MORE OF THE GOOD STUFF HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE. Our blue orb
has completed another trip around the sun and 12 more issues of Sea have informed, entertained and, hopefully, captivated our readers. Expect more of the same and some unexpected content in 2019, as the marine industry continues to evolve and adapt to innovations that didn’t exist a couple of years ago — and that may not, in fact, exist as of this moment. Fun stuff. How many people, whether they grew up to own a boat or not, read Mark Twain’s stories about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and thought about riding America’s rivers? Drifting on a raft at the mercy of the current was the nostalgic way to dream about doing it, but a modern boat was the more practical way to actually accomplish it. I was lucky enough, several times, as a preteen to get to experience the Mississippi River aboard small powerboats. Pretty sure I never attended my own funeral like the irascible Tom Sawyer, but the odds are good that I drove my parents crazy. Anyway, this river reminiscence has been driven by our cruising feature in this issue. John and Tracey Cerul, aboard their Selene 47, Pairadice (and accompanied by buddy 6
boat Alaskan Sea-Duction), made a 900-mile trek from Portland, Ore., to Hells Canyon Resort in Clarkston, Wash., and back on the Columbia and Snake rivers. Those are definitely two of our iconic waterways. Eight locks and four railroad bridges, each way, challenged them to be meticulous and patient, and served as practice for when they transit the Panama Canal in a couple of years — they plan their cruising itinerary far in advance. Turn to page 34 to read the interview and gaze at the photos. Readers thinking of a cruising adventure far from home, or maybe closer to home but with a larger group than their boat can accommodate, but who are wondering how to make it work should check out the feature that begins on page 46. It’s about how to charter a power yacht. Its writer, Zuzana Prochazka, has organized and led charters from the Caribbean to the South Pacific, so she has qualified insight into the topic. Plus, she talked to charter brokers and received solid info from them. Here’s to a great 2019.

Lead Boat: Silent 55
The Endless Cruiser The Silent 55 is a solar-powered cat that can theoretically run forever.
SILENT-YACHTS WAS FOUNDED IN 2009 and introduced the world to the Solarwave 46, the world’s first fully self-sufficient production bluewater catamaran. Now the builder has moved up to the Silent 55, which stretches the concept of a silent ride both physically and technologically. Thirty high-efficiency solar panels cover the main cabin and flybridge top and are capable of up to a 10 kilowatt-peak, which the builder claims is plenty of juice to cruise up to 100 miles a day and power the boat’s electrical needs. An inverter readies the power for appliances, and a 100 kw generator is aboard but should only be needed in emergencies, according to the builder. Potential propulsion configurations include twin e-motors — 135 kw in the E-Power version or 30 kw in the Cruiser version — twin 200 hp diesels paired with twin 14 kw e-motors in the Hybrid Power version, or any of those power choices combined with a mast and sails in the Sailor version. Check out the builder’s website for full details. Inside a salon, galley and helm are in the spacious main cabin, which has excellent all-around views, and the master is forward on the main level. Depending on the buyer’s choice, the layout can include five more staterooms and three or four heads. Outdoor living consists of a cockpit, an open but covered flybridge, and a sun lounge and twin trampoline nets at the bow. Sidedecks provide easy transit forward and aft. The Silent 55 can easily be handled by two people and is a good fit for a family cruising without a crew. Storage abounds on the yacht, providing room for a dinghy, bikes and water toys. Banderas Bay includes muchos boating facilities and sightseeing opportunities.
ON OCT. 22, 2018, Puerto Vallarta boaters were protected from Category 4 hurricane winds
and seas, thanks in part to Banderas Bay’s geography. With 150-knot winds and 25-foot seas, Hurricane Willa buzz-sawed a path up the Jalisco coast. But when it approached the Cabo Corrientes headland, its ferocious winds and seas were blocked by the Sierra Cuale range’s 9,000-foot peaks, which rim the south shore of Banderas Bay. As Willa crept north past Punta Mita at high tide, 11-foot swells that entered Banderas Bay from 270 degrees T (almost west) extinguished themselves on the southwest-facing beaches of Punta Montoga. That secondary headland in turn shielded all four marinas in the Puerto Vallarta area.

“All the boats here did fine,” said Catalina Liana, a spokesperson for Marina Riviera Nayarit at La Cruz, which, as the westernmost of Puerto Vallarta’s marina harbors, is more exposed to tropical storm weather than the others. However, the marina’s beefy breakwater enclosure effectively shielded the docks and boats inside. “The swell wasn’t nearly as bad as we feared it might be. No boats or docks were damaged.” In fact, in the 165-year history of storm tracking, no hurricane eye has ever penetrated Banderas Bay’s natural storm baffles to reach Puerto Vallarta. Torrential rain and 16 knots of wind, yes, but no hurricanes.

Filling the need for boating facilities, four full-service marinas are available along the northeast shore of Banderas Bay. The westernmost of the marinas is the newest kid in town, Marina Riviera Nayarit at La Cruz, which has expanded to 340 slips since it was built in 2006. The town of La Cruz and trendy. This marina’s C is picturesque O C E A N lighted entrance is about 15 nautical miles northwest of downtown Puerto Vallarta. Then, six miles southwest, toward downtown, the elongated estuary called Nuevo Vallarta Inlet houses two marinas. A turn to the north past the lighted jetties leads to Paradise Village Marina — 200 slips to 240 feet — which serves most megayachts within a large gated resort with a zoo, golf and a shopping center. Vallarta Yacht Club is housed in Paradise Village Marina. In Nuevo Vallarta Inlet’s smaller south arm is Marina Nuevo Vallarta, the smallest marina in town (150 slips), partially renovated in 2016. Restaurants and shops line the seawall above the docks. Nearby is a

dolphin encounter and one of the bay’s two port captains’ offices. Finally, less than a mile north of downtown, Puerto Vallarta’s municipal harbor houses Marina Vallarta (230 slips), the original boating facility opened in 1990 and recently renovated by Bay View Grand. This municipal harbor also houses cruise ships, navy docks, Opequimar and private homes with docks.
BOATYARDS
Both boatyards are on the north shore of Banderas Bay. La Cruz Ship Yard is located within Marina Riviera Nayarit’s breakwaters. It has a 150-ton Travelift that can accommodate boats to a 32-foot beam, a full range of repair services, a fuel dock for diesel and gas, and a chandler store, but no long-term boat storage on land.
Four full-service marinas are available along the northeast shore of Banderas Bay.
FISH YEAR-ROUND
Banderas is the largest bay in Mexico, about 25 miles east to west and 13 miles north to south, and fringed on the west by the Tres Marietas Islands. Fishermen don’t even have to leave the bay to snag delicious dorado (September through February), grouper (July), red snapper (April) and wahoo (January). But for bill fishing, they may head out past the Marietas for black, blue and striped marlin (September through December) and sailfish (August through January). Tuna are best June through September.
PLAY IN THE BAY
The remarkable Tres Marietas (Three Little Marias) islands are a national park and biosphere preserve just south of Punta Mita. Besides spectacular underwater caves and walls for snorkeling and scuba diving, the islands shelter nesting colonies of many marine birds. Only about 100 visitors are allowed each day, so boaters need
a day permit from SEMARNAT’s natural resources office (322-222-0703) to anchor out there and dive or step ashore. Sadly, before this limit, more than 125,000 people swarmed the little Marias yearly, damaging the habitats. Humpback whales are often spotted around the Tres Marietas from December through March, plus a few orcas, Brydes whales and a gazillion dolphins. Two villages on the bay’s steep south shore are especially fun to explore. Boca de Tomatlan is a half-mile fjord where a dozen exotic vacation villas cling to the jungle-clad sides (binocular sightseeing) and umbrella tables line the narrow beach. Yelapa is more remote — no paved road in — and has a wider beach dotted with palapa-roofed seafood cantinas. Yelapa is famous for its coconut pies, two spectacular waterfalls and the California expats’ slogan, “A palapa in Yelapa beats a condo in Redondo.” Both are fair-weather anchorages with concrete dinghy landings, but visitors can use the water-taxi panga.
The other yard is Opequimar Marine Center. Located on the west side of Puerto Vallarta municipal harbor’s narrow main channel, Opequimar has an 88-ton Travelift, a 50-ton crane, a full range of repair services, a fuel dock for diesel and gas, a chandler store, and limited dry storage on land (some is under cover). Opequimar also operates a search and rescue service within Banderas Bay; hail Opequimar Rescue on VHF Channel 16 and 68.
OFFICIALDOM
All the marina offices can help with port clearance, or you can do it yourself. The Nayarit port captain’s office overlooks the south side of the entrance to Nuevo Vallarta Inlet. That jurisdiction covers Marina Riviera Nayarit, Paradise Village and Nuevo Vallarta marinas. The rest of Banderas Bay lies within the state of Jalisco; the port captain for Marina Vallarta is located at the cruise ship dock to starboard as you enter the municipal harbor.

As with any paint project, applying Durabak requires a sanded, cleaned and taped surface.
SLIP SLIDING AWAY When it’s time to update a boat’s nonskid, there are renewal options.
Basic Installation Tips While these will vary widely depending on which nonskid you choose, here are a couple of basic tips that can be applied to most any installation. Prep
THERE’S NOTHING MORE HAZARDOUS than safety equipment that seems functional but in reality will fail when needed the most. A perfect example of this is a worn nonskid surface that provides adequate footing when dry but becomes dangerously slippery during wet or stormy conditions. Here’s a quick look at some popular nonskid renewal choices.
NONSKID OPTIONS
When the factory-molded nonskid surface of a typical fiberglass boat becomes worn, owners have a number of aftermarket options to choose from, each with pros and cons to weigh apart from their actual nonskid qualities. Considerations such as cost and durability are certainly important, but so too are factors such as ease of installation or cleaning when exposed to contaminants such as dirt or fish slime. The ultimate goal is a nonskid surface that not only meets these concerns but is also effective in extreme conditions while providing a good feel underfoot. The most common nonskid replacement options can be loosely divided into three
categories: • Deck paints with a grit-type traction
material added to them • Deck paints that feature a textured surface • Nonskid mats or coverings that rely on some form of adhesive to mount them in place
GRIT-TYPE NONSKID
Some deck paints use some form of “grit” or media to provide traction. Examples include anything from graded/sifted sand or crushed walnut shells to polymer beads. Larger, sharper grit produces the best traction but is also less friendly to bare feet or skin. Conversely, fine grit is less aggressive to skin but provides less traction.
Prep the surface per the manufacturer’s instructions. This will commonly involve washing the deck with a mild boat soap to remove dirt, grease and other contaminants. Allow it to dry, then sand with an orbital sander using 60-grit paper to both level the area and scuff the old surface. Finish with 120-grit sandpaper, vacuum up any dust, and wipe down the surface with a rag and 202 Fiberglass Solvent Wash. Replace the cloth as it picks up residue. Tape
With apologies to Robert Frost, careful masking (e.g., straight lines, curved corners) during a nonskid paint project will help give the finished project a professional look. For cleaner edges, allow paint to set up for about 30 minutes before you remove the masking tape. Don’t wait until it’s fully dry, however, as the tape will be more difficult to remove and may “tear” the paint.

11/28/18 2:47 PM
Other considerations include the use of one- or two-part paints — the former being cheaper, the latter being more durable — and color selection. Lighter colors are cooler but produce more glare and tend show dirt more readily. Depending on the product used, the grit itself can come premixed in nonskid paint or be sold as an additive for mixing into deck paint by the user prior to application. It can also be sprinkled onto wet deck paint, followed by additional coats of thinned paint, to provide the appropriate color. Products such as Durabak, Epifanes Nonskid Deck coating, Interlux Interdeck and Pettit EZ-Decks are all good examples of premixed nonskid paint. Modern nonskid additives include Awlgrip Griptex (a polymer bead aggregate that comes in fine, coarse, and extracoarse grades) and Epifanes Non-Skid Beads, a pre-measured polymer-bead compound sold for mixing with Epifanes polyurethane and monourethane paints.
SeaDek utilizes marine-grade 3M pressure-sensitive adhesive backing, allowing users to simply peel and stick panels in place. Cost-wise, nonskid mats and deck coverings will typically be more expensive than paint, but they also provide more customization with regard to design patterns and color options.

Great gift for you, your boat and the environment!
TEXTURED DECK PAINTS
Textured deck paints get their traction from the raised patterns created by using a special roller sleeve during application. As the nonskid property is provided by the texture of the paint itself, rather than suspended grit or other filler media, there’s no worry about the paint wearing down over time and releasing the nonskid material.
NONSKID MATS AND COVERINGS
Nonskid mats and coverings are a popular choice due to their traction, stain resistance, low maintenance, and wide variety of colors and finishes (including faux teak). Their cushiony nature provides a modicum of shock absorption, which increases comfort underfoot, and noise reduction. Their ease of installation lets even the DIYer achieve a custom look, whether installing smaller self-trimmed mats or template-made kits that cover an entire deck. Popular examples include Treadmaster, SeaDek, and Esthec Nautical decking. Treadmaster and Esthec panels are glued in place using a manufacturersupplied, user-applied adhesive.

GRAND BANKS 60 SKYLOUNGE
Old-world craftsmanship and modern technology combine in the iconic builder’s latest model.
Tester’s Opinion
The GB60 Skylounge is an admirable coastal cruiser and is also capable of offshore passages. The beauty of its versatility is that owners can choose fast island hopping or slower extended passagemaking depending on conditions, destinations and preference.

ON AN OVERCAST AND rainy day on Chesapeake Bay, I boarded the new Grand Banks 60 Skylounge for a test drive. The GB60 is a big vessel with a length overall of 65 feet, 4 inches, and we were in a tight spot in the marina, tucked between pilings with a sailboat side-tied directly ahead. As I threw off the lines, Capt. Graeme Mellor, Grand Banks’ delivery captain, eased the boat forward with the optional Yacht Controller. From his position on the sidedeck, he was able to gently pirouette the boat out of the slip and guide it through the tight marina. Once clear we both retreated to the Skylounge to relax in the twin Stidd helm seats.
The Grand Banks 60 Skylounge quietly and purposefully sliced through the water as we headed around the point. In the more open waters of the bay, a short 3-foot chop building ahead was nearly imperceptible as we ran our numbers. The GB60 accelerated smoothly with little or no bowrise. It carved turns easily, a slight lean barely perceptible because of its low center of gravity. There was little or no bow spray as the boat cut through the chop and not a drop reached the windshield.
In the Skylounge, the pod-style helm is technologically advanced but with traditional touches.
High-tech construction is combined with a unique warped hull form on the GB60. A fine entry cuts through the water, which then streams along the hull in an even, unencumbered fashion. There are no hard chines, strakes or tunnels to disturb water flow as the hull transitions smoothly and flattens aft to around 8 degrees of deadrise. The result is a semi-displacement hull that moves cleanly through the water and allows a boat with a lot of accommodation space to still be fast and efficient. Full-displacement hulls require effort to push water out of the way. Planing hulls expend propulsion energy trying to lift the boat out of the water. Neither of these issues occurs with the GB60, which is designed to slice easily through the water. With twin Volvo Penta D13-800 diesels turning shafts, the GB60 cruised easily at 22 knots, where the D13s burned 49.5 gph, for a range of 613 miles. Slowing to 19 to 20 knots brought the fuel burn below 40 gph
and increased range by another 100 miles. Top speed was a respectable 28 knots, but buyers looking for a faster top speed should know that manufacturer tests with larger engines reached a top speed of 36 knots. At trawler speeds, the 60 has remarkable range. Even in our somewhat lumpy test conditions, at 10 knots the yacht’s range was 1,661 miles; reducing speed to 8 knots pushed its range beyond 2,500 miles. Our test boat had Volvo Penta D13-800s, but D13-900s will soon be standard, and Grand Banks will offer D13-1000s and D13 IPS 1200s as options. Few builders offer both IPS and shaft options on the same boat, and by doing so Grand Banks can satisfy buyers regardless of their preferred drive type. Forward visibility is excellent from the helm, whose teak-clad wheel is centered and controls are within easy reach. An electronics package features twin Garmin 8617 MFD flat panels connected to a variety of devices. Rear visibility is excellent via a camera feed on the MFDs, and the Yacht Controller helps when docking; a cockpit station is another option. Opening windows on both sides and sliding hatches overhead deliver good ventilation to the captain and companion. The Skylounge has 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom and covers 134 square feet, as measured by my Bosch 165 laser tape measure. It contains the helm, a large seating area with a table, and a day head. Access is via an internal SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2019 27

Abundant high-quality teak can be found everywhere on the yacht. The skylounge (top left) includes a day head, while the main cabin (top right and bottom left) includes two seating areas and a forward galley. Belowdecks are three cabins and two heads.
Evolution of a Brand
In 2014 Grand Banks purchased Palm Beach Motor Yachts and brought Palm Beach founder Mark Richards in as CEO. In addition to being an accomplished boat builder, Richards is a skilled racing sailor who has more Sydney to Hobart wins than any other skipper. His racing background and pursuit of perfection carry over into the way he builds boats. Having known Richards for years, I can attest to his drive for performance, speed and success, and know that his reputation for fastidiousness is not unfounded. Since his takeover at Grand Banks, Richards and his team have totally overhauled the Grand Banks factory. He is so meticulous he issues vacuum cleaners to workers on the factory floor, so they can clean as they build, a move that keeps the factory tidy and eliminates construction debris inside newly delivered boats. Owing to modernized design and construction processes, new models such as the Grand Banks 60 Skylounge are fast, efficient and seaworthy. The Grand Banks 60 hull is vacuum infused with E-glass and vinylester resin and is cored above the waterline with closed-cell foam to ensure strength without adding unnecessary weight. Carbon fiber is added in structural areas for additional rigidity. The entire deck and superstructure are fully infused carbon fiber, which reduces weight aloft and ensures a low center of gravity.
stairway, and an exterior cockpit ladder is an option. A door leads aft to a large open deck that’s home to a Steelhead ES1000 davit and a 12-foot AB Aluminum RIB with a 40 hp Yamaha outboard. When the tender is lowered, the aft deck can be used for entertaining. An open flybridge with a hardtop and no day head is standard, but the climate-controlled comfort of the optional Skylounge was welcome on a muggy test day. The Skylounge is a quiet, comfortable spot to run the boat; I measured 53 decibels at idle while we waited for a bridge. The additional accommodations provide a great place to get away from dockside action and retreat, and with the day head the Skylounge provides a semiprivate extra cabin.

Grand Banks is an iconic brand that has built thousands of boats over the last 60 years, but that does not mean the builder is stuck in the past. New leadership (see Evolution of a Brand sidebar) is combining the best of new and old. The GB60 SL’s performance is modern and efficient, but at heart it is still a Grand Banks. Abundant high-quality teak flows throughout the interior, with nary a dark spot to be found. Joiner work is impeccable, and built-in furniture, contoured doors and wall panels with SPECS contrasting fabrics highlight the wood. Large salon windows bring in LOA 65 ft., 4 in. light to the fully equipped galley and its Silestone counters. Beam 19 ft., 2 in. Two galley arrangements are available: aft or forward. The aft galley Draft 4 ft., 4 in. is convenient for serving passengers in the cockpit area. The Skylounge (shafts); 3 ft., 3 in (IPS) model I tested has the galley forward and to port; the internal Displacement Skylounge stairs are opposite, beside the door to the covered sidedecks. 61,730 lbs. The forward cabin has a queen bed, a hanging locker million (Skylounge) and an opening overhead hatch for ventilation. A second head with a separate shower is accessed from the corridor. To starboard, a twin cabin features a single bunk along the hull, and a step-down cabin with a single athwartships bunk is tucked beneath the salon stairs. This cabin should be fun for kids, but the bunks are big enough for crew or other adults. A washer/dryer combo is in one of the cabinets. Quality workmanship is demonstrated throughout the boat. Highly finished interior panels and fixtures, polished stainless rails, smooth and even glass work, a well laid out engine room, and precisely run and carefully labeled wiring all show the dedication Grand Banks has to excellence. The yacht’s styling is salty and distinctively Grand Banks, yet its performance is nimble and efficient. The Grand Banks 60 Skylounge is an excellent example of combining the best of old-world craftsmanship with modern design and technology and is a serious contender for anyone looking at a boat of this size and class. engines from Mercury rumbled admirably as six of us made our way out for a test run aboard the new Hinckley Sport Boat 40C. Like many outboard-powered boats, especially those with 1,200 hp, the 40C doesn’t really like to go slow, so I asked everyone to hang on as I prepped to do some maneuvering. I slowed down to around 30 knots before carefully taking a turn into the short chop. The boat carved the turn without the least hesitation, so I turned back the other way and this time a bit harder. The 40C carved the reciprocal turn with equal ease.
THREE 400 HP R ACING
It was about this time that Jay Stockman, Hunt’s vice president, looked at me from the other side of the large helm bench we were sitting on and said, “That’s all you got? Go full throttle. She can

take it.” I looked at him dubiously, again warned everybody to hold on and cranked it all the way up beyond 40 knots. We were flying along, and I was a bit reluctant, but Stockman, a guy I’ve known for a long time, kept nodding in the affirmative and calling me out with a mischievous look in his eyes. At about 45 knots — the boat reached a top speed of 46 knots with the optional Mercury 400Rs, where it felt solid and comfortable — I turned steeply to starboard and the boat dug in and carved a nice clean loop, gently cutting through its own wake. I spun the

wheel hard over to port this time, pulled it as tightly as I could, and the boat evenly, gracefully and swiftly carved a reciprocal turn and formed a nice figureeight with its wake. There was not a bit of side slip or cavitation as we spun tight donuts at better than 40 knots. This was fun! I whirled around repeatedly, and no matter how fast the boat was going or how hard I turned, the Hinckley Sport Boat 40C easily spun and cut and never budged. It performed like a ski boat despite its length of more than 40 feet and weight of 19,000 pounds. At 25 knots the triple Mercury 400R outboards were burning a combined 32 gph, or 1.3 gpm, yielding a range of 312 miles. Thirtyone knots bumped the burn to 54 gph, but that is just 1.44 gpm, for a 282-mile range with a 10 percent reserve. These are respectable test numbers. Hinckley is a boat builder known for its soft and flowing sheer lines, velvety smooth varnish, deep blue hulls and classic good looks. It has been building boats since 1928, and yet an old company does not necessarily mean old technology. Its brand is dedicated not just to aesthetics but to performance and innovation. Hinckley introduced Jet Drives in its Picnic Boats and is one of the first builders to offer joysticks. When designing its new outboard boats, company designers didn’t simply reinforce a swim platform so they could bolt engines onto an existing hull; they started from scratch. They built a modern, efficient boat that has the quality construction and finish Hinckley is known for, but with the speed and agility outboard motors are capable of. Company management knew these outboard-powered boats would be different, so they designated a new category: Hinckley Sport Boats. The Hinckley Sport Boat 40C is the first in this series and stands out in many ways. Hinckley Sport Boats are designed to be light and fast but with the strength and seakeeping ability to allow them to travel offshore safely and comfortably. The Sport Boat 40C utilizes vacuum infusion but takes it a step further by incorporating epoxy resins and modern high-tech materials. The vessel is cored with closed-cell foam and the hull is fully infused carbon epoxy with Kevlar reinforcement on the striking surfaces. The stringer grid inside the hull is bagged and singular bonded to the hull to create a monocoque structure. The entire hull is then post-cured in a state-of-the-art 80-foot-long digital oven. Not only does this process create a hull that is strong yet light, but it reduces or eliminates styrene emissions, so it is better for the workers and the environment. The C in 40C stands for center console, which the boat is, though the portside deck is raised to help in certain docking situations and to improve headroom below. The single entrance to the bow — the only forward walkup is to starboard — expands its seating area. Below is a substantial cabin that features a queensize bed and a galley with a refrigerator, an electric burner and a microwave. A head with a separate shower compartment shares the space. There is ample room for a couple to relax for an evening or take a weekend getaway. On deck is room for guests and enough drink holders and handholds to keep people secure — perhaps while their test captain runs the boat in circles at high speed. A few of our group of six sat up front in the U-shaped seating, where a

removable table makes the area a dining spot. It’s safe and comfortable there, but it got a bit windy when we were really cranking along. Bolstered helm seating and footrests accommodate at least three people, either standing or sitting, in an area that has great all-around visibility. A centerline wheel and engine controls are within easy reach, as are the twin Garmin 7616xsv MFDs. Helm occupants are protected from the wind by a windshield and a hard top, but the breeze can come around the sides, and air conditioning vents are there for really hot days. Aft of the helm is a console that can be configured in different ways, including with options such as an electric grill, a refrigerator, an ice-maker, a baitwell, a sink and trash bins. Foldout transom seating behind it can be covered by a retractable SureShade awning. Big-boat systems such as C-Zone and a bow thruster are standard, as are artisanal teak accents that look like varnished wood but don’t require refinishing. A Seakeeper 3 gyro is an option that our test boat had. In 2013 Scout Partners LLC, the parent company of Hinckley,
Garmin MFDs dominate the helm dash and give the captain total control of the boat’s systems. Belowdecks, a galley, berth and head share a surprisingly ample space.

THE CERULS CALL LAS VEGAS HOME — their boat, a 2004 Selene 47, is called Pairadice in a nod to their hometown — but keep their yacht in Portland, Ore., so a summer cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers made as much sense to them as the trips they’d already taken to British Columbia and Alaska. We asked them about their time on the rivers, so we’ll let their words and photos tell the story. If you want to read more about their adventures, visit mvpairadice.blogspot.com. Sea: What is your cruising background? Ceruls: John served in the Navy for 20 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. He spent most of his time on aircraft carriers, with plenty of blue-water operations throughout the world. John and I met in 2005. I had a sailing background from Michigan and Lake Mead in Nevada. I also owned various lake boats over the years. Meanwhile, John owned boats in Washington and California while in the Navy, and in the Southwest after retiring from the military. Upon retiring again in 2015, we purchased Pairadice, and since then we have put over 10,000 nautical miles on her own hull. The first cruise was seven months in 2016 throughout the Inside Passage of British Columbia. In 2017 we took another seven-month cruise throughout southeast Alaska. Next year we plan to head south along the West Coast, into Mexico and up the Sea of Cortez before hauling out for some yard work during the summer of 2020. After that we will continue south to the Panama Canal and into the Gulf of Mexico.

Ultimately, the Great U and possibly the Great Loop are possibilities. Where did the idea for a river cruise come from? We have a bucket list. Both of us are in our 60s. Our motto is “go for adventure.” We started with a bareboat charter out of Anacortes — learning SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2019 35

OREGON OREGON we could work together handling a boat of this size — then attended Trawlerfest and a Selene rendezvous. We accomplished the Canadian Inside Passage in 2016 and Alaska in 2017. We are moored on Hayden Island at Salpare Bay Marina, so it made sense to get some experience traversing the locks on the Columbia River prior to heading south to Mexico … and yet further through the Panama Canal. Was planning and provisioning for this cruise different than previous trips you’ve made? You have to do the research regarding grocery and drugstores. On this cruise we did not run the large freezer. Planning and provisioning is a work in progress. I am constantly removing clothes, utensils and extraneous baggage that goes unused. My lists have lists! One thing that has helped is using a black sharpie to date the top of the canned goods, in order to rotate the stock. How many miles did you put under the hull in total? Total miles in three years amount to 11,000. The Columbia River/Snake River cruise east and back was 900 miles, from Portland to Clarkston, Wash., and back to Portland using the same route. There were several locks you had to traverse. Were you able to practice
Useful Info Anyone thinking of making a similar journey along the Columbia and Snake rivers needs to conduct a lot of research, but here are a few tidbits to stoke the imagination. Along the Columbia River, the locks, dams and bridges are at the following markers:
1. Bonneville Dam and Lock, Milepost 145
2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Dalles Dam and Lock, Milepost 192 Celilo Railroad Bridge, Milepost 199 John Day Dam and Lock, Milepost 218 McNary Dam and Lock, Milepost 294 Kalan Bridge, Milepost 323 Upper Columbia River RR Bridge, Milepost 328
Along the Snake River, be prepared to tackle the following obstacles:
8. Burlington Northern SF Snake River RR Bridge, Milepost 2
9. Ice Harbor Dam and Lock, Milepost 10 10. Lower Monumental Dam and Lock, Milepost 42

for that? How was the overall locking experience? We did not practice, but we received advice from other mariners who have accomplished it. They also provided us with a spreadsheet of info for all eight locks: bridge lifts, VHF channels, call signs, mileposts and phone numbers. The info proved to be very helpful! We also traveled with our friends Tom and Kay on Alaskan Sea-Duction. Both boats have an LOA of 52 feet. We took it slow and all came through uneventful. Our route included four locks/dams on the Columbia River, four more locks/ dams on the Snake River and four bridge lifts. Our destination was Hells Canyon in Washington. And we did it all again getting back to our homeport. Was there anything you prepared for that didn’t actually come to pass? Yes. We were actually overprepared for the locks. We expected to use more lines than necessary. One midship line is plenty! Gloves and life jackets are mandatory. Each time going through a lock made the next one easier. Communicating with the lockmaster on the VHF is very important. Do boaters share the rivers with vessels/equipment/adventurers that they don’t have to worry about in

Beacon Rock State Park (top, right and below) is definitely worth a stop. The crews of Pairadice and Alaskan Sea-Duction made it a two-night stop. On a jetboat tour of Hells Canyon, the crews spotted big horn sheep.

more open waters? Heck yes! You still have commercial traffic, fishermen, nets, small watercraft, debris, kayakers, PWCs, etc. The Hood River area was by far the most hazardous. This area is world famous for the kiteboarders, sailboarders and light sailboats. When the wind is up, it’s not uncommon for thousands of them to be on the river, with little regard to larger craft. The mystery of other boaters’ intentions … go figure. You can’t be too careful! Did you experience anything unexpected? How did you handle it? Upon arriving at our destination, which was Hells Canyon Resort on the Snake River, we were greeted by a local gentleman on the dock who cautioned us to follow the “trench” due to shallow water. Alaskan Sea-Duction went in first. It was so shallow that Tom brought the boat in perpendicular to the transient dock and turned a hard 90 degrees for a starboard tie. Remaining in VHF radio communication, we followed but did bottom out. Once secure, Tom dropped his dinghy with a depthfinder and learned exactly what the bottom was like. We walked both boats forward into deeper water for the duration of our visit. We used the dinghy to map out our exit. As irony would have it, we were parked right next to a decommissioned dredge, which hadn’t operated in years. And then there was the time the skipper moored in front of us fell off his boat onto the dock. We all sprang into action, busting out the first aid gear, packing the laceration on his leg and calling 9-1-1 for the medics! We made sure he had I.D. for transport. The EMTs complimented us on our skills. One of his crew stayed behind to move his boat, so I quickly became his deckhand. When the injured boat owner returned five hours later — with 60-some stiches in his wounded
leg — we realized he also had a broken arm! We never even learned his name. What were a few of your favorite sights/sounds/stops? Favorites? That’s a difficult one. Everywhere we stopped was so unique and special. Everywhere we seem to meet up with guys John talks to on Trawler Forum (TF). With the aid of AIS, there is always someone there to greet us for dockline handling and refreshments of Alaskan Amber. Port of Kennewick, Wash., was no exception. The transient dock is on Clover Island and the harbormasters are the best,

complete with swag! We stayed twice, once upriver and once downriver. Trawler Forum buddies hosted an amazing rib dinner at their home. Later we took our boat out for the July 4 fireworks show on the river. Beacon Rock State Park was another favorite. We stayed two nights in order to spend a day exploring and hiking. The trail up Beacon Rock was built in 1918, has 54 switchbacks and the view is from 800 feet above sea level. It’s spectacular! We always share a “happy hour” with anyone who wants
to partake, as well as a nice grilled dinner on the dock, regardless of where we are. We also really enjoyed the KOA Park and Marina at Boyer Park on the Snake River. It is located between Little Goose Dam & Lock and Lower Granite Dam & Lock, which are the last two locks when one is heading east. Kay and I enjoyed long walks with the dog while the guys played horseshoes in the beautiful, huge park. The restaurant and gift shop hosts do a great job. Did you visit any sites of historical importance? I look for history everywhere we go. Other boaters tease me about being the “historian,” but I think of myself as a “photo journalist for fun.” This summer’s cruise east on the Columbia River and through most of the Snake River was all about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Although the marina in Clarkston left a bit to be desired — we personally repaired the dock — we visited the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and enjoyed the jetboat tour with Snake Dancer Excursions. There we visited a museum with a root cellar and saw native petroglyphs. Hells Canyon Resort and Marina has a river walkway that relates the tales of the original 1804–1806 expedition with explanations and pictographs from the actual Lewis and Clark journals. The history is so abundant, it is very time consuming to record it all. Perhaps something for my book. If you were going to write the definitive guide to cruising America’s big rivers, what would you call it? “The Ups and Downs of Cruising American’s Waterways.” If you were to summarize your trip in one tweet, what would it say? Why aren’t more boaters cruising the rivers? SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2019 39

THE QUESTION IS NO LONGER
“WHY A CAT?” BUT RATHER
WHICH CAT? Sunreef 68 Power
M U LT I H U L L S G O M A I N S T R E A M BY ZUZANA PROCHAZK A ///////////////////////////////////////
SIX YEARS AGO I wrote a story about power catamarans for Sea, most of which centered on why anyone should give a cat a chance. This story represents an update of the older story. Now, before you turn the page, understand that even I didn’t recognize my original story when I reread it. Just over a half a decade ago, power cats were trying to gain acceptance in the market. Sure, they came in lots of shapes and sizes, but they still had an image problem and were considered newfangled and weird. JourneyCat 47 LRC
Leopard 43 ArrowCat 325RS
Fast forward a few years and power cats are gobbling up dock space. Other than pontoon boats — which, one could argue, are also power cats — catamarans are the fastest growing segment of the boating market. This may be because they have some inherent advantages, including more deck and interior space per foot than monohulls, a shallower draft, and stability underway and at rest in rolly anchorages. Twin screws set wide apart enhance maneuverability around the docks, even without a bow thruster. Finally, consider fuel economy. Cats don’t drag a keel through the water, so on average they’re 20 to 30 percent more fuel efficient. With their newfound momentum, including major changes in styling, comfort, customization and range, cats no longer have to be justified. But an interested buyer’s choice will depend on how and where he boats, so let’s take a look at the cruisability of some of the latest models.
COASTAL COUGARS
Power cats in the 20- to 35-foot range have enjoyed the longest reign. Numerous brands including Glacier Bay, World Cat and ArrowCat have long pitched their speed and fishability. Two hulls provide a smooth ride to where the fish are biting and a steady casting platform that reduces fatigue and extends outings. The new hulls have been designed from scratch for less pounding and better performance, and most can cruise 200 to 400 miles. World Cat, which now markets more than a dozen models from 23 to 32 feet, offers center and dual-console models and branded Glacier Bay cuddy cabin designs. The new boats are narrower, so buyers can find a slip more easily, and lighter, so they can go farther on a tank. They can also run at 30 knots, so SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2019

WHICH CAT? anglers can fish in the morning and still get to their honey-do list in the afternoon. ArrowCat offers three models from 32 to 42 feet and concentrates on fit and finish, a smooth ride, plentiful cruising amenities and a top speed of 50 mph on its 32-footer. The builder highlights strength and seaworthiness for boaters who put safety at the top of their must-have list. Because more of the coastal designs are reaching farther, a major focus has been on fuel economy. Larry Graf, founder of Aspen Catamarans, dialed that in when he created a line of power cats with only one engine. His power proa design includes two asymmetrical hulls, one of which holds a single Volvo Penta diesel. The 32-foot C100 has a 500-mile range at 9 knots and a 300-mile range at 20 knots. In addition, this model offers a galley, a dinette, a double berth and a head.
put the boat back in the water, and continued around Florida and up to Annapolis, Md. That’s not something one does in a barebones camper. Not everyone has the time to cruise the perimeter of the country, but since smaller Aspens and other catamarans are trailerable, cruising is redefined. “Some of our owners coastal cruise, then pull the boat with a three-quarter-ton pickup and live in it on land like an RV, and then put it back in the water,” Graf said. For something completely different and truly head-turning in this segment, there’s Sunreef Yachts, a Polish builder of large luxury catamarans from 50 to 150 feet. An exception to its big multihulls is its new ferocious feline: the 40 Open. This is a dayboat on steroids, with twin 860 hp engines (upgraded) and a top speed of 60
Aspen C120
“Our people are adventure boaters who want to get there quickly,” Graf said. “About half never fish and the other half fish occasionally or seriously.” Comfort may be best demonstrated by a 40-foot Aspen C120 that took a 10,000mile tour (sort of). From 2017 to 2018, owners David and Sue Ellen sailed from Anacortes to Alaska, then back down and on to the Sea of Cortez. They then trucked the boat across to the Gulf Coast of Texas, 42
knots. With smaller engines and a moderate speed, the 40 Open has a range of more than 600 miles, presumably made possible by a retractable hydrofoil system that lifts the boat above the water when it reaches faster than 25 knots. The lateral bulwarks of the awardwinning 40 Open fold out and increase the deck space when it’s time to lounge, play or party. An outdoor galley allows for great entertaining too, but it’s the boat’s
aggressive and avant garde styling that is its greatest differentiator and may just land it a spot in the next James Bond movie.
MIDR ANGE MANXES
There’s a bit of crossover around the 40-foot mark. Aspen has a 40-footer and ArrowCat’s flagship is 42 feet as both companies reach up to the mid-market. However, most of this segment is dominated by production builders such as Leopard, Lagoon and Fountaine Pajot. South African builder Robertson & Caine offers Leopard Catamarans, which have been a fixture in the sailing cat charter trade for decades. Many of their earlier sailing models were Morrelli & Melvin designs that went to The Moorings and Sunsail. Leveraging its expertise, Leopard has now added power cats to its line, which can be chartered in exotic locations from Croatia to the British Virgin Islands. I had the good fortune to test a Leopard 43 PC for a week in the BVI, and I became a convert from sail to power and monohull to multi. Cruising at 18 knots, we covered three snorkel spots in a day and then grilled dinner on the flybridge while our underwater lights glowed. The fuel bill at the end of the charter was a welcome surprise: about $300 for the week as we crisscrossed the islands. For anyone considering a specific boat, it’s nice to be able to test it for more than an afternoon. Spending a week with a design really brings its strengths and weaknesses to light. For example, the hydraulic swim platform on the Leopard 51 PC can help people with limited mobility get in and out of the water. That’s something that isn’t top of mind at a boat show, so it’s nice to be able to undertake a try-before-you-buy charter. Kurt Jerman, president of West Coast Multihulls in San Diego, represents Fountaine Pajot and also works with charter companies. Jerman, who’s about to debut this coast’s first FP 44 MY, noted that the French builder is focused on boats that have become sleeker and narrower and that offer better layouts than a few years ago. “Fountaine Pajot rebranded their power cat line from ‘trawler’ to ‘motoryacht,’ and

fuel tanks, so owners can go farther and stay longer. Also, “elegance” has entered the power cat vocabulary, and nobody is roughing it.
OCEAN-CROSSING OCELOTS
Power cats in the 40-foot range, including models from Fountaine Pajot and Aquila, have had success in charter and are branching out into the recreational market, thanks to outdoor entertainment areas and well-appointed main cabins
that helped with market perception,” Jerman said. “Their line is composed of three models, 37 to 44 feet, with engines up to 300 hp that will deliver 18- to 20-knot speeds.” These aren’t slow boats, which the trawler moniker implied. Better hull shapes have resulted in greater fuel economy, and these midrange designs can cruise farther. “The FP 44 has a 1,000-mile range, so it’ll get you from California to Cabo or up to Seattle,” Jerman said. “There’s a smoother ride too.” Another line interested parties can check out in charter is Aquila. Built in China and represented in the U.S. by MarineMax, Aquila offers three models, from 36 to 48 feet. The entry model is basically an outboard-powered express cruiser that is meant for quick runs to Catalina or a couple cruising the Great Loop. The two larger models can be found in charter but are growing in private ownership on the West Coast as people look for boats that can explore farther afield. Exploring farther afield is no issue for the Horizon Yachts PC series, which is composed of four models: 52, 60, 65 and 74. With open and enclosed flybridge versions, multiple stateroom options and cruising amenities borrowed from the builder’s experience with its luxury yacht lines, Horizon’s PC models can accommodate multiple people on extended cruises. Even the smallest in the lineup can reach more than 1,000 miles at trawler speeds. A semi-production brand unlikely to be found in charter is Journey Catamarans. Journey’s protruding wave-piercing hulls extend the waterline and reduce hobby-horsing. The cats reach top speeds around 20 knots, but at half that their range exceeds 1,000 miles, which makes them a good fit for adventurous boaters. Part of the appeal of this segment is the models’ ancillary equipment. Midrange power cats come with generators, water-makers, solar panels, and larger battery banks and
Larger than 60 feet or so, cats become luxurious superyachts with nearly unlimited amenities and a long range, so they can go about anywhere. Many of these large multihulls are in crewed charter service, and since they offer approximately 1.2 times the living space of a monohull, they function like superyachts at a lower length overall. Take the soon-to-be-launched Sunreef 80, which seems more like a 96-foot monohull. Per the company’s president and founder, Francis Lapp, the 80 is a multihull yacht for long cruises in comfort that combines superyacht living spaces with enhanced seaworthiness. Equipped with an aft garage and a large swim platform, the 80 has room for a dinghy, a PWC and plenty of water toys, which are popular with charter guests and owners alike. This vessel is also highly customizable with multiple layouts, including a full-beam master suite in the bow. The yacht’s flybridge has vast lounging areas, a Jacuzzi and a bar, and it is powered by twin diesels that can be upgraded to 1,200 hp each. With these enormous engines, the boat will reach 24 knots. It carries more than 4,000 gallons of fuel, which provides a range up to 3,500 SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2019 43

nautical miles (depending on speed, conditions and engine option). French production builder Lagoon recently entered this market with two models, a 630MY and the Seventy8. With these models, Lagoon is definitely reaching beyond the basics of white fiberglass charter boats up to a more luxurious owner experience. “The 630 is for people who are tired of burning fuel and money, and tired of having professional crew on board,” said Fred Signat, director of Lagoon America. “An experienced couple can run this boat on their own, and the sense of privacy from being self-sufficient is alluring.” The 63-footer is powered by either 260 hp or 300 hp Volvo Penta diesels and can cross the Atlantic. The Seventy8, with twin 580 hp John Deere diesels, can cross the Pacific. On deck, the Seventy8 is the size of a tennis court and the wow factor is the master suite, which has its own terrace that’s created when a section of the starboard hull is opened and lowered to the waterline. That’s definitely superyacht stuff. Additional evolutions include improved deck layouts that keep the main deck and salon on the same level and more living space. The very angular Sunreef 68 — 3,000-mile range and a top speed of 25 knots — has nearly 1,000 square feet of room and 44

a custom interior design. Green features are popular too and include natural air circulation systems to cut down on traditional air conditioning, LED lighting, wind generators, water turbines and sustainable interior materials. Advanced technology, such as digital switching systems and zone-controlled audio, have become nearly standard.

Part of the recent growth of the power cat market is attributable to the original builders who stayed the course long enough for models to turn over into the brokerage market where they’ve became available to a larger swath of the boating population. More importantly, cats have held their resale value, which has huge appeal. Also, more sailing cat builders realized where the market was headed and switched gears to power, so there are simply more models to choose from. That said, Signat thinks the real growth in power cats is still on the horizon. “I’m convinced there’s a huge market out there but none of us have yet built the exact boat for it,” he said. “Lagoon is a volume builder that needs large opportunities, so we try to create them. For example, when we first put a flybridge on our 440 sailing cat, everyone said it was crazy. Now you see them everywhere. When the power cat market is ready, we’ll be there in force.”

So you own a 50-foot boat and are wondering why you’d ever need to read a feature story about yacht chartering. Well, chartering is a great way to go boating in a different part of the world without owning a globetrotting vessel and having oodles of time. Chartering means different things to different people. Some want to go it alone and prefer a bareboat, and more charter companies, such as The Moorings and MarineMax Vacations, are offering power options, including monohulls and catamarans from 38 to 58 feet available on a bareboat basis. Others want to enjoy a luxury crewed experience on a large yacht, preferring to take multiple generations of family and friends and focusing on fun rather than the details of running the boat. Both kinds of chartering have dos and don’ts to keep in mind.
Crewed Luxury Charter Crewed charters provide a staff who can help you enjoy the vacation. Smaller boats — say less than 60 feet — will usually have at least a captain and sometimes a chef. Larger vessels, from 60 to 200 feet, will have a full staff that includes a captain, a mate or deckhand, a chef and a stewardess. Misty Johnston, owner of Northrop-Johnson Yacht Charters in Rhode Island (not affiliated with Northrop & Johnson Yachts), is a certified charter broker who works with yachts from 50 to 200 feet. She said these yachts usually carry up to 12 passengers and comply with SOLAS, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, a maritime treaty that sets minimum safety standards in the construction, equipment and operation of ships. This industry of superyacht charters isn’t specifically licensed but is self-policing. Such high-end yachts are part of a database called YACHTFOLIO, which specialized brokers access to find vessels that offer charter in different parts of the world. Brokers who work with luxury crewed charters typically belong to one or many professional associations, including AYCA (American Yacht Charter Association), CYBA (Caribbean Yacht Brokers Association) and IYBA (International Yacht Brokers Association). To undertake a large yacht charter, start by finding a broker via one of these organizations.
Before the Charter
Your work begins before you even talk to the first broker. First, decide where you want to go. Most charter yachts run a circuit. For example, yachts work the Caribbean in the winter and then head up to New England or to the Mediterranean in the summer. The Med also splits into the western side (Spain, France and Italy) and the eastern side (Croatia and Greece). Some yachts stay in the Pacific to work French Polynesia and SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2019 47
+ Sea feature Charter new.indd 47
11/28/18 7:40 AM
CHARTER CHAT Fiji or East Asia, while others wander up to Mexico and Alaska. Not all yachts are flagged to legally work in all places, so you need to decide what you want to see. “About five percent of these yachts aren’t on a circuit,” Johnston said. “They’re usually on some form of circumnavigation and you can charter a leg of the journey.” Next, decide the budget and the type and size of the yacht. Yachting Partners International (YPI) charter director Annemarie Gathercole said, “YPI charters yachts of all size, from 50 to 500 feet. If
you’re not sure what suits you, your broker will advise. Would you prefer to charter a motoryacht or a sailing yacht, something classic in style or slick and contemporary? Your broker can work with you to find the best fit for your group.” “Work with someone who is with a reputable firm and a member of one or all of the governing associations: MYBA, IYBA, CYBA, etc.,” said Kimberly Daubner, a charter broker with Northrop & Johnson in San Diego. “A knowledgeable charter broker travels to charter yacht shows and steps aboard the yachts, inspecting the details, interviewing crew and creating a personal database from which they can pull.”
Consider your group. How many people? What are their ages and energy levels? The limit is usually 12, but if the group consists of a mix of kids, grandkids and grandparents, the broker will need to know, so he can recommend a yacht that specializes in multigenerational guest experiences. You’ll also want to give the broker information about how active or sedentary your group is and the needs of the kids. “Some yachts are more suited to families with small children, with nanny accommodation, baby equipment and safety features,” Gathercole said, “while others are
loaded with the latest water toys, ideal for teenagers and young adults.” You’ll be asked to complete a preferences questionnaire that asks for the details of your expectations. Things to convey include guest mobility issues and meal requirements. For example, Brazilians like their main meal to be a very late dinner, some people don’t care for breakfast, others want top-shelf liquor, some want to eat off the boat often, etc. Per Johnston, “The crew will need to know ahead of time if you’ll want to eat in Michelin-rated restaurants in France, visit boutique wineries in Croatia, go sightseeing in Greece, or just enjoy time aboard with an excellent chef
and lots of water toys.” A good broker will be able to help with all of these issues, provide a sample itinerary and the layout of the yacht, and have crew arrange for time ashore. “An evening at a Greek taverna can be about much more than the food for those who like to experience the local lifestyle,” Johnston said. Once such details are covered, you’ll need to sign a contract that is a binding document between two individuals: the principal charterer and the owner of the yacht (usually represented by an agent). At this time, you’ll need to pay a 50 percent deposit, with the balance usually due four to six weeks before the charter date. The deposit is held in the owner’s agent’s escrow account, and a portion will be released to pay for fuel and provisioning in advance. Then, another 50 percent will be released to the owner upon successful boarding completion. This is for your protection, so the yacht is where it’s supposed to be and when for your vacation. You’ll hear the term APA (advanced provisioning allowance), which covers food, drink, fuel, berthing/mooring costs, customs fees, communications, etc. It’s usually 30 to 50 percent of the base fee of the charter. APA is payable in advance of a yacht charter at the same time as the initial charter fee and is usually handled via bank transfer. Some yachts, specifically ones that operate in the British Virgin Islands, are priced on a “plus-all” basis, which is, more or less, all-inclusive. The BVI is a small area, so food and fuel costs are somewhat predictable, which is why plus-all works here. Other areas will have a base plus expenses that include transport costs (APA) and tax (VAT), which varies by location, from 4 to 22 percent. Due to such costs and extras, Liz Howard of Fraser Yachts in San Diego will often break everything into three payments, if the charter is booked more than a year in advance.

supply more of that activity, food, entertainment or whatever. This is your charter and most requests — unless they affect the safety of the guests, crew or vessel — will generally be accommodated. Crews that maximize the fun are often followed by guests even if they switch vessels in the future. A crew that goes the extra mile to mix things up can be invaluable, especially on charters with kids. “Themed dinners are big now,” Johnston said. “Like Mexican fiestas or all-white nights.” The best thing to do during the cruise is just enjoy and let the crew know what you’d like more or less of. Also, check on the tab, so you know how your budget is doing. The captain keeps a running expense log and will show it to you upon request (along with receipts), to give you control and to avoid any nasty surprises. “A private yacht is often compared to a

After the Cruise
With the charter complete, the captain will sit down with the principal charterer
and review the expenses. Most fees are paid in euros or U.S. dollars, and if you exceed your APA, you’ll need to settle up. Crew gratuity may be left in cash or wired after the trip. If satisfied, expect to pay 10 to 20 percent of the base fee of the charter in tips in the U.S., the Caribbean and the Bahamas. European charters usually garner 5 to 15 percent, because tipping norms differ there. Alexia Lucas, owner of Virgin Motor Yachts (VMY) in the BVI, tries to set customer expectations early. “We try to coach the people regarding end-of-charter expenses,” she said. “No surprises usually leads to repeat customers.” The broker will typically review the trip with you and perhaps help plan your next one. “Feedback is usually very positive in relation to both the yacht itself and to the crew and captain,” Gathercole said. “Many SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2019 49

guests choose to return to the same yacht year on year.” That’s a sentiment with which Howard concurred. “I can safely say that I have never had a first-time charterer depart from a charter underwhelmed. That said, crew are the most important piece of a successful charter.” The importance of a well-matched broker can’t be overestimated, either, Howard said. “Let’s face it, anybody can look at pretty pictures of yachts online and say, ‘I like that one.’ This process does not usually go well for the charterer. Using a qualified charter broker does not cost the charterer anything but leaves them far better served and protected.”
Bareboat Charter A bareboat charter is simultaneously more straightforward but also perhaps more work than a crewed charter. The opportunities are many. Numerous charter companies have bases in different parts of the world, and while most of them focus on sailboats, more powerboats are popping up. Depending on the location, some charter companies focus more on power than sail, such as Anacortes Yacht Charters and NW Explorations in the Pacific Northwest and VMY in the Caribbean. The nice thing about chartering a power catamaran, whether in the BVI or Croatia, is that you’ll be able to cover more territory in less time and won’t need any wind to do so.
Same as with a crewed charter, decide where to go, how many people to bring and what you want to do. Then contact the charter company for the availability of powerboats, the timing of high and low seasons — prices vary, and in some areas charter companies take a break during hurricane season — and the costs. You’ll be asked to produce a boating resume and/ or complete forms regarding your boating experience. If you aren’t sure of your skills or want more time to focus on family, you can ask for a local captain to run the boat and suggest an itinerary. The captain will stay aboard and will be an added expense. A 50 percent deposit is due at the time of booking, with the balance due four to six weeks prior to the charter. Barbara Jones, a charter broker who works with bareboat and flotilla charters, recommends everybody carefully consider the number of people to take. “Just because a boat is rated to sleep 10 people doesn’t mean you should pack in that many,” she said. “Comfort is about more than the number of beds. It’s about having to share a head, levels of cleanliness and privacy. Fewer people usually translate to less stress.” You don’t need to use a broker. Most companies have a toll-free number where agents will help select a yacht based on group size and budget. Larger companies offer a fairly predictable product with wellequipped and maintained boats, accessible bases and informed base managers. Where you’ll want to use a broker, according to Jones, is for non-standard fleets, exotic locations or shoulder seasons — areas where a broker’s knowledge of the fleets, weather and itineraries are most valuable. Lucas of VMY says lead time for bareboat charters is six months, on average, for non-holiday times. To book Christmas, New Year’s or Spring Break weeks, expect to book up to a year in advance. If you’re the captain, keep a few things in mind. First, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the cruising grounds, and that means reviewing charts and learning about the area so you can serve as a cruise director. Also, consider the dynamic of

CHARTER CHAT being the one in charge and how family and friends will react. Will they be able to help you run the boat, cook, lift stuff? Will they be keen on taking orders from dad? Professional captains have the difficult job of managing guests, but they usually benefit from a certain amount of deference regarding the operation of the boat — deference that may not extend to you.
Sit down with your crew on the first evening and examine everyone’s expectations, because it’s their vacation too.
During the Charter
The first day of a charter is usually hectic for a bareboat captain but a hurry-up-andwait situation for crew. If kids are involved, arrange for their entertainment so you can focus on the chart briefing and technical checkout of the vessel. Ask lots of questions, take notes and pictures, and maybe even record the briefings on your phone, because that first day is long and filled with more information than one can remember. Ask for toys — kayaks, SUPs, etc., that will be an additional charge — and a cockpit cooler to keep drinks in, so you don’t need to open the refrigerator frequently and therefore strain the batteries. Have your checkout manager go over every system including charging and monitoring batteries, water-maker operations, generator start/stop, etc. Start the engines, including the dinghy’s outboard, and test the windlass. Inquire about the location of the breaker for certain systems such as the windlass or the electric dinghy davit. Turn on the electronics and make sure they display in English and in feet. If you’ll be moving between different countries/islands, be sure you know the check-in/out procedures and locations of customs and immigration offices. Take note of the fuel and water levels before departing the dock. Armed with charts and local knowledge from the chart briefing, you’ll be on your own. That means you’ll have to manage water, power, and trash and set an itinerary. You’ll need to set expectations, too, for what can and cannot be done. In some cases, you’ll need to remind guests they’re on a boat and the conveniences of home may not be available. Opt for “partial” provisioning from the base. That way, there will be some food
aboard for the start of the vacation and the heavy stuff such as water and ice will have been carried aboard by others. Don’t take full provisioning, because you’ll want to eat out and won’t know the group’s preferences yet; plus, it’s cheaper to provision along the way. Bring cash in smaller bills. Nobody wants to change a $100 bill for a loaf of bread. Decide on rules for yourself too. When does the party start? In some cases, that means no beer until the anchor’s down. Do you have a plan in case of an emergency, whether the batteries go flat or there’s an injury aboard? How will you manage conflict? Can you trust yourself not to bark orders even when there’s an urgent need for something to be done? The best thing is to sit down with your crew on the first evening and examine everyone’s expectations, because it’s their vacation too. If you have a professional captain but otherwise are managing on your own, be ready to assist, whether that’s lowering a dinghy into the water, helping to drop or retrieve the anchor or cleaning up after a meal. You can also learn from a local captain, whether it’s about the operations
of the boat, the details of the location, or what there is to see and do. It may be your charter, but there’s only one captain and she has the final say, especially if it involves risk to the crew or vessel.
After the Cruise
Finishing up a bareboat charter usually involves minimal preparation. Most companies ask that you pull bed sheets and pile them and the towels in one location. Leftover provisions are usually set out on the salon table but refrigerated items can stay in the reefer. No special cleaning is needed, and the base crew handles the removal of any toys. Some bases will allow you to bring the boat to a slip while others ask you to grab a mooring and wait for the checkout crew to join you. The crew will usually dive the boat (to see if you grounded), fuel it and put it back in its slip. They will also ask you if anything broke along the way, so they can attend to it before the boat goes back out. This is also the time to tip your pro captain. Some work harder than others to make your vacation a good one, so it’s completely discretionary, but roughly $50 to $100 per day is the norm.

SHOW BOATS
IN 2006, FOOTBALL AND BOATING found themselves at a curious intersection. The Seattle Boat Show was set with dates for its 59th run when the hometown Seahawks were on a run of their own. They were having a great season and it became clear they could make it to the NFC championship game, which would fall during the show, setting up a dilemma: how to accommodate the show and the game in the same venue.
Hall, and 12 hours to move out most of the West and East halls, to make the stadium ready for the biggest Seahawks game ever.” That change in plans was but one of the many things that has changed about the boat show — the 2019 iteration runs from Jan. 25 through Feb. 2 — and the boating industry during the show’s 72-year history. A very recent change is the addition of a third location. For the second year, Bell Harbor Marina will be an official show site, joining CenturyLink Field Event Center and South Lake Union. Shuttles will run between all the sites.
“The 2006 Seattle Boat Show was very unusual and dramatic, because that was the year the Seahawks went to their first Super Bowl,” said George Harris, NMTA president. “Our dates conflicted with the playoffs, and with short notice we had to move our dates earlier so the Seahawks could host the NFC championship game. We only had six hours to move out 100 percent of the North
Despite changes through the years, stability has been a key factor in the Pacific Northwest boating industry. Fifty-seven companies have participated in more than 25 Seattle shows, including boat dealers, marine refrigeration companies, marine service and accessory

companies, sailing clubs, a sailmaker, charter companies, fishing supplies and marinas. Adding to the established lineup, new companies have entered the scene and made significant inroads. “Ranger Tugs is the best example of a ‘bit player’ to find longtime success,” Harris said. “In 2001, Fluid Motion, now doing business as Ranger Tugs, had a one-boat, 250-square-foot display with their Martini Boat. And now they are one of the best-selling brands in the country and in the top 10 of our exhibitors in terms of display size.” That makes this year the 18th for Ranger Tugs, which is admirable, but eight companies have participated in at least 50 shows. Show attendees know it’s a great place to find out what’s new all across the marine industry, but that’s because manufacturers and dealers know show attendees are going to be looking for the latest and greatest. There’s a beneficial symbiosis going on here. “We always introduce several modifications and improvements to our lineups at the Seattle Boat Show,” said Sam Bisset, the marketing and communications director at Ranger Tugs. “There is a large concentration of Ranger Tug and Cutwater Boat owners here in the Pacific Northwest. That makes the Seattle Boat Show a great time and place to debut new models, and all the fun innovations and design changes to the boats. It’s also the first place you’ll have the chance to see all of the exciting upholstery changes for the upcoming model year.” At least one large boat dealer agrees that the show is an invaluable promotional tool. “The January boat show gives our Northwest boaters a chance to see all of the brand new models and compare them, side by side with others,” said Kevin Roggenbuck, president and CEO of Lake Union Sea Ray. “The weeklong event allows us to meet new people and connect with longtime customers.” The show is a great way for vendors to assess what products the boaters really want, and it’s an opportunity to make inventory order adjustments to accommodate any trends. “Each year we are seeing more and more new show attendees that are either new to boating, or new to the

Northwest region,” Roggenbuck said. “This is very refreshing to see.” One of the things that is sure to impress attendees of the Seattle Boat Show is the variety of boats on display, from standup paddleboards to superyachts and everything in between. There is something for every boating interest. A main attraction of the Seattle Boat Show has long been its large selection of seminars. This year attendees will find new seminars related to provisioning and entertaining, technology and solar power,
drones and photography, marine signage, graphics and wraps, flotilla cruising and weather. There are also new how-to topics on purchasing a boat, boat detailing and maintenance, sail repair, redecking and engine maintenance. Always popular and back again for 2019 are the panel discussions, including Cruising Forum, Northwest Women in Boating and How to Write About Your Boating Adventures, which features a panel of successful writers, publishers and editors. New this year is a stage devoted specifically to sailing seminars. On

WATER DWELLERS Everything floats in Sullivan Bay, including the homes and the planes. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP
THE CONCEPT OF A FLOATING mobile community was once unique to British Columbia’s coast. Skiffs and motorboats functioned as transportation. With the stroke of a tugboat engine, the whole affair could vanish and reappear somewhere entirely of someone’s choosing. Once common on the coast, they have now all but disappeared, but a few still exist. Sullivan Bay Marina Resort is one of them. This relaxed and picturesque floating village is on the north side of North Broughton Island, in Sutlej Channel, 280 miles north of Vancouver. Full of character, the village got its start in 1945 when Myrtle and Bruce Collinson moved their logging camp from Kinnaird Island to the protected waters of Sullivan Bay and established a seaplane harbor, a fish camp, a store and a post office to serve mission boats, loggers, fishermen and intrepid cruisers. Until the mid-1950s it was the busiest floatplane base on the B.C. coast. The Collinsons sold out in 1957; in 1971 Pat and Lynn Finnerty purchased the
facility and converted it into a marina and grew the float-home community. A few years ago, the marina was sold to a group of Sullivan Bay floating home owners. Today Sullivan Bay Marine Resort is being managed by the friendly and energetic Debbie (Deb) Holt. Floatplanes still arrive frequently, but the community’s focus has shifted to boaters drawn by the slow pace and grand scenery — oh, and by more than 4,000 feet of moorage on wide, stable docks; 15-, 30-, 50- and 100-amp power; gasoline, diesel and propane. Visitors also find a licensed
liquor agency, a post office, a restaurant, limited Wi-Fi, a recycling center, an exercise room, showers, laundry, a library/book exchange, commercial floatplane service and an aptly named grassy Poop Deck on a separate float for pets that need to relieve themselves. There’s even the Sullivan Bay Brig, should anyone in the crew get unruly. A small but well-stocked general store offers bread, meat, and dried and tin products. Stock includes produce and dairy that is flown or barged in weekly. As a result, prices are a bit higher. But it’s the warmth and quirkiness of the village that brings people back. Some even have trouble leaving this wonderland and stay through the summer, if not longer. Don’t look for a place to hike; this is a 100 percent water-based community. Everything is on floats. To stretch their legs, visiting boaters walk the 1.3 miles of docks and check out the boats and float homes. Sullivan Bay is an extensive network of connected docks with a mix of old buildings and modern upscale homes in a residential neighborhood. Each dock is named, like streets in a city, and quaint street signs are situated at each intersection. The home styles range from coastal traditional to Seattle-inspired modern. One has a helicopter pad on its roof. Some residents have a floatplane tied at the backdoor and/or a boat moored at the front door. Regardless of the design, none seems out of place, but

they all are in sharp contrast with the lush, green surrounding wilderness. From time to time, a bear can be seen foraging the shoreline. Such was the case on one of our visits when a female black bear and her cub made an appearance on the shore behind the neighborhood of float homes; they turned over rocks in search of something to eat. The old town hall is now a cozy restaurant that offers family-style dinner specials on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Friday night prime rib is our favorite, with large cuts of perfectly prepared meat. The walls are lined with photographs and mementos from Sullivan Bay’s past. Several images feature the work of coastal legend Jim Spilsbury, whose pioneering efforts in two fields reduced up-coast isolation and earned him the Order of British Columbia, the province’s highest honor. Starting in the 1920s, Spilsbury built, installed and fixed
radios throughout the coast. In a land without wires, coastal settlements until then could communicate only by boat; radio was revolutionary. Spilsbury also founded Queen Charlotte Airlines (QCA), which became the third largest in Canada from the mid-1940s to the late ’50s. The assortment of different planes flown in by QCA are featured in restaurant. The marina also has a dock that serves as the community’s international airport, to serve chartered flights scheduled to and from Seattle, Vancouver, Campbell River and Port Hardy. This makes Sullivan Bay a perfect location for fly-in guests to join you for a portion of your cruise. The marina team will boat-sit any vessel, in case an owner needs to hop on a plane and fly home and tend to business. There is always something to do while visiting Sullivan Bay. The salmon and
bottom fishing, crabbing and prawning can be quite good, and the marina crew is always willing to point out on the chart where to try your luck. But don’t be surprised if they suggest fishing off the dock for halibut. It’s not uncommon for guest to catch dinner from the dock. An annual three-day fishing derby is held the first weekend of August. Cash prizes are awarded for the largest salmon, largest halibut and a hidden weight for any species. Even though it’s in Canada, Sullivan Bay throws a heck of a July 4 party. The celebration includes a parade along the docks during which some guests get into costume and make as much noise as possible. After the morning parade, everyone relaxes for a couple of hours and rests up for a kids fishing derby that’s followed by blindfold dinghy races. The evening’s festivities include a barbecue dinner, a live band and dancing on the dock. Moorage sells out well in advance of July 4, so reservations are a must. For the golfer, and even the non-golfer, there are evening hole-in-one and closestto-the-pin competitions at the one-hole Sullivan Bay Golf Course. The green is a small satellite dish covered with Astroturf and anchored off the end of a dock that serves as the tee. This prestigious course is rated as a single par-1 hole whose small floating green is 90 to 140 yards away, depending on the tides and current. Golf clubs and balls are provided, and anyone who hits a hole-in-one receives a free night’s moorage, while the daily closestto-the-pin winner receives fresh-baked pastries the following morning. Happy hour is an important activity in the Broughtons. Every marina has its own take on what it is. Each evening at 5 p.m. the marina crew at Sullivan Bay hosts happy hour at the covered town square. Everyone is asked to bring an appetizer to share and a favorite beverage. It’s a great way to meet new neighbors, trade boating stories and lie about the day’s fishing.

MEET COLLEEN EASTMAN Marketing Coordinator at Kenmore Air
KENMORE AIR OPERATES SCHEDULED CHARTERED sea- and land-plane service to destinations throughout western Washington and southwestern British Columbia, as well as seaplane “flightseeing” flights around Seattle. Boaters in Puget Sound are familiar with the white-andyellow planes, but how much do they really know about the floatplanes?
Many Pacific Northwest locations are only accessible via boat or seaplane, and Kenmore Air takes people to them.
Colleen Eastman is an avid boater who, with her husband, keeps their vessel in Roche Harbor. She also happens to be the marketing coordinator for Kenmore Air. She answered some of our questions about seaplanes.
have two boat hulls attached to them? EDO, the world’s oldest manufacturer of floats for seaplanes, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kenmore Air Harbor. Yes, the floats look like and act as a boat hull in order for the planes to take off and land on
Sea: Why are seaplanes such a good fit for the Pacific Northwest? Eastman: Seaplanes are the perfect fit for the Northwest mainly because of all the beautiful destinations in the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island and the vast amount of water in this region. One of our most popular flights is the Seattle Scenic Flight Tour, which is a 20-minute narrated flight that goes over the entire city and highlights all the beautiful water surrounding the city.
Seaplanes are the perfect fit for the Northwest.
Are there places in the Pacific Northwest that are only reachable via seaplane? There are a number of fishing lodges in B.C. that are accessible by boat or seaplane only. We provide regularly scheduled service to the fishing lodges all summer long. We also have a large boating community that uses our service to fly family and friends back and forth from their boats all summer long. We also fly emergency boat parts if needed. The seaplanes’ floats look an awful lot like boat hulls. What are the components of the floats, and is it fair to say the seaplanes
water. There are two floats attached to each seaplane; they are made of a lightweight metal. EDO is currently in the process of making composite floats that would be lighter in weight. In locations such as Lake Union and Victoria, what do boaters need to know about interacting with seaplanes? This past summer, along with the city of Seattle, we installed five buoys in the middle of South Lake Union that light up 10 minutes before a seaplane takes off or lands in order to alert boaters, kayakers and paddleboarders. This program was installed due to the ever-increasing traffic on the lake and has been very successful. The buoys were removed after Labor Day weekend and will be re-installed before Memorial Day weekend. Victoria has had a simpler buoy situation in place for a number of years, which is also very successful.

The indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract has a ceiling value of $9.9 million to provide second-generation Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders, associate peripherals, and spare parts for nearly 1,774 boats and 282 cutters in the Coast Guard’s active fleet. The government anticipates the purchase of vessel class-specific kits and spare parts to equip all USCG vessels with AIS-2 over the next five years.
MINIBOAT PROGRAM
STUDENTS ON OPPOSITE sides
of the Pacific Ocean are involved in a program that’s meant to enhance their knowledge of wind, weather, currents and the ocean. The Miniboat Program was developed by the Columbia River Maritime Museum in partnership with Educational Passages and the Consular Office of Japan in Portland. Students in the Pacific Northwest build two unmanned sailboats equipped with GPS transmitters, one to launch from the coast of North America and the other to send to their partner class in Japan for launching. While the boats are at sea, the students will track their movements. Using real-time data on ocean currents and weather, students will share their predictions about where the boats will go next with their friends on the other side of the world. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WINTERIZING IN CALIFORNIA Local boat people weigh in with pro tips for smooth sailing into winter. BY STEPHANIE SHIBATA
WINTER IN CALIFORNIA ISN’T ALL that different from spring or autumn, but it is the time of year that boat owners tend to use their vessel less frequently, and potentially care for it less frequently. And while a full-scale winterization isn’t usually required in the Golden State, owners can take measures that ensure their boat is healthy and happy during long periods of inactivity. To help boaters avoid any wintertime accidents or incidents, we asked a few California marina and harbor personnel about their tips for boat owners who keep their vessel in the water year round.
While winterizing one’s boat fully may not be necessary in most of California, preparing one’s boat for winter, especially if it’s going to be kept in the water, is absolutely necessary.
“The biggest mistake many of our boaters make during the winter is to forget about the boat,” said Alicia Kunz, marina manager at Essex Marina City Club. “It is often the best time to come down to the marina: peaceful with absolutely stunning sunsets. It really is my favorite time of the year in Marina del Rey, and also a great time to find a secluded mooring at Catalina Island.” Dock lines that are of proper length and diameter are very important during the winter months, according to Henry Rivas, the executive director of California Yacht Marinas. Boat owners definitely need to ensure they have the proper number of lines and that they are in serviceable condition. Rivas added that it is important to inspect the cleats, both on the vessel and the docks, because the forces created by a storm can pull out a loose cleat. All required docklines should be present and in use, and boat owners need to learn how to properly secure lines to a cleat. There is more than one proper way to secure SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2019
+ Sea CARegionals 2.indd 1
CA-1
11/28/18 7:17 AM
Lines that are in good condition and properly secured are vital to a boat’s winter prep. Owners should check hatches for leaks, in anticipation of winter storms.
Flotation Fixation said Kunz. “They should check to make sure their cockpits are draining, bilge pumps are operating, lines are in good condition and halyards are secured. Plus, they should inspect for any new leaks.” To combat odors and moisture during the wetter months, Marshall said boat owners should invest in a dehumidifier and use it regularly.
a line, so it’s smart to learn of the advantages and disadvantages to the different cleat hitches, locking vs. unlocking cleat hitch, for example. It’s a good idea to secure all the hatches, portholes, etc., and give them all a thorough washdown. Shoot water at all the seams of the hatches. “After,” Rivas said, “go inside the vessel and see if any of the water leaked inside. If so, address leaks as necessary.” One thing that seems obvious but is often overlooked is to make sure the boat’s bilge pumps work, according to Latisha Marshall, the harbormaster at Santa Cruz Harbor. Have a secondary dewatering system aboard, Rivas recommended, such as a foot pump, in case a bilge pump fails. And no matter the bilge pump situation, Marshall wanted owners to remember that smaller vessels may have to be dewatered after heavy rains. “I always remind my boaters to come down right before, during, and/or after a big storm,” CA-2
Sounding like a parent about to turn his child over to a babysitter, Rivas recommends boaters always have easy access to emergency phone numbers: harbor patrol, U.S. Coast Guard, police, fire, the marina office and some of their fellow boaters. “Share your number with fellow boaters and keep the marina you are berthed at up to date with your current contact information as well as a reliable emergency contact if you can’t be reached,” Rivas said. “By doing these two things you put yourself and the professional emergency responders in a better position to be able to respond to an emergency and/or be notified of an emergency.” Sailboat owners have additional responsibilities, including properly securing all the sails. A sail that unfurls during high winds will ruin the sail, make a lot of noise and disturb neighbors; plus, they can be dangerous to safely correct under storm conditions. Secure all halyards/ lines as well. Rivas wants everyone to remember it is very inconsiderate to neighbors to have them clanging up against a mast during strong winds. Last, secure all loose items on deck, Marshall said, so it doesn’t get blown around or fall inside as vessel is moved by the storm. “If you are new to boating and don’t know what to do, then ask,” Rivas said. “There is no shame in asking for professional guidance. It is much cheaper and less stressful to prepare for an emergency than to react to one.”
The folks at BoatUS recommend boat owners keep their onboard inflatable life jackets up to the task at all times. To ensure your inflatable life jackets are ready for a spur-ofthe-moment winter cruise, take these steps: • Inspect jacket for rips, tears, holes, broken buckles, etc. • Orally inflate the life jacket to capacity. • Inspect the CO2 trigger and cartridge to ensure it hasn’t been discharged; inspect the inflator for corrosion and serviceability. If you have an automatic unit, inspect/replace the dissolving “pill,” if it’s equipped with one. • Leave the jacket inflated for 24 hours to ensure it holds air. You can also immerse the jacket to check for leaks in the jacket or the manual inflation tube. • If everything looks good, repack the jacket for use on the water.
Natural Wonders Wintertime means prime migrating time for whales as they travel from Alaska to Mexico for birthing and mating. Keep an eye out and make sure to keep a safe distance if you are boating and encounter a whale. Elephant seals are also mating in California during January and February, which are the best months to see them at Ano Nuevo State Park near Santa Cruz and Piedras Blancas Lighthouse in San Luis Obispo. Check out the Regional Calendar in this section for more winter activity ideas for boaters.

For four days, the Los Angeles Boat Show is the place to find the latest and greatest boats, boards, accessories and more. THIRD TIME’S A CHARM. AT least that’s how the old saw goes. And while this is the 63rd time the Los Angeles Boat Show will bring the boating public together with the boating industry, it’s the third year under Duncan McIntosh Co. ownership, so we’ll see if this year is charmed. The first two years went well, even given the challenge of moving to a new location at the Pomona Fairplex and record rainfall in 2017, so attendees should expect the same from Jan. 10 to 13. Spread across four buildings on the Fairplex grounds, the boat show will feature deckboats, bowriders, fishing boats, cuddy cabin boats, center consoles, cruisers, pontoons, PWCs, wakeboats and every variation of those types. It’s a chance to compare and contrast similar models, get the best price, talk to knowledgeable dealers and see what’s going on under the waterline, since the boats will be propped up for observation.
Go Fast! Even folks shopping for a pontoon with a 50 hp outboard still like to look at boats that come closer to flying than parting the waves, and there’s place to see just those boats. Building #5 will house the High Performance Hall (1) and feature mono- and multihull boats that can move at impressive speeds. Manufacturers such as Shockwave and

Thousands of square feet of floor space will be packed with boats, gear, accessories and more — something for the whole family — at the LA Boat Show.
Eliminator will feature models that are sure to impress the young and the old.
The Whole Fam While a bevy of boats should be enough to hold everyone’s attention, we all know the youngsters — and maybe an adult or two — will begin to lose interest. Fortunately, the younger set can get their face painted, pick up a balloon or two, or maybe even find a simulator (2) that feels like a video game but can provide a little real-world practice. When hunger strikes, food stands are there to sate the famished family, and two restaurants are onsite, Finish Line Sports Grill and McKinley’s Grille, which uses farm-fresh ingredients from its own one-acre farm. With any luck, a live band will be performing when it’s break time. The really adventurous can take a spin around the standup paddleboard pool aboard a SUP. It’s a try-before-you-buy experience that could lead to viral video gold, not that we’d wish that on anyone…

Big & Small Since this show is on land and mostly indoors, attendees won’t find that 70-foot ocean trawler they’ve been looking for — other Duncan McIntosh Co. shows are in the water and have such vessels — but they will find a wide variety of other vessels. Exhibitors will have 35-foot family coastal cruisers (3) and sportfishers, 22-foot watersports boats and, of course, PWCs (4) that can accommodate one, two or three people. The variety of sizes and styles will keep people guessing as to whether they’ve seen it all yet.
Get Accessorized People with boats need things to put in those boats and to use behind those boats, so the accessory dealers and manufacturers are out in force at the show. Life jackets, boards (5), skis, ropes, handles, towable tubes, fishing gear and more are on display, hoping to find a home aboard the right boat. And many of the exhibitors will have equipment available to purchase, should the impulse so move you. SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2019 CA-5

JANUARY’S QUESTION
How does a good broker make sure buyers get the boat they really need as opposed to one they think they want, so they don’t come to the realization in a year that they bought the wrong boat?
I think in most cases buyers come in with an expectation. They say, “We want this. We’ve seen pictures online.” And that’s great, because they’ve done their research. But nothing — no pictures, no online videos — takes the place of setting foot on the boat. Usually they’re looking at the cheapest one or a smaller size boat because of price and the slip they can get, and you take them to that boat and they usually bump themselves. In most cases, if they’re starting at a certain size, they’re going to end up at a larger and more expensive boat, because they’re going to go and look at a boat they had found online, and when they get to it, it’s not going to
be what they thought. Or you go and look at the one with the lowest price and there are all kinds of maintenance problems. In those cases, the difference between a good broker and a bad broker, is the bad broker, if the client is ignorant, will just keep them going. Me, I’ve gone to the extreme and told people — I’m sure a lot of brokers are like this — “We’re not buying this boat.” In some cases I’ve had to tell people, “Hey, look, I don’t know much about anything in life, but this is what I know. I know boats, and I’m telling you, this is what we need to do.” That’s usually when everything they’re telling me directs me to one model but they’re on something
Ben Masonheimer
else, and you just have to have a heartto-heart conversation with them and say, “I’ll help you do whatever you’d like to do, but I really feel you should be going this direction.” And maybe it’s a boat they don’t even know exists because they’re been so focused on one boat. A good broker is more of a buying companion and a source of education, a resource, rather than someone trying to sell you something. He should be on your side looking out solely for your interests. It should be more of an experience where every time something is found wrong he’s not trying to convince you it can be fixed cheaply. He should say, “Let’s investigate and find out and see what we can do there,” and really be a resource and a guide to help you. A lot of my job is really slowing people down instead of speeding them up, and making them really think.

When you create a whole category, you’re allowed to reinvent it. At Bertram, we’ve got plenty of history. We took sportfishing to uncharted waters, introduced the first production deep-vee hull, and created the large offshore “battlewagon” category. But the story of Bertram is one about never looking back. Which is why we’re introducing the Bertram 61, a new leader in its class. Though to be fair to the rest of the class, it’s really in a category of its own. The new 61 is unmistakably Bertram, and undeniably original. And those sharp, clean lines are just the beginning. Get ready to experience performance, durability and comfort like nothing else on the water. In true Bertram fashion, we took every detail, and cranked it up to 11. That means rugged infused vinylester construction, a modern deep-vee hull, 1925MHP CAT diesel engines, a panoramic salon windshield, Octoplex digital switching, a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, the finest appliances and components, and all of it comes standard. The Bertram 61 is like nothing that’s come before it. It’s hard to admit, but not even another Bertram comes close. We’re proud of our past, but when you’re a true original, you can’t be afraid to write a completely new chapter.
