LOOKING BACK I GREW UP ENAMORED with old stuff, the older

the better, until I woke one day to discover I was right there. I’d become what I’d long coveted; I (and a magazine I owned) was the relic on top of the pile of really old stuff. Take boating publications. First it was Rudder, the oldest boating title in the country. Rudder faded into and out of the history books only to be replaced as the oldest by Motor Boating & Sailing (formerly The Motor Boating Magazine), from the Hearst family, known in many circles for their newspapers and print titles. The publication’s name was shortened to MotorBoating. One story among its competitors was the Hearsts kept MB around to be the centerpiece on the coffee table in the family’s penthouse suite. That was truly unkind, because MotorBoating was a great title while it was being published, and it always kept its competition on its collective toes. Sea quietly became the oldest boating title in print when, in 2011, MotorBoating ceased its print run and went digital only. We were the last title standing, all that began before us now gone. Sea has had several owners over the years, from its beginning as Pacific Motor Boat and through its transition to Sea, during which time it came to be owned by CBS and became part of a triumvirate of Sea, Rudder and Lakeland Boating. Then we, DMC, came along and purchased Sea from Bob Petersen, who was noted for his automotive and general interest titles and had brought his Tollycraft to one of our boat shows. At about the same time, Walter “Bing” 6

O’Meara purchased Lakeland Boating, where he worked, from Petersen, and things began to settle down. Nearly a decade ago, on my way to the Seattle Boat Show, I wanted to see if I could find Sea’s original publishing headquarters in downtown Seattle — if it still existed. The address was right there in the masthead of the first edition of the magazine. How difficult could that be to locate? I had the address, and old buildings in Seattle are often preserved. It was worth a shot. On the way to the boat show, I made a couple of small detours, found what appeared to be the correct address and parked the rental car. I walked into the second-floor office — trying not to look or act deranged — and told the office staff a crazy and true story about how a hundred or so years earlier, Sea was born right where they were sitting, that it is still in print and here’s a current issue. It was an eerie feeling to return to the scene where more than 100 years prior Pacific Motor Boat’s founders had written and published the first issue of Sea’s predecessor. I was a little nervous approaching the employees in their office, but that soon went away as I realized they weren’t calling the police, and they seemed to buy my tale of years past. They even set me up in a cozy spot overlooking the craziness outside, where I proceeded to write the following issue’s editor’s message.

Aft of the master is a semi-hidden galley — set up more for a crewed yacht — a day head, a dining area and a salon. The yacht’s 23-foot, 7-inch beam ensures plenty of interior space even with wide sidedecks, and walls of windows to either side come down to the top of the sofas, so seated guests can enjoy a view of their surroundings. Overhead is a mirrored, vaulted ceiling that adds to the area’s perceived size.

An enclosed skylounge and a maindeck master give the new model from Johnson a heightened feeling of luxury.

A skylounge, a pilothouse, a main-deck master, a full-beam VIP, a hydraulic swim platform big enough for a tender, a dining table for 10, social spaces throughout, twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT diesels. Did we miss anything? Well, yes, plenty, but those are the highlights of the newest model from Johnson Yachts, the 110 Skylounge. At an even 110 feet long, the Johnson 110 Skylounge features four staterooms belowdecks (plus two crew cabins all the way aft), each with an en suite head. The full-beam VIP cabin has a his and hers head with a walkthrough shower between. Basically, it’s a second master, since the owner’s cabin is on the main deck. Situated far forward, the master features a centerline berth that faces forward, a settee to port, his and hers dressing tables, and a head that is forward and down a couple of steps to preserve the 180-degree views out wraparound windows.

A wet bar, a day head, an L-shaped settee with a table and a twin-seat helm occupy the skylounge, and an open deck aft of it can be used in a variety of ways. When guests require privacy, the captain can retreat to the elevated pilothouse, where a fully outfitted helm awaits. With a total of 3,850 hp provided by twin CAT C32 ACERT diesels, the Johnson 110 Skylounge tops out at 22 knots. ABT zero-speed fins and a Seakeeper 35 gyro deliver stability at all times.

Boaters have access to activities that might make their non-boat-owning friends jealous.

BOATERS IN MEXICO GET to experience

remarkable wonders by land and sea that are all made possible by traveling via boat. And not just another pretty sunset (yawn), but a participatory world right off the bow. Here are six experiences boat owners can partake of that other people have to work a lot harder to accomplish.

Pet a baby gray whale. This is

in the wild, not in a petting zoo. As you coast up or down the outside of Baja, anchor off Punta Abreojos, then board a ranger panga to enter San Ignacio Lagoon National Park, where hundreds of pregnant gray whales retire each winter to give birth. In one corner of the 16-mile lagoon, certain

mommas, dubbed “friendlies,” are known to lift their 20-foot-long babies to the surface right alongside the familiar ranger pangas, allowing people to pet — or even kiss — the baby whales’ noses. Migrating gray whales start arriving here in December and depart in March. For details, contact Baja Eco Tours at (619) 819-2966, or from the Abreojos anchorage, hail a park ranger on VHF Channel 16.

Hear the ghosts of La Salina.

For 200 years, pioneer families came to live on Carmen Island to harvest salt from vast natural ponds, bag it and load it on a ship to Guaymas. But in 1982 the owners suddenly shut down operations, evicted all

200 villagers, forced them to leave their belongings and board the last ship bound for Guaymas. Overnight La Salina became a ghost town consisting of 20 two-bedroom cabins, a schoolhouse, a tiny chapel and a two-story stone building. Today, the rusted hulks of machinery are wasting away, and the tall wooden pier has collapsed into the bay. A caretaker occasionally lights a candle in the chapel, but the wind blows it out. If you visit, you’ll probably hear screen doors slowly creak open and slam shut. But even in the eerie desert silence you may hear children giggle in the schoolyard and someone whistle a sad tune on the beach. La Salina’s roomy anchorage on the east side of Carmen Island is good in the prevailing north wind. From here it’s 20 miles down to Puerto Escondido or 27 miles up and around to Loreto.

A whale shark (far left) interacts with swimmers near Cerralvo Island. Elsewhere, boaters can touch the gray whales near Punta Abreojos (top left), experience vibrant coral near Los Frailes (middle left) and listen for ghosts at La Salina.

Swim with the world’s largest fish. Whale sharks (rhincodon typus)

are docile polka-dotted giants, and despite their enormous maws and their size — some males grow to 62 feet and 34 tons — they’re filter-feeders, eating only plankton, not humans. La Paz is one of the few places on Earth where whale sharks congregate, November through April, after a 12,000mile transpacific migration. Perfect conditions for whale-shark sightings are found about four and one-quarter miles north of Cerralvo Island, around tiny Arrecife de la Foca (Seal Reef). La Paz guides warn that no more than four good swimmers can be in the water near an endangered whale shark, and one person must stay in the boat. Whale sharks are normally slow swimmers, so photos are almost assured. But please don’t touch the giants.

Seal Reef lies about 35 miles east of La Paz via the San Lorenzo Channel.

Land on the “Catch 22” movie set. Remember the movie “Catch

22”? Where the B-25 crash lands? And when bomber pilot Yosarrian goes insane? Just north of San Carlos, Sonora, you can anchor off Algadones Beach, swim ashore (or take the dinghy) with a few pesos in your pocket and enjoy a cold cerveza at the Soggy Peso Bar. This cotton-white beach is where the B-25 actually crashed and burned (intentionally) during the filming of the hit movie “Catch 22,” based on Joseph Heller’s 1961 novel. When filming ended, Paramount Pictures had to bury the B-25’s charred hulk in the sand at the north end of Algadones Beach — thus the foundation of the Soggy Peso Bar. From Catch 22 Beach, it’s only one mile south to Marina Real, or six miles around the landmark Tetas de Cabra headland to Marina San Carlos.

Drape yourself in red fans and yellow sponges. Cabo Pulmo

Reef at Los Frailes is the largest living coral reef system in western North America. Nine fingers of hard coral lie just below the surface in crystal clear water. After thriving for 20,000 years, this 9-mile-long reef almost died but was rescued 25 years ago as a national park where fishing is prohibited. Now Cabo Pulmo is the most successful marine reserve in the world, according to the Smithsonian. I believe it’s the richest and most spectacularly colorful underwater place in all of Pacific Mexico. Hail “Cabo Pulmo National Park” on VHF Channel 16 and one of the uniformed rangers will zoom out in a panga to show you where to anchor and give you a reef map that shows the best snorkel and scuba spots. Jump in! Glide through corridors of coral castles that fly red and purple coral fans, flanked by orange and yellow sponge flutes. That clicking sound? It’s thousands of shrimp and lobsters hiding in the coral crannies. From here, it’s about 32 sea miles down to San Jose del Cabo, or 90 miles up to La Paz.

Hike Steinbeck Canyon’s secret waterfalls and swimming holes. When naturalist John

Steinbeck first hiked Baja in search of endangered big-horn sheep, locals expected he’d return with a trophy carcass. Instead, he emptied a pocket full of dry sheep pellets, boasting to reporters that he’d found big horn sheep, yes, but he’d left them “alive and healthy.” Tucked deep within the picturesque Sierra La Giganta, Steinbeck’s circuitous canyon route is found about 15 miles south of Loreto. The medium-intensity hike, about one and three-quarter miles, twists between steep shady cliffs and requires a couple of 15-foot boulder scrambles, but intrepid hikers are rewarded with a couple of waterfalls and waterslides into skinny-dipping pools — especially dramatic and welcome after summer rains. Steinbeck’s Canyon starts less than two miles west of Marina Puerto Escondido, reached via a gravel road that runs west from Highway 1.

THE EXPERTS By DEANE HISLOP

ALL PUMPED UP

Freshwater pumps require minimal care, but they sometimes need to be replaced. Here’s how. ONE OF THE MOST common plumbing complaints boaters have is a badly behaving freshwater pump. Whether the problem is noise, a leak or “no water,” some cruisers believe pumps just suck. Fortunately, these pumps don’t require a lot of attention to keep them going, but the care they do require is important, and sometimes critical.

The most common pumps on recreational boats are the diaphragm style used for pressurizing freshwater and deck washdown systems. Most of them use an electric motor that drives a rotating eccentric cam or plate to actuate three or more neoprene-capped pump chambers. Each chamber is equipped with an inlet and outlet valve to ensure a positive, pressurized flow of water. The only maintenance that diaphragm pumps normally require is a regular cleaning of the strainer between the pump and the water supply. The task is important because tiny bits of foreign matter can lodge in a pump’s valves and cause them to leak, resulting in a loss of pressure and excess cycling of the pump. If your boat doesn’t 20

have such a strainer, make it a priority to install one, but make sure the strainer’s flow rating matches the pump’s rating, to avoid restriction. Another type of diaphragm pump has a single, large pump chamber whose diaphragm is operated by a crankshaft and connecting rod arrangement mounted above it. The crankshaft is powered by an electric motor that may drive it directly or by means of a miniature rubber belt. Single-chamber diaphragm pumps tend to have a high capacity and are often found on larger boats, but their inlets must still be effectively filtered. Rubber belts, if present, should be periodically checked for wear or damage. And an extra belt should be part of your spares kit. Normal maintenance won’t always keep a pump operating effectively. That’s why most manufacturers offer inexpensive

ASK THE EXPERTS rebuild kits for their pumps. These kits contain all the replacement parts normally required to return the pump to its original performance. Aboard Easy Goin’ we’ve elected to carry a spare water pump rather than a rebuild kit. For us it’s easier to replace the pump and take the failed pump home and rebuild it. Pulling a defective pump out and slipping

in a new one isn’t a difficult task and takes less time than undertaking a rebuild.

ON-THE-SPOT REPLACEMENT

First, figure out if the boat’s freshwater tank is higher, lower or on the same level as the water pump. Unless the tank is much lower than the pump, or it is equipped with a shut-off valve, you need to drain the tank

so water doesn’t adhere to gravity’s call and rush into the boat. With the pump’s master power switch turned off and all the water drained from the freshwater holding tank, it’s time to tackle the removal portion of the job. Disconnect the leads that run directly into the pump, which are typically red and black in color. Some have push-on connectors and others may use heat-shrink crimp connectors. Cut the wires as close to the connectors as possible. Next, use a wrench or possibly “water pump pliers” (aka Channellock) to remove the waterline fittings from the pump. Have a towel or absorbent rag at hand, because there will likely be some amount of water in the lines that will drain out when the fittings are disconnected. Water pumps are usually held in place either on a bulkhead or horizontal surface with three or four screws running through a rubber “foot” that absorbs vibration and cuts some of the noise. If the replacement pump’s footprint is identical to the old pump, there will be no need to drill any new holes for mounting. With the old pump out of the way, clean the area, clearing away any water and debris. Replacing the old pump with the new one is basically a “reverse order” operation. However, give thought to the mounting screws that hold down the pump. In one instance I found the old pump screws had square heads. As much as I like using this style of screw, the pump was tucked back in a dark corner with little clearance. Since I couldn’t see the screws to appropriately line up the driver tip to get them out, there was a lot of grumbling frustration before I completed the task. When the new pump went in, I mounted it with Phillips head screws; it should be easier to remove, if there’s a next time. In this same vein, don’t overdo it on the torque when you reattach the waterlines to the pump. Simply hand-tighten the fittings, then give them a little snugging with the wrench. Then, put some water in the tank, flip the switch and check for leaks. Tighten any fittings that leak only enough to get rid the leak. Overdo it and you may crack the plastic fitting.

SEA TRIAL

By MIKE WERLING

EVERGLADES 340DC

The only dual console in the builder’s lineup is versatile, fast, safe and fully featured.

SPECS arms while on a sea trial is about as advantageous as having a third eye during an eclipse, but on this day my oversized limbs came in handy. We were whipping across the top of the waves at 53 mph in the Everglades 340DC (Dual Console) when my host’s hat succumbed to the wind, pirouetted not pensively at all somewhere over the cockpit and performed an elegant bill-first dive into the water. A quick 180 had us back in the area of the HOB, and we spotted the drenched cap. I could have used the starboard-side dive door, which opens inward to accommodate any circumstance that might not allow a door to swing out, to retrieve the hat. But someone with a wingspan that exceeds his 78-inch height has little need for such shortcuts, and Garrison Williams of Tide Yacht Sales had his head cover back,

though it spent the remainder of the test in the sink housed in a galley unit immediately aft of the helm seat. We were tucked safely behind the Everglades 340DC’s impressive windshield, which wraps around to the sides, so how did Williams’ hat land in the drink? We had the middle section of the windshield open. It’s one of the signature features on the 340DC, and Williams had been showing me how it works. It doesn’t swing open manually like most dual console windshields do. This one, with the simple push of a button, quietly slides open to the port side. Simple as can be.

ROOM TO ROAM, RELAX

As the newest boat in the Everglades lineup, and the only dual console, the 340DC possesses the ability to host a few anglers for a day of, hopefully, catching, or it

can keep a group of a dozen or so lollers comfortable during a day cruise around the harbor, or it can put a couple in the thick of things for a weekend at a favorite island haunt. Through the aforementioned dive door and a door from the swim platform, also on the starboard side, is the cockpit. At 96 square feet, it does double duty as a fish-fighting arena and a conversation area, potentially for folks who don’t want the cover provided by the hardtop, though a power extended sun shade can be deployed. Anglers will appreciate the 71-gallon transom fishbox, which can be segmented, the 24-gallon circulating and pressurized livewell, rod holders in the gunwales and on the aft legs of the hardtop support, and optional carbon-fiber outriggers. Padding along the aft and port sides will soften the fighting arena at about most anglers’ thigh height. On the social front, the cockpit includes a loveseat bench that faces aft (and shares a base with the companion settee forward of it) and two seats that fold forward and down out of the transom; they hide away for fishing action. A galley console just aft of the helm seat houses a sink, an electric grill, a refrigerator, a couple of speakers for the entertainment system and storage. The entire space transitions fairly easily from action to inaction, from tending riggers to measuring jiggers.

THE POINTY END

Opposite the cockpit, through the aforementioned walkthrough created by the power window and its attendant door, is a bow seating area that wraps around and is enhanced by a removable table that can be upgraded to SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2019  27

Several people can sit with their feet on the deck, or two people can use the seats like a chaise lounge — backrests aft make this possible — and bogart the area. Integrated into the very forward section of the wraparound seating is a 30-quart cooler, which is sure to encourage laziness (“I never have to leave this seat.”) on a lazy day of drifting or harbor idling.

CONSOLE ’COMMODATIONS

Space inside the consoles is not wasted. Everglades designers and engineers figured out a way to give this 33-and-a-half footer (36 feet with the engines) a berth and a head with a shower. In the port console is a sofa that converts to a berth and a TV. Air conditioning is an option, for muggy nights or afternoon naps on the hook in a secluded cove. To starboard, day cruisers and/or anglers will find the head. Its wenge cabinetry and solid-surface countertops tie it in with the rest of the boat, and its vanity top stretches the length of the space. The toilet — holding capacity is 15 gallons — is situated against the forward wall, and a teak shower seat folds down to cover it, giving folks a perch upon which to sit during a shower. Given that it’s a wet head — the shower wand

CAP’N & COMPANIONS

Working our way back to the midpoint of the Everglades 340DC, we find the helm, captain’s seat and companion seat. The latter is on the port side and can accommodate two people on its elevated perch. Its seat bottom opens the long way, swinging up on its portside hinges to expose storage for life jackets or anything else that will fit. (On a side note, the storage here is much like in other places aboard in that a net hangs

RANGER TUGS

41 COMMAND BRIDGE At 10 feet longer than the next biggest Ranger, this flagship is a big step up.

30  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2019

+ Sea Trial Ranger.indd 30

7/30/19 12:33 PM

The first IPSpowered boat in the Ranger Tugs lineup, the 41 Command Bridge can reach 24.8 knots and is 10 feet longer than the next largest Ranger.

I JUMPED AT THE chance to conduct a review of and spend a night aboard the new Ranger Tugs 41 as part of an extended sea trial in the Canadian Gulf Islands. It was during one of the builder’s regular fleet gatherings, where on a sunny but windy day at the end of May, about 40 Rangers crowded into Ganges Marina on Salt Spring Island.

For anyone not familiar with Ranger Tugs, the parent company, Fluid Motion, was founded in 1958 in Kent, Wash., by David Livingston, who designed, built and marketed many different vessels (including the Livingston dinghy) and designed boats for a wide range of other manufacturers, including Regal, Bayliner and Wellcraft. In 1998, Fluid Motion acquired the design for the Ranger 21 and improved it. Due to its immediate success, the Ranger line grew and grew, and now it consists of fast trawlers from 23 to 41 feet. Today, David’s son, John Livingston, is at the helm of the company.

The 41 maintains the characteristic look of other Rangers but is slightly more contemporary and stylish in its design. Above the waterline of the semi-planing hull, its broad bow adds considerable volume to the bow master. The 41 was specifically designed to incorporate the IPS drives and that involved, in part, adding buoyancy aft to deal with the weight of the engines and pods, which are installed farther aft. Built using fairly standard fiberglass construction, the 41’s hull is solid, hand-laid and rolled fiberglass. The house is attached with screws and adhesive.

FAMILIAR BUT NEW

Boarding is through either of two transom gates from the 5-foot-long swim platform, with sturdy staple rails for added safety, or through a starboard bulwark door. The surprisingly large cockpit is mostly covered by the hardtop, while a removable sunshade can be tied in place

The Ranger Tugs 41 represents a significant jump up from the builder’s next largest model, the 31. It is also the first Ranger to incorporate Volvo Penta IPS pod drives with twin counter-rotating, forward-facing propellers and individually steerable pods.

Tester’s Opinion

to extend protection farther aft. From the innovative idea category come two side-byside swiveling transom seats. A folding teak table is slotted into the front of each, and the settees can swivel 90 degrees, so they face each other, with the tables butting up between them. This setup is versatile and creates a nearly full-size dining table. A large bulkhead window between the galley and cockpit hinges at the top and opens up the two spaces. Add a few high stools and you have a perfect bar counter. Other cockpit features include a built-in ice-maker, a joystick steering station and a gently sloping teak-covered stairway to the flybridge. The rest of the cockpit is open and includes room for a number of folding deck chairs. Steps lead up to the sidedecks, which I found a bit narrow for my liking — 7 inches to starboard and 9 inches to port — because there were no toe rails or outside safety handrails. Of course, the tradeoff is additional interior space. Fortunately, well placed cabin-side handrails help somewhat. The flybridge, in addition to its helm station with duplicate controls, is

The Ranger 41 would make a very comfortable liveaboard vessel or a long- (or short-) range cruiser. It has all the amenities one could wish for, as well as the latest electronics and systems — and it can get its owners where they want to go in a hurry. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2019  31

cupboards. Across from the dinette, a seating area is centered around an L-shaped settee with a small, triangular glass-top table. Sitting here reminded me of hanging out in a cozy lounge. Instead of extending the settee forward to the helm, the builder placed a comfortable recliner with a movable footrest on a heavy round base to take up the space between the two. (It looked a little out of place, but it was the most comfortable seat on the vessel.) A flat-screen, swiveling TV pops up between the salon and companion seating. The helm area and double companion seat are traditional, though the helm features a giant 22-inch Garmin chartplotter as well as two matching 7-inch screens (one for a secondary Garmin display and one for the Volvo Penta engine display). The layout is very clean and functional. A sliding door adjacent to the helm offers both ventilation and easy access to the sidedeck, which can help with shorthanded docking. A wine/water cooler is tucked inboard of the helm seat. Situated in the bow, the master features an island queen berth and an en suite head with a circular plexiglass shower. A small corner nook to starboard and a leather stool would work really well as an office, writing desk or vanity. As well as hullside windows, those bow windows offer the rare chance to actually look directly ahead from below.

GET MOVING

Propulsion is provided by twin 300 hp D4 Volvo Penta IPS400s with joystick steering and optional dynamic positioning. Six house batteries and two start batteries provide 12v power and can be charged from two 145-watt solar panels, while a 3,000-watt inverter provides 110 volts. A 7.6 kw Westerbeke generator with a 50-amp charger provides auxiliary and charging power. Heating was via a Webasto forced-air system, though reverse-cycle air is standard. Stabilization can be provided by an optional Quick gyro system. After an evening at nearby Moby’s Pub, we got underway the next morning. The joystick steering made it a snap to get away, despite the breeze pushing us against the dock. The Ranger Tugs 41 tracked well at all speeds, was stable in turns and exhibited no cavitation during acceleration or turns, thanks in part to the rotating pods. Coffee cups, water bottles and other items left on the countertops stayed in place despite sudden acceleration/deceleration and sharp turns. The turning radius was five or six boat lengths, and time to plane was a reasonable seven or eight seconds. Top speed on test day was 24.8 knots, which is pretty good for a trawler. When it came to fuel consumption, most speeds on plane saw us traveling a little under 1 mpg. Noise in the cabin at 20 knots was a relatively quiet 75 decibels and made for easy conversation. After putting the 41 through its paces, we had a bit of time before my scheduled flight home, so we pulled into a very quiet and picturesque Port Washington on North Pender Island. Arnie Hammerman (of Brand Builder Media, part of the Ranger Tugs PR team) dug up some sausages and eggs and prepared an excellent breakfast. Finally, during one of my boat reviews, I had time to enjoy the boat and the soak in the beautiful setting — and that’s what boating is all about, right?

The Tasman Sea can be a lonely place, and when the wind and currents collaborate, large and dangerous waves can cause cruisers no small amount of trepidation.

We have crossed the Tasman Sea

three times in two different boats, and each time the body of water between New Zealand and Australia has demonstrated why it is among the top five notoriously difficult and dangerous seas in the world.

Our recent crossing in March 2019 aboard Buffalo Nickel was supposed to be our easiest, but we encountered the largest waves we have seen in more than 36,000 miles of cruising in the past 10 years. And it humbled us. So here’s the story about how we were caught by a nearly vertical 25-foot wave directly on our beam, and why we never want that to happen again. This is also a story about the risk of getting complacent and overconfident, and how the ocean will almost always make you pay if she finds you in that state of mind. The 1,100-mile route from the northern tip of New Zealand to Sydney, Australia, took us on a line virtually due west. The forecast from Whangarei to Sydney looked favorable, and our weather router gave us a hearty thumbs up: mild winds (10 to 20 knots) and following seas for the first four days, with some increase in wind to 30 knots on only part of the last day, shifting to the north and hitting us directly on our starboard beam. Beam wind and seas are normally fine with us, because Buffalo Nickel’s FPB design gives us a good ride in all directions. That, combined with our ability to maintain a speed of about 10 knots in all conditions, adds a measure of safety that we appreciate every time we venture offshore. Sea state also looked good to us, with waves, even during the last 24 hours approaching Sydney, predicted at four to six feet, again on our starboard beam and fairly normal for us on a long passage. Our weather router told us to expect current from various directions at up to 1.5 knots. But about halfway through our five-day passage, the barometer dropped a few points and the forecast began to change. Roughly 160 miles from Sydney, our boat speed slowed from our normal 10 knots to 6 to 8 knots, and our boat position on the chartplotter showed us crabbing severely. Buffalo Nickel was pointing north about 30 degrees off our course over ground (pictured above). This was from the effect of ocean current on our boat speed and direction. At the time, we noted the current, and our reaction was annoyance, because the current was slowing our speed substantially and threatening our plan for a daylight arrival in Sydney at the end of a long voyage. This was a huge mistake on our part, because in retrospect we knew that current mixed with wind can create unpredictable and nasty waves. This is the complacency part of the story. The situation then deteriorated further. Soon after, the orientation of the boat on the chartplotter changed to where our boat heading was about 45 degrees south of our course line. The current direction had changed and was now coming from the south. Our speed dropped to as low as 6 knots. Four knots is major ocean current, and still we did not put the pieces together. We knew the wind would build to 30 knots on the last day and that it would be from the north. Duh, wind from the north and current from the south should have told us that trouble was ahead, but we underestimated the Tasman Sea. This is the overconfidence part of the story. 40  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2019

WE WERE PROBABLY HEELED OVER TO ABOUT 35 DEGREES Stay Current

Mariners use the Beaufort Wind Scale to predict wave height. It’s been around for a long time and is a mathematically accurate tool. Winds on our last day were predicted to be 30 knots. Using the scale, we should have anticipated waves of 13 to 19 feet,

based on Force 7 of the scale. We’ve been in 30-knot winds before; in fact, on our first crossing from New Zealand to Fiji we encountered winds of 40 knots and large waves, but they were not affected by current, so we rode up and over them easily. The reality is that despite a lot of time on the water, we rarely encounter significant ocean currents, largely because we just haven’t been to areas where they are common. The Tasman Sea is different. It has a major current called the Eastern Australian

Current, which flows predominantly north to south along the southeast coast of Australia. Our previous Tasman crossings were north of this area, so this passage was our first encounter with this current. We saw a map that showed the current on the day after we arrived in Sydney. We did not have

Before their perilous crossing, the Creightons enjoyed some time at Bay of Islands in New Zealand. Seemingly random ocean currents (opposite page), the fastest of them in red, combine with wind to create potentially dangerous waves.

this information during the passage, which was another major error on our part and a function of not using all the available information at our disposal. It is worth pointing out that the direction of the currents is quite

variable and that the red zones are speeds up to 4 knots. Our path took us directly through the worst zones. As with most stories about things that go really wrong, there were other factors that contributed to our meeting with a monster wave. Taken alone they would be annoying, but when put together in the right combination and in the right sequence, the result can be more than the sum of the individual parts. A moonless night, the end of a five-day passage, Val being sick and unable to take the helm, and Stan being at the helm for 12 hours all contributed to us continuing on a westerly course with waves on our beam opposed by current from the opposite direction. [Note from Val here. Isn’t he sweet to say I was “sick?” That way you picture me off barfing someplace, which, OK, isn’t very attractive but can happen to anyone, right? The reality is that once we started on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride in the middle of that black night, I was anxiety-ridden and incapable of standing my solitary watch. I stayed in the great room with Stan, bringing him food and drink and whatever else, in between sucking my thumb in a fetal position on the settee and avoiding looking at the white foam snaking ominously past our windows at eye level. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.] We could tell by the boat movement that the waves were big, but we could not see them in the dark. Even with the forward floodlights on, we did not appreciate just how bad things had become. When the sun finally began to rise, we were surprised at the sea state around us and finally started to alter our course. We headed south so the swell was behind us, then later aimed more northerly and jogged over the big waves.

+ Sea feature Cruising3.indd 42

7/30/19 11:33 AM

One of the most confusing parts of this story is the way the sea would suddenly settle down and have us thinking the worst was behind us, only to build again dramatically. In retrospect we realize this was due to transiting areas with less current, but at the time we did not appreciate this. As the waves settled in these areas, we turned westerly again, toward Sydney, because we were tired and wanted to get to safety as soon as possible. It was during one of these periods back on our original course that I looked to starboard and saw a large wave approaching directly on our beam. For all of the reasons noted above, we continued on course as we watched the wave approach. Suddenly, with the wave about 50 yards from the boat, it combined with a wave from a slightly different direction and the manageable 15-foot wave became a 25-foot wall of water, nearly vertical and ready to break. We did not have time to turn into this monster and it hit us directly on the right side. As Buffalo Nickel started up the wave face, she listed to the side as far as we’ve ever experienced, and at the top I just waited to see which way we would fall. Luckily for us, we proceeded over the back of the wave.

Learning Lessons

So, what did we learn and what do we now understand better? We knew that windwave height is dependent on wind speed and direction, fetch, ocean bottom depth and contour, and current. We appreciate now that when wave peaks combine, they are 100 percent additive, meaning that two 10-foot swells meeting with their peaks in sync will result in a wave 20 feet high. We understand that opposing current is more dangerous than prior experience had taught us, and current evaluation and monitoring in the future will be a bigger part of our passage planning. If a future course puts us in an orientation with increased risk, we will change course earlier, especially in any condition where the wind speed is greater than 30 knots.   This recent ocean crossing also caused us to go back and rethink what we now know about waves and currents and apply it to our own boat:

»» Weather reports of “significant wave height” that mariners routinely use are the mean of the highest one-third of waves. »» We know that mixed in with these seas will be periodic waves twice as high, and it is not unusual to encounter these large seas as often as every four to 12 hours. Looking at the Beaufort Scale, that means in the same Force 7 conditions we experienced, we can expect to see waves as high as 26 to 38 feet. This means that the concept of “rogue waves” is obsolete. »» We will never again look at 30 knots of wind as “no problem.” »» Major currents contain lots of eddies that can change speed and direction frequently and be well outside the predicted current path. »» Opposing current and wind make seas higher and steeper. »» Steeper waves are more dangerous because they can break. »» To capsize a boat, the wave must be breaking. »» A wave will break if its wave length — peak to peak or trough to trough — is less than seven times its height. In other words, a 10-foot wave with a wave length of less than 70 feet will break. »» It is difficult to estimate wave height or length from inside a boat. »» The position of the boat relative to the wave determines the risk inherent in a breaking wave. Stern- or bow-to the wave face are the safest orientations; beam-to the wave face is the most dangerous. »» Resistance to capsize goes up exponentially with boat size. »» Research models show that many boats will capsize when breaking waves reach a height of 30 percent of boat length. At a wave height of 60 percent of boat length, any boat can capsize.

We can conclude from this that Buffalo Nickel met two of the three criteria needed to capsize: beam-to orientation and wave height greater than 30 percent of boat length. However, the wave that hit us was not breaking. We were very fortunate. We believe, since the wave face was almost vertical, the wave was very close to breaking. Our boat design improved our risk profile, as FPB boats are designed and built with all of the above considered. Working with our boat’s designer, Steve Dashew, after this episode, we concluded that we were probably heeled over to about 35 degrees. The boat’s stability curve peaks somewhere in the 75- to 95-degree range, thus we stayed upright. Even knowing this, we never want to meet a wave like this again. And we will never again get complacent or assume we are safe just because we have the best boat in the world. The sea does not care.

BE YOU A RAG-BAGGER OR STINK-POTTER, a common thread joins all boat owners: rope. The quality and variety of rope available is constantly evolving and growing, so it’s more important than ever to be able to choose the right rope for a particular job. Despite the seemingly endless number of polysyllabic words that rope manufacturers use to describe their products, selecting the right one boils down to three things: • Material • Method of construction • What exactly it is you want the rope to do

CONS T RUC T ION Rope is the generic term for cordage more than 1 inch in circumference, while smaller stuff is known as cord, twine, line or string. Finer still is thread and double yarn. Rope is commonly used to describe bulk material, such as a spool of rope at the chandlery, while line is generally defined as rope cut from said spool and used for a specific task on board, such as a spring line. For the purpose of this article, the terms rope and line are interchangeable. Most lines found aboard boats today are made of synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester and polypropylene, compared to 40 years ago when organics such as

hemp, sisal and cotton ruled the waves. Synthetic lines have numerous advantages over their organic counterparts, not the least of which are increased strength and resistance to rot. The variety of synthetic lines available also allows boaters to better match line characteristics with function. Ironically, natural fiber rope, once the mainstay of thrifty sailors everywhere, is now often more expensive than manmade fiber rope because there’s simply not as much of it made these days. Basic construction for synthetic and organic ropes begins with fibers, which are twisted into yarns, then twisted or plied into strands, and finally twisted or braided into rope. It’s that last step that determines how the fibers lay or align with the finished line and thus defines the properties of the line itself. For example, in a twisted or laid rope such as threestrand (the traditional form of manufacture since the early days of natural rope) fibers are not aligned with the line’s axis. This means the line will have more stretch than braided or parallel core, since the fibers straighten out as the rope comes under tension. An easy way to picture this is to imagine how the coils of a Slinky straighten or stretch out when pulled — exactly what a twisted rope does (although hopefully not as much). Braided rope, on the other hand, has more fiber in the line’s cross section, translating to less stretch and consequently greater strength. Braided rope is torque-free,

LEARN THE ROPES

PLOT LINES has good abrasion resistance and is less susceptible to kinking than traditional laid rope. Plaited or single-braid rope is the simplest and most prevalent type of braided rope; however, other common types include balanced double-braided (a braided cover over a braided core of the same material), core-loaded double-braid (braided cover over a braided, lower-stretch core of different material) and parallel core (a braided cover surrounding a bundled core oriented parallel to the line’s axis).

While exotic manmade rope-making material seemingly crops up daily, the three standbys remain nylon, polyester and polypropylene. Nylon is the strongest, followed closely by polyester and finally polypropylene. Nylon’s strength, abrasion resistance and elasticity make it an ideal choice for applications involving shock loads, such as anchor and docklines. This same characteristic however, makes it unsuitable for halyards and other uses where minimal stretch is desired. Polyester combines the desirable characteristics of strength and minimal stretch, making it a good all-around line suited for most purposes on board. It also has good abrasion resistance, doesn’t shrink when wet and maintains flexibility in high temperatures. Purchased pre-stretched, it’s ideally suited for halyards, sheets and control lines on sailboats. The lightest and lowest strength of the three is polypropylene. It’s inexpensive and it floats, making it the rope of choice for dinghy painters, ski tow ropes, mooring pennants and other applications where a submerged line might snag in the propeller.

The final word on any good investment is maintenance and care. 46

BE YOND T HE B A S IC S After the three basic types, choices grow more complex — and expensive. Times were a lot simpler when all boaters had to remember was to use nylon for anchor and docklines and polyester for halyards. Now buzzwords such as

Chafe remains by far the worst enemy of any rope. Visually inspect the masthead, blocks, guides, chocks, cleats, windlasses, etc., for burrs or sharp edges. Tape

all cotter pins and split rings in turnbuckles and blocks (using rigging tape for this job, nothing else). Frequently wash lines with fresh water to remove dirt and salt, which can cause excessive wear and

premature failure. Soak lines in warm water with a mild detergent (some boaters recommend soap powder instead), and while you’re at it, live it up a little by adding a dash of fabric softener to make them nice and soft.

High-tech lines have quirks just like their low-tech brethren, and some of these peculiarities cause them to perform radically different under otherwise familiar situations. Knots are a good example. Knots that have served sailors well for centuries can severely damage high-modulus line to the point of early failure. Knots weaken all ropes because they distort the fibers; a bowline, for example, reduces the strength of polyester or nylon line by as much as 40 percent. That same bowline can cut a high-modulus line’s strength by 70 percent or more, leaving little or no safety margin. This means that all termination points in high-modulus lines should either be splices or end fittings instead of knots.

• Very slippery • May creep under sustained load

high-modulus, ultra- and high-molecular-weight polyethylene (HMWPE), aramid, and liquid crystal polymer (LCP) define the cutting edge of rope technology. The overall benefit of high-modulus — a fancy way of saying low-stretch — lines is that it takes a much smaller line to achieve the same strength, saving weight not only on line but in the gear needed to control them, such as smaller blocks and winches. A good example of just

Rinse them thoroughly and then hang them up to dry. If you do this at the end of the season, the lines will be clean and ready to go in spring. Although synthetic fibers have pretty good chemical

belowdecks where possible. Always begin coiling a line at the end that’s made fast, which allows any twists or kinks to be removed at the loose end. Most laid ropes are right-handed, so coils should be counter clockwise

to ensure that lines play out smoothly. Placing a kinked line under load weakens and damages it, often resulting in hard spots caused by excessive friction heat that can literally fuse filaments together. SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2019

BLIND CHANNEL RESORT

Visiting Blind Channel Resort is always a family affair. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP

DURING THE SUMMER OF 1969 the Richter family — Edgar and Annemarie, and their son, Phil — were cruising their 30-foot boat, Pamar, through the area’s pristine coastal rainforest and stopped in Blind Channel on West Thurlow Island, B.C., for a loaf of bread. Edgar saw the “For Sale” sign and was immediately intrigued. After much family discussion, the Richters packed up their home in Vancouver and moved to Blind Channel (blindchannel.com) in 1970. Using his background in engineering and construction, Edgar worked tirelessly to transform what had been a group of old buildings into his vision of a beautiful resort, which now spans four generations of the Richter family.

Phil had a choice: continue his studies or join his parents in their endeavor. He decided to take a break and lend a hand at building the business — a break that became permanent. Phil met his wife, Jennifer, during a visit to Vancouver in 1972, and she joined him at the resort the following year. Their lives continued to change with the arrival of their two sons, Eliot and William, in

THE RESORT

101

We’ve visited the resort many times while cruising to and from the Broughton Island area and have always enjoyedGoat our stay. Only accessible by boat or seaplane, Island Blind Channel is known as the “cruising crossroads” for anyone boating north of Desolation Sound to the Broughton Islands. It is located one mile from Cordero Channel and three miles off Johnstone Strait, which makes it a convenient layover. It’s also known by generations of boaters for its hospitality, thanks to the Richters. Boaters should know two things when they visit Blind Channel. The first is to slow down to no-wake speed once they enter Mayne Passage. This was a lesson we learned the hard way, with much embarrassment, when, on our first visit many years ago, our wake was carried by the current all the way into the dock, rocking the boats. The second is to be conscious of the direction of the current. When visitors hail the resort on VHF Channel 66A for a slip assignment, the friendly dockhand will provide a docking assignment, a heads-up on current direction — it flows perpendicular to the docks — and meet their boat at the slip to assist with lines. Many boaters prefer timing their arrival at near slack current. Boat owners will find 2,400 feet of sturdy moorage with 30- and 50-amp power, limited Wi-Fi, and clean UV-treated spring water for filling the boat’s tank. The fuel dock offers gas, diesel and propane. Reservations are highly recommended during July and August. Laundry and shower facilities are conveniently located close to the docks, and onboard garbage can be burned in a commercial incinerator for a minimal fee per pound. There is a well-stocked general store, gift shop, post office with mail plane service twice a week and agency liquor store, all rolled into one. Fresh produce is delivered twice a week during the summer. The store is where visitors will find Jennifer’s freshly baked bread year-round and cinnamon buns, muffins and cookies in July and August. On sunny days we enjoy sitting and relaxing on the seaside patio that overlooks the docks and Mayne Passage. A large gazebo with a vista of the marina can

EAT Annemarie was the driving force behind the elegant Cedar Post Inn Restaurant, open from mid-May until Labor Day. The unique mosaics and wall hangings she created are composed of items collected from local beaches. Before the Richters built the restaurant, Annemarie, who was the chef for the first 12 years — many of her signature German recipes are still being prepared today — would serve meals to visitors in their home. Before she died, Annemarie greeted the boaters and often sat down at the table to chat. During our 2018 visit we enjoyed a delicious dinner in the newly renovated restaurant. In the During certain times of the off-season it had been revamped with a fresh year, salmon fishing can be coat of paint, a refurbished floor, varnished excellent. posts and new lamps but maintained the ambiance Annemarie worked so hard to create. We enjoyed German fisch suppe — Arlene ordered the catch of the day (halibut) and I the Blind Channel schnitzel — excellently prepared by chef Drew Noble and his team. Also new for 2018: the restaurant served breakfast and lunch for the first time. A big hit each summer are the four evenings Blind Channel hosts dinner with live music. Check the resort’s website for a complete schedule of events.

GET OUTDOORS To work up an appetite for dinner, we hike the miles of nearby Forest Management trails that lead away from the resort and into the wilderness of West Thurlow Island. They offer varying degrees of difficulty. One pleasant loop climbs in elevation through a 90-year-old second-growth forest that includes an old-growth Western red cedar that is more than 800 years old and 16 feet in diameter. Farther along, the next loop intersects with logging roads PNW-4

that meander up the valley and around the island. A third trail leads out to a view point that overlooks Mayne Passage. Water-taxi service to Discovery Harbour in Campbell River is available three times a week, providing boaters a convenient way to get errands done in town without having to detour all the way into Campbell River with their boat. With all the natural beauty and wildlife the area has to offer, personal tours and expeditions are also available. During certain times of the year, salmon fishing can be excellent, and lingcod and rockfish are always available. The resort can help boaters who are interested in a guided fishing trip or need some tackle and bait. Lucky anglers might even be able to have Chef Drew prepare their catch of the day for dinner. Non-boaters can now enjoy Blind Channel Resort thanks to the addition of a pair of new cottages. Each has two spacious bedrooms, a self-contained full kitchen, a bathroom with a heated floor and a covered deck with a barbecue. Visitors can enjoy a stunning view of the marina, Mayne Passage, East Thurlow Island and the Coast Mountains beyond. Another improvement in the works is a water-powered power-generation system north of the marina. When complete, the water generator will provide about one-third of the power for the marina. This is part of an overall plan to lower the power generation requirements from diesel generators. Several floatplane airlines service Blind Channel, making the resort a great location for guests to join or depart a cruise midway.

FÊTING A LANDMARK SCHOONER

THANKS TO A 10-year, $2.5 million restoration effort, the

schooner Adventuress is ready to teach and encourage another generation of Pacific Northwest youth. More than 1,000 young people per year are taken out on the water and introduced to maritime programs through involvement with Adventuress, whether they are community college students looking for credits, public school children brought aboard by a science teacher or teens in the juvenile detention system being shown a better way. The 133-foot-long ship, which is listed as a National Historic Landmark, sails around Puget Sound every day from March through October and has earned accolades such as Best Experience (Heart of Seattle Awards, 2019) and an Excellence in Education and Outreach (Port of Seattle, 2019). Operated by Sound Experience for the last 30 years, the 100-year-old schooner is home to a full-time crew of 12 educators and has hosted more than 30,000 people over the course of the last three decades. Many of the programs aboard Adventuress offer scholarships to young people, and all of the programs require financial resources. To help subsidize the mission, Sound Experience hosts a fundraising gala every year, which raises about one-quarter of the cash needed to keep the programs afloat. This year, Party for Adventuress takes place Oct. 12 at Bell Harbor Conference Center, Pier 66, and Sound Experience is looking for gala sponsors, table hosts, silent auction item donors and volunteers. Any person or organization interested in participating in the gala should visit SoundExp. org/party-for-adventuress/.

than 35 years in Orange County (as the Lido Boat Show), Duncan McIntosh had high hopes for an L.A. site and has found that the location is a draw for boating folks from L.A., Ventura and Orange counties, and the Inland Empire. It’s about an hour’s drive from so many locations.

“We are able to draw people who might have viewed a trip to Newport as too far,” McIntosh said. “And the harbor and its surrounding area have more going for it that it used to.”

Dealers are on deck and ready to play matchmaker between boat and buyer. And McIntosh knows the area has long been a draw for boaters, as his family kept a boat in the Wilmington area when he was a kid. “I’m pretty familiar with it,” he added. Even in an age of online listings and

New and used models, both power and sail, from Southern California’s bestknown brokerages will be on display, and brokers are eager to chat with veteran and novice buyers.

YouTube video walkthroughs, boat shows have retained a sense of validity and must-attend panache. We asked McIntosh, who has been doing this for 47 years, why that is. “The appeal of boat shows, especially for people just thinking about getting into boating, is they can go to a show, and in an afternoon they can see everything they might be able to see otherwise without spending six months traveling all over the place in Southern California, going to one dealer after another,” he said. “And half the time they’re losing interest because it’s such a task to see all the stuff. Here, you can compare them side by side, talk to the brokers and ask specific questions and get straight answers.”

ON LOCATION Trawlers, cruisers, sportfishers, sailboats, catamarans, motoryachts, tenders and paddle craft will be on display, as will the booths of dozens of exhibitors whose specialties include sailing lessons, guided cruising trips to Mexico, outboard motors, onboard accessories, marine financing, yacht brokerage services and more. More than 60 dealers will participate in the four-day event, too, including Naos Yachts, California Yacht Co., Denison Yachting, Hampton Yacht Group of California, Newport Yachts, Long Beach Yacht Sales, Silver Seas Yachts, South Coast Yachts, West Coast Yachts and many more. They will display boats at about every price point, as well as vessels tailored toward every boater’s experience level, including kayaks and inflatable paddleboards. “Dealers are on deck and ready to play matchmaker between boat and buyer,” said Tim Baker, the show manager. “Plus, we have more than 32,000 square feet of dock space, a shuttle service and ample parking.”

Another unique San Pedro establishment to patronize while visiting the show is the San Pedro Fish Market, which has endured as the only remaining business in the soon-to-be renovated Ports O’ Call Village. Try to visit this local hotspot early, as there are usually long lines and big crowds. San Pedro Fish Market is practically in the water. Visitors can order seafood and have it cooked on site. ASK A BROKER

BROKERAGE ADVICE

Broker #1

The big mistake I’ve seen a few times is choosing to bypass a survey. Someone will think he knows the brand or the boat’s not old enough to need a survey, and elect to not get one done. It’s a mistake. It’s important to get one on every used boat, because insurance companies and lenders want to have a survey to help them in their decision-making process, and a professional surveyor’s report is very valuable. The surveyors are the professionals who will report the truth about the boat’s condition and help prepare the buyer for ownership.

Broker #2

What I find with most first-time buyers — as with pretty much all boat buyers — is that it’s a very emotional decision. People look at boats a couple of different ways. What I have seen lately is people look for a bargain or even a steal. I’ve had buyers tell me they’re looking for a steal. They’ll go for the deal, which is satisfying emotionally in the short term, instead of for the right boat for them. But that can lead to a bad purchase. What I try to guide people to is the right boat. They’ll come into it wanting a boat with a bridge, but they’ll find a steal on a cruiser, and what happens is they keep

SEPTEMBER’S QUESTION:

What is a mistake buyers make that a broker can steer them clear of? the boat for a year or two and end up buying a bridge boat. I encourage people to fall in love with a certain kind of boat first and then go to the market and look for it. Something else buyers do that can lead to a bad “good” deal is find a boat that looks

is supposed to be fun; spending all your time fixing stuff doesn’t make it fun. As an example, a boater in San Diego takes his boat to Catalina for a week. When he gets there, a 10-cent O-ring on the toilet goes out. He’s coming home to get it fixed and the week is ruined. That may or may not have been discovered on closer inspection, but it highlights the point that the little things count. A tiny thing can ruin your day. I always encourage people to buy the newest boat they can afford. If that means going a few feet shorter but getting a newer boat, that’s the direction I encourage them to go. Most of the expenses of owning a

I always encourage people to buy the newest boat they can afford. pretty without considering what they can’t see. A good broker knows that 50 percent or more of the value of a boat is below the decks — stuff that people caught up in the emotion of the process don’t look at. Say there’s a 1985 model that’s been in salt water that whole time. It may look pretty up top, but there could be big problems below, with things such as pumps, through-hulls, filters and more. I’ve seen people buy a deal and then work on the thing all the time. Boating

boat — slip fees, washing, cleaning, fuel, etc. — are going to be similar no matter the age of the boat, so going with a newer model doesn’t add much to the ongoing post-purchase costs, and it will likely decrease maintenance costs. Once people own a boat, they understand the reality of it and are able to make decisions that aren’t purely emotional — though emotion will always be a part of boat buying.

LEARN THE ROPES

The quality and variety of rope available coninued from page 47

HMWPE lines get their strength using the same principle as the lowly plastic shopping bag: molecular alignment. During the manufacturing process, molecules align themselves in the same direction as the load, making them much stronger than random orientation, which is why those bag handles seem to stretch forever without breaking. In the case of HMWPE lines (Dyneema, Spectra, Novabraid and others), that initial stretching is done during manufacture, meaning it doesn’t stretch when first placed under load by the customer. HMWPE is a strong, lightweight, low-stretch material good for running rigging, as well as running backstays and other applications where light weight and low stretch are critical. It also resists weather and abrasion, doesn’t soak up water and doesn’t shrink. The downside is that it’s very

50

IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING

slippery, and the core is subject to creeping under sustained loading, meaning it will slowly stretch without returning to its original length. Aramids are actually a family of nylons used to make anything from bulletproof vests to puncture-resistant tires. Popular brand names include Kevlar (DuPont’s trade name for aramid), Twaron and Technora. In addition to their high strength, aramid fibers possess minimal stretch and low creep characteristics. Downsides include poor UV resistance and susceptibility to abrasion, particularly when they’re subjected to high bending loads as in blocks or cleats, making them best for applications such as standing rigging. Liquid crystal polymers are thermoplastic fibers with exceptional strength and rigidity (pound for pound five times that of steel) and roughly 15 times the fatigue resistance of aramid. A common trade name for LCP

line is Vectran, which is currently the only commercially available melt spun LCP fiber available. LCP lines have exceptionally low stretch characteristics and no creep. Water absorption is low and resistance to abrasion and flex fatigue (failure due to repeated sharp bending) is excellent; however, the lines have low UV resistance. They’re best suited for uses such as running rigging that can be covered or removed and stored away from sunlight. Though nylon, polyester and polypropylene still serve the average boater well, there are places where these newer lines can come in handy, even for cruising boats. For instance, any situation where you want lines to resist stretching — reef lines are a good example — is a good place for something like Amsteel. It’s up to you to decide whether the benefits gained make the cost worth it, because one characteristic all of the newer, high-tech lines share is cost.

* Estimated APR (Annual Percentage Rate) based on 5 year loan term; individual rate may vary based on loan amount, loan term, vehicle use, model year, and type of boat. Subject to consumer loan program requirements and credit approval. Rates and terms may vary with market conditions and are subject to change without notice. Certain fees, closing costs, and restrictions may apply. APR applied to the loan is the APR in effect on the date the application is received and is valid for 30 days. APRs may vary with loan term. Boat must be 1999 model year or newer; for boat model year 1999 to 2008, add .25% to above rate. Maximum loan term based on loan amount. Maximum loan amount is calculated using an advance percentage determined by FICO score and multiplied by NADA base wholesale value with adds; if not listed in NADA, then multiplied by 80% of BUC low retail value. Other rates with different loan terms are available. See our website for rates and terms for financing live-aboards and loan amounts below $25,000. Example of a recreational use boat loan: A $65,000 loan for 5 years with an APR of 4.59% has 60 monthly payments of $1,214.46 each. Member FDIC. Equal Housing Lender.

THIS MONTH:

Not until they were passed by an abandoned sailboat — adrift, with no sails up — did Larry relent and call in a more appropriate towing service. (Yes, we realize the man in the dinghy is facing the wrong direction.) Send us your best name for our boat. YOURS FREE! COSTA SUNGLASSES Whether you choose the Spearo style with a matte reef frame and blue mirror lenses (pictured) or one of Costa’s many other styles (costadelmar.com), you’ll have your choice of frame width, frame type and lens color, to create a pair of sunglasses that’s all you.

HOW TO PLAY: The first person to submit the best boat name

will win one pair of Costa sunglasses, valued at up to $279. Submissions are due by September 15.
