BEYOND THE WAKE LEAD BOAT AVIARA AV32 A new boat brand focuses on daycruising luxury with a dash of speed.

A FULL DAY ON THE WATER is always better on a boat that boasts features such as three coolers, a wet bar with a sink, a Klipsch stereo system, a color-matched fiberglass hardtop, seating for a gaggle of guests, an electric-flush head and more. Such accoutrements are all included on the new Aviara AV32, a luxury dayboat from … MasterCraft? That’s right, the builder known for its wake- and ski boats has a new brand, and its mission is decidedly less action-oriented than MasterCraft models, though the AV32 does top 50 mph. The power for that speed is made possible by four engine options. On the outboard side, twin Mercury Verado 300 or 350 hp outboards are available, while folks who prefer sterndrives can choose twin 380 hp Ilmor MV8 6.0L MPI engines or twin 430 hp Ilmor MV8 6.2L GDI engines. Joysticks come standard no matter the engines chosen. And the captain is going to enjoy operating the vessel from a helm
that includes three screens — 12-inch Garmin MFD, 10.1-inch boat control and stereo display, 7-inch engine display — an Italian steering wheel, a joystick and a doublewide bolstered seat. It’s technology- and style-forward. With a yacht certification, the AV32 has no official passenger cap, but good sense should dictate there be one. A dozen people can easily find a seat, either on the transom bench, the cockpit L-settee, the helm seat or the wraparound bow settee, but as many as 14 or 15 folks could be seated with a bit of coziness. The hardtop throws shade on a few folks, and an optional sun-shade system extends the shade all the way to the swim platform. LOA varies from 32 feet, 6 inches (sterndrive) to 34 feet, 4 inches (outboard), but the beam stays at 10 feet, 4 inches no matter the propulsion. Aviara, aviaraboats.com

LEAD A CAT TO WATER Catamaran owners need to take beam and windage into account if they want a stress-free day to, from and on the water.
I HAD TOWED ALL manner of single-hull boats across the country, back and forth, before I hitched up to my first catamaran. Towing a cat on the road was as much a new experience as running my first cat on the water. I’ve been waiting to say this: They’re a different breed of cat. The popularity of catamaran center consoles in towable sizes means many readers already have one or are thinking about getting one. Either
4
way, cat owners should take it slow when trailering until they get the knack. Catamaran owners face two basic trailering issues: width and windage.
WIDTH One of the benefits of cats is they are wider than boats of similar size, but that’s where owners run into width restrictions on the road.
Permits Every state sets its maximum trailerable width limit at 8 feet, 6 inches, with the exception of New York, Tennessee, Texas, New Jersey and some Arizona roads, which are at 8 feet. Wider than that, trailer haulers need a permit, and some popular cats have oversized beams: Twin Vee 240 (8 feet, 8 inches), Glacier Bay 2665 (8 feet, 9 inches), Aspen L90 LX (10 feet) and ArrowCat 320 (10 feet).
Yes, a lot of skippers forgo a permit, thinking they’re only towing a few miles to their favorite ramp. All well and good, except if they have an accident and someone is hurt, the lawyers will go after them if they didn’t have a permit. In addition, their insurance company may not want to cover them if they were doing something illegal, so a permit is cheap and easy insurance. I estimate I have more than 10,000 miles of towing on the
SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2020
+ Sea WCF new3.indd 4

road and have encountered countless police cars, and I’ve never been bothered. But I always have a permit and I’m going to continue getting them. Permit dodgers not only get a citation and fine, of course, but also have to park by the roadside until they do get a permit, which can wreck a weekend adventure. An annual permit in California is about $90, in Oregon it’s a steal at $20 (with some restrictions) and Florida offers an annual permit for up to 12 feet wide for $20. Some states may require an “Oversize Load” sign across the transom (about $20 on eBay). I like Mercury Permits (mercurypermits.net), which also helps program one’s route to avoid construction, road closures, etc. Owners planning a multistate adventure need a permit for every state they pass through.
Driving The problem of width also means the tow vehicle needs improved rearview mirrors. The inside center mirror is going to be useless, so extendable side mirrors are essential. Good oversized mirrors show the road behind the vehicle and the trailer tires on each side. More on that in a moment. When it comes to driving, owners should change their habits. The first mistake they
Catamaran owners have to get used to turning less sharply than they would with a monohull, especially when backing up. Extended side mirrors are a trailercat owner’s best friend.
Turns need to be as wide as possible, because turns sharper than 90 degrees are going to be an issue. make is turning too sharply, especially backing up. Yes, one of my first tow cars had a perfectly molded indentation from my catamaran bow because I thought the boat was farther back on the trailer when it was turning. It wasn’t. Turns need to be as wide as possible, because turns sharper than 90 degrees are going to be an issue. Curves and roundabouts shouldn’t be a problem: take it slow and wide and watch what’s going
on in the mirrors. Which brings us to using the mirrors. Cat owners especially need to learn to drive with their mirrors and keep their eyes moving all the time. A constant mirror scan should become a subconscious habit, and they need to enhance what fighter pilots call “situational awareness.” On a narrow road, drivers should use a mirror to put the outside trailer tire as close as is comfortable to the
roadside, especially when there’s oncoming traffic or a bridge to traverse. Considering the limitations imposed by the big, wide boat behind the vehicle, drivers can’t go anywhere their brain hasn’t gone first. Burger King drivethroughs are out, and so are roads or parking lots that may not have easy exits. If backing up becomes a necessity, use a spotter outside — not in the passenger seat looking backward — as a guide.

SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF
personal watercraft, people have been taking fishing rods along, but only in the past few years has the idea of doing some serious fishing on a PWC moved from a possibility to the way to go fishing. Earlier this year I got to fish on the Sea-Doo Fish Pro, the world’s first purpose-built
production fishing PWC. I thought it might be a little claustrophobic, but the personal nature of the experience made it very pleasurable. It’s sort of like kayak fishing but with the ability to cover far more water thanks to a top speed of 55 mph and an 18-and-a-half-gallon fuel tank, and it included other features that matter to

anglers. For more details about this industry-first PWC, check out our review in the May 2019 issue of Boating World or on boatingworld.com. While my experience was enlightening, we wanted to hear from dedicated PWC anglers about their experiences on other rigs, so we talked to Spencer Hull, the founder of Pacific Northwest Jet Ski Fishing (pnwjetskifishing.com) who primarily fishes on the Columbia River in Oregon and offshore, and Mike Nelson, the founder of Xtreme Fishing Products (xtremefishingproducts.com) who fishes inshore and offshore on the east coast of Florida

1 SIZE MATTERS
weight to a minimum and as low as possible. SH: Many people don’t understand just how harsh the marine environment can be and don’t rig their ski to withstand the hard impacts and vibrations that can occur. Another common mistake is bringing too much gear; take a minimalistic approach and only bring what you know you are going to use.
Spencer Hull: The best plat-
form is a PWC with the largest carrying capacity possible, not just for safety but so owners can load it up with gear. Most run a three-person ski that’s non-supercharged, for simplicity and better fuel economy. My PWC is a Kawasaki Ultra LX, which has a huge 20.6-gallon gas tank and can carry up to 496 pounds of gear. Mike Nelson: I run a Yamaha FX HO, which is one of the most popular PWCs for fishing. It’s a large, very stable WaveRunner that can hold up to 600 pounds of gear. You could fish two at a time, but it’s better with only one.
2 ADVANTAGE, PWC SH: I love the freedom and
simplicity of fishing on a PWC. If I want to move spots, I don’t have to discuss it with a crew or have multiple lines to clear; I just radio my buddy and run to a different spot. Working in tandem with someone else is safer and we end up finding the fish much faster. MN: Compared to larger center consoles, PWCs are comparatively inexpensive to buy and much cheaper to run. On most trips, I only burn about $20 of gas. Plus, you don’t need a boat ramp to launch one.
3 FISH IT UP SH: I fish up to 45 miles off the
Oregon coast, so many of my
5 THRILL FACTOR MN: Fishing from a PWC is a
modifications are to make it safer. I had a local fabrication shop install an aluminum rack up front to open up space for a fixed-mount VHF radio and GPS/fishfinder. I use a Blue Sea System Mini Add-a-Battery kit ($132) to separate my start battery from my auxiliary battery, so I always have a fresh battery in reserve. I also installed navigation lights for use in low-visibility situations. MN: The most common accessory I see is a rack on the back for a cooler and fishing rods. The best modification I’ve seen is also the most expensive, often costing more than $4,000. Called “tubbies” or “pods,” they are large compartments you attach to both sides of a PWC that act like pontoons and can usually be removed
easily. They take PWC fishing to a whole different level by adding buoyancy and stability and providing room for gear storage, extra fuel cans, livewells, rod holders and coolers that can hold longer pelagic fish.
4 WATCH OUT! MN: Rear racks have their
plusses and minuses. You can bring a cooler and maybe six fishing rods with you, but since most PWCs have rear boarding ladders, a loaded rear rack can make it difficult to get back on. I saw a guy who had a smaller PWC with a huge raised rack on the back. He loaded it with a giant cooler and four very large offshore fishing rigs, and when he got on, it tipped over right at the dock. Keep the
surreal experience. There is nothing like getting that mahimahi bite while trolling, or bottomfishing and fighting a huge red snapper or grouper. The first time you get dragged around by a huge fish, you’ll be hooked forever. SH: The biggest fish I’ve caught so far is a 65-pound halibut, which I had to haul up from 200 feet down. Not all the excitement comes from fishing, though. Once, I was crossing the Columbia River Bar and had house-sized walls of water that would just rise up out of nowhere in front of me. It was pretty intimidating but it illustrates that a PWC can handle these conditions better than most boats, because they are so maneuverable and have great throttle response. They also tend to float like a cork over the tallest seas, and if you tip over, it’s not a big deal if it’s rigged correctly.

THE EXPERTS By ALAN JONES
Today’s fishing boats, with trolling motors, power anchors and large displays, need batteries that last, such as the Odyssey 31MPC2150 or LithiumPros M3140-36 36v.
position. For a fishing outing that’s only going to last a couple of hours, conventional deep-cycle batteries will work fine, but for an outing that begins before dawn and goes ’til the sun goes down, conventional batteries won’t cut it. To go all day, it’s time to go extreme.
ABSORBED GLASS MAT (AGM)
EXTREME BATTERIES
Sometimes having a good battery is good enough, but a boat with a 36v trolling motor and big-screen electronics needs batteries that are up to the task. HERE’S A MIND-BOGGLING FACT: the rechargeable battery that uses lead plates bathed in
sulfuric acid was invented 160 years ago! And believe it or not, this pre–Civil War device, conjured up by French physician Gaston Planté in 1859, is still the most commonly used battery in cars and boats. Why? Because flooded-cell batteries are inexpensive and work well for many applications; plus, properly maintained they have a relatively long service life. People on a budget who own a modestly powered boat that doesn’t have a huge stereo or displays that resemble TV screens can get by with this oldest of battery technologies. But that’s not the direction boat building is headed, especially for buyers serious about fishing. Many anglers who own a boat less
than 27 feet long don’t use a traditional anchor anymore. In shallow water, they hit a button and one or two Power-Poles stab the bottom and hold the boat steady. In water 10 feet and deeper, instead of an anchor, they deploy a new generation of trolling motor, which uses an internal computer and GPS to hold the boat in
AGM batteries feature fiberglass matting in between positive and negative lead plates. The matting is saturated with acid, so no liquid acid is sloshing around, which can leak if the case is cracked or the plugs at the top aren’t secured (as can happen with conventional batteries). AGM batteries have a low resistance factor that makes them far faster to charge — four to five hours vs. 12 to 14 hours — and allows faster delivery of power when needed. They are also at least twice as expensive as flooded-cell batteries. Typically, a boat has one starting battery that usually features lots of thin lead plates that can deliver large bursts of power, up to 400 amperes for five to 15 seconds, in order to start an engine. A boat with a large outboard needs a battery rated for 700 cold cranking amps (CCA) and 900 marine cranking amps (MCA) for starting, and a bank of deep-cycle batteries to provide steady power to run items such as trolling motors, stereos and electronics. A 24v trolling motor needs at least two 12v batteries to run it. Most large fishing boats, a 24-foot bay boat, for example, use a 36v trolling motor, which requires three batteries. The downside is they are heavy. A group 31 VMAX deep cycle XTR31-135 AGM battery ($350) that uses lead/tin alloy plates weighs 77 pounds, so three of them and a cranking battery such as an Optima 34M Blue Top ($250) that’s rated at 800 CCA and

LITHIUM PRO M3140-36 36V weighs 38 pounds, weigh 269 pounds total. With a triple bank charger added, the boat is carrying an extra J.J. Watt. Another option is a dual-purpose battery that can be used to power trolling motors and start the main engine. The Odyssey 31M-PC2150ST-M Trolling Thunder Marine ($510) has a massive 1,150 CCA and can last for 400 cycles of up to 80 percent depth of discharge, which is impressive, since it’s recommended users only discharge most batteries to 50 percent before recharging. Odyssey uses Thin Plate Pure Lead (TPPL) technology, which uses 99.7 percent pure lead instead of an alloy, and since the plates are only 1 mm thick, it can pack an enormous number of plates into each battery. One downside to AGM batteries is
ODYSSEY 31M-PC2150 they are not tolerant of overcharging.
LITHIUM ION
To really know where state-of-the-art stands with boat batteries, look no further than top bass pros. What are they using? They spend more time on the water and use their electronics and trolling motors longer than anyone. With previous battery technology, most of them had to ration their consumption or carry a portable gas generator to keep their batteries topped off (the practice was banned a few years ago), but then came a silver bullet in the form of lithium-ion batteries. At the most recent Geico Bassmaster Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., 32 of the 50 pros used this technology. The winner,
Ott Defoe, has been using the same set of LithiumPro batteries for seven years, which is unheard of considering most pros will use batteries for only one or two seasons. In addition to being long-lived, lithium-ion batteries are extremely light. Lithium is the lightest metal, weighing 33 pounds per cubic foot compared to lead’s 708 pounds per cubic foot. And Knoxvillebased LithiumPros manufactures a 36v battery that weighs just 34 pounds and provides the same power as three group 27 batteries (according to the company). The downside? Lithium batteries are expensive; a LithiumPros M3140-36CK 36V 40Ah plus a charger costs $2,499. But fishing guides and bass pros who spend a lot of time on the water should consider that most people who switch from AGM batteries reduce their boat’s weight by about 230 pounds, which translates to higher speeds and better fuel economy. For a boat owner who changes batteries every two years or less, lithium-ion batteries might be cheaper to own.

ASK THE EXPERTS GRINDING GRID’S GEARS
Accessory to battery A NUMBER OF YEARS ago I had an insane moment and stuffed a wildly modified Ford 302
into a Toyota Hilux. Because our area is small, it was a “sleeper” for only about a week. It embarrassed my daughters forever. It had a 4-speed toploader transmission and because it was impossible to align “things,” I installed a hydraulic piston to actuate the clutch when I pushed the pedal. This worked well seven of ten times. The other three times provided the name for this column. I have a customer who bought a boat when she moved here—a 20’ Whaler with a 150 (I can’t say it) based on her boating abilities in the waters around Martha’s Vineyard. I was impressed when I should have worried. In her defense, sometime you get a worrisome product. First, her boat’s battery kept greeting her every couple of weeks, dead. She took it to a respected electrician who charged her a ton, wrote it up, but failed to tell her the batteries continued to go dead. A customer of mine across the
creek from her gave her my number and I took a look at the situation. Whoever had done the accessory wiring had included the stereo on a power-in post that wouldn’t allow the stereo to be shut off. The selector switch affected only the engine. I moved that wire ½” and the problem went away. Didn’t even charge her. Then her beautiful daughter and her boyfriend took a night cruise with a case of Bud Light and the engine quit about 15 miles from home on a moonless night. They finally
got his dad to tow them in, then back to her house in the morning. The boyfriend, majoring in electrical engineering, determined I shouldn’t have removed the power wire for the stereo and relocated it ½” away to an on/ off post, causing the engine to quit. I gave him an inexpensive class (room and board optional) on how he might select one of the humanities as an alternate major. That was as polite as I was going to get after fending off phone calls, texts and emails about how I’d spent her money. However, the engine still wouldn’t start. The fuel pump wouldn’t respond, and no matter how I traced the flow via the schematic, the computer still showed no problems until I removed the safety lanyard, at which time everything quit. I could get some items to function, but

ASK THE EXPERTS not enough to recreate a running engine. I said “The heck with it!,” and ordered a used harness from a trusted supplier. A half hour after receiving it I was back on the boat, ripping out old harness and installing new (used). The engine started immediately and gave good computer readings. The counterbalance shafts were whining like a supercharger though, a trait of this particular engine that required a component swap. Again, I got a good used one and kept it over the winter. I installed it just before the virus mandates relaxed. All week the rain was incessant, the small-craft warnings posted. Saturday evening she decided to go for a ride with her daughters. After a short run at throttle, the engine went into safe-mode and dropped RPM. She thought it wise to return home, and did so with the engine in self-preservation mode, but the throttle lever wide open. Halfway home the engine quit. She anchored and—I have proof—emailed me six (6!!!) times telling me
how she hated boating, how much money she’d wasted, yada-yada. All I was doing was taking her money (at this point I have roughly twice as much as she does invested in that stupid engine) and the emails kept coming. One email contained a picture of the tach with the engine at 1400RPM. And a drippy icon in the upper right. I asked her what warning lights were working in conjunction with the alarm. She returned the mail: ABSOLUTELY NONE!!. What did your owner’s manual show? NOTHING! Where is your owner’s manual? I don’t know. Saturday had worn me out, and I was “working on empty” when The Nurse and I went to her house Sunday afternoon and pointed to the download I was bringing her of a tach for that model. Repeat after me: W.A.T.E.R. I.N. F.U.E.L. I disconnected the sensor and the alarm stopped. Two hours later we had a majority of the water out of the boat’s and the engine’s system, and the engine was running

smoothly. I put her copy of the owner’s manual in the glove box. After packing my tools and computer, I told her some basics: An internal combustion engine needs to run on something volatile. Water is not volatile. If you hate boating, get rid of the boat. Don’t excoriate me for things I have no control over. I never found the break in the engine harness; I can give you ideas where the water in the gas came from—but no guarantees. DO NOT BERATE ME!!!!! I am your bridge between agony and ecstasy when that boat is involved. (The nurse took exception to the ecstasy word—she felt that was her domain.) EMAIL??? What about VHF, flares, TowBoat, or, heaven forbid, calling or texting the way you have all year?? Some days I don’t think there’s a labor rate high enough to make this nonsense palatable….

BUILDING ON THE OVERWHELMING success of the V Series high-performance luxury center consoles, the Viking Yacht Company has begun the next chapter in the evolution of Valhalla Boatworks –the V-46.
Viking announced the creation of Valhalla Boatworks (VBW) in February 2019, and introduced the first three models – the V-33,V-37 and V-41 – simultaneously only eight months later in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The trio set new standards in performance,fish-ability, engineering and build quality, along with personalization opportunities never seen before in this genre. “We’ve established Valhalla Boatworks as a dominating force in the center console market,” says Viking President and CEO Pat Healey.“The response has truly been tremendous as we approach 70 Valhallas delivered in our first year of production.” The Valhalla 46 takes the V Series to an entirely new level, broadening its appeal through additional accommodations and amenities while maintaining its fishing boat DNA. “We never stop innovating, fine-tuning and staying out in front of the needs of our owners and the marine industry,” says Pat. “The V-46 is a result of that commitment.”
MISSION
Like its stablemates, the V-46 is an outboard-powered center console that utilizes the patented Michael Peters Yacht Design (MPYD) double-stepped hull. “We’ve been extremely pleased with the performance of the first three boats,” says Design Manager David Wilson. “Our close collaboration with MPYD has continued,
and we expect the same high level of performance in this boat.” The V-46 possesses the same signature design traits (S-shaped sheer, doubles chines, tumble home transom bustle), aesthetic enhancements (teak toe rails and transom) and 360-degree fishing prowess of the V Series. This Valhalla’s significant length (46’ 7”) and beam (13’ 4”) allow for a massive console that functions as an air-conditioned cabin. Through the portside console door, a powder-coated pedestal with teak stair treads leads to an inviting living space. You’ll immediately notice the headroom (6’ 7”) and free-flowing open layout that’s filled with natural light flowing through four shapely port lights. Forward, a dinette with U-shaped seating and bolstered backrest surrounds a drop-down table that converts to a queen berth. On the starboard side is the galley, which features a polished Corian countertop, stainless steel sink, brushed nickel and chrome faucet, two-burner recessed stove, refrigerator/ freezer, microwave oven and cabinet storage. Directly aft of the galley is the private head with a molded-in vanity with freshwater sink and faucet, toilet and shower.
MACHINERY ROOM
The head provides access to the machinery room, which houses the 8 kW diesel generator, batteries and distribution panel, battery charger, hot water heater and provides access to helm electronics.“The

proper installation and protection of mechanical and electrical equipment is more important than ever on open outboard-powered boats,” says Viking Design and Engineering Vice President Lonni Rutt. “That’s why we’ve equipped the V-46 with a dedicated and protected walk-in space that houses critical electrical and mechanical components. The machinery room essentially serves the same purpose as the engine room on a Viking.”
STRINGER GRID/SEAKEEPER
The V-46 was designed and engineered with a mounting structure molded into the vessel’s resin-infused structural stringer grid for the installation of an available Seakeeper SK 6. “Like the infused stringer grid, all of the materials used in the 46 are analyzed for weight reduction, optimal performance and ultimately the best structure we can provide,” says Lonni. The Seakeeper is accessed through a dedicated hatch on center line forward of the lazarette, which is home to the custom-designed fuel management system and Hooker The V Series Expands with the Valhalla 46sea chest live well system. All hatches are equipped with heavy-duty gasketing that sits in recessed channels for a tight seal.
HELM
The console, helm seating modules and the forward lounge are all elevated on a 7-inch-high platform, which maximizes visibility and allows for increased interior volume below. The console maintains the streamlined, clean design of the V Series, with its controls and information displays positioned for ease of access and viewing. An expansive recessed black acrylic helm panel can hold three electronics displays up to 22 inches each. A row of flush-mounted Boca tech switches (with back lit labeling) lines the lower dash. The engine controls and Zipwake interceptor trim control panel are positioned to starboard of the center line helm pod (available in teak or faux teak)

and Edson stainless steel wheel with power knob. Quick downward glances allow for regular performance checks via the high-definition engine monitor. There are port and starboard glove boxes for storage of personal items, and four convenient stainless steel cup holders are nested neatly in the console.
SEATING
The seating opportunities on the V-46 are diverse and plentiful from bow to stern. Like the V-33, V-37 and V-41, the new Valhalla features standard Costa Marine bench seatDRAFT ing at the helm with optional Release Marine Engines up, full load 2' 8˝ (0.8 meters) or Llebroc seating consisting of three chairs Engines down, with individual armrests, folding bolsters and full load electric slides. RAWING INSPIRATION FROM technologies seen in recent Americas Cup campaigns alongside Swiss engineering expertise, Enata’s vision to bring hydrofoiling capabilities to the leisure boating world made significant waves after the Foiler’s launch in February 2018. This came after 10,000 hours of pre-production testing to fine tune every aspect of the Foiler’s design. Since its debut, Enata has continued to invest in R&D for the Foiler, seeing its advances go from strength to strength and keeping it ahead of the pack in terms of design and technology. The Foiler’s wings ingeniously absorb any unevenness on the water’s surface to create a perfectly smooth ride that is stable, comfortable and safe, even when crossing in the wakes of other boats. Passengers can wave goodbye to seasickness and the usual discomforts like back pain from bumpy boat rides, while keeping dry by eliminating the spray and splashes that usually
accompany a journey on the water. When placed side-by-side with a conventionally designed boat, the Foiler difference is clear: no skimming, no slamming no rolling. Even at high speeds, in rough seas the Foiler ride remains smooth and comfortable, while passengers on the conventional boat are tossed about, with potentially harmful impact injuries on the
back as well as a wet ride from splashes and sea spray. One of Enata’s first progressions on the Foiler was to introduce a new joystick control, at a comfortable and conveniently-located pilot seat on the foredeck. The joystick delivers an instinctive driving experience like no other, which can be mastered in no time, while the convenient viewing windows at the forepeak of the yacht allow for the perfect driving view. The Foiler uses an industrial-grade hydraulic propulsion system that is reliable, durable and exceptionally quiet, powered by twin V8 marine diesel engines that deliver a total of 740hp. The drag of the torpedoes that power the Foiler has

been minimised during hydrofoiling mode, resulting in a significant increase in speed and efficiency; it reaches top speeds of over 40 knots with lower thrust requirements than conventionally designed boats. The Foiler is just as impressive in conventionally non-foiling, “Archimedean” mode as when it is raised above the water, too. At the touch of a button, the hydrofoils are completely retracted to rest in line with the yacht’s hull and the Foiler is able to venture into shallow waters with a depth of just 0.6m, or to dock at a pontoon or mothership superyacht. The transmission can be tipped to reduce the clearing height of the Foiler even further for stowage in a superyacht’s tender garage. Following client feedback and ongoing R&D, Enata introduced a new feature to the Foiler in order to enhance comfort when underway: the active stability mode, which introduces some tilt to the yacht when turning in order to counteract any g-forces created, similar to the smooth, more even experience in a luxury car. For those who prefer a more raw, “sporty” sensation, the active stability mode can be turned off to put the Foiler in pure stability mode. This year, Enata introduced 54 new smart sensors that are located across the Foiler, which pick up data including wheel positioning, port and starboard foil angles and pressure, exhaust temperature, and propulsion performance and stability indicators. All the Foiler’s

features can be monitored and controlled through the centre console’s large touchscreen control panel or via Enata’s own “Wingman” control system. The data gathered by the sensors is then analysed by Enata’s proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) system in real time and through the Cloud, in order to make operational
recommendations to the Foiler’s pilot that will optimise performance as well as prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the yacht. The system also allows the pilot to grant remote access to Enata’s assistance team should any unexpected mechanical or technical problems arise on the Foiler, in many cases allowing them to fix an issue

without physically being on board. Technical knowledge and design innovations from Enata’s award-winning aerospace division have heavily informed the engineering and design of the Foiler from day one. Moreover, Enata upholds the same high-precision engineering, tolerance and fitness standards in its aerospace and marine divisions. The sharing of intellectual property alongside major investment into Enata’s state -of-the-art facilities in the UAE have led to the development of features that are truly astonishing and previously unseen on a yacht of any size or category.

ARE THERE ANY BOATS LEFT FOR SALE IN SO CAL?
Some Southern California boat dealers and brokers have reported business is good – so good that inventory is low and in some cases, all of their boats are in contracts. BY LINDSEY GLASGOW
30
SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2020
WITH SUMMER CONCERTS, ATTENDING SPORTING events, backyard barbecues and group activities on a hiatus this summer due to the Coronavirus, boating remains an activity open to Southern Californians and other waterfront communities. “We had a couple customers tell us, people we had never seen before, this is what they’re going to do now,” Steve Schock said. “They’re not going to go on big expensive vacations.” Such high interest is leaving some boat dealers with dwindling inventory and many buyers are forgoing the luxury of purchasing the perfect boat to just have something to get out on the water in this summer. Steve said he got that exact call from a customer in Northern California. “He said what do you have right now that I can buy?” Steve Schock said. “That is unusual for us,” Ruth Schock followed. “That’s a first for me,” Steve Schock replied. Baird, in partnership with Marine Retailers Association of the Americas (MRAA) and Soundings Trade Only, surveyed 103 marine retailers in the US on their current conditions and released the results in a report titled June 2020 Marine Retailer Pulse
Report. According to the report, new boat inventory among those retailers was the leanest in the history of the 6-year-old report, with 86 percent of dealers reporting new boat inventory is “too low” versus just 3 percent considering it “too high.” In the used boat sector, 87 percent of dealers reported inventory is “too low” versus just 1 percent responding “too high,” the largest gap recorded in the survey’s history. “What was happening, and I think the customers were seeing it, the used boats were disappearing,” Steve Schock said. “In the very beginning it was our brokerage and our trades, they just went out the door, it seems like in just two weeks. We blew through all our used boats.” The business is also trickling down to boat and yacht financial services firms and banks. Joni Geis of Sterling Associates in San Diego said banks are receiving three to four times the volume of boat loan applications that is normal for this time of year. “We’re joking around that there have to be no more boats for sale in California,” Geis said. With banks overwhelmed with processing loan applications, it is taking longer for the approval process. “One of the downsides to the banks taking this amount of time to get through the underwriting process is that the finance deals become less attractive to brokers and sellers than the cash deals,” Geis said. She said the underwriting process to determine if a customer qualifies or not has not changed and customers who qualify are still able to get loans. “The underwriting is exactly the same,” Geis said. “It’s just that because you’re getting three to four times the volume your approval rate drops down because not everybody can qualify for a boat loan.” The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) reported a new record for new boat sales was set in May. According to NMMA, new boat sales rebounded by 59 percent in May from April, and were up 9 percent from pre-pandemic levels on a seasonally-adjusted basis. Leading the growth were personal watercrafts, saltwater fishing boats, and jet boats, which account for 41 percent of new boat
The Schocks said they were completely out of used boats and were running low on new boats. sales annually. In addition, NMMA found outboard engine shipments to boat builders increased for the second consecutive month through June. The Schocks said business for them has been booming the past few months. “We are definitely in danger of running out of boats,” Steve Schock said in early July. During the early July conversation, the Schocks said they were completely out of used boats and were running low on new boats. The Schocks have a relatively small operation with an average inventory of about six to eight used boats and average inventory of about 10 new boats. “We were prepared to be all doom and gloom and it’s been exciting,” Ruth Schock said. They said customers have been everyone from first-time buyers, new boaters and experienced boaters trading in or looking for another boat. Steve said people were coming in ready to buy a boat that day. “They usually spend a month picking out the right boat and all the accessories and options and you know that’s a big process, right now they’re like no, what do you have? I want to get on the water,” Steve Schock said. According to the Pulse Report, 89 percent of boat dealers experienced retail growth in June, up from 70 percent in May, the highest in the survey’s history. Used boat retail also reported growth, with 84 percent reporting retail growth in June. The Pulse Report noted June typically represents about 15 percent of annual retail sales. The Log spoke with Barrett Canfield, president of South Coast Yachts San Diego and Newport Beach, back in April, who said inquiries were light but predicted “all this time surfing YouTube boating videos at
home will create a pent-up demand to get out on the water.” Canfield said not only has business been booming since May, they are actively hiring new people to help handle the demand. “The biggest surprise to us and everyone I’ve spoken to in the boating industry is the incredible surge in boat sales in the last two months,” Canfield said in an email. “We never expected this, but we are surely happy that we are busy serving our customers with new and brokerage boats in a very active market.” He said the months of March and April were slow, but monthly sales on new boats for the months of May and June were up 45 percent over those months in 2019 and brokerage was up 26 percent from 2019. He said about 10 percent of buyers so far this year are new boaters. “We believe we are on par for an excellent 2020 in boat sales for both new and brokerage,” Canfield said in an email.

NAVIGATION RISK ASSESSMENT COMPLETED FOR PROPOSED VENTURA SHELLFISH PROJECT The assessment document was just one of several regulatory hurdles for a proposed shellfish aquaculture farm in federal waters near Ventura Harbor. BY LINDSEY GLASGOW
VENTURA—THE VENTURA PORT DISTRICT HAS completed a Navigation Risk Assessment as part of a permit application for the Ventura Shellfish Enterprise (VSE), a proposal to establish an aquaculture farm in federal waters near Ventura Harbor. The VSE project hopes to create a 2,000-acre commercial bivalve shellfish aquaculture operation where the private sector could sub-permit 100-acre lots to grow Mediterranean mussels. The project is a partnership between the port district, Coastal Marine Biolabs, The Cultured Abalone Farm,
Ventura Shellfish Project
and Ashworth Leininger Group. The Port District has been working on permitting for the project since 2018, with the two main regulatory agencies being the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the California Coastal Commission. One of the latest hurdles was a Navigation Risk
The VSE project would grow Mediterranean mussels via submerged long lines in the Santa Barbara Channel with the goal of producing safe, sustainably produced, and locally grown shellfish and boosting the local economy.

Assessment requested by U.S. Coast Guard in response to the Port District’s application with the Corps of Engineers. The Port District Board of Commissioners, on July 15, voted to submit the risk assessment to the USCG. COWI, the consulting group which completed the risk assessment, presented the draft and collected public comments at the July 1 Port District Board of Commissioners meeting. A recap of the assessment was presented at the Board of Port Commissioners meeting on July 15 as well as responses to comments received on the analysis. The purpose of the Navigational Risk Assessment was to provide the USCG information on the vessel type and waterway use near the proposed aquaculture locations, waterway characteristics, the risk of collision as a result of the aquaculture project, additional navigation considerations and potential mitigation measures. Risks identified in the assessment included local third party vessel becoming entangled with aquaculture equipment when intentionally or unintentionally entering the project site, commercial vessels drifting into farm, vessel entanglement with partially or fully detached aquaculture equipment (lines, ropes etc.), collision between project vessels and third party vessels, project vessel collision with project vessel and collision between two third party vessels. The assessment stated all those risks were low or negligible. “We were able to conclude the risks associated with this project were low, not to say they aren’t there, just to say that they were evaluated as low,” Maria Grønnegaard from COWI said at the July 15 meeting. COWI also provided a list of additional mitigation efforts that could be implemented to further reduce risks including speed restriction, an exclusion zone prohibiting third party vessel traffic unrelated to

project construction and operation inside the project site, AIS on project vessels and increased communication to the local maritime community. The Navigational Risk Assessment drew 16 comments, which COWI officials said fit into five different themes: support of the use of smart buoys and E-navigation equipment, concern of exclusions zones and people noting that was not preferable, over reliance on AIS data in the risk assessment, concerns additional trips from Ventura Harbor to the project area and back will increase potential for collisions and groundings and concerns of commercial vessel gear entanglement with aquaculture equipment. The Board of Commissioners ultimately voted 3-1 to send the Navigation Risk Assessment to the USCG and other regulatory agencies as necessary. They also voted to direct staff to draft a cover letter inviting discussion with USCG and showing support for providing additional communication with mariners and requirements
for AIS on project vessels as additional mitigation efforts. “The Coast Guard asked for it and to sit on it I think would frustrate our process,” said Commissioner Everard Ashworth. The Port District, with one hurdle out of the way, still has several others to address before the project can move forward. The Port District Board of Commissioners received an annual status report on the project at the July 15 meeting, which is required as part of their California Sea Grant. The Port District received a two-year California Sea Grant in 2018 totaling $266,660 to help complete the permitting process, environmental review, shellfish sanitation, mussel grower selection and training processes. Port District staff requested a one-year, no-cost extension of the grant to complete the tasks, with the staff report noting additional work is needed to complete all those tasks. One of the biggest challenges is a dispute
with the Ventura County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo). LAFCo, In the fall of 2018, contacted VPD to obtain information on the VSE project. LAFCo’s concerns related to the fact that the project was to be located outside the existing territorial boundaries of VPD and LAFCo did not have authority to approve the project. The Corps has paused its consideration of the VSE project pending resolution of the issue. The port district reported discussions with LADCo are ongoing. Meanwhile, Marine Biolabs (CMB) and The Cultured Abalone (TCA) continue to work on food safety and shellfish sanitation. CMB and TCA in February began deploying mussel sentinel lines in the Santa Barbara Channel to test for Food & Drug Administration safety requirements. The data collected from test lines will inform the design of the Biotoxin Monitoring and Contingency Plan and potentially minimize the amount and cost of testing imposed on shellfish growers by the FDA.

US SAILING ANNOUNCES TWO TEAM MEMBERS FOR TOKYO GAMES Stu McNay and David Hughes earned selections to upcoming Olympics in Japan. BY PARIMAL M. ROHIT
BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND—SAILORS STU MCNAY of Providence, Rhode Island and David Hughes of Miami, Florida were announced as the first two nominations of the 2020 Olympic Games. Both earned a selection to the Tokyo 2020 U.S. Olympic Sailing team. They were also nominated to Team USA. US Sailing made the announcement on June 23, shortly after releasing revisions of its selection procedures. McNay and Hughes made the sailing team based upon
the conclusion of the Men’s 470 Olympic Trials, which had two selection events. Both sailors also competed at the 2016 Games in Rio. “Being nominated to the U.S. Olympic Team is an honor that never gets old,” Hughes said. “Representing the USA is bigger than any one of us. It’s a duty and privilege that Stu and I don’t take lightly.” Tokyo will be the fourth Games for McNay and second Games for Hughes, according to US Sailing. “Together, the team finished fourth overall in Rio and has stood on the podium in several major
international events,” US Sailing staff added in a released statement. The US Sailing Team is returning to on-the-water training; the team had taken time of from training due to Covid-19. Tokyo’s hosting of the Summer Games was also postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the Olympiad now scheduled to take place in July 2021. “The virus has clearly changed our world and continues to change us in ways we don’t yet realize. The Olympics is no exception, given the postponement of the Tokyo Games and everything that feeds into it,” Hughes said. “That said, we’ve also been handed an unexpected chance for reflection on what we do and why. It is up to us to meet the moment and retool our approach to Olympic success.” Hughes and McNay are both in Marion, Massachusetts, according to US Sailing, where they are training and preparing for the Tokyo Games. US Sailing Head Coach Luther Carpenter said Hughes and McNay bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the sailing team. “The combination of their racing successes, 470-specific knowledge, and avid desire to perform well over the entire week of the Olympic competition gives me confidence that they will be standing on the podium in Enoshima,” Carpenter said. Sailing events will be held in Enoshima, a suburb of Tokyo. The first nominations for Team USA Sailing are in: Stu McNay and David Hughes. Both sailors earned their respective nominations after US Sailing revised selection procedures. McNay and Hughes competed in the 2016 Games in Rio.

USS BONHOMME RICHARD SUFFERS THREE ALARM FIRE BY PARIMAL M. ROHIT
SAN DIEGO—FIRE CREWS FROM MULTIPLE agencies reportedly made substantial progress in putting out a blaze aboard the U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship, USS Bonhomme Richard, in San Diego. The fire began aboard the ship on July 12; flare ups and hot spots persisted through July 15, with hundreds of sailor and firefighters reportedly working to put out the blaze. USS Bonhomme Richard, which is based in San Diego, is weeks away from its 22nd birthday; the Navy ship was commissioned on Aug. 15, 1998. The cause of the fire, which started in a lower storage area, is still under investigation, according to news reports. The Port of San Diego Harbor Police was among the agencies who joined the U.S. Navy in battling the ship fire. “Port of San Diego Harbor Police assisted @USNavy with a 3 alarm fire aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard. Great teamwork displayed by all the agencies that responded. Thankfully the vessel was evacuated with no loss of life,” the Port of San Diego Harbor Police tweeted on July 12. Harbor Police staff shared four photos of the ship fire in its Twitter post. The San Diego Union-Tribune, on July 15, reported 23 civilians and 40 sailors were injured while trying to put out the fire. A July 13 tweet by the U.S. Navy stated 36 sailors and 23 civilians were being treated for minor injuries, “including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation.” The fire was not declared extinguished as of July 15. This story will be updated online at thelog.com.

BACTERIAL OUTBREAK FORCES STATE TO EUTHANIZE HATCHERY FISH Trout at three hatcheries in Southern California and Eastern Sierras were given a death sentence to prevent a spread of infection. BY PARIMAL M. ROHIT
SACRAMENTO—A SMALL CORNER OF THE fish world was on the verge of experiencing a localized pandemic of its own – as if the worldwide spread of Coronavirus amongst humans (and the associated political discourse) hasn’t dominated headlines in this publication (and others). The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced they euthanized trout at three fish hatcheries in Southern California and the Eastern Sierras. State officials decided to euthanize the trout after a bacterial outbreak affected 3.2 million fish, it was announced on July 20. Mojave River Hatchery, Black Rock Hatchery and Fish Springs Hatchery were the three hatcheries where fish were euthanized. The hatcheries provide fish to CDFW’s South Coast and Inland Desert regions. CDFW staff said its action would “have a profound effect on CDFW’s ability to stock fish for anglers in [Southern California and Inland Desert] regions in the near future.” “Euthanizing our hatchery stocks was
not a decision we came to lightly, but it had to be done,” Jay Rowan, an environmental program manager for CDFW hatcheries, said in a released statement. “This bacterium is resistant to all the treatment options we have available for fish. The fish losses were getting worse despite our treatments. The best option we have available that will get us back to planting fish from these hatcheries in the shortest timeline is to clear the raceways, thoroughly disinfect the facilities, and start over.” The three hatcheries were placed under quarantine for more than one month, allowing pathologists and hatchery staff to conduct tests and research potential treatment options. “The outbreak of Lactococcus garvieae, which is similar to streptococcus, has been
(Left) Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in fish hatchery raceways, Warm Springs Fish Hatchery near Big Pine, Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, California, USA (Above) Rainbow trout
reported in cattle and poultry farms as well as fresh and saltwater fish and shellfish hatcheries around the world, but had never before been detected in fish in California,” CDFW staff said. “Research of treatment options employed at trout farms in Europe and other parts of the world show there is almost no chance for successfully eliminating the bacteria from a facility without depopulation and disinfection.” Common symptoms affiliated with L. garvieae include bulging eyes, lethargic/ erratic swimming and increased mortality. Fish can also be asymptomatic and show no signed of infection, depending upon water temperature and stress, according to CDFW staff. “Fish-to-human transmission of this bacteria is rare and unlikely but there are several documented instances associated with immunocompromised people consuming infected raw fish and unpasteurized milk products,” CDFW staff stated. Eastern Sierra’s Hot Creek Hatchery has tested negative for L. garvieae and is still providing plants for eight waterways in Inyo and Mono counties, according to CDFW staff. “CDFW is in the process of developing a modified stocking plan to reallocate fish from central and northern California hatcheries to a small number of high angler use, easily accessible waters in geographically distinct parts of the eastern Sierra and Southern California,” CDFW staff stated. Anyone who has questions about L. garvieae can reach out to CDFW staff via email at hatcherybacteriainfo@wildlife. ca.gov.

BROKERAGE ADVICE
THIS MONTH’S QUESTIONS: WHAT IS A MISTAKE BUYERS MAKE THAT A BROKER CAN STEER THEM CLEAR OF? Broker #1
T
he big mistake I’ve seen a few times is choosing to bypass a survey. Someone will think he knows the brand or the boat’s not old enough to need a survey, and elect to not get one done. It’s a mistake. It’s important to get one on every used boat, because insurance companies and lenders want to have a survey to help them in their decision-making process, and a professional surveyor’s report is very valuable. The surveyors are the professionals who will report the truth about the boat’s condition and help prepare the buyer for ownership.
Broker #2
W
hat I find with most first-time buyers — as with pretty much all boat buyers — is that it’s a very emotional decision. People look at boats a couple of different ways. What I have seen lately is people look for a bargain or even a steal. I’ve had buyers tell me they’re looking for a steal. They’ll go for the deal, which is satisfying emotionally in the short term, instead of for the right boat for them. But that can lead to a bad purchase. What I try to guide people to is the right boat. They’ll come into it wanting a boat with a bridge, but they’ll find a steal on a cruiser, and what happens is they keep the boat for a year or two and end up buying a bridge boat. I encourage people to fall in love with a certain kind of boat first and then go to the market and look for it. Something else buyers do that can lead to a bad “good” deal is find a boat that looks pretty without considering what they can’t see. A good broker knows that 50 percent or more of the value of a boat is below the decks — stuff that people caught up in the emotion of the process don’t look at. Say there’s a 1985 model that’s been in salt water that whole time. It may look pretty up top, but there could be big problems below, with things such as pumps, through-hulls, filters and more. I’ve seen people buy a deal and then work on the thing all the time. Boating is supposed to be fun; spending all your time fixing stuff doesn’t make it fun. As an example, a boater in San Diego takes his boat to Catalina for a week. When he gets there, a 10-cent O-ring on the toilet goes out. He’s coming home to get it fixed and the week is ruined. That may or may not have been discovered on closer inspection, but it highlights the point that the little things count. A tiny thing can ruin your day. I always encourage people to buy the newest boat they can afford. If that means going a few feet shorter but getting a newer boat, that’s the direction I encourage them to go. Most of the expenses of owning a boat — slip fees, washing, cleaning, fuel, etc. — are going to be similar no matter the age of the boat, so going with a newer model doesn’t add much to the ongoing post-purchase costs, and it will likely decrease maintenance costs. Once people own a boat, they understand the reality of it and are able to make decisions that aren’t purely emotional — though emotion will always be a part of boat buying.
