ALOHA (MEANS GOODBYE) WELL, IT’S BEEN A good run. At a month shy of
10 years, this managing editor will be jumping ship. After we put the December issue to bed next month — it will be my 119th — my desk (carefully emptied of anything incriminating) will be occupied by someone new; the magazine and its attendant newsletters, website and social media accounts will be the purview of a yet-to-be-determined caretaker of words, content and editorial voice. I’ve really enjoyed my near decade at the helm of a magazine that’s about to turn 112 years old. That’s a hell of a lot of issues. The brokers, dealers, builders, manufacturers and other editors in the industry have been great to work with, talk to, travel and test boats with, and bend an elbow with at home and on the road. I want to thank anyone who came through with a boat to test at the last minute or endured an 11th-hour Q&A because I forgot an earlier interview time. I will definitely miss the opportunity to get out on the ocean in a brand new 60-footer and call it a job (much to the chagrin of my family and friends on Facebook). Or to travel to Australia or Taiwan or Italy in the name of work. People don’t want to believe that more than 95 percent of my time is spent at the desk doing battle with words, acting as the arbiter of punctuation and conjuring story ideas out of thin air. But it’s true. That said, the other
three or four percent is pretty dang good. Better than most. Wanna say thanks to Duncan McIntosh (and his late wife, Teresa) and Jeff Fleming for the opportunity. Early on, I wondered what I’d gotten myself into. The industry was at a bit of a nadir, suffering the debilitating effects of the Great Recession, which took a few years to shake off. Since then, however, I’ve watched and written about an industry that has rebuilt itself through innovation, grit, streamlining and relentless development of new product. Freelance writers, I hope you know how much you’re appreciated. Your efforts have ensured our pages are always full and our readers are always informed. My apologies if I ever changed the meaning of something you wrote or didn’t get you paid on time. OK, I can hear the music playing me off the stage — sounds like the theme song from “Jackass” — so I better be going. Not sure what the next thing is for me, but this one’s been a pleasure. Or should I say it’s been a hull of a good time? Probably shouldn’t. Too late.

With an interior design from outside the yachting world, tthe he Sanlorenzo SX76 Lissoni version makes a statement.
SANLORENZO LAUNCHED its SX line of yachts with the SX88, a yacht meant to be a crossover (hence, the X) between a flybridge motoryacht and an explorer yacht. The builder b uilder partnered with renowned Italian interior designer Piero Lissoni for a special vversion ersion of the yacht called, appropriately, the Lissoni version, which envisioned the interrior ior as an open space with windows that reach nearly floor to ceiling — think loft living. Hee wanted to eliminate rigid separations between the interior spaces, and did. H Following Following quickly in the wake of the SX88 is the SX76, a 78-footer that makes the most m ost of onboard space — it also has a Lissoni version — and gives buyers wide latitude tto o customize many aspects of their yacht, from the marble and wood to the furniture and handcrafted h andcrafted elements. Already-beautiful Italian styling is only enhanced by each owner’s vision for the yacht’s flow and personality. The main cabin encompasses an aft salon, a mid-galley — which can be completely or partially enclosed or wide open (Lissoni version) — On a yacht and a forward dining area that comes in three table configurations. that eschews In version A and B, traditional stairs lead to the flybridge; in the closed spaces, Lissoni version, a sweeping staircase leads up. Up top, the flybridge features a second helm and a buyer’s choice of a small galley with a dining area or a more salon-like space. A large settee/sun lounge combo occupies a significant portion of the bow, offering another outdoor space to gather. Where the swim platform would normally be is more of a lower cockpit. It’s a large, open deck that can hold a dinghy — a garage without a roof — and when the dinghy is in the water, the deck can become a teak beach for sun worshippers. > Monte Carlo Yachts, montecarloyachts.it Sanlorenzo Yachts, sanlorenzoamericas.com

Good Tip My wife was getting into the kayak from the swim
platform and instead fell halfway into the water. The weather was cool, so she was dressed for the cold spring temperatures. She had her life jacket on so she was safe, but we couldn’t get her back up onto the swim platform because of all the wet, heavy clothes. She held on while I went back into the boat and got the dive ladder and attached it so she could easily climb back onto the boat. The lesson we learned is “the ladder gets attached before anyone gets into the kayaks.” Hope this tip helps our fellow boaters. Norm Tesch, via email

It’s a Pool Party
At 137 feet, 9 inches, the Elle.D concept by Gabriele Teruzzi isn’t exactly a small boat, but it packs in the features. With steel as the appointed hull material, Elle.D is meant to showcase Teruzzi’s mission to reshape life aboard with big, open spaces, natural light everywhere and a profile sure to cause double takes. A glass-walled pool forward on the second deck, a second smaller one on the third deck and another aft — a waterfall feeds it — that abuts a bar are sure to be the co-centers of attention. But a huge main-deck owner’s suite and multiple salons and dining areas won’t be intimidated by their outdoor feature-mates. It’s definitely a “wow” concept.

MEXICO REPORT
By CAPT. PAT RAINS
AVOID 5 SOUTHOF-THEBORDER NO-NOS
Items and actions that may be acceptable in U.S. waters are frowned upon or forbidden in Mexican cruising grounds. WHAT’S SO DIFFERENT ABOUT cruising
Mexico? It’s not just the warmer water; it’s a completely different history, culture and social structure. What’s considered normal for folks who live on the U.S. West Coast is sometimes abnormal or unacceptable to people who live along Mexico’s West Coast. Even experienced U.S. recreational boaters and long-range cruisers sometimes get a few surprises when they visit Mexico for the first time or venture beyond the perimeters of Mexico’s comfortable marinas and resorts. Some behaviors that are generally acceptable up here in the U.S. are frowned upon down there. What follows are six of the biggest cruising-in-Mexico no-nos. Avoid them.
10
Firearms
No guns or ammo are allowed on a boat in Mexico, period. It doesn’t matter where a firearm is registered, doesn’t matter if it’s unloaded and locked a safe. Having a gun is the quickest way for an entire crew to see the inside of a Mexican prison cell — not as visitors — and for a boat to be confiscated. Such a restriction may come as a shock to U.S. citizens who aren’t used to traveling abroad, and especially to residents of states
that issue concealed or open carry permits. But in a foreign country, its laws are enforced. How could Mexican authorities find out a weapon is aboard? Every vessel, vehicle and airplane that enters Mexico is subject to official boarding and inspection. That includes recreational boats coming down from the U.S. West Coast, coming up from Central America or arriving from the open Pacific. Read the “Boarding at Sea” sidebar.
Drugs
No marijuana, either. Recent efforts within Mexico to shorten prison terms for marijuana possession don’t apply to tourists or other non-Mexican citizens. Again, the laws wherever you came from do not apply to you in Mexico. Beware: In glamorous resort ports, the friendly guy offering to sell you a little “moto” is not your friend. He’s calculating how to spend the thousand bucks he’s going to blackmail you for, as you try to keep from going to jail.

Mexican Navy Contacts
Hail Away
Do not hesitate to ask the Mexican navy for help. All along Baja, ocean searches and rescues (SAR) are handled by the Mexican navy (Armada de Mexico), and the authorities there work hand in hand with the U.S. Coast Guard in SAR situations. But you can also call the Mexican navy — use a VHF or satellite phone — for weather reports, navigational advice, personal security and more. For example, in Turtle Bay, we once hired a mechanic for two days to help us fix the transmission in a boat we were delivering up to San Diego. We paid him handsomely for the first day, but the next afternoon he arrived drunk, demanded more money, threatened us and threw beer cans at the boat. We hailed the local Armada on VHF 16. The smartly dressed comandante arrived within minutes, briefly held court atop the fuel dock, and told the local to go home, sober up and not bother us. Then the comandante recommended a much better mechanic, who helped us finish the job. See “Mexican Navy Contacts” sidebar.
Silence Is Golden
Don’t “step on” VHF conversations. If people are already talking on the VHF channel you want but are conversing in Spanish, don’t “step on” them and blast away in English. Just because you don’t speak their language doesn’t give you any right to interrupt. That’s impolite radio etiquette in any language — anywhere on Earth — and you’re likely to earn the verbal wrath of everyone within range. Due to Baja’s complex geography, you may hear only half the conversation. So listen for a few seconds and then ask, “Esta ocupado?” (“Is this frequency in use?”) If it is, simply say “Perdon” (peardoan) — “Excuse me” — and try a different channel.
a lobster could cost that guy his job, his license, and his panga and outboard — his family’s livelihood. On the other hand, if a panguero swings by an anchored boat and holds up a fresh fish, that’s fine. I usually ask him to fillet it, which he’ll do for a couple extra bucks. Have zip bags ready. However, if nobody is looking, he may casually uncover a bucket of lobsters and claim they’re his family’s share of that day’s catch, so it’s OK for him to sell them. Unfortunately, these are always juvenile lobsters known as “shorts” — the carapace is less than 3 inches long — and too small to qualify as a legal catch. Do not participate in this short-sighted practice, or lobster season might get canceled next year. If you do buy lobsters at anchor, don’t broadcast the fact on VHF so crew on other boats can buy some too. Word will get back to the man’s boss.
Don’t Solicit
Appropriate Attire
Never use the VHF ask a lobster diver if he has any fresh lobsters for sale. Why? All the lobster divers who work on the Pacific side of Baja are members of one of 26 local co-ops, or “cooperativos,” so they’re required by law to deliver their catch directly to the co-op’s dock. Selling
Don’t dress “boat casual” at traditional Christmas celebrations. Gracious Mexican families often invite a few visiting gringos to share in their formal holiday festivities. Lucky attendees shouldn’t wear flip-flops, swimsuits or short shorts, and men need to wear a shirt. Remember to bring a hostess gift; food (cheese, fruit, cookies) or flowers are good choices.
People dialing from a landline phone need to include the country code 052. Boaters can also call on a satellite phone. • Ensenada: (646) 172-4000; sat phone, 8105-2154. • Los Cabos: (624) 105-1110; sat phone, 8144-2209. • La Paz: (612) 122-651; sat phone, 8107-2483. • Santa Rosalia; sat phone, 8143-2235. • Mazatlan: (669) 910-0552; sat phone, 8111-2664. • Puerto Vallarta: (322) 221-1123; sat phone, 8115-4277.
Boarding at Sea Here’s what I’ve come to expect during a routine boarding at sea by the Mexican navy (Armada de Mexico). A gray navy vessel will hail you on VHF and ask for some routine information, such as boat name, registration, last port, next port, and people’s name and citizenship. Just like the U.S. Navy or Coast Guard, while they run your answers through their database, they may also ask if any firearms are on board. They can legally request you to slow down or stop, to prepare for their small-boat boarding party to come aboard and perform an inspection. The skipper can open the lifelines or transom gate to show them where to come aboard safely, hang a couple of fenders, and then step well away and let them board and inspect. The captain or one crewmember can usually accompany the boarding party belowdecks. When done, the boarding party’s highest ranking officer may ask the boat owner to sign and date a form letter that states they inspected your boat, didn’t find any contraband and didn’t do any damage. I always sign it and ask for (or make) a copy of that form, just to keep on file in the boat’s documents.

THE EXPERTS By DEANE HISLOP
In addition to incorporating the water injector, risers protect against water flooding back into the engine. Yachts that routinely back down, such as sportfishing vessels, and have exhaust outlets in the transom will benefit from having surge tubes at the forward end of the line to prevent back-flooding.
EVERY ENGINE MUST EXHALE A properly maintained exhaust system is vital to an engine’s performance.
HUMAN RESUSCITATION HAS A mantra: “Out goes the bad air, in comes the good.” That applies to a boat’s engine too. A properly sized and well-designed marine exhaust system is the best way to get rid of the bad air and optimize an engine’s performance. Anything that inhibits the flow of exhaust gases creates excessive back pressure, which decreases the amount of horsepower delivered. Back pressure is created by the length of the exhaust tube, its diameter, the bends along the way, and the restrictions imposed by silencers, couplings, valves and water injectors. Short, fat and straight is better than long, skinny and winding. Marine exhaust systems for inboard engines are divided into two basic types: dry and wet. Most yachts have a wet exhaust system, generally injecting water from the engine’s raw-water discharge into the exhaust stream, downstream of the exhaust manifold or turbocharger, to cool the gases and quiet the engine noise. The cooled gases also allow the use of fiberglass, rubber and silicone components. Such systems can safely discharge the cooled exhaust through the hull near or below the waterline.
TYPES
Dry exhaust systems have been around the longest, but they’re primarily used on commercial vessels or other specialty applications, such as high-performance craft. Dry exhausts require all-steel/iron construction, so they can withstand higher temperatures. The discharge must be topside, clear of guest areas, but in unfavorable wind conditions, such a location may deposit soot on the deck and guests. Wet systems commonly use a perforated ring — it may be a separate component, an integral part of the risers when they’re needed to get a downward slope on the exhaust line, or a part of the silencer — to inject cooling water into the exhaust. Boat owners have many stock silencers to choose from, or they can contract with a specialty fabricator for custom units in fiberglass, stainless steel or aluminum. They’re available in both vertical and axial configurations, to suit the space available in any machinery area. 12
UNDERWATER EXHAUST
To circumvent the back-flooding noise, soot and fumes of transom exhausts, many yachts have underwater exhaust. A bypass must be fitted above the waterline to prevent excessive back pressure at idle, and a solenoid-operated valve is sometimes included to close the bypass once the yacht is underway. If the underwater exhaust is not of continuous, substantial construction to well above the waterline, it should include a shutoff valve. The outlets of such exhausts shouldn’t lead the gases into the props, rudders, trim tabs or bottom strakes, because the aeration and turbulence undermine the efficiency of the props and the hydrodynamic effectiveness of the appendages. All components of the system should be suitable for marine-exhaust temperatures and chemical exposure. Look for ABYC, NMMA and/or SAE approval stamps on hoses and flex bellows, and keep in mind that type 316 stainless steel is preferred to the more common types 302 or 304 for hose clamps. Every section of the system should be insulated where appropriate, to protect crewmembers and to keep heat from escaping into the engine room. All components should be well supported by resilient mounts or hangers. Sections upstream of the flex bellows should be supported from the engine, to move with it, and sections downstream should be supported from the yacht’s structure, independent of the engine’s movement. If you monitor only an engine

temperature gauge, an exhaust system may be damaged long before you notice overheating. And never ignore overheating: “It must be a problem with the gauge” isn’t the correct response. Exhaust systems, like all boat systems, need regular inspection to ensure they continue to function properly. Check hoses for leaking, kinking, chafing, bulging and other signs of deterioration. Verify each
GRINDING GRID’S GEARS
hose is double clamped and that hose clamps are tight and free of corrosion. Also look for leaks at other system components, paying special attention to engine exhaust manifolds and elbow joints. Manifolds and risers should be periodically removed, cleaned and pressure-tested. Heat-resistant exhaust insulation covering should also be removed periodically to allow a full inspection.
TIME. “JUST THINK OF what
you could do if you saved time doing XYZ.” That was Time Is of the Essence my father speaking. That statement followed, “Think of what you could do with all the money you’d save if you quit smoking.” Several two-seat Thunderbirds and two divorces later I didn’t have the cars, spouses or money, so I suppose that thought was moot. But as I trundle down the roads in the early morning, I wonder as I see lips moving, talking to invisible Blueteeth, who the hell else is awake this morning, and how much time is being saved by dragging somebody away from his first Keurig — saving time by not brewing a whole pot — to discuss something totally inconsequential? My phone was dormant most of 2018 due to constant rain, so maybe it’s Mr. Smith Those five seconds you calling me to say he never got his boat out last year, and since Memorial weekend is only a month saved will suddenly away, maybe I could make him a hero by servicing become hours of it while he massages a big sales contract. No, that would mean I’d be talking to him right now, so escape from the he’s going to use up all that time he saved calling insanity in the world. somebody at 0530 from the intersection of Routes 33 and 227 and call me the Friday evening of the holiday weekend, telling me he didn’t have time to remember to call me to service the boat, and would I “slip by” his house to make sure everything’s okay with it … if I have the time? Do you remember bag phones? I had one because customers wanted to know what time I was going to be at their job, and I never knew, because I didn’t have any idea how long the current job would take. The concept was that the next customer’s time was pinched, sliced, diced and marinated from a busy day, and my modifying it by my arrival based on the previous job would require him to change everything in his schedule so he could find some more time to find out what I did to fix his engine. After that came the flip phone, eliminating the bag phone, antennae and cords, but time was wasted on flipping the phone open, rather than unzipping the bag. Score: Unzip: 10 seconds. Flip open: three seconds. Saved: seven seconds. What to do with them? Ahhhh! Enough seconds saved will provide enough time to invent a phone nobody talks on but stares at continually while pushing at things with his thumbs and bouncing off light poles — in cars and walking. If you’ve saved seconds by calling a subordinate before either of you gets to the office, assign those seconds to the pleasure of dropping a Danforth hook in a secluded cove and watching a sunset with your spouse and a glass of wine; or drop a snelled hook on an incoming tide and watch a sunrise with your best fishing buddy. Those few seconds you saved will suddenly become hours of escape from the insanity in the world. Should you see my boat on the water, I’m not saving seconds just by turning my old flip phone off and taking a nap. I’m in the “saving me” mode. SEAMAGAZINE.COM NOVEMBER 2019 13

BoatLIFE Boat Cleaner cleans gelcoat, clear coat, paint, varnished surfaces, marine canvas and sailcloth. Reef friendly, it can be used in baitwells without concern, and rinse water can run overboard. This product passes California and European guidelines for biodegradable products. boatlife.com

MARITIMO X50
Stylish and efficient, this Australian midsize cruiser features solid performance and a signature hidden aft surprise. introduced its X Series in 2018, and I was lucky enough to test the first model, the X60, last fall. After that experience, I looked forward to testing the second sport coupe in the line, the X50, before it arrived in the U.S.
AUSTR ALIAN BOAT BUILDER MARITIMO
Like its larger sibling, the X50 features unique styling and a signature aft cabin with an opening transom that connects the cabin to the swim platform. An exciting addition to the enclosed flybridge motoryachts and sedans Maritimo has been building for years, X Series boats are designed by Tom Barry-Cotter, son of Maritimo’s founder, Bill Barry-Cotter. The younger BarryCotter’s modern touch can be seen throughout, from the sleek look of the curved cabin top to the Euro-style interior that pairs stainless steel and varnished wood with high-end fabrics and wall coverings.
PERFORMER
The X Series is not only about aesthetics. Tom is not simply an accomplished designer; he is a top offshore powerboat racer and understands how to maximize performance in shaft-driven boats. He incorporates that knowledge into the X50, noting that the customizable aft accommodations increase the total living space and help balance the hull, allowing for reduced shaft angles that enhance performance, fuel economy and ride comfort. All of this creates an efficient, stylish cruiser that is fun to drive. I caught up with Tom and the new
Maritimo X50 at the Sydney International Boat Show. He explained that performance is imperative in all Maritimo yachts and the X50 needed to maintain the speed, handling and efficiency of its larger siblings. He also packed as much comfort and useable cabin space as possible into this midsized cruiser. Finally, he did it all without ruining the lines of the boat. X Series boats must have the contoured styling and soft lines that keep them sporty and modern looking. After the show I was able to run the boat partway up the Australian coast, and the X50 performed admirably. Maritimo’s hydraulic steering tracked straight with no effort on the wheel, even in a swell, and was responsive during maneuvering. The boat leaned naturally into high-speed 33-knot hard turns, dropping only a few knots before regaining speed quickly once it was re-centered. Between 1500 and 2500 rpm, the X50’s range dropped slightly, from 375 to 321 n.m., meaning the boat can run at any speed from 14 to 32 knots without paying much of a penalty for speed. Using no tabs while cruising offshore at 23 knots (77 percent load) in a slight rolling swell, the fuel burn was 43 gph. I felt like the boat could run all day at that speed. The speed, range and
Not often seen on a 52-footer, the space normally reserved as a tender garage can be a third stateroom or a beach club (pictured opposite, bottom left and top right). efficiency of the X50 make it a capable coastal cruiser, and its handling characteristics and Australian pedigree mean it is built to handle offshore conditions commonly found along the U.S. West Coast, south into Mexico or north to Canada and Alaska.
AFT SURPRISE
The profile of the X50 is sleek and inviting. The hull has substantial freeboard, and angular hull windows and raked-back abovedeck gunwales create a tapered bow. Stainless railings with angled stanchions that jut forward create a purposeful look and keep passengers on the sidedecks safe. The blackened windshield slants back and flows into the curved cabin top, which transitions to a wedge-shaped cockpit overhang with radar and satellite domes inked out in black above. The swim platform can be equipped as a tender lift. Twin stairwells lead to the cockpit above and conceal fender and line storage. A blackened window and hatch at the transom look deceptively normal, but a button’s touch raises the entire transom on actuators and reveals a cabin below and connects it to the swim platform. This signature X Series feature provides buyers with usable space few other boats of this size contain, and it allows for some appealing options. The aft cabin can be a tender garage, a twin-berth cabin, or a Beach Club. The most versatile option, the Beach Club, features access stairs from the transom adjacent to a counter that looks aft and faces the swim platform. The opposite bulkhead has a wet bar, storage and a widescreen TV. To port is a full-size head with a separate shower compartment. Beneath the aft counter, a double bed conveniently folds out and converts the area to a sleeping cabin. Ideal when anchored, this cabin provides bathers a respite from the sun and access to a head and shower that doesn’t require them to track water through the cockpit and salon. On a temperate night with the transom open, the beach club offers a unique view of the water and stars, creating a romantic spot to stargaze while relaxing at

INSIDE SCOOP
The aft cabin connects to the salon via an internal staircase with an engine room access door. The X50 has a simple, uncluttered engine room that features standing headroom and easy access to the engines and equipment. Shaft drives,
which Maritimo specializes in, allow such a unique aft cabin and engine room setup, which would be difficult to accomplish with pod drives. Entering the X50 from the swim platform is accomplished by going through the aft cabin or up to the cockpit on either side. The cockpit has aft seating with stainless drink holders and a wet bar with an electric

OPERATIONAL HUB
The helm, situated to starboard, has twin adjustable bucket seats and a compass, engine monitors, controls and twin MFDs within close proximity. Throttles adjacent the opening side window can be reached easily from the helm, as can an optional Yacht Controller joystick. The joystick controls the engines and the bow and stern thrusters, making for easy close-hand maneuvering, even with shafts. Visibility aft from the helm is good, looking across the cockpit, but the Yacht Controller remote control gives operators a moveable wing station that provides control and delivers views of either side and the swim platform. Three window panels provide good visibility forward for a captain who is standing or seated; visibility is only impeded slightly by the wide corner mullions. The space between the seat and tilt wheel felt a bit tight when standing but was better when I was seated.
Accommodations include a full-beam master suite.
COMFORT ZONE
Belowdecks accommodations include a full-beam master suite with a centerline queen bed, 6 feet, 2 inches or more of headroom, and lots of storage. Amenities include a flat-screen TV, side windows with opening portholes, a vanity with a cushioned cube seat, a hanging locker with a mirror, and a lounge seat. The master head constricts to 13 inches between the wall and the toilet but opens up at the sink. The shower, with a bench and a basketball-player-friendly 7 feet, 8 inches of headroom under an opening hatch, is spacious. Guest accommodations include a forward VIP whose queen-size berth is angled to provide walk-around access. Other features include an opening hatch and a hanging locker. The head opens into the VIP and the corridor. With the Beach Club bed pulled out, the boat has three cabins and three heads — all on a 50-footer. The new Maritimo X50 is a sporty cruiser that performs well and is packed with features. Maritimo delivers quality construction, ease of maintenance and performance in a stylish, fun-to-drive package. Read Hammerman’s review of the X60 at seamagazine.com/maritimo-x60.

Packed with amenities that include a fullbeam master stateroom, the latest SUV model from Down Under is on U.S. shores.
everyone should experience. Sydney is a boating city thanks to miles — well, kilometers — of harbor shoreline that wind back into river-like inlets from downtown to the suburbs. Much of the harbor is lined with waterfront homes, many with docks or moorings.
TO THE TEST
During our sea trial we traversed Sydney Harbour and dealt with the bustling ferry traffic, and then we escaped through “The Heads,” which are sheer sandstone cliffs that rise spectacularly from the Tasman Sea. Once outside we headed 20 miles north where the rocky coastline opens at the entrance to the Hawkesbury River. Riviera yachts are designed to handle the open waters that surround Australia. Their solid hand-laid fiberglass hull includes a watertight collision bulkhead forward and a vinylester outer layer. Closed-cell foam coring is used in the decks and the cabin top to reduce weight aloft. They are also rich with features and accommodations that make cruising safe, comfortable and fun.
PERFORMANCE
Riviera’s line of sporty yet rugged cruisers, the 545 SUV features all the hallmarks of the Australian builder’s SUV line, including a large cockpit and abundant amenities, all packaged into a convenient single level. The versatility of boats in the SUV line — models can be set up for serious fishing, cruising, day excursions and entertaining — makes them popular. Based on the same platform as its
A WELCOME ADDITION TO
sister model, the 525 SUV, the Riviera 545 SUV provides a cabin layout many buyers will prefer, including a full-beam master suite. In order to catch up with the 545 SUV before it landed in the U.S. for boat show season, I made the journey to the Sydney International Boat Show. Cruising under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and past the opera house is exhilarating, something
From the space-age helm back to the fully equipped galley, the main cabin is open, well lit and airy thanks to twin sun roofs. Settees face fore and aft in the cockpit, where a second joystick resides for docking. An optional sunpad turns the bow into a cozy spot for cocktails or stargazing. The master stateroom stretches across the beam and includes a settee and multiple drawers and lockers.
The Riviera 545 SUV delivers both speed and agile performance. During reciprocal runs inside Sydney Harbour with the optional twin IPS950 package — 725 hp Volvo Penta D11 diesels — the boat’s speed topped out at 33.6 knots. At a fast cruise of 28 knots at 78 percent load, the fuel burn was 55.7 gph, or 0.5 mpg, resulting in a range of 417 nautical miles (with a 10 percent reserve). Slowing to 19 knots lowered consumption to 31.7 gph and increased range to 496 n.m. These are respectable numbers, especially for a boat that is almost 58 feet long overall. Taking sharp high-speed turns underway is always a lot of fun, and the Riviera 545 SUV gently leaned into these turns with very little speed loss. It achieved clean acceleration when it returned to center. Dockside handling was uneventful on test day, as it should be, with an IPS joystick at the helm. A wing station in the cockpit allows the operator to see the port side and back to the

Twin Recaro helm seats, with the driver to center, are stylish, comfortable and provide easy access to the wheel, throttles, joystick and instruments, which include twin Garmin MFDs and a CZone fly-by-wire electrical system. My visibility was good while seated, and though the twin side mullions are thick, the position of the helm forward allowed me to see past them. The helm seats are raised on a platform that decreases standing headroom at the wheel to 6 feet, and the coach top slightly impedes vision. Operators who like to stand while driving won’t find this ideal, especially if they are tall, but a step off the helm platform reveals 6 feet, 8

inches of headroom at the salon table. I tend to stand while docking and found that by standing adjacent the helm at the top of the cabin stairs I could easily reach the joystick and enjoyed good visibility fore and aft and had plenty of headroom. There is also a wing station I would likely use.
CABIN ARRANGEMENT
Aft of the helm to port is salon seating and a flip-top table. The table must be opened to access the helm platform, which limits the use of that table underway. Overhead are twin electric sunroofs that provide light and air, and both side windows can be opened. To

drawers to port and a nice settee for reading or relaxing to starboard. The settee runs along a hull window that includes an opening porthole. Headroom is 6 feet, 4 inches at the entrance but loses as much as 3 inches with steps and ceiling changes in the cabin. Large cedar-lined hanging lockers and a well-appointed head with a shower that includes a bench and a convenient shelf are forward to port. The full-beam master is an attractive highlight of the boat. It differentiates this model from much of the competition and will please owners looking for a large, comfortable cabin to enjoy.
D E TA I L S starboard is a long settee that converts to a table. The bottom section pulls out to become an ottoman or a backless chair that can be pulled over to the table on the other side. The aft cushion then lifts, and a small wood table flips out. I really like this setup, because it provides a lot of functionality and the table can be used for entertainment or light dining, or as a computer table. Aft in the salon is a well-appointed galley. Here, Riviera uses drawers extensively both inside the galley and across the aisle to starboard where a wide serving counter hovers above. The drawers can be configured in different ways, which typically include refrigerators, freezers and a dishwasher. A deep stainless sink, a two-burner Kenyon electric cooktop, a microwave/convection oven, plenty of storage and windows that open aft into the cockpit round out the accoutrements. The galley location is conveniently adjacent to both the cockpit aft and the salon forward.
TAKE IT OUTSIDE
A stainless and tinted glass slider leads to the cockpit a few steps down, which has aft-facing seating and a folding teak table with stainless cup- and bottle holders in
the center. A top-loading freezer is between the seating and the galley. Another seat faces forward from the transom, next to an optional windowed livewell. To starboard a flip-top counter reveals twin electric barbecue grills and a sink; an ice-maker is below. Twin wide stainless gates lead to a swim platform that can be set up as a dinghy lift and has a freshwater shower, a swim ladder and yacht rails. Sidedecks, well protected by stainless grabrails and stanchions, lead forward to a large sunpad complete with drink holders. Bow lockers provide storage and access to controls and washdowns for the Muir windlass.
ACCOMMODATIONS
I made my way below to the sleeping quarters. To port is a twin-bunk cabin and forward is a VIP with a queen berth, cedarlined hanging lockers and direct access to a head that also opens to the corridor. This cabin door conveniently recesses into the wall for better access. Aft, near the entrance to the master stateroom, is a laundry station that conceals a full-sized washer and dryer. Stretching across the full beam, the master stateroom features plenty of

our Meridian 381 Easy Goin’, Arlene and I cruising the Pacific Northwest waters between the southern reaches of Puget Sound in Washington state and the northern tip of Vancouver Island. We averaged 100 days aboard annually, and our many days on the water provided us with many memories. The 2019 cruising season was a little different. We were unable to spend as much time on board as we would have liked, thanks to family obligations, visits from out-of-town friends and a handful of medical issues. But our memories made us eager to return. We found ourselves, from time to time, revisiting our past experiences and adventures. An endless procession of “Do you remember when…” sessions kept us going all summer. Then we received an email from Mike Werling, Sea’s managing editor, asking if I would be interested in writing a cruising feature. His instructions were to write 25 to 30 of the places — marinas, anchorages, towns, etc. — we had visited in the last two or three years on individual pieces of paper, put them in a hat, mix them up, draw five out and write a vignette about each of the locations. I told him, “No problem.” Little did he know that Arlene and I had unknowingly been drafting an outline of the article in our memory all summer long. It didn’t take long to identify 30 locations. The resulting luck of the draw — pulled from my favorite Sullivan Bay, B.C., baseball cap — gave me the five locations. Then it was my turn to record the five experiences.

Russell Island
A 32-acre Gulf Island National Park, only accessible by boat or kayak, Russell Island is seven miles north of the U.S-Canadian boundary in the mouth of Fulford Harbour, on the southern end of Saltspring Island. Anchorage is only possible at the island’s western side, and though it is exposed to the Fulford Harbour Ferry’s wash and northerly winds, it provides good holding and protection from the predominant southerlies. What visitors will discover ashore are a beautiful shell midden, Pacific Madrone trees with ruby-red trunks, towering Douglas firs, and the remnants of previous inhabitants. Prior to the late 1800s, First Nations people used the island to fish and
farm clams. By moving large stones down to form a retaining wall at the low-tide line, they created productive clam beds that are still evident today. The Hul’q’umi’num’ people call the island tth’umuqwa’, which refers to the kelp greenling, a colorful fish commonly found in the area near kelp forests and rock reefs. A walk of the island’s 0.8-mile-long loop trail, dotted with informational signs, reveals culturally modified trees, identifiable by scars from bark removal that occurred many years ago. I find it easy to imagine what life was like on the island in previous centuries. One of our — OK, maybe my — fondest memories of the island goes back to our first visit many years ago. We were alone on the island; I was on the beach in front of the homestead when I heard Arlene scream. I hurried up to the homestead to find her standing on the back porch. She was screaming, “Snakes, snakes. They are everywhere in the grass!” “They probably have a nest under the porch and are coming out to warm up in the sun,” I started to say, and she jumped off the porch and high stepped it back to the dinghy before I could finish. You may have guessed, Arlene is deathly afraid of snakes, even harmless garter snakes. To this day she refers to the island as Snake Island. In the quiet of the summer evening, and after Arlene’s heart rate returned to normal, we sat on deck and absorbed the spectacular sunset.
Hadlock
One of our favorite things to do during any visit to Hadlock, Wash., is enjoy dinner at the Ajax Café. A local favorite since 1977, the café — open Tuesday through Sunday with entertainment on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening (reservations recommended) — is located on the waterfront in the historic district of (lower) Port Hadlock and offers one of the most interesting dining venues in all of Puget Sound. At first glance, one would never suspect a fabulous restaurant is part of a cluster of aged bungalows and clapboard warehouses left over from Port Hadlock’s glory days. Since the café is located just steps from the public dock at Irondale, in the northwest corner of Port Hadlock, cruisers can tie up at the dock or anchor out and arrive by dinghy. Boaters can stay at the dock up to four hours while they dine at Ajax Café. Menu selections are prepared using local ingredients to create memorable cuisine at a reasonable price. The culinary talents of Chef Graham and his team create an array of tasty selections, which include seafood, beef, poultry, fruits and vegetables, homemade bread and desserts. A step inside the 130-year-old yellow and green false-front structure — once home to the town’s founder, Samuel Hadlock — results in a warm reception. Visitors can’t help but notice all the hats hanging on the walls near the entrance. Patrons are informed, by the enthusiastic receptionist, that wearing a hat during dinner is customary in the restaurant,

One of the traditions at Port Hadlock’s Ajax Café is that diners wear hats while they eat. Arlene found one she likes.

and she encourages everyone to select a hat. The dining room is filled with brightly colored chairs and tables of varying colors and styles. Photographs of famous musicians and movie stars hang on the walls. The utensils, glassware and dishes don’t match, which creates a unique décor. Draft beer is served in a wide-mouth Mason jar and margaritas arrive in a 16-ounce Coke glass from the 1960s. The menu pages are housed in old vinyl album jackets, which stimulates conversation. The atmosphere is one big party. Who would have thought something as simple as hats could break the ice among strangers and even melt some folks’ shyness. Before long diners are visiting with others seated around them, all making for a great combination of excellent food, casual atmosphere and great fun.

Gig Harbor
Anyone not looking for it might miss Gig Harbor’s narrow entrance, guarded as it is by a sand spit to starboard. But to miss the comfort of the harbor’s protection would be a misfortune. Seven miles west of Tacoma and centrally located between Seattle and Olympia is Washington’s pleasant and historical Gig Harbor. In 1841, two ships from the U.S. Exploring Expedition commanded by Capt. Charles Wilkes found the elusive entrance and took full advantage of its protection. Crewmembers surveying the area in the captain’s “gig” stuck the name in their journal. Capt. Wilkes then transferred their notes and named the bay Gig Harbor. Arlene and I have visited Gig Harbor many times over the years. One of our favorite times to visit is the first weekend in June, because the community of about 8,000 people comes together for its annual Maritime Gig Festival, which celebrates the town’s maritime heritage with a parade, live entertainment, food, classic cars, a wooden yacht display and a sailboat regatta in the harbor. The celebration concludes on Sunday afternoon with a blessing of the commercial fishing fleet. In the morning, local fishing vessels anchor and raft-up off the Jerisich Park dock with crew and family members, and they host barbecues and even live bands aboard. At noon, the bells from the church up the hill ring out and a procession to the dock begins. The first to appear is the children’s choir, its members singing hymns. They are closely followed by the
26 SEAMAGAZINE.COM NOVEMBER 2019

Knights of Columbus and the parish priest. Once everyone is on the dock, community leaders say a few words and the priest has his turn, finishing with a prayer/blessing. He then steps aboard a small runabout, motors out to the fleet, places a wreath of flowers in the harbor for fishermen who did not return from sea, and begins to sprinkle holy water on each boat in the fleet. Once the blessing is completed, he continues around the harbor and blesses each of the pleasureboats — anything and everything that floats, really. The holy water is flying everywhere. After that, it’s party time aboard the fishing boats; the barbecues are lit and the bands begin to perform.
During Gig Harbor’s Maritime Gig Festival, the parish priest blesses the fishing fleet as part of the festivities. After that, he blesses darn near everything that floats, including dinghies and tenders.

Princess Louisa Inlet
Because of its beauty, British Columbia’s Princess Louisa Inlet is referred to by some boaters as the eighth wonder of the world. Until mid-June, melting snow high above feeds streams that create more than 60 waterfalls down its sheer rock faces. At the head of the inlet is the crown jewel: Chatterbox Falls, which drops 120 feet into the inlet. Boats enter the inlet through Malibu Rapids, which is one-third of a nautical mile in length. The reversing saltwater rapids protect the inlet with currents up to 9 knots on spring tides. Most vessels should enter Malibu Rapids at or very near slack water, because the currents are strong. We enjoy the slow cruise up the 3.7-mile-long, half-mile-wide inlet, taking in all the beauty it has to offer. On every visit we are awestruck, and it never gets old. The mountains tower at elevations of 5,000 to 8,000 feet, while the 660-foot-deep emerald green water passes under the keel. There is a tranquility that stretches from the mirror-like surface straight up into infinity. The deep silence is only disturbed by the muffled roar of waterfalls as they plunge over sheer granite cliffs. We must remind ourselves we’re in a saltwater fjord, as it seems more like Yosemite National Park. On one of our visits, we followed a trail through a forest filled with trees that dripped with hanging moss, to the base of Chatter Box Falls. We wanted to get a real appreciation of its beauty. On our walk back we discovered ripe wild mountain blueberries along the trail. Not wanting to squander an opportunity, we picked a few, figuring they would add some sweetness to our morning pancakes. They were as sweet as anticipated, and the following day we returned for a few more. The day was warm by Northwest standards — one might say downright hot — at 85 degrees and with not a breath of wind, so we took the dinghy across the inlet to where one of the many waterfalls enters the inlet. Melted snow falls thousands of feet over the sheer rock cliffs, tumbles into a large pool and then flows through a couple of smaller pools before it enters the inlet. We found the pools a perfect place to get a little relief from the heat. The once-icy water

warms as it spills over sun-heated rocks, which makes it comfortable. We enjoyed soaking in the pools for more than an hour before we decided to get out and return to Easy Goin’. We didn’t want to turn into prunes. Besides, it was almost happy hour. That evening we enjoyed a rare experience with our new friends aboard HONU, Barry and Irene: We had the inlet to ourselves. While that may not be so rare during the winter, we were there in the middle of June. As the sun set and cast shadows across the inlet, a nearly full moon rose above the opposite hillside. After sunset it was a stargazer’s delight, as we identified the different constellations in the cloudless evening sky.

Shallow Bay
Just south of the U.S-Canadian border, in the northern portion of the San Juan Archipelago, is Sucia Island Marine State Park, which is known as the “Crown Jewel” of Washington’s San Juan Islands. There’s something very special about the island’s beauty; its many bays, coves, beaches and forest trails inspire firsttime visitors and park veterans. Its shoreline is the product of Mother Nature’s artistry, a mix of smooth sandstone curves, rounded arches, honeycomb hollows and six bays, each of which possesses its own personality.
This cruising destination, only accessible by private vessel, receives more than 100,000 visitors each year, making it the most popular of all the San Juan Island marine state parks. Visiting boaters can spend a week at a time, every night in a different moorage. Our favorite is Shallow Bay, a west-facing bay that offers eight mooring buoys, limited anchoring, sandy beaches and some of the most spectacular sunset viewing anywhere in the San Juan Islands. Two day beacons mark a 75-foot-wide

opening in the rock reef that protects the small bay. As Shallow Bay’s name implies, it’s only 8 feet deep in its center at zero tide. The sun can warm the water enough that brave individuals can swim or wade in it. Potholes in the cliff at Shallow Bay are the product of a microclimate that results in the weathering of the rock. Small cavities grow larger because the rock inside is damp and shady, which increases the decomposition rate of minerals that affect the weathering rate of the sandstone. These particular cavities are known as China Caves, because they were used as a hiding place for Chinese workers smuggled into the country as illegal laborers in the late 1800s. A narrow isthmus separates Echo and Shallow bays, and the walk between the two is brief, so many times this is our starting point for an exploration of the island. The hiking trail system crosses the isthmus and fans out across the island.

ROCKER SWITCHES AND BUTTONS ARE BECOMING LESS COMMON, ESPECIALLY ON NEW BOATS, AS DIGITAL SWITCHING CONTINUES TO PROLIFERATE THROUGHOUT ALL SEGMENTS OF THE RECREATIONAL MARINE MARKET. BUT WHAT IS THIS BEAST, AND SHOULD WE BE THRILLED BY OR SKEPTICAL OF ITS RISE OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS? WHAT IS IT? Simply put, digital switching replaces standard mechanical contacts, fuses, wiring harnesses and bus bars with electrical impulses sent over an NMEA2000 or Ethernet backbone. With a simple interface via either a standalone display or a multifunction display (MFD), a boat owner can command and monitor systems such as lighting, climate control, wipers, stereo, security systems, bilge pumps, generator starts and more. This generally eliminates most of the switches on a dash or

in a dedicated circuit panel. Digital switching is networked control and monitoring that’s programmable —conventional circuit breakers can’t be programmed — and users can interface with it from any point on the network or via a remote tablet. “The holy grail of digital switching is simplification and integration,” said Dave Maryanov of CZone, a leading digital switching provider. “It’s an easy way to manage complexity.”

The Pros Digital switching builds in elegance and simplicity that are appreciated by boat builders and boat users, and it’s not entirely new. “The technology has been around in aviation, automotive and industrial applications for a long time,” said Raymarine’s Jim McGowan, “and it’s coming to boating.” better fuel economy. The systems are more flexible and expandable, and though there’s more initial planning for the boat builder, once a template is set, it’s easily replicated. 5 Digital switching is ideal for boats that have multiple helms. It significantly reduces wiring complexity and cost. 6 Overall system reliability increases simply by eliminating or reducing the number of mechanical switches and corrosionprone connections. 7 Digital switching systems can incorporate dozens of sensors to monitor the health of just about every aspect of the boat. Batteries, bilge pumps, tank levels and engine temperature can be monitored with sensors, which increases safety, right down to the ability to turn on courtesy lighting before you step aboard. 8 Digital switching systems are scalable, which is why these solutions are now migrating down-market into smaller and simpler boats. 9 Digital systems can be customized by boat owners, so if they want the air conditioning to come on 30 minutes before they arrive and the lights to go off 10 minutes after they leave, they can do that on a 4
Whether a boat owner uses a dedicated MFD, a tablet or a CZone display, such as this one on a Riviera 4800 Sport Yacht (top), controlling a boat’s systems is getting simpler.
32
Why is it so appealing? 1 It makes an electrical or electronic system easier to monitor and troubleshoot. Software updates and system upgrades are possible, problems are more easily diagnosed and repairs become faster in some cases. 2 Less wiring with smaller gauge wire, fewer bulky switches and shorter wire runs reduce the cost of materials and simplify installation with fewer holes drilled and connections made. Boat builders can build boats more quickly and affordably. 3 The reduction in components also makes the boat lighter. Depending on the size of the vessel, that may translate into
virtual timer. Digital switching enables dimming capability. 11 Alerts can be built into the system to highlight a circuit that isn’t working properly. For example, when you turn on a bilge pump and it isn’t working on the correct voltage, a warning can flash on the display, alerting you to a potential problem. 12 Groups of switches can be combined into programmable modes activated by a single touch. If you’re going fishing early in the morning, you can program a Fishing mode that turns on the baitwell pumps and running lights and starts the A/C. If you’re heading to the river on a pontoon boat, Beach mode can turn on the lights and stereo, cool down the refrigerator and even deploy an electrically activated swim ladder. 13 Fewer switches have led to cleaner helm consoles and cleared room for larger MFDs on the dash. 14 Garmin, Raymarine, Furuno, Simrad, Lowrance and MFDs from other brands can turn into touchscreen switching interfaces. You know what’s going on with aspects of the boat right from the helm. 15 Key virtual buttons can appear on multiple screens, so you don’t have to hunt for them in the menus. Icons and animation make the interface more user friendly and personalized. 10

You can now see how far down your hydraulic swim platform is as it lowers. 16 System control can be taken off the boat via a Wi-Fi or cellular connection on a tablet or phone. So if you forgot to activate the security system when you left the marina, just do it from home. 17 In case of catastrophic failure, critical systems retain a mechanical override, so running lights, bilge pumps and genset starts are still operable. “Redundancy is built in,”
McGowan said. 18 Digital switching reflects the way we live today. Our cars have had digital switching for years, and smart homes that can turn on lights, the A/C, alarms, entertainment and more are based on similar technology and are more prevalent. The change is being driven by expectations. We want boats to be similarly equipped with apps and interfaces that we already use and recognize.
The Cons Nothing is perfect, so there are a few drawbacks, most of which are relatively low hurdles. 1 Due to the high level of integration and interconnectedness, a failure in the backbone can take the whole boat system down. However, see point 17 above: critical systems remain hardwired, so you can still get home. 2 If the entire system is connected to one display and that MFD goes down, the interface may be gone (or you may be able to retain control via a tablet). 3 If you have a dead ship with nothing left in the batteries, you won’t have a system interface and will need to turn on the genset at the device, unless it has a dedicated start battery. 4 Integration challenges remain, because not all devices are “smart” and they don’t have the same capability to become a part
of a digital switching solution. 5 Menu-driven interfaces can be intimidating and it’s easier just to reach for a nav light switch than to learn a new system. Old salts have been especially distrustful of virtual switches and have a fear of the black screen. That said, most of the interface is structured into menus like on phones or tablets, so systems aren’t difficult to learn. 6 Digital switching is really a new-boat game. You can rewire an existing boat, but it will most likely require tearing out old systems and furniture. It will be costly and time-consuming; unless you’re rewiring a superyacht, it will probably not be worth it.
REACH & PLAYERS
Like a digital fuse box, a digital-switching equipped MFD, such as this one from Garmin, allows the captain to control lights, pumps, larger systems and more. A hub such as an EmpirBus Connect 50 makes it all possible.
FEWER SWITCHES HAVE LED TO CLEANER HELM CONSOLES AND CLEARED ROOM FOR LARGER MFDS ON THE DASH.
The basics of digital switching functionality on boats have been around for about 10 years. What’s changing is the reach of the technology into various segments of the market. Once the domain of superyachts, digital switching has shot down-market into owner-operated cruising yachts, sailboats, center console fishing boats, towboats and even pontoon boats. “We expect that within five years, 80 percent of boat builders will offer digital switching,” said Garmin’s Dave Dunne. “In 10 years, it’ll likely be 100 percent of builders.” Boat builders such as Jeanneau, Prestige, Sea Ray, Scout, MasterCraft, Ranger and Boston Whaler all offer their models with some level of digital switching. Some manufacturers charge a premium for this whiz-bang technology that early adopters love. Some folks just live for the sleek Tesla-like dash interface. Other manufacturers just make digital switching mandatory, since they don’t build the old-fashioned way with switches anymore, and that’s likely to be the wave of the future. Another facet that has changed besides market proliferation is the service network to support these systems. More electronics dealers are becoming certified to diagnose and troubleshoot digital networks, so the fear of being stuck without support is decreasing. Basically, all market segments, regardless of how small or simple the boat, are expected to offer digital switching soon. A variable that offers room for improvement within the technology is the user interface, as icons get better and menus become more friendly and reflective of the real world. “You can get a visual representation of critical fluid levels, battery health and even how far out your SureShade awning is,” said Ely Bates of Navico, which purchased superyacht switching provider Naviop and is trickling it

ALL MARKET SEGMENTS, REGARDLESS OF HOW SMALL OR SIMPLE THE BOAT, ARE EXPECTED TO OFFER DIGITAL SWITCHING SOON. down-market. “It’s likely to become a cloud-based technology in the future.”
PRIMARY PROVIDERS Europe has quite a few digital switching providers, and the U.S. is behind in this respect. Here, there are a few key players, with the lion’s share going to CZone, which falls under parent company Power Products (BEP Marine). CZone was first seen on large yachts, but it has captured the business of much smaller boats now. CZone does interface with tablets but doesn’t like to put the system on smartphones due to the small size of the screen. “We don’t want someone to accidentally deploy their anchor rather than turn on their nav lights when they’re underway,” Maryanov said. Speaking of the smaller end of the market, before

you think digital switching is complex technology that has no place on a small vessel, know that PowerPlex is working with multiple bass boat models. Lake fishing is about to go really high tech. Swedish company EmpirBus was first distributed by Raymarine but is now a part of Garmin. Another manufacturer is SeaStar Solutions, which seems to target smaller vessels, and Simrad runs off Naviop, the Italian brand that was purchased by Navico, parent company of Simrad, B&G and Lowrance.
ONE-BUTTON WONDER Whether you love it or feel trepidation toward new technology, digital switching isn’t just coming, it’s here. Chances are any new boat you inspect at a boat show or dealership will have some form of it, because boats, like cars and homes, are growing more complicated, integrated and connected. “Boats today are simply being asked to do more in the same real estate, and digital switching helps with installation in tight spaces as well as on the dash,” Maryanov said. “And boaters are willing to pay a premium for the elegance and the simplicity. They love the one-button wonder.”

ASK A BROKER
BROKERAGE ADVICE
NOVEMBER’S QUESTION: I’m intimidated just thinking about all the paperwork involved in a boat sales transaction. How versed are brokers in general and specifically? THE CARDINAL RULE is to get it in writing. Your broker will outline the terms of the sale in writing to protect your interests. That includes spelling out obligations that you and the seller have agreed to, and when these obligations will be fulfilled. It’s a legally binding contract of each party’s intentions. Your sales agreement and contract should contain a description of the boat and engine (if it’s outboard powered), including the make, model, year, Hull Identification Number and (outboard) engine serial numbers. You can get the equipment list from the survey and the written specification sheet from your broker. This should include: 1. The purchase price, including any deposits you have paid and how you will pay the balance — by cashier’s check, for example 2. Details about when and where the boat will be delivered and the sale finalized
3. Language specifying that the sale depends on a satisfactory survey and sea trial and your ability to get acceptable financing and marine insurance 4. A statement confirming the boat is free of liens and encumbrances that might block the sale; the seller should also take responsibility for debts incurred during the seller’s ownership This answer comes from “Buying a Used Boat,” a booklet offered by the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways (dbw.parks. ca.gov/?page_id=28974). BOILERPLATE FORMS COVER every
aspect of the transaction, but where the yacht sales professional really shines is in the additional provisions section. Here’s where she helps the provision clearly state that when the boat is launched/ hauled out for survey, the buyer will pay for the launch/haulout. And if the boat is rejected, the seller pays to have it put back on land. These points, and potentially many others, need to be clarified based on the boat’s condition. Various liens and encumbrances can be placed on vessels, yet such impediments to a clear title might not be discovered until the end of the sales process. A yacht sales professional works diligently to make sure the buyer gets a clear title, so he can get the
boat registered or documented. This answer comes from a feature in our August 2017 issue called “Learn the ABCs of Yacht Brokerages,” written by Doug Thompson. THE AMOUNT OF paperwork in a vessel transaction can be mindboggling, and competence with contracts and documentation is key. Jody McCormack, a San Francisco-based maritime attorney, noted that sometimes brokers are carried away by the enthusiasm to sell and they can get in too deep. “Brokers need a solid understanding of their contracts and be mindful of the limits of those forms,” she said. “Sometimes the transaction calls for specialized knowledge, because there are specific variables.” Brokers need to know when to consider custom agreements. Are they dealing with a sophisticated racing yacht that may have survey contingencies? What’s the dollar value of the asset? Will the vessel be flagged offshore, and what about taxation issues? “Precedents go back a long way in this industry and they may not be intuitive,” she said, “so brokers need to have a willingness to go beyond the standard forms.” This answer comes from a feature in our August 2018 issue called “8 Qualities of a Yacht Sales Professional,” written by Zuzana Prochazka.

Modern marina amenities and old-town charisma give Edmonds a then-and-now charm. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP
PORT OF EDMONDS MARINA IS centrally located between Seattle’s Elliott Bay to the south and Everett to the north, and from the marina, the view to the west across Puget Sound of the Kitsap Peninsula and Olympic Mountains is spectacular. The well-maintained marina is the centerpiece of the city’s waterfront. Founded in 1889 by logger George Brackett after his canoe was pushed ashore by blustery winds, Edmonds is the oldest incorporated city in Snohomish County. Despite its growth, the picturesque seaside community hasn’t lost sight of what makes it unique, and
Edmonds residents are among the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.
MARINA & MORE The entrance to the marina is wide and located in the center of the breakwater. Dredged to a depth of 13 feet at a zero tide, the marina has more than 660 permanent moorage slips, 200 dry storage spaces for smaller vessels and a public sling launch. In addition, 500 feet of guest side-tie moorage is available on a first-come, first served basis on I, J and L docks in the center of the marina, east of the fuel dock. Rafting is allowed and encouraged in unreserved areas. The port monitors VHF Channel SEAMAGAZINE.COM NOVEMBER 2019

a short walk away, though the port does offer a shuttle ride into town for shopping, dining and entertainment. In addition to its facilities and hospitality, Port of Edmonds offers amenities that make it a great urban boating destination. Within the marina area are restaurants and coffee shops to enjoy. Anthony’s Home Port overlooks the guest moorage and offers lunch and dinner daily and brunch on Sundays. At the north end of the marina is Arnies, which offers a good selection of seafood for lunch and dinner. Both restaurants provide scenic views of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains and the magnificent sunset.
GOING TO THE PARK The Edmonds waterfront has a collection of beaches and parks, including Off Leash Area Edmonds, an area where dogs can run free. Boaters with a dog aboard will likely take Fido to the park regularly. Wildlife viewing and bird-watching beckon in the Edmonds Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary and trails. A half-mile-long promenade along the marina makes it easy to stroll between the beaches at either end

of the facility. Marina Beach Park to the south has a picnic area and a playground for the kids. A public fishing pier and Brackett’s Landing are on the north side of the breakwater, where visitors relax, sit on driftwood logs and take in the view or explore the beach at low tide. North of the ferry landing is the 27-acre Edmonds Underwater Park, Washington’s most popular scuba diving location. The park features a series of artificial reefs with developed underwater trails for divers to explore the nutrient-rich water and abundance of sea life.
Enjoy some of Edmonds’ bird life at Edmonds Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary. Downtown Edmonds provides a relaxing environment with plenty of restaurants and shops.
Fans of the Northwest craft brewing scene will be happy to know American Brewing Co. and Salish Sea Brewing Co. both call Edmonds home. Gin fans should know Edmonds is also the home of Scratch Distillery, where visitors can sample small batch liquors.
HEADED FOR TOWN Downtown Edmonds is a historical town with plenty of charm. It’s walkable and easily accessible from the marina on foot or via the marina courtesy van. The visitor information center is in the middle of town and is housed in the well-preserved historical Ganahl-Hanley Cabin, which provides a taste of pioneer life. A rich blend of old and new makes this town distinctive. Accented by attractive art, outdoor murals, colorful hanging baskets and vintage street lamps, the pedestrian-friendly downtown district EdmondsWA.com reflects the past and is a browser’s paraPortofEdmonds.org dise: art galleries and boutiques; specialty shops that feature books, travel accessories, garden supplies, and candy; and picture-perfect sidewalk cafés. If the latest movie release is of interest, the historic and independently owned Edmonds Theater, built in 1929, showcases old-school character with a single screen, 252 seats and classic balcony seating.
Plan a Visit
GRAB A BITE & BREW Take a break from shopping at one of several cafés and restaurants or savor handcrafted beverages at a local brewery or distillery. The wonderful selection of restaurants, cafés and bistros offer a variety of delicious dining experiences. Demetri’s Woodstone Taverna or Epulo Bistro will satisfy any Mediterranean palate. Other fine choices are Salt and Iron, Chanterelle and Clair’s. There’s no shortage of fine cafés, such as the Rusty Pelican, Waterfront Coffee Co. and Red Twig Café and Bakery, and Canarino Gelato Caffe (to name a few). Local nightlife includes The Church Key Pub, Roy’s of Edmonds, Engels Pub, and A Very Taki Tiki Bar & Grill.
A LITTLE HISTORY History buffs can find a bit of a thrill in Edmonds: the Edmonds Historic Sites Walking Tour. A brochure, available at the visitor’s center, contains a succinct overview of the area’s past and a map to 27 separate sites in a roughly 1-square-mile section of the city’s historic center. Visitors will see one of the oldest standing houses in Edmonds, built in 1888, and the 1890-built Odd Fellows Hall, which has been the scene of political rallies and community meetings, and was the site of the first motion picture shown in Edmonds. Along the way are exquisitely detailed examples of Queen Anne architecture, fashionable at the turn of the 20th century, and examples of the art deco movement, such as the 1923 Princess Theater, built as a Vaudeville house and today serving as Edmonds Theater, the city’s art film house. On the map, each of the 27 sites gets a brief description of the structure’s history.

CLEAN AND WRINKLE-FREE
Boaters need to learn marina laundry-room etiquette. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP
POLL A THOUSAND CRUISING BOATERS or liveaboards about their favorite activities and I’m willing to bet nobody would include “doing laundry.” Marina laundry facilities are often crowed, especially during the peak cruising season. Lines are common, and each person usually has multiple loads to do, so it’s no surprise that people can get a little touchy slogging through the ritual.
PRIOR TO ARRIVING Find out ahead of time whether the facility requires coins, tokens, cards or something else, and get them before you put clothes and soap in the washing machine. In addition, please — please, please — sort the laundry on board before heading to the laundry facility. Most marina laundry rooms are relatively small, and no one wants to see or step over someone else’s dirty laundry scattered all over the place as he sorts it. A laundry bag is useful. It can be used to carry dirty clothes to the laundry, washed as part of the laundry, and then used to carry clean clothes back to the boat. One can save a boater from leaving a trail of unmentionables down the dock.
GENERAL
Even boat owners who have a washing machine on the boat likely need to visit a laundry facility at least a couple times during an extended cruise, to wash larger items such as sheets or blankets. During our years of boating, we have witnessed some really ugly and unusual situations, but marina laundry rooms aren’t all bad. They’re a good place to meet and socialize with other cruisers, and many laundry facilities have book exchanges.
Laundry room etiquette is really just a matter of respecting other people’s time and laundry. Most of what I’m going to share will seem like common sense, or maybe common courtesy. Yet, many boaters — they know who they are — break all of these rules every time they poke their head into a marina laundry room. The unwritten etiquette isn’t that difficult and can be summed up simply: Do unto others…
The general rule is “first come, first served,” as long as you’re there. Don’t leave and expect others to wait for your return if a washer becomes available. The exception to this rule is a signup board, which establishes order of use. When you arrive, pay attention to who is already there and waiting. Know your place in the line. If seating is limited and a bunch of people are waiting, don’t put laundry bags in the chair. One way to get in others’ bad graces is to place dirty clothes on a clean folding table. People use these tables to fold clean clothes. Avoid receiving the stink-eye from fellow boaters by simply putting your clothes down in front of the washer that you are going to use. Don’t sit on the folding areas and don’t put your feet on them either! People who leave their clothes unattended cause the biggest problems and delays. I’m not saying you can’t put clothes in the wash and come back to dry them; no one has a problem with that. But if you do leave, be back in time to remove them before the cycle ends. If you’re not back when the clothes are done, expect that the next person in line will remove them in order to use the machine. If you don’t want someone else touching your items, either stay in the laundry room or set an alarm — use a watch or a phone — so you’ll be back in time. No one wants to spend all

day doing laundry! Is it OK to remove someone’s clothing from a washer or dryer? Yes. However, if you decide to take matters in your own hands, keep in mind that for every action there is a reaction. We’ve seen this scenario play out and many times it ends badly. Before you remove someone’s laundry, do a quick check to make sure he isn’t sitting right outside the laundry room. Once you’ve removed a load from a washer or dryer and are done with the machine, leave the lid or door open. This is the universal sign that the machine is available. Conversely, if a machine doesn’t work, put a sign on it so further people won’t waste their time and money, and be sure to inform the marina office, so it can be fixed. Keep children under control. A laundry facility is a boring place for a child, and a bored kid can get a little crazy. Make sure
children bring something to keep themselves entertained.
WASHING MACHINE Use only the recommended amount of detergent and bleach. Many machines are high-efficiency kind, and using too much soap will cause suds to overflow and go all over the floor. Most washing machines have a label with directions under the lid. Following the recommendations results in cleaner clothes without overloading the

machine or leaving any excess bleach behind. The next person to use the machine will appreciate it. Don’t stash-and-dash. This is the act of throwing laundry in the wash, starting the machine, and then leaving. Doing so can cause unnecessary floods. What happens is something such as a bra strap or a shoelace gets caught in the door and goes unnoticed until someone detects the sound of water splashing on the floor. If you wait until the washer has filled up and begun to wash before you leave, which takes only a few minutes, this messy situation can be avoided altogether. Don’t use fabric dye in washers. The next people probably don’t want residual dye in their clothing and don’t want to wait for you to run an empty load or two to get it out.
DRYER Wait until the wash cycle is over before

claiming a dryer. When the facility is full, all in attendance need to wait their turn. Reserving a dryer when your clothes are still in the wash confuses the queue. Throw dryer sheets away when you’re done with them. There is no reason to leave them on the floor or in the dryer for someone else to clean up. These things are like banana peels on the floor; someone
could get really hurt because you didn’t feel the need to clean up. Do not grab your clothing one item at a time and fold them right out of the dryer. This is what the table is for. When the time is up, remove the clothing and head to the folding table, or take them back to the boat and fold them, but do not fold clothes directly out of the dryer.

BOAT SALES DATA MIXED
DATA COMPILED BY Washington Sea
Grant show that boat sales in Washington had mixed results in the second quarter of 2019. Unit sales of new boats by dealers were up by 1 percent, but the dollar value was down 9.6 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Buyers snagged 20 new boats with a purchase price of more than $500,000 and six that cost more than $1 million, which were better numbers than in 2018, but the dollar value was down 22.7 percent. Among the best performers were sterndrive-powered boats, sales of which jumped by 37.6 percent over 2018. Visit wsg. washington.edu and search for Washington boat sales reports to find out more.
SEATTLE YACHTS PURCHASES NORTHERN MARINE
CONTINUING ITS TREND toward
expansion, Seattle Yachts announced it purchased Washington-based Northern Marine. In addition to the brand itself, the purchase includes a shipyard in Anacortes, tooling and intellectual property. Northern Marine’s offerings include yachts from 57 feet to 100 feet, and it has been building boats since 1995. “As part of the acquisition we will also have complete tooling for the 57, 64, and much of the 80,” said Seattle Yachts managing partner Peter Whiting. “Seattle Yachts has grown exponentially in the last 18 months and we are excited for what the future holds.” In August, Seattle Yachts was appointed the Hampton Yachts dealer for the U.S. East Coast, from Florida through Maine. SWIFT BOAT PCF-816 STARTED SERVING as an ambassador at the Maritime Museum of San Diego five years ago, after a multiyear restoration that got it into shape to host tours. Since then it has taken groups of people on 90-minute tours of San Diego Bay and the military installations therein. Volunteers readied it for service and have kept it that way. In anticipation of Veterans Day this year, we asked the Maritime Museum to give us some perspective regarding PCF-816. Our requested perspective was delivered by Kevin Sheehan, Ph.D, who is the manager of collections, librarian and editor for the San Diego Maritime Museum. Via email, Sheehan told us about the Swift Boat program and how visitors can experience a piece of history firsthand aboard PCF-816. Sea: How did the Maritime Museum acquire Swift Boat PCF-816? Sheehan: It was donated to the Maritime Museum by the Maltese government’s Ministry of Defense. In 1971, the U.S. Navy donated two Swift Boats to the Republic of Malta for use in its Maritime Squadron. The boats served there patrolling the Mediterranean Sea around the Island of Malta. The Swift Boats’ mission was to help defend the island, and their crews also performed customs duties as well as rescues. In the course of their service, a number of Maltese sailors lost their lives. After 40 years of service, they were retired. In 2011 one Swift Boat was officially donated to the Maritime Museum of San Diego, with the assistance of the U.S. Navy

and the active help of many Swift Boat veterans. The museum promised to both preserve the boat’s history and pay tribute to all Swift Boat sailors in both countries. It returned to San Diego in 2012 after being transported across the Western Mediterranean and Atlantic by ship, and then trucked across the United States. The project was assisted by donations from Swift Boat veterans, and received the active support of the Swift Boat Sailors Association, and many veterans worked in the actual restoration of the vessel.
PCF-816 shows tourists some of the sights around San Diego Bay, including Navy ships that are in harbor on any given day.

The 90-minute cruise takes museum visitors on a tour into the South Bay with a detailed commentary on the history of Swift Boats and San Diego’s connections with the U.S. Navy. Visitors get a close-up view of some of the Navy’s maintenance and shore facilities as well as any vessels that are in the vicinity. As part of the tour experience, the captain takes PCF-816 to full speed and gives participants an idea of just how fast Swift Boats can go.
Where did it serve during its life as an active Naval vessel? Prior to serving with the Maritime Squadron of the Armed Forces of Malta, PCF-816 was based in San Diego. In fact it never served in Vietnam, but rather it was used to train crews for service in the Vietnam War. Given the large number of Swift Boat sailors who trained in San Diego, it can be assumed that many of them were instructed on board PCF-816. How long did it take to refurbish the boat? The boat was refurbished in a series of stages, involving months of internal and external maintenance. I don’t have a precise timeline for this, but I can tell you that PCF-816 continues to receive loving care from our veterans. In what ways have volunteers helped outside of the restoration? Volunteers assist as docents, and also for maintenance. Swift Boat veterans have taken PCF-816 on a goodwill tour to ports north of here, including Oxnard, Los Angeles and Newport Harbor. The Swift Boat has been exhibited as a kind of extension of the Maritime Museum in these ports and has welcomed hundreds of visitors. What are the highlights of the bay tour?
CA-4
The captain takes PCF-816 to full speed and gives participants an idea of just how fast Swift Boats can go. Available in the San Diego Maritime Museum gift shop, “Swift Boats at War in Vietnam” recounts stories from the soldiers who risked their lives patrolling the Vietnam coast and the Mekong Delta in Swift Boats.
Have any Swift Boat veterans taken the tour and added to its story? The museum hosts veterans and veteran organizations regularly, and many visiting Swift Boat sailors have traveled on PCF-816. Their memories have been collected and published by the Maritime Museum. The museum has also played host to annual reunions and developed specific exhibits related to riverine warfare in Vietnam with the close assistance of Swift Boat veterans and their families. Is there anything people should know about the experience before stepping aboard for the tour? The tour and the museum’s related exhibit is meant to honor the service of all Swift Boat sailors, and particularly to act as a living memorial of those who died in the service of their country and are considered to be “still on patrol.”

SS JEREMIAH O’BRIEN IS ONE of four surviving Liberty class ships, which were so named because Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt said they would bring liberty to Europe. Jeremiah O’Brien supported the D-Day invasion of France, and during World War II she called at ports in Chile, Peru, New Guinea, the Philippines, India, China and Australia. Today, she is moored at Pier 45, Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco and is a tourist attraction.

NAME THE BOAT
THIS MONTH:
READER CONTEST
A year later, Blankety-Blank Point Lighthouse was erected, and subsequent groups of arrivals had to endure tales of how hard the original pilgrims had it. A generational tradition that continues to this day. Send us your best name for our boat. If it wins, your name and chosen moniker will appear in the January 2020 issue of Sea, and you’ll win one pair of Costa sunglasses, valued at up to $279.
YOURS FREE! COSTA SUNGLASSES Whether you choose the Rafael style with a matte olive teak frame and green mirror lenses (pictured) or one of Costa’s many other styles (costadelmar.com), you’ll have your choice of frame width, frame type and lens color, to create a pair of sunglasses that’s all you.
HOW TO PLAY: The first person to submit the best boat name
will win one pair of Costa sunglasses, valued at up to $279. Submissions are due by November 15. Send an email to editorial@ seamag.com with “Na me the Boat” in the subject line, or send snail mail to Sea Magazine/Name the Boat, 18475 Bandilier Circle, Fountain Valley, CA 92708. Please include your full name, address and phone number, along with your boat name.
Duncan McIntosh Co. and Costa employees and their families are prohibited from entering. Prizewinners are responsible for any applicable taxes. Decisions of the judges and the editor are final.
