertop Receptacles install discretely in a galley or head countertop and bring an outlet closer to where people need it. A push down pops the a 15A, 125V receptacle up, and because spills happen, especially while underway, the product is UL-listed for half a gallon of water resistance. Seven different finishes mean most boat owners will find one to match their boat’s décor. Countertop Receptacles are available in surface and flushmount models, and in polished chrome, brushed aluminum, brass or nickel, powder-coated black or white, and matte bronze. hubbell-marine.com

Water incursion can damage boats, and it’s important to monitor the bilge so that boat owners are aware of any leaks. The Bilge Boat Monitor System leverages the latest technology and connects to Albin’s smartphone app or website, and requires a SIM card and is CE and FCC certified. The monitoring system tracks bilge water level and battery status. It includes Security vessel positioning with a tracking alarm that activates if the boat is moved outside a defined area. Designed for a marine environment, the robust system is IPX6-rated water resistant. albinpumpmarine.com

Stabilizer

Finding a place to charge devices is easier with the new USB LED Reading Light with Flex Neck and Night Light. A USB port is integrated into the base of this fixture, and the design includes a flexible tube neck that allows for multidirectional focus. Even lighting emits from an acrylic lens and a built-in nightlight feature offers subtle lighting (blue or white LED color options). The fixture operates with a soft-touch switch function: touch one and the nightlight turns on; touch it again and the reading light turns on. salvinco.com

Wave roll while a boat is anchored can cause discomfort. The SWI-TEC Stabilizer reduces boat movements by 50 percent and provides a calmer, steadier stay on board. The damping plates slide down right away and close when there is upward movement, reducing the overall boat movement. It is recommended that two stabilizers are used together on one side of the boat. When not in use, the SWI-TEC Stabilizer is easily dismantled and fits into an included cover for easy storage. swi-tec.us

OCEAN ALEXANDER 90 REVOLUTION

Striking modern design elements, an abundance of amenities and world-class fit and finish make the OA 90R different and unique.

accents. A two-tone hardtop connects to a metallic gray arch that traverses both decks. On the swim platform, a transom beach club sparkles and dazzles invitingly. Its striking lines are bold and its presence formidable. For some owners that is part of the fun. The new and daring styling of the Ocean Alexander 90R is already proving to be popular. The first boat was sold off renderings, and subsequent boats have been purchased following the model’s debut at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show last year.

BEYOND STYLING

IT DOES NOT SEEM that long ago that Ocean Alexander built midsized cruisers and trawlers in the 50-foot range. Many of those boats still ply the waters of the West Coast, a testimony to their reputation for being solidly built. Johnny Chueh runs the company that was founded by his father, Alex, and is responsible for driving the brand forward. His team grew the company from its modest beginnings into one of the premier motoryacht builders in the world. Today, Ocean Alexander models range

from 70 feet up to 155 feet (except for a specialty boat, the 45 Divergence). Distinguished good looks run throughout the builder’s line, but the new Ocean Alexander 90 Revolution offers customers something different and unique. The Ocean Alexander 90R stands out in many ways, starting with an ultra-modern look developed by Evan K. Marshall in collaboration with the factory. A prominent plumb bow and high bulwarks are broken up by massive hull windows with blacked-out

Contemporary styling, high bulwarks, a plumb bow and massive hull windows create an unmistakable profile. In the Skylounge, a helm pod houses triple 24-inch MFDs and an expanse of forward glass provides excellent views.

Distinctive styling is a theme that runs throughout the 90R, but with that style comes useful accommodation spaces and multiple gathering areas that can be connected or separated to suit the occasion. Aft deck seating surrounds a varnished teak table adjacent to sculpted stainless pillars with a recessed overhead that features direct and indirect lighting. Past a small wet bar, a stainless and glass sliding door provides salon access at the touch of a button; alternatively, a teak-covered stairwell leads up. The upper deck includes large seating areas both inside and out, a foldout TV, two bars and plenty of room to socialize. One bar is enclosed in the Skylounge and the other, outside on the aft deck, comes complete with a 24-inch custom “ElectriChef” barbecue made of 316 stainless steel for better durability in the marine environment. The Skylounge has climate-controlled areas, but owners can open it up and let the gentle breezes blow. An alternate Open Bridge configuration shrinks the pilothouse and increases the open area. A Jacuzzi tub or a crane and davits for tender storage on deck are options. The open foredeck has a large forward-facing settee with a teak cocktail table and popup lighting. Opposite this is a massive sunpad that can be used for

overflow seating. With its unobstructed view forward, this elevated perch will be a popular place to congregate. Whether for entertaining or as a spot away from the action, this area is ideal for sitting in the breeze or sun — an awning can cover the area — to read, converse or relax. A few steps down in a separate bow deck, twin Maxwell windlasses connect to anchors in pockets. This bow deck, completely protected by bulwarks, provides dramatic views forward and straight down to the water for folks standing “Titanic” style at the forepeak. A fold-down seat at the aft end would be a nice addition.

HELM & PERFORMANCE

A large center windshield provides Twin MTU 12V2000 good visibility dead ahead, and thin forward mullions barely break diesels, 1,920 hp the angled view across the bow. Corner mullions are substantial, with Price Contact dealer structure there for the hardtop and the adjacent watertight doors on either side. To aid keeping watch, triangular corner windows and small windows in the doors provide increased visibility, but to starboard in the danger zone, care should be taken. A wired controller on a 20-foot cord can be plugged in on the sidedeck here or aft for better visibility while docking. Ocean Alexander testing with optional MTU 16V2000 (2,600 hp) diesels yielded a top speed of 27.2 knots, a speed that makes the 90R the fastest of OA’s larger yachts. At a fast cruise of 22.1 knots, builder testing recorded a fuel burn of 204 gph, 0.11 nmpg, for a range of 292 miles. At a displacement speed of 11 knots, fuel burn during builder testing was 42 gph, or 0.26 nmpg. That yields a range of 714 miles, which demonstrates the versatility and range of the Ocean Alexander 90R and its abilities as a cruiser. Fuel 3,000 gal.

reserved for owners of much larger vessels. Belowdecks, all guest cabins have an en suite head and can be configured in multiple ways, including a second master that provides an additional full-beam master cabin below in addition to the on-deck master. Massive hull windows serve dual purposes. They provide stylish black-out patterns on the external surfaces of the hull and provide light and ambiance in the cabins

The 90R combines eye-catching contemporary styling, a versatile layout, and a variety of quality features below. Because of the windows’ proximity to the sea, Ocean Alexander takes extra steps to ensure their durability. Hull windows are made of the same high-tech glass used on high-speed trains, which is then framed in metal before being bonded to the hull. This glass is designed to withstand the flexing and tremendous air pressure created when trains pass each other in enclosed tunnels with closing speeds of more than 370 mph. It also has the high impact resistance necessary to protect against breaking.

MAIN DECK

On the main deck, the salon — more than 320 square feet of living space between the aft door and the galley — is open and inviting. There are three distinct congregating areas, and enormous side windows and double sliding doors on each side provide access to the sidedecks and twin stairways that lead forward. A long fore and aft counter to starboard contains a sink and a beverage serving center with storage space for wine, champagne and beer. To port is a dining table for eight and a fully appointed galley with all stainless appliances, its own breakfast nook and twin sliding doors. It has the same modern elegance as the salon. This setup provides owners of the Ocean Alexander 90R some flexibility. The galley doors can be left open for casual gatherings, or they can be closed for a more formal

dining experience or to separate the food prep area from the guests during a night of entertaining. Free-standing dining chairs can be moved to create more open space for large parties. The table and the long buffet/bar provide vast serving space. During fair weather the side doors can be opened on both sides for cross ventilation and deck access. This area is well suited for fine dining or for guests enjoying appetizers and cocktails as they mingle in and out of the salon. The interior is elegantly finished with a mix of stone, walnut floors that OA custom makes, two-tone cabinets of ebony and oak, stainless accents and contemporary lighting. Comfortable seating aft connects easily to the dining/serving areas and the aft deck, and features a drop-down TV.

TO THE BEACH

A beach club adjacent to the water is accessed by twin glass doors in the transom. Teak continues from the swim platform into the beach club for continuity. Realizing that the integrity of these doors while underway is important, Ocean Alexander specially designed them to withstand Sea State 5 (13-foot waves) and isolated the area with a watertight bulkhead for added security. The beach club features a wet bar, seating, varnished wood accents, cloth wall panels and a hidden watertight access door into the crew quarters. Fully finished to yacht quality, the crew quarters include a head with a separate shower, three crew beds in two cabins and a crew mess with a TV. Through these quarters is access to the engine room, which is well laid out and has 6 feet, 8 inches of headroom, a stainless diamond-plate sole, heavy-duty grabrails, and well-labeled pumps and manifolds. An internal stairway leads up from the crew/aft area to the portside deck, and twin stairwells lead from the beach club up to the aft deck. The Ocean Alexander 90R combines eye-catching contemporary styling, a versatile layout, and a variety of quality features. Accommodations, social spaces, and serving and gathering areas rival those found on much larger yachts. The open layout is ideal for entertaining and eight plus crew can comfortably sleep aboard. MIKELSON

43 – GENERATION II

Refreshed aesthetics on a proven hull highlight a reboot for the 43 (and the 50). disciple of the idea that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That said, I do believe in iterative improvements to any successful design, so maybe that’s why I enjoyed checking out Mikelson’s reboot of its 43- and 50-foot models. To be fair, the star of the show on test day was the Mikelson 43 – Generation II, which was the one we took out for a spin. However, I did take a tour of the 50 later in the day and wasn’t disappointed. The Mikelson 43 Sportfisher was designed by Tom Fexas for the family-owned company that’s been producing unique fishing boats for nearly 35 years. It first appeared in 1999 and then got a major revamp in 2009 when it was fitted with Zeus pod drives and became the 43Z. The 43 – Gen II was introduced just last year. We tested hull #85 of the overall design and #1 of the refresh. The thing about Mikelson yachts is we can’t really call them sportfishers or cruising yachts, because they’re hybrids or true convertibles. Initially, Dick Peterson and Pat Sullivan established the company (based in San Diego) to design and build the type of boat they wanted for themselves. It had to fish hard but cruise comfortably with

I’VE ALWAYS BEEN A

Mikelson 50 – Generation II

the whole family. Practical met posh, and Mikelson hasn’t looked back in more than three decades.

MIKELSON DIFFERENCE

So what differentiates a Mikelson from other boats on the market? There are a few notable features, starting with the standup engine room below the cockpit sole. With full walkaround access, the engines are easy to maintain from most angles, and the

The reverse sheer at the transom makes backing down on a fish drier and drama-free. heat and vibration of the machinery is kept aft and away from the living spaces. Also, if the need to repower ever arises, this type of access can’t be beaten. Adding to the exceptional use of space below the deck is a cavernous utility room under the galley/salon sole. Batteries and fuel tanks take up some of the space, but there’s plenty left for a freezer or a washer/ dryer. One other feature down there

— nearly standard for all Mikelson owners — is a Seakeeper 6 gyro stabilizer. Fishing can be fatiguing but a stable platform helps. The brand’s design keeps the center of gravity low, so with the weight of freezers, fuel tanks and gyro below the sole, the hull rides smoother. The hull is a cored construction above the waterline and is supported by six longitudinal foam core stringers. The result is strong but light for better performance and fuel economy. Mikelson hulls are built in Taiwan but the rest of the vessel is finished out in California, and that includes motor and pod installation. Another distinguishing feature on Mikelsons is the reverse sheer at the transom that makes backing down on a fish drier and drama-free. Given 13-inch-wide sidedecks, getting from the cockpit to the bow quick and easy. A day head in the cockpit ensures nobody tracks fish guts through the interior. All these clever features make clear how much thought went into designing a practical battlewagon with a touch of luxury. Mikelson hasn’t embraced digital switching, choosing instead to keep things simple, user-friendly and easily fixable in a pinch. The builder has stuck to a 12v system, eschewing the 24v setup many competitors

While the cockpit on the 43 – Generation II is all about fighting fish — a lighted bait tank with windows occupies the transom — the interior is meant for cruising and comfort. The galley and salon encourage passengers to socialize and relax. On the flybridge, two helm stations offer cruising and fishing operation, and twin helm seats and a settee create a conversation pit.

Our quick walkthrough of the Mikelson 50 – Generation II showed more of the same smart thinking we encountered on the 43. The difference is that the 50 is built to order. It’s generally targeted toward the same hybrid-use customer but one who wants more space, a larger salon, three cabins, two full heads and the cockpit day head, and an electrically activated engine room hatch. It’s the same great amenities with a bit more elbowroom. Visit mikelsonyachts. com/m50 for a complete rundown of the M50 – Gen II.

use. Also, exterior surfaces are fairly utilitarian, which minimizes maintenance. When a boat is always ready to go, it ensures more days on the water and fewer at the dock surrounded by workmen.

FISHY FEATURES

Anglers can fish a Mikelson from a fighting chair in the cockpit or from the bow, which has very few tripping hazards. Plenty of good handholds are ready to steady one’s transit in a bouncy seaway. A bait tank with lights and windows is integrated into the transom next to a hinged door that leads onto the swim platform. Forward in the cockpit is a built-in tackle center, and to port and starboard are storage lockers. A seawater wash-down will keep the muck at bay, and a cockpit freshwater shower provides a nice rinse for passengers coming in from a swim. Two drop-in fishboxes are below the sole, while rocket launchers, outriggers and a lazarette freezer are optional. Rod holders abound. Another nod to fishing prowess is a molded staircase (optional, a ladder is standard) that leads from the cockpit to the flybridge, making quick transits from the helm to the cockpit safer. Up top, the flybridge is all Mikelson. Twin Stidd chairs form a command pod that includes three Garmin MFDs embedded into a generously proportioned dash. To port is a handy chart keeper and to starboard is a small companion lounge. Just aft is a round dinette. With the chairs turned aft to face the table, eight people can easily enjoy a cocktail here and take in 360-degree views of the anchorage. Now here’s the kicker. Aft of that round settee is an optional Price (tested) $1.2 million

second helm station that affords a bird’s-eye view of the action in the cockpit. During a back-down during a tournament or a weekend excursion, the captain couldn’t have a better vantage point. This station comes in handy when backing into a slip too.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The Mikelson 43 – Generation II is fitted with two cabins below and a semicustom layout on the main deck in the salon and galley. The galley may be tucked into the forward corner or moved aft to facilitate convenient passing of snacks to the cockpit. The chef will not want for fancy tools. Our test model had Fisher & Paykel refrigeration and a Kenyon three-burner cooktop, both powered by a standard 9 kw Northern Lights genset in the engine room. The interior was fitted out with a matte American cherry finish that exuded a rich feel, and 6 feet, 6 inches of headroom gave the interior a feeling of spaciousness. Anyone led onto a second-gen 43 blindfolded and only introduced to the interior would never know he’s on a tournament-worthy fish boat.

THE REVAMP

Again, if it works, why mess with it, right? However, not wanting to rest on its laurels (or its successful hull forms) Mikelson refreshed both the 43 and the 50 in the past 12 months. The side cabin windows are frameless and larger than before, the solid glass engine air-intake vent was rerouted and given a new profile, and the accent stripes and window elongation paint were eliminated. The ongoing refinements on the 43 – Generation II (the smallest model in the fleet) and the 50 – Generation II add up to softer and sleeker, more modern profiles that remain true to the Mikelson aesthetic. ABYC and NMMA-certified, the company describes itself as a builder that’s family-owned and customer-driven and takes client feedback seriously. With these small tweaks, Mikelson refreshed both models effectively, so let’s hear it for incremental change.

OUT ON THE BAY

The Mikelson 43 – Gen II is powered by

 

twin 550 hp QSB Cummins common-rail diesels coupled to Zeus pod drives. Optional packages include twin engines from Volvo Penta or Caterpillar. When the 43 first switched to pod drives, Mikelson touted a fuel efficiency about 30 percent better than with conventional shaft drives, and that paired with a top speed increase of 15 percent. As usual, the Zeus system allows builders to install smaller, more fuel efficient engines. This makes the boat lighter overall without sacrificing performance and with the added benefit of a shallower draft, so owners can fish skinnier waters. Our test of the 43 and its standard Cummins motors and pod drives tucked into hull tunnels was in light winds on the flat waters of San Diego Bay. We came up to speed with minimal bowrise with the hydraulic trim tabs set to auto. With six people aboard and tanks half full of fuel and water, the 43 – Generation II topped out just shy of 31 knots at wide-open throttle. We found a nice cruising speed at 2500

rpm and nearly 21 knots of boat speed as the Cummins diesels burned a combined 33 gph. At 10 knots and in a fairly calm seaway, the 43 showed a 600-mile range. With 200 gallons of optional extra fuel capacity, a buyer, like many Mikelson owners, can head to Mexico for big fishing tournaments. The nice thing about pod drives is the smooth ride they deliver. The directional thrust makes turns even and drama free as the hull remains stable without digging in or leaning. We spun in our own length using only the wheel, a move that was even easier with the joystick. Docking is a delight with the joystick. Competitive brands in Mikelson’s space include Hatteras, Bertram and Viking, and each builder is known for something unique. Mikelson is known for building practical boats that excel in fishing tournaments but don’t forget the family when it’s time to cruise, entertain or generally relax on the water in complete comfort.

RIVIER A STARTED OUT BUILDING primarily convertible sportfishing boats. In recent years the Australian builder expanded its line to include sedans (SUVs), Sport Yachts, Enclosed Flybridge Cruisers and, now, Sports Motor Yachts. While many fish have been hooked from a Riviera over the years, and some owners use their boat primarily for fishing, many owners enjoy cruising too. To accommodate them, the new Sports Motor Yacht category is designed to facilitate multiple uses. The yachts combine the fishing prowess of a large battlewagon with comfortable spaces for cruising and entertaining. Eager to find out more about their newest category of boats, I headed down to Australia last year for the world debut of the 72 Sports Motor Yacht, the first and largest in this line.

As I approached the new Riviera 72 Sports Motor Yacht, its size and presence made a pronounced impression. Rounded parallelogram windows accent the hull beneath high forward bulwarks that curve gently aft. Matching black-tinted windshields align the main deck and the enclosed flybridge that towers above.

FISH & PLAY

Outriggers that angle into the sky and lack of a swim platform (one is optional) demonstrate the seriousness of its fishing capabilities. The 175-square-foot teak-covered cockpit deck is surrounded by a dozen rod holders, a lighted circulating baitwell with a window, extra tackle storage and twin fish lockers. The chair was not installed yet, but the cockpit sole is reinforced to accommodate two fighting chairs. While well equipped for serious fishing, the cockpit is equally outfitted for entertaining. A console between the twin stairwells that lead to the mezzanine above contains a beverage cooler, twin electric grills and a foldup sink that conceals engine room access in its base. Up the stairs the mezzanine is set up for dining and entertaining. A forward-facing settee has twin teak tables with space between them for convenient entry, but they can be combined to form one long table that can seat 10 people when deck chairs are added. A popup window provides easy pass-through to the galley and is fronted by pivoting barstools below. A portside door leads down to a cabin with a head, storage, an under-over washer/dryer and crew bunks. The proximity to the mezzanine makes this an excellent day head. The engine room, with standing headroom, is entered either from this cabin or the cockpit door beneath the sink. Along the stairway, a well-thought-out hatch accesses the back of the galley garbage bin to allow for discreet trash removal.

PILOTHOUSE

squalls, I made my way up to the Bridge Lounge via the internal stairway for our sea trial. Eight of us sat comfortably here, including Rob Scott, Riviera’s West Coast sales manager; Stephen Milne, Riviera’s director of brand communications; and some international dealers. The first thing I noticed was how easily we all fit in the pilothouse. Riviera’s skipper, Mark, sat in the center. He had the wheel and multiple Garmin MFDs directly ahead. Controls are spread strategically around, including a console to the right with throttles, trim tabs, a joystick, autopilot and wiper actuators. All critical functions are in reach, and items needed regularly are easiest to access. A standard CZone system with multiple access points, including one at the helm, gives users control of temperature, lighting and more throughout the vessel. Scott sat in the companion seat adjacent the helm and I sat forward to starboard, in a seat that is within conversational proximity to the helmsman, provides a great view out the windshield and allows for multiple sitting positions, partially thanks to its angled backrest. Occupants have room to put their feet up or they can face toward the center and join everyone else. The rest of the test crew was seated around the aft settee and its table, all within easy earshot of the helm and with all-around views out the windows. As we got underway it was noticeably quiet, which made it difficult to tell how fast we were going without looking at the gauges. Decibel readings in the pilothouse were well under 68 (the level of normal conversation) even when the yacht reached 34 knots.

PERFORMANCE

Optional twin MAN V12-1900 diesels with V-drives powered our test Riviera 72 Sports Motor Yacht. It was also equipped with the Seatorque BOSS system, which reduces vibration and noise. The system’s shafts are encased in a sealed tube and bathed in oil all the way from the engine couplings to the props. Rubber mounts

The Riviera 72 Sports Motor Yacht provides extraordinary versatility. Combining the luxury accommodations and finish of a motoryacht with sportier performance, aesthetics and serious fishing amenities, this boat will please a variety of buyers. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL 2019  37

The sociability of the Riviera 72 is highlighted by a wide-open salon, flybridge mezzanine seating (bottom middle) and a passthrough window on the main deck mezzanine that connects inside and outside. A fully equipped helm and a full-beam master stateroom will pamper the owners day and night.

inside the vessel and at the strut dampen vibration and allow thrust — all 3,800 hp on this model — to push directly on the vessel rather than pressing back against the engines. Water 225 U.S. gal. On reciprocal runs to counter for current and wind, our top speed Power (standard) Twin MAN V12-1800 averaged 34.2 knots and peaked at an impressive 35.5. Cruising at 27 diesels knots, 2000 rpm and 83 percent load, burned 130 gph for a range of 446 Power (as tested) miles, based on 90 percent fuel capacity. At 10 knots, the vessel showed Twin MAN V12-1900 a range of 1,120 miles, exhibiting its ocean-passaging capabilities. An diesels optional 396-gallon tank, to supplement the 2,378 gallons of standard tankage, would boost range further. Lumpy conditions, an outgoing tide and confused seas helped us find out how the boat handles as we headed outside the Gold Coast Seaway into some nasty-looking rollers. The steadiness and quietude of the 72 Sports MY made it seem like we were going slow, but we were slicing into the seas at 22 knots. Angling down the coast, the yacht moved easily and seemed ready to cruise safely all the way to Sydney despite the conditions. At faster than 25 knots a little spray hit us as the yacht plowed through the biggest rollers, but there was no slamming and it tracked steadily. To test the optional Seakeeper gyro, we slowed to 13 knots and turned so the waves hit us nearly broadside. As the waves started pushing, we could feel the Seakeeper counter the roll and hold us upright. We were running at exactly the wrong angle, broadside to the waves, and the 72 was still steadily moving along and never rolled hard. I took the wheel, throttled Fuel 2,378 gal.

up and made some turns across the wave tops. The handling felt solid despite the 6to 8-foot rollers. I spun it around downwind and it settled in, gently surfing the wave backs at around 18 knots as we headed toward the docks.

LAYOUT & FEATURES

After we cleared the break wall, I went below to look around. High-quality furnishings, supple fabrics and gloss walnut timbers shined throughout. The spacious main salon features twin L-shaped seating/dining areas for eight and a large fully equipped galley aft, which has equal access to the salon and the cockpit. Accommodations include a full-beam master stateroom with a center king berth, a large VIP forward, a twin cabin to port that can be converted to a double, and a bunk room to starboard. The Presidential layout enlarges the master and replaces the bunk cabin with the master head. Arriving at the marina we used the full

steering station on the open aft upper deck to back into the slip. The captain has excellent visibility for docking from here, but it is also a great spot to control the boat during fishing action thanks to its outstanding view of the cockpit below. This station is complete with an EJS system from Twin Disk that drives variable-speed transmissions on both engines as well as hydraulic bow and stern thrusters. The EJS joystick spins, backs and maneuvers the boat eloquently without any jerking or lunging, giving this shaft-driven boat the benefits normally associated with IPS pods. Other amenities include a foredeck crane davit where a large RIB can be cradled along the centerline of the deck. With the tender removed, this converts to a large seating area. Wide sidedecks with raised gunwales and rails provide safe passage, and a portside watertight door amidships connects to the galley, salon and the internal pilothouse staircase.

GOING SOCIAL

The Riviera 72 Sports Motor Yacht has a variety of quality features that make it a capable fishing boat and a proficient cruiser and entertainer. With a lighted baitwell and multiple rod holders, the cockpit is a great space for fighting fish but can just as easily be a dance floor or an alfresco cocktail party spot with fliptop wet bar and grill. The mezzanine has comfortable seating, direct access to the galley and the day head/crew cabin below, and excellent visibility aft toward the fishing action. The foredeck can be used for entertaining; its seating and a dining table create an intimate spot to hang out away from the action. The main salon comfortably seats eight or more. The bridge lounge provides flexibility with seating there and on the open deck aft. Both flybridge areas provide spaces for guests to gather both while the boat is running and after the party has started.

Sometimes, the Hawaiian Islands are not what cruisers expect. To alleviate potential disappointment, here’s the lowdown on a few of the best stops for folks who are island hopping on their own boat. BY CAPT. PAT RAINS

“Land ho!”

The sight of Hawaii’s green peaks piercing the horizon was thrilling, especially after 2,300 miles of chugging at eight knots — 12 days of blue, blue, blue. Mauna Loa blossomed to starboard on our radar for the next couple of hours as we skirted South Point on the Big Island and laid a course straight for the island of Oahu. The sudden appearance of actual scenery kept us enthralled and not far from the binoculars; however, the increasing vessel traffic kept us alert at the helm during our regular watch schedule. Yet we couldn’t stop giggling and fantasizing how great it was going to feel to get the boat secured in a motionless slip and get a really good night’s sleep. “Cruising Hawaii is going to be paradise, but this is what happens when you’re over 60,” we joked. “You can’t wait to get docked.”

Oahu’s west coast is but one spot to see stunning Hawaiian Island scenery.

Aloha Our dear friends, owners of the 57-foot Nordhavn trawler we were on, so far had acquired a good 15,000 miles of boating experience. For them, it was a special accomplishment to arrive in paradise — not on just another cruise ship, but on their own boat. My husband, John, and I had previously taken six different boats to and from Hawaii and around these islands as part of our yacht delivery business. For us, Hawaii is still a familiar reward that’s always worth the effort required to arrive here.

PREVIOUS ARRIVALS

Remembering my first sail to Hawaii when I was young — about 40 years ago — I blush to recall that after 23 days at sea we almost missed the Big Island. That sailboat had no GPS, no sat nav, no radar. The sails were in tatters and the keel had problems. An elderly Navy sextant we’d planned to use had rusted to death in a bilge. So we novice navigators pulled out our plastic Plaths and valiantly plotted our way across the Pacific on noon sites alone. “Land,” we gasped. Sure enough, some

mountain poked above the fog, but it was already behind us; we had almost missed our landfall. By sunset we’d limped into Kealakekua Bay on the leeward side of Hawaii. With not another boat in sight, we dropped the anchor off some black rocks. Before drifting off to sleep, I finished James A. Michener’s “Hawaii,” an epic history that had kept me enthralled on the long ocean crossing. Next morning, I thought I must still be dreaming. A dozen carved antique canoes had surrounded our little sloop. The male paddlers were stringing flowers as they laughed and sang to us, and yodeled toward shore. There, native women in flowing gowns were parading along the palm-covered beach with 10 giant, fierce-faced tikitype statues balanced on their shoulders. We launched our dinghy and went ashore. Turns out the locals were just beginning their annual two-day Hawaiian cultural festival. We learned that those black rocks were actually an ancient holy temple called SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL 2019  41

Pu’uhonua o Hanaunoa, or the City of Refuge. It has since become a national historic park. The heavenly aroma of coffee wafted out to our anchorage of refuge. At this end of our passage, we had no coffee left aboard. During our first foray hiking up the steep jungle path in search of provisions, our noses quickly led us to that heavenly source. Behind a big yellow house, we saw a bunch of men wielding coal shovels. They were local coffee farmers, and with their harvest just completed they were busy shoveling truckloads of beans into the hoppers of their giant roaster oven. There was no sign, but we had found the original Kona Coffee Farmers’ Collective. It smelled so good. Of course, they weren’t set up for visitors to buy cups of coffee, but they kindly demonstrated how the coffee bean ripening, drying and roasting process works. As a welcome-to-Hawaii gift, they gave me a big burlap sack full of their fragrant beans. Mahalo! Today, those Kona Coffee roasting ovens still stand beside the road that winds up from Kealakekua Bay toward the village of Captain Cook. Now, however, the site has expanded. It boasts a welcome sign, a hip Espresso Café, a retail gift shop that will ship bags of beans home and ample parking for tour buses. ARRIVING OAHU

We were lucky to have been able to reserve a slip for the Nordhavn 57 in 2012, because Hawaii had been experiencing a pretty serious slip shortage. The boat’s owners had chosen Oahu because they were “commuter cruisers” and knew they’d need easy access to Honolulu’s air links. During their pre-voyage research, they found that most of the marinas and yacht clubs in Honolulu, Waikiki, Kaneohe and Pearl Harbor were filled to capacity, offering two- and threeyear waiting lists. But remote little Ko’Olina Marina had a few slips available that fit their boat’s length and beam, and depth and power needs. After flying over to check it out in person, the owners grabbed it. All the way across the Pacific, we already had waypoints for the marina as our initial destination. In Hawaiian, the

word “oahu” means a gathering place. As we pulled into our new slip, we noticed many sleek kayaks and a few SUPs. But nobody yodeled to us from antique canoes, no carved gods were trotted out. However, we did get a hearty welcome — Aloha! — from boaters in neighboring slips, and the marina office gave us cards for free drinks at the Marriott resort next door. SLIP SHORTAGE

Remarkably, when Ko’Olina opened in 2000, it was the first new marina built in the islands in more than 30 years. Why? Hawaii’s slip shortage was due in part to Mother Nature and the legislature. Being volcanic, all these islands rise steeply from great depths, leaving only relatively narrow shorelines that are not blessed with an abundance of natural bays, not the kind that are useful for ports, harbors and marinas, anyway. (On Oahu, Pearl Harbor and Honolulu are big exceptions.) During the previous decades of full-throttle development, dozens of coral reefs and miles of coastal habitats had been dredged up and hauled away in order to provide sufficient flat space for hundreds of new resorts and golf courses. That included a few small marinas, too, such as Kailua and Honokohua on the Kona coast of Hawaii, and Kaneohe Lagoon on Oahu. But by 2012, all of Hawaii’s shorelines were being protected by a host of strong new environmental laws at the state and federal levels. Existing harbors had been prohibited from dredging or expanding their docks. What changed? Technology. Spurred by the need for expansion, scientists and engineers figured out how to create space for people and marine life

Not What You Expected?

Many cruising boaters are disappointed by the Hawaiian Islands. Why? First, the three major channels that separate the islands — Kauai, Ka’iwa and Alenuihaha — are often too windy for comfort, making it a bit of a challenge to cross from Oahu to Kauai, or from Maui to the Big Island. Planning to cruise from one island to the next often requires waiting somewhere nearby for a wide enough weather window to get safely across, especially during winter and spring when the trade winds are strongest. NOAA Weather Radio constantly broadcasts the various “channel forecasts” on VHF Channel 1, 3 and 7. (See the accompanying chart with channel designations.) For details, visit prh.noaa.gov/hnl/pages/ nwr.php.  Second, unlike Mexico’s lower Sea of Cortez or British Columbia’s Gulf Islands, the Hawaiian Islands don’t contain an

without damaging the environment, which included savvy new marina-building methods and materials. Finally, some existing marinas were able to expand their breakwaters and docks. Hence the slip shortage was, well, beginning to ease.

abundance of reliable overnight anchorages or recreational marinas. Where there are no anchorages enabling boaters to hop around the islands, there’s nowhere to cruise, so they’re stuck in a slip. And the

KO’OLINA EXCEPTION

slip shortage is still a problem.

The tiny and relatively new Ko’Olina Marina near the southwest corner of Oahu hadn’t been well advertised, probably due to its location: smack next door to a commercial harbor on Barbers Point. In fact, the marina and commercial harbor share part of the same entrance channel; to reach the marina basin, boaters bear northeast, while tugs and a few navy research vessels head straight into the larger Barbers Point Harbor. Also, a resort on the marina’s north side had recently expanded enough to physically engulf the marina property, so no one knew if it might soon close or change hands. Ko’Olina Marina became a good landing zone for us voyagers immediately after our Pacific crossing and for our friends. As commuter cruisers, they took full advantage of the fact it’s only 18 freeway miles to Honolulu International and 25 miles to downtown Waikiki. By the time we arrived, the little resort next door had expanded to 642 acres and included a golf course, pools, shops, lavishly landscaped pedestrian paths between the

Hilo Harbor on the Big Island is where many yachts arrive from the U.S. mainland, but Hilo has only a small anchorage area and no marina, even inside its 1.6-mile tsunami-proof breakwater. Kawaihae village on the Big Island’s northwest coast is currently building a new commercial harbor with two patches of docks for fishing vessels and recreational boats. When complete, this should provide a strategic staging stop for boaters preparing to cross the Alenuihaha, or licking their wounds afterward.

high-rise hotel buildings, one and a half miles of beach, and a variety of restaurants, coffee shops and happy hour bars. Because they were all within walking distance of the boat, the resort next door soon became our go-to place for lunch and dinner. Fish ponds? As soon as I learned that three authentic “fish ponds” had been incorporated into the beach next door, I grabbed my mask, fins and snorkel to check them out. Ancient Hawaiians had excavated the limestone shores in certain places to form shallow depressions with narrow mouths. Fish swam in at high tide to eat bait, and before the tide withdrew the fishermen blocked the exits with nets. Well, I found that these fish ponds were tiny, ideal for children and novice swimmers. But the island of Molokai has huge fish ponds, some a mile long, that fringe its south shore. Our friends had originally planned to make another series of passages toward New Zealand, but the delights of Oahu soon convinced them to stay and cruise the other Hawaiian Islands. And my husband and I were happy to come back and cruise with them several times. THREE BEST PLACES

Absorbing even a fraction of Hawaii’s majesty in one cruising season is impossible. Multiple cruises are required. Based on our experience across many years and trips, here is an itinerary of sorts I recommend, moving from west to east. Summer is the best season to anchor in Hanalei Bay, the beautiful little beach cove on the north shore of Kauai, which is known as the Garden Isle. Hanalei Bay turns into a surf zone in winter, but in summer the anchorage is protected from errant trade winds by a hill to its east that is covered by the Princeville development.

Lahaina is an old whaling village on Maui. Its original pier (top) is dilapidated but worth a visit, and its modern harbor (middle) has 70 side-ties available. In the village, wood carvers work traditionally and a notable banyan tree covers about two-thirds of an acre with its canopy. 44  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL 2019

Molokini is a tropical aquarium in the wild.

Remember the 1959 movie “South Pacific”? Hanalei is where it was filmed. On the east side of Hanalei Bay is the Hanalei River. Boat owners can take their dinghy up the river a couple of miles to visit what locals call the Menehune Fish Pond. The Menehune were a legendary race of mischievous small people — two to three feet tall — who supposedly inhabited these islands before modern Hawaiians arrived. Summer is also the best time to photograph Kauai’s dramatically stunning Na Pali coastline, where 20 miles of knifeblade cliffs and sheer valleys are said to mask the sacred caves of the Menehune. The Na Pali Coast is still held to be sacred, and it’s so rugged that no roads have ever penetrated it. The only way in is the 11-mile Kalalau Trail, which winds among Na Pali’s cliffs. It begins just west of Hanalei Bay. In my youth, I once hiked part of this treacherous trail, but that was in December and I was nearly swept over the edge by blasting wind and rain. Now in summer with boating friends, we sailed close below the sacred cliffs and received the Menehune’s blessings. Everyone has her personal favorites, but I think all U.S. seafarers should visit

sarongs, T-shirts, we cheerfully whetted our whistle in one of the historic whalers’ taverns where many a hearty sailor had done so before us. Lahaina plays a prominent role in Michener’s “Hawaii” story, including the Old Sailors’ Hospital and the Baldwin House.

Molokini Island, about 18 miles southeast of Lahaina and visible on the horizon of the bottom right photo, is a diver’s paradise. Boats must pick up a visitor buoy to moor, but the underwater rewards are worth it.

Lahaina, the 18th-century American whaling port on Maui’s leeward side. Lahaina Light leads visitors to the historic waterfront and tiny Lahaina Harbor, which has only 70 stern ties. We opted to anchor a mile north of the harbor, just outside the breaking reef and beach parks, from where it’s an easy dinghy jaunt to the harbor landing. It’s impossible to miss the gracious old Lahaina Heritage Museum, which is well worth a visit to get one’s bearings. Behind it, the famous Lahaina Banyan Tree stretches its octopus-like limbs out to a circumference of about a quarter of a mile. It shelters a shady meeting park with benches, flowered paths and spots for cultural events. After we dutifully inspected Front Street’s 150-year-old wooden buildings that now house waterfront eateries — seafood, buffalo sliders, shaved ice — and shops full of jewelry, native crafts, Polynesian

Molokini Island is a tiny cone from a volcano that partially collapsed 230,000 years ago. It lies in the calm lee of Maui’s big southern lobe, only 18 miles southeast of Lahaina, so we cruised down and back as an easy daytime excursion. Legends say Molokini is the vanquished rival of the fire goddess Madam Pele, a crescent moon that fell from the sky. Inside Molokini’s crescent we snorkeled for hours off the swim step amid the richest abundance of marine life in the Hawaiian Islands. It’s a tropical aquarium in the wild. Scuba divers marvel at the astoundingly clear visibility — 100 feet straight down to the hard coral bottom of the caldera. In winter, divers can sometimes hear humpback whales singing in the nearby Pailolo Channel as they make their way toward Molokai. Awesome is a word I don’t use lightly, but this place is awesome. Trouble is, nobody can just anchor a boat out here. Molokini is a 77-acre Marine Life Conservation District, so visitors must arrive here early in the day and pick up one of the visitor buoys that are set inside the south wall. Park rules basically say to observe Molokini’s beauty: don’t touch anything and don’t step ashore. Molokini’s survival is kind of a miracle. During World War II the U.S. Navy used the cone for target practice, and later tons of live munitions were repeatedly dumped into the crater and detonated, destroying vast fields of ancient corals. Public outcry finally halted the practice.

Bedding Down

Improve the quality of onboard Z’s with better boat-bed technology. BY ZUZANA PROCHAZKA

+ Sea feature Beds2.indd 48

2/28/19 9:50 AM

Boat beds need to fit into oddly shaped spaces, and wellcoordinated bedding, such as this set from Yacht Bedding, can dress up any stateroom.

If I don’t sleep, nobody sleeps. And if I’m drowsy in the morning after sleeping on an uncomfortable, damp or stinky boat bed, I’m not only unpleasant in the lovely anchorage, I’m less likely to be alert and able to solve problems on my feet underway. Sleep is good. Good sleep is better. Is it time to investigate bed and linen technology? Probably. It can make a difference in a crew’s night … and day. Shape Shifting Beds on boats come in funky shapes. V-berths, tiny crew berths and weird guest berths defy standardization. Boat beds have radiused corners and beveled sides, so they fit against angled hulls. Shannon Baldwin of Yacht Bedding in Huntington Beach, Calif., said that even “standard” marine mattresses don’t share the dimensions of residential twin, full, queen or king beds, which is why they require custom bedding. Boat mattresses differ by thickness too. Builders don’t put household 17-inch-thick mattresses on a boat, not only due to space constraints but also because of their weight. Premium stowage space is often found under berths, so mattresses must be light enough to lift. To help with this, Handcraft Mattress Co. (HMC), which has offices on both coasts, and San Diego’s Mattress Makers offer boat beds with vertical or horizontal hinges. Not only do such features make it easier to lift a section to change the sheets, they make it possible to bend the bed to fit it through narrow doors and companionways. Another issue with mattress thickness is overhead clearance, because boat beds are often squeezed into tight spaces. Combine a mattress, an underlayment, a topper and a pillow and soon one’s head may not fit between the bed and the cabin headliner. Finally, “finger space” is a thing. Anyone who has had to make up a boat bed may have scraped his knuckles against the hull as he tucked in the sheets. Residential beds simply don’t have the tight tolerances of boat beds, so savvy manufacturers take that into account when crafting a custom mattress. Boat-mattress manufacturers need a template from which to work. Some will come out to measure if the boat is nearby. Others supply kits and detailed online instructions about

how to create a template to send them. Pablo Hernandez, CEO of Mattress Makers, said he asks his customers to meaure all sides of the bed at least twice. “Boat beds always seem to be just a little off,” he said.

What’s on the Inside Most production boats have basic polyurethane foam cushions for bedding. Such bedding is fine when it’s new and if the owners mostly just spend the weekend on their boat, but owners who cruise for extended periods will want something better. Some boat manufacturers simply plan on boaters enhancing the bedding after the boat purchase, so they sell boats with inexpensive and firm foam. Boat mattress materials and construction include polyurethane foam, gel memory foam, latex and innersprings. Each has pros and cons. Polyurethane is affordable and widely available but absorbs moisture and breaks down over time, especially under heavier sleepers. Memory foam is temperature sensitive, so it will be soft in warmer climes and harder on boats in cooler cruising grounds. Per Dave Ogle of HMC, powder-coated innersprings are an option but he thinks they’re overkill, because today’s improved materials have all but eliminated spring rust, even in tough boat environments. Hernandez said that over the past five years, natural (vs. synthetic) latex has been trending, because it’s mold and mildew resistant and free from chemical off-gassing, which makes it healthier. However, latex is heavy and some people think it’s hot to sleep on. Manufacturers suggest buyers visit their showroom and test the materials, because custom boat beds cost more than standard versions, and everyone wants to make the right choice. Due to the specialized labor involved, mattress manufacturers charge a premium, which can vary from a few SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL 2019  49

hundred dollars to double the price for a comparably sized home mattress.

What’s on Top Mattresses are made of layers of different kinds of materials. Boat mattress ticking — the outer covering — should be breathable and more resistant to moisture and mildew than the residential variety. Hernandez likes to avoid organic cotton that is susceptible to mold. Instead, he prefers Tencel or lyocell, which is a sustainable fabric regenerated from wood cellulose from sources such as the eucalyptus tree. Tencel is one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics, and it’s durable and sleeps cooler. He uses Tencel in his custom linens as well. Polyester batting wrap is used on the top and bottom of mattresses to provide a breathable layer between one’s body and the foam. It also helps eliminate wrinkles in the ticking that may show through the sheets. Hernandez said trends in batting are toward wool instead of polyester, because the lanolin in wool is naturally antimicrobial. A boat owner who chooses to add an off-the-shelf memory foam topper to an existing boat mattress should keep a couple of things in mind. It should be no more than three inches high, due to height restrictions and the weight. TO THE A topper that is WEB BoatBeds.com (Handcraft unpacked aboard Mattress Co.) will emanate a MattressMakers.com smell that may PerennialsFabrics.com take a few days Sunbrella.com to vent. A topper YachtBedding.com that is unpacked

elsewhere probably can’t be compressed enough to get aboard. A topper that has no outer cover will be difficult to slide on the mattress, because the foam is sticky. A custom topper can alleviate such hassles, but it can erase some of the benefits owners might have paid extra for, including wool batting or natural latex.

What’s Underneath What’s under a mattress is as important as what’s on top of or inside it, because once heat from one’s body reaches the cool bed surface it will condense into moisture, which will eventually turn to stinky mildew. There are a number of ways to combat this. First is simply the material on the bottom of the mattress. HMC adds hospital-grade vinyl to the bottom of the mattress and to the sides that come in contact with the cool fiberglass of the hull. This barrier helps keep the mattress dry. Hernandez said Mattress Makers likes HyperVent, a spun polymer mesh that doesn’t compress and allows air to circulate and moisture to evaporate. This material adds only three-quarters of an inch to the height, can be purchased directly by boaters and can be cut with scissors. It won’t scratch surfaces but will hold up under larger sleepers. It’s lightweight, washable and will likely outlast any mattress. Some manufacturers are now adding wooden slats to create an air space under the bedding cushion. A more elaborate mechanical system is a Froli foundation, whose interlocking springs are made of DuPont’s Hytrel material, are flexible, and can be combined to fit just about any bed

shape and configuration. The modular system snaps together and prevents condensation but also cushions body parts with independent suspension to prevent uncomfortable pressure points.

Design Trends Like it or not, the focal point of any sleeping cabin is the bed. Boat owners can use that to their advantage by accessorizing their way around sketchy joinery and questionable cabin décor with a neatly presented bed and interesting linen choices. That’s why Yacht Bedding offers design services and coordinated packages for buyers who may be design-challenged.

A bed is important but a pillow can be life-changing. Of course, pillows are very personal items, which is why Mattress Makers offers pillows with five different kinds of fill. Latex, memory foam and down pillows are popular, but people whose head tends to stay too warm may want to investigate a buckwheat hull pillow. Filled with the byproduct of milling buckwheat flour, these pillows are known for being cool and breathable. They’re durable, non-toxic and hypoallergenic; some boat owners say they even reduce noises such as hull slap. However, buckwheat hull pillows tend to be very firm.   Regardless of the type of pillow, a pillow cover is an important accessory. Covers go under a pillowcase, have zippers for easy pillow removal and can be washed. They tend to increase the life of a pillow, because they protect it against dust mites and allergens. Of course, nylon and plastic zippers will do better in a marine environment than metal. A good bed starts with a happy head.

Boaters don’t have to give up their adjustable bed, because HMC makes them (below). Hinged mattresses (left), such as one from Yacht Bedding, make it easy to access hidden storage and to move them around tight corners.

Packages include a quilted coverlet, two standard shams, a blanket, a sheet set, and a throw pillow in color and texture combinations that will make anyone look like a design pro. Such coordination can elicit admiration from onboard visitors and may help resale value too. “We have put together our best-selling packages so it’s easy for clients to combine fabrics,” said Baldwin. “All of our items are custom made for each bed and client order. The packages just make it easy to purchase the set in a specific grouping of fabrics from our website.” Some of the companies I spoke to have a library of production boat bed patterns, which may eliminate the need for customers to measure theirs and could make the process faster, but buyers can expect to wait about three weeks for a custom job. Custom sheet sets can refresh a whole stateroom and cost about $250. Ogle said HMC will sew custom sets for designers and boat owners from the fabrics that they themselves supply. “They like to find things online or they are health or eco-conscious, so we offer this sewing service,” he said. Baldwin added that quilted coverlets and duvets are very popular. Mold- and

HMC’s System 6 mattress (top) includes a 3-inch layer of gel foam over a latex layer atop a no-motion pocket coil. Its System 3 innerspring mattress (bottom) includes two layers of cotton padding, the springs, a layer of poly foam and a high-density foam comfort layer.

mildew-resistant fabrics from Sunbrella and Perennials come in a great selection in fade-proof and stain- and mildew-resistant options in many colors and textures. Everyone agrees that nautical themes are popular but neutral colors and a minimalist approach still reign. “We find that less is more,” Hernandez said. Practical and dual-purpose items such as pillows and throws that can be used inside but also on an enclosed flybridge do well, because onboard space is always limited. Last but not least is the overall environment. Fancy fabrics and antimicrobial surfaces only have a fighting chance if the boat is well ventilated overall. “An inexpensive dehumidifier does wonders for a boat that’s closed up for long periods of time,” Baldwin said.

Nap Time Custom mattresses and bedding usually take time to make and they aren’t inexpensive. While more high-tech materials such as Tencel are introduced, old-fashioned go-tos including wool and latex are reintroduced. One thing’s for sure: a bed isn’t just a bed. HMC is even working on an electrically adjustable bed with an actuator that can raise the head or foot sections of the bed. That’s bound to make for a challenging mattress and an upcharge, but what price can be put on sleep? SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL 2019  51

Here’s what you need to know when seeking a loan for a new, or new-to-you, boat. By Heather Steinberger

Reading this one story will not make anyone an expert in the field of marine finance. But reading this story will make people smarter when it comes to securing yacht financing, because we talked to the real experts and elicited their feedback. Their words of wisdom distilled down into 11 key points, which follow. Read on, and then reach out to an expert to help you make the right choices.

RATES VARY

Current percentage rates for marine loans can be as low as the 4s and 5s, or as high as the teens. The age of the boat, the down payment, one’s credit score and the terms of the loan all play into the final rate. Prime can be as low as the 4s, but nonprime can be as high as 14 to 18 percent. “The best rates for marine loans are on boats and yachts up to 15 model years old [2005 and newer] and on higher-dollar loans,” said Peggy Bodenreider, a Newport Beach, Calif.-based regional sales manager for Annapolis, Md.-based Sterling Acceptance. She confirmed that some lenders offer discounts for various benchmarks: • Credit scores of 800 or better. • Shorter-term loans of seven to 12 years rather than 10 to 20 years. • Down payments of 30 percent or more.

2. NO COMPARISON

Rates for real estate loans aren’t connected to marine loans. A common misconception is you can look at real estate rates and assume that boat rates are doing the same thing at the same time. They aren’t. “They’re not the same indexes,” said Michael Bryant, a cofounder of Newport Beach-based Trident Funding, “and they’re driven by volume considerations. Lenders have goals for the year, and they might squeeze their margins or raise their rates to meet those goals. All lenders are in different places, so as a broker, we go where we feel we’ll get the best rates.”

3. GET SPECIALIZED

Marine-lender brokers and dealers are the main sources of boat loans. A specialized broker typically works with 12 to 15 lenders across the country, according to Bryant. You also can get a loan through your dealer, which might have a relationship with four or five lenders. “The National Marine Lenders Association has 61 lender members, 23 of which are regional or national banks and credit unions,” Bodenreider said. “The

balance of lender members are loan origination companies, or loan brokers.”

4. DON’T DESPAIR

While lenders offer their best rates for 800-plus credit scores, lower scores are still workable. This comes with a caveat, Bryant said. Lower scores are acceptable, provided you don’t have a history of late payments. “Lenders look at loans of comparable size and term to see how the applicant has handled high-dollar, long-term credit in the past,” said Bodenreider. “Mortgage loans and other recreational product loans weigh heavily in this category.” Lenders look at credit depth, which means they expect to see a minimum of 60 months of credit history on a minimum of five credit lines, and at least 12 months’ payment history on each one. They’re also checking to make sure you don’t have a history of bankruptcies, tax liens, collection accounts and other types of negative history. All is not lost, however, if you have a credit score in the low 600s, or even the 500s. You’ll have to accept less favorable terms, but boat ownership is still within reach. “Just because you don’t have perfect credit doesn’t mean you can’t finance a boat,” said James Barron, a senior vice president at Bank of the West and its San Ramon, Calif.-based Essex Credit division.

6. PREAPPROVAL

It’s important to get preapproved. With it, you’ll know your buying power before you start looking at boats. You’ll also avoid a financing contingency in your contract, which means the seller or dealer will have confidence in you as a qualified buyer and will have an incentive to meet your price. In addition, you’ll eliminate one unpleasant headache: Finding the perfect boat and then playing the waiting game. “People have this perception that they need to find a boat before they secure a loan,” Bryant said. “They’re underestimating the time it’s going to take to get that financing; it’s more like a mortgage than an auto loan in its complexity.”

A SCORE IS NOT A SCORE

Credit scores can be misleading. “Banks are looking at FICO scores,” Barron said. “The free consumer credit scores given to consumers are VantageScore, not FICO.” The three primary credit-reporting agencies also have different scorecards and ranges. Various versions of the scorecards are designed to weigh the probability of default, based on the loan type. “The lender will use a product designed and customized to the type of loan (you request),” Bodenreider said. “So a credit score for an auto loan may be different than a credit score for a recreational loan or mortgage.”

54  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  APRIL 2019

2/28/19 9:46 AM

GET READY

Advance preparation will speed up the approval process. When you meet with a lender, provide the basic parameters of what you’re hoping to purchase: target size, age and price range. Then provide all the required documentation, including credit score, proof of income and employment history. “What’s interesting to me is that most people don’t give us what we need,” Barron said. “They think of a boat loan like a car loan, but cars are a commodity business. In the marine space, there’s more finesse to it. A boat loan is somewhere in between an auto loan and a home loan in complexity.” If the lender has a completed application package, the decision process will go much more quickly. In fact, it might take less than a day.

7. MONEY MANAGEMENT Lenders look closely at how you manage money. Don’t raise your debt load right before seeking a boat loan, and be sure to pay down or pay off high revolving balances. Also, review a copy of your credit report to make sure it doesn’t include any negative items; if you find misinformation, address it right away. “Lenders will look at your credit card debt and how you manage your money,” Bryant said. “Car loans are easy to get, because lenders are lenient regarding your income-to-debt ratio. Marine lenders are more concerned about your ability to pay.” Then there is liquidity. If you own a business, for example, and it contains the majority of your liquid assets, move a sufficient amount to cover the down payment and a sufficient amount to cover all of your personal payments, including the boat payment, for 12 months. That way, lenders will see that the money is free for your personal use; if they believe it’s necessary to run your business, they’ll be less likely to approve you. Don’t forget to unlock any credit freezes, and be prepared to provide documentation for the source of your down payment. If you’re unclear regarding what items that might include, ask.

9. RAMPED UP DUE DILIGENCE

A boat is a luxury, and therefore lenders exercise extensive due diligence. Lenders are cautious with luxury purchases such as boats and RVs. Unlike cars and homes, they are not necessities. “The boat is considered a recreational, or leisure, purchase,” Bodenreider said. “The lender often will require copies of filed tax returns, current bank/brokerage statements, and other documents to determine income, liquidity and net worth.” Barron agreed, noting, “When we get customer feedback, it’s usually, ‘The paperwork was more complicated than I thought.’”

RISING RATES?

Loan rates might be headed upward, but that’s not a deal-breaker. The Federal Reserve Board increased rates four times in 2018, though interest rates on boat and yacht loans are still quite low. Bodenreider said lenders are expecting the Fed increase rates twice in 2019. “Recreational product loan rates generally move in sync with the Fed changes, so it’s likely we will see boat and yacht loan rates increase up to three-quarters of a percent in 2019,” she said. “A quarter percent rate increase on a 15-year fixed-rate loan only increases the payment $0.13 for every $1,000 — or $13 on a $100,000 loan.”

11. REPRESENTATION

It will serve you well to find the right professional to represent your interests. Whether it’s a loan broker or a staff member at your dealership, be sure you’re comfortable working with that person and are confident in her abilities. After all, you’re trusting her to guard your privacy and your personal financial information, and to provide the services you need and expect. If you’re not sure which representative might be the right fit, make some calls or personal office visits. Getting your questions answered ahead of time can save heartache and even some money down the line, because each prospective borrower, boat purchase and qualification process is both unique and complex. “Just call us and ask, ‘What do I need to do?’” Bryant said. “Regardless of whether or not you decide to use us, we’ll tailor our answers to your situation, give you a good set of guidelines and tell you what you need to know.”

RICH IN HISTORY

Gig Harbor is known as the “Maritime City,” and boaters will find more than history. There’s always something new to try. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP

ONE VISIT TO GIG HARBOR, Wash., is all a visitor needs to understand why the city has been called a maritime village. But a nickname that indicates a sleepy fishing town is more of a tribute than an actual description. To really feel a bit of the history that remains, visit during the first week of June when the community comes together for the Maritime Gig Festival/Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony, which pays tribute to the town’s colorful past and the fishing industry that helped shape it. Known as one of the most picturesque harbors in the Northwest, thanks to its backdrop of Mt. Rainier and idyllic scenery, Gig Harbor is an appealing, relaxing destination with lots to see and do. A few years ago, Smithsonian Magazine named Gig Harbor as one of the top small towns for culture, heritage and charm.

The Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony every June pays tribute to the town’s colorful past.

in the winter of 1925 for Pasco Dorotich, a pioneer Gig Harbor fishing boat owner and skipper. Operated almost exclusively at the Salmon Banks in the San Juan Islands, Shenandoah also made several trips to Alaska in her early days. Up the street, at the Gig Harbor BoatShop, visitors can learn about how to restore boats, watch the workers in action and even participate in boat building and restoration.

NET HISTORY Perhaps the Gig Harbor waterfront’s most distinctive and iconic historical buildings are its netsheds. As early as 1910, netsheds began appearing along the waterfront. Simple structures, many constructed with rough, hand-hewn fir, netsheds were used by local fishermen to store nets and fishing gear. As the town grew, many netsheds disappeared, and today only 17 of them along the western shoreline remain, but Gig Harbor Bay still boasts the largest inventory of historical netsheds on Puget Sound. At the Skansie Visitor & Interpretive Center — once a place of work and refuge for Croatian brothers Anton and Vince and the crew of the commercial purse seine boat Avalon — visitors can pick up a netshed map, and at Ancich Waterfront Park they can view a rehabilitated netshed.

MORE HISTORY

Gig Harbor pays tribute to its fishing roots with sculptures, restored netsheds and the Harbor History Museum.

Harbor History Museum tells the story of the town’s heritage, which encompasses fishing, lumber and agriculture. The museum offers 7,000 square feet of galleries that showcase the rich heritage of Gig Harbor and its surrounding area. Unique artifacts, video kiosks, hands-on exhibits and a small theater bring the history to life. The museum features the 65-foot Shenandoah, a Gig Harbor–based purse seiner built by Skansie Shipbuilding Co.

The community boasts one of the most protected harbors in Puget Sound, with sheltered anchorage over a sand and mud bottom that provides excellent holding. Boating is big here, and visiting boaters will find private marinas and a public boat dock. Gig Harbor Marina and Boatyard offers guest moorage in unoccupied slips. The folks there suggest visitors call ahead for reservations. Guests can take advantage of 30- and 50-amp power, water on the docks, garbage service, restrooms and showers. Next door is Jerisich Dock, a first-come, first-served public dock that offers power, water and restrooms. Further into the harbor is Arabella’s Landing, which offers guest moorage for vessels up to 100 feet, power, water, restrooms and showers. Reservations are suggested.

VIBRANT SEASIDE VILLAGE Sure, there are hints along the waterfront to the village’s quiet days, and downtown does pay tribute to the town’s heritage, but there’s nothing sleepy about it. Downtown is a vibrant destination where commercial and recreational activities, history, and community events all happily collide. Walking throughout the seaside community is easy. Quaint specialty shops are sprinkled along the waterfront and beyond and offer hours of browsing for gifts, home décor, jewelry, apparel, antiques and much more. Arlene and I like to indulge our sweet tooth and visit the many art galleries. In between, we grab some ice cream, a latte or a homemade muffin, or we stop at one of the many restaurants for casual or fine dining. During the summer season — June

through Labor Day — a street trolley runs along the waterfront, which allows visitors to explore other areas of Gig Harbor, including the West Side, home to Uptown Gig Harbor and Point Fosdick Square shopping center. Three vintagestyle trolleys on wheels have been outfitted for the service, and the trolley conductors wear special uniforms and announce many of the stops the old-fashioned way over a public address system, to complete the nostalgic experience. The trolley runs every 30 minutes and can be ridden all day for one dollar.

TO DO “You never need to wonder if there is something going on in Gig Harbor,” said Karen Scott, tourism and communications director for the city of Gig Harbor. “There’s always something fun to do here.” The spring and fall seasons each include unique events, such as the blessing of the fishing fleet, a classic boat show, fun runs, a beer festival and a dog event. Summer brings outdoor movies and music concerts, several festivals, a farmer’s market and wine tasting. Winter includes a lighted boat parade that circles the harbor and a

What’s in a Name? During a heavy storm in 1840, Capt. Charles Wilkes, an American naval officer and leader of the U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838–1842 (commonly known as the Wilkes Expedition), brought the captain’s gig, a small boat, into the harbor for protection. In the publication of Wilkes’ 1841 map of the Oregon Territory, he named the sheltered bay Gig Harbor.

First Settlers In 1867, Sam Jerisich, Peter Goldsmith and John Farrague were fishing in Puget Sound when bad weather prompted them to seek shelter in Gig Harbor. They liked what they saw and decided to make it their home, becoming the first Europeans to settle in the harbor. Also living in the harbor were Native American people in a village at the head of the bay.

Heritage markers along the waterfront identify 18 sites of significance. A selfguided waterfront history walk takes participants to 43 local points of interest, mostly of historical buildings. A printed guide includes a map and the history of each location and is available at the Skansie Information and Interpretive Center. After working up an appetite during a walk of the harbor, we like to enhance the experience at one of the community’s one-of-a-kind restaurants. Located in the Gig Harbor Marina is JW Trolley. Deciding between its 7 Seas beer-battered cod and chips, lobster rolls, and apple cider pulled pork is never easy. Owners Omar and Chamber Morales enjoy taking classic dishes and adding their own twist. Take it to go or dine alfresco at the picnic tables in the grassy area next to the converted trolley. A Gig Harbor visit isn’t complete without a visit to the iconic Tides Tavern for a delicious house-made lunch or dinner. Once a general store that opened in 1973, The Tides, as it’s known locally, offers indoor and outdoor waterfront dining. Brix 25 features homemade pasta, hand-cut steaks and a fantastic wine list. Reservations are recommended for dinner service. Diners have the choice to enjoy a meal outdoors or inside, where the exhibition-style kitchen provides a view of the handcrafted cooking. Down the street Millville Pizza Co. specializes in wood-fired pizza whose crust and sauce are created from scratch. Guests can watch their pizza being cooked in the Italian-stone wood-fired oven.

MEET PETER CRIM Executive director at the Wind and Oar Boat School in Milwaukie, Ore.

PETER CRIM GREW UP SAILING the coast of southern New England. He learned about wooden boats during his time in Maine where he spent a semester at the WoodenBoat School. Upon return to Portland, he wanted to spread his appreciation for building wooden boats to others, so he founded the Wind & Oar Boat School (windandoar.org) in June 2011.

can’t. They require care, almost nurturing, to survive and the wood leaves a pleasing tactile sensation when one touches it. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using wood to build boats? People who build wooden boats do it for the creative experience of participating in a process. Each step offers a challenge, from interpreting and lofting a drawing, converting it to full-size patterns, and testing one’s skills with tools that have been around for hundreds of years. Also, there is no such thing as a perfect boat, so each one is different because the boat builder was required to adapt to changes and imperfections in the process or materials. The measure of a boat builder’s craftsmanship is in how well that person carries out the adapting. Hence, the advantage is in the satisfaction the building process provides. The disadvantage is that it takes a long time compared to building with other materials and requires more care. What is your favorite historical boat? I’m partial to the Whitehall because of its history as a working boat in northeast harbors in the 19th century. In addition, it’s a beautiful boat and we’ve built two of them in our high school classes.

Peter Crim, the founder of the Wind & Oar Boat School, rows one of the school’s student-built launches.

SEA: How did the Wind & Oar Boat School get started? PC: In 2009, I connected with the owner of a design build firm because of our shared interest in boats. He offered me a job in his firm but because of the economy, by 2010 he couldn’t afford to keep me on. At that point, I decided to pursue my long-held dream that combined my passion for education with my love of wooden boats. I went through the catalog for the Wooden Boat School and selected a number of classes that would give me broad experience in boat building. After spending the summer at the school in Maine, I returned to Oregon feeling as if I’d discovered what my life’s mission should be. My wife, Jann, and I set out to start something new and

combining her interest in education with my own, we developed programs centered on the burgeoning focus on STEAM education using boat building as the delivery vehicle. We embed them in school curriculums from grades 5 through 12 and now serve around 500 students a year. Why are wooden boats so romanticized by boaters? Wooden boats remind us of an era of craftsmanship when form and function combined to please the eye and provide top performance. In some racing classes, there are still wooden boats that compete successfully with boats built of modern materials. Wooden boats also connect us to nature in a way boats of other materials

What is the most complex boat that your school has built? Two boats come to mind. The first really complex boat was a Francois Vivier-designed, Ebihen 16 sailboat. It had foamed floatation compartments, a motor well, seawater ballast tanks, and a number of specially made bronze fittings. It was, however, of glued lap construction and CNC’d planks from the designer’s files, which made the basic hull relatively simple to construct. A much more complex hull was the Herreshoff Columbia Dinghy, which was traditionally built using the Herreshoff method and had 10 planks per side on an 11-and-a-half-foot boat. How long does it take on average to complete a boat? We allow 25-30 hours of instruction time when building the skiff we use with elementary school and middle school

students. For high school programs, it takes 350 to 400 hours to build the rowing boats. How are the boats used after completion? The elementary and middle school boats are usually used for fundraising by the parent-teacher organizations. They are often the funders of the programs. At the high school level, we solicit a sponsor for the boat before we begin and that person becomes the boat’s owner. We have been fortunate to have the CEOs of companies like Daimler Trucks, Columbia Sportswear, PGE, and others step up to sponsor boats.

What’s next for the Wind & Oar boat school? We are in the middle of moving our shop to a larger space that we will share with a complementary nonprofit called Girls Build. We plan to expand in-house activities to offer summer camps, adult programming, and community access to our programs. What do some of your alumni go on to do? Most of our “alumni” go on to more schooling, hopefully inspired with stronger self-confidence and a sense that they can succeed.

BOAT SHOW TIME

For the 46th time, the Newport Boat Show brings the boating community and the boating industry together. BEGINNING EARLY THIS MONTH, FOLKS who frequent the Lido Marina Village area of Newport Harbor will notice a change. Boats that regularly occupy the docks at the Village will move out and new docks will appear. The

marina will grow and temporary docks will extend into the turning basin. As mid-April becomes late April, a slew of boats will move into the newly transformed marina — not the boats that moved out at the beginning of the month, however. No, these are new and brokerage boats from many of Southern California’s best yacht dealers and brokerages. The 46th Newport Boat Show will occupy Lido Marina Village from April 25–28 and bring more than 200 boats and boating gear and accessories to this quiet corner of Newport Harbor. While the in-water portion of the show is the biggest zone at NBS, it’s not the only zone. Think of the show as being three zones, each able to stand on its own but also an integral part of the whole. SEAMAGAZINE.COM APRIL 2019

Before visitors even get to the ticket booth, they can experience a bit of boat show atmosphere. On Via Oporto, the cobblestone street that runs through the Village, attendees get their first glimpse of the show. Here, they can find dinghies, trailerable boats, boat covers, bed linens, yacht services and more. And if the mood to shop for clothes, home décor and beauty products strikes, the shops at newly renovated Lido Marina Village are available. And we’re pretty sure they’ll welcome walk-ins. Typically, food trucks take advantage of the crowd and set up to sate boat show attendees after they’ve spent a few hours on the docks. Those are in addition to the handful of permanent restaurants on site, serving organic farm-to-table fare, Japanese cuisine, local fish, craft beer and more.

CA-2

Through a number of walkways off Via Oporto — past more shops, most of which are new in the past two years — is the Boardwalk portion of the show. Visitors can reach Zone 2 without a ticket to the show but won’t be able to get down any of the ramps to the water. Normally, the booths in this zone are occupied by marine finance and insurance companies, vessel service providers, on-the-water towing services, accessory manufacturers and/or dealers, marina representatives and a boat personalization company called Welcome Aboard. The folks there will put a boat’s name on a wide variety of onboard items, including welcome mats, hats, shirts, life rings, can cozies, towels and many others. A couple of the permanent restaurants have a view of the show from the Boardwalk, in case anyone needs a drink and a nosh before plunging into the thick of the show.

A short walk down one of the ramps takes attendees to the docks where more than 200 boats await in a floating oasis of fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Boats aren’t the only attraction on the docks, however. More marine finance and insurance companies have booths here. Manufacturers of marine bedding, captain’s chairs and furniture occupy booths. Boatyards, electronics distributors, and lift and davit companies are present. And they’re typically in nicely covered tents, so anyone who needs a break from the sun can stop in and talk shop with well-versed industry insiders.   Laid out in a rectangular pattern, with inner docks that stretch across to connect the nearest and farthest docks, the in-water portion of the show does to human beings what a walk through the neighborhood does to dogs: forces them to stop at every opportunity in an overload of sensory input. While humans are far less likely to leave their mark at every stop, they will stop, stare and step aboard with frequency. From 25- to 30-foot models by Ranger Tugs, Boston Whaler and Everglades to 60-foot and longer yachts from the likes of Ocean Alexander, Maritimo, Hampton, Horizon and Princess, boats of all sizes,

designs and capabilities will be in the water. In between are 35-, 40-, 45- and 50-foot sportfishers, trawlers, cruisers, center consoles, dayboats, motoryachts, flybridge yachts and more. And those are just the powerboats. The show always has a selection of sailboats on display too — their masts, festooned with flags, are usually the first things people spot from afar. Combined, the three zones of the Newport Boat Show offer service, coverage, protection, moorage, accessories, loans, furniture, electronics, fractional ownership and more. The essentials of boat ownership are on display and readily available once again — for the 46th year — for four days in Newport Harbor.

ASK A BROKER

BROKERAGE ADVICE

APRIL’S QUESTION:

What are the parameters for deducting the interest on a boat loan as a second home mortgage deduction? INTERNAL REVENUE CODE (IRC) section 163(h)(2) states that a taxpayer may deduct any qualified interest on a qualified residence. Qualified residences are defined as a principal residence (e.g., a primary home) and one other residence (including second homes) owned by the taxpayer for the purpose of deductibility for the tax year. IRC section 163(h)(3) defines qualified residence interest as any interest paid or accrued during the tax year on acquisition or home equity indebtedness with respect to any qualified residence of the taxpayer. According to IRC section 163(h)(4), a boat will be considered a qualified residence if it is one of the two residences chosen by the taxpayer for purposes of deductibility in the tax year. A qualified residence must have basic living accommodations including sleeping space (berth), a toilet (head), and cooking

facilities (galley). If the boat is also chartered, the taxpayer will have to use the boat for personal purposes for either more than 14 days or 10 percent of the number of days during the year the boat was actually rented, to qualify for the interest deduction in accordance with IRC section 280A(d)(1). Form 1098, issued by lenders, is not necessary in order to claim the qualified interest deduction. In accordance with IRS instructions for Schedule A, form 1040, if the taxpayer does not receive form 1098, deductible mortgage interest should be reported in line 11 instead of line 10 on Schedule A. Borrowing against an unencumbered home to purchase a “second home boat” has limitations. Home mortgage interest deduction is limited to interest paid on mortgage debt used to purchase or improve a residence, or to refinance the

remaining balance on a purchase or improvement. If the money isn’t used for the home, the interest expense does not qualify for the deduction. Interest paid on a home equity loan to buy a boat also may not be deductible. Home mortgage interest deduction is limited to interest paid on home equity loans up to $100,000. By using a home equity loan, you may limit the amount of interest that is deductible, if a boat loan balance exceeds $100,000. Borrowing against a stock portfolio to purchase a boat creates complications in regard to interest deductibility. Second home mortgage interest deduction is limited to interest paid on second homes that are secured by that second home. A written collateral agreement (security agreement) from a broker indicating the boat as collateral is something brokers are not inclined to provide. * Estimated APR (Annual Percentage Rate) based on 5 year loan term; individual rate may vary based on loan amount, loan term, vehicle use, model year, and type of boat. Subject to consumer loan program requirements and credit approval. Rates and terms may vary with market conditions and are subject to change without notice. Certain fees, closing costs, and restrictions may apply. APR applied to the loan is the APR in effect on the date the application is received and is valid until 30 days after loan approval. APRs may vary with loan term. Boat must be 1999 model year or newer; for boat model year 1999 to 2008, add .25% to above rate. Maximum loan term based on loan amount. Maximum loan amount is calculated using an advance percentage determined by FICO score and multiplied by NADA base wholesale value with adds; if not listed in NADA, then multiplied by 80% of BUC low retail value. Other rates with different loan terms are available. See our website for rates and terms for financing liveaboards and loan amounts below $25,000. Example of a recreational use boat loan: A $65,000 loan for 5 years with an APR of 4.59% has 60 monthly payments of $1,214.46 each. Member FDIC. Equal Housing Lender.

When you create a whole category, you’re allowed to reinvent it. At Bertram, we’ve got plenty of history. We took sportfishing to uncharted waters, introduced the first production deep-vee hull, and created the large offshore “battlewagon” category. But the story of Bertram is one about never looking back. Which is why we’re introducing the Bertram 61, a new leader in its class. Though to be fair to the rest of the class, it’s really in a category of its own. The new 61 is unmistakably Bertram, and undeniably original. And those sharp, clean lines are just the beginning. Get ready to experience performance, durability and comfort like nothing else on the water. In true Bertram fashion, we took every detail, and cranked it up to 11. That means rugged infused vinylester construction, a modern deep-vee hull, 1925MHP CAT diesel engines, a panoramic salon windshield, Octoplex digital switching, a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, the finest appliances and components, and all of it comes standard. The Bertram 61 is like nothing that’s come before it. It’s hard to admit, but not even another Bertram comes close. We’re proud of our past, but when you’re a true original, you can’t be afraid to write a completely new chapter.
