RESOLUTIONS & MILESTONES WELCOME TO 2018, EVERYONE. All of us here at Sea hope 2017 was a great boating year for you and that 2018 will be even better. I’m sure many of you have a list of resolutions that, if followed, will make you wiser, healthier, wealthier, happier and better at something. The big qualifier there is “if followed.” As boat owners, most of you likely have a resolution or two tied to boating. Update the electronics. Visit a new marina. Go farther than you’ve gone before. Etc. In our story that starts on page 44, “Smarter by Summer,” Zuzana Prochazka looks at a dozen ways people can become better boaters by opening day of the 2018 boating season. From practicing docking and anchoring to taking a deep dive into what your electronics can really do to taking a diesel management course to studying the rules of the road, her suggestions will help newbies and old salts improve at least one skill over the winter months. You might even say she’s helped write a bunch of resolutions for boat owners. Check it out. On another calendar-related note, Sea turns 110 years old this year. From its humble Seattle roots as Pacific Motor Boat in 1908, the publication has undergone name and ownership changes (though only four owners total), but it is still the voice of Pacific Coast boating. Sea, in one iteration or another, has been informing and entertaining West Coast readers since before IBM revolutionized business machines (1911), since before GMC started rolling cars off its assembly line (1911) — though not before Ford changed transportation forever (1903) — since before Boeing took to the sky (1916), since before Reader’s Digest started condensing classics (1922), and since well before Paul and Betty Pink started serving hot dogs at a self-named Los Angeles eatery (1939). How’s this for a shared birth year? Pacific Motor Boat and Hacker-Craft were both founded in 1908. To keep a magazine relevant and vibrant for that long, the staff has always relied on readers for feedback and story suggestions, so keep sending your thoughts and ideas. Sometimes, the right reader with the right story at the right time becomes a writer. If one of your resolutions is to visit somewhere new this year, and if that cruise lives up to or exceeds expectations, let us know about it. We’re always looking for good first-person cruising stories. Here’s to a prosperous and boating-friendly 2018.

A CAT WITH MORE
LAGOON’S NEW FLAGSHIP POWER CATAMARAN HAS AMENITIES AND SPACE TO SPARE. AT 78 FEET LONG AND 36 FEET WIDE (plus an inch in both dimensions), the Lagoon Seventy 8 catamaran offers a lot of space and a lot of options for how to use the space. Three-, four- and five-cabin configurations are available, and the aft half of the port hull has options that include a movie theater, a conference room, a massage room or a game room. Owners will like the fact the master stateroom comes with a personal beach — part of the hullside folds out to create a platform that hovers just above the waterline, for at-anchor relaxation away from the rest of the yacht. The balance of the staterooms include island berths, en suite heads and panoramic hull windows. Forward on the main deck is a 322-square-foot platform that can accommodate sunning, sitting, napping and even dancing, if it’s that kind of party. At the transom, each hull has a swim platform, and a Tenderlift platform can fill the space between them, to create a
large aft beach. Up on the flybridge is the yacht’s helm, room for several more people, and — depending on the plan chosen — a Jacuzzi tub or another vast sun lounge. Even given the Seventy 8’s wide sidedecks, the main cabin has plenty of room for a salon and a dining table for eight people. Forward of all that is more seating that connects with the foredeck seating area when the door is open. Standard power comes from twin Volvo D11 510 hp diesels; twin
John Deere N13 580 hp diesels are optional and deliver a top speed around 19 knots. The yacht’s range at slow speed is more than 4,000 miles with 2,246 gallons of diesel. The view is expansive from pretty much everywhere aboard, and at anchor the Seventy 8’s party potential is epic. And given Lagoon’s experience with long-range sailing cats, this yacht should handle longer cruises without too much effort. Lagoon, Cata-Lagoon.com

SEMANTICS OF THE SEA
When is a boat a ship? While the two terms are technically synonymous, the military rule of thumb says a boat can be put on a ship but a ship can’t be put on a boat. Generally, a ship is a larger boat, but it also depends what it is used is for. Did we solve anything?

Customs Requirements Relaxed The Canadian government has relaxed the rules for U.S. boaters crossing the Canadian border by water. The Conveyance Presentation and Report Requirements Modernization Act (Bill S-233), which received Royal Assent in June, changes the requirement for when boaters have to report to Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers. Instead of calling Canadian Customs to report in as soon as they arrive in Canadian waters, U.S. boaters need only report to customs when they anchor or arrive on Canadian shores. A day outing that involves no anchoring or “contact with a conveyance” can be conducted without a customs check-in. Canadian boaters still have to report to U.S. Customs, as there is no reciprocity yet.
ON AUG. 20, 2017, THE Bay Arcade at the Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Harbor shut its doors for good. Since the 1940s the Bay Arcade was a noisy, fun and memorable place for locals, visitors and boaters alike. The old arcade area will be converted into an expanded donut shop. Fear not SoCal boaters, because other nearby attractions will remain open, such as the Ferris wheel, the nearby Balboa Arcade, and the many restaurants and boutiques in the area. BOATER CARD
MEXICO REPORT
By CAPT. PAT RAINS
My resolution for 2018 is to master 10 new nautical verbs — including “remolcar” — and to improve my future tense. Mark the Hull’s Sling Spots. Last time the boatyard hauled our friends’ 53-foot Selene, it took 45 minutes (and two false starts) to correctly position the Travelift’s fore and aft sling straps under the hull before they were able to hoist it — safely and levelly — out of the water. Stabilizer fins, transducers, throughhull fittings, keel coolers and other modifications below the waterline can be damaged if they’re squashed by the boat’s dry weight resting on those straps. Once the yard got it right, we temporarily marked the four correct sling locations in chalk on the side of the hull, right below the hull-to-deck joint, two on each side, fore and aft. After the bottom work was complete but before the boat was put back in the water, we replaced the four chalk marks with four tiny painted graphic arrows. The yard can do this with topside paint or a vinyl graphic material such as that used for boat names.
RESOLUTIONS THAT WORK
Make 2018 the best cruising year ever by implementing some or all of these boating oaths. WHEN OCCASIONALLY FINDING MYSELF stuck in very uncomfortable sea conditions, I’ve vowed not to make the same idiotic choices that led to the situation in the first place. Boaters know how it goes: I promise I will never again start an offshore passage on a Friday. Or, I will never again let a guest’s airline reservation determine my boat’s course and speed. Or, I will never again … You get the picture. This year, as always, we get to start with a clean slate, so here are some potential resolutions and promises for Not-Always-Prudent-Mariners, to preserve us from uncomfortable and icky situations.
Speak More Spanish. Using Skype and a new online service called Speak Shop (speakshop.com), people can take private one-on-one Spanish lessons. Speak Shop’s certified online teachers are all native speakers in Guatemala. Users can set their own daily or weekly schedule and customize a curriculum to focus on specific needs — nautical terminology, boating conversations, weather reports, fishing jargon, etc. For example, who knows what “remolcador” means? One was crossing my path in dense fog once and happened to be towing a barge at the end of a 1,000-foot cable. Yikes! This was one of many situations that encouraged me to learn more Spanish.
Bless the Dinghy. Especially in Mexican waters, a dinghy replaces the family minivan and becomes the primary errand-runner — bless its heart. This January, promise to bless your dinghy and outboard with an MPT: a major preservation treatment. Clean and buff the inflatable collar with

Dinghies get blessed in January at the start of winter cruising season in Mexico. Give yours a major preservation treatment and a new set of canvas covers. Note how many cruising dinghies are RIBs with covers (left). On the ramp, kill the eggs of invasive quagga and zebra mussels (bottom left). Clean, drain and dry are the steps. But white vinegar and dish detergent are excellent products to kill invasive species on lines, toys and boards.
Kill the Quagga. A single female zebra mussel can release 1 million eggs each year, so trailerboaters should promise to kill the invaders — quagga and zebra mussels — each time they retrieve their boat in Mexican or U.S. waters. At the top of the ramp, scrape off any mud and plant life, then hose out and drain livewells, the anchor locker and all wet compartments. To make sure invasive species don’t tag along to the next launch, try these steps: Give the boat a hot-water (140 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) high-pressure washdown followed by five days of desiccation (drying out). A 20-minute bath of 100 percent white vinegar is recommended for gear such as docklines, nets, tow ropes, skis, wakeboards, SUPs, inner tubes and inflatable toys. (Splash straight vinegar over contaminated parts of the rig as well.) A 40-minute bath in a detergent solution kills them dead: two and a half gallons of water with two cups of dish detergent. Both baths are easy to manage in a driveway, but folks who store their boat and rig elsewhere should resolve to always have on hand a one-gallon jug of white vinegar or a bottle of dish detergent and a five-gallon bucket and brush.
whichever preservation treatment the manufacturer recommends. Scrape all the tiny calcified worm cases off the rigid bottom, and sand them lightly so they don’t cut anyone’s bare hands during dinghy launch and retrieval. Scrape and sand those nasty worms off the dinghy’s outboard prop and lower end. Service the outboard and replace worn parts. Have canvas covers made, to protect the flexible material from tropical sun damage and keep the sizzling material from scorching bare legs and feet. If the dinghy already has covers, now’s the time to desalt them by soaking them in fresh water overnight and hanging them flat to dry. While the canvas is drying, treat each set of snaps with a Q-tip soaked in a rust inhibitor such as LPS or WD-40. Doing so preserves the life of window screens’ snaps and toggles too.
More Fun, Less Work. Boat owners should resolve to spend at least half
their time on the boat having fun, not just working on maintenance projects. A January voyage out to an island to have fun on board is also a chance to improve one’s anchoring skills. Anchoring somewhere overnight where there’s likely to be a change of tides and current, maybe a change of wind direction too, will give boaters the chance to feel through the chain if they got the anchor well set the first time. To see if they swing too close to shore or other boats overnight. To see if a stern anchor would have helped. To set, monitor and measure the effectiveness of the radar perimeter alarm. To see if they need to add a rubber snubber to quiet chain noise in the V-berth. Deepen Cultural Awareness. For boaters already in Mexico, Jan. 6 is Day of the Kings, Dia de los Reyes, when children receive guests and gifts in parks and at backyard parties. In traditional rural villages, gifts received from Santa on Dec. 24 might not be opened until Jan. 6. Boating visitors are welcome to join Dia de los Reyes street parades, where locals carry statues from the church to a festive plaza. Along the parade route revelers can buy holiday foods made by the church ladies and artisan gifts at street-market stalls. Boaters who buy a wreath-shaped Rosca de Reyes (Kings’ Bread coffee cake with a baby Jesus figurine baked inside) and share it with locals who invite them in are sure to pump up their cultural status. As the bread is divided and shared with each person present, someone will get the baby, which means he is supposed to host an Easter party. Finally, boaters should anchor off a remote panga village during January, go ashore and try out their best Spanish on the first person they meet. Wish everyone Feliz Ano Nuevo en Dos Mil Diese Ocho: Happy New Year 2018.

The record snowfall during the winter of 2016-2017 had Mt. Baker (below) practically glowing during a late-winter outing. The long winter didn’t, however, discourage the Pacific Northwest’s animal life, including these nesting purple martins at West Sound Marina (left), from emerging once spring took hold.

SMALL DOSES
S PRI N G
Small Doses AN EXTENDED CRUISE IS NOT REQUIRED FOR A FULL BOATING SEASON. It’s the middle of winter. Holiday season is in the rearview mirror. Boat shows are opening this month. Spring is still a few months away. But many boaters are looking forward to the coming boating season. Arlene and I are also establishing our plans for the 2018 cruising season. BY DEANE HISLOP
BOATING IS ONE of the life’s great pleasures, and nowhere is that more true than in the Pacific Northwest, where there is a variety of seaside villages and hamlets, marine parks and secluded anchorages, and wildlife and sea life. No matter where in the Pacific Northwest, excellent boating is nearby. One sure way to get fired up about a new season is to look back at the previous season. The all-time record dry spell and temperatures the Pacific Northwest experienced made for one of the best boating seasons, weather-wise, in a long time. The downside, for us anyway, was that family commitments and plans to remodel our house ensured we were unable to spend as many days out on the water as in years past, and our outings didn’t take us far from home. As a result, we were reminded of how wonderful our home area is. Boating adventures were limited to daytrips or short overnight outings in the San Juan Islands.
02
While we had limited time on the water, we were able to recharge our batteries with the occasional dose of salt air. Besides enjoying the fantastic weather, we experienced wildlife encounters, nearly empty state marine parks, a holiday and a special occasion on the water, a little fishing and crabbing, and some fantastic meals. We attended a couple of outdoor concerts, visited with friends and met new ones, and escaped the stress and chaos of the remodel. Everything served as a reminder that it doesn’t take an extended weeks-long cruise to enjoy boating. The good news coming out of this past cruising season is our home remodel is complete and we have continued our boating through the winter, weather permitting. With no extended trip north last year, we missed seeing our friends up the British Columbia coast, and now we yearn for a longer cruise to venture further. We are currently going through withdrawal, and anticipation for this spring is almost unbearable. We have already begun planning for our departure, and we are looking forward to creating new memories, meeting new friends and getting reacquainted with old ones, encountering wildlife, visiting marinas and secluded anchorages, and experiencing new things. The moral of the story, as they say, is regardless of where you live in the Pacific Northwest or elsewhere, quality boating can be enjoyed no matter how much time you have. Everything served as a reminder that it doesn’t take an extended weeks-long cruise to enjoy boating.
The summer of 2017 was different than a lot of summers in that smoke from B.C. and eastern Washington wildfires was thick at times during a fire season that set records. The fires didn’t dampen the festivities at the many seaside communities that sponsor free outdoor concerts during the boating season (inset).

08 FALL
During the fall in the PNW, one can wake up to breathless, glass-flat mornings (left) that encourage a little more time on the hook, or to foggy conditions that obscure the shoreline that’s not very far away and are a little more adamant about a boat spending more time on the hook (below).
Regardless of where you live in the Pacific Northwest or elsewhere, quality boating can be enjoyed no matter how much time you have.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ANTENNA PLACEMENT Mounting marine antennas can feel overwhelming.
THE PROLIFERATION OF ELECTRONIC systems that populate the wheelhouse
of today’s recreational vessels have one thing in common: most of them have an antenna connected. This can cause a shortage of topside real estate for mounting all the antennas in a way that they don’t cause radio frequency interference (RFI) with one another. The smaller the vessel, the more difficult it is to find sufficient space to mount all the antennas. The good news is that the smaller the boat,
the less cabling an owner will use in connecting an instrument to its antenna, which means it will be easier to install and will have less
attenuation of the signals. What constitutes appropriate separation for boat antenna to ensure interference from one system to another? The answer for proper vertical and horizontal antenna separation can be complex, but there are a few rules that will help ensure maximum performance. What we see in the photo above is really pretty marginal, at least based on NMEA’s own installation standards. According to the standard, satellite TV antennas should be three feet away from VHF antennas and GPS antennas, and VHF antennas need to be no less than three feet away from GPS antennas. So, with the pictured installation, it looks like we might have an issue with the GPS and VHF separation, and the sat TV is a little tight with both the VHF and GPS. This is a common problem due to limited amount of real estate on most boats. So, do we have a problem here? Maybe, maybe not. Antenna isolation or separation is a key consideration when laying out an antenna field. Sufficient isolation is required to ensure that interference between systems is kept within acceptable levels — levels at

which the equipment can operate effectively. A number of techniques for achieving isolation between systems exist. The two most common and straightforward approaches are horizontal and vertical separation. Horizontal antenna separation is when the amount of signal coupled from one antenna to another is reduced as a function of distance. One way of achieving this isolation is through antenna separation in the horizontal plane. Vertical antenna separation is a more efficient method of achieving the required isolation in space-constrained environment. Vertical separation provides significantly more isolation than horizontal separation. Inverted mounting of an antenna is another method often used to conserve tower space or to provide RF isolation (typically utilized for omnidirectional whip antennas). It will help in the proper placement

at a reasonable distance from any VHF, which should not be a problem because VHF antennas should be mounted as high as possible due to the line-of-sight range restrictions, and with VHF, height is more important than power output. The AIS system works on two channels in the VHF frequency range, and in order to receive or transmit AIS information it’s

First we need to know that VHF and GPS can both interfere with each other and that radar and HF can interfere with just about anything electronic. necessary for the AIS unit to be connected to a VHF antenna. One option is to fit a VHF splitter, which allows both the VHF radio and the AIS to use the boat’s main VHF antenna. The other option is to fit a second VHF antenna, which is then connected to the AIS. Any VHF antenna can be used, although some antennas are “AIS tuned” to get maximum gain on the two AIS channels and also have a BNC-type connector fitted (common on AIS units), rather than the
Testing of all the systems at once for any cross talk or interference is the only way to know for sure. traditional PL259 VHF connector. If there’s more than one VHF antenna, they should be separated at least one-half wavelength (three to four feet) from each other to avoid the 25 watts of transmit power from the VHF radio going straight into the AIS receiver circuitry, potentially damaging it. It’s always better to move them as far apart as possible or even to stagger them vertically. For antennas that are close in operating frequency (e.g., TV and GPS), spacing can be closer but a general rule of thumb is three feet at minimum. Objects close to a TV antenna will affect its performance. It’s best to locate the antenna at least three feet away from any metal objects or other antennas, keeping as much of the antenna above the metal as possible. The extra height above the water will be a plus in the form of additional reception range. HF antennas can be mounted nicely on each side of the pilothouse. While many cruisers might choose to install their own antennas, a professional can remove any guesswork. Testing of all the systems at once for any cross talk or interference is the only way to know for sure.

460 FLYBRIDGE
New layout and design cues complement the quiet ride and maneuverability Prestige is known for. Prestige 460 was so new that its first visit to the fuel dock was just before our trip in Southern California from Newport Beach to Long Beach. As Bayport Yachts owner JR Means and I waited for more than 300 gallons of fuel to slosh into the tank, we checked out the swanky Garroni design. Although it shares the same hull with its predecessor, the Prestige 450, which it also replaces, the refreshed model features new deck and interior layouts and follows design cues from its recently introduced larger siblings, the 630 and 680. And while the 450 did well, with the redesign, it seems good just morphed into better.
HULL #3 OF THE
The changes that make the 460 enticing are visible immediately. The massive hydraulic swim platform carries up to 500 pounds and makes launching the tender easy, because it submerges a full 32 inches
Social space on the 460 Flybridge abounds, from the flybridge (far right, bottom) to the cockpit — especially when the doors are open and it’s combined with the galley — to the main cabin salon (top left). The VIP stateroom is well appointed (top middle), and the helm includes MFDs, joystick controls and access to every system via digital switching.
Tester’s Opinion
below the surface. It’s a $27,000 option but well worth it considering owners can now stand on it and cook at the optional outdoor galley that juts out from the transom. The cockpit also gained a bit of room and teak decking is now standard. The forward-facing transom settee has been replaced by an L-shaped lounge in the starboard corner. It wraps around a highlow table and sits just ahead of a lazarette that is so large it can house optional crew quarters complete with a bed, a head and its own A/C. A hatch on the cockpit sole provides access to the machinery space, which includes the Volvo Penta engines and pods and the standard 13.5 kw Onan genset. Due to the low headroom, the space is limited but workable for engine checks. Getting aft to the pods is a bit of a squeeze. At the other end, the bow gained a lounge. No ordinary sunpad, this feature now includes popup headboards that form two chaise lounges complete with cupholders. An awning lifts up from the deck to form a superyacht-style cabana. The center cushion can be removed to reveal a skylight and a hatch, which bring light and air to the VIP stateroom below.
Readers counting along will note that the bow sunpad is the second outside area for people to gather. The third — and of course the magnet for most outdoor social activity — is the flybridge, which houses a second outdoor galley (optional), another sunpad for two and an aft dinette. The helm, to port, has a Raymarine display, a joystick, engine throttles and a seat that looks to be built for one and half humans. The steps that lead down to the cockpit are a bit steep, more like a ladder really, but two good railings provide plenty to hold onto during the descent. Inside, the 460’s layout is different than its predecessor. By removing the signature second staircase that normally leads down to the secluded master stateroom on other Prestige models, the company created a
Some folks might not believe it’s a production build. master that is now 30 percent larger. The full-beam stateroom shares the forward stairs with the guest cabin but doesn’t sacrifice much in terms of privacy. It has an en suite head, a bed on the centerline and a lounge next to one of the large windows. To port is a dresser whose top drawer flips up to form a vanity mirror. It’s quite the posh pad. Of course, the VIP cabin in the bow runs a close second. As mentioned before, plenty of light and air pour in through
There’s really very little not to like on the Prestige 460, and that’s pretty good for a fresh-outof-the-box model that hasn’t yet had the benefit of owner or dealer feedback. The larger swim platform and transom galley along with the wider cockpit and roomier master cabin are nice evolutions, while the quiet ride and the easy maneuverability that Prestige is known for continue.

the overhead hatch and skylight, but there are also hull windows and opening ports. The centerline bed splits into two single berths. Just lift the aft ends and pivot them outboard. behind matching wood paneling to port. The salon is two steps up, which raises it enough so seated guests get a near-360degree view through the newly enlarged windows. Five to six people can sit on the U-shaped settee that wraps around the foldout table to port, and a matching straight settee to starboard will fit additional guests. Nice touches include a bottle locker and digital switching via a Scheiber display panel. To starboard, the helm is well laid out and compact, so most controls are easy to reach. Twin 12-inch Raymarine ES125 MFDs — touchscreens with a control wheel to the right — sit on an angled dash behind the wheel. They’re easy to see but hard to reach from a seated position. It would be nice if the control panels were outboard on the side pad and closer to the driver, but that’s already a crowded area, home to the Volvo Penta joystick, the bow thruster joystick and the engine throttles. Volvo engine display, the EV-2 autopilot and the Raymarine 260 dual-station VHF radio. Two cupholders, an opening side window and air vents provide comfort for the driver, and the dash is covered with a matte paint that cuts down on glare and windshield reflection. Altogether, buyers can opt for three pod joysticks, including one in the aft cockpit. For anyone thinking that’s overkill, let me say that it’s the best place from which to dock, especially backing into a slip. With each iteration of the line, Prestige has stepped up its fit and finish. Understanding aspirational boating, the company knows that the owner of a 46-foot cruiser really wants to feel like he has a (smallish) superyacht and everything that implies. Our test boat featured gray oak wood surfaces — Means calls it “driftwood,” for better marketing appeal — and white headliner panels and white matte lacquered cabinetry that fit well with the Marline Pure White
leather upholstery and leather handle accents. Sound-dampening fabric panels added to the feeling of luxury. Some folks might not believe it’s a production build. We made our run up the coast at a cruising speed of 24 knots on a glorious Southern California day. Behind the Los Angeles Harbor jetty near Cabrillo Way Marina, we slowed down and put the boat through a few tests. It handled beautifully, making precise turns and taking just eight seconds to plane. Circling back over our wake, we felt no slamming or rolling. With the upgraded 435 hp IPS 6 engines, the 46 Fly topped out at 32.5 knots at 3600 rpm, where the engines burned about 45 gph. At a 24-knot cruise, the boat’s range is more than 200 nautical miles, depending on sea and wind conditions. Once again, I noticed how quiet the Prestige line is — hardly a creak to be heard, even at speed. The hard-chine hull was designed from scratch to accommo-
date Volvo Penta IPS pod drives, which I never tire of, because they’re fun and easy to drive. The Prestige 460 will make drivers look like a rock star and take the anxiety out of docking. Owners may find themselves wanting to go out and drive for any reason, just like when they got their first car. If we hadn’t been on a schedule, I’d have stayed out all day, maybe popping over to Catalina Island for a signature Buffalo Milk. There’s really very little not to like on the Prestige 460, and that’s pretty good for a fresh-out-of-the-box model that hasn’t yet had the benefit of owner or dealer feedback. The larger swim platform and transom galley along with the wider cockpit and roomier master cabin are nice evolutions, while the quiet ride and the easy maneuverability that Prestige is known for continue. With four years of feedback and some creative thinking, good did indeed just get better — much better.

TIARA
F53 FLYBRIDGE
A yacht that’s a pleasure to drive also manages to create more space aboard than should be possible. THANKS TO THE ORIGINAL “Star Trek” show of the 1960s, we all know that space is the final frontier. And thanks to the numerous “Star Trek” TV and cinema spinoffs, the quote and its space-based message will be reiterated for eons to come (or as long as syndication is lucrative). But boat buyers don’t have to go to strange new worlds to enjoy more space. They can find it on the Tiara F53 Flybridge.
One area that vies for the “best use of space” award is the flybridge deck. There’s so much seating area that owners may be hard pressed to fill it all. Or perhaps they won’t want to. Taking up the aft section of the fly is a large U-shaped settee with a high-gloss, high-low teak table. Useful for dining or resting, the settee has great visibility all around, and the cushions are well-padded for comfort. Dropping the table and tossing in the filler cushions creates a sunpad lounging area that is sufficiently sized for multiple people to kick their feet up or stretch out across the pad. Need more lounging space? Forward on either side of the helm are long settees that are perfect for lounging on while facing fore or aft, or for sitting with one’s feet on the deck. Tiara got creative by adding a
Tester’s Opinion
sunpad in front of the helm console, creating a lounging experience not usually found on a yacht this size. This area is perfect for keeping an eye on the little ones during a cruise or as a little hiding spot for someone with a book and a cocktail while at anchor. Refreshments are not far away, thanks to the entertainment center behind the helm seat. With a wet bar, a refrigerator, an ice-maker, a sink and a cutting board, it has the features needed to allow folks to spend an entire day on the flybridge. Not forgetting about the captain, Tiara created a unique seat and controls setup. First, the helm seat is doublewide and electric, to slide fore and aft. Next, Tiara added a center divider, like an armrest, that houses a joystick and a mouse controller for the chartplotters. The captain, in the left seat, or the passenger can operate the F53. And I say operate because the joystick can actually steer the yacht while it is at cruising speed. When Volvo Joystick Driving mode is activated, it works with the autopilot. The driver can use the joystick to change direction and the autopilot puts the boat back on course when he releases it. Of course, the stick can be used for tight maneuvering and docking as usual. Suitable for the Volvo Glass Cockpit, the helm console can fit two 16-inch displays,
autopilot, throttle controls, radios and more. Toggle switches are just under the console lip and offer clean lines and easy access. Typical dials and gauges are now found on the displays, uncluttering the helm. Overhead, the full-sized integrated arch/ hardtop offers solar protection; an optional full Bimini enclosure offers added protection. With the four-sided enclosure, boating season can be extended or, at the least, made more comfortable with climate-control options.
Tiara pays attention to the details; after all, it has been building watercraft for more than 60 years. On the main deck, Tiara created an amidships salon akin to what I like to call “the penthouse.” Up two steps from the aft galley and designed like an oasis, the salon boasts a portside L-sofa, an accompanying forward club chair whose backrest flips aft so passengers can sit facing forward, and a starboard loveseat. Under-seat storage is available on the port side. Under the loveseat is the electrical panel. Yep, Tiara maximized usable space by taking the breaker
The fully equipped flybridge helm is the center of a spacious and social flybridge, which includes a U-shaped settee aft (bottom center). The amidships master stateroom (top left) and its en suite head (bottom right) enjoy a private full-beam setting. The cockpit joins the main cabin with the aft doors open, and a third bunk-bed stateroom is an option.
I’m impressed not just with the handling and response, but how it’s done. With the Joystick Drive option and fingertip controls on the armrest, it really was a pleasure being behind the wheel of the F53. The salon “penthouse” will be a favorite location for many passengers.

box and getting it out of the way. It’s just switches, with no displays or meters that need viewing. While perhaps strange at first, it will grow on owners. There’s no need to dedicate a cabinet just for breakers, and having it amidships reduces some of the electrical runs. Added amenities such as opening side windows, a 40-inch LCD popup TV, a Fusion multizone stereo and a high-low table (as a coffee table or for dining) fill the area. A 40,000-Btu Marine Air system will combat hotter days. Building the F53 with large sliding glass doors essentially makes the main deck one big playground, so having an aft galley makes sense when it comes time to serve people inside and out. Adorned with quartz countertops, the portside galley has low-profile cabinets, a Sharp microwave oven, a recessed Kenyon three-burner flat cooktop and deep stainless Franke sinks. Access to the flybridge is from the aft deck via a rugged aluminum channel that supports teak-capped floating steps with stainless railings. Nice touch. How does a yacht builder move a 51,000-pound yacht? With a pair of Volvo D11 IPSII 950 diesel engines that crank out 725 hp each. With those powerful and
efficient diesels coupled to IPS drives, this is one quick, responsive and maneuverable yacht. Crank it up to wide open and move along at just more than 31 knots while burning 75 gph, or cruise at a more sedate 17.8 knots while burning 38 gph. What’s good to know is that the power is there when needed. Even with a 13.5 kw Cummins Onan diesel generator, a Seakeeper 9 gyro stabilizer system, a Glendinning power cable retractor and other ancillary systems, there’s room to access the Racor fuel filters and sea strainers in the engine room. The standard lower deck configuration is a forward VIP and an amidships master stateroom. The VIP has a secret: twin V-berths that swing together to the centerline and create a queen-size island berth. It’s a handy arrangement for a cruise that might undergo a passenger switch that requires a different sleeping plan at some point. With solid teak flooring, carpeted risers, innerspring mattresses, cedar lockers, cabinets, hull-side ports and an over-

head hatch, the VIP will make guests feel special — and cool too, thanks to the 10,000-Btu Marine Air system. A central head comes with a separate shower stall, including a teak slotted floor and a teak bench seat, as well as teak counters, a vessel basin and a VacuFlush head. Tiara identifies the lower area between the rooms as an atrium. Thanks to good elbow room and low-profile walls above that allow light from the salon to flood in, it’s more than just a walkway. To port is a utility room that can be used for a washer/dryer setup or optioned as a third stateroom with upper/lower bunks. In the sole of the atrium, under a hinged folding access door, is a huge storage compartment with dry storage for bags or provisions. Amidships is the full-beam master, with hullside windows with opening ports, a queen pedestal berth with a pillowtop innerspring mattress, divided storage under the berth, cedar lockers, a 32-inch Samsung flat TV and a port dresser. Ambient lighting is provided by the side windows and overhead skylights. A single basin sink and

Tiara pays attention to the details; after all, it has been building watercraft for more than 60 years. From the oversized but watertight engine room light switch (because anything else just wouldn’t do) to the umpteen hundred screw-down wire loops (more than tiedown straps) to the overbuilt flybridge staircase, Tiara’s focus on quality craftmanship and utilization is evident throughout. Almost every seat has storage, the sink and cooktop covers have dedicated storage slots, and there’s an aft garage for fenders, covers and supplies. Throughout the F53, Tiara uses hardwood teak flooring, wenge wood for cabinets and drawers (even in the galley), Chilewich wall coverings, and leather for the sofas and seats. Even with the breakers located under the loveseat, it’s easy to energize the yacht, as Tiara has centralized the battery buttons and shore/gen buttons in a console. Come aboard, press the desired power system, and services that have breakers on come to life. Doesn’t get much easier than that.

There are many ways to become a better boater this winter. We have a dozen for you to try. BY ZUZANA PROCHAZKA
HOW DOES ONE GET TO Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice. How does one get to be a better boater? Pretty much the same way. And what better time to practice than winter, when the distractions — soaking up the sun, vacations and long weekends — are limited? West Coast boat owners have the luxury of a mild climate and keeping their boat in the water year-round, so they can use the next few months to hone their skills, broaden their horizons and dig deeper into details to enhance their on-the-water expertise. What follows are a dozen easy ways for boaters to become better by summer. Folks who tackle one per weekend will be a rock star by Memorial Day.
PR ACTICE BOAT H A NDLING & DOCKING Ask anyone (who’s willing to tell the truth) about the most difficult aspect of boating, and the answer will likely be docking. Sure, it’s all easy out on open water, but once you approach the hard bits and have to prove your close-quarters maneuvering abilities, it’s a whole new world. Most people are intimidated by docking. Their attitude is “let’s get this over and done with and do it as infrequently as possible.” I look at it as a fun challenge, so I spent one entire afternoon docking my boat from various angles. Across the fairway, I gained an audience of folks who served cocktails while they watched. In a few hours, I got down the various nuances of wind, current, speed, etc., and my audience applauded. During that time, I got better and they got tipsy. Even with whiz-bang technology such as pod drives, practice is a good idea. Try approaching bow on, backing in, side-tying, spinning the boat in its own length, and keeping station in a breeze. As you become one with the boat, you’ll have little need for the bow thruster, which only seems to elicit snickers from dock neighbors anyway. Karen Prioleau, instructor in the Professional Mariner Program at Orange Coast College School of Sailing and Seamanship, takes it one step further. “On a twin-screw boat, practice using one engine,” she said. “Try it first with the port engine and then starboard, to get the feel for how the boat will handle, in case you happen to lose one in an emergency.”

BECOME AN ELECTRONICS WHIZ Electronic charts have transformed navigation and, sadly, many mariners today barely recognize paper charts. I carry them whenever possible, because if I lost power, I’d be left with a dead ship. Prepare for events like this by taking an onboard inventory of paper charts over the winter. Practice doing dead reckoning on them during a three-hour slow run up the coast, and see how closely you can estimate your position. Most people — I’m one of them — quickly learn the basics of a new chartplotter or radar system, and that’s as far as they go. But today’s systems are uber-powerful and include more information and tools than users can imagine. Dust off the manual and spend a day learning the in-depth workings of the boat’s electronics. Get to know the various alarms that can be set (e.g., anchor, MARPA), learn the symbols and figure out the fine points of the sonar, which could lead to more fish. Be sure to get the most up-to-date e-charts via software downloads, and add waypoints you may need in the future. Don’t stop at the plotter. Study your engine information screens for diagnostics and failure messages, and if you have a digital switching system such as Scheiber or CZone, learn all it can do, from turning on lights to checking the bilge.
2
3 GET A NCHORING DOW N PAT
A
nchoring is almost as important as docking. Sticking the boat to the ground saves the day in case of an emergency, and boat owners worry less and sleep better when they’re anchored well for the weekend. Good anchoring skills mean quiet coves and remote places can be added to the itinerary. If your anchor has never seen the water, check the anchor locker to make sure the chain or line will pay out smoothly. While checking the locker, make time to mark or re-mark the anchor chain so it’s easy to determine how much is out, and make sure the bitter end is actually secured to the boat. Practice anchoring in small coves, in big wind and in variable bottom conditions, such as grass or gravel. Figure out how your boat likes to anchor, so you can do it quickly and with Zen. Try anchoring fore and aft with two anchors or try a Bahamian moor with two bow anchors. Anchor and take a line to shore to see how to cinch in the boat when there’s a cross breeze, or try Med mooring: put a bow anchor down and back the transom toward a dock. Comes in handy on European charters. Try anchoring alone with just the remote windlass control, to test your single-handing skills. Finally, develop and practice hand signals with your first mate, so anchoring is a peaceful and quiet experience that will be the envy of the anchorage.

STUDY THE RULES OF THE ROA D
I
f your knowledge of the rules of the road begins and ends with “red, right, returning” or “sail over power,” you may want to spend a few evenings by the fireside, studying. Not just right-of-way guidance, these rules require a thorough understanding of Weems & Plath ROADrule lights and day shapes that identify another vessel’s predicament or condition from afar. For example, if a boat is displaying two red lights, one over the other, what’s going on aboard? Red over red — the captain is dead — the vessel is not under command. Red over white is most likely a commercial fishing vessel: red over white — fishing at night. For a helpful list of nautical mnemonics, check out BoatSafe.com. A great tool that will keep you entertained on cold winter evenings is the Weems & Plath LIGHTrule. Like a large slide rule, this tool identifies all COLREGS (international rules addressing collision avoidance); 60 light combinations from bow, stern, port and starboard angles; and 15 day shapes (e.g., a black ball in the rigging means the vessel is anchored in daytime). It’s more fun than it sounds, and a couple can always make a game out of quizzing each other. Keep it aboard for quick reference throughout the boating season.
4
CREATE SAFETY CHECKLISTS My discussions with Lt. Cmdr. Andrea Sachetti, an H-65 helicopter pilot in U.S. Coast Guard District 11 in San Francisco, focused on the importance of having a plan for various scenarios prior to them happening. Spend an afternoon writing down steps in case of fire, flood, abandon ship, engine failure or crew overboard. “It will be easier to take the right steps when panic sets in if you’ve thought it through beforehand,” Sachetti said. Write out thorough and separate checklists and laminate the procedures to keep by the helm for future reference. It’s smart to walk around the boat and find the equipment (e.g., through-hull plugs, fire extinguishers, life raft) that will aid in each scenario. Post the proper procedure for an emergency VHF call, in case the captain is the one who’s incapacitated and the crew doesn’t know how to use the radio. Discuss these procedures with your usual crew and brainstorm better ways of doing things. Then, conduct a few practice drills that ensure everyone’s prepared in case of an emergency.
5
CREATE DEPARTURE & ARRIVAL CHECKLISTS Checklists are magical in that they keep everything organized without having to reinvent the wheel (in your head) during every
6
departure or arrival back at the dock. Once you develop a routine, write it down; that way, next season you won’t need to dust off the brain cells and remember what to do. For example, when departing, you may need to open the through-hulls, check the engine oil and transmission fluid, monitor the batteries, disconnect the shore-power cord, spool up the gyro stabilizer, and turn on electronics at the main and flybridge helms. When you return, the process may include shutting down and checking the engines, making sure the bilge is empty, switching lights off and security systems on, flushing the outboard, putting on canvas and rinsing the decks. Whatever the process, just get it down. That way, guests who come along as occasional crew can help without needing too much guidance.
DO EQUIPMENT CHECKS/UPDATES Wintertime is great downtime for mainten ance and upgrades. Change the engine and genset oil, service running gear if needed, repair those odd lights that seem to work sporadically, and load up flashlights and handheld radios with fresh batteries. Also check the fire extinguishers and dig through the first-aid kit for expired medication, bandage conditions and inventory of seasickness pills. This is the stuff that gets no attention during the season’s fun times but must be ready and working when needed.
7
8 LE A R N SOME K NOTS
C
an’t tie a knot? Tie a lot. Knots are not just for sailors and all their strings. Knowing knots makes one a true mariner who can assume attitude when coming upon a dock cleat with a mound of tangled line wrapped around it. Knots can also get you out of a predicament, such as when you need a tow or an anchor snubber. The must-know knots include the cleat hitch (see previous paragraph about cleat snootiness), the clove hitch and round-turn-two half hitches (two ways to tie on fenders), a sheet bend (tying together lines of different diameters), and a bowline (a loop knot used for just about everything). A rolling hitch applied to anchor chain is a great way to create an on-the-go snubber that will take the strain off the windlass and put it on a cleat. Learning knots is easy thanks to various websites and apps. Try AnimatedKnots.com or Knots3D.com. Nothing will make a boater saltier (and handier) than a little knot knowledge. daring, and the water’s not too cold, practice a beach landing or two. The water always looks shallower just before you jump in, and pulling a loaded dinghy up onto the beach is never as easy as you think.
LEARN DINGHY BASICS Don’t forget to spend some time this winter with the little boat — the tender. This is your car, your transport to the shore-side bar and your exploration vehicle. Many people give no thought to learning to drive a dinghy, which is why there are so many bad dinghy drivers. Learn to load a dinghy safely, especially if you venture out with a lot of newbies. Don’t assume everyone knows how to step into or out of a dinghy — specifically if
9
they’re young or old. Teach them to tie up a dinghy: a bowline on a long painter is great. Don’t tie up a dinghy so tightly that nobody else can get to the dock. Keep hands, feet, pets, etc., away from the engine and prop. Never drive on plane through an anchorage or a diving/ snorkeling site, and always drive with awareness. Take the time to teach kids to drive — they’ll love the practice. Consider better ways to launch and retrieve the tender, in order to make these operations safer and faster. If you’re particularly
TAKE A BASIC DIESEL MANAGEMENT COURSE I’ll never be a diesel mechanic, but knowing the basics will save my bacon and make me look like a hero. OCC Sailing in Southern California offers “Diesel in a Day” courses that cover bleeding the injectors, changing oil and impellers, clearing water strainers, replacing belts, and managing fuel and oil filters. If there’s not a convenient course near you, offer to pay your mechanic for a day of his time and get hands-on training with your specific engine(s). Don’t forget about the genset.
10
BECOME A STUDENT AGAIN Smart people spend their lives learning, so don’t be afraid (or embarrassed) to become a student again. Take some classes in weather or coastal navigation, especially if you feel a bit rusty. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Power Squadron offer courses that will reinforce one’s boating mindset. MarinersLearningSystem.com offers online captain’s courses, and even if you don’t need a Coast Guard license, it’s a great way to get smarter on all things nautical. YouTube and Boats.com are good sources for how-to videos about everything from docking to fishing, so spend some time in front of a screen. Remember, however, that screen time is no substitute for actual hands-on experience. Sailors know this well. Chris Jester, owner of SailTime Orange County, said, “We take couples who have only been crew with very little skippering experience and in five days of private instruction, have them confidently in command.” Chris Rundlett, who runs a school in the Caribbean, puts his instructors through periodic training and racing courses. “No matter how much I think I know, I always learn from other people,” Rundlett said, “and that makes me a better teacher.” You see, experts learn and practice all the time. That’s how they became experts. So set some learning goals after the holidays to accomplish by summer — a smarter boater is a safer boater.
11
BECOME A BETTER FIRST M ATE
B 12
etter boating isn’t just the captain’s responsibility. A competent first mate can make all the difference and cover up a few mistakes too. Besides, what if the captain falls ill or overboard and the mate’s the one in charge? Learning to anticipate what a boat will do or what the captain needs makes a good first mate. Communication is key, so learn hand signals, stop yelling, be able to stand a watch so the captain can rest, and manage docklines with grace. Yes, there are pink and blue jobs, and a couple can fall into a rut, but never switching duties is boring, not to mention unsafe. Ideally, each member of a permanent crew should be able to single-hand the boat to safety, and that means stepping out of your comfort zone and practicing skills you may rarely use, such as docking and anchoring. Take an afternoon trip with your partner but ask that person not to do anything unless absolutely necessary, to see how the journey goes when you’re in charge and “alone.”

BETTER POWER-TO-WEIGHT RATIOS Modern engines are significantly lighter than their predecessors, producing twice the power at half the weight of older comparable engines, in some cases. Older engines require up to six pounds per horsepower, but newer models can produce one horsepower for less than two pounds. Lighter, more powerful engines with a reduced footprint will allow older boats with limited engine-room space to be repowered with higher horsepower units. This combination of less weight and more horsepower often translates to greater boat speeds. Even better, the reduction in weight doesn’t sacrifice performance or durability. Just because that new engine is lighter doesn’t mean it is a lightweight. Design innovations coupled with the greater use of advanced alloys allow manufacturers to reduce weight without sacrificing expected engine service life or reliability. The use of advanced technology such as constant computer monitoring means problems are caught well before the point of catastrophic failure, reducing repair costs and downtime while increasing service life. One caution when comparing engine weights, however: Be sure to verify whether the published weight does or does not include the reduction gear. Some manufacturers include them but other manufacturers don’t.
EFFICIENT, GREENER TECH Advances in engines’ fuel delivery — specifically electronically controlled fuel systems — are a boon to both the environment and an owner’s wallet. Replacing mechanical injection pumps with single-rail fuel delivery — where the injector is computer controlled — allows digitally controlled engines to make thousands of instantaneous calculations and provide the best performance possible. Improved fuel injection control makes multiple fuel injections per stroke possible, giving a new engine the ability to efficiently wring the most benefit from every drop of fuel.
Fuel systems that include large primary filters and smaller secondary filters will deliver a solid first line of defense for engines. Clear bowls make it simpler to monitor the fuel’s cleanliness.
Another benefit of all this improved fuel injector control? The higher response rate of electronic injectors and the fuel pulse shaping it provide a quieter running engine — as much as an 80 percent noise reduction at idle in some engines. What’s not to love about a quieter engine that produces less smoke and delivers better fuel economy while extending a boat’s cruising range?
FUEL & MORE Speaking of engine efficiency and fuel economy, according to national repair statistics, nine out of 10 problems owners are likely to encounter with new diesel engines will be the result of contaminated fuel. Don’t fret over that too much, though. Here’s how to keep a boat’s fuel system in top condition and its diesel engine from becoming a statistic.
52 SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2018

11/28/17 10:34 AM
Loving Care The 10 commandments of diesel fuel care go something like this: Buy fuel from a reliable source. Filter fuel as it comes aboard. Add fuel stabilizer and biocides, particularly in the case of long-term storage. Keep water out! Install a robust fuel filtration system with dual primary filters. Install a vacuum gauge to monitor fuel filter performance. Regularly check filter bowls for signs of contamination. Change all fuel filters/elements on a regular basis as per the engine manufacturer’s recommendations. Keep fuel tanks clean, and clean dirty tanks immediately. Install an onboard fuel polishing system.
One of the major differences between gasoline and diesel engines is the way they use fuel. Gasoline is simply a fuel that’s burned to produce heat and power, but diesel fuel additionally acts as a lubricant, which is why it feels oily. Diesel engines circulate more fuel than is needed to produce power, and this “extra” fuel not only helps lubricate the engine but also carries away excess heat.
RACOR TURBINE FUEL FILTER
Nine out of 10 problems owners are likely to encounter with new diesel engines will be the result of contaminated fuel.
The key to keeping a diesel engine happy is clean fuel. The reason for all of this clean fuel hubbub has to do with diesel engines’ fuel injectors. As I mentioned earlier, these precision-tuned components deliver a precise, ultra-fine mist into the combustion chamber. They don’t like contaminants, and even microscopic specks of dirt or water can wreak havoc on the combustion process — as well as on the injectors and the kid’s college fund.
FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE A typical diesel fuel system includes a large primary filter mounted on a bulkhead near the engine and a smaller secondary filter mounted on the engine itself. The primary filter does the lion’s share of fuel filtration, while the finer mesh secondary unit does the cleanup work by filtering out any microscopic particles of grit and water that make it past the primary. Many diesels will also have a second primary filter plumbed into their fuel system, allowing owners to change a clogged filter while keeping the engine running. Primary filters should have a clear sediment bowl that allows owners to visually check for water or sediment, which should be part of their daily routine while cruising. Fuel filters should be changed when dirty, but definitely prior to affecting engine performance. Owners can remain vigilant by replacing filters at regular intervals — X amount of hours or annually, for example — but a more accurate way to monitor filter performance is to install a vacuum gauge at the primary filter. It provides a visual representation of fuel flow restriction through the primary filter or, conversely, how hard it is for the engine to “suck” fuel through it. The higher the gauge pressure, the more clogged the filter is, indicating the need for replacement. To help keep bad fuel from entering the tank in the first place, use a multistage fuel filter funnel during fueling. Popular examples of these include the Racor Fuel Filter Funnel (parker.com/racor) or Mr. Funnel (mrfunnel.com). One final note on fueling. Even with a fancy new filter funnel and other such precautions, the best option is to always SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2018

One of the best marinas I ever saw in this regard was located beside a major highway and also served as a truck stop. If either is present, go elsewhere for fuel.

Buying clean fuel, however, is only half the battle. Two of a boat owner’s biggest enemies in the battle for clean fuel are water contamination — once the fuel is on

board and during long-term storage — and sulfur. Diesels use pressure to generate combustion, and when water enters the engine it turns to steam, which can literally blow injectors to pieces. Water also mixes with the sulfur in fuel to create sulfuric acid — sort of like the blood in the critters in the “Alien” movies — which can cause internal engine parts to corrode. So how does water get into the fuel tank? One way is through the tank’s vent system. Unlike the closed fuel system in a car, a boat’s tank is vented, creating an open-to-the-environment system that lets moisture in, where it can condense on the inside walls of the tank due to daily heating and cooling cycles. The more air in the tank, the more moisture and potential condensation. To combat this, one recommendation is to keep the fuel tank full (up to 95 percent), particularly during long-term storage. Another common point of entry is the fuel tank’s deck fill, usually due to damaged or missing O-rings. Fuel fills located on sidedecks are especially vulnerable in this regard, particularly on sailboats, since they can ship a lot of water during rough passages, heavy rains or even during washdowns.

After water enters a fuel tank, it eventually separates and settles to the bottom — a common problem with fuel stored for a long time. That’s when it gets buggy. Microbes thrive in such water, and their only goal in life is to eat and multiply. Sure, biocides — usually introduced after the fact — will kill the little SOBs, but as any good hit man knows, killing is the easy part; the problem is disposing of the bodies. In the case of dead microbes, they’ll lie in wait at the bottom of a tank until a rough passage and then rise up, zombie-like, to clog filters and wreak general vengeance on the fuel system or, worse, the engine. The best strategy, particularly for longterm storage, is to treat clean fuel with stabilizers and biocides before a bug issue occurs and prevent water from entering the tank in the first place. No water, no critters. SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2018

THE SHOW GROWS
Now with a third location, the Seattle Boat Show is ready for its annual run. LATE JANUARY IN THE PACIFIC Northwest can only mean one thing for avid and new boaters: the Seattle Boat Show. The show, the largest on the West Coast, is set to open Friday, Jan. 26 and run until Saturday, Feb. 3. That’s one day shorter than normal, but it should be plenty of time to visit all three show locations — CenturyLink Field Event Center, South Lake Union and Bell Harbor Marina — and browse among 1,000 recreational watercraft and more than 400 exhibitors, attend a couple of the more than 200 seminars and enjoy activities for kids. With more than three acres of indoor space for attendees to wander and boats of every size and for every purpose, the boat show will have something to capture the attention of veteran boaters, new boaters and even tiny boaters-to-be.
Yes, that’s correct. For the first time, the show will be spread over three locations instead of two, and shuttles will run continuously between the sites. The indoor venue at CenturyLink Field Event Center will, as always, showcase more than three acres of the latest innovations in marine accessories, technology and boating gear — and boats. Lots of boats. The show’s on-the-water locations at South Lake Union and Bell Harbor Marina will feature about 200 world-class yachts, including new vessels from the likes of Ocean Alexander, Horizon, Hampton, Selene, Maritimo, Kadey-Krogen, Ranger, Riviera, Cutwater, Tiara, Regal, Sea Ray, Helmsman and too many others to mention here. One feature that sets the Seattle show apart from most other boat shows is the sheer number of seminars offered to attendees. In the past, about 200 free seminars were offered over the course of the show, and 2018 may have even more. While the final topics and schedule aren’t available as we go to press, early indications show that 25 new presenters will be on the schedule, in addition to more panels. Of course, technology, communications, navigation and more will be covered, usually more than once. Anglers will be happy to hear that 19 new topics will be presented on the fishing stage. Experts will share their tips on catching trout, perch, bass and salmon. And boaters who enjoy catching their own shellfish dinner can attend seminars dedicated to capturing Dungeness crab or shrimp. Boat owners on a mission to learn some advanced techniques and tips will find such training classes are available for a fee

through Boat Show University. Extended and in-depth, Boat Show University’s three-hour nautical training seminars provide a range of studies that in the past have included courses on weather, cruising to Alaska, working with new onboard technologies and more. And new this year is a full-day women’s program. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 26 — Women’s Day at the show, during which a number of free seminars for women will be presented — is a program called Women: Dock, Diesel,
Navigate, Crew Overboard. Taught by women for women, the program, which is part of Boat Show University and has a fee attached to it, will pay special attention to developing four core boating skills: docking, navigation, diesel engine maintenance and rescue of crew overboard. Show visitors with a taste for the grape or for hops and malt should pay attention to when they go to the show. Opening night is reserved for the Uncorked event, which allows showgoers who purchased
an Uncorked-specific ticket to taste a variety of domestic and international wines at various stations set up throughout CenturyLink. Sails & Ales dominates the second Friday night of the show and features the best Northwest craft beer from local breweries — and the Northwest craft beer scene is in high gear. Information about both events and tickets — $30 for each, which includes admission to the show and tasting tokens — can be found on the show’s website.

NOMAR BUMPERS ®
Nomar® Bumpers are a soft-mounted bumper which absorbs impact and allows you to slide in and out of your slip with NO FRICTION, DRAG OR MARRING of your hull. This makes for a safer & less stressful docking experience by allowing everyone to stay on board. Nomar® Bumpers eliminate the need for fenders & are perfect for tight docking situations and narrow slips. They also allow the vessel closer to the dock for easier and safer boarding.

BUDDY BOATING
Buddy boating means you can raft-up with people you know and trust, as we’ve done here with the owners of Big Daddy.
Making friends is easy. Just add water. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP
WE LOVE TO GO BOATING with friends — we in our boat and they in theirs — and have been very lucky when doing so. There are few boaters we have “buddy boated” with who we wouldn’t want to cruise with in the future. In our early years of boating, all of our boating friends had young families and successful nine-to-five jobs, so we were very compatible. Our boating adventures were restricted to weekends, two-week vacations, entertaining small children and nap times. We absolutely looked forward to naptime and bedtime, to get a little adult time. We all had common interests when
boating, such as fishing, crabbing, hiking and socializing around a campfire. As our families grew up and left the nest and friends departed boating and we hit retirement, the friends changed, as did the interests. We venture farther, take two- to three-month-long cruises, anchor in secluded coves and enjoy the wildlife. Teaming up is a safe and reassuring
strategy for exploring new territory or for new boat owners looking for some mentoring. There is also safety in numbers. If you encounter trouble, a companion boat may have the tools, equipment or expertise needed to help solve the problem. Along with that comfort zone, however, comes the human factor. While traveling “on the hip,” tempers can slip if buddy boaters don’t clearly understand respective goals and objectives, including travel speed, miles per day, nights on anchor vs. tied to a dock with the hustle and bustle of a marina, and budget. Traveling with a flotilla, the potential for drama and conflict

it is perfectly acceptable to politely say no to anyone you do not feel comfortable traveling with, for any reason. Conversely, do not expect every boater you see want to team up with you. Some boaters prefer to cruise solo. Be sensitive about imposing on anyone’s desire for privacy. It’s best to have communication about plans and goals. Where do you each want to go? How long do you want to stay? How much time will be spent cruising, and at what cruising speed? Be upfront with expectations. Even the most compatible friends on land may have differing visions of the boating lifestyle. There is no shame in pointing your boat in a different direction if you find the situation isn’t ideal for you. When we cruise with another boat, we tend to intentionally meet up and separate to allow for different priorities. This also helps to prevent the partnership from falling into a leader/follower relationship. Some situations where the more experienced vessel crew calls the shots when making plans, and the buddy boat follows along may seem like a fine compromise for a less experienced boat looking for help from a more experienced crew, but one-sided planning may lead to resentment that’s not healthy for the long term. Discuss expectations. Buddy boating only has a chance of working if both parties share in the decision-making. Just because one crew may have more experience doesn’t mean they are the default leader. Timelines and destinations are best determined by everyone involved — not dictated from one to another. We’ve spent extensive time boating with buddies and traveling independently. They are both enjoyable. The one thing buddy boating is not a substitute for is self-reliance. We like to spend afternoons on the bridge with boating buddies and beverages. Our friends on Scorpio joined us and rafted up at Blake Island’s docks, saving valuable space for other boats.
is multiplied. Successful buddy boating can be fun, provided you do it correctly. Compatible cruising goals and humor are very helpful in establishing a float plan that allows for privacy and togetherness. Buddy boating etiquette dictates that
The mutual assistance of a buddy boat can be invaluable. It may be as simple as sharing local knowledge, or as significant as being able to provide assistance for breakdowns or emergency situations. Along the same lines, each individual has his own specialties, talents and skills that are brought into the group. We have

learned so much from our boating friends. Everyone has another crew to share ideas with, compare weather forecasts with or compare/verify tide and current calculations. If you subscribe to the mindset that life is better when shared, it’s also just more fun enjoying the boating life with friends. With an established friendship, it’s much easier to create memorable evenings with buddy boaters playing board games, eating potluck dinners, or just absorbing and enjoying a secluded anchorage. Although each boat has provisions for self-sufficiency, sharing meals is a fun part of buddy boating. We often potluck, alternating the host boat, or enjoying happy
hour on one boat and dinner on the other. If there is a third boat, its crew may host dessert. We’ve created lasting memories with friends, thanks to sharing time boating together. It’s been said that spending months at a time aboard is like living in a closet with your spouse, and conversation can become a bit tedious. It’s easy to fall into a routine of eating a meal together quickly and then retreating to our books and bed with simple snippets of discussion throughout. Spending so much time together means that we know what each other did that day and there is little variation to stimulate conversation. Buddy boating always ensures conversation stays fresh, interesting and fun. People on another boat present a great opportunity for boat owners to get pictures of their boat underway. They also serve as a great tripod when you want a photo of you and your crew. Buddy boating also provides the opportunity for quality time with members of the same gender. Let’s face it, there is some truth to the old cliché that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. From time to time we all need to hang out, vent, or just talk to peers of the same gender. A buddy boating experience can go south
in any number of ways. Some the more
common negative experiences include the following: A lack of boating etiquette is a deal killer. A crew that never volunteers to lead anywhere or offer an opinion on course plotting or destination planning can be a drag. Boaters are by and large a generous group, but there are limits. It is not enjoyable to buddy boat if the boat has not been properly provisioned for the trip (e.g., food, water, fuel and equipment). Running constant radio commentary on the VHF is a no-no. A vessel that is not properly maintained can lead to breakdowns, which affects everyone. A couple that broadcasts its domestic squabbles to the accompanying boat — or to the anchorage or marina — is not a good buddy boating couple. Buddy boating, when successful, breeds friendships not because of the amount of the time spent together but because of the shared experiences. Some boat crews become friends for life and others may become only occasional acquaintances. In any case, the buddy boating experience can be enriching on a variety of levels. From new friends come new anchorages, rafting and anchoring techniques, recipes, stories and experiences.

QUICK ESCAPE
ANOTHER SIDE OF THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS West Sound Marina on Orcas Island is a laidback hideaway. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP
AFTER CRUISING THE ISLANDS FOR a couple of weeks, we were looking for a location that lacked the hustle and bustle experienced in most San Juan Islands spots. After a short discussion, we set a course for one of our favorite little hideaways, West Sound Marina 1 on Orcas Island. The area does not have the attractions that the other marinas and state parks have, so it’s a more laidback offering. A majority of boaters cruise right past West Sound on their way to other places in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. West Sound is one of those interesting areas that has a lot to offer when you know where to look. P R O C E E D W I T H C AU T I O N
There are unique wild residents in West Sound Marina, including, apparently, peacocks. PNW-16
The approach to the guest moorage is a bit tricky but should be successfully accomplished by all but the careless and clueless. Picnic Island is immediately south of the marina, and arriving boats must stay far off the drying reef on the west side of the island and stay close to the guest moorage dock to avoid a protruding rock edge on the island’s north side. A properly scaled chart, a working depthsounder, a conscious plan and a sharp eye will be useful here.

The north side of the guest dock is reserved for boats of less than 30 feet because of the tight quarters. The south side is for larger boats and we have found nine feet of depth on a zero tide. As with all marinas in this popular cruising area, reservations are suggested during the cruising season. The marina offers a fuel dock, pumpout and a well-stocked chandlery. The cellphone service and Wi-Fi are spotty, but that’s part of the appeal — checking out and escaping from the rat race. If you need a boat repair, you’re in luck. A walk along the bay will yield sightings of herons, loons and otters. On the roads leading inland is pasture land, old cabins and windmills. Folks feeling more energetic should follow Deer Harbor Road north along the water to the Turtle Back Mountain trailhead and then up the trail to the lookout, where the view is worth the effort. While out walking on our last visit we spotted a small flock of peacocks wandering along the road. No one knows where they came from; they appeared about four years ago and have become residents of West Sound. They have even been seen in the marina and out on the docks. TA S T E O F T H E I S L A N D S A pleasant 10-minute walk around the bay is the historic Kingfish Inn and West Sound Café 2 . The small and popular café is a locals gathering place, and it will be crowded, so reservations are recommended. The interior is warm and inviting, with exposed wood walls and wooden tables. Baskets of flowers hang on the porch. During the warmer months, outdoor seating overlooking the water is available. The menu has plenty of variety, including sockeye salmon, halfpound cheeseburgers, fish-and-chips, and pork tacos. Also popular are the portabella mushroom burgers and the calamari. We enjoyed some steamed clams. If you prefer not to walk to the café, launch the tender and motor across the bay to the county dock, which is for day-use only, and the Kingfish Inn is conveniently located up the dock and across the road. We find the quiet marina to be a perfect location to cure the cabin fever — kick back, enjoy a good book and take in the surrounding view and breathtaking sunsets.

BOATERS NEAR COUPEVILLE AND PORT Townsend may not know they’re in waters that were strategically important in the late 19th and early 20th century. Ft. Casey, near Coupeville on Whidbey Island; Ft. Worden, near Port Townsend; and Ft. Flagler, on the tip of Marrowstone Island, were built in the 1890s and formed an important “triangle of fire” that the U.S. hoped would thwart any seaborne invasion attempts. This piece of maritime history sits at the heart of Puget Sound.
By World War I, most of Ft. Casey’s guns and mortars were
removed. It was used as a training facility up to the mid-1940s.
Ft. Casey was named for the Brigadier General Thomas Lincoln Casey, U.S. Army Chief of Engineers.
There are three miles of the Pacific Northwest Scenic Trail that wrap around the park, for boaters to stretch their sea legs.
Admiralty Head Lighthouse is located in Ft. Casey State Park, and Point Wilson Lighthouse is directly across the channel, north of Port Townsend.
Visitors might hear the roar of a U.S. Navy jet from nearby Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, which is in active use.

MEET ARDI KVEVEN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ORCA
OCEAN RESEARCH COLLEGE ACADEMY (ORCA) is an innovative early-college program at Everett Community College that is focused on introducing students to the marine biology of the Pacific Northwest. Founded by Ardi Kveven, ORCA gives young students a jump start into college by offering an associate degree in addition to their high school diploma upon completion. Kveven, an Everson, Wash., native who earned a biology degree from University of Washington and a masters in science education from Western Washington University, dreamed of creating a program like ORCA 16 years ago. Sea: Tell us about the ORCA program at Everett. Why is it important to the area/ industry? Ardi: ORCA was a dream of mine 16 years ago. I was fortunate to receive a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to start a magnet program for high school juniors and seniors through Everett Community College. My lifelong passion has been to introduce students to the natural world in which they live. Our students engage deeply in research, as they increase their understanding of the marine environment in which they live. Critical thinking, problem solving and communication are all natural offshoots from research. Because they work collaboratively to ask questions and pursue research, ORCA students are exactly the type of employees local employers seek. Our connection to Port of Everett — where our campus is located — and local industry provides opportunities for students to get internships. We’ve had multiple students work for OceanGate, the submarine company located downstairs from us. What do your duties include? You name it, I basically do it. From captaining the boat, hiring, program planning, student recruitment, reviewing applicants, research mentoring, budgeting and cleaning, I do it all.
Please tell us more about Phocoena. The Research Vessel Phocoena is a 34-foot landing craft that was funded by the National Science Foundation. It was built in Washington state by Bean Custom Marine Fabrication, and we were able to customize all aspects relevant to the research our students do. We have twin 250 hp Yahama outboards to power her, a dropdown bow door to provide remote beach access for students, and two davits (one manual and one power) that rotate through the bow door to pull up equipment. With an enclosed walk-around cabin and a big foredeck, Phocoena is able to work in the Pacific Northwest year around. Her name (pronounced Foe-SEE-Na) is the scientific name for harbor porpoise, the primary marine mammal we see from our research cruises. What types of research do participants engage in while they’re in the program? We founded a longitudinal study in Possession Sound 14 years ago — we originally used to charter a boat before Phocoena was delivered three years ago — that we call the State of Possession Sound (SOPS). We collect data relevant to all aspects of an estuary. The students measure the following parameters: Water chemistry, including temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, chlorophyll concentration, fecal coliform levels and nutrient levels. Biological diversity: Sea birds and marine mammal presence and abundance. Plankton abundance and diversity. Heavy metal levels. Additionally, students navigate the vessel
and monitor the ship’s position. This project helps students make connections and build their understanding of complex systems. We structure and add more layers as their understanding increases. Working with big data sets is the future for these students, as they graph, analyze and interpret their findings. SOPS is the backbone for first-year student research, and then students ask a question of their own design — and hopefully utilizing the SOPS data they collected in year one — and test it during their second year. We have had students research and present their findings to the scientific community on topics such as river otter diet, eel grass uptake of heavy metals and microplastics in seal scat, to name just a few. While our students continue on to university in a variety of majors, from English to political science, 66 percent of our alumni pursue a STEM field. Regardless of where they end up, they understand research and how to ask and attempt to answer questions through the use of evidence. What types of students tend to be drawn to the program? ORCA students are motivated by a challenge. If they are to complete two years of college while they are still in high school, they need to be ready for the rigors of such a program. While science may draw them in, the writing and historical context our program provides enriches them and encourages to pursue a wide variety of fields. We now have alumni who are doctors, pharmacists, veterinarians and teachers.

is a constant issue for business owners in the rural vacation spot. The solution for the owners of the Union Steamship Co. Marina was to buy a 30-foot boat to house some of the workers. They also have housed some of their workers in the upstairs rooms of the restaurant. In the future they plan to get an area of the marina rezoned so that six floating duplexes can house more staff.

LA BOAT SHOW — TAKE 62 More boats and exhibits expected for year two under new ownership.
FOR 62 YEARS THE LOS Angeles Boat Show has attracted the boating crowd from Southern California and beyond, and for the second year the venerable show is under the management of the Duncan McIntosh Co. Inc., the producer of the Newport Boat Show, the Southern California Boat Show, the Fred Hall Shows and the San Diego Boat Show. The 2018 show will also mark the second time the LA Boat Show will be held at the Fairplex in Pomona, Calif.
Last year’s inaugural run under DMC exceeded organizers’ expectations — especially given that three of the four days saw record rainfall — in both the quality and quantity of attendees. Sun Country Marine reported a 400 percent increase in sales, and other exhibitors had similar stories, thanks to new models in every category from builders who are gaining confidence. “The wakesports segment has seen a significant amount of growth in the last decade or so, especially wakesurfing,” McIntosh said in the wake of last year’s show, “and boat manufacturers have been busy innovating in an effort to give boaters — and boarders — an exceptional experience.” Attendees of this year’s show, which will cover more than 300,000 square feet, can expect to see new offerings from wakeboat manufacturers such as Centurion, Tige, Malibu, Nautique, Cobalt, MasterCraft, Sea Ray and others. Innovation in the wakeboat space has yielded such wake-specific technology as new tabs, “gates,” rudders and SEAMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2018

plates that plow up huge wakes for surfing and launching. And a couple of manufacturers even have wrist-worn systems that allow surfers to control the wake size and switch it to the other side of the boat. But the “cool” boats aren’t the only ones enjoying a new-model heyday. Pontoon manufacturers such as Bennington, Qwest, Crest, South Bay, Premier and Manitou are taking their boats to extremes, both in performance and comfort. With features such as outboards up to 400 hp, bars and galleys, slides, luxury seating and color schemes that will attract attention from across the lake, pontoon boats are part of the mainstream. Of course, fans of deckboats, bowriders, fishing boats, cuddy cabin boats, center consoles, cruisers and every other style will find plenty to ooh and aah over, from all the best builders, including boats up to nearly 40 feet. In addition, exhibitors will have the accessories, gear, equipment, electronics,

BROKERAGE ADVICE
YACHT BROKERAGE FOUNDER STAN MILLER DIES STAN MILLER, the founder of the eponymous well-known Southern California yacht brokerage, Stan Miller Yachts, died Nov. 17, 2017, in Palm Desert, Calif., at the age of 91. The well-respected yacht broker and U.S. Navy veteran founded Stan Miller Sailboats in 1955, with his brother Jim, and started building masts, rudders and leeboards in Seal Beach. When the brothers decided to branch out into motoryacht sales, the company was renamed Stan Miller Yachts and has remained that since. Miller retired from the business in 1989 and
handed the reins to brothers John and Brad Buettner, who became partners with Miller in 1983. John joined the company in 1976 as a licensed and bonded broker. They have since grown the business’ scope and reputation. “It was an opportunity to join an industry leader that could not be refused,” Brad Buettner said. “Over the years, both Stan and Carolyn Miller demonstrated virtues such as kindness, friendship and enthusiasm for the marine industry that have been instrumental in my development and will have a lifelong impact on me. I will be forever grateful to them for their graciousness and willingness to allow me to be a part of the Stan Miller Yachts legacy.” Having been sailing since the 1930s on Newport Harbor, Miller couldn’t resist the urge in the early 1970s to purchase, with his partners, a New Zealand-built sailboat named Ragtime.
Stan Miller (middle) liked to spend time with John (left) and Brad Buettner at the business he built from the ground up.
With Miller as its captain, Ragtime was a regular on the regional racing circuit, winning the Transpacific Yacht Race two times, the Mallory Cup, the California Cup and others. Miller is remembered by the entire team at Stan Miller Yachts, his family, friends, and the sailing and boating communities of Long Beach, Calif., and Astoria, Ore., as well as the many people whose lives he touched.
