GOODBYE, 2018 HAPPY HOLIDAYS, EVERYONE. ALL of us here

at Sea hope your plans include time for family and friends, whether that’s aboard a boat or in the confines of a cozy family room near a crackling fire. The six weeks from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day are a sprint, so taking time to slow down and enjoy the season is important, if difficult. While this is definitely family season, it’s also gift-giving season, and to that end we have compiled our annual gift guide for boaters. Beginning on page 36, our gift guide presents 30 items that should be of interest to boat owners and their crew. The items cost anywhere from $10 to $10,000 — that one might be an “own gift” — and include books, boat shoes, sunglasses, watches and much more. With a little imagination, our 30 suggestions can lead to dozens more. I’ll consider our mission accomplished if a couple of people out there read our story, jump online to look at one of the items or find something similar, and then look at their watch and say, “Where did the last three hours go?” We have fun putting the guide together, though thinking about the holidays in June is far too early for such things. Our hope is that you enjoy viewing the guide as much as we 6

did compiling it. On the family front, our cruising feature this month, starting on page 30, might give you some ideas about how to extend family time well beyond the holidays. A couple of seasoned boaters who own a 50-plus-footer decided to take their in-laws on a cruise of the San Juan Islands, but to do it they needed a bigger boat. After a bit of searching and some help from a charter professional, they found the right boat for the job. So mom and dad, daughter and grandson, son-in-law and son-in-law’s parents spent a week cruising, sightseeing and getting to know one another. It seemed like a good story for this particular issue. So there you have it. We’re putting a bow on 2018 with a bit of family fun and adventure and a guide for surprising the loved ones in your life with thoughtful gifts. Oh, and a couple of sea trials: one nearly 60 mph sportboat (p. 20) and one 63-footer (p. 24) from a Down Under builder with heritage and a racing lineage.

Lead Boat // HCB 65 Estrella

TITLE HOLDER

The biggest center console on the market is outboard powered and yacht-like? INCE 2015, THE OWNER of the title “world’s largest outboard-powered boat” was the HydraSports Custom Boats 53 Sueños. No more. Instead of incrementally besting its stable mate, the HCB 65 Estrella blows it away by a whopping 12 feet LOA. Viewed by the Sueños’ side, the Estrella positively dwarfs it, thanks to its massive 16-foot beam. Powered by five Seven Marine 627 outboards — 3,135 hp total — it’s more sports car than pokey giant center console, and HCB estimates it will reach 52 knots. These outboards are based on the Cadillac CTS-V engine — Seven is now owned by Volvo Penta — and cost about $100,000 apiece, rigged, so this boat is not for the faint of wallet. Depending on options ordered, the 65 Estrella starts at around $3 million. For passenger comfort in lumpy sea conditions, the Estrella features a Seakeeper gyro stabilization system, and it has a joystick-controlled bow thruster to help every skipper look like a hero when docking. Triple 22-inch Garmin displays create a glass cockpit, and for long-range expeditions, the boat can be outfitted with 1,800 gallons of fuel capacity. Belowdecks, the Estrella is more yacht than center console. Its woodadorned cabin features eight feet of headroom and can sleep five. The head compartment comes complete with an enclosed shower large enough to invite company — to save water, of course. The entire yacht is a state-of-the-art creation but options include some old-school touches such as acres (seemingly) of teak on the deck, tabletops and gunwales. Well suited for entertaining, the Estrella features three dining areas. Amidships, the three helm seats can spin 180 degrees to face the second row of seating, and a large table rises electronically between the rows to facilitate dining under the hardtop. Another table at the bow rises up from the deck in the U-lounge, and a third dining table is in the cabin. In front of the console are two luxurious chaise lounges; mezzanine seating is aft. —Alan Jones  HCB Yachts, hcbyachts.com

Border Requirement

the Border (Pacific Northwest regional section), is excellent — except for one error: the age at which a child needs a passport rather than a birth certificate when entering the U.S. from Canada by boat. On July 26 we came through Customs at Friday Harbor Marina on our way back from Victoria, B.C. The Customs agent was quite clear: my 15-year-old granddaughter needed a passport and stated that a birth certificate was good only through 14 years of age. The Customs agent let her back into the States, but I thought your readers might want to know of this requirement. DEANE HISLOP’S ARTICLE, CROSSING

A schooner-style hull design creates an overhang at the bow and stern. Sinot used the aft overhang for a stern lounge with three sofas — two of which are aligned in a cinemastyle arrangement — and a table and chairs for cards or board games. THE PACIFIC COAST OF Panama forms a giant “S” tipped on its back (NGA chart #21033).

Within these sinuous 1,000 miles of shoreline, recreational boaters enjoy some of the world’s most prolific sportfishing near a few comfy marinas, fishing resorts and lodges. In addition, dozens of exotic islands and jungle coves are ideal for tropical snorkeling, surfing and immersion in nature. Whether you cruise your own boat down to Panama or fly down and go out on a charter boat, this quick guide will help you plan to enjoy the marvelous Pacific side of Panama. The best time of year for boaters to visit Panama is from mid-November through early May, which is considered the “dry season.” Even though geographically all of Panama is safely south of the Eastern Pacific’s hurricane genesis zone, summer’s “wet season” can bring torrential rainfall and lightning strikes to these coastal waters. To simplify the geography, I’ve divided this 1,000-mile coastline into its three uniquely different cruising grounds: 1. The Chiriqui Gulf 2. The Coiba and Montijo region 3. The northern Bay of Panama The first two regions are covered on NGA chart #21580, but NGA charts #21601 and #21605 are required to cover the third. All three cruising grounds offer world-class tropical fishing — dorado, marlin, rooster fish, yellowfin tuna and two dozen other species — and are stuffed with interesting destinations for boaters.

12

This sparsely populated bay spreads 70 nautical miles east to west, from the narrow Burica Peninsula to the Boca del Toro estuary. It encompasses rustic Puerto Armuelles (simple port clearance for oceangoing yachts), the prolific Hannibal Bank 50 miles out on the edge of the continental shelf, and two closer island groups — the Partidas and the Secas — that are spectacular national marine parks. Boca Chica is the main hub for recreational boating, but it’s just a rustic village at the end of a jungle road, sheltered across a narrow channel (60-foot overhead cable) from massive Isla Boca Brava. A small boatyard and gas dock are about the only yacht services along the anchoring channel popular with sail cruisers. But a dozen small sportfishing lodges serve anglers who fly down from Panama City and David, then go out with the resort’s local guides on a variety of day charters. Besides a few covered 22-foot pangas with four huge outboards, I see mostly 28- to 36-foot center consoles and some larger Bertram types with tuna towers. Panama Big Game Fishing Club on Isla Boca Brava is one of the highest rated for fishing quality and its gorgeous lodge. Club personnel will pick up visitors who fly down, on Boca Chica’s municipal pier. However, the group is expanding its charter docks on the northeast side of Isla Boca Brava to accommodate visiting yachts to 86 feet, and it plans to open a diesel dock this month (December 2018). Ten miles out from Boca Chica and tucked into beach coves on Isla Parida is Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge and the tiny Lost Paradise Hotel. Both are on solar and generator power but a bit closer to the offshore action. The Islas Partida, Bolanos and Gamaz groups have popular snorkeling spots with overnight anchorages in settled weather. Paradise Fishing Lodge is a secondary hub in the Chiriqui Gulf that overlooks the

MEXICO REPORT eastern shores of the Boca del Toro estuary — not to be confused with the Caribbean’s Bocas (plural) del Toro. Paradise Fishing Lodge provides closer access to the Inner and Outer Silva Islands, Islas Brincano and Uva, as well as 20 miles of pristine riverine estuaries.

COIBA & MONTIJO

Coiba is Panama’s largest island, 25 nautical miles north to southeast and rising to 1,372 feet. It’s the core of the seven-island Coiba National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because a prison colony was housed on Isla Coiba until 2005, the whole island remained pristine jungle, which allowed 1,979 exotic species to flourish, including endemic agouti and flocks of scarlet macaws. Boaters arriving on their own boat should hail “Coiba ranger station” on VHF Channel 16 or 22 and arrange to buy an ANAM one-day park permit by anchoring temporarily off Punta Machete on the island’s

northeast corner. The permit allows visitors to fish for 24 hours, come ashore to hike to the waterfalls and anchor at any of a dozen great spots around Coiba Island. Otherwise, 12 miles northeast of Coiba is Bahia Honda, a well-protected bay with free anchoring and a village with a fuel dock, groceries and a seasonal fishing lodge. About 25 miles east of Coiba, the elongated 15-mile Cebaco Island almost blocks the mouth of Montijo Bay. Cebaco Bay Sportfishing Club is tucked into Caleta Cayman on the southwest side of this island. Its 110-foot two-story mother ship, Cebaco Bay, operates as a floating barracks and dining hall for its fleet of fly-in charter sport anglers. However, the club usually has extra diesel on board and sells it to visiting yachts and lets them dock alongside for the night. Hail “Cebaco Bay” on VHF Channel 6. Montijo Bay is a broad and circuitous river estuary bursting with mangrove species. It is great to explore in winter months but not in summer when it is often flooded.

PANAMA BAY

From Cebaco, the next good cruising and fishing grounds are in Panama Bay’s northwestern quadrant, 150 miles around the Azuero Peninsula from Cebaco. Vista Mar Marina opened in 2017 with 125 full-service slips to 200 feet and a 1,200foot megayacht pier, all inside an exterior breakwater. It has gas, diesel, restaurants, a chandler, groceries, golf, an airport, a helipad, customs and immigration offices, and more. Only 40 miles from the Panama Canal, Vista Mar Marina safely separates nautical tourism from overly close encounters with commercial ship traffic. The Perlas Islands, 50 miles east of Vista Mar Marina, are the real jewels of Panama Bay. This cluster of 200 large and small islands (600 square miles) provides at least 100 anchoring spots with blazingly white sand beaches draped by coconut palms and coral diving reefs. All the Perlas are a national park preserve, so only a few of the islands are populated.

Isla Contadora is the most populated, 300 residents, and it has a daily ferry from Balboa, a cruise ship dock, a tiny airport and a dozen hotels that range from posh to hippie hostel. The best yacht anchorage at Contadora Island is off its south shore. Two small marinas in the Perlas are at Pedro Gonzales Island (La Marina Peninsula, 46 slips) and on Isla Viveros (Mara’naa Marina, 10 slips and a diesel dock). The rest of the Perlas are pristine jungle. Only five miles from the Panama Canal sea buoy, Las Flores village on tiny Taboga Island has been populated since 1515. French canal builders established a hospital here for yellow-fever victims, and Paul Gauguin was among the survivors. Today boaters anchor off Las Flores and hop the 20-minute ferry into Balboa to begin their paperwork for transiting the canal.

THE EXPERTS

Even if your boat likely won’t face the worst of winter conditions, you should still prep it accordingly.

BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES Prepare the boat for winter storms. BY DEANE HISLOP

WE’VE ALL BEEN ROUSED in the middle of the night by window-rattling wind only to lie wide awake and worry about how our boat is surviving the storm. We toss and turn, wondering if we made sure the automatic bilge pump was working or worrying about that tarp we meant to secure properly but never did. And if it’s freezing, did we drain the freshwater lines properly or shut the through-hulls?

While we like to think our mild West Coast winters mean we don’t really need to decommission our boat, there are always times when winter sneaks in, and it is definitely better to be safe than sorry. One way to keep snuggled under the covers on stormy nights is to make sure we’re prepared for the worst that winter can offer. Here are some helpful hints to assure a good night’s sleep, no matter what the weather. • Replace worn docklines with a half-inch line, minimum, for vessels less than 40 feet and 5/8-inch line for vessels larger than 40 feet. Leave an extra line on board, so the boat can be retied if necessary. • Tie the vessel securely in its slip using only the cleats for its slip. Besides bow and stern lines, I suggest a spring line be run forward and one run aft, to keep the vessel

from coming into contact with the dock. Do not tie across the dock to another cleat, because it can be a trip hazard for crew and other tenants. • Check that the cockpit drain hoses are in good condition and properly clamped to their fittings. • Secure any dock box lids. • Remove or secure Bimini tops, dodgers and any other canvas covers that may blow off the boat. • On sailboats, secure sail covers, tie halyards away from the mast, and remove and stow the furling jib. • Secure the dinghy, on board if possible. • Close unused through-hulls and winterize belowdecks. • Change oil and filters on the engine and generator. Acids build up quickly in engine oil and can damage vital engine parts.

• Fill fuel tanks and add an approved fuel stabilizer for your engine’s fuel type. Doing so will prevent condensation and slow the oxidation process. Add a growth inhibitor to diesel fuel. • Manually lift the float switch on any automatic bilge pump, to check that it’s operating correctly. • Drain and rinse the holding tank with fresh water. • Pour a cup or so of potable antifreeze into the toilet and pump the head to make sure the antifreeze gets distributed through the system. • Remove valuable personal items and equipment. Lock up the dinghy, outboard, doors and hatches. • In case of power loss to the docks, you may want to emphasize antifreeze protection, battery condition, and/or hire a Boat Watch service to monitor onboard systems.

When it comes to boat heat, try the following: • Inspect the shore cord plug and make any necessary repairs. • Let the marina office know if your power box receptacle needs attention. Shore cords must match the breakers on the dock. • Electric heaters and dehumidifiers should be marine grade and UL approved, with automatic shutoff switches. • A controlling thermostat on the heater will help save electricity. • Unattended diesel furnace heating of a vessel is not recommended, since the heater may clog at low operating temperatures and fill the vessel with soot and possibly create a fire hazard. Finally, don’t just forget about your boat over the winter. It’s a good idea to stop by the marina once a week and make sure everything is just as you left it: safe, secure and smelling fresh.

GRINDING GRID’S GEARS

Wasted Summer IN AUGUST “BILL” CALLS me

to ask advice. The Evinrude ETEC on the boat he bought 13 years ago wasn’t running right in May — the boat had sunk twice over the years due to a faulty automatic bilge pump; both times I handled the engine repairs — so he took it to the selling dealer for repair. This is an engine I’ve been servicing for roughly 10 years. Every week he called and every week the service manager told him they’d get to it “this week.” I told him to get in the manager’s face. Finally, in August, Bill goes up there and gets his boat — fresh bottom paint and a new battery ($508) — and news that the engine needs a new EMM ($2,800). Having left the dealer with no paperwork showing the EMM is actually dead, he heads home but takes a 10-mile detour and stops by an independent, who used to work for the dealer and who I don’t hold in high regard. Bill leaves it there, and after a few weeks of “Is my boat ready?” the independent calls back to say he did a compression test (OK), and it needs an EMM. The last time we talked I told him to get a printout showing why it needed an EMM. Mr. Independent said his printout was of such poor quality he couldn’t even read it himself, but his computer told him it needed an EMM. Note: the program can’t tell the operator the engine needs an EMM. Combinations of faults appear that, if uncorrectable via the program’s procedures, will tell you it’s possible you need to replace the EMM. So Bill leaves the independent’s place and heads home but makes a 40-mile detour to an Evinrude dealer who posts huge signs that say he won’t work on anything more than 15 years old, and his rates go up $10/hour for every 5 years old the engine is. Mr. Dealer tells Bill that he performed another compression check, and a computer diagnosis says he needs a new EMM — and no, he can’t have a printout because it’s proprietary! I have listened twice to these tales of woe. Politely. The first time I told him to

get a copy of the printout and I’d look at it for him. This time I told him that the first two mechanics were child’s play compared to #3. And why call me? If I had done something wrong he knows I would have stood behind it, even two years later. “Well, it wasn’t running right and I thought you’d gone beyond your level of expertise.” (The Peter Principle?) I said,

“Bill, I hope this works out for you with Mr. Dealer and your engine. I told you what you needed and you elected to do otherwise, yet you call me for advice how to deal with other dealers? You have used the whole summer taking your boat to three dealers — the boat I took care of the instant you called — many times at no charge. Call them for advice.” And I hung up.

its triple Yamaha F350 outboards growling and spinning at just shy of 6000 rpm, our test boat skipped atop the mostly calm surface of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Newport Beach. Only the aft half of the hull was in the water as we flew along — I know because Silver Seas Yachts’ Ben Masonheimer had a drone in the air — and before I knew it we were several miles down the coast. Such was my experience aboard the Tiara Sport 38 LS. Tiara Sport is a recent addition to the Tiara Yachts family and includes the 38 LS we tested and two smaller 34-foot siblings, an LS and LX (more of an express model). The builder is looking to add some luxury to sport yachting, and it’s using outboard power — Yamaha exclusively — to deliver sporty and exhilarating

performance, which, I would venture to say, 58 mph qualifies as. Masonheimer and I pulled tight turns and figure 8s at 50-plus mph, and the 38 LS handled them with a very controlled sportboat lean that tightened the diameter of the circle without bleeding off a ton of speed. Many times it’s nice to have some wave action with some chop during a sea trial, to see how a boat handles such conditions, but a fairly flat day with only a bit of wind chop was just what the editor ordered for a

test of a boat with this kind of speed. We were able to pin the throttles and go full speed to really get a feel for the boat. A nice choppy roll would have been nice for testing the Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, but I’ve been on many boats with a Seakeeper, and the gyro always eliminates the roll. At the aforementioned 58 mph, the triple Yamahas were burning a combined 100 gph, which puts the boat’s range at 174 miles (with a 10 percent reserve). Its most efficient speed was at 4000 rpm and 35 mph, where fuel burn was 40.9 gph, for a range of 280 miles. A good faster cruise would be at 4500 rpm and 40.4 mph, which yielded a 49.9 gph fuel burn and a 242-mile range. While performance is definitely an attribute the 38 LS can brag about, its real strength is in the dayboating sphere, where the center console design boasts two comfortable social areas, one of which has a hidden surprise. In the bow, which is accessible via sidedecks to either side — the walkway to port is raised forward of the helm to accommodate the cabin below — U-shaped seating creates a cozy spot for six people, with a forward-facing bench forward of the console, an aft-facing seat far forward and another bench to port. Cupholders abound and speakers bring the party. Using hooks under the hardtop and three stowable poles set into gunwale rod holders, owners can install a Bimini that covers the bow seating arrangement. At the aft end, a C-shaped settee at the transom wraps around a table to create a dining/cocktail space. Two seats built into the galley console — the same console serves as the base for the triple helm seats — face aft and give the area a conversation pit feel when combined with the settee. This is where things get interesting. Lifting a stainless steel latch unlocks the entire settee island and allows one person to spin it 180 degrees, turning it into an aft-facing viewing platform. It’s a neat touch that is sure to get plenty of use during harbor cruises and dockside cocktail parties. Seeing as how there is no “transom” when the seat is turned — nothing stands between its occupants and the outboards and the open water — spinning it is not a great option for at-speed seating. A sink and a grill, which is hidden under a Corian top, are built into the galley console, which stretches the width of the center console itself. An all-purpose drawer and a drawer-style refrigerator are below the console top, between the built-in rear-facing seats. An ice-maker is built in under the starboard helm seat. Tiara’s work with larger models, and electronics manufacturers’ advancements in bringing large-yacht tech to smaller yachts, means the 38 LS’s helm is both elegant and highly functional. A pair of 16-inch Garmin GPSmap XSV multifunction displays, part of the Tiara Sport Glass Cockpit, are flush with the dash surface and deliver all the information a captain or an editor on a sea trial might need. The Yamahas have their own display, but all their info can be routed to the MFDs for handy viewing.

Tiara is looking to add some luxury to sport yachting.

Amidships, a fully outfitted helm makes operating the 38 LS easy, and the three helm chairs share their base with the galley console and its twin built-in seats. The bow seating can be covered by a stowable Bimini top.

Able to rotate 180 degrees, the transom settee (top left) can face fore or aft. The hardtop provides cover from the sun and houses lights that deliver ambiance at night. Each helm seat has a bolster and adjustable armrests. Two people can sleep comfortably on the berth.

Flanked on the right by the engine throttles and on the left by the Helm Master joystick, the centerline steering wheel anchors a lower dash that includes cupholders, a bow thruster joystick, trim tab controls, a glove compartment and more. Facing the helm are three captain’s chairs that use the forward half of the galley console as their base. Flip-up bolsters on each chair give the occupants their own choice whether to sit or stand. Twin footrests, one high and one low, provide comfort underway. A full windshield provides protection from the wind, though it only wraps a short way around the corners, so helm occupants can enjoy the breeze that comes around the sides without being hit in the face by it at nearly 60 mph. Overhead, a hardtop runs from just forward of the helm to just aft of the galley console, leaving the occupants of the rotating settee in the sun. But a very quiet sun shade extends out of the hardtop to provide settee occupants with shade when it is desired.

Belowdecks, accessed through a sliding door forward of the portside helm chair, is outfitted with a head with a Corian vanity top and a shower curtain, a hanging locker and a berth built for two, not quite queen size. It’s the kind of space a couple can enjoy for a long weekend on the hook somewhere pleasant. The combination of a center console design and a dayboat sensibility creates a boat that can accommodate 15 people for a day on the water and facilitate ease of movement fore and aft. And passengers shouldn’t get tired of sitting. The upholstery is quilted along the backrests and soft where rear ends occupy. Pops of color and large contrasting stitching create visual interest from bow to stern, and teak on the swim platform, footrests, steps and the deck provides a yacht-like feel. With Tiara now divested of the Pursuit brand, its outboard efforts will be focused on the Sport line, so expect it to grow quickly — though maybe not 58 mph quick.

Tester’s Opinion

The Maritimo X60 is a large vessel with a lot of accommodations and tremendous versatility of layout in a sleek stylish package. It is also fun to drive and remarkably efficient.

The X60’s aft cabin can be configured as a beach club, which is shown here, a stateroom or a tender garage.

MARITIMO X60

Layout options abound on this fun-to-drive and efficient 63-footer. its international debut at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in Australia in May, and then recently the first U.S. version arrived for the U.S. Powerboat Show in Annapolis, Md. At both shows — and I suspect wherever it goes — the Maritimo X60 drew crowds and had lines of people waiting to get a closer look. What makes this new Maritimo so exciting? It simply does what most boats cannot: offer a substantial aft cabin and remain visually appealing. Twin cockpit stairwells surround a large hydraulically powered transom door that gives access to a unique aft cabin that can be configured in a variety of ways. This cabin provides versatility and allows owners to get close to the water in a way only seen previously on much larger yachts, without ruining the lines of the boat.

THE MARITIMO X60 MADE

At first glance the Maritimo X60 looks like a stylized version of the builder’s popular S Series sedans, but the touch of a button gently lifts the transom up like the hatchback of a luxury car. One would expect this to lead to a tender garage — an option, certainly — but the X60 I toured Down Under had an aft cabin Beach Club. A stairwell to port provides easy access. Inside along the swim platform is a finished bar area where one can sit and look out at the water while enjoying a cocktail or a glass of wine. A full-size head complete with a separate shower is to port, and a large flat-screen TV graces the forward bulkhead above the wet bar and refrigerator. An internal stairway leads to the main salon and has engine-room access along the way. This beach club design is impressive and unlike anything I have

seen before on a vessel of this size. Its proximity to the water, access through the transom and the cabin, and view astern create a different perspective in this unique socializing area. Details such as pullout barstools, ample storage, ambiance lighting, and an actuator that lifts and seals the transom doorway complete the cabin. The Maritimo X60 I toured in Annapolis had the aft cabin set up as a stateroom. The same transom hatch and access lead to a cabin with a center island bed. The head and shower remain, as does the internal stairway to the salon. The proximity to the water conjures up visions of open-air sleeping on temperate nights with the moon and stars above. Daytime can be spent sunning on the swim platform or sitting partially submerged, like in a wading pool, with the platform lowered into the water. A crew could enjoy a cocktail or dine at a small table on a warm day with their feet dangling in the shallow water. Few owners will trade the larger amidships master to make this their primary cabin, as it is a bit tight, but it remains a fun alternative sleeping cabin when climate permits and a great place to lounge and relax with the sea air close at hand. It also provides a private extra double cabin, even with the transom door closed. Another option utilizes the aft cabin as a tender garage and water toy area. The stairwell and access to the transom remain. The head and shower stay, making a great day head and changing room. Wet guests returning from swimming or watersports can enter through the transom, take a warm shower and change privately before entering the cabin via the internal stairway to the salon. Maritimo is Water 211 gal. owned by Australian boat builder Bill Barry-Cotter, who started Mariner Power Twin Volvo Penta D13-800 Cruisers in 1966, founded Riviera Yachts in 1980, sold Riviera in 2002 diesels and created Maritimo in 2003. Base price Barry-Cotter and his team, including his son Tom, not only design and $2,292,500 build recreational boats, but they own and race offshore powerboats. Designing, building, and racing boats keeps them informed about new technology in engines, equipment and materials that can be applied to the recreational boats. Their racing heritage and experience in building boats created their preference for shaftdriven boats. With shafts, engines can be positioned farther forward, which provides balance and performance — and allows for an aft cabin accommodation area not possible with pods. The unique aft cabin layouts and cabin configuration choices are not all that the X60 has to offer. Given the builder’s racing heritage, its boats are known for their performance. I was lucky enough to run the first X60 in Australia, powered by Scania 925 engines, and then run the American boat in Annapolis equipped with standard Volvo Penta D13-800s (D13-1000s are an option). The aft cabin concept of the X60 is not just for accommodations; placing the engines 26

farther amidships helps it perform. With the helm forward and a low shaft angle, bowrise was barely perceptible, even without tabs, as it rose up evenly and accelerated smoothly. In Chesapeake Bay we encountered choppy seas, and the X60 sliced through them without any slamming or banging. It was raining and we took some spray as I spun donuts through the short chop, but intermittent wipers helped us maintain excellent visibility. Its low running angle allowed us spot and avoid a myriad of crab pots as we headed out to run our performance numbers. Steering, which is derived from Maritimo race boats, was tight and direct and worked flawlessly as we slalomed through the buoys. As expected the top speed of the Volvo 800-powered boat was slightly less — 28.2 knots vs. 33 knots — than the higher-horsepower Scania 925 vessel. At 20 knots the Volvo-powered boat burned 49 gph and had a range of 408 miles. A burn of 2.4 gallons per nautical mile is good efficiency for a vessel of this size at cruise. Range is a slightly better 424 miles at 18.7 knots, and it drops to 355 miles at 25.1 knots and 343 miles at 28.2 knots. Up the stairs the main salon is decked

out with comfortable seating on both sides and twin helm seats forward to starboard. The X60 has Maritimo’s signature aft galley, which includes a large pop-out pantry, an island and folding doors that join the cockpit. Cockpit seating around a teak table creates a nice outdoor gathering area protected by an overhang. Cockpit amenities include an electric grill, a sink, an ice-maker and a refrigerator. A second seating area with a table adjacent the galley is an option. There is excellent continuity between the salon, galley and cockpit that creates a large, open entertaining area that can be segmented into smaller gathering spaces. Ahead of the galley to port, a lounge with a dining table is raised slightly to ensure excellent visibility while running. Dual opening skylights, one over the galley and the other forward over the helm, provide air and light, which highlights the contemporary furnishings and finely finished wood.

The helm has twin adjustable seats, and the throttles and controls are within easy reach of the driver along the opening side window. Visibility from the helm is good all around, whether the driver is seated or standing. A cushioned lounge seat just ahead of the windshield on the foredeck creates a congregating spot, and a large sunpad farther forward adds to the appeal. Belowdecks offers two master cabin options. One features a full-beam master with an en suite head and a second double cabin forward with an angled island bed. An alternate layout places the master head inside the master cabin, along the port side, and creates a twin bunk cabin in the corridor. With the aft-cabin stateroom, options include four cabins (three doubles and a twin); three cabins (all doubles); three cabins (master, double forward and a twin); or a master, a double cabin and the beach club.

uring a summer 2017 cruise, my son-in-law, Jamieson, suggested we put together a joint family cruise. I thought the idea sounded great and went to work on it. After a bit of discussion, we decided a crew consisting of his parents, Ian and Cheri; he, my daughter, Tiffany, and our grandson, Winston, would join Melody and I for a summer 2018 cruise in the San Juan Islands. In previous years, Melody and I took our boat, Mucho Gusto, on the outside of Washington up to and back from the Salish Sea. I am a delivery captain, so I am familiar with the route across the Columbia River bar and outside, having done it many times. But we had a problem. While Mucho Gusto is a powerboat of more than 50 feet in length, it has but two staterooms, so our first order of business was to find a vessel large enough to accommodate seven people comfortably. We wanted to find, charter and operate a boat with four staterooms, at least two heads and plenty of living space for six adults and a child. I figured a 60-footer, at minimum, was required. I sent emails to several charter companies to explain what we were looking for, but most were unable to give us any viable options. One person, however, came back with a positive reply and a willingness to help us find what we were looking for: Laura Bendixen at Bearfoot Charters in Lynnwood, Wash. She started searching and came back in a couple of days with several private vessels in our size range that were available for a bareboat charter. After looking at the pictures and specs for the various vessels, we settled on Silhouette, a 63-foot Viking cockpit motoryacht with four staterooms and three heads. During a series of emails we worked out the details and price, and the owners checked my Coast Guard documents and references. We had a boat for our family vacation. Our itinerary would keep us moving most of the week. We planned our route such that we were on the move only a couple of hours most days. We tied up at marinas all but one night. Our longest day on the water was little more than four hours. We wanted to make sure there were activities that would appeal to guests who ranged from 6 years old to more than 50 years old. A pair of Citizen walkie-talkies kept the 6-yearold busy for hours. We made Winston the “second watch officer,” and he spent a lot of his time assisting the captain by going around the boat and checking on the status of activities and the location of various crewmembers. He also watched for nearby vessels and reported their location by radio to the captain. For the older crew, we included a mix of shopping and sightseeing in the ports we visited, and we explored the waterways via kayak and tender. We were busy. That’s not to say we didn’t have downtime; after all, that’s what vacations are for. A quiet afternoon on the upper deck reading or relaxing was also a part of the experience.

Tuesday, Aug. 7

Ian and Cheri join us at Dunato’s Marine, Silhouette’s home base on Lake Union. After stowing our gear and familiarizing ourselves with the boat, we proceed through Salmon Bay and the Hiram M. Chittenden locks into Shilshole Bay and Puget Sound. Our final destination this day is La Conner, one of my favorite places to visit, but we have one stop along the way. Shilshole Marina lies at the end of the channel from Salmon Bay. We stop briefly

at the guest dock to pick up Tiffany and Winston and then continue to La Conner, where we arrive early in the evening. Jamieson will join us later in the trip.

Its downtown area is bordered by the channel, numerous eating and drinking establishments line the walk above the channel, and boats of various sizes and types tie up in its waters. It is a great spot to provision, shop and see the sights. Melody and I delight in watching our guests, first-timers to La Conner, explore the many shops and eateries that line both Morris and First streets in the downtown area. sharing their experience with one another, as well as showing off the treasures they purchased during the day’s exploration. La Conner is the perfect destination to start our family vacation. Thursday, Aug. 9

We cast off lines and begin the next leg of our journey at 7 a.m. Riding on an outgoing tide that is halfway through its cycle gives us plenty of water below Silhouette’s keel. As long as we don’t venture outside our laid-in course, we will be fine. As we motor across Padilla Bay, our guests see mudflats develop just a few yards from where we are running, and they become concerned; their concerns, however, are put to rest by a few reassuring words from the captain. Our Rosario Strait crossing is uneventful thanks to light winds and modest wave action. We make the crossing behind a ferry that’s bound for points west and only have to slow a bit to allow an eastbound ferry out of Thatcher Pass to break into open water. Thanks to the watchful eyes of my “second watch officer,” I am informed of the ferries’ position on a regular basis during the crossing. As we turn in to Upright Channel and then in to San Juan Channel, traffic increases considerably. Private vessels coming from and going to Fisherman Bay, Friday Harbor, Deer Harbor and Rosario all pass through this area on their way to other destinations. Add in a mix of ferries, commercial service vessels and fishing vessels, and the traffic can be very busy at times. By the time we reach the end of the San Juan Channel and turn left in to Spieden Channel, there is a steady line of boats in front of and behind us, both coming and going. Given even more traffic from Sucia Island and points north in Canada, skippers have to be on their game to blend in with the smooth flow of the area. That’s not to say that inattentive or inexperienced skippers won’t occasionally blunder through and disrupt the flow of things, but everyone makes adjustments for

them, and the flow gets back to normal as soon as they pass. While the captain has to pay attention to the operation of the boat in traffic, the guests get an opportunity to see a variety of boats up close and wave to them as they pass. We parallel the south side of Spieden Island and stay to the left of the green buoy that marks Center Reef. Past the Center Reef buoy we make a right turn and head north. Reid Harbor is to the left of the two small islands that mark its entrance. Once inside, we find plenty of room to anchor, but that’s not always the case. The harbor can be very busy and good anchorage scarce, so it’s best to arrive early. This day we find a good spot, in about halfway, and soon we have the anchor set, the small boat launched and the kayak in the water. We spend the remainder of the day exploring the island, in kayaks and on foot, as well as relaxing with a good book. Come evening we dine on the upper deck and visit with one another and folks who paddle by the boat. The gentle motion of the boat at anchor lulls us while we listen to the harbor’s evening sounds, which are

punctuated by occasional laughter from a distant boat.

Even though our next destination, Roche Harbor, is only three miles from Reid Harbor, we are up and pulling anchor at 7 a.m. Roche Harbor is a very popular spot and slips are reserved early in the season. When we called weeks earlier to book a space, we were told no more reservations were being accepted and the available slips are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. If we want a slip today, we have to be there early. At 8 a.m. we are on the VHF radio, calling the harbormaster at Roche Harbor on Channel 78 to request a slip. We are now on the list and standing by until a 70-foot slip comes available. We find a spot in the harbor, drop anchor and wait. As the morning progresses, we hear other boats call in for slip assignments. Some have reservations but most are like us: looking for a spot for the night. The smaller boats are assigned a slip almost SEAMAGAZINE.COM DECEMBER 2018

(Clockwise from right) Winston keeps a wary eye for trouble afoot. Port Townsend’s historical buildings, shops and restaurants provide a difficult-to-leave atmosphere. Tiffany, Winston, Ian and Cheri cool their heels. Winston surveys the scene in Roche Harbor, a resort that has something for everyone.

immediately, but our name is not called as the morning readies to become afternoon. Jamieson is flying in midmorning to join us for the rest of the cruise, and we want to be in a slip by the time he boards. As his arrival time approaches we are still at anchor, so Tiffany takes the small boat to shore and picks him up. The crew is getting restless as noon approaches. There are shops to visit and things to see and do. As we are about to load the little boat for a second trip to the dock, the harbormaster calls and assigns us a slip. We raise the anchor and within a short time have the boat secure in a slip. The captain and a helper stay behind to hook up power and finish tying up, but

trip may not be as smooth as the passages we have had until now. Since the run to Port Townsend is the first open water our guests will encounter, we go over the cautions we discussed at the outset of our cruise. I remind them to check with the helm before going forward on deck, where the life vests are and what to do if we experience trouble. While I don’t want them to be concerned, I do want them aware. We back out of our slip at 8 a.m. and motor out of Roche Harbor. Since we are leaving on a falling tide, we go out and around Henry Island rather than out through Mosquito Pass. On an outgoing tide, the current can be harsh in the pass, and I want to keep the ride as smooth as

Whenever I leave Port Townsend, I find myself wishing I had one more day to spend here. the rest of the crew is off on a shopping/ sightseeing spree. Roche Harbor Resort is everything its name implies. In addition to a first-class marina with all the services boaters expect — staff to assist with docking chores, boat washing and waxing, free holding tank pumpout, and fuel — the resort includes the Hotel de Haro, several great dining options, shops, a bocce court, hiking trails, whale watching and more. Of course, with all those features comes the hustle and bustle of a resort. There is plenty to see and do for all ages. After a busy afternoon of trying to take in all the resort has to offer, we gather together for drinks and dinner at the Madrona restaurant. Overlooking the marina, Madrona is a great place to enjoy the views during a five-star meal. It is a popular place, so visitors should plan to wait for a table, but the results are worth the wait. I usually have the fish tacos.

Saturday, Aug. 11

During the night a cloud layer settles over the islands, the temperature drops and a slight wind develops. This portion of the

possible for our guests. As soon as we enter Haro Strait, the chop begins to build and the waves reach about three feet. The ride is still comfortable, though we can feel the motion of the ocean. One of the guests begins to feel a little ill, but a move from the bridge to a different part of the boat brings some comfort. As we approach the southern end of San Juan Island, our course takes us farther from shore, and the water smooths out and the ride improves. The overcast skies continue and an occasional light fog drifts in and out, limiting visibility to a quarter of a mile at times. The waters where Rosario Strait, Juan de Fuca Strait and Admiralty Inlet meet, near Point Wilson, are said to have more rips and whirlpools than any other place in Puget Sound and its surrounding waters. This day, it appears we don’t have to be concerned about it. No visit to the northern waters of Puget Sound and Juan de Fuca Strait is complete without a stop in Port Townsend. It is a boater’s, historian’s, shopper’s and foodie’s paradise. By the time the final lines are secure in our moorage at Point Hudson Marina, the crew is ready to hit the streets and see the sights. Although the skies are

cloudy and the threat of thundershowers looms, spirits are high. A carnival atmosphere permeates through the Saturday afternoon crowd of visitors and shoppers, which makes for a most enjoyable trek along downtown Water Street. Not even a sudden thunderclap and 20-minute torrential downpour can dampen the day’s festive spirit. Fortunately, we have just stepped into the Old Whiskey Mill Lounge for lunch when the storm hits, so we avoid being soaked. As soon as the rain stops, the shops’ doors open, people pour out and the street is again filled with laughter and shoppers, some wetter than before the rain.

Sunday, Aug. 12

Whenever I leave Port Townsend, I find myself wishing I had one more day to spend here. I want one more walk along Water Street — to visit the Northwest Maritime Center, to shop at the multitude of stores and shops — and one more lunch or dinner at a great eatery along the way. I long to spend a few more minutes watching the boats and ferries ply the waters of Port Townsend Bay and to have another conversation with the friendly people who live and work there. As we depart Point Hudson Marina, I ask our guests their thoughts on our stay at Port Townsend. To a person, they say it is a highlight of the cruise. High praise considering all the great places we have visited over the course of a week. The final leg of our journey is the return to Seattle. Our departure and cruise are uneventful, with calm waters and light winds along Admiralty Inlet and into Puget Sound. By early afternoon we are tied up at the guest dock at Shilshole Marina and Tiffany and Jamieson, along with Winston, are departing for home to start their work week on Monday. With only the older members remaining, we decide to have one more outing before we return Silhouette to its berth in Lake Union the next morning. Watching the sunset from the deck at Ray’s Boat House while enjoying a drink and a bowl of chowder with Ian and Cheri is a great way to end our family cruise. I would love to do it again. Next time, perhaps more family and a bigger boat. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  DECEMBER 2018  35

ASPEN POWER CATAMARAN’S NEW Outboard Series expands their patented PROA catamaran line. They offer different configurations using outboard power based on their popular 28’ and 32’ models, some with cabins, and others with new open-air designs. The all new Aspen 32CC (center console) provides boaters with the versatility, open seating, and fishability inherent to center consoles but with the seaworthiness and efficiency of a PROA cat. The advanced design incorporates two different sized Outboard motors proportional to each hull size running simultaneously for improved top speeds. A 200HP on the main hull to starboard is paired with a 70HP on the smaller portside PROA hull. Initial testing shows top speeds of over 30mph and modest fuel burn in the 8GPH range at 20mph. Plenty of on deck seating, a step-down cabin with head, and queen berth provide accommodations not found in most Center Consoles of this size.

GOOD AND GETTING BETTER Otter Bay Marina on North Pender Island has all the amenities a boater needs. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP

MOST MARINAS IN THE SAN Juans and Gulf Islands are popular due to their proximity to waterfront villages. Others are within easy walking distance to an excellent restaurant. Rarely are there marinas that need no association to be a worthy cruising destination.

Otter Bay Marina 1 on North Pender Island is one of those unique facilities. Offering a wonderfully relaxing environment just north of the border, and one of the most beautiful family-oriented marinas in British Columbia’s Gulf Islands, Otter Bay Marina should not be missed. A P P R O AC H W I T H C AU T I O N Mariners approaching the marina are well advised to maintain a watch for B.C. ferries. Swanson Channel is a busy route for ferries traveling between Swartz Bay and Active Pass. There is also a ferry landing on the north side of Otter Bay. Past the ferry landing, the marina lies just east of an elevated viewing deck with national and provincial flags. A green buoy just beyond marks the near-shore edge of the channel. The entire facility is one of theIsland cleanest in the Gulf Islands, and the staff is personable. The grounds and facilities are set up to entertain yacht club rendezvous and boating families. GET TO KNOW

MONTLAKE CUT, SEATTLE

SEATTLE BOATERS LIKELY KNOW THE Montlake Cut, that narrow channel that connects Lake Washington to Lake Union and, by extension, to Puget Sound. Begun in 1909 and completed in 1916, Montlake Cut has served commercial and recreational interests for more than 100 years.

When opened, Montlake Cut lowered Lake Washington’s level by almost nine feet.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

First Nations people have occupied the Pender Islands for thousands of years, so it is likely that they would have had a summer village at Otter Bay. The indigenous word Halq’emeylem means “place of otters.”

The Cut is approximately 2,500 feet long and is 100 feet wide in the center channel.

Seattle Yacht Club’s opening day parade moves through Montlake Cut. University of Washington rowing teams use the Cut as a race course and tag its concrete walls with painted inscriptions.

A drawbridge carries Montlake Boulevard over the Cut. FA S T FAC T

ACCORDING TO THE latest data from NMMA, new boat sales in Washington were up 29.4 percent in dollar value and 10.6 percent in units sold in August 2018 compared to August 2017.

Nomar® Bumpers are a softmounted bumper which absorbs impact and allows you to slide in and out of your slip with NO FRICTION, DRAG OR MARRING of your hull. This makes for a safer & less stressful docking experience by allowing everyone to stay on board. Nomar® Bumpers eliminate the need for fenders & are perfect for tight docking situations and narrow slips. They also allow the vessel closer to the dock for easier and safer boarding. Task Forces wants boaters to know that NOAA research indicates southern resident orcas are particularly sensitive to the underwater noise generated at the 50 kHz frequency. The task force is asking boaters to turn off their single-frequency 50 kHz depthsounders when orcas are present and to switch their dual-frequency sounders, fishfinders, etc., to the 200 kHz setting when orcas are present. Visit bewhalewise. org to learn more.

QUICK ESCAPE

“EUREKA!”

Boaters will “find themselves” in this beautiful natural bay on the rugged Northern California coast. CROSSING THE BAR For many centuries, mariners struggled with simply finding, let alone getting into Humboldt Bay. The natural entrance to the bay went undiscovered for so long because the opening was hidden and storms and fog concealed it. It was not until 1806 that Capt. Jonathan Winship first recorded entry into Humboldt Bay by sea. Eventually the mouth of the bay was protected and reinforced by sand spits and jetties. The Humbolt Bay Bar is considered by boaters to be the second most dangerous bar crossing on the West Coast, the first being the Columbia River Bar. Visiting boaters who are unfamiliar with this crossing should check the tide tables and swell conditions before attempting passage.

Sunset Shoreline between Crescent City and Eureka is just part of the spectacular scenery on the coast of Northern California.

MOORING Humboldt Bay Harbor has a two-hour Courtesy Tie-Up and the marina operates on VHF Channel 14. Guest boats can moor at Woodley Island Marina 1 , the largest marina in Humboldt Bay, featuring a café and bar, laundry and shower facilities, ships chandlery and boat sales, as well as rentals and boat lessons. LOCAL CURIOSITIES Today, Eureka is a vibrant seaport city with a close proximity to numerous renowned attractions. The Aqua Rodeo Farms 2 , located in the Woodley Island Marina, is a curious “farm” that is a must-stop if you love raw oysters. Take a tour of the facilities, and then enjoy some of Humboldt’s finest beers, wines, cheeses, breads, chocolates and of course fresh oysters in the Local Tasting Room. Nearby Old Town Eureka is listed on the United States National Register of Historic SEAMAGAZINE.COM  DECEMBER 2018  CA-1

the Eureka boardwalk. To the north of Woodley Island, past Indian Island, is the Humboldt Bay Maritime Museum 6 . To get to the museum, boaters would need to take a car to cross the 255 Highway. For historical boat aficionados, the drive will be well worth it. You can spot the red barn-like structure surrounded by large boat artifacts from the highway. There is also an adjacent café called Samoa Cookhouse if you would like to try a historical family style meal in an old logging mill. G O O D E AT S A N D D R I N K S For more dining options, award-winning Lost Coast Brewery and Café 7 is located just a few blocks from the marina. Lost Coast Brewery brews both year-round and seasonal beers, and is one of only two breweries in Humboldt County to be female owned. It also has a fantastic café where you can pair a unique brew with a burger or some “chicken lips.” Right off the marina on Woodley Island, Café Marina & Woodley’s Bar 8 serves fresh, local seafood for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. For a waterfront dining experience in walking distance from Old Town Eureka, Bayfront Restaurant 9 has the traditional Japanese teppanyaki dining experience. Farther down the boardwalk, Jack’s Seafood 10 has more local seafood classics, and a great happy hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Eureka is not your cookie-cutter coastal town. It’s an eclectic working port that is directly in the middle of the stunning Redwood Coast that is definitely worth a visit.

MEET ADAM SANCHEZ Ferry Captain, Catalina Express

BOAT OWNERS SEE THEM REGULARLY, the ubiquitous ferries of the Catalina Express — catamarans and monohulls in an eight-vessel fleet — moving people and supplies to and from Catalina Island, from San Pedro, Long Beach and Dana Point. Adam Sanchez is one of the people who operate the ferries, and we caught up with the 20-year Express vet, the last eight of those as a captain, recently for a chat. Sea: How does one become a ferry captain? Adam Sanchez: I took a very intense two-week class that prepared me for the exam to get my 100-ton license, which allows me to operate vessels that weigh 100 tons or less. All of the Catalina Express vessels are within that range. How has the island changed since you’ve been a regular visitor? There are many new ways to see the beauty of the island: Hummer tours, hiking trails, zip lining, and different boat tours. There are also many good places to eat and shop in the town of Avalon. What is the one thing passengers consistently do that you wish they’d stop doing? I wish they would stop saluting me. What some things passengers can do to ensure they have a pleasant experience aboard the ferry? Arrive early to get their boat tickets and get in line early. The seats are not reserved,

so the first people in line get the first choice of where they want to sit, whether it’s general seating or Commodore Lounge seating. Ask the crew where to sit if you are worried about motion sickness and also where to go for the best views. Follow the luggage guidelines and bring what you are able to handle by yourself; don’t overpack. That way you won’t have to leave anything behind and you won’t struggle taking your luggage on and off the boat. I see this a lot. What is the most exciting thing you have seen while on the job? Anytime we see whales breaching, that is always exciting. What is your favorite snack on the ferry? I enjoy the beef jerky. Also, I enjoy a snack-size bag of cookies, which is a free snack choice available to the people who ride in the Commodore Lounge. I have a major sweet tooth.

NEW PIER COMING

CHANNEL ISLANDS NATIONAL Park and the National Park Service announced the signing of the Record of Decision for the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the replacement of the pier at Scorpion Anchorage on East Santa Cruz Island. The new pier will be a longer and wider one south of its current site, with an improved gangway for safer visitor access. Scorpion Anchorage is the most visited destination in the national park with more than 65,000 annual visitors who arrive by personal boat or ferry transportation. Park officials are aiming for a project start date in fall 2019.

NEWPORT BEACH CHRISTMAS BOAT PARADE

MARINA CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES

THE FOURTH PHASE of a seven-part construction project

is expected to be completed in May 2019 at the Marina del Rey Marina. Bellingham Marine already completed three phases of the marina rebuild, the third phase being completed in May. Marina del Rey Marina was expanded out into the main channel with the most recent phase, with 48 new slips (ranging from 40 to 70 feet) added. Phase four will continue with channel slip construction. Bellingham Marine staff stated all in-water work must be competed between September of the current year and April of 2019. THE NEWPORT BEACH BOAT PARADE is the largest lighted boat parade in Southern California, and 2018 celebrates the event’s 110th year. Commencing and ending at the tip of Lido Isle, the parade runs from Dec. 19-23 and begins at 6:30 p.m. each day. Opening night festivities include an appearance by the Los Angeles Charger Girls and photo ops with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman.

More than 200 vessels participate

— the parade originated as a procession of nine boats decked out in Japanese lanterns — many of them decked out in thousands of lights and decorations.

More than 1 million people view the parade each year.

The parade route covers almost 14 miles.

Boat owners have spent more than $50,000 to decorate their vessel.

A fireworks show precedes the

parade’s opening night and follows closing night.

Several charter companies run nightly cruises to view the parade.

DECEMBER’S QUESTION

What are the important differences between financing a boat and financing a home? The biggest misconception a lot of people have is that financing a boat or yacht is as easy as financing a home. It is not. The bank that is lending on the home doesn’t have to worry that the home is going to travel into foreign waters and leave the country.

I financed a brokerage boat many years ago but am considering a new boat now. What differences should I expect?

Generally speaking, if the boat/yacht is new or barely used, you can expect a lower interest rate and sometimes a longer term, perhaps 240 months opposed to 180.

What extras can boat buyers fold into the boat loan? Do you recommend buyers do so?

Most of the lenders will let you add some extras into the loan, such as dealer installed options, service contracts and extended warranties. I would recommend folding such expenses into the loan, because all of these items add value to the boat.

What can a buyer do to cause himself problems during the buying/financing process?

The number one problem or hang-up with buying/financing a yacht is if the buyer is in escrow with an additional

major purchase, such as a house, property, jet or airplane. The lenders focus on a borrower’s debt-to-income and debt-toliquidity ratios, and if his debt percentage is too high it can make the lender have reservations.

Have you heard any “myths” regarding the boat loan process that you can set straight? I often hear that financing a yacht is just like financing an exotic automobile. It is not. There are considerably more stipulations with financing a yacht, one of which is lenders require borrowers to document the vessel with the United States Coast Guard.
