MOM’S MONTH MOM. SHE’S THE LIFELONG female presence

in most people’s life. She’s who professional athletes say hi to when they’re on camera. She’s who we wish could care for us when we get sick, even as adults. She’s overprotective. She’s irrationally proud at times. She has an unnatural fear of ditches: “I was worried

Remember, May 12 is the date this year, so be sure to acknowledge mom. you were lying injured in a ditch. Why didn’t you call?” (And that was before cellphones. Call with what? My pinkie and thumb? Only readers older than a certain age will understand that reference.) Anyway… Moms are also encouragers. Trying to waterski for the first time, I had a terrible experience. I. Could. Not. Stay. Up. My willingness to try was admirable. My ability to ski was abominable. Mom was the encouraging one — “You almost had it that time!” — even though I suspect she was thinking, His father and I are both athletes and he can’t figure out waterskiing? Ah, good times. I was 36. Kidding. It’s appropriate our cruising feature this month is a family story. Mom, dad and daughter spent last summer cruising the Inside Passage and Southeast Alaska aboard their Nordhavn 40 MV Cassidy, a boat they 4

have since sold to make way for a Nordhavn 56 motorsailer. Cassidy, the trawler’s 8-yearold namesake, has a solid foundation for a lifetime of boating memories thanks to mom. (Yes, dad, too, but his day is next month, so step aside, pops). Turn to page 36 to read portions of their blog from a summer afloat, and then visit mvcassidy.com to read the passages we couldn’t fit on our pages. Speaking of fun summer boating activities, we have a list of West Coast rendezvous events and rallies in our roundup feature that begins on page 44. Thirty-some events are included, from brand-specific gatherings to multi-brand dealer shindigs to power and sail rallies. More than simply social gatherings, most rendezvous offer educational seminars, fun contests and access to experts from the dealer and even the builder. There should be something for everyone. Somewhat coincidentally, both of our sea trials in this issue feature boats from builders that are doing something different. The CLB 72 on page 28 is part of a new semi-custom line from multigenerational builder Cheoy Lee, and the Tactical T-40 on page 32 is a yacht-quality aluminum 40-footer from Richmond, B.C.-based Tactical Custom Boats, part of the Platinum Marine family. Remember, May 12 is the date this year, so be sure to acknowledge mom. Don’t give her any ditch-related panic on her day.

OVERLOAD

The builder’s new flagship is feature-packed, cruiseand fish-ready, and has horsepower aplenty.

The 530 LXF is a 53-footer outfitted for battle, cruising and entertaining.

BIG CENTER CONSOLE BOATS are definitely a thing. Builders have taken them past 40 feet, past 50 feet and in one case, past 65 feet. Center console yacht is more apt as a descriptor in some cases. The latest builder to enter the latter category is Scout Boats with its 530 LXF, a 53-footer outfitted for battle, cruising and entertaining. As nice as the boat looks — it is long, sleek, and bristling with outriggers and rods — most folks won’t get to the boat’s looks and amenities until after they’ve processed what’s at the rear of the boat. There is a gaggle of outboards. At the Miami Boat Show, Scout exhibited one 530 LXF with six Mercury Verado 400s and another with five Yamaha XTO 425s. Buyers can also opt for four of either brand. Expect 68 mph with the sextet of Mercs. Past the outboards and the transom is a sizable cockpit that gets even bigger at anchor thanks to electronically actuated platforms that fold out of the hull sides to widen the boat to 17 feet. Featured in the cockpit are twin livewells and a foldout seat in the transom, an island console with a sink, a cooler, a grill, a drawer refrigerator, storage and two stools that swing out, and a rack of articulating rod holders overhead. Forward of the console is a bench seat and twin aft-facing seats Bow seating includes a three-person sun lounge and a U-shaped settee with twin tables that lower and turn the area into another multiperson lounge. Behind glass that wraps around three sides is a helm that features a captain’s chair to starboard, a twin companion seat to port, a 24-inch Garmin MFD in both halves of the split dash — the entrance to the belowdecks master cabin, galley, dining area and head separates the halves — two 12-inch MFDs in the overhead helm and all the controls a captain needs. The LXF stands for luxury sportfish, and the 530 LXF delivers.

Boating Season Kickoff

Memorial Day this year will be observed on May 27. The federal holiday commemorates the men and women who died serving their country. It’s also the unofficial opening of boating season in many parts of the country, which means the waterways will be extremely busy. The National Safe Boating Council sponsors the Safe Boating Campaign every year to remind boaters to stay safe on the water. Part of that campaign is Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day, which is May 17 this year. NSBC also has a list of Boating Safety Tips that we’re sharing here.

Dress properly. Always file a float plan. Find out more at floatplancentral.org. 1 0 . Always follow navigation rules. 1 1 . Don’t drink while you boat. 1 2 . Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning. 1 3 . Keep in touch. Communication devices can be the most important piece of emergency equipment on board a vessel, especially in case of emergency. 8. 9.

WHAT WAS ONLY A concept last year is now a reality in full form, a first-of-its-kind “livable yacht”

that is eco-friendly and hurricane resistant. Model #1 of Arkup debuted at the 2019 Miami Boat Show. Highly customizable, emissions-free, solar-powered and fronted by an expanse of glass, Arkup starts at about $3 million. It does have twin 136 hp electric thrusters and can travel as fast as 7 knots, and four 40-foot-long hydraulic legs can “anchor” the yacht to the bottom and/or lift it out of the water.

MEXICO REPORT

By CAPT. PAT RAINS

PAST MEETS PRESENT

Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are legendary Gold Coast destinations for cruising and fishing. WHILE 16TH-CENTURY PIRATES HID in Zihuatanejo Bay waiting to ambush Spain’s passing Manila galleons, they fell in love with the bay’s legendary identity: Cihuateotl, Place of the Goddess Women, daughters of the unconquered Tarascan emperor Calzontzin. Drake, Anson, Cavendish and other pirates spread tales of the goddess women, attracting European colonists who built haciendas and coconut plantations here. After World War II, several boatloads of adventurers dropped anchor in this remote jungle enclave, seeking Mexico’s fabled beauties. It’s no surprise the population swelled and sits at 70,000 today. This spring, so many recreational boaters arrived here that the 18th annual Zihua SailFest raised more than $100,000 for the region’s needy schoolchildren. This summer Zihuatanejo is building a big new cruise-ship pier to attract even more tourists to this twin destination now marketed as Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Locals call it “Zehua” (zee-waa).

LAY OF THE LAND

Mexico’s Gold Coast is a treasure trove of enticing destinations. About 200 nautical miles down the coast from Barra Navidad is a 10-mile long tropical cruising ground. Isla Ixtapa day park and prominent Punta Ixtapa and its pretty Barefoot Isle are visible from the northwest. They shield the lighted jetty entrance to Marina Ixtapa and its two sheltered basins. A mile of blazingly white beach is backed by glassy 15-story hotels, then another couple of miles of cliffs and coves. Three jungle-clad headlands separate to reveal the small enclosed bay of Zihuatanejo, ringed by beaches and a picturesque traditional fishing town. Sprinkled among all this splendor are numerous lesser islands, breaking reefs and tranquil fishing holes. And the goddess women.

WHAT’S FOR BOATERS?

Despite the contrasting personalities of Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo, only six miles apart, both locales offer much to attract and satisfy hundreds of nautical visitors. For boaters, November through June is high season, not summer storm season. Marina Ixtapa is one of the largest boating facilities in Mexico and Central America. Recently expanded and renovated, it provides 621 full-service slips to 160 feet LOA, located in two adjacent interior yacht basins. This is a very popular region for tropical sportfishing and billfish tournaments. In the center of the larger East Basin, a 90-foot-long Pemex fuel dock is busy daily from 6 a.m. to dusk. At the north end of the narrow West Basin is a small boatyard with a concrete floor but limited dry storage room. However, it has a 100-ton sling lift, which is important to keep in mind for an emergency; it’s the only haulout between Puerto Vallarta (330 miles up the coast) and Acapulco (120 miles down the coast). Along the West Basin’s southeast side is the marina office, a mini-mart, a dive shop, a travel agency, car rentals, boutique

Keep an eye open for the goddess women, whose form is sculpted everywhere, including this tree (left) at Playa Las Gatas. Zihuatanejo Bay is an idyllic anchorage.

stores, several restaurants, a floating dinghy dock and the landmark lighthouse tower. It is similar in design to Marina Vallarta in Puerto Vallarta, which was built at about the same time. Taxis and golf carts with drivers usually line up below the lighthouse. A few crocodiles live in the marina and in the water channels that landscape the adjacent 18-hole golf course. It’s no joke, so use caution to keep pets safe. Fancy dining, dancing and live-music nightclubs that boogie until sunrise are located a short walk away, in the hotel zone that begins 500 feet past the lighthouse tower. Zihuatanejo Bay, less than 1 square mile, is fairly small for such an important cruising destination this far south on the Gold Coast. But its narrow dogleg approach between tall headlands helps shield the bay’s two main anchoring areas from southwest swell, which can occur even during the winter cruising months. Head northeast to enter Zihuatanejo Bay. Straight ahead is Playa La Ropa, the larger, quieter anchorage area (10 to 33 feet of water over sand). Its half-mile beach fronts a dozen cantinas that welcome yatistas. Or, upon entering the bay, turn left instead and pass Punta Morro to explore the bay’s smaller and more tightly packed north end. Hard to port is the 300-foot-long

navy seawall, often borrowed temporarily by locals when the warship is not in port. Next is a busy T-shaped excursion-boat dock. Note that this dock occasionally also sells small quantities of diesel if there is extra in the barrels. Marina Ixtapa is the more reliable source of marine fuel.

Local handicrafts abound in the shops in Zihuatanejo (top) and Ixtapa (bottom), where shopping and restaurants are also plentiful.

Feisty sailfish that weigh up to 175 pounds are abundant year round within five to 15 miles of shore, thanks to two submarine canyons that pump cold-water nutrients up from 1,000 fathoms. Yet only during spring, particularly March, do ample black and blue marlin migrate through here at the same time. According to a U.S. sportfishing magazine that studied this region, these marlin catches average 275 to 400 pounds, and some spectacular specimens boated have reached the 1,000-pound mark. Offshore waters yield yellowfin tuna to 300 pounds, also during spring. Bronze statues of the legendary goddess women may be found submerged in several snorkeling spots inside and just outside Zihuatanejo Bay, thanks to civic leaders. Goddesses are a popular artistic theme for local sculptors, painters and jewelers. Fine silver jewelry is a big deal here, thanks nearby Taxco’s silver mines and jewelry studios.

Dozens of pangas moor around the town’s big Municipal Pier, which is presently being enlarged for cruise-ship passenger craft. The pier expansion is slated for completion this summer. The port captain’s office (VHF Channel 16) and navy (VHF Channel 22) office are at the head of this pier. West of the pier a low pedestrian bridge spans a narrow channel into a small-boat lagoon, which is fun to explore by dinghy. Playa Principal, immediately east of the pier, is downtown’s handiest anchorage (10 to 30 feet deep over sand). Dinghy operators should aim for the beach near the landmark Meeting Tree. Behind the tree is a pleasant city park with shaded benches and the best walking access to Paseo de los Pescadores. Downtown is a mix of eateries, mini-marts and craft shops. Anchorage is possible also off Playa La Madera (20 to 28 feet deep over dark sand and mud) just east of Playa Principal, but caution is mandatory due to reefs at both ends that emerge at low tide. A quarter mile of rocky shoreline at the base of Cerro La Madera divides this marginal beach from the north end of the commodious Playa La Ropa.

EXHAUST SYSTEMS NEED REGULAR INSPECTIONS Know what components to check, and how often, to avoid a nasty surprise. BY CAPT. FRANK LANIER THE WET EXHAUST SYSTEMS found aboard recreational vessels use water to cool exhaust

gases prior to discharging them overboard. The water also serves as a muffler of sorts to quiet engine noise. Water-cooled exhaust systems inject cooling water into the exhaust via an exhaust riser or mixing elbow, where the exhaust then pushes the water out of the exhaust outlet.

Exhaust cooling water is typically provided by the engine’s raw-water pump, although a second pump may also be used (depending on the system). Most installations also include a muffler between the riser and the discharge outlet, there to reduce engine noise and — in the case of sailboats underway with the engine off — provide a place for water that enters the exhaust outlet a place to collect.

MAINTENANCE TIPS

A great familiarization and maintenance strategy is to conduct an inspection of your exhaust system at regular intervals, as part of a fall layup or spring commissioning routine, for example. All materials used in your exhaust system should ideally be labeled as to their suitability. Hoses, for

ASK THE EXPERTS example, should be labeled “marine wet exhaust” and be able to withstand heat, water weight, pressure, oil and acids. Anything other than short hose runs (i.e., four times the inside diameter of the hose) should feature wire-reinforced hose. Additionally, all hose connections should be made to a ridged component: pipe, muffler, exhaust outlet. Hose-to-hose joints are a definite no-no. Vessels with a transom exit exhaust should also have an exhaust valve, which is simply a rubber flapper valve that attaches to the outside of the exhaust and creates a one-way check valve to help prevent water from entering the exhaust (and possibly the engine). During an exhaust system inspection, check hoses for leaks, kinks, chafing, bulging (at hose clamps) and other signs of deterioration. Verify that each hose is double clamped where possible — where there is sufficient hose barb to allow it — and that hose clamps are tight and free of

 

Check the exhaust system with the engine off and while in operation. corrosion. Hose clamps should be installed no closer than one-quarter of an inch to the end of the hose and must fully engage the barb or fitting; otherwise, damage to the hose can occur. Heat-resistant lagging (insulation) that covers “hot” sections of the exhaust should be removed periodically to allow for a full inspection of the components beneath. Keep a lookout for leaks at other system components as well, paying special attention to engine manifold and exhaust elbow joints (prime places for leaks and corrosion). Engine manifolds and exhaust risers should be periodically removed, pressure tested and inspected for internal corrosion

and clogging, any of which can result in catastrophic engine failure. This should be considered standard maintenance, particularly with systems that operate in salt water. How often depends on vessel location (fresh or salt water) and use; however, at a minimum they should be removed and inspected every four to five years (more frequently depending on age). As labor is typically the biggest cost associated with doing this, most boat owners will forego testing and simply replace old manifolds and risers once they are pulled, regardless of condition, particularly if the vessel is used in salt water. Finally, check the exhaust system with the engine off and while in operation, as some leaks will only occur with the engine running. Aside from maintenance, finding and correcting exhaust leaks are also important from a safety standpoint, as they can introduce carbon monoxide (CO) into a vessel’s interior.

in the U.S. boating market since 2016, Galeon Yachts has been building boats for more than 35 years and has quickly gained traction in the U.S. thanks to a partnership with MarineMax. Its newest model, introduced at the Miami International Boat Show in February, is the 425 HTS, an express yacht that gives owners the option to run like an open boat when it’s nice outside or an enclosed one on inclement days. Sleek lines and a knife-like hull window that runs from the bow to the forward part of the cockpit, about

Amidships is an owner’s suite that stretches across the near-13-foot beam and includes an en suite head, a built-in bureau, a hanging locker, good-sized hull windows and more. A second stateroom is in the bow, and a galley and a dinette are between the staterooms. There is a second head. Several engine options exist, both from MerCruiser and Volvo Penta, though the

Volvo Penta D6 IPS500 option — 740 hp total — is likely to be the most popular. No matter the engine package chosen, the captain will command the Galeon 425 HTS from a helm that has room for twin big-screen MFDs or a single and multiple instrument displays. In addition, analog engine gauges flank the central dash, and the throttles and IPS joystick (if so equipped) occupy a helm extension arm to the operator’s right.

Expansive windows and a sunroof make the 425 HTS’s interior light and airy during the day, while LEDs and recessed ceiling lighting deliver an elegant ambiance at night.

CLB 72

A fifth-generation builder introduces a reinvigorated, reimagined, semicustom brand. Photos by JIM RAYCROFT

HOW DOES A BUILDER herald the news it has

established a new luxury division among its yacht models? Why, by rebranding the new business to stand out in the world and by showing off its yacht-building prowess with a semicustom product. I’m referring to Cheoy Lee and its new brand CL Yachts, currently with two models, including the CLB 72. To clarify, the “B” in CLB denotes the line of Cheoy Lee yachts it is modeled after: the Bravo series of family-oriented cruising yachts. Conversely the “A” line, as in CLA 76, is modeled on the high-performance Alpha series of Cheoy Lee yachts. The newness of the brand is evidenced by a refreshed interior and timeless lines. Sure, there’s evidence of the Cheoy Lee pedigree — the family has been in the ship- and

yacht-building business for five generations — but this approach seems softer, a simple approach to design with luxury and innovation to support the comfort of yachting.

WELCOME ABOARD

Access to the CLB 72 is from the swim platform to the aft deck via twin staircases, or at the sidedeck boarding gates. Large enough to hold a water toy in chocks, the hydraulic swim platform doubles as a beach, delivering easy access to the water for activities. Six steps up is the aft deck. It is high enough to prevent any following seas from

coming on deck and to create space for the lower level. Here, the aft lounge includes a well-padded bench seat across the transom and a twin-post table for alfresco dining. Add a few folding chairs around the table and there’s dining room for a crowd. Our test yacht had rich teak decking that added to the overall panache. The main deck is open and spacious. Visibility is clear from the aft deck all the way forward to the split windshield and lower helm. No interior bulkhead walls are needed, since the CLB 72 upper deck is supported by the surrounding frame, which leaves an open canvas for the interior design team, Interiors by Carmen, to go crazy, but in a simple form. Gray wood flooring and white oak woodwork create a casual feel that encourages the crew to kick off their shoes. I noticed one thing walking in from the aft deck. No galley. At least in the aft area. Many builders are placing the galley aft to centralize service when the aft doors are open, but CL placed the galley forward to port, a layout that blends the salon and aft deck into one large social area. The arrangement makes sense for an owner/ operator and keeps the salon an area unto itself.

COME IN

Stainless steel–framed glass doors provide excellent visibility and add to the open feel of the salon. Casual seating includes a portside L-shaped upholstered settee with a corner table that opens at the top for storage, a chair and a glass coffee table. This layout creates an intimate gathering place and affords an excellent view of the 48-inch popup TV in the starboard entertainment cabinet. Stylish wall sconces, a valance and floor lighting add to the intimacy. Recessed ceiling lights are unobtrusive yet fill the area at night. Forward to port is the combined galley and dinette. CL didn’t skimp here. A Bosch

At 30 feet long, the flybridge, complete with helm, twin captain’s chairs, settee, grill and wet bar, will be the CLB 72’s most popular gathering spot.

A low-profile L-shaped design helps divide the galley from the Price (as tested) salon while maintaining the open access to guests in the salon. A galley $3.9 million island houses the dishwasher and storage and is a perfect addition for increased counterspace. Under the forward windshield is an L-shaped dinette settee with a glass dining table. It’s a perfect spot to take in the view during morning coffee and an informal social area for impromptu guests. TAKE THE CONTROLS

Operating the CLB 72 from the lower station is a breeze. CL designed the helm like a pod, saving space for living features but creating a functional station. By placing some controls in the Stidd chair’s armrests — the Volvo Penta joystick to the right and the Garmin multifunction display control to the left — CL was able to manage the space needs on the helm console. There are twin Garmin MFDs that manage the Volvo Glass Cockpit system, throttle controls, a CZone control pad, a Seakeeper controller and everything else needed for safe operation. A starboard pantograph door provides easy access for the operator to grab

the seat bottoms and added rubber gaskets to stop any water from getting into the storage area. And the drain channels have drain lines to ship the water away. Heavy duty lockdown latches are used instead of cheaper types. The details are important, and CL understands that, as discriminating owners are its target audience.

RUN IT UP lines or assist in provisioning. By virtue of its design, I expect the CLB 72 will be operated from the flybridge helm most of the time. At almost 30 feet in length and with an integral hardtop, the flybridge deck will be a central gathering area. Twin Stidd helm seats give the operator and companion a perch from which to scan the horizon. It also has a full complement of electronics. Fiberglass molded seat bases topped with thick cushions and backrests create a comfortable L-shaped settee. Twin painted fiberglass tables are within easy reach of each seat and come with cupholders to prevent spills. A wet bar with a refrigerator/ ice-maker is to port. Ample room on the deck allows for chaise lounge seats or other storage.

CHECK THE DETAILS

One example of the level of quality are the storage hatches under the seats. CL very easily could have used flat pieces of fiberglass to cover the openings. Instead, it created tongue-and-channel openings in

Elegance follows form once again in the lower accommodation areas. Accessed via a staircase next to the lower station, belowdecks has a four-stateroom layout, plus crew quarters. Embedded into several of the horizontal wood strakes are narrow lights that illuminate the staircase — a different approach than using only ceiling lights. The full-beam master is amidships. Its king berth is sideways, its cushioned headboard to port, under the window. The arrangement essentially opens up half the room, which CL fills with a sofa lounge and table, a dresser and a vanity station. Tinted hull-side windows, nightstands, a cedarlined walk-in closet with racks and drawers, a 40-inch popup TV and ample storage fit out the room. An en suite head features a Tecma electric toilet, a walk-in shower stall with a teak-capped seat, trough-style his/ hers sinks and stone countertops. Not to be outdone, twin guest staterooms

Thanks to collaboration between CL and the exterior design team from Apollonio Naval Architecture, the hull performance is nothing short of exhilarating. Pushing 94,000 pounds of resin-infused composite materials through the water is no easy task, and neither is reaching a top speed of more than 31 knots, but CL got it done. As I found out during our test on hull #2, no matter the speed the 72 responds with surefootedness and agility, more like a sportboat that a motoryacht. A few steps up is the forward VIP guest stateroom, which features a center-line queen berth, hull windows, an overhead hatch, a cedar-lined closet, storage and a TV. An en suite head is private. The crew cabin, with space for two people, is aft of the owner’s closet and head, in front of the engine room. SEA TRIAL

TACTICAL T-40 EXPRESS A hardcore exterior and twin outboards belie an interior that taps into the builder’s megayacht roots. Photos by NEIL RABINOWITZ

SPECS WHEN IT COMES TO sea trials, the wind and sea conditions are too often mild, which makes it impossible to judge a yacht’s ability to handle rough weather. In those cases, I look for a large ferry wake to jump, because big car ferries throw up an impressive train. In almost all such cases, the operator will slow down before reaching the wake. Not this time. We approached the steep B.C. Ferries vessel wake at 37 knots, and I braced for impact. Remarkably, we charged right through and didn’t miss a beat. None of the typical slamming and pounding, just a comfortable rise and fall while the hull threw out a wall of spray. I couldn’t recall ever doing this — even at half the speed — without jarring and slamming.

I was aboard the refreshingly different Tactical 40 Express. At first glance this aluminum yacht looks more like a military, police, or search-and-rescue vessel, given its battleship gray hull, flat, forwardraked windshield and floatation collar, but that’s only half of it. Aboard, the stylish interior, luxurious furnishings and exquisite fit and finish clearly identify this as a very serious yacht. The Tactical 40 is the brainchild of Tim Charles, entrepreneur and principal (with partner Dave Marsden) of Richmond, B.C.-based Platinum Marine Group. His group of seven companies offers a wide range of services, from repair and refit to megayacht

construction — the only company to currently build megayachts in Canada.

OUTBOARD POWER

The T-40 is powered by twin 627 hp Seven Marine outboards, which are the most powerful outboards in the world. These supercharged and intercooled behemoths use GM’s Gen IV, 6.2L small-block V-8 engine, the same one used in Corvettes and CTS-V Cadillacs. Seven Marine was recently purchased by Volvo Penta, a move that gave the company a boost thanks to Volvo’s deeper pockets. It also allowed Seven Marine’s outboards to be connected to Volvo’s counter-rotating duo-prop gearcases, and this was the configuration chosen for the T-40. The huge four-blade props — 19-inch diameter forward and 17 and a half inches aft — and the extreme torque of the outboards require a computer to govern acceleration, to avoid loading up the drives too quickly. These outboards are surprisingly fuel efficient, burning just less than a gallon per mile at a fast cruise of 33.5 knots, a testament to Gregory C. Marshall’s slippery hull design. While speed wasn’t a design priority — these outboards can push the T-40 to 40 knots — ride quality, especially in rough weather, was one of the key design objectives.

Inside, the most impressive feature is the helm, which is where “outside tactical” meets “inside tactical.” As the T-40’s centerpiece, the helm station spans the cabin and includes four MFDs and four hydraulic shock-mitigation seats. Aft, twin 627 hp engines deliver aggressive power.

OPERATOR OASIS

Inside, the most impressive feature is the helm, which is where “outside tactical” meets “inside tactical.” Four 24-inch Garmin glass-cockpit screens create a wall of screens, two to each side of the companionway. Here’s where I found a clever feature. Horizontal aluminum rails run underneath the screens and serve as wrist-rests that make it easier to use the touchscreens in rough water. The console is fronted by a row of four S3 Shockwave professional series hydraulic shock-mitigation seats (with harnesses), the same hightech seats used by the U.S. Navy Seals, the Canadian Coast Guard, and other elite military and search-and-rescue organizations around the world. The four touchscreens and four seats make it possible for everyone aboard to participate in “getting there.” Each person faces forward and can interact with the navigation and other ship’s systems and become part of the voyage instead of being just a passenger. Several other noteworthy features occupy the helm area. The T-40 doesn’t have a traditional steering wheel. It is equipped with a molded, high-end Super Sport race-car wheel whose integrated buttons can control a number of programmable functions wirelessly. An overhead powered skylight brings in light and ventilation. While the sole of most yachts is carpet or some form of wood, the helm area of the T-40 is finished with a closed-cell foam material called Ultradeck. It is durable, provides a superior grip and is soft underfoot. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  MAY 2019  33

+Sea Trial Tactical.indd 33

DOUBLE DUTY

At the aft end of the T-40, a teak-soled cockpit serves as both a serious fishing platform and a cozy entertaining space. Fixed and folding settees and a movable table provide plenty of room for lounging and alfresco dining. To accommodate fishing, the bench seat folds up and the table stows. Inset into the transom is an outdoor kitchen with an electric grill and a sink. Overhead, an electric sunshade provides good protection from rain and sun. Joysticks to either side of the cockpit make docking easy. The coach roof is finished in black carbon fiber–look vinyl wrap, which adds to the tactical appearance. It is topped with a black radar mast that includes a FLIR gyro-stabilized night vision camera.

MORE INTERIOR

The salon is entered via a heavy, hinged aluminum door to starboard. To port, a clever drop-down glass window by Diamond Sea Glaze was engineered to eliminate the typical mullion on its inboard edge. With the salon door open and the window lowered, the same-level cockpit and salon become seamless. Per the owner’s wishes, our test T-40 was designed as a couple’s yacht. A single stateroom occupies the bow, and it is opulent, with an island queen berth and plush carpeting. Since the boat has only one cabin, there is room for separate head and shower compartments, which are welcome cruising features. Both are considerably larger and more stylish than one would expect on a boat of this size. One striking feature is the black, carbon-fiber toilet and raised carbon-fiber sink (custom fabricated to match the toilet). The two items contrast beautifully with the rich Ferrari red countertop and gloss wood cabinetry. The shower room is broken into two distinct wood-trimmed areas, one for the shower and one for towel storage.

SYSTEMS

Redundancy is the keyword when it comes to onboard systems. The electronics were designed by Vancouver-based Pacific Yacht Systems and built around the NMEA 2000 backbone, which uses a single trunk line with T’s to all the separate components. All systems are integrated

The inflatable collar has shown to be an excellent spray knocker. It provides a bit of insurance should the T-40 bump up against another vessel, it looks cool and provides emergency floatation.

Aft of the helm, a galley and dinette fill out the main cabin. Belowdecks, the forward stateroom is fully appointed, and the head is split between two compartments: toilet and sink in one, shower in the other.

into a single CZone digital control and monitoring system that can be connected wirelessly to an iPad. However, as a safety feature, physical switches are also present, to ensure 100 percent redundancy. Cabin heating is via a diesel hydronic system that delivers ondemand hot water; cabin cooling is via reverse-cycle air. A Seakeeper 6 gyro stabilizer will keep things on an even keel at anchor, while fishing or at slow cruising speeds. A 6 kw Northern Lights generator provides auxiliary power and two 450-amp-hour 8D lithium batteries will provide more-than-ample power. A water-maker supplements the 100-gallon water tank.

ON THE WATER

We tested the Tactical 40 in the Canadian Gulf Islands. Cockpit joystick stations to either side made it a snap to ease away from the dock. The ZF joystick steering is somewhat different, because the outboards don’t articulate independently. Instead, the system works with the engines and the Side-Power proportional bow and stern thrusters. The system also has station-keeping modes and a hold-on-dock function. The seas were relatively quiet, so unfortunately we couldn’t really test the boat’s heavy weather capability, except for the ferry wakes. However, cruising at speed regardless of sea conditions was the primary performance criteria of the T-40. In those conditions, the inflatable collar has shown to be an excellent spray knocker. That collar also provides a bit of insurance should the T-40 bump up against D E TA I L S another vessel, and it looks Standard & Optional Equipment cool and provides emergency Consult with the builder, as each floatation. yacht is custom built. Noise is always a concern on aluminum yachts. To Builder & West Coast Dealer reduce this, the interior of Tactical Custom Boats, the hull was sprayed with Richmond, BC; (604) 325-6920; tacticalcustomboats.com foam, which also reduced or eliminated concerns over condensation. With the outboards mounted far aft, most of the noise we experienced was from wave slap. The all-hydraulic steering was surprisingly responsive, and we carved into sharp turns effortlessly with no slipping. On plane, our bow-up angle was only 3.4 degrees and visibility over the bow was very good. The T-40 has a very solid, comfortable feel at speed. The forward-raked windshield should prove excellent at reducing glare. Add in the large roof overhang, and visibility-reducing rain and spray should never be a problem. In addition to head-turning looks, the prototype T-40 incorporates many unique and well-thought-out features, and includes equipment and redundancy not normally seen on a yacht of this size. Its flawless fit and finish is certainly up to luxury yacht standards. Clearly every inch has been thought out and executed by highly skilled craftspeople. And of course, with a top speed of 40 knots, California couples can make it to Catalina in less than an hour.

KETCHIK AN TO MEYERS CHUCK

Finding Nature’s Playground We were musing about the juxtaposition between the isolated Foggy Bay anchorage we woke up in and the frenzied Tongass Narrows as we approached Ketchikan in the early afternoon. Almost as soon as we approached the narrows, seaplanes came into sight and we were dodging fishing boats and cruise ships. After several long, quiet days at anchor, I enjoyed taking in the busy scene. We spent most of our time in Ketchikan catching up on errands and completing projects. We docked at Bar Harbor, which is about one and a half miles north of the main downtown area. Everything Jen and Cassidy smile in Meyers we needed was located within three miles of the  Chuck, where the docks, full of boat on the main road, Tongass Road, which runs Slowboat Flotilla boats, provide through the town. We had our electric bikes to get easy access to all the town has us around, but a city bus runs conveniently up and to offer. down Tongass Road (free within a certain zone). Right after customs visited the boat and cleared us, I geared up in warm running clothes and went for a jog through cruise ship central (the downtown area). I was dodging tourists the entire time, but it was a great way to scan the town. Later we went back on bikes to visit the Tongass Trading Co. in search of fishing tackle and foul-weather gear. We found ourselves at Tongass Trading Co. several times over the next three days as the weather really tested the effectiveness of our gear!

.....

The weather settled a bit the next morning, so it was time for the Slowboat Flotilla to move on to the next stop: Kasaan. In the 1700s the Haida people migrated north, settled old Kasaan and later moved a few miles to Kasaan. We learned a ton more about the Haidas at this stop.

Laura, one of the Slowboat leads, invited us over to meet her friend Stormy, one of the lead carvers in town. Stormy led the effort to restore the longhouse once built by Chief Sonihat. Restore is a bit of an understatement. Laura later showed me pictures of the project and it looked as though Stormy had to start from the ground up. He described the process. Three men labored longer than four years, piece by piece, the traditional way without the aid of modern tools. The longhouse site is impressive by itself, and even more so when you understand all that went into it. Later we walked to Stormy’s house, just up the path. He has been working on carving a traditional canoe, only his third canoe, but it looks amazing. The process has three main steps: identifying the right tree, carving the tree and steaming to shape the tree. Stormy described the process of identifying the right tree. The tree must be straight, the right height, and show no signs of cracking where water could leak in and rot the tree. Once the right tree has been selected, its time for carving. He showed us a couple of small logs in various stages of carving to demonstrate the process. First, the ends are trimmed in a vee shape. Then, he saws across the length of the log, creating a smooth surface. And finally, he scoops out the insides to hollow out the canoe. He showed us some of the tools that are used in the process and let us try them.

Dodging Bergie Bits We left Meyers Chuck and headed for the glaciers. We made stops at Wrangell and Petersburg along the way. Both are quaint fishing towns, with all the necessary services for cruisers — fuel, groceries, restaurants — all conveniently located near the marinas. From Petersburg, we took a day trip to LeConte glacier. Sam and Ralph came with us on Cassidy so we could take turns exploring closer on the dinghy while someone stayed on board the big boat. The large chunks of ice that break of the glaciers — a process called calving — and float out in the narrow passages make it difficult, if not impossible, to bring the big boat close to the glacier, and anchoring is not an option due to

Seeing bergie bits and larger chunks up close in the dinghy was a thrill.

the depth. We weren’t able to get up to the glacier because of the dense flow of bergie bits, but we played around near some serious iceberg chucks. From Petersburg, we waved goodbye to civilization, as we would make our way to Juneau for the next week through some very remote locations. We stayed overnight at Pybus and Tracy Arm Cove on our way to Fords Terror. Entering Fords Terror takes some planning, because it can only be entered at high slack. The water rushes wildly through the narrow entrance outside of the slack tide, and the shoals on either side are exposed at low tide. The area was named after a naval crew who paddled into the narrows in the late 1800s, only to be stuck for six hours waiting out the tidal rapids. High slack on the night we stayed was at 8 p.m., so we spent the day playing around the icebergs at Endicott Arm. We were in awe as we passed through Fords Terror, stumbling over ourselves to snap pictures, take video, and simply stare at the backdrop that was unfolding before us. We followed the very narrow passage between two towering walls with several waterfalls along the way to our anchorage. We spent two nights at Fords Terror so we would have a full day to explore the passages. In the morning, the group took a dinghy tour of the area. We discovered a hidden waterfall, ran the dinghies through the rapids, and circled around a huge iceberg.

Entering Fords Terror takes some planning, because it can only be entered at high slack.

TENAKEE SPRINGS, AL ASK A

Independence Day in Alaska I don’t know if it was the perfect 75 - degree weather or the upcoming July 4 holiday or the wonderful welcome by Cassidy’s friend Ila and her family (who we met in Juneau a few weeks previous), but Tenakee is the type of town that I want to bottle up and take with me. I fantasized about staying for the entire summer. It is difficult to capture the charm of this little spot with words. We arrived on July 3, just in time to watch another boat take the last spot on the transient dock. After several unreturned calls to the harbormaster, we had all but given up when we heard “Bakery calling Cassidy, over” on the radio. I recognized the voice right away. Chris, Ila’s mom, tried calling the harbormaster on a landline for us and came down to the harbor to direct us into a spot. A local fisherman was out for a few days, so we were in. No sooner were the docklines tied than we were making our way up the dock with Chris to find Ila. The town is situated along one dirt path. Homes on the north side of the road are built up against the hillside and the homes along the south side overlook the inlet. Although the path continues on for miles, the main part of town is about a 1-mile stretch with the harbor and the library marking each end. The town center includes a surprisingly well-stocked general store, a post office and a bakery. Ila’s family runs the bakery and lives upstairs.

Tenakee is the type of town that I want to bottle up and take with me.

.....

40

Tenakee Springs isn’t big, maybe a mile from end to end, but its houses and signs are interesting and fun. Cassidy (foreground) and her friend Ila gather salmon berries in their secret spot.

The next day was July 4. Tenakee really knows how to celebrate Independence Day! The day starts with a parade at 11:30. The girls were dressed as cows, towed in a cart by Chris and Susan. A sign on the side of the cart read “Cows Caught for Beef … Oh No!” Darius, Ila’s dad, followed in a festively decorated bicycle. The parade was led by a fire truck that was followed by families on decorated ATVs or kids on bikes. We all wandered over to the potluck after the parade. Potluck is an understatement. This was a feast: hamburgers, hotdogs, crab, halibut, salmon, potato salads and more treats than one could imagine. Someone even makes ice cream for the town every July 4: salmon berry ice cream made with berries that are picked locally. Delish! The entire afternoon was filled with games. The girls participated in the fishing game, running races, the partner underwear race, the egg toss, the water balloon toss and the tug-of-war. Swept by the festive spirit, Dougal and I even participated in the games! We partnered in the underwear race against Chris and Darius. To participate, each partner steps into one leg opening of a giant pair of underwear and races to the finish line. I was certain we would end up in a face plant in the dirt, but we made it safely across the finish line. By the time they wrapped up the games, we were all sticky with sweat from the heat, eggs, dust and dirt. This tired bunch would have to head home for a shower and a nap.

In Butedale, Cassidy is tied up to the floating tree dock extension, which is its own kind of adventure.

Soon he hollered to us that he had a fish on! He caught a 40-pound halibut.

ELL COVE, ALASK A

And Along Came Dinner

Dougal and Cassidy celebrate the crew’s first catch in Alaska, a 40-pound halibut hooked after everyone had settled in for a quiet night.

When we were in Sitka, I broke down and finally bought some fish. Dougal was exasperated. “You are really going to buy fish?” “Trust me,” I told him, “as soon as I do, you will catch one.” I’ll get back to this. First, our experience in Ell Cove. We made our way from Sitka to Ell Cove over three days. We could have done it in a day, but we took our time waiting out the rapids at Sergius Narrows and ducking for shelter from the 40-knot winds in Chatham Strait. After all, we are getting used to the quiet nights at anchor. We stopped in Ell Cove to visit the Hidden Falls Hatchery. Once again, we were in awe of the anchorage. There was only one other boat when we arrived and the anchorage looked to be about the size of a bathtub. There is a very narrow opening to the anchorage, so you feel like you are in your own little world. Once we got back to the anchorage from the hatchery, another boat crew we frequently run into, the Salty Dawg folks, rode up on their dinghy to say hello. They asked if we had seen the cubs fishing for salmon over at the hatchery and showed off the photos they had captured. They recommended we wait until morning to head over, because the bears are often more bold after hours when the hatchery team is not around. We decided we would head over first thing in the morning. It was going to be a quiet night. We fired up a movie, the three of us curled up on the couch under a fuzzy blanket. Suddenly Dougal hopped up from his seat when he saw the fishing rod tip bending a bit. When he got outside, he appeared so nonchalant that we thought nothing of it. We thought it might be kelp. But soon he hollered to us that he had a fish on! He caught a 40-pound halibut. For the next two hours we fetched zippered freezer bags, dealt with fish guts, and filleted and cleaned the halibut.

Bear Country

Anan Bay Wildlife Observatory was one of the most memorable stops on our trip. Sixty permits are available per day during peak bear season (July and August), and we were lucky enough to secure a spot. It takes a bit of planning to get there, given its remote location and unsafe anchorage. And our visit was not without incident. We arrived the day before our permits and found an anchorage with secure holding just 6 miles across the channel at Fool’s Inlet. The name likely warned off other boaters, because we were the only boat in the large inlet. Despite its name, we found it to be a safe anchorage. We dropped the dinghy and crossed the channel to plan our landing for the next day. The next morning we were ready with our permits in hand … but the anchor and currents were not agreeing. After several attempts, we decided to motor around to the other side of the cove. From there we would be able to hike the half-mile path that leads to the ranger station. We secured the dinghy with a stern anchor attached to a device called an “anchor buddy” that is really a long bungee cord that pulled the boat out into deeper water after we got out on the beach. We tied the bowline off to a tree on shore and the anchor buddy pulled the line out to deeper water.

It was amazing to be so close to the bears.

Bears are a big attraction in Alaska, and the Cassidy crew saw them more than once, including at the Anan Bay Wildlife Observatory (above right) and at the Hidden Falls Hatchery near Ell Cove.

Dougal was careful to watch the depths and to try to account for the large tidal exchange. And we were off to see the bears. The observatory was amazing. We met the ranger at the ranger station and he gave us the quick bear tutorial. He told us to make a lot of noise on our three-quarters-of-a-mile walk to the observatory, to avoid catching bears by surprise, and also to keep our bear spray ready. He said the bears often use the path to transit down to the lagoon to catch fish. He also reminded us what to do if we encounter a bear: • Talk to them to let them know we are human. • Don’t run. • Lie flat on the ground if approached aggressively. We did not see any bears on the path, but we were welcomed by several black bears at the observatory. We sat for an hour or so, watching as a mama bear nursed her cubs, several bears went fishing and other bears lazily wandered along the rocky hillside. It was amazing to be so close to the bears, yet seemingly unnoticed by them. After we got our fill of bear fun, we wandered back to the beach. And found … the dinghy high and dry. Luckily there was no damage, but we had to wait about two hours for the tide to rise before we could leave. As I told Dougal, at least it was the dinghy and not the big boat!

COMPILED BY SEA STAFF

Boaters look forward to boating season for many reasons, from the personal and intimate to the social and public. Secret anchorages, journeys to personally significant locations, couples’ cruises and more occupy much of a cruising couple’s summer. But most boaters are social by nature, so happy hours, weekend raft-ups and dinner on the flybridge are very popular. Many boaters look forward to a specific event or two more than any other: rendezvous and rallies. They’re held up and down the West Coast, and they all hold the potential for significant fun, maybe a little mystery, probably some hijinks and big adventure. Educational seminars and informal classes — engine repair, trip planning, cleaning and maintenance, and navigation — are part of many rondy events, and they are definitely beneficial, but the real reason rondy events are so popular is because like-minded people get together and share stories of adventure on the high seas or close to home, swap tales of on-the-go repairs, exchange ideas for easy-to-fix meals and easy-to-whip-up cocktails, and compete in halfhearted races and contests. Rallies such as CUBAR and the Baja Ha-Ha give first-time long-distance cruisers a chance to experience the thrill and excitement of voyaging to new places without the consternation that comes with doing it alone. Veterans help the newbies, and a central group of people plan the stops along the way and all the other things that take some of the burden off the participants. With all that written, take a look at our alphabetical list and see if there’s an event or two with your name on it.  Ocean Alexander owners are known to deck out their boats for a rondy too. Nanaimo may be hard to say, but visitors to this warm harbor city will want to stay. BY DEANE HISLOP

NANAIMO IS A POPULAR CRUISING destination on the southeastern shore of Vancouver Island where boaters often hole up to wait for favorable conditions before they venture across the Strait of Georgia and destinations farther north. Such was the situation during our last visit. Known as the “Harbour City” for its incredible downtown harbor district, Nanaimo is the second-largest city on Vancouver Island. It was first known as Snuneymuxw — “great and mighty people” in the language of the Salish natives — and the first settlers who arrived in the mid-1800s translated the name into English as Nanaimo (pronounced na-nai-mo). In 1853 the Hudson Bay Company (HBC) built a fort to protect the town. As the city grew, the fort’s bastion (blockhouse) acted as the city hub and, like spokes of a wheel, roads branched out.

The Esplanade (left) gives pedestrians access to museums, shops restaurants and more. A modern theater (above) and the Bastion (below, right) offer experiences from eras far distant from each other. A ship-mast staircase provides access to the parking garage’s levels. At noon, locals fire a cannon to mark the time.

READY, SET, FIRE! The Bastion is the last of the original free-standing HBC bastions and is operated as an exhibit that is open for tours daily during the summer. Each day at about 11:30 a.m., a bagpiper dressed in a kilt begins to play outside the Bastion, just above the Port Authority Marina. His piping attracts an appreciative crowd, and many remain to observe the process of swabbing, priming and loading the antique cannon. At noon sharp, the bagpiper stops and they fire the cannon. With the touch of the torch, a cloud of smoke bursts forth and the great gun leaps in its shackles.

Local creativity is displayed throughout Nanaimo’s galleries and farmers markets, while visual arts, theatre and music are showcased in the Arts District and culminate during summer festivals. Just north of the Bastion, at Pioneer Waterfront Plaza, a Farmers Market with entertainment is held every Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., from mid-May to mid-September. Just up from the marina is Nanaimo Museum where visitors learn the history of the area, from its First Nations occupants to the discovery of coal in the area.

Marine Festival. Since 1967, Nanaimo has been hosting the annual Nanaimo Marine Festival and World Championship Bathtub Race, which consists of a weekend’s worth of activities. Each year contestants participate in the time-honored “Sacrifice to the Bathtub Gods” boat burning ceremony the evening before the race. The following day, skippers pilot boats made from bathtubs and attempt to navigate a 36-mile course. Other highlights of the festival include concerts, a street fair, a parade, fireworks and more.

Newcastle Island Side Trip Be sure to include a stop at Newcastle Island Provincial Park, in Nanaimo’s harbor. Traditionally known as Saysutshun by the Snuneymuxw people, this family-friendly marine provincial park is only accessible by foot-passenger ferry from Nanaimo’s Muffeo Sutten Park or by private boat. Definitely worth the effort to get there, the park offers a panoramic view of the Harbor City and the Coast Mountains. Activities include swimming, kayaking, hiking and more, and don’t miss the Newcastle Island Café, which is situated in a historic dance pavilion. Downtown is visible and easily walkable from the Inner Boat Basin.

BASIN MARINAS The Nanaimo Port Authority (NPA) oversees two marinas: W.E Mill Landing & Marina and the Inner Boat Basin. W.E Mill Landing & Marina offers 20-, 30-, and 50-amp power, water, Wi-Fi and a security gate. The Inner Boat Basin is located closest to town and offers water, 20- and 30-amp power on all floats, and 50- and 100-amp on some, showers and laundry facilities. Boaters are requested to hail the Port Authority on VHF Channel 67 for a slip assignment prior to entering the marinas. Reservations are suggested for both facilities.

MORE THAN A MARINA With all Nanaimo has to offer, it’s one of the nicest harbor cities in the Pacific Northwest. Many visiting boaters enjoy a great time in Nanaimo without ever wandering more than a block or two from the boat basin. Several coffee shops, restaurants, an ice creamery, and gift stores can be found in and around the Nanaimo Boat Basin. Seasonally fresh seafood is sometimes sold at the Nanaimo Fisherman’s Market dock in the inner basin. Fishermen sell live crab, fresh prawns, halibut and salmon from their boat. We always use Nanaimo as a provisioning stop, and there is no better place to purchase dwindling galley items than at the Port Plaza shopping center immediately PNW-6  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  MAY 2019

Gina’s is a funky Mexican cantina that has been in business for more than 33 years. The short uphill walk from the Boat Basin is well worth the effort. During one visit we took an after-dinner stroll through the Diana Krall Plaza (across the street from the Boat Basin) and the

One of the highlights of Nanaimo is a visit to the Dinghy Pub on Protection Island. outdoor plaza was packed with hockey fans watching the Stanley Cup Finals on a large screen high on the side of the building and cheering for their beloved Vancouver Canucks. It was one big sports party with everyone dressed in blue and green.

NIGHT ON THE TOWN

south of the Boat Basin. A Thrifty Foods supermarket, a B.C. liquor store, a London drugstore, and a variety of shops are all within easy carry-back distance to the boat. There are also several fast-food and sandwich shops. Should you need some boat repair parts or fishing equipment, Harbour Chandler is located south of the boat basin at the intersection of Esplanade and Port Way. It’s worth a visit just to wander the aisles. I can’t count the times I’ve purchased something I didn’t know I needed.

SATISFYING MEAL Nanaimo’s renowned cuisine goes beyond the classic dessert bar that shares the city’s name, including inspired fresh produce and seafood harvested from the surrounding area. Culinary options range from Indian to Thai, Mediterranean to Ukrainian; there’s something to suit any crewmember’s palate.

For lunch Arlene and I split a generous and delicious order of fish and chips at Trollers, a floating seafood restaurant in the basin. Another fine restaurant in the basin, with fine Mexican cuisine, is Penny’s Palapas. For many people, one of the highlights of Nanaimo is a visit to the Dinghy Pub on Protection Island. The Protection Island foot ferry departs from the south end of the Boat Basin at 10 minutes after the hour and takes pub patrons and island residents on a short crossing to the pub’s dock. The Dinghy Pub has family and “adults only” seating areas and features music on summer evenings. One of our Nanaimo must-stops for dinner is Gina’s Mexican Café. Fondly known as “The Pink House on the Hill,”

Trollers Fish & Chips (top), brightly colored Gina’s and Penny’s Palapas are but three of the dining choices on the Nanaimo waterfront.

Nanaimo’s Commercial Street Night Market is held Thursday evenings from 5 to 9 p.m., from late June through August. Commercial Street is closed to traffic between Terminal Avenue and Church and Chapel streets, and downtown merchants and vendors display their wares. Many downtown venues cater to night owls. Whether you want to eat or drink, catch a concert or dance the night away, there are venues that will fit the bill. Queen’s Hotel, Cambie, Lighthouse Pub, Nanaimo Bar, Corner Lounge, Modern Café, Old City Station Pub, Taphouse, Palace Hotel and Vault Café are some good bets. For dance clubs, try Level 2, Koncept and Evolve. It’s little wonder why boaters on their summer cruise north or south include a day or two in Nanaimo. There is something of interest for both captain and crew.

QUICK ESCAPE

TURNING A NEGATIVE INTO A POSITIVE An unexpected detour led to a discovery worth a return trip to Campbell River. BY DEANE HISLOP

LEAVING BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION SOUND AND going to the community of Campbell River wasn’t on the day’s floatplan, but during a routine check of Easy Goin’s engine room I noticed water under the starboard engine. A little investigation revealed the raw-water pump was dripping. With two months of cruising north before returning home ahead of us, I decided to get the pump replaced, so we weighed anchor and headed west across the northern end of the Strait of Georgia. Sitting tied to the dock for three days until a new pump could be shipped in and installed was not our idea of fun. We had never visited Campbell River, so we took the opportunity to check out what it had to offer visiting boaters. What we discovered will draw us back again. With its backdrop of snowcapped mountains, Campbell River is an attractive city

with a waterfront downtown that overlooks Discovery Passage and a busy harbour composed of three marinas, a small-craft harbor, a fisherman’s wharf, a cruise ship terminal and a ferry landing. MOOR YOUR VESSEL We choose to moor the ailing Easy Goin’

at Discovery Harbour Marina 1 , because adjacent to the marina is Ocean Pacific Marine Store & Boatyard 2 , which happens to be an authorized Cummins repair facility. In addition, it has a well-stocked chandlery and facilitates overnight delivery from major suppliers in Vancouver and Victoria for just about anything — including a raw-water pump. Operated by the Campbell River Indian Band, part of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation, the marina is a first-class facility and Campbell River’s largest; it features 24-hour video surveillance and monitors VHF Channel 66A. A massive rock breakwater protects the marina, which offers guest slips and 2,400 feet of side-tie moorage to accommodate the largest yachts. The restricting factor is the marina’s depth of 14 feet. Also available is 20-, 30-, 50- and 100-amp single/3-phase power, water hookups, washrooms, showers, a coin-operated laundry, a garbage drop, Wi-Fi and in-slip pumpout service. In the northern portion of the marina is Discovery Harbour Fuels 3 , which offers diesel, gas, a propane bottle exchange, kerosene, and a small convenience store.

NOMAR BUMPERS ®

Nomar® Bumpers are a soft-mounted bumper which absorbs impact and allows you to slide in and out of your slip with NO FRICTION, DRAG OR MARRING of your hull. This makes for a safer & less stressful docking experience by allowing everyone to stay on board. Nomar® Bumpers eliminate the need for fenders & are perfect for tight docking situations and narrow slips. They also allow the vessel closer to the dock for easier and safer boarding. The Discovery Passage Aquarium 8 is just above the docks at Fisherman’s Wharf, adjacent to the Maritime Heritage Museum. It is small but the exhibits are well done, and the young crewmembers will enjoy it. Crews looking for adventure will find charter companies that specialize in wildlife watching tours and fishing charters, right in the marina. Campbell River offers other activities, and one of the newest thrills may of interest to many boaters. It’s a Zodiac tour that takes passengers to where the water boils and surges, creating some of the world’s fastest tidal waters: Seymour Narrows. At this location, tidal currents can reach 15 knots, and turbulent tiderips, eddies and whirlpools form. ALL BOATERS SHOULD take proactive measures and appropriately manage their vessels through to their end of life. But that’s not always the case, so Canada’s government took action by passing Bill C-64, which increases owner responsibility and liability for vessels. Not complying with the Abandoned Vessels Act can result in penalties of up to $50,000 for individuals and $250,000 for companies or corporations. Boating BC received a grant under Transport Canada’s Abandoned Boats Program to support a public relations campaign that will be leveraged through municipal and industry gatherings and promoted by Association members throughout the province. An important aspect of the campaign is the creation of a database that includes boat disposal options. For more information, visit boatingbc.ca/boatdisposal.

SEASI DE CH AT

MEET DANIEL WEINSTOCK

Unlimited Master Mariner and Professor at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, Calif.

DANIEL WEINSTOCK EARNED HIS BACHELOR’S degree in nautical industrial technology from California Maritime Academy in 1984, and the alum has been a professor at Cal Maritime since 1996. A boater since elementary school, when his dad bought him an 11-and-a-half foot wooden skiff with a 5.5 hp Johnson, Weinstock has owned and worked on a long succession of boats, including a stint on an oil tanker. It was from that tanker, somewhere in the Middle East — this is after he earned a master’s degree in education from Dowling College in New York — that Weinstock applied for and earned the position of assistant professor at Cal Maritime. Now a full professor, Weinstock shared his thoughts with Sea during an email interview. SEA: How does CSUM differ from the rest of the Cal State system? Weinstock: We are viewed as unique. We offer many classes where the students are challenged to apply the theory in real-world situations. We have at least five courses on the water where students learn to maneuver boats ranging in size from 26 feet all the way up to 63 feet. Additionally, we use a 500-foot ship, T/S Golden Bear, as a training platform. It is our floating laboratory. During the summer, the training ship goes on its annual training cruise. This is one of the places that our students learn the importance of understanding the underlying theory, as they are expected to apply theory to work through the many challenges one experiences while sailing through the oceans. We have many classes where students are given the opportunity to take initiative, make decisions, and be accountable for the results. We have upward of 12 courses where these basic tenets of experiential learning are practiced. All students, regardless of program, are required to complete an industry-based co-op, and many students complete more. The experience enhances our hands-on approach to education, which

aids our students to earn a career after graduation. In fact, we currently have the highest job placement rate and highest average starting salary of comparable programs throughout the CSU system. We have visited, while aboard the training ship, many faraway ports and exotic places from Easter Island to Midway to the Aleutian Islands. The ship also transits the Panama Canal and sails up into the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and even the Mediterranean Sea. This year, our journey will take us through the Panama Canal, Barbados, Lisbon, Azores, Miami, and then Galveston. The opportunities that this presents to a college student are far reaching. What’s the profile of a typical incoming CSUM student? I’m not sure whether there is any one typical profile. Many students come here with no prior experience on the water, although many do have some connection to the water or the maritime industry. A majority of our students are from California, yet we have students from Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Texas, Florida, Michigan and Tennessee. Our current student body is approximately a 65/35 split, male-to-female ratio. All of our students are members of our Corps of Cadets, something else that distinguishes

us from other CSU campuses. All students (or cadets) wear uniforms during the day, gather for morning formation and stand a variety of “watches” throughout campus. Is there a major or two that is most popular with students? The marine transportation and marine engineering degrees (both U.S. Coast Guard licensed) are popular. The School of Maritime Transportation, Logistics and Management is a newly formed school — one of three we have — that holds tremendous opportunities as a platform to educate students interested in the transportation of goods, whether domestic or through imports/exports. Cal Maritime has a very strong reputation with our facilities engineering technology, for shore-side power-station opportunities. The School of Letters & Science also has a Global Studies & Maritime Affairs program for students seeking a position in government affairs. We hope to start a new program in oceanography in the fall 2020 semester. What are the most common careers CSUM graduates pursue? Graduates can work on and near the water. Those working on the water will utilize the United States Coast Guard license they earn while in the program. These students will sail aboard ships, tugboats, ferries, oil drill rigs and other seaborne craft. Many others will go into the shore-side industry. Some will work at ocean terminals, other will gain positions in a variety of supply-chain roles, including procurement, production planners, inventory specialists, transportation analysts and operations supervisors. Are there any misperceptions around the term “merchant marine”? Yes, the biggest misperception around the term “merchant mariner” is that we are in the military. We are not. However, in times of war many of us agree to sail aboard merchant vessels carrying military cargo in support of our military. We are the civilian “trucking” force that moves goods via the waterways, only we use floating vessels and not wheeled vehicles.

ASK A BROKER

BROKERAGE ADVICE

MAY’S QUESTION:

I know I need to make improvements to my boat before I sell it, but how can I tell if a fix is worth making? NOT ALL IMPROVEMENTS are created equally when it comes to a return on investment. Knowing the boat’s market segment and working with a trusted broker, a seller can determine if any improvements are needed. Brokers generally agree that if a seller has a limited budget, he should spend money on combating odors (e.g., holding tanks) and making sure the engine room and bilge are clean. John Murray and his wife, Karen, after selling their Carver 380, searched the West Coast for a used boat. Murray said odors emanating from compartments are a reflection of how well, or not, a boat is maintained. “When you walk on a vessel, you want it to smell good — that’s the bottom line,” he said. “I have a plumbing business. We have 15 vehicles, three tractors and two semis. All those put together don’t take

the energy it takes to keep a boat safe and maintained.” A seller should consider hiring a surveyor to do a presale inspection on the boat. While a survey isn’t cheap — $18 per foot or more — it can provide valuable insight on what needs to be fixed. A survey can also head off issues by disclosing potential problems early in the sales process. Jeff Keiser, owner of Keiser Marine Survey in the San Francisco Bay Area, said an inspection gives the seller a good starting point for deciding where to spend limited improvement dollars. “You end up with a 30- to 40-page report that goes through every single system and tells you every single problem,” Keiser said. “At the end of the report, I relist the problems in order of importance, so you have a good work list to go through.” Excerpted from the “Sweat the Details” feature in the August 2017 issue of Sea.

What are a few questions I can ask potential brokers to see if they possess the right kind of skills for today?

A broker should understand the marketplace for the kind of boat a client intends to buy or sell, and she needs to know that segment inside out. She needs to have an excellent knowledge of pricing and have reach — familiarity with not just local but national and international markets. Does she have co-brokering agreements with other brokers in different regions? Does she have a good database of reputable shipyards, surveyors, loan institutions and title companies to make the selling/buying process go smoothly? Is the broker digitally savvy and does she use the latest marketing techniques, including direct email, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and advertising in print and digital boating publications? Excerpted from the “8 Qualities of a Yacht Sales Professional” feature in the August 2018 issue of Sea.
