ADVERTISING SALES HI EVERYONE, THERE IS a new editor onboard for Sea. My name is Jordan Darling and I will be

taking the helm as the editor for Sea magazine. Until recently I was the staff editor for the Log newspaper where I was hired in January 2021 and now I am the editor for Sea as well as the Log. I have a bachelor’s in journalism from California State University, Dominguez Hills where I graduated in May 2020 with latin honors and honors in the major. Go Toros! I was the editor-in-chief for the student run newspaper the Bulletin my senior year and I brought in five awards for the paper from the California College Media Association and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. My awards were for pieces I wrote about antisemitism on campus, the Israeli/Palenstinian conflict, military tradition, and the COVID-19 pandemic. During my time at Dominguez I also worked on the Alumni magazine Compendium and was part of the team that started the student digital magazine Medium. I wrote several feature pieces that ranged from the psychology of online dating to feature profiles on CSUDH alumni and professors. As a writer I love to find stories that can bring something to my audience whether it is educational or just the joy of reading about a good adventure. For this issue I wrote a piece about a man who sailed from Buenos Aires to Deception Island in Antarctica with zero-carbon emissions, a piece of news that came across my desk because the company he bought his engine from sent me a press release. Writing this piece reminded me how many unexpected twists and turns journalism can take from stumbled on stories to unexpected promotions. It also reminded me what I love about this profession, the twists, the turns, and sharing stories with others. Thank you for reading Sea and I look forward to bring you the magazine and hearing back from you. You can reach out to seaeditor@goboating.com.

ASK THE EXPERTS THE EXPERTS By GRID MICHAL GRINDING GRID’S GEARS

SMALL VICTORIES SOME DAYS YOU HAVE to make your own fun by deviating from

work. The last few months have been some of those days. This fun is about oatmeal. To begin with, I might eat one or two bowls of oatmeal a year. Mostly, I have raisin bran bought in hundred pound bags at Costco. At least they feel like a hundred pounds. But this is about oatmeal, not Costco. Right up until Thanksgiving I was functioning like any robust 75-year-old, even the day after when Hank and I were installing a lower unit in a big Honda. We finished and decided to stop at my house for a sandwich. While he made sandwiches I sought a seat in the living room, missing the seat by just enough to look dumb, and depositing myself on the carpet. Fortunately our small town has a volunteer rescue squad that likes to drive fast, within the legal limit, so it wasn’t long before we were scooting down Route 17 towards the small hospital where I came bustin’ through the emergency doors with a 105-degree temperature a pulse of 107,

and blood pressure 200/165. I was pumped full of steroids, which made matters worse for my old tummy. So for the next four weeks I existed on ice chips. Finally it was agreed—after shoving my entire body through a bunch of big round things, and examining beaucoup x-rays, that it might be a small bowel obstruction, that could be accessed with minimal invasion. One thing I know about the word invasive is it is negative, minimally or not, especially if I’m involved. So my daughter, the Richmond Registered Nurse, got me into a big hospital that certainly could get her dad well. Four days later after hours of interrogation and more blood removal, I was put on a liquid diet of jello…and ice chips. Two days later the oatmeal saga began. My lines are in regular type. Hapless hospital employees’ lines are italicized. Day one: soft diet, breakfast of scrambled eggs, and jello brought at 8:30 a.m. Hi! Thanks, but where’s my oatmeal? Did you order oatmeal? Mais oui, monsieur. Let me go ask the kitchen. He disappeared. The next day, here comes breakfast, no oatmeal. Hi! Did you bring my oatmeal? Didn’t they bring it? Nope, you said you’d get it. Lemme go ask what they did. He disappeared. The next day he’s a no-show. A doctor enters. How are you doing? I would be great if I had some oatmeal. All I get is eggs. The doc disappeared, returned in 5 minutes with a big bowl of oatmeal. He pulled the lid off the plate. One sausage. I ate the oatmeal and the sausage. The next day the tray comes with a bowl of oatmeal. Almost a yay except there’s no plate. War is declared. I order everything I can think of that’s soft, including prime rib. I learn if they don’t have it, they zero the whole menu, just for you. A pyrrhic victory at the least. Eventually, I leave the hospital and go to an intensive physical therapy/occupational therapy unit. That unit is run by the hospital and my reputation precedes me. A nice lady stops by to say hi. She’s the CEO. She asks is everything okay. Would be if I could have my oatmeal. As nice as this place is, I had to have my daughter get some oatmeal. My spouse brought brown sugar. I’ll get by, I think. Next day, and until I left that facility, every morning I had a

8  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2021

huge bowl of oatmeal. But the thrill of the chase was gone. I couldn’t quit! The next morning, “I got you a double oatmeal!’’ Great! Salt for my eggs, too? “What eggs?” I’m full of oatmeal. I enjoy eggs, sausage, and bacon. And salt. You don’t have eggs. Eat your oatmeal, now. I’ll decide if you get breakfast tomorrow! Yes, ma’am. When the first rehab decided they’d been patient enough, I was transferred to a smaller facility near the first hospital where if you decide to be lazy they hang you in a sling and watch your feet swing inches off the floor. On my first day, I was introduced to the menu, which covered things that contributed to a meal, like a chicken, and those that were permanently involved, like a pig. This menu was immense! Hold on, did I just see oatmeal? I circled it. The next morning I got Cheerios. Cheerios are supposed to make one smile, not scowl. I’d circled oatmeal for the whole week, and but for one day got Cheerios. That one day I got a fruit bowl. My morning now starts with vigorous exercise followed by noting emergency exits that are unattended. At lunch, I noted on the dietary instructions “cut meat.” That seems to have included everything, including sweet potato, peas, and breaking a half-slice of toast into communion-sized pieces. There was the obligatory tiny cup of butter and no knife. I got my yellow pad out and wrote a letter to dietary asking if I could please have a knife. At dinner, they gave me a plastic knife, no fork. But they included syrup, which in volume will hold peas on a knife. I’ve gone through every column I’ve written for Sea and Boating World for the past 31 years and can’t find a reference to any situation in which I might have reduced a customer to a babbling idiot. If I did, please accept my apologies. I received my just due. Fortunately, the same reputation that preceded me with the oatmeal carried with it the caveat that I was full of fun, and old fogeys belonged somewhere else. When I get home, I may go on an oatmeal diet, but I know better than to try it that way! The meals at the second place were good, but you had no idea what you’d get. Just that what you circled for the week’s meals would probably not be on your tray, unless it was coffee. The last two breakfast meals were a victory for me: on the left side of my tray there was a knife and a fork, but no spoon. I had a waffle, no butter, no syrup. I had Cheerios, milk, and sugar. I need to tell you how the meals went so you’ll understand the final lunch. I got out of there on a Thursday, so this is how it went. I can’t imagine that food was re-used, but here it is: Monday: rock-hard pork chop. But couldn’t eat it because NO KNIFE. Veggies: squash, okra, cucumber slices. I hate those veggies, especially when there’s only one tiny tub of butter. Except for the fruit cup, lunch went uneaten. Tuesday: rock-hard pork chop cut into pieces. Squash, etc, in butter-water. I got one piece of chop down. Wednesday: chop residue in smaller pieces with gravy. Veggies are looked aged, but I had two butter containers. The only utensil is a fork. Thursday: pork chop has been in a blender with the veggies. ML and I stopped at Chick-fil-A for lunch on the way home. A small victory.

MEXICO REPORT

By CAPT. PAT RAINS

5 TIPS FOR SOUTHBOUND SUCCESS THIS FALL’S ANNUAL MIGRATION of

recreational boats into Mexican waters is expected to be quite a bit larger than it was back in pre-pandemic 2019. This is mostly due to a pent-up demand from 2020’s withered cruising season, and the statistics are already showing a healthy increase. For example, as of Aug. 1, 2021, the venerable Baja Ha Ha southbound group already had 160 sailboats entered for their Nov. 1 pilgrimage into Mexico. The relatively new Panama Posse (Mexico to Panama) already had 214 early entrant boats, and more than a quarter of those were long-range trawler cruisers. This cruising season some Panama Posse participants are expanding their cruising plans beyond Panama and well into the Caribbean and South Pacific. Obviously, this year’s southbound migration will not be a one-size-fits-all activity. The only common factor is that all of us West Coast boaters will start our southbound adventure by voyaging down the 800-n.m. Pacific side of the Baja California Peninsula. The outside of Baja is ruggedly beautiful, but it is also infamous for its lack of marinas, fuel docks, yacht services, and reliable overnight anchorages.

5 Tips for Successful South-Bounding Here are five little tips for successful south-bounding. These were learned in the proverbial school of hard knocks and trial and error, discovered

12  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2021

Photo 1

Photo 2

by myself and by dozens more experienced Mexico cruisers. May they enrich your planning and especially your actual doing. 1. Don’t think your boat must cross the border on November 1 just because that’s the first date your marine insurance allows it, or just because the Baja Ha Ha departs en masse from San Diego on that day.

(PHOTO 1: Calendar Nov 1.) Why? Because hurricane season ignores calendar dates. Also, the onslaught of newly arriving U.S. boaters in Baja tends to book up all the marina slips, suck up all the boat fuel, and fill up the best anchoring spots. So you might wisely choose to wait seven to 10 days, or until all the Ha Ha folks have

sailed south of Turtle Bay’s anchorage and fuel pier. Or wait and spend the year-end holidays at home with friends and family, then set out after New Year’s Day – as many independent boaters do. 2. Do plan to officially clear into Mexico at Ensenada. Why? Because the CIS office makes it easy and safe, and because it’s actually the law. The CIS (Centro Integral de Servicios) building is across the street from the NE corner of Ensenada harbor. (PHOTO 2: Ensenada CIS building.) If you don’t clear in at Ensenada, the next Port Captain’s office is at Cabo San Lucas; until you clear in there, you’ll officially be illegal immigrants. 3. Before departure, do a sea trial of your (a.) boat and (b.) crew by running non-stop for 36 hours, even if it’s just over the horizon and you’re running in circles. (a.) Monitor your fuel consumption at your boat’s optimum slow-cruise speed, because south of Ensenada’s marinas and fuel docks, it’s 315 n.m. to the first rickety and expensive fuel pier at Turtle Bay. Beyond there, emergency fuel is difficult and not always available inside Magdalena Bay, which lies 300 n.m. south of Turtle Bay. Otherwise, you’ll need to run 420 n.m. from Turtle Bay to get fuel at Cabo San Lucas. (b.) Sea trial your crew by assigning them to stand helm watches 24 hours around the clock, including one or two overnights. Plan to NOT stop the boat to sleep every night. Why? Because even in fair weather the geography of the Pacific side of Baja provides only a few relatively safe overnight anchorages: San Quintin, Cedros Island, Turtle Bay, Santa Maria Bay and nearby Magdalena Bay. Many boats need to make three or four overnight runs to get down Baja. (MAP: Baja South-bounding) I normally schedule a crew of three experienced watch standers to operate the moving boat “four hours on, eight hours off.” Off-watch crew needs to sleep during the day, so each person will be alert for their night watch. This sea trial also reveals folks with undiagnosed Thalassophobia, a terror that strikes only when they sail beyond the sight of land. Even veteran coastal cruisers can be surprised by this issue, and you’ll need to SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2021  13

MEXICO REPORT make three offshore passages while migrating down Baja. 4. Nobody expects you to be fluent in Spanish, but a huge help is “Spanish for Cruisers” By: Kathy Parsons, used as a textbook by La Paz cruisers. Learn words for things on your boat, for weather and sea conditions you’ll experience on Baja. Practice speaking Spanish on the VHF, using “cambio” for “over.” I was northbound from Turtle Bay going slow in dense fog, totally dependent on radar. As I approached the south side of the Punta Eugenia headland, I dutifully got on VHF 16 to notify all vessels of my location, course and speed. Then using my pocket dictionary I somewhat timidly repeated it all in Spanish, using “cambio” for “over.” Immediately, the Cedros Island port captain blasted out some kind of warning. Was he talking to me? Flipping through my dictionary, I found his strange word: Remolcador? Does that mean tug boat? No, I’m not a tug boat. Just to be safe, I pulled back to slow bell as my radar peeked past the point of land. Ah ha! I picked up a tiny blip only 1500 feet ahead of me. It was barely moving, definitely westward, and had already crossed my northbound course line. So I might very easily have aimed for a point east of his stern and proceeded north. But, whoa! Trailing a full mile behind that tiny blip of a tug boat came a great big blipping barge! Turning hard to port, I made a couple donuts in the foggy Eugenia Channel. Not until after that tug, its mile-long tow cable and big

barge had all passed safely to the west did I breathe a sigh and continue north. That’s how I learned what “remolcador” means. 5. Communications. Pacific Baja’s coastal waters have the WORST cell phone coverage. In the Sea of Cortez and mainland, when you’re near a tower, many U.S. iphones with AT&T and Verizon programs work well. The primary Mexican cell company, TelCel, sells iphones and also a signal booster that’s popular aboard cruising boats for improving voice and limited data. But I think the best keep-it-simple solution is Garmin’s InReach, a hand-held satellite gizmo. It lets you text and email to and from any phone, tracks your GPS position worldwide, and can send Mom a daily or weekly location report. You can download targeted weather forecasts, and it can emit an SOS to get you help. How does it work? You buy the gizmo and subscribe at whichever level meets your voyaging and budget needs. Set the gizmo in your pilothouse window so its stubby antenna has at least a 180-degree view. Or carry it ashore in your pocket. It’s chargeable like a cell phone with USB. (PHOTO 3: Rains InReach satellite gizmo.) Full disclosure: My husband and I have an InReach Explorer and we pause our monthly Freedom Unlimited plan whenever we don’t need it.

HISTORIC SAILBOAT JOURNEYS AGAIN The Pequod, a 28-foot sailboat, was originally skippered by Hernán Álvarez Forn who became the first Argentinian to sail from Argentina to Antarctica in 1987. BY JOR DA N B . DA R LING

UENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA — It is a threemonth and 4,000-mile journey by sailboat between Buenos Aries, Argentina, and Deception Island in the Antarctic. The journey covers miles of sea including, a journey across Drake’s Passage with 10 to 15-foot swells and strong northwestern winds.

The Pequod, a 28-foot sailboat, made the journey for the first time in 1987 with skipper and well-known Argentinian skipper Hernán Álvarez Forn and made it again in 2021 with new skipper Manuel Pardi. Pardi and his crew of two left their homeport of Buenos Aires on the first day of 2021 and returned three months later after completing the harrowing journey to the volcanic island just off the Antarctic Peninsula. “When we arrived at Deception Island, it was an incredible moment it was a big euphoric time for me and for the Pequod because of the journey there was plenty of obstacles and things broken and it was very hard for us to get there,” said Manuel Pardi, skipper of the Pequod. “…When we arrived, it was like we did it… it was amazing and SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2021  21

unforgettable for all of us.” The island is an active volcano in the South Shetland Islands shaped like a horse-shoe and covered in barren volcanic slopes, steaming beaches, and ash-layered glaciers. The island is open to the sea through a narrow channel at Neptune’s Bellows and forms a naturally sheltered harbor, according to the Deception Island Antarctic Specially Managed Area website. Pardi’s journey didn’t begin the day he left on the Pequod, he was an avid sailor in his youth and loved to be out on the water in a boat, but life took a turn for the busier and his dream of sailing on a large adventure was put on hold. “I am almost 50-years-old and when I was young, I used to sail a lot in my youth,” said Pardi. “Then I became a lawyer and I have a family and my kids and I didn’t sail for a lot of time for more than 25 years since… and I always wanted 22  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2021

to sail… a long trip.” Three years ago, Pardi began the journey of a lifetime simply by picking up a book. Forn wrote about his journey to the Antarctic in “Antarktikos” and Pardi was reading the book when he came across an ad for the Pequod, the boat in the book. “I got a sail ad on the internet and the Pequod, which was his boat was for sale,” said Pardi. “Completely rusted and with openings in the hull and things to restore and well that happened to me that I was reading a book and I go to the ad for the boat of the book and you know… well then I bought the Pequod and I decided to it was going to be my boat to do the adventure that I was reading about and that was my project.” Pardi bought the boat, met Forn, and began repairing and restoring the boat to its original condition. During the repairs, Pardi made another unique decision that would set him apart from the original journey, he would make the trip with zero-carbon emissions. “I said I want to go to Antarctica with zero-carbon emissions… I will go to a place that it is unpolluted and pristine and I want to go electrical,” said Pardi. Pardi removed the old diesel engine which was leaking oil SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2021  23

and equipped the boat with a Torqeedo all-electric auxiliary propulsion system, which could be recharged using wind and solar energy. Unfortunately, Hernán Álvarez Forn passed away in November of 2020 at the age of 94 just months before Pardi was set to make the journey. Forn’s family asked Pardi to let Forn make the journey to Antarctica one more

time so Pardi could scatter his ashes. “The family asked me to take the ashes to Antarctica it was like honor or well something that I could accomplish and make and it was something remarkable to tell,” said Pardi. Pardi’s journey is being turned into a documentary by Fede Peretti, for more information see http://pequod.com. ar/#antartida.

UNITED STATES POWER SQUADRON REBRANDED AS AMERICA’S BOATING CLUB The club, created in 1914, is a volunteer organization providing educational opportunities to boaters throughout the United States.

By: JORDAN B. DARLING NATIONWIDE — The United States Power Squadron, a nation-

wide boating education organization, is undergoing the process of rebranding as America’s Boating Club. The club is nationally rec-

ognized and has over 300 clubs around the country with about 30,000 members nationwide. “We are a boating education organization,” said Robert Gibbs, public relations officer for America’s Boating Club. “Totally non-profit non-governmental volunteer organization our annual dues are about $140 for a family and about $100 per individual and there is a wide assortment of classes that can be taken.” The club offers educational courses for boaters of varying experience levels, there is even a 12 to 14-week course teaching boaters how to chart using paper, a sextant (a double reflecting navigation device that measures the angular distance between two visible

objects), and celestial navigation, in case a boater’s GPS goes down. “The most basic is the ABC course, which if you take that and pass the test at the end of the course you qualify for the California Boating Certificate,” said Gibbs. “And there are further courses you can take after that. Some of them are seamanship piloting and celestial navigation, marine weather, engine maintenance, cruise planning, all the ins and outs of sailing both basic and advanced.” The club was created in early 20th century Boston by a man named Robert Upton. Upton was a sailing member of the Boston Yacht Club in 1909 who became fascinated with powerboats and wanted to learn more. Upton became Rear Commodore of the Boston Yacht Club in 1912 where he created an unofficial Power Boat Division and in 1913 the Executive Committee officially established the Power Squadron and the first inkling of the United States Power Squadron was born. Since that time the club has shared in ups and downs but continues to provide education for boaters and work with other government organizations like the United States Coast Guard. The club works

with the USCG to provide free vessel safety checks for sailboats and powerboats up to 65 feet. “We have a checklist from the Coast Guard,” said Gibbs. “We are the only other organization authorized aside from the Coast Guard to be able to do vessel safety checks. We do that free of charge there is no reporting it is just a checklist of things we go over with the vessel’s owner if they pass, they get a triangular coast guard sticker or decal and they put it on the port side of their boat somewhere where it is visible.” The decal lets the Coast Guard know that the boat has been checked and passes the safety requirements for that year, decals are changed every year. Through the individual sections of the club, there are raft-ups and sail fleet races as well as on-the-water training. According to the press release from America’s Boating Club Southern California has squadrons in San Diego, Oceanside, Newport Beach. There are also clubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas areas and up to Oregon and Washington. To find a local club or get more information see https://americasboatingclub.org/.

SCIENTISTS EXPLORE CALIFORNIA COASTAL WATERS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE HUMAN IMPACT There were 12 exploratory dives that took place off of California’s coast exploring the DDT dumpsites and mineral-rich hard grounds in the California borderlands.

SAN DIEGO — Over the course of 12-days marine scientists aboard Schmidt Ocean Institute’s research vessel Falkor completed several dives off the coast of California exploring mineral-rich hard grounds and the DDT dumpsite surveyed earlier this year by Scripps. “The DDT dumpsite was two days out of 11 at sea and all the rest of the days we were on mineral-rich hard grounds,” said Chief Scientist Dr. Lisa Levin, a professor of biological oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. “There were rocks we were interested in because they are covered with ferromanganese crusts and phosphates and minerals...We want to understand what animals and microbes live in these systems so that should the environments change, we will be able to track changes.” Levin and her team explored nine locations along Southern California’s borderland and were up to 150 miles offshore, dives took place on seamounts and sea knolls which are submerged mountains and hills, underwater escarpments, or steep underwater cliffs, and the DDT dumpsite. The scientists collected samples using a remotely operated vehicle that was tethered to the ship. The vehicle was sent down in the morning and spent seven to eight hours a day collecting rocks, water, sediment, and other samples before returning to the ship. Levin and her team explored mineral-rich hard grounds which lead them to discover a whale fall and a new methane seep along 28  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  SEPTEMBER 2021

California’s coast. According to Levin, the expedition was a baseline study to look at these areas and create a better understanding of the sea life that calls rock-hard grounds home and hopefully be able to track changes later on. “We are doing what is called a baseline study,” said Levin. “We are looking at what lives there how many kinds of organisms how diverse they are and whether they have an affinity with the substrate with the surface that they are on.” During the expedition, scientists discovered two new environments in the California borderlands, a whale fall and a methane seep. These environments foster unique communities on the ocean floor, a whale fall is where a whale carcass comes to rest on the seafloor and often provides food for scavengers but the whale also releases chemicals that can fuel a community that relies on

chemical synthesis the same way a methane seep would. “They represent reducing environments,” said Levin. “They are a different kind of ecosystem on the seafloor the methane seep has animals that are getting their energy and food from chemical energy chemosynthesis rather than photosynthesis. That’s of interest, and the whale fall also because when the whale decays it produces chemicals, hydrogen sulfite, in particular, that can fuel the same kind of community as a methane seep or thermal vent so they are little patchy environments that are actually turning out to be pretty common on the California margin.” Levin said that it could take a year to two years to solidify the findings and publish but that the general impression is that California’s borderland is diverse and full of life. “They’re kind of general but the initial

impression is that the borderland is a very diverse system with every single site we visited had different species,” said Levin. “We call it heterogeneity you know there is a lot of differences, minor differences in the habitats that shape different animal communities.” Levin and her team have gathered the data to gain a baseline of the ocean and continue to track changes over time, whether it is from climate change, human exploitation or even wind power offshore. “I think you know the average person doesn’t care too much about the deep ocean but it is vulnerable to change from human activities,” said Levin. “We’ve been using the expression exploration before exploitation this cruise was a good example of that exploring our own backyard and new things trying to do things before we’ve damaged it.” The data is being returned to Scripps for further analysis.

DANA POINT BOATERS MARCH FOR THE HARBOR Dana Point boaters were protesting the almost 90 percent increase in harbor slip fees set for October of this year. By: JORDAN B. an increase in harbor slip fees that were announced in June. Boaters were sent a letter from Bellwether Financial, a member of the Dana Point Harbor Partners, on June 21 informing them that slip rates would increase by 26 to 90 percent starting on Oct. 1 in lieu of the harbor revitalization and renovation. Rates for slips under 30 feet would increase by 26 percent and the rates for the largest slip between 55 and 60 feet would increase by 90 percent.

Bellwether used public marinas from Orange County including 11 marinas that were located in Newport Beach, two which were located in Huntington Harbour, and one located in Sunset Beach to determine the average market rate. In an Aug. 10 letter addressed to Orange County, Dennis C. Winters, a legal advisor to the Dana Point Boaters’ Association, alleged that the Partners were in violation of the spirit of lease and the Tidelands Grant to the County, which states that prices will

be ‘market rate’ and pricing would be reasonably determined and consistent with the limitations on pricing as mandated by the Tidelands Grant. Winters continued by saying that the partners used the ambiguity of the term ‘market rate’, which was not defined in the master lease, to justify their methodology. In the letter Winters states that Newport is one of the most affluent areas in Orange County and had small marinas that catered to the community’s wealthiest and the Tidelands Grant was intended to provide an alternative for boaters in Dana Point away from the monopoly of Newport marinas. According to the 2019 census the median household income in Newport Beach was $127,223 compared to Dana Point which was at $99,409, an almost a $30,000 difference. they didn’t expect the jump to be so drastic without any updates to the harbor. “I am more upset about the fact that they haven’t done any of the renovations,” said Garza. “I would probably be more accepting of the fact if the work had already been completed and they were asking for additional costs because the amenities had been improved and without that, it just seems pointless they are just trying to sock it to us and who knows about the renovations.” In a July 25 newsletter from the Dana Point Boaters Association the association lists a number of grievances with the marina including crumbling docks and broken-down bathrooms. The current docks are built from concrete and covered in a layer of plywood. In some areas you can see the concrete breaking apart and the plywood has started to warp in parts of the harbor. The group of boaters said they planned to continue to make their voices heard between letters, peaceful marches, and continuing to attend the Orange County Board of Supervisors meetings. “We are going to make our voices heard peacefully at the board of supervisors meeting the following Tuesday and hopefully get some feedback,” said Addison.
