The Catalina Island Company: A Rich History of Enhancing Island Beauty and Tourism

CATALINA ISLAND — Three brothers, Willian, Hancock, and Joseph Banning, whose father, Phineas, was one of Southern California’s pioneering legends, had purchased Catalina in 1892 and placed the island and other assets into their new corporation to make Avalon an exciting and sustainable resort destination. It was in 1894 that the brothers incorporated the Catalina Island Company (then Santa Catalina Island Company).

Like previous owners of Catalina Island, including the founder of Avalon, George Shatto, the Banning’s were rather successful in their endeavors. Over the next two decades, they built roads, hotels, and several tourist attractions. However,

a 1915 fire consumed half of Avalon’s structures, including six hotels, bringing their company to the brink of bankruptcy. The brothers attempted to rebuild, opening Hotel St. Catherine in 1918 in Descanso Canyon. Still, mounting debt forced them to sell a large number of shares of their company a year later to a real estate development firm.

In 1921, one of those share owners, William Wrigley Jr, the chewing gum magnate who purchased his interest in the Island sight unseen, acquired most of the Banning’s share in the Catalina Island Company and began changing Island routines to move in a direction that would permanently preserve all of Santa Catalina Island’s natural state. The island’s beauty enchanted Wrigley and his family, who became determined to make the island an enduring part of their family’s legacy. Over the next 56 years, various conservation projects were ignited

by the Wrigley-run Catalina Island Company, including animal controls, watershed protection, and overgrazed landscape reseeding.

In 1921, he brought his beloved Chicago Cubs to Avalon, where they would hold spring training for the next 30 years. Wrigley also welcomed Hollywood to Catalina, which was often altered into a

backdrop for many movies of the 1920s and 30s, including “Mutiny on the Bounty,” which won the Oscar for best picture in 1932. Eventually, more than 500 movies, TV shows, documentaries, and commercials were filmed on and around the island throughout those years.

FAST FACTS

“Twenty-six miles across the sea Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me, Santa Catalina, the island of romance, romance, romance, romance. Water all around it ev’rywhere, tropical trees and the salty air, but for me the thing that›s a-waitin’ there’s romance.”

The song “26 Miles (Santa Catalina)” was released in 1958, and featured on the album The Capitol Collectors Series by the quartet The Four Preps. The song hit number two on the Billboard Hot 100, sold more than one million copies, and was dubbed “the first surfer hit” by Dick Clark.

The Four Preps was a quartet made of four teenage boys at Hollywood High School who were discovered at a school talent show and signed by Columbia Records. The four boys included lead singer Bruce Bellnad, bassist Ed Cobb, high tenor Marv Ingram, and baritone Glen A. Larson.

Belland recounted a dream where he paid a visit to the island but also drew inspiration for the song while bodysurfing at Will Rogers State Beach when a friend stated that Catalina Island was visible from 26 miles across the ocean. Fellow bandmate Larson also shares credit

for the lyrics. Other artists, including Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys and Jimmy Buffett, have been inspired by the song. The song was also one of many California-themed songs played throughout the “Sunshine Plaza” in the original Disney California Adventure theme park.

LOCAL West Side Floating Docks at Shelter Island Boat Launching Ramp Closed Due

to Structural Damage

Port is Expediting Repairs, Requests

Patience as Boaters Use Boat Launch Over Upcoming Holiday Week

SAN DIEGO — On June 29, the Port of San Diego announced that for public safety, the Port has closed the west side floating docks at the Shelter Island Boat Launching Ramp due to structural damage. The Port of San Diego’s engineering department and consultants are working quickly to assess the cause and extent of the damage, determine what repairs are needed, and to schedule repairs.

In the meantime, the Port urges boaters to use caution when using the boat launch ramp. The Port also requests patience as only the east side floating docks are accessible at this time, which may cause backups and delays, especially over the typically busy 4th of July holiday.

The Port will release additional information as it becomes available and will keep the public posted on when the west side floating docks are anticipated to reopen.

There are four boat launching ramps on San Diego Bay provided at no cost to boaters. In addition to Shelter Island, they are located at Pepper Park in National City, at Bayfront Park/J Street Marina Park in Chula Vista, and at Glorietta Bay in Coronado. For more information, go to portofsandiego.org/ boat-launching-ramps.

The Port of San Diego serves the people of California as a specially created district, balancing multiple uses on 34 miles along San Diego Bay, spanning five cities. Collecting no tax dollars, the Port manages a diverse portfolio to generate revenues that support vital public services and amenities.

The Port champions Maritime, Waterfront Development, Public Safety, Experiences, and Environment, all focused on enriching the relationship people and businesses have with our dynamic waterfront. From cargo and cruise terminals to hotels and restaurants, from marinas to museums, from 22 public parks to countless events, the Port contributes to the region’s prosperity and remarkable way of life on a daily basis.

STATE/NATIONAL/ INTERNATIONAL California Boaters Fight

300 Percent Increase in Registration Fees

CALIFORNIA — The Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC) is urging boaters to contact their State Senators and Assembly Members and request the rejection of Governor Newsom’s proposed 2023-24 budget, which is calling for a 300 percent increase in boat regis-

Boating fees have not increased in several years. According to BoatU.S., “RBOC, BoatU.S., and other recreational boating stakeholders have been engaged in a two-year process to review the state’s boating programs. While we anticipated there would be a modest increase; we expected the state to recognize the significant contribution boaters already make, such as $107 million in annual motor fuel taxes. It is our expectation that the fees and taxes paid by boaters go to fund boating programs. Unfortunately, that is not the case with the current proposal.”

According to the RBOC website, the annual income of the average California boat owner is $70,000 per year, and the number of registered vessels in California has seen a decrease. Several years ago, California had been ranked third in the number of registered boats by state, but today, it is ranked fifth.

“Local assessors have been drastically increasing the assessed value of vessels for local property tax purposes, regardless of their age,” said the RBOC website. “New marina developments are reducing the number of slips available for small boats. Boaters are being required to spend more money on less effective hull paints.”

ADVICE ask a maritime attorney

Can I be forced to participate in arbitration, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of participating?

I sold my boat last summer, but it apparently developed an engine problem after the sale. The buyer is trying to hold me responsible for the problem and he is trying to force me to participate in a binding arbitration procedure. The purchase contract did have a paragraph that discussed the arbitration of disputes, but there was no provision for me to initial the paragraph. Also, the arbitration paragraph said nothing about who would be conducting the arbitration, and I have heard some bad things about the outfit selected by the buyer. Can they force me to participate in the arbitration? If I do participate, what are the advantages and disadvantages of arbitration?

ANSWER: In this case, they can compel you to arbitrate the dispute, but they cannot force you to submit to an arbitration forum that you disagree with.

In California, the resolution of a dispute through binding arbitration cannot be compelled unless the parties have agreed to do so in writing. The written agreement may be set forth as a paragraph within a contract, and in some cases California law will require the parties to initial the paragraph, and require the paragraph to be formatted in a particular font or typeface. Agreements that many consumers are familiar with, such as an agreement to arbitrate a medical malpractice

When William Wrigley Jr. died in 1932, ownership of the company transferred over to his son Philip Knight Wrigley and daughter Dorothy Wrigley Offield. In 1972, the Wrigleys and Offields created the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy, then a private charitable foundation, and three years later, deeded 88 percent of Catalina’s interior and coastline to the foundation. The Catalina Island Conservancy thrives to this day as a non-profit organization. Its mission is ‘to be a responsible steward of its lands through a balance of conservation, recreation, and education.’ Under the stewardship and

guidance of third and fourth-generation descendants of William’s wife Ada a nd himself, the Catalina Island Company continues to offer a complete resort destination experience, including hotels, restaurants, a spa, water sports, camping, and a host of land and sea tours, activities and adventures that showcase Catalina’s culture, history, rugged wilderness, and unique marine ecosystem.

As the ICO continued to grow and develop from the goals of the two families who molded it, today that company invites tourists and residents to visit all n ine properties throughout Avalon, including the Pavilion Hotel, Hotel Atwater, Catalina Expeditions, Catalina Visitors Country Club, Catalina Island Gold

C ourse, Descanso Beach Club, Casino Ballroom, and Avalon Grille, as well as all operations located at the resort town of Two Harbors. Accommodations in Two Harbors include historic Banning House Lodge, Villa Santa Cruz, and Villa Santa Rosa, comfortable camping cabins, and four campgrounds that contest to be the best in all of California, each offering unique experiences that make Catalina’s west end the best end.

“The vision of the Catalina Island Company is to be recognized as a leader in providing exceptional individual and group experiences to our guests and visitors and be a respected business partner w ith our employees, suppliers, and community,” said Michelle Leslie, Director of Marketing for the Catalina Island Company, in an email to the Log. “Our vision – like our history on Santa Catalina Is-

We will use our resources (human, physical, financial, and natural) [sustainably] to implement the highest quality plans, designs, and developments that create properties of enduring value. Along with other stakeholders, we are committed to preserving the natural beauty and unique character of Santa Catalina Island. In Avalon, Two Harbors, and other holdings, we will work to develop a master-planned, quality island c ommunity that preserves our history, culture, and authenticity. The overall objectives of our efforts are to make Catalina Island in general, and ICO properties in particular, a premier southern California vacation experience.”

claim or a real estate dispute, are subject to these formatting requirements. Under most circumstances, however, an agreement to arbitrate a dispute is treated like any other term in the contract, and there are no particular formatting or initialing requirements. An agreement to arbitrate a dispute that arises from a boat purchase agreement must therefore be in writing, but there is no requirement for the parties to initial the paragraph.

Most yacht brokers in California include an arbitration clause within their form purchase contract. However, many different form contracts are used in California and the language of the arbitration provision can vary widely from broker to broker. The provision described in the reader’s question above is, frankly, an example of a poorly drafted contract. The contract called for the arbitration of disputes, but it did not require any particular arbitration forum, such as the American Arbitration Association, JAMS, or the California Yacht Brokers Associatiation. The parties in that case must either agree to a particular forum on their own, or file a lawsuit and ask a judge to sort it out. A party cannot be compelled to submit to the jurisdiction of an arbitration forum that he or she did not agree to in writing.

As a dispute resolution tool, arbitration probably has an equal number of critics and supporters. The value of the process relies almost entirely on the skill, knowledge, and dedication of the arbitrator. The most significant advantages to arbitration are speed and cost. Arbitration is much faster than traditional litigation, and a dispute will usually be resolved in a fraction of the time that would have been required in litigation. The filing fees in arbitration are much higher, and the arbitrator is paid a very nice fee by the parties. However, the overall cost of the process is usually less than litigation because of the abbreviated schedule and the elimination of many of the rules and procedures that are used in litigation.

The most significant drawback of arbitration is that, under California law, there is almost no avenue for appeal, even if the ruling by the arbitrator completely ignored the facts or the law. Federal law allows a small avenue for appeal, but as a practical matter it is not much better. This really highlights the importance of selecting the right arbitrator.

Finally, it is important to note that a party to a yacht purchase agreement is free to strike out any provision in the agreement that is disagreeable, including the arbitration clause. This action should not be taken lightly, since the other party to the agreement (the buyer or seller) may feel strongly about the provision, and a modification to the standard contract language could “kill” the deal. But like any contract, a yacht purchase agreement must reflect the terms and conditions that will work for both

parties, and an oversight during the negotiation period may lead to a headache in the future.

SCUBA, Snorkel, or Combine the two With SNUBA at Catalina Divers Supply

The Catalina Divers Supply has an option for divers of all levels. For those who are certified and experts, to those who have never done a dive, lessons, gear, and trips are all available at one location.

CATALINA ISLAND — Adventure awaits once you discover SCUBA diving, and the

Catalina Divers Supply can take you there. Since 1958, Catalina Divers Supply has been guiding divers through the underwater world surrounding Catalina, providing a f ull-service operation offering classes, guided dives, gear rental, sales, gear repair, and air fills.

C atalina Divers Supply, the oldest dive shop on the island, finds its newest dive center located on the ground floor o f the Casino Building and is also home to a retail store with dive-related merchandise, jewelry, clothing, and eco-friendly alternatives such as r eusable water bottles. Catalina Divers Supply also offers snorkeling tours and afternoon w ildlife cruises.

Dive experiences on Catalina Island are available for all levels of divers, from first-timers to d ive instructors. Firsttime divers will enjoy a Discover Scuba Experience, open to anyone ages ten and up who are comfortable in the water. This no-certification-required experience is led by a dive instructor, who will provide a safety briefing and accompany the diver throughout the underwater portion of the adventure.

“Discover Scuba is a great introduction to diving,” said Christy Lins, the owner of Catalina Divers Supply, the i sland’s only five-star PADI facility. “Participants get to see the kelp forest and many of the animals that live in the Casino Point Dive Park. Many

able Captain and Divemaster, where they can explore the kelp forest or come faceto-mask with bat rays, calico bass, moray eels, giant kelpfish, octopus, and many other local species.

According to Catalina Divers Supply, dives take a range of time. Experienced divers can often dive longer as they don’t consume air as fast as beginners. The Casino Point Dive Park is one of the most popular places to dive in North America, but Catalina Island offers many other f ascinating dive sites. Catalina Divers Supply provides day trips to many sites aboard the SCUBA Cat

For those new to the world of SCUBA, six different classes are offered, including open-water diving, advanced open-water

diving, rescue diving, dry suit diving, enriched air diving (which contains less nitrogen than regular air), and search and recovery diving. All courses are between 2-3 days and require and provide electronic circuits as well.

If you’re an experienced diver but don’t have gear, Catalina Divers Supply has you covered there too. SCUBA and snorkeling gear are available to rent through various packages. Tanks and weights are available, but you can also rent equipment a la carte.

D ivers can also hop on the SNUBA craze, a combination between SCUBA and snorkeling. SNUBA will take you 30 feet below the surface without all the gear and training that it takes to SCUBA. All you need to bring is a swimsuit, a towel, and an open mind.

D uring a scuba dive, participants

carry their air supply on their backs. SNUBA, which can be considered a cross between scuba and snorkeling, involves using a surface-based air supply.

“[SNUBA] is a great transition from snorkeling to scuba diving,” said Lins. “It’s a great activity for families to enjoy

together.

Catalina Marine Society Studies Marine Environment

nia and taking up recreational diving as a hobby, Gelpi applied his oceanography experiences from diving to the physics of remote sensing using very sophisticated machinery.

CATALINA ISLAND — Seventy-one percent of the Earth’s surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5 of all Earth’s water, making the marine environment a very significant focus for humans.

The Catalina Marine Society (CMS) is a non-profit membership corporation founded in 2009 in Los Angeles by scientist Craig Gelpi with a mission to marshal volunteer resources to study the marine environment of Catalina Island and the Southern California Bight. The Southern California Bight is a 692-kilometer-long stretch of curved coastline that runs along the west coast of the United States and Mexico, from Point Conception in California to Punta Colonet in Baja California, plus the area of the Pacific Ocean defined by that curve.

Since its beginning, the Catalina Marine Society has benefited the island in more ways than one. Projects and work give boaters and divers an excuse to go to the island and engage in assignments supporting local businesses, such as kayak rentals, dive stores, and restaurants. The island’s reputation spreads globally when the results of their work are published in international journals, and the findings showcase how unique Catalina is and how its location in the center of the Southern California Bight contributes to that uniqueness.

Gelpi has a B.S. in physics and math from Tulane University and a Ph.D. in physics (space physics) from the University of Houston. After moving to Califor-

“Wanting to do useful things with my diving, I sought organizations who were collecting data with divers,” said Gelpi in an email to the Log. “Then I found that the diving was fun, but the organizations had little capability to actually analyze the data they collected. The Catalina Marine Society was founded to provide that little extra structure needed to convert the fun of diving to useful scientific products.”

The Catalina Marine Society has several field programs that crucially depend on volunteers. These programs include the David Tsao Continental Thermograph Array, where volunteers deploy temperature recorders on the seabed off both the mainland and Catalina.

Currently, the Catalina Dynamic Ocean Chemistry program (sea-doc) needs divers and boaters to deploy underwater computers that measure ocean chemical parameters at their Dirk Burcham Scientific Mooring in Two Harbors and the Jim Updike Seabed Station. In addition to the projects, actions are needed to sustain such an organization, such as maintaining and expanding the website, organizing fundraisers and social events, helping with grant proposals, and recruiting students and professionals to analyze collected data. The Society has no paid staff, and everything is accomplished through volunteerism.

The CMS has achieved accomplishments, and one with the most significant impact is its analysis of how seasonal temperature changes with depth. From data gathered by temperature recorders deployed and retrieved around the island by hundreds of dives by the Catalina Island Conservancy, the CMS was able to figure out the rate of nutrient flows from the seabed to surface waters, where all plants from giant kelp and phytoplankton use the nutrients to grow and sustain the food web.

According to Gelpi, this nutrient flow process differs at Catalina from that found at the Northern Channel Is-

lands and the Northern and Central California Coasts due to Catalina’s unique location within the Southern California Bight. Surprisingly, the research found the numerical values for this flow are the same as required for mixing the very deep, cold water at the bottom of the ocean to the surface, a vital component of climate mechanisms. The oceanography community has expended much effort to measure this, for example, by dispersing chemicals in the water and observing how fast they mix in the water column, being performed economically using temperature measurements.

The Catalina Marine Society has several projects, including:

- The David Tsao Continental Thermograph Array

- The Monterey Bay Thermograph Array

- The Catalina Dynamic Ocean Chemistry program, including the Jim Updike Seabed Station, which was deployed in May this year.

“We also have the Remotely Determined Ocean Conditions (RDOC) program.,” said Gelpi. “Last year, we executed a large RDOC experiment within the Avalon Dive Park, where divers deployed instruments at the bottom that measured the height of waves while a camera above

the Casino recorded imagery of the ocean surface above the sensors. The objective is to figure out wave heights and wave directions using camera imagery. The work is ongoing and very promising. If successful, we hope eventually to monitor ocean conditions with cameras at beaches known to be hazardous, such as Monastery Beach near Pacific Grove up north, and give [a] warning when waves are particularly dangerous.”

Catalina Island Medical Center Does Big Things on a Small Island

AVALON — As Avalon’s only hospital, the Catalina Island Medical Center (CIMC) serves the clinical needs of Santa Catalina Island’s 4,500 residents as well as more than one million visitors who travel to the island each year.

CIMC’s Emergency Department evaluates and treats nearly 2,500 cases a year. The emergency room is staffed 24/7 by UC Irvine Emergency Medicine Physician and supported by the Medical Center’s laboratory and diagnostic imaging departments to meet the acute medical needs of Catalina Island’s residents and visitors. With the use of patient satisfaction surveys, patients consistently rank CIMC’s emergency services as one of the best in the nation.

“The roots of Catalina Island Medical Center go back to 1915 when a medical clinic was established in the Metropole Hotel,” said Chief Development Officer for the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation, Neil Macready. “In 1960, Avalon municipal hospital opened its doors at its current location on Falls Canyon Road. In 2000 the hospital formally became Catalina Island Medical Center which is the only medical facility on Catalina Island. It is the only medical Center for the residents and visitors.”

The newest CIMC addition is the recent expansion of a fitness center. The CIMC opened the doors to the new Catalina Island Fitness Center on June 12. As part of CIMC’s journey to increase the health and wellness of Catalina Island, CIMC launched a public, state-of-the-art CIMC Fitness Center in the Atwater Arcade to help residents stay active and fit. Discounted rates are available for Catalina Island residents holding subsidy cards.

In addition, day and monthly passes are offered, and a Fitness Center App is available for smartphones. The Center is open daily (except for holidays) from 7 a.m.- 7 p.m. To celebrate the new center’s opening, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place on July 13 from 4-6 p.m., followed by facility tours, refreshments provided by Café Metropole, and raffle prizes throughout the evening. The fitness center is located at 119 Sumner Ave., Suite E. Learn more at catalinaislandfitness.com. For more information on amenities and prices, please visit https://catalinaislandfitness.com/.

On Aug. 5, CMIC will host the 5th annual ‘Catalinaville’ Beach Party to benefit the CIMC Foundation. Proceeds will benefit the required seismic standards in California. As a result, a new hospital will be built adjacent to the Los Angeles Fire & Paramedics Station and directly across from Joe Machado Field in Avalon. Catalinaville will feature an open bar with hors d’oeuvres followed by a sit-down dinner at Descanso Beach Club, live bands, including a steel drum band during the reception, an 80s dance band at the beach party following dinner, and a live auction. Set for Saturday, Aug. 5, the event will be held at the Descanso Beach Club. The cocktail reception begins at 5 p.m., followed by the beach party at 8 p.m. All proceeds benefit the foundation and its support of a new medical center and the future of healthcare on Catalina Island.

“We are so grateful for our loyal sponsors and volunteers who make Catalinaville such an amazing event. We appreciate their commitment to improving healthcare on Catalina Island,” said Bryce Knoll, board chair of the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation.

The 46th Year of the Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race is Almost Here

The historic 32-mile paddleboard marathon, the Catalina Classic, which physically and mentally challenges participants, will cross the Catalina Channel on August 27.

CATALINA ISLAND — Mark your calendars for August 27 in preparation for the 46th year of the Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race. This event is considered a historical paddleboard event by participants and is organized and conducted by the Catalina Classic Paddleboard Association, Inc.

Since 1955, this 32-mile paddle-

board race has challenged humans from all over the world to cross the Catalina Channel in this historical and challenging race. Paddlers will depart from Isthmus Cove at 6 a.m. and paddle 32 miles to the Manhattan Beach Pier on paddle boards between 12-19 feet long. Racers must use only their hands to propel them through the water as they battle against swells, currents, and wind. The race must

be completed in 9 hours to qualify for completion.

The first paddleboard crossing through the Catalina Channel was completed in 1932 by three men— Pete Peterson, Wally Burton, and Tom Blake. The race was influenced by Tom’s efforts to promote his new paddleboard design.

According to the National Museum of American History, Blake introduced the patented hollow paddleboard in 1931, cutting the board weight in half and fueling the first boom in surfing as the lighter boards made surfing more accessible.

This board became a standard piece of life-saving equipment that went on to be used by lifeguards worldwide. In 1935, Blake’s second innovation was the stabilizing fin. Although it did not catch on in Hawaii for another five years, this advanced design inspired future board designs and became a board standard in 1940.

This original event was only held five times from 1955 to 1960. The event was canceled due to the pier’s construction and again in 1961 due to dangerous ocean conditions. After the death of Cliff Webster, who was the driving force and most significant promoter of the race, the city decided to end the race. As a result, marathon paddleboard racing went on a hiatus.

In 1982, LA County Lifeguard Lieutenant Karl “Buddy” Bohn was approached by the Manhattan Beach Historical Society to find and donate a 1950’s style paddleboard for their museum’s exhibition. While searching for a good rac-

Essex Marina City Club

ing board to present, many convinced Buddy to re-start the race, a responsibility the Chamber had been trying to give Buddy and other Lifeguard Association Directors for years. At last, Chamber executive Trudy Smart turned over the race by-laws and articles of incorporation. Buddy enlisted the support of some of the original channel paddlers, fellow county lifeguards, and Manhattan Beach resident Weldon “Gibby” Gibson to start the race again. Then, they put together the Catalina Classic 32-mile Paddleboard Marathon race. The rules were updated, changing the stock class board length from 14 feet to 12 feet. With the help of friends from the Catalina Channel Swim Federation, they garnered advice on the subject of logistics and safety as it related to channel crossings. Today the race is called The Catalina Classic.

Race registration is currently open and available at Paddleguru.com. Registration for open qualifiers will go until July 20. The Race Directors will attempt to fill all 100 entries based on pre-qualified applicants, open qualifier race results, and committee selections of international admissions. All open qualifiers will receive race entry confirmation or be refunded by July 31.

Chet’s Hardware— Family Owned and Island Dedicated

Chet’s Hardware on Catalina Island is a neighborhood staple for the residents and the mariners passing through.

CATALINA ISLAND — Originally opening its doors in 1962, Chet’s Harware founds itself in the hands of Edward and Patricia Cassidy, and the store quickly became an institution for the island. Fifteen years after opening the store, their son Mike Cassidy purchased it from them and has been running it with his wife since then. As one of Catalina’s oldest businesses and because of its unique location on an island, Chet’s Hardware expands beyond the standard stock of what the aisles of a hardware store have to offer and has become a useful shop for mariners and DIY-ers as well.

The original hardware store was owned by a man named Chet,” said owner Cinde Cassidy. “The family that purchased the store from Chet held the name during their tenure, and then when the Cassidys purchased the business back in the 70s, the store name was so popular they decided not to change the name. I love it when people say, “I spoke to your husband, Chet.” It’s funny and makes for a good smile.”

In June of 2020, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chet’s Hardware migrated from its original location to find a new home in what most recently was the Vons Express grocery store on C atalina Avenue. Prior to the Vons, the location was the Atwater Arcade. The move was finished in June after starting demolition on the location in January 2020.

“We absolutely love our new location, and it feels like moving “home,” if you will. We were able to create a Covid pod with our staff, and during the closures of the pandemic, we bonded together as a team to build the new location and move during an emotionally uncertain time. The move was much more positive [for]

us as we bonded as a team in ways we otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance to.”

The new location offers more shelf space for products that cater to the year-round traffic of boaters passing by, as well as the tools for home improvement for the residents on the island.

T he little hardware store has a 16’ space dedicated to marine supplies for the very present boating community that sees and lives on the island. Chet’s carries some basic items regularly but can also order items for those staying for a visit. In addition, the larger space allowed the store to introduce a 200-square-foot nursery filled with ever-changing flowers, fruits, and vegetables. In collaboration with the Catalina Island Conservancy, the nursey also offers plats that are native to the island. Chet’s also offers a locksmith service and will make special orders upon request and appliance replacement.

C het’s Hardware is the handyman’s toy store and offers a collection of products for any project. For more informa-

tion on the store or to get in contact, please visit https://www.chetshardware. com/.

Sponsorship for the event ranges between $5,000- $50,000, and upon availability, a single ticket is $625, and couples tickets are $1,250.

In addition, exciting news came to the Medical Center this past January. On Jan. 18, UCI Health and CIMC announced a clinical affiliation between the University of California, Irvine’s leading academic health system, and Catalina Island’s sole emergency, primary, and acute care services provider. The affiliation builds on a collaboration launched in 2016 when UCI Health began providing emergency medicine specialists to expand care in the Medical Center’s emergency department. The CIMC emergency department evaluates and treats 2,600 cases yearly, a 33 percent increase since the UCI Health collaboration began seven years ago. In addition, patients have consistently ranked CIMC’s emergency services as among the best in the nation.

In June 2017, the CMIC finalized the purchase of Leo’s Catalina Drugstore, long known and loved by locals as the “uncommon corner drugstore.” Adding Catalina Island’s only pharmacy to its portfolio of services enabled the CIMC to continue to provide outstanding healthcare services to the community and make improvements. Leo’s operates as an independent local pharmacy, serving the community’s needs, with little change in how it performs under CIMC, including insurance relationships.

The integration of Leo’s also allows the CIMC to improve the quality of life for those undergoing specific cancer treatments, with the eventual provision of infusion therapy for chemotherapy patients. This makes it easier for patients to receive care at home without traveling to the mainland for cancer treatment.

The CIMC announced on June 19 that Leo’s Pharmacy is offering each child in your family a free 30-count bottle of Health Mart® Children’s Chewable Multi-Vitamins each month. Call or visit Leo’s to enroll at (310) 510-0189.

Welcome Aboard the Catalina Express

Catalina Island is entering its prime season for visitors, and the Catalina Express fleet gives passengers multiple options for making the 22-mile journey to the island getaway.

CATALINA ISLAND — Depending on where you’re departing from, roughly 22 miles from the Southern California coast is an oasis that feels like another country. Catalina Island is a must-see summertime destination, and there is one ride that is overqualified to get you there— the Catalina Express.

Founded in 1981, Catalina Express is celebrating 42 years of service to the Catalina community and visitors of the vacation destination. The fleet is comprised of four catamarans and four monohulls that feature sleek hulls, stabilizers that smooth out 90 percent of the roll, and high-tech navigational equipment and radio communications systems for safe channel crossing.

Departing from three different mainland locations, including San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point, the Catalina Express and its crew are qualified to complete up to 30 departures a day, 365 days a year, taking passengers to and from the Island in just about an hour. The Catalina Express fleet of eight vessels are all e quipped with food, drinks, and facilities that will get you to the small boutique town of Avalon or the hidden village of Two Harbors.

Catalina Express vessels range in capacity from its monohulls that carry 149 pa ssengers to the largest catamaran in the fleet, Catalina Jet, which carries 450 passengers. According to Catalina Express team member Amanda Bombard, passengers pack various items for their trip to Catalina Island.

“ Some share their Catalina experience with their pets, which have to be secured in an airline-style pet carrier or be leashed and have on a full-face commercial manufactured muzzled while in the t erminal and onboard the vessel. Visitors like to explore the outdoors and bring their bikes or surfboard to use while on Catalina,” said Bombard. “These items must be included as part of the reservation, as the ferry has limited space. Both have a fare of $3.50 each way per article. Surfboards and standup paddle boards must be under 9 feet long. For other questions about what to pack on your trip to Catalina or what is allowed on the ferry, please visit CatalinaExpress.com or give us a call at 310.519.1212.”

Avalon is filled with boutique shopping and hotels, recreational water and land activities, and open-concept restaurants and bars for visitors who like indulging in a vacation with ocean views. Two Harbors is a rustic village with

campgrounds and beaches for guests who desire the outdoors.

Round-trip tickets on the Catalina Island Express Ferry cost $84 per adult, w hich includes the fare, the wharfage fee, and taxes. Senior passengers 55 and over can ride for a discounted rate of $77 round-trip. Children between 2-11 years old ride for $68.50. Babies under two are not required to purchase a ticket, but you must still pay the $7.00 wharfage fee.

If departing from Dana Point, guests will take off from the offices of Dana Wharf Sportfishing located in the Dana Point Harbor for a trip that takes about an hour and a half. Guests can park briefly in the short-term lot to purchase their tickets and parking pass for the long-term lot. For the sailings between June 17- Sept. 5, it is suggested to allow an extra 30 minutes to move your car to long-term parking and walk back or shuttle to the Catalina Express dock.

If departing from Long Beach, guests will take off from Downtown Long Beach along the waterfront by the Pike and the Aquarium of the Pacific near Shoreline Village. This trip is roughly an hour long. Overnight parking is allowed, and reservations are not required, but vehicles m ay not be parked for more than 30 days without a written license agreement made prior. Prices are subject to change but expect to pay about $23 daily.

For those departing from San Pedro, you will be docking at the Catalina Sea and Air Terminal located in the heart of the waterfront promenade in the LA Port. From San Pedro to Avalon, that will cost you about an hour and fifteen minutes, and if you want to continue to Two Harbors, you can expect to add another 45 minutes of travel time. The San Pedro location is the only vessel that travels to Two Harbors. Parking is free for the first

hour and then will increase to $2 per hour, with a maximum daily fee of $20. For more information about the Cata-

lina Express, Catalina Island, or to book a trip, please visit https://www.catalinaexpress.com/.

The Catalina Museum for Art & History: The gatekeeper of the Island’s Chronicles

Catalina Island has secrets to share, and they can be told at the Catalina Museum for Art & History.

CATALINA ISLAND — When crafting your itinerary for your Catalina Island vacation, include a visit to the Catalina Museum for Art & History. The Museum has been snuggly tucked away on Metropole Avenue in Avalon since 2016 after relocating from its original 1953 location on the ground level of the Casino.

The Museum is the Island’s knight in shining armor, protecting the art and history that will long tell the stories of Catalina. A ticket into the Museum will familiarize visitors with the rich history of t he Island, like the time when the Chicago Cubs had practiced on the Island or its role in World War II when the Island served as a training center for the U.S. Maritime Service. In addition to the historical exhibits that inhabit the Museum’s showrooms, there are also rotating exhibits.

“Our main special exhibition for the summer is Tall Tiki Tales: Catalina as a South Seas Island,” the Museum’s Deputy Director of External Affairs said, Gail Fornasiere, in an email to the Log. “It explores Catalina Island’s contribution (as a film set) in the popularization of tiki culture—tracing the origins from adventure books, their adaptations into Hollywood films, to the subsequent South Seas-themed restaurants and bars that dotted the country beginning in the 1930s. The role that the Isthmus and Avalon played in the development of this aspect of American culture is immeasurable. Plus, the guest cu-

rator for the exhibition is Sven Kirsten, who literally wrote the book on the history of tiki.”

S kirting Issues: Hula Moves Stateside is another display that complements the tiki exhibition. The exhibit spotlights hula via original artifacts, music, and related ephemera, including historical photographs exploring the Hawaiian craze of the late 1890s to the present day. Visitors are invited to dance through the gallery and directly into challenging histories of authenticity, American colonialism, appropriation, collaboration, and resistance.

The next exhibit to hit that floor is called Cabinet of Curiosities: 70 Objects for 70 Years. This exhibit will show-

The Catalina Island Conservancy Conserves, Educates, and Entertains

Catalina Island is one of the eight Channel Islands located off the Southern California Bight, spanning only 22 miles in length, with its widest point only eight miles across and only 22 miles off the Southern California coast. It is a tourist destination for those from far away but u nique enough to make locals feel like they are far away.

T his special haven is home to more than 60 endemic species of plants and animals, all requiring protection, restoration, and conservation from the foot traffic and tourism the Island sees yearround. As one of the oldest and largest private land trusts in the state of California, the Catalina Island Conservancy opens its wildlands to the public to enjoy in different ways.

Founded in 1972, the Conservancy protects 88 percent of the Island’s approximately 48,000 acres, including the r egion’s longest publicly accessible undeveloped coastline. The Conservancy h as provided access to recreational activities such as camping, biking, hiking, a nd touring. It conserves the Island by ensuring resiliency, restoring habitats, implementing wildlife programs, collaborating with partners in academia and research, and offering paid internships for students.

Memberships are available for those who have the drive to partner with the Conservancy. Becoming a member will

allow you to contribute to programs focusing on conservation, education, and recreation, the three pillars the Conservancy stands on. In addition, volunteering is an option for helping and attending a nnual events t hat raise money, like the popular Conservancy Ball, which attracts nearly 400 guests annually to raise f unds for conservation efforts.

Self-Driving Boat Maps Underwater terrain

Have you ever seen cars driving around with big fancy cameras on their roof to map out streets for software like Google Maps and Apple Maps? Well, that same technique and technology is being applied to boats and the seafloor.

Researchers at The University of Texas at El Paso have created a fully autonomous boat to carry out bathymetric surveys. Bathymetric surveys allow us to measure the depth of a water body as well as map the underwater features of a water body. The team hopes the motorized boat can simplify the survey process, which usually takes a crew of individuals to complete and assist with reconnaissance missions.

“If you want to work in water-related studies, you need to know the shape and landscape of bodies of water,” said Laura

is a Paint and Sip night. The December, January, and February events are typically held virtually.

The Museum opened in 1953 - 70 years ago, making it one of the oldest non-profits on the Island. It was started by a group of community members, including Philip K. Wrigley, all of who were concerned the Island’s history was getting lost. They also felt passionate that the Island’s visitors should learn about its history to appreciate this little Island in the Pacific better.

“For 63 years, the museum was located in the ground level of the Casino building where Catalina Divers Supply is now,” said Fornasiere. “In 2016, we moved into our new permanent home at 217 Metropole Avenue in the heart of Avalon. As a private, non-profit 501(c)3, we raised all the funds to purchase the property and construction of the building from private individuals and foundations. Our name was always Catalina Island Museum, but we re-branded in 2021 and changed our name to Cata-

Alvarez, Ph.D., lead author of the study, and an assistant professor in UTEP’s Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences.

Alvarez is an expert in unmanned systems for earth science and began developing the boat years ago but needed help working out kinks and perfecting the system. That prompted her to recruit science and electrical engineering master’s student Fernando Sotelo ‘22.

“The first time we tested the boat was at the swimming pool at UTEP — just to make sure it could float,” laughed Sotelo, study co-author and now UTEP alumnus.

Over a year, Sotelo refined the aluminum watercraft, a 3-foot-by-3-foot circular craft that rests on a thick black inner tube, testing it in various environments.

Sotelo’s goals included boosting the boat’s hours of operation and reliability and making it fully autonomous and responsive to potential environmental factors like wind speed and temperature flux. A fail-safe can detect when batteries are low, or wind gusts are too high and trigger a return-to-base function.

The rudderless watercraft operates with four thrusters, allowing it to travel up to 5 feet per second and easily rotate 360 degrees. A solar panel and lithium battery will enable the boat to last up to four hours at sea — covering an area of up to 472,400 square feet.

The vessel features a multi-beam echo sounder, a sonar system that casts sound waves from the bottom of the boat. Water depth can be calculated by the time it takes for the sound wave to water to hit the seafloor and return to the sonar system. The sound that returns to the device can help detect the type of material on the seafloor.

Alvarez has put the instructions to

lina Museum for Art & History. We felt that change better reflected what your experience will be when you visit. Our museum is the only institution dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the Island’s history, but we’ve also been collecting art from the very beginning. When we opened the new building, we were able to have that art help tell the Island’s history and bring special exhibitions (histo-

replicate the boat online. “The reason we wrote the paper was so that anyone can reproduce it by themselves,” she said. “It serves as an effective guideline to get

ry and art) to the Avalon community and its visitors. We have just about completed a renovation project in which we have added a multi-purpose room to be used for our educational programming (current and planned).

Going Up— A “Kelp Elevator” on Catalina Island Could Produce Clean Energy

CATALINA ISLAND — The United States needs billions of tons of biomass annually for biofuel. Biomass, in the context of energy production, is matter from recently living organisms that are used for bioenergy production, and biofuel is a fuel that is produced over a short period from biomass rather than by the prolonged natural processes involved in the formation of fossil fuels, such as oil.

While corn, soybeans, and other crops are the most common source, a new theory has entered the chat and is being tested off Catalina Island.

Diane Y Kim, the associated director of special projects at the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies, believes a breakthrough has been made. In 2019, Marine Biology, Inc. and USC researchers began testing the idea of harvesting kelp in the open ocean as a new biofuel source.

Kelp is one of the fastest-growing

Crossword

plants. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in ideal conditions, kelp can grow up to 18 inches per day, and in stark contrast to the colorful and slow-growing corals, the giant kelp canopies tower above the ocean floor. The investigation is being led by the theory that kelp is potentially perfect for making bioethanol, but it grows in sunlight-soaked water. Surface water in the open ocean lacks nutrients compared to the concentration of nutrients in deeper waters. The process of utilizing both depths of water is now called the “kelp elevator.”

A test buoy and a winch have been placed off the coast of Catalina Island, where USC biologists have attached kelp to an underwater boom. For 104 days, the contraption let the kelp bathe on the water’s surface during the day to absorb sunlight and was drawn into deep nutrient-rich depths at night.

A 2019 study found that the kelp not only survived in the lower depths but also grew four times faster once it returned to

the surface.

A plan is being developed to build an ocean farm using solar-powered drone submarines to harvest the kelp four times a year without the standard farming requirements of land, fresh water, fertil-

izers, and pesticides. This process could mean millions of tons of biomass replacing liquid fossil fuels.

The CSR is one of the most premier water ski races in the world, but the CSR is more than just a race. The annual CSR is a competition where contestants travel at speeds greater than 60 mph and up to 90 mph from Long Beach to Catalina Island for a total of 62 miles of racing— a test that is as mental as physical. This year, the event’s title sponsor is Delta Marine along with 22 other sponsors.

With its rich history, quality of competition, and challenge of the open ocean, the CSR earned its place in the worldwide spotlight.

Water skiers from around the globe come to participate. This race has notoriety because of the number of participants and because it is the only open-ocean ski race regularly scheduled anywhere in the world. It is a unique challenge to compete across 62

Skipper Science and Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation Launch New Seabird and Gillnet Interaction Observation Project

The observations logged on a smartphone app by fishermen regarding seabird interactions contribute to Alaska salmon sustainability certification.

JUNEAU, AK — The Skipper Science Partnership and Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation (AFDF) are partnering on a new project to understand gillnet and seabird interactions within Alaska salmon fisheries. The pilot project officially launched this summer

on July 1. Through a citizen science approach that directly involves fishermen logging observations in real-time via the Skipper Science Smartphone App, the data collected can shed light on seabird interactions within the fishery.

SkipperScience is a citizen science project that allows observations and data to be recorded by fishermen using a mobile smartphone app, providing non-scientists in remote locations with a way to systematically record and share environmental and biological data as well as information on fishing practices from their vessels in real-time while fishing.

Notably, the program aims to center community voices in fisheries research and management by providing a method to bridge and communicate data among various organizations and communities.

“Alaska fishermen have been informally observing and documenting fish-

eries and ecosystem data for decades and are local experts in their own right,” said Hannah-Marie Garcia, ISN and Skipper Science Program Coordinator at Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Tribal Government, in a press release. “The Skipper Science Partnership recognizes this, and we work to connect this lived experience to researchers and managers by using cutting-edge technology to help facilitate [dialogue] and communicate observations directly from the fishing grounds.”

“We are thrilled to be piloting the seabird interaction project with Skipper Science and salmon fishermen this summer,” said AFDF Development Director Hannah Wilson in the press release. “This project fulfills data needs for continued Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainability certification of Alaska Salmon Fisheries. It is incredibly powerful to have a mechanism for [real-time] fisher-

possibilities for exploring new and picturesque waterways. With a generous weight capacity, it accommodates individuals of varying sizes and allows for transporting essential gear, making the Flip-Kat the perfect companion for unforgettable recreational experiences.

ies data that can be used to verify interactions between gillnetters and seabirds for the continuation of an MSC certification, and we are thrilled to see our fishermen already uploading data entries in [real-time].”

BLUEFIN TUNA AND YELLOWFIN TUNA HIGHLIGHT OFFSHORE FISHING!

• Bluefin tuna have been providing Southern California offshore anglers with some fun fishing for the past few months but things are getting even better with a recent influx of yellowfin tuna that are now biting in some of the same areas where anglers are targeting bluefin. When you add the chance at finding some kelp paddy yellowtail in offshore waters there is even more variety available out on the offshore fishing grounds. Anglers are hoping that even more species will soon be coming our way as the summer progresses in the way of dorado, skipjack, striped marlin and swordfish. I am sure some anglers (including myself) are still hoping for a showing of albacore in our local offshore waters and with the water being a bit cooler so far this year who knows what great fun might lie ahead.

• The bluefin tuna are being found in two general areas. There is a northern sector where there are 25 to 200-plus pound bluefin biting in areas around and above the West End of San Clemente Island that include the 499 Spot, the Snail Bank, 4 to 12 miles northwest over

to west of the West End of San Clemente Island and the Mackerel Bank.

• The other main bluefin zone is more local to San Diego and has been producing 20 to 80 pound bluefin and is also producing a few yellowtail along with improving numbers of 20 to 60 pound yellowfin tuna. The past couple of days of fishing in this more southern zone have seen the bluefin move up closer to San Diego to where

the best fishing in this southern sector is currently being found in the region of the 9 Mile Bank and the area ranging from 2 to 8 miles southwest to west of North Island.

• Bluefin have had the tendency to bite best during night time hours but the day time hours can also produce good catches. Flylined sardines, sinker rigged sardines, kite fished flying fish, knife jigs, trolled Nomad Madmac jigs and slow trolled sardines have been working well for bluefin. The yellowfin have been biting on flylined sardines that are fished around kelp paddies, porpoise schools, in bluefin stops, in yellowfin trolling

stops and around spots of working tern birds. Cedar plugs have been reported to be working best for yellowfin on the troll.

• The fishing at Los Coronado Islands has been good for a mixed bag of barracuda, yellowtail and an assortment of bottom fish species. Solution
