DON’T COUNT ON LUCK PERHAPS THE LUCKIEST PERSON I ever saw

on a boat can be an object lesson for every reader of this magazine. He was a friend of mine — still is, fortunately — who experienced a frightening man-overboard incident. Not frightening for its longevity or sea state or potential for freezing, but for its unbridled dumbassery. We were both passengers in a 24-footer, along with several other people. We’d been drinking, boating and skiing most of the day. I’m certain the owner/operator was beyond tired of dealing with the inebriated crew of 20-something derelicts. And it was about to get worse. On a stretch of the Colorado River below the Parker Dam, we had been barhopping via boat after dark. My recollection is hazy — this was more than 20 years ago — as to whether we were on a high-speed run to another establishment or headed back to the house some of the guys had rented. What I remember clearly is my buddy sitting on the gunwale toward the stern. His rear end was on the portside rail. His feet were wedged under the lip of a settee. He was leaning his torso out over the water, soaking himself in the spray of the wake coming off the side of the hull. Not satisfied with marinating in the spray, he leaned farther back, and then farther. His back was soon arching, his head closing the distance between it and the wake, his shirt now soaked. The rest of the monkeys in

this unlicensed circus hooted with laughter, louder as my buddy’s lean-backs became more brazen. He was playing to the crowd. With a flair, he leaned back as far as he could. And he was gone. The rail was empty. I couldn’t breathe. Our chorus of “holy this” and “what the that” alerted the driver something was amiss. He immediately turned around and we hunted for a person in the water. It took just a few moments to locate him and get him back aboard, and he was fine, having managed to avoid hitting his head on the hullside or smacking the water at an angle that could have caused injury. He lost only a pair of glasses and an indeterminate amount of dignity, but the river had plenty of activity at the time. Not a daytime volume of boats, fortunately, but enough activity that we had to worry. The cloak of idiocy was wrapped tightly around all of us that night, and we emerged about as lucky as anyone could have. As the season reaches its height, be careful on crowded waterways and on passages to islands distant and near. The driver especially needs to eschew alcohol until the day’s journey is finished, and even the crew needs to check itself. It doesn’t take much to go from the center of attention to the focus of a search.

Social activity is very likely to center around the yacht’s highpoint, the flybridge. Up there, a doublewide helm seat, a C-shaped companion settee and an L-shaped dinette aft of the helm will comfortably seat 10 people, who will enjoy 360-degree views under a hardtop with a sunroof. Except to use the head, people may never leave the flybridge. In the main cabin, the galley and an L-shaped dinette occupy the aft half, which blends seamlessly with the cockpit when the glass doors are completely open. Forward is a C-shaped settee to port, opposite the helm, and an alcove with a cabinet and easyto-move ottoman-style seats (per owner needs and wants). Three staterooms are belowdecks, and there is space for crew quarters beneath the cockpit. A forward VIP and a starboard-side guest cabin take care of four passengers. Amidships, spanning the beam, is the master. All three staterooms have an en suite head, with the guest head serving as the day head too. Twin MAN V-8 diesels — 1,000 or 1,200 hp — can push the yacht to a 30-knot top speed and cruise comfortably at 24 to 26 knots.

MORE Interior spaces, natural light and passenger views are all enhanced on the new MCY 66.

High-end fabrics, natural stone surfaces, Italian leather, copper accents and other touches indicate luxury. What else would one expect from a yacht builder with Monte Carlo in the name (and Nuvolari Lenard helping with the design)? Throw in extensive use of natural light, even belowdecks thanks to expanded portholes and hull windows, and the MCY 66 from Monte Carlo Yachts is a bright, airy, open 66-footer with a modern décor and more of a traditional profile. Given a day with pleasant conditions, most of the passengers may never see the inside of the yacht. The open but mostly covered cockpit features a transom

MEXICO REPORT

By CAPT. PAT RAINS

KNOW WHERE TO HIDE

Boaters spending the summer in Mexico should check out my four favorite hurricane hideouts in the upper Sea of Cortez. SUMMERTIME, AND THE LIVING is easy.

But it’s past mid-July, so recreational boaters in the Sea of Cortez right now should have solid plans about where they’ll spend the peak months of this hurricane season — August, September, October — in safety and comfort. For example, boat owners anywhere in the lower and mid-latitudes of the Sea of Cortez should already have slip reservations in at least one of the hurricane-refuge marinas at La Paz or Puerto Escondido in Baja California Sur, or at San Carlos in Sonora. Otherwise, anyone still in La Paz should be cruising north to at least Puerto Escondido, which is another very popular hurricane hole. Boaters not summering over in the

8

marina there should plan to continue past Santa Rosalia (not a hurricane hole) to reach summer safety farther north. Mazatlan on the mainland side of the Sea of Cortez probably shouldn’t be considered a hurricane hole, due to the frequency of cyclonic storms that curve off the Pacific and slam into this coast between 22 and 24 degrees north. Most years, boaters berthed in the popular marinas tucked back into Sabalo Lagoon have reported no problem, but it’s “luck of the draw,” and even those marinas usually are booked full by now. Otherwise, some folks at Mazatlan might head north to the San Carlos area, which has two hurricane-hole marinas and dry storage yards.

WHY THE UPPER SEA OF CORTEZ?

The lower and mid-latitudes of the Sea of Cortez are vulnerable to tropical-storm winds and torrential rains that flood coastal areas, so folks not already hunkered down in one of those hurricane holes should head to the upper third of the Sea of Cortez, north of a line between Santa Rosalia and Guaymas. Very few hurricanes can travel up the narrow north-south length of the Sea of Cortez, nor can they jump over the Baja California peninsula and reform with sufficient strength to travel north again. Having summered over here 10 times on several different boats, I’ve created a list of four favorite places to hide out during hurricane season in the upper Sea of Cortez. Each is near a hurricane hole, should the need arise to scoot there quickly. They have access to provisions, fuel, and a few diversionary side trips for the stretches when a hurricane isn’t threatening.

Puerto Penasco, Sonora , in the northeast corner of the Sea of Cortez, is an actual port, finally, and is the safest hurricane hole in Mexico due to its latitude and geography. This town of 27,000 people boasts three small marinas, two fuel docks with diesel and gas, seven haulout yards, good provisioning, hospitals, chandlers, an international airport, air-conditioned movie theaters, and scads of restaurants that feature the region’s mainstay: shrimp. The U.S. border is only 65 miles north, so hundreds of gringos find it practical to keep their boat here over the summer while they scoot home. I counted only 50 yacht slips, and they fill up fast. But because the tidal range is extreme this far north (23 feet max at springs), the enclosed commercial port actually shrinks at low tide, providing almost no room for moorings or anchoring. The best plan is to store boats safely on the hard. Cabrales Boatyard in the harbor’s northwest corner specializes in yachts, uses 150-ton Travelifts with padded straps and coordinates with international boat movers to truck yachts up to the U.S., or down.

2 1 4 Santa Rosalia

The four marked hurricane hideouts in the upper Sea of Cortez, including Puerto Penasco (pictured left), which is the only real port in the area, all provide the necessary refuge from potential summer storms.

San Francisquito is a gorgeous multi-

ple-anchorage destination 75 nautical miles up the Baja coast from Santa Rosalia. The main bay is large, and three small adjacent coves provide fun dinghy expeditions; all four provide rare protection from summer southerlies and are graced by crystal turquoise waters and white sand bottoms. A 1-mile outer beach roadstead is good in north wind. All this is within a 3-mile radius. A dirt airstrip (1,200 yards) gets an occasional fly-in fishing group, and two rustic campgrounds on the south beach may have limited gasoline and water. San Francisquito enjoys the solitude of lying 60 unpaved miles from Baja Highway 1, but it’s a popular stepping stone for all boats crossing the Sea of Cortez via the Midriff Islands, which are within sight. The nearest hurricane hole is 53 miles northwest at Puerto Don Juan, near L.A. Bay.

Puerto Refugio, or Port of Refuge, is not a port; it’s a picturesque sheltered bay that spreads two and a half miles across the north tip of Guardian Angel Island, an uninhabited behemoth. Tucked inside like a cluster of jewels in a purse are nine pristine anchoring areas that provide swinging room for about 20 boats total. The anchoring areas are nestled between four little islands, two fun diving reefs and two low peninsulas that slope down from the island’s rugged 3,000-foot peak. Supplies can be found 35 miles south at Bahia de los Angeles, better known as L.A. Bay, which offers diesel, gas, groceries, restaurants, a hospital, an airport and 20 modest hotels that serve trailerboating fishermen who truck here from Highway 1. About 50 small anchoring spots lie between Refugio and L.A. Bay. Five miles east of L.A. Bay is the nearest hurricane hole, Puerto Don Juan. Again, it’s really not a port but rather a small uninhabited bay with a dog-leg entrance, but it does have room for 40 boats to swing comfortably and is nearly impregnable to storm winds and seas from all directions.

Bahia Sargento (“sar-HEN-tow”) is a pristine 3-mile-wide turquoise bay between two sparkling white sand spits. Sargento lies within the indigenous Seri tribal reservation, so it’s all sacred land, including Tiburon Island, where the Seri people believe their spirits live. No one can fish or explore ashore without a Seri guide, easily hired on VHF Channel 16 in Kino Bay or Chuenque. Enter Sargento Bay from the northwest, swing wide of the little reef off Punta Sargento and anchor off the northern beach in 15 to 18 feet of clear water. In the shallow tidal lagoon behind this beach it’s possible to watch Seri families set handmade fishing nets. Distinguished by their native dress (traje), the Seri often camp ashore here. But unlike typical Mexican pangueros, they seldom initiate contact with outsiders, except during their annual Sea Turtle Ceremony.

It’s also It’s also a good idea to have the equipment a good idea to have the equipment model and model and serial number for the unit (or serial number for the unit (or system). system).

ELECTRONICS TROUBLESHOOTING Know how to diagnose issues that can crash a boat’s electronics.

ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT PROBLEMS ALWAYS seem to crop up at the worst possible time.

The chartplotter bites the dust on the way out for a day of fishing, or the depthsounder blanks out during a transit of some questionable channel. Tech support is a wonderful thing, but self-reliance and the ability to recognize and fix simple problems is even better. A few basic troubleshooting tips can help bring ailing electronics back online. The first step in troubleshooting any system or piece of electronics gear is something owners should have done before the problem even arose: read the owner’s manual. Having a basic understanding of how the gear or system functions and is installed (e.g., a block diagram) before troubleshooting begins is extremely helpful in recognizing and locating common problems. Most manuals have a basic troubleshooting section, which can get things moving.

THE BASICS

When a piece of electronics gear fails to turn on, start by checking the power connection at the unit for looseness or corrosion. If the DC power panel has a voltmeter installed, take a quick look to verify it shows the correct voltage and that all required breakers are on. How many of us have realized a “problem” was actually caused by a battery switch or circuit breaker being in the off position? For electronics that work intermittently or lose certain functions, check the remaining 10

plugs or wire connections, which can also suffer from corrosion or come loose over time due to vibration. As odd as it may sound, some problems can be corrected by simply disconnecting cable plugs and plugging them back in. The same is true for inline cable connections, which can loosen due to excessive movement or vibration if not secured or mounted properly. Trace the cable runs to see if there any problems such as breaks or damage.

VISIBILITY

If a unit powers up but nothing shows on the display, start simple and check the display brightness and contrast settings. These settings often get adjusted on purpose — to preserve night vision, for example — or by accident to the point where the display is no longer visible under different lighting conditions. Other control features can generate what I like to call “operator induced anomalies.” If the radar fails to pick up targets, for example, verify it’s on the correct range setting and that the gain/sensitivity features are adjusted correctly.

SEAMAGAZINE.COM AUGUST 2019

+ Sea Experts new3.indd 10

7/1/19 6:43 AM

Monitor the DC panel’s voltmeter (or use a handheld one) while keying the radio to see if the voltage drops.

NMEA 2000

While standalone electronics will have their own dedicated power plug or source, newer electronic systems will likely be powered by an NMEA 2000 (N2K) trunk

FRIEN DLY

If all the connections are verified to be tight but the problem persists, it’s time to get technical, break out the multimeter and look for hardware problems. Every boat should have a multimeter aboard. Seriously, they can be purchased for as little as $6 at stores such as Harbor Freight. Stay away from light pen–type voltage testers; they can measure if there’s voltage but not how much, which is a critical troubleshooting flaw, because many electronics fail to operate if the voltage drops below a certain point. To check the power to a piece of gear, turn the unit off and disconnect the power plug or access the terminal strip where power is connected. Then verify that battery switches and breakers are in the on position. Set the multimeter to DC volts and measure the voltage by connecting the meter’s negative probe to the equipment plug negative lead and the positive probe to the positive lead. (A reversal of the probes will cause the meter to display a negative reading.) A voltage reading of “0” indicates no power is reaching the unit, pointing to an issue such as a tripped breaker, a blown fuse, a loose connection or a broken wire. Note one thing: If a fuse “blows” multiple times when replaced, it should be considered a symptom rather than the problem. A low voltage reading indicates low battery voltage or possibly additional resistance in the line, such as a corroded or faulty connection. Verify that the correct amount of power is leaving the breaker panel, then work toward the equipment to identify the problem. If the voltage is incorrect, then verify the battery voltage is correct and proceed from there. Another thing to consider is how steady or consistent the voltage is during equipment operation. Some electronics draw more power during certain operations; a VHF radio when it is transmitting vs. receiving is one example. While it may show a “full” 12 volts at the power plug when the radio is disconnected or simply turned on, that voltage can drop well below a usable level when the radio is keyed to transmit. This is often due to a weak battery or possibly a corroded connection.

ECO

VOLTAGE CHECKS

or backbone. If the system is installed correctly and was working previously — and the voltage supply is correct and all the plugs and connections are good — then the problem could be with the backbone itself. Meters that allow owners to test N2K backbones are pricey, more than $600. If the problem lies with the backbone, it’s likely time to call in a professional.

32 WALKAROUND

Outboard power and weekending ability combine on a family- and angler-friendly 50+ mph platform.

edged past 50 mph — it was really the GPS readout on the Garmin GPSMap 7616 multifunction display — I began to think we really might get airborne. That’s the word Capt. Dago Gonzalez had used in our discussion at the dock, when the Belzona 32 Walkaround was calmly bobbing in the water near the Shelter Island Boat Launch in San Diego. I figured he said it a bit hyperbolically, as in it’s going to feel like we get airborne. Then he spotted the ferry. Now, I can’t say for sure the lower unit of both Mercury Verado 350 hp outboards came out of the water, but I’m pretty

AS THE PROVERBIAL NEEDLE

certain the boat did. Not the first time I’d been in a boat that did that, obviously, but I always wait for the landing. Is it going to be hard? Likely. But is it going to last? Meaning will the hull absorb the landing at once and move on, or will the landing reverberate through the hull for a few seconds as the boat regains its speed? Think of any slow-motion video of a big-bellied dude taking a fist to the gut, where the ripples continue for a bit.

In this case, the reverberation didn’t appear to continue. The landing was hard but solid and the props on the 350s kept spinning, biting and propelling. And then Capt. Gonzalez saw the U.S. Navy amphibious transport dock vessel USS Anchorage…

THE CONCEPT

Sharing a hull with the 32 Center Console, the 32 Walkaround platform combines fishing ability with family friendliness and weekending prowess for a couple. The builder wanted to strike a balance and make the boat versatile enough to accommodate active anglers and their family members who are definitely more into the recreational aspect of recreational boating. The cockpit is a prime example of the melding of fishing and recreation. Along the transom to starboard is a 31-gallon livewell, and beside it is a comfortable bench seat that folds up and secures out of the way to open up fishing real estate. Rod holders are built into the gunwale on both sides, and the hardtop can hold more, if an owner so chooses. But when it’s time to relax and maybe prepare the catch on the optional galley’s grill, an electronic SureShade awning extends from the hardtop to blanket the cockpit in shade. Under the cockpit sole — clad in optional SeaDek nonskid flooring the same sea foam green as the boat’s hull — are two 254-quart insulated fishboxes with a macerator, which are made possible because this is an outboard boat. A transom door to port provides access to the swim platform, where another boarding ladder resides. Perhaps the boat’s signature feature is to starboard. Called the Easy Open Sliding Gunnel Door, it’s composed of the aft four or five feet of the hullside and it slides rearward to create an opening for boarding or landing a really big fish. A fully retractable boarding ladder makes it a dive door too.

Fishing features are readily apparent on the 32 Walkaround, and some are not so apparent, such as under-deck cockpit fishboxes. When the angling action is complete — or maybe during, depending on one’s proclivities — the bow becomes a source of relaxation on twin sun lounges.

them with a bit of storage and cupholders, and their occupants sit behind an acrylic windshield; buyers can opt for a full acrylic enclosure. Our boat featured a single Garmin 7616 MFD, but a second is an option. A few DC switches are near the steering wheel — hydraulic steering is standard — and a few more are forward of the engine throttles and a Mercury joystick for outboards. Buyers who don’t want a joystick can opt for a bow thruster. Either option makes docking much easier. It was from here we conducted the sea trial, with four men aboard and about 60 percent fuel. With twin Mercury Verado 350 outboards growling at the back of the swim platform, the Belzona 32 Walkaround reached a top speed of 52 mph. While exhilarating, at that speed the twin Mercs are going to burn close to 70 gph. We found a much more reasonable speed on test day at 39 mph, at which point the props were spinning at 4750 rpm and the Verados were burning 40 gph — darn near 1 mpg at nearly

40 mph, for a range of about 220 miles. At about 4450 rpm, the Mercs were burning 26 gph at 34 mph. Gonzalez didn’t hesitate to pull hard turns at any speed, after of course warning everyone aboard, and the boat handled every turn without skidding or shuddering or sliding. Twenty-two degrees of deadrise help with its turning ability, as do chines and lifting strakes that run the length of the hull, giving it the grip to hold tight when physics says it should probably slip and slide a bit. The sportboat lean is fun, too, giving passengers a look at the water from above it at interesting angles. The boat handled the only “rough” water we could find on test day — ferry and Navy ship wakes — with aplomb, but Gonzalez and others said they have taken the 32WA out in 6-footers and not had any issues, even staying mostly dry thanks to the hard chine and a bit of flare at the bow. Such performance makes sense considering the hull was designed for the 32 Center Console,

in Florida, for anglers who like to go way offshore in all kinds of conditions.

BUYER’S CHOICE

A peek at the options list reveals why the Belzona folks like to say no two Belzona boats are exactly the same. The hull color and SeaDek flooring can be customized. In the cockpit, a jumpseat to port, starboard or both are options, as is an aft-facing folddown seat instead of the galley. Available fishing features include hardtop rod holders and outriggers, a tackle box and a portside livewell. Comfort touches range from a forward awning to cabin AC to a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer. As a harbor cruiser or an island hopper, the Belzona 32 Walkaround provides a versatile platform owners can outfit to their taste. And with a 295-mile range at 34 mph, the 32WA can take a couple around the San Juans or Gulf Islands for many days without worrying about fuel; that’s several fast trips to Catalina and back, too.

HORIZON YACHTS FD77 Dynamic space management and style highlight a yacht that takes comfort and all-around visibility seriously.

SPECS THE OLDIES SONG “I’M On The Outside Looking In” by Little Anthony & The Imperials laments a love lost and exhibits a desire to be back in. “An’ I wanna be, an I wanna be, an’ I wanna be back on the inside,” the singer croons. Those words come to mind as I stand in the salon of the Horizon Yachts FD77, hull #1. I am on the inside looking out, and what a view it is. Horizon appears to have calculated the correct equation for blending inside and outside together on its FD (Fast Displacement) models, and it shows on the FD77. Catching my attention first are the full-height frameless salon windows that reach 5 feet, 11 inches high in an

area that has 7 feet of headroom. Sidedeck access doors to the balconies and the triple-paned accordion aft deck doors are framed glass, too. Add in 23 feet of beam, and Horizon has solved the interior space conundrum. Open sidedeck railings come complete with dual safety lines, so passengers’ line of sight from any seat includes panoramic views of the coast or sea. With a cozy design that includes a low-profile yet comfortable portside L-shaped sofa, a diamondstitched ottoman, opposing dual chairs to starboard and a drop-down 55-inch Samsung LED TV concealed in the ceiling, the salon may become everyone’s favorite place to relax. But not so fast!

Horizon designed the FD77 to be an active yacht, for families and friends, in a casual but classy environment. Designers ditched a formal dining table with chairs for a more relaxed three-seat breakfast nook forward of the salon on the aft-end of the galley. It’s a great spot for morning coffee or to have the kids dine while the “oldies” go alfresco on the fully covered aft deck.

MAIN DECK FEATURES

Forward to port is the Horizon designed the FD77 to be an active U-shaped galley. The large yacht for families and friends. opening to the breakfast nook can be closed by a high-low privacy screen, and hidden glass pocket doors can enclose The spacious, open and well-lighted salon (above), including a forward breakfast nook (below), is sure to be a the galley for privacy. The appliance list is robust and favorite gathering spot. But the flybridge, which includes includes a full-height Sub-Zero refrigerator, four freezer the helm (bottom), will compete for passengers’ attention. drawers, an additional Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer drawer under the counter, a GE appliance suite — oven, cooktop, microwave oven, dishwasher — and a Blanco sink with a disposal. A full-height pantry, lockers and cabinets suffice for ample provisioning. Owners who like to get up for a midnight snack will appreciate the FD77. Horizon designed the master stateroom forward on the main deck, maximizing space utilization and privacy, as the additional staterooms are below. The main-deck master also affords the guest rooms more space. The master has a centerline king berth with draws and flanking nightstands. Hullside windows with opening ports allow ambient light and cool breezes to flood in and provide great views. An en suite head has a glass wall along the entryway that incorporates a Polyvision smart-glass installation. With a press of a button, the transparent glass delivers privacy-granting opaqueness, thanks to a smart film laminated between the glass panes. Additional head features include a tiered vanity with an oversized sink, storage space for towels just below and lower cabinetry. To port is the toilet room, through which is access to the shower stall. I thought the layout was awkward at first before realizing it’s pretty useful. When done showering,

Tester’s Opinion

It’s evident that Horizon Yachts has done its homework in not one but all aspects of the FD77 — from the seakeeping ability of the hull to the grand views from the salon’s oversized windows to the sleek design of the flybridge’s forward windows. The FD77 also offers dynamic space management and style. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2019  19

one can dry off in the toilet area without dripping on the marble floor at the vanity or in the carpeted master. A nice touch is the shower stall’s raised marble floor with a checkerboard design. Deep channels whisk away the water. Teak would be nice, but the marble is fashionable.

LUXURY ACCOMMODATIONS

Out of sight doesn’t mean out of mind, as Horizon carries the luxurious settings and fixtures to the lower staterooms. Here, owners can take advantage of several configurations to accommodate most any sleeping arrangement. Forward is the bow VIP, complete with a step-up centerline queen berth that includes underberth storage, hanging lockers, a 32-inch LED TV, and opening portholes. A private en suite head features a Tecma marine toilet, a sink/counter with storage below and a large shower stall. To port is another VIP stateroom with queen athwartship berth, a closet, a TV and an en suite head. The twin guest stateroom has twin beds that can slide together to make a double berth and an en suite head. Throughout the FD77, multitudes of woods and fabrics are used to add style while breaking up the monotony of single-source materials. American oak that is lightly glossed is bright and easily maintained. High-gloss walnut accents are used to trim walls, furniture and edges. Solid wood flooring in the salon, lower foyer, galley and other areas blends nicely. One item, the washer/dryer closet door, is composed of gloss multidirectional walnut panels, more like a piece of art that adds to the high-end feel.

OUTDOOR TIME

The view from the aft beach club is impressive. Not only does the 1,500-pound-capacity oversized hydraulic platform act as a shallow beach, swim-out stage or tender lift, but the lazarette is designed like a resort deck area, with a sofa lounge that converts to an oversized sunpad, chairs, a table and teak flooring. Included is a mini galley with a cooktop, a refrigerator/ freezer and a washer/dryer combo. Access to the beach is via a hydraulic full-width transom door, which also offers good shading for sunny days. A pantograph door is in the middle, for access when the big door is closed. Another great idea is the aft-deck dining table. With two sets of table leg sockets, the table can either be set close to the aft built-in transom seating or set forward with full chair seating all around it. This configuration allows for varied dining and seating options, from standup cocktail parties to seated dinners. Eight settings can easily be placed at this generously sized teak table. An aft-deck day head is convenient by location and reduces traffic into the salon. A refrigerator, ice-maker and dropdown TV

are nice touches. An oasis of relaxation awaits on the foredeck. A multiperson sunpad has an elevation sufficient to make it a great viewing platform and is ringed on three sides by a sturdy grabrail, and a well-padded bench spans the front of the flybridge just aft of the sunpad.

RUN FREE

Of note are the running attributes of the FD77. It’s a steady platform thanks to the ABT Zero Speed Stabilizers, and Horizon has redesigned a key component that not only reduces pitching but increases efficiency. A typical bulbous bow has a rounded front section that essentially pushes water away from the hull in an effort to reduce hull drag, among other things. Horizon redesigned its bow and now incorporates a high-performance “wave-piercing bow.” Watching this work while we are underway is an eye-opener. The more-pointed bulb parts the oncoming water at and just below the waterline. The water breaks against a much smaller part of the point, styled like an inverted hull, and slips down the bulb and away from the hull. I have been on several of the Horizon FD models and can attest to the premier ride and seakeeping ability of the hull design, even in 6-foot seas. Making all of this go are twin The view MAN V-8 1,200 hp diesel powerplants coupled to ZF gearboxes. from the aft Capable of 18 knots at wide open, the beach club is FD77 can journey safely between impressive. ports, even in less-than-desirable conditions. At 10 knots, its range measures about 1,650 nautical miles, based on a fuel capacity of 2,700 gallons, given approximately a 10 percent reserve.

TOP DECK FEATURES

A key feature of the open flybridge deck is the fixed front windshield. Integrated into the flybridge and hardtop, it offers commanding visibility and protection from the elements. Three large forward panes and wraparound side panes — one per side — allow the captain and guests to enjoy the open-air deck with less wind and noise. If desired, the glass side panes can be extended, or Bimini curtains can be added. The helm is full of electronics, including four 17-inch Garmin multifunction displays, Garmin rudder/speed, depth and autopilot displays, and Boning engine displays. Controls for the ABT Trac stabilizers and thrusters and the MAN throttle controls are close at hand. Twin Stidd helm seats are accompanied by port/starboard viewing benches for guests. A two-level bar with a refrigerator, ice-maker, sink, storage and three stools is to port. Across is a L-settee with glass cocktail table. Aft is a grill station with a high-low 24-inch propane barbecue. Interesting is the freestanding sunpad in the aft center of the deck. It’s a great sunning spot, but it also conceals the pre-wiring Horizon builds into the yacht in case a Jacuzzi is added post-delivery. It’s the forethought and planning for future enhancements that help Horizon be ahead of the curve.

END of the ROAD TIME IN FIJI AND AUSTRALIA CLOSE OUT A CROSS-PACIFIC ADVENTURE FOR A HAPPILY CRUISING DUET ABOARD A BOAT NAMED, YEP, DUET. BY RON A ND NA NCY GOLDBERG

{

Last year, in our April issue (“Ends of the Earth,” page 38), we presented a story by Ron and Nancy Goldberg aboard Duet. They had crossed the Pacific Ocean on their Nordhavn 50 and were cruising the Marquesas, the Society Islands and the Tuamotus in the South Pacific. Now, we pick up their adventure in Fiji. Definitely check out their blog, mvduet.com, for the full story of their adventures.

Savusavu Harbor

UPON ARRIVAL IN SAVUSAVU, our plans immediately underwent a change, because Ron got the local Savusavu flu bug. We’ve found that we are more susceptible to microbes in other countries, and our U.S. flu shot obviously didn’t work here. He got pretty sick, four to five days of running a temperature to 102 degrees and at least 10 days of coughing after that. Nancy, fortunately, only got the cough and Sean didn’t get anything, since he was still recovering from whatever he caught on the plane flight to Bora Bora. The check-in process in Fiji was rather drawn out, especially as we were out of the reach of our agent. She was able, however, to prevent a bit of a mess with Customs when we first arrived, thank goodness. Fijian Customs requires you to send your ninepage form at least several days in advance of your arrival. Nancy had sent ours to our agent at least a month in advance, and she had forwarded them to Savusavu. So far, so good. When we arrived, however, said form was nowhere to be found — or at least nowhere that our local Customs official was looking for it. Significant fines were mentioned, but we were able to get our agent on the phone and she got it straightened out. After that, it

was relatively smooth sailing. Soon after this, the weather moderated, Duet unwound herself from the commercial buoy, we recovered our dock lines from their role as dock tethers — a dock in the marina had broken loose and quick action by visitors and staff prevented damage to any boats — and set off for Port Denarau. The weather hadn’t moderated much, honestly. We saw winds in the mid-30s all way across the pass to the northern end of Vitu Levu, which is the main large island of Fiji. Duet chugged happily along, with conditions reminiscent of our 11-day trip from Bora Bora, but at least they only lasted about 10 hours this time. The following morning we set off

through the Makogai Channel toward Nagani Island. Just northeast of Nagani we crossed to the channel behind the reef that surrounds Viti Levu and began picking our way around to Port Denarau, which was about 85 miles away. The easiest way to reach Port Denarau from Savusavu is to continue up Broad Passage, through the Vatu-I-Ra Channel and along Bligh Water, but the Ra Channel acts as a serious wind funnel — winds were already in the high 20s early in the morning, which meant they could hit 40 knots in the Ra — so we gave it a pass and started along the rather opaque and poorly marked inside channel toward Nananu-I-Thake Island. We traveled slowly and carefully to the anchorage off Nananu-I-Thake the first day. It turned out to be a kitesurfer’s paradise, with at least a half dozen kites in the air as we came around the corner, with more poised to take off. Duet rumbled serenely through them, although one rider did manage to fall off right in front of us. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2019  27

(Clockwise from above) Radar is often unhelpful in Fiji because it can’t detect the barely submerged reefs. Ron helps pull a broken dock back into position. At least one butcher in Fiji has a sense of humor. Supplies aboard Duet are a mix of needs and wants.

‌

Our arrival in Port Denarau was relatively easy, as we arrived early in the day from a nearby anchorage. Our slip neighbor, who came later in the day, fell afoul of the brisk afternoon land breeze and had a rather eventful docking, getting a line tangled in his bow thruster and subsequently losing control of his bow, which then headed straight for Duet. No one was injured and Duet was not harmed, as the captain’s wife, at much risk to herself, fended off their bow pulpit as it slid down Duet’s port side.

Ron maneuvered carefully around him. We dropped the hook and spent a pleasant night in a beautiful anchorage we wish we could have spent more time in. “We wish we had more time was the story of our first month in Fiji, between the delays in Savusavu and the need to reach Port Denarau and get Duet settled before we flew home, we didn’t see much. What we saw though, made us want to see more when we returned in September.

Once all that excitement was over, we met with our agent, Jo, and set up various services, including having Duet washed and hiring a diver to change her zincs. Ron had injured his ear diving in Tahiti and so hadn’t changed them. It turned out that our diver had never changed a zinc before, but, as he said when he arrived, “No worries, I watched it on YouTube, so it’s all good. We generally found all our Fijian workers to be like that: willing, friendly and anxious to learn. Several came down to see Duet’s dive hookah in use, as they had not seen one before.

(Clockwise from right) Ron blazes a trail during a hike, and later he consults and trades with the locals. Savusavu Yacht Club is in an idyllic setting. Duet rests at the dock in Savusavu before the journey to Port Denarau.

We pick up the thread a few months later. The crew has been in the U.S. for a time and is now back in the South Pacific. SEVERAL DAYS LATER WE pulled off the dock. We planned to travel through the Mamanucas and the Yasawas, which are a contiguous island chain between Viti Levu and the outer reef. These islands are quite close to the marina, and are about 100 miles long from end to end. First we stopped at the famous Musket Cove Resort, where the annual Fiji Regatta is held. Like Papeete, Musket Cove is a gathering spot for boats from all over the world, so we saw a lot of different home-country flags. The regatta was held the week before we returned and Musket Cove was still pretty crowded, although the anchorage is quite large. We anchored Duet some way from the primary anchorage, in deep water, and offloaded the dinghy. Our first step was to join the Musket Cove Yacht Club for $10 Fijian ($5 U.S.), which gave us the run of the property. And a nice property it was, with

multiple restaurants, a pool with a great bar and miles of hiking trails on the island. A number of high-end houses are being built at Musket Cove, and it has the feel of a resort on its way up. We arranged to do some scuba diving with Subsurface Fiji. Our time in the South Pacific has rekindled our interest in diving, which we hadn’t really done since our time in the Caribbean some 20 years ago. We did a checkout dive at the Plantation Pinnacles, which was a fascinating rock formation in the middle of the sand. The Pinnacles were surrounded by colorful fish, and at the bottom, at a depth of about 80 feet, was a tunnel we all swam through several times. That was a first for us and we really enjoyed it. The highlight of this dive, however, was the schooling behavior of the local amber jacks, which love the divers’ bubbles. A hundred or more of them traveled in a tight clockwise funnel

just above our head while we lay on our back looking up. This experience of Fiji’s world-famous diving kept us at Musket Cove for several days, while we dove local sites such as the Supermarket, known for its sharks, and the Malolu Wall, which had some amazing fish. Soon enough, however, we felt we should move on and see something of the Yasawas, so we raised the anchor one morning and trundled north, bound for one of the many anchorages in the Yasawa chain.

When visiting one of the outlying islands, it is common to go ashore to the nearest village and perform sevusevu, a ceremony during which the village chief grants you permission to visit the island, fish the waters and anchor. Visitors, in return, gift the chief something, often kava root, a local delicacy that is made into a mildly intoxicating drink. We didn’t actually visit a village, as we didn’t anchor near any, but the villagers in Somosomo came out to us. We bought fruit SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2019  29

from them and Ron gave them some line and tubing to fix a spear. Everyone was quite happy with the exchange. Over the next couple of weeks we visited various places, including the Blue Lagoon that Brooke Shields made so famous years ago in the film of the same name. We didn’t do any more diving, but we did a lot of snorkeling and general hanging out on the hook. We even tried, twice, to find the sunken airplane snorkeling site that everyone talked about, but that was not to be. The path across the island from the Somosomo anchorage was so overgrown that we got lost every time we tried to get anywhere, but we did get some really good exercise bushwhacking our way in and out of the center of the island.

While we were cruising the Yasawas, a true miracle occurred: Nancy caught a fish.

While we were cruising the Yasawas, a true miracle occurred: Nancy caught a fish. Actually, she caught several, proving it wasn’t a fluke. For some reason, fishing on Duet has not been successful thus far, even though we hauled in many a mahi mahi aboard the previous Duet (a Nordhavn 46). Nancy, as usual, consulted the local fishermen before we departed for the Yasawas, and they told her, “Spanish mackerel are biting on the red/white Rapala lures.” So in went our red/white Rapala lure and, bingo, out came a Spanish mackerel. Ron was astounded, Nancy was vindicated and we had several great meals. Then, perchance, we happened to research the incidence of ciguatera — a type of nerve poisoning caused by eating certain reef fish — in Fiji. Turns out that larger Spanish mackerel have been implicated in cases of ciguatera in Fiji. Ron banned all Spanish mackerel aboard Duet immediately. But the jinx was broken and Nancy expects to catch many fish on this Duet in the future. In the meantime, she enjoyed running various lure combinations in search of a tuna, while returning all Spanish mackerel, unharmed, to the deep.

The marina (above) in Bundaberg, Australia, served as home to Duet for a time before the crew headed for Brisbane via Wide Bay Bar and the Great Sandy Strait, the path of which is shown to the right. Nancy absorbs some of the history of Brisbane during a walk along the city boardwalk.

We pick up the thread again a couple of months later, on the trip to Mooloolaba, Australia. The Duet crew waited for a weather window for more than a month at Port Denarau Marina in Fiji and has spent some time shallow-water cruising in Australia. TO CROSS WIDE BAY Bar, you make a hard starboard turn, between 6- to 8-foot seas breaking on the shoals to either side. It’s almost impossible to see the turn until you are right on top of it. We were doing just fine, although conditions were worsening as we got closer to the exit. The main engine temperature was steady at about eight degrees higher than normal and we were pretty comfortable. Nothing had come loose, and the boat was running quietly, except for the crashing as the bulbous bow hammered through the short seas. We hung on and trusted Duet to get us there. Ron made the turn perfectly and lined up between the shoals, where depths were about 11 feet, as expected. We could see the

calm water beyond the exit and the shoaling. At that point the main navigation computer crashed, so the screen in front of him went blank. We could see outside, but it is easy to get disoriented when making a turn like this, as the channel is not really visible in all the sloshing water from the shoaling all around the exit. There were no buoys on this bar, because the shoaling makes it impractical to use them. Ron was hand-steering Duet at this point. Normally we let the autopilot handle the boat, as it can steer much straighter than we can — it takes into account currents that push the boat off course — but this was a tight, rolly, confused exit and the autopilot doesn’t do so well with those, especially if the set course is very short, which this one was.

Wolfgang stopped by to say hello, so we dug out a decent bottle of wine and trotted over that evening to hear some incredible stories told by an incredible couple. Kanaloa looks showroom new, and Heidi and Wolfgang did their best to convince us to follow in their footsteps across the Indian Ocean. Not something we want to do, but it was fun to talk about. We spent about a week in Mooloolaba and enjoyed it very much. We found we like Australia and Australians a lot, and look forward to spending more time there, although we shall probably arrive by plane rather than aboard Duet next time. Nancy summed it up in an email to a friend: Just like Canada, but in a thong. She stole this headline from a timely New York Times opinion piece of the same name.

Duet hand-steers pretty well, once you get used to her, Relaxation time in Brisbane includes time at the city pool (top). Duet’s but it takes some long journey from Alaska to Brisbane, practice to keep including the Pacific crossing, is charted her going straight. on a small scale (above right). Fortunately the seas were ahead and on her beam, rather than behind her, as stern seas make her harder to control. Also, Ron has had a lot of practice guiding her in and out of tight entrances during the last two years, so he is pretty dialed in to how she will behave in a given situation. Ron kept steering the compass course he had before the computer crashed, while Nancy rebooted the balky system and confirmed he was doing OK by following our course on the laptop, which was to his right. It’s hard to steer straight while looking right, so he stuck with the compass, which was right in front of him, while Nancy watched our progress on the laptop. The main system came back up relatively quickly, Ron confirmed we were still going the right way and out we bashed, into calm waters off the Australian coast.

We had a quiet evening, ate at one of Mooloolaba’s many fine dining establishments and slept late the next morning. At that point we found out that not only is Panacea [a Nordhavn 50 owned by friends of the Goldbergs] based in Mooloolaba Marina, but so is the Nordhavn 46 Kanaloa, which is a bit of a legend in Nordhavn circles, because the boat and its owners, Heidi and Wolfgang, have circumnavigated the world three and half times and traveled more than 100,000 nautical miles.

Brisbane is a busy harbor, so we picked our way carefully past the loading docks, passing where the Yacht Express ship that would take Duet back to the U.S. would tie up, and trundled slowly upriver to our chosen marina. The competent team at Rivergate Marina got us settled in record time, in a nice berth that would be easy to get out of when the time came. They also gave us the goody bag to end all goody bags, likely because the manager is a bit of a Nordhavn fan. They even provided shuttle service to the nearby markets, where we stocked up with a few essentials. After several days aboard Duet at Rivergate, we moved to downtown Brisbane. The boat was ready to be loaded and we wanted to see a little of the area before we flew home, which was scheduled for about a week after the ship arrived, assuming it arrived generally when it was supposed to. Brisbane is a beautiful, livable, walkable city, with great dining. We stayed in a small apartment right in the center of town, with a kitchen and a washer/dryer, so Nancy chugged through endless loads of Duet laundry, rather than doing it on the boat. We ate out every night, walked all over town, took Uber rides to visit Duet and generally had a great time. Ron even managed to drive on the left-hand side of the road for several days, when we went to visit Mark and Carol on Panacea, and made a memorable trip to Australia Zoo, which was founded by Steve Irwin and is home to a number of saltwater crocodiles, which are Australia’s apex predator. We learned a lot about the crocs. We watched several shows, during which the zoo team explained why the crocs act as they do, and why it is so important to learn to live among them. The problems Australia has with the crocs are similar to issues we have with black bears in our hometown. In any interaction with people, the animal usually loses. Last, but definitely not least, we finally met face to face with Robbie and Jo, previous owners of Nordhavn 47 Southern Star. They bought Southern Star in New Zealand, cruised her to Thailand, shipped her to Turkey, cruised the Med, crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean and finally sold her in Florida. We’ve corresponded with them for years, so it was wonderful to finally meet them. Soon enough, the Yacht Express ship showed up and Duet headed home. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  AUGUST 2019  31

TO THE UNINITIATED, THE BOAT-BUYING PROCESS MAY SEEM OVERWHELMING, A PROCEDURE THAT’S PART TECHNICAL SKILL AND PART MYSTICISM.

First-time boat buyers and buying veterans might find it best to divide the sea trial into two parts: 1. Hard facts/procedures 2. More subtle aspects that often tell a bigger story Then plunge in.

Mired in somewhat archaic processes and a flood of paperwork, the boat-purchasing experience isn’t like buying a car or a house, although it has components of both. Only after an offer has been made and accepted on a boat can the process of evaluation begin in earnest. A variety of surveys are usually scheduled,

The tangible, quantifiable and objective parts of the sea trial usually receive all the focus, because they’re easy to list and check off. The more prepared you are with the details for the factual part of the process, the smoother the sea trial will be.

including an in-water survey, a haulout/bottom survey, an engine survey and a sea trial, which is the test drive. Unlike with a car purchase, prospective buyers don’t get to just hop on and take a pre-owned boat for a spin without making an offer. That’s to curtail folks from getting free boat rides if they’re just “kicking the tires.” To be clear, a sea trial is a test of a brokerage or pre-owned boat whereas a boat test is generally used to evaluate new vessels offered by a dealer that people can try without an official offer. “The sea trial is a test of the seaworthiness of a vessel,” said Tamara Krimstock of South Coast Yachts. “A sea trial is at least as important as the survey,” said Doug Wright, a San Diego-based marine surveyor.

Just the Facts, Ma’am

Plan the Day Most times, the various surveys and the sea trial occur on the same day. Perhaps the boat location requires the buyer to travel or the surveyor has a tight schedule, so bundling everything makes sense. Ask what players will be present for the trial, including the broker, surveyor, seller or the seller’s representative. Who will run the boat? The owner, his captain or a hired captain? Because the buyer pays for evaluation services such as the haulout, survey, engine oil analysis and so forth, it’s in your best interest to become the conductor of this symphony. The surveyor will want to inspect the equipment/engines cold at the dock, so the sea trial will have to occur after that but before the short haul at the boatyard, if possible, to save on that bill if something goes amiss on the test drive and you change your mind. Boatyards may haul the boat and leave it in the slings over the lunch hour or may only have time to do it in the morning before a sea trial can happen, so the schedule can go either way. Make Lists You have to do homework and come prepared with multiple lists (i.e., write down everything you want to test while you’re out). Of course that will include running engines at both cruising rpm and at wide-open throttle. Dick Simon of Dick Simon Yachts in Dana Point, Calif., said buyers shouldn’t

“If you want to see how to get the dinghy down off the flybridge, ask for it to be done,” said Leanne McNally of South Coast Yachts. “A faulty davit looks the same as a good one but will cost you upwards of $8,000 to replace later.”

expect to run the boat flat out for more than a minute or two. That’s long enough, he said, to see if the temperature increases, which could signal a potential problem. Blowing up an engine due to unnecessary stress — 20 minutes at WOT, maybe — will create a potentially expensive problem, but you should still ask to drive the boat and see how it handles in fast turns and in tight quarters. Other test items on the list may include running the generator, using the navigation and communications electronics including the VHF radio, engaging the autopilot, anchoring, playing with the digital switching system, deploying the stabilizer system (if there is one) and monitoring the batteries. “If you want to see how to get the dinghy down off the flybridge, ask for it to be done,” said Leanne McNally, also of South Coast Yachts. “A faulty davit looks the same as a good one but will cost you upwards of $8,000 to replace later.” Big Issue, Small Issue If the boat is a popular model of which a number were built, information about its performance and possible problems should be easy to find. Nothing should be a surprise during the ride. “The sea trial is a test to prove that the boat will do what the manufacturer originally stated it would do,” said Wright. “It’s to find out if the boat will perform up to the standard to which it was built.” If the boat is older or unique in some way, performance information may be more difficult to find. There may be an online history of issues that a model has experienced over the years, whether with performance or problems with engine mounts, fuel tank corrosion, steering irregularities and so on. Just like with a home inspection, a boat survey and sea trial will generate a list of items that may need to be addressed. You need not panic, though, as this is normal and doesn’t mean it’s a bad boat. Large issues should be addressed by the seller, and those include significant engine malfunction. Smaller issues will need to be taken on by you as the buyer. Understanding the

difference will make negotiations after the sea trial go more smoothly. Not a Pleasure Cruise “A sea trial isn’t the time to bring your whole family for a day on the water,” said Simon. “A boat under 30 feet will perform very differently with full fuel and water tanks and eight people aboard than at half tanks and three people.” A typical sea trial lasts 30 to 60 minutes. It may be longer if the vessel is large or has exceptionally complex systems. Build in extra time for getting through any no-wake zones. Decide whether it’s necessary to take the boat out on the open ocean to test upwind power and performance in a seaway. “If there’s no weather happening or you’re allowed to get up to speed in the bay, don’t waste everyone’s time going outside,” said McNally. Lean on Experts A surveyor should be present for the whole sea trial. Presumably, it’s someone you’ve interviewed prior to hiring her, as well as potentially one or two others, and you should ask questions about systems and the findings, but give her time to do the job without interruptions. While underway, the surveyor will be inspecting systems, taking measurements and photos, and recording notes. The time to dig into the findings will be later when they’re assembled into a report, which is usually within 24 hours. If the seller is present, this may be a time to learn about the boat’s idiosyncrasies, but some brokers don’t want the seller aboard during the sea trial. If a hired captain is running the boat, don’t be shy about taking the wheel and asking him what he thinks. Remember, however, that no matter what you ask of whomever, what you’ll get back is an opinion. “The boat tells the story. Not the broker, captain or seller,” said Wright. “A good broker will have done serious preparation, including having the bottom cleaned and the props serviced, so there’s no speed-robbing growth on the day of the trial,” said Simon. “Hard growth on a prop

can set up a vibration and can cause the boat to not reach its top-end rpm potential.” Consider Payment Details Come prepared to make payments for all services rendered on the day of the trial, including the surveyor and the short haul. Surveyors and some boatyards may require a check rather than a credit card. Most boats can be sea trialed and surveyed in one day, but for large vessels, it may become a multiday process and run into the thousands of dollars. Ask for Records Whether the owner is aboard for the sea trial or not, ask to have the vessel maintenance records available for inspection. That should be of interest to you as well as the surveyor and may explain things if the boat behaves a certain way during the sea trial. “Checking the thoroughness of the recordkeeping is a good way to learn the past owner’s priorities,” McNally said. “It lets you know who you’re buying from.”

Making multiple working parts come together isn’t easy, so leverage your broker to help.

Zen & Art of the Sea Trial

Now for the softer side of the process, which is where communications, expectations and emotions meet. Before you roll your eyes and turn the page, remember that more deals get hung up due to a lack of preparation and soft skills than due to bad oil samples. Divide these touchy-feely items into groups. “A sea trial is like a dance,” Simon said. “Things can be finessed right down to the weight balance on a smaller boat, so be aware of what’s real.” Marine surveyor Brad Destache pointed out that the process of arriving at a fair value for a boat can be contentious. “The art is the different people and how you deal with them.” Destache likes to get a feel for the whole group: buyer, seller, broker. “You’ll see right away who’s laidback and who’s the natural alarmist. I adjust my bedside manner accordingly. In the end, everything is repairable and negotiable.” Communications & Time Management Making multiple working parts come together isn’t easy, so leverage your broker to help. Either you or your broker should make contact with all parties and create an itinerary for the day. When everyone works well together, the sea trial is more productive and goes more smoothly, and any negotiations that happen afterward are more amiable. As the buyer, don’t show up late, even if you’re flying in. Making other people wait means you’re not honoring their time and their role. Don’t lollygag through the sea trial. Get out, get things done and get back. If the boat doesn’t meet your expectations, say so and either move on or make a list of contingencies and repairs. Most importantly, treat the sea trial as a lesson. “If this boat ends up being yours, you’ll never have more people with more knowledge assembled at one time to help you learn the vessel,” Destache said. Expectation & Emotion Management No used boat is perfect. For that matter, no new boat is perfect, so expect that the sea trial will uncover something. Address everything that comes up

with as much reason and as little emotion as possible. Get an estimate of what a repair or a replacement will cost. Understand that if the offer comes in low, the seller won’t be motivated to make many changes. “An offer may have to be full price to get a seller to make significant repairs,” McNally said. Understand All Parties’ Motivations The art of making a good deal is to understand everyone’s motivations. The surveyor works for the buyer and will find issues to show the boss. Sift through what’s important and don’t worry about the rest. The seller wants to offload the boat but will expect a fair value, unless desperation is a factor. The broker wants the deal to come together; she has a commission on the line and wants happy customers who will buy or sell another boat in the future. And therein lies the crux: a good deal is where the expectations of all parties are understood and somewhat met. “The key,” Destache said, “is to not get involved emotionally, but that’s hard for folks to do.”

Keep it Safe Check to make sure there are basic safety items aboard before you get on someone else’s boat, even if the sea trial is just in the harbor. Have PFDs for everyone, find the location of a couple of fire extinguishers and do a radio check before you depart the dock. Focus on the Details A finely tuned attention to detail will serve you well on the sea trail. Engage your senses. Watch for things you do and do not want to see. Smell the engine room, lay eyes on the seacocks, and feel the wheel and how the boat responds. “You don’t have to be emotional to be engaged and aware,” Destache said. “If there’s a vibration, a hum, a ping or a broken switch, note it, learn about it and decide if it’s something small or significant.” Respect the Boat & the People This one should be a given. You need to respect all parties involved as well as the vessel itself on the sea trial and during the whole purchase process. Especially if the sellers are present, remember that until your check clears, this is their boat and should be treated with courtesy. You don’t need to heed the advice of the broker or listen to the owner’s sea stories, but you can excuse yourself politely while you test drive or just smile and nod. It doesn’t hurt — much.

BananaBelt Boats & Yachts BananaBelt Boats & Yachts 2919 V Avenue Anacortes, WA 98221 (877) 588-9208 www.bananabeltboats.com Buy or Sell with BananaBelt Boats & Yachts in Anacortes– Where It’s A Boat Show Every Day! Since 2000, The Pacific Northwest’s #1 Choice to Buy or Sell a Pre-Owned Motor Yacht - 28’ to 70’ - is BananaBelt Boats & Yachts in Anacortes, WA. Family owned and operated they have a unique and easy way to see more than 60 boats all in one place - all located at their On Land Marina where all the motor yachts are connected by stairs and walkways making it easy to see so many different kinds of boats all in one day. No more running dock to dock and marina to marina with a broker, you can see almost every style and kind of motor yacht and boat, top to bottom, at your own pace! And when it comes to representing and selling yachts, according to soldboats.com, in the past 12 years they’ve sold more 28’ to 70’ motor yachts than any other broker in the Pacific Northwest! They sell more because of their top selection, the unique buying experience in the On Land Marina and because of their team of marine professionals led by Amy Thornton and her husband Matthew, both Certified Professional Yacht Broker and Owners since April 2019. BananaBelt Boats & Yachts didn’t just hang up a shingle outside some marina office and call themselves “brokers” like the other guys, they are boaters who OWN the marina and the entire infrastructure you’d expect including a KMI Sea Lift to make haul and launches for demos easy, fast and inexpensive! Plus, their full time staff of marine technicians makes sure all boats going to Survey and Demonstration are ready to show and go - ask other pre-owned yacht brokerages if they have the support staff to do that - and they do it at no additional charge to sellers and buyers! On Land Moorage is Now Available and if you list your boat or buy a boat with BananaBelt Boats & Yachts before October 31st, 2019 you’ll get 2 months of Moorage Free! BROKERAGE YACHT MARKETING When it comes to marketing their clients’ boats, Crow’s Nest Yachts is second to none. Considering selling your boat? Ask about their extensive marketing programs, which utilize all the right online and traditional tools. On the traditional marketing side, Crow’s Nest’s footprint is the largest on the West Coast. In addition to their presence at multiple yearly boat shows, they run a combined 12+ full pages of brokerage boats in 5+ boating magazines every month. Online, each Crow’s Nest listing has its own page on their website CrowsNestYachts.com, YachtWorld.com, and Yatco.com. Performance of this considerable online presence is enhanced using effective email marketing and social media programs. The company’s tradition of world-class experience and service since 1974 continues with some strategic changes that are working in their customers’ favor… SEATTLE In October 2010, the Seattle office was purchased by three senior members of their sales staff—Vic Parcells, Dale Partna, and Dan Wood. With over 80 combined years of experience and an acute knowledge of local boating in the Northwest, the new owners were then poised with all the tools needed to tailor the business to the genuine needs of their customers. Mike Manning and Keith Walsh round out the Seattle team. NEWPORT BEACH In similar fashion, three senior members of the Newport Beach office— Dennis Riehl, Todd Sherman, and Jerry Stone—took the reins from the prior owner in January 2012. Since then, all Crow’s Nest offices have operated independently, yet remain “connected at the hip”. The Newport Beach office offers a tremendous team of experience and expertise.

SAN DIEGO Long-time yacht brokers Eric Pearson and Michael Selter purchased the San Diego office in October 2017 and have transformed CNY into Shelter Island’s premier boutique yacht brokerage with an emphasis on upgraded, personalized service. Michael Gardella, a San Diego native who helped launch the original Crow’s Nest in 1974 as one of its first brokers, has returned to work alongside Eric, Michael and the rest of the team— Jacques Bor, Phil Kinnison, Alan Faiers, and recent recruit Mark Whelan. ANACORTES Crow’s Nest Yachts is currently celebrating the one-year anniversary of its newest office in Anacortes, WA. Nestled right next to Cap Sante Marina (the hot spot of Anacortes), Crow’s Nest is ready to serve more of the Puget Sound “from the Gateway to the San Juans”.

PIERRE’S ECHO BAY LODGE & MARINA

Visitors will enjoy fun, history, relaxation and plenty of food. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP

I SWITCHED THE CHANNEL ON the VHF radio to 66A and hailed “Pierre’s Echo Bay, Pierre’s Echo Bay, motor vessel Easy Goin’, over.” The friendly and welcoming voice of the wharfinger responded “Easy Goin’, Pierre’s, over.” “Pierre’s, Easy Goin’. We are 40 feet LOA, have reservations for the next two nights and looking for a slip assignment.” As we arrived at our assigned slip the wharfinger was waiting to assist with our lines. During the past few years, Arlene and I have made a number of trips to British Columbia’s Broughton Island area. The Broughtons, as it’s

known in the cruising community, offers plenty for boaters with its scenery, wildlife, marine life, secluded anchorages and small wilderness marinas. One of the rustic facilities that we visit every time we are in the area is Pierre’s Echo Bay Lodge & Marina on Gilford Island. Each of the handful of marinas in the area has something unique to offer visitors, and Pierre’s is no different.

The cliff behind Pierre’s Echo Bay, which bounces sound back, is what gives the bay and lodge its name.

HOLIDAY CELEBRATION Our visit last summer fell on Canada Day, July 1, so we celebrated the national holiday with 75 of our closest Canadian and American friends. We had enjoyed the festivities so much a few years previous that we had to return. The celebration began the day before as boats of all shapes and sizes arrived for the holiday. We soon got to know a few of the other guests during an impromptu happy hour on the dock that had boaters bringing appetizers to share, enjoying their favorite beverage and swapping their best boating stories. Boats were decorated with colorful pennants and Canadian flags. Canadians and Americans alike wore their red and white. Early in the morning Pierre Landry fired up a huge barbecue and loaded the rotisserie rack with enough prime rib to feed everyone. At 5 p.m. everyone gathered at the pavilion, sang “Oh Canada” and rounds of “Brother John” (Frere Jacques) in both English and French, and enjoyed a family-style dinner. After dessert the entertainment for the balance of the evening was the delightful music of the Davis family, from Abbotsford.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER Canada Day is not the only day long-bearded Pierre and his wife Tove (pronounced “Tova”) offer dinner to their guests. Each year they establish an event calendar, PNW-2

Bay This year’s dinners included barbecued Hanson Harbledown Island Island prime rib (Monday and Thursday), fish and Vancouver Island chips (Wednesday) and roasted whole pig (Saturday). The latter is what Pierre is best known for in the cruising community. Kids 12 and under eat for free and they get a kick out of the Landrys’ hospitality; adults are encouraged to become kids again. The Landrys provide the pig and do the barbecuing — on a unit that was built and donated by the Des Moines Yacht Club of Washington — and cruisers are asked to bring cutlery and a plate, a beverage, a hearty dish to share and a big appetite. Then everyone eats together like one big family in the dining hall. Due to the pig roast’s popularity, moorage fills quickly, and guests are requested to make reservations for arrival on Friday. The hosts don’t take reservations for Saturday, so they can devote the entire day to the pig.

TARGA 27.2 — IS A WINNER!

We are very proud of this prestigious recognition.

Targa's Botnia range is one that defines a genre. If you’re after a wheelhouse cruiser that will take you anywhere all year round then a Targa is the obvious choice.…The 27.2 is a sweetspot in the sweetest of ranges. It’s compact enough to be manageable single-handed and not too expensive to berth but big enough to tackle conditions that would send far larger craft back down their own wake trail, tails

between legs. It is as tough as old boots yet it has the agility and performance of Nike running spikes. In the Blackline trim it even looks more modern, while still retaining the timeless Targa appeal. This is a boat that has to be driven to be believed, preferably in a gale with sheets of water slapping off the impenetrable hull. Even by Botnia’s own lofty standards, the 27.2 is exceptional.”

owners. Two self-contained suites in the hand-built cedar lodge have balconies that overlook the marina and the mountains to the north. The suites tend to rent out often, so it’s recommended to make reservations.

LIVING LEGEND

As popular as the roasted whole pig is with boaters, our favorite is the prime rib. Pierre cuts and serves healthy portions, and it’s delicious. Pierre’s is more than dinner. The family owned and -operated marina is open year-round and located in well-protected deep-water Echo Bay, which has a spectac ular sheer rock cliff on one side. Echo Bay got its name from how sound bounced back from the large cliff on the east side of the bay.

MARINA AMENITIES Personality emanates from the buildings and floats tied up to this floating commu nity. The facilities include well-maintained

extra-wide docks; a fuel float that offers diesel, gasoline and propane; 15-, 30- and 50-amp power; a well-stocked wilderness store; water, washrooms, showers, laundry and limited Wi-Fi; a post office, a gift shop and a book exchange; a community fire pit and a wood-burning saltwater hot tub. The store carries a good selection of items, including meats, dairy products and fresh produce (July and August only) canned goods, condiments and other grocery prod ucts. The marina is also dog friendly. Several seaplane operations call on the marina, which makes it convenient for crewmembers to join or leave a cruise. Pierre’s isn’t solely the domain of boat

The next morning, after coffee and breakfast, we took a short walk. A visit to Pierre’s isn’t complete without following the trail that leads to Billy Proctor’s Museum, open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and full of relics and artifacts that he has found throughout the years. Proctor has spent his life logging, trapping and fishing in northern British Columbia, and he began collecting his impressive collection of memorabilia when he was five years old. On display are arrowheads, tools, old bottles, fishing gear, old pictures, a logging and trapping cabin, and a blacksmith shop. All donations to the museum go to salmon enhancement. It’s always a pleasure talking to Proctor, who is quite a character. Now in his 80s, the local pioneer, area legend and writer has co-written two books about his life in the Broughtons. The first, written with Alexandra Morton, “Heart of the Raincoast,” tells stories about the region. The second, “Full Moon, Flood Tide,” also written with Morton, documents the history of the archipelago from the writer’s viewpoint. Both are well worth reading and are available for sale in his small gift shop along with other interesting gifts.

GET OUT AND EXPLORE At the end of the bay is a provincial park that is popular with kayakers, and a trail from Pierre’s makes the trip there a short afternoon hike. Up until 2008 when it was closed, the park area was the site of the Echo Bay School. The building was torn down in 2014. If foraging for a meal is your thing, try fishing in the area. Salmon, halibut, rock cod, prawns and crabs are there to be caught.

Fisherman’s Resort and John Henry’s Marina combine to become John Henry’s Resort & Marina. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP

AT THE 2018 VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL Boat Show, I met Allyson Nelson, the owner of John Henry’s Marina and neighboring Fisherman’s Resort. She had purchased the two parcels a couple of years earlier, combined the marinas and renamed the facilities John Henry’s Resort & Marina. The accommodations are in Pender Harbour on British Columbia’s sunshine coast. After talking to her, Arlene and I committed to visit on our summer cruise north. Situated halfway between Vancouver, B.C., and Desolation Sound, Pender Harbour has long been a popular stop for boaters heading up and down Malaspina Strait. It’s a complex maze of islands, bays and reefs penetrating more than three miles inland. The harbor is home to a

PNW-6

handful of seaside communities and most commuting among them is done by boat rather than the twisting roads, giving the area its well-earned nickname: The Venice of the North. In June, we guided Easy Goin’ between Williams Island and Henry Point at the

mouth of Pender Harbor and continued to Hospital Bay. We could see the resort’s freshly painted buildings in their bright colors from the harbor. The colorful buildings, picnic tables, and lawn chairs create a special charm, and the grounds are nicely manicured. G E T T O K N OW T H E OW N E R The good news is that Nelson and her husband, Richard Gaudreau, have no plans to make any major changes. Owners of a Jeanneau 53 sailboat, they’re familiar with what Northwest boaters desire in a marina. Nelson also owns Mad About Food Inc., which produces a variety of food products under three brand names: Jules and Kent, Kitchen, and Caveman BBQ. The couple saw a “for sale” ad for John Henry’s in a boating magazine and followed up with a call to Fisherman’s to ask if it might be for sale. Fisherman’s had the advantage of being a large marina with several cottages, while John Henry’s was smaller and included a general store, a liquor outlet and a fuel dock. Combined,

Hoffman joined United Yacht Sales, which has a global network of more than 150 professional yacht brokers, as an independent yacht broker in 2011 when the brokerage originally expanded to the Northwest. He brings a lifetime of boat knowledge and experience to the office, as well as a passion for boating Northwest waters. The office is located in the Bainbridge Island Waterfront building at Eagle Harbor Marina. For more information, call (206) 395-4419. “We believe our new office will fill an important void for both boat buyers and sellers of not only Bainbridge Island, but the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas as well,” Hoffman said. “Our goal is to provide world-class service, premium inventory and state-of-the-art tools to a region that has been largely underserved until now.”

The guide, funded by the California Division of Boating and Waterways, includes harbors from Santa Barbara through San Diego counties, with updated details on each harbor’s unique features, such as emergency contact numbers, entrance obstacles, guest slips and pricing, waste disposal and fueling facilities, recreation and tourism opportunities, and pollution prevention resources. The latest version, available in print and digital format, also includes information on the Pumpout Nav app and the new California Boater Card. Visit SantaMonicaBay.org to download or order a copy.

WEST MARINE HIRES CMO

Watsonville, Calif.-based West Marine hired Aaron Carpenter as chief marketing officer. The boating supply retailer announced the hiring of the 20-year retail-industry vet in May. Carpenter’s previous stint was as vice president of global marketing for The North Face. “We are excited to welcome Aaron to the West Marine team,” said Ken Seipel, CEO of West Marine. “Aaron understands the boating enthusiast lifestyle and will help us develop and execute marketing strategies to ensure the West Marine brand is strong.” In addition, the retailer hired Ron Baime as chief merchandise officer. With more than 20 years of retail experience, including 12 years with Dick’s Sporting Goods and stints with Kohl’s, Best Buy and others, Baime brings knowledge of digital strategy, category launches, customer experience and more to West Marine.

ASK A BROKER

BROKERAGE ADVICE

THE SCOOP

Our August issue typically includes a feature story about brokers or that uses brokers as sources. This year’s issue has the latter. Starting on page 32 is a feature story about sea trials on brokerage boats. How can potential buyers make the most of them? How can brokers help? Why should participants consider sea trials part art and part science? Several brokers gave their thoughts on the topic. Check it out.

Weekend Fixes That Pay > Engine room and bilges. Remove any built-up oil, grease or grime. > Abovedecks. Detail and wax. > Stowage lockers. Clean. > Lockers and the head compartment. Remove musty odors. > Holding tanks. Flush.

Haulout-Worthy Fixes When the boat is out of the water, brokers say owners should fix any blistering and do bottom paint if it has been more than 18 months since the last treatment. The boatyard should examine the underwater running gear and treat any corrosion.

Last year’s story was called “8 Qualities of a Yacht Sales Professional,” and at its most basic it distills down to this list:

In 2017, we asked brokers for their thoughts on what matters most for folks looking to sell a boat. Here’s a summation.

1. Certification & Education 2. Probes for True Needs 3. Manages Expectations 4. Understands The Bigger Picture 5. Understands & Possesses Specialized Contracts 6. Has Networking Reach & Technical Savvy 7. Owns Long-Game Mindset 8. Possesses Passion Read the entire story at seamagazine. com/8-qualities-yacht-sales-professional/.

Vanity Matters

Leave it to the Next Guy

When it comes to getting the boat ready to sell, the reality TV marketing playbook is a good model: be visible. Carefully staged photos and drone videos help a boat stand out from the crowd.

Brokers generally agree that a major renovation of the cabin or cockpit should be left up to the buyer (perhaps giving the buyer some money back on the closing costs instead of renovating the interior oneself is the better path). The same goes for sun-faded or torn canvas covers. Sellers should, however, fix any delamination to the deck.

Smart Improvements

Go with the Flow

Not all improvements are created equally when it comes to a return on investment. Knowing the boat’s market segment and working with a trusted broker, a seller can determine if any improvements are needed to attract buyers.

Selling a used boat can be stressful, but doing one’s homework will help navigate the process. Patience goes a long way during a boat sale that can take up to a year (or longer). Get the full scoop here: seamagazine.com/ sweat-the-details/.
