MAGICAL HISTORY TOUR HAVE YOU EVER FELT like you’ve gotten to
know someone you’ve never met in person? Maybe a favorite musician or an author? That’s kind of how we are with Brian Calvert, the writer of this month’s cruising feature. Calvert shoved off from his Friday Harbor, Wash., homeport almost 10 years ago, left his workaday life behind and pointed the bow “out there.” He’s written several stories for Sea since he began his journey, and he never disappoints with the places he’s been and the people he’s met and the things he’s seen and done. Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. And the Philippines. And the Philippines. I can’t say for certain he had an around-the-world trip in mind when he shoved off, but if he did, those plans hit a metaphorical reef in the Philippines, where he’s been cruising and cruising and cruising for the last five years. Heck, he’s been there so long he met a local woman and got married. Calvert seems genuinely interested in other cultures. He’s a true people person. He’s an adventurer — not of the “book it on Orbitz or Travelocity” ilk but more of the “oh, there’s a cove/harbor/island we haven’t visited before but let’s check it out” variety. He takes his responsibilities seriously but not himself. He knows where he’s going, even if it isn’t on the 6
chart. Maybe especially if it isn’t on the chart. Anyway, for this issue’s installment of the adventures of Furthur, Calvert takes us through several centuries of Philippines history. Not by reading from a book but by using his Selene trawler as a time machine and visiting the past, which is alive and well in the present. We’re transported to the site of Magellan’s demise, to the site of a leper colony, to a dive site that tells the story of a U.S. Navy victory 75 years ago, and to other places. Check out “Time Traveling in the Philippines” on page 36. On another note, boat show season is drawing to a close just as boating season heats up. That means you don't want to miss your chance to see a large assortment — more than 150 — of boats at the San Diego International Boat Show. Running from June 6–9 at Spanish Landing Park East on Harbor Island, the show promises to feature trailerable boats to 70-footers and everything in between. CETER A YACHTS IS A new name on the yacht-building scene, but its heritage stretches back almost 60 years. Cetera is a brand of Fiart Mare, which has been building boats since 1960, so a lot of boat-building knowledge — Fiart is working in conjunction with other Italian yacht industry luminaries — has been brought to bear in the soon-tolaunch Cetera 60. What the team has done is change the use of space on board in a process it calls vertical repositioning. What that means in the case of the Cetera 60 is simple: salon and three en suite staterooms on the main deck; dining, galley and helm on the top deck; and crew and technical spaces belowdecks. Yep, three staterooms are all on the main deck — two VIPs and a guest cabin with twin beds. A companionway runs through the middle and leads to a forward salon that opens to the bow cockpit. The upper deck, accessed via an interior staircase immediately inside the aft door, includes an L-shaped galley, an eight-person dining table — four people on a settee, four more in chairs — and a helm with twin captain’s chairs and a portside companion sofa. The space is enclosed, but side and aft windows can be opened, as can skylights overhead, to create an alfresco feel inside. Outside, two cockpits bookend the new yacht. Forward is a huge settee that, from above, looks like a D with a section of the straight side removed to allow access. Aft is a C-shaped settee around a table. The table lowers and filler cushions sit atop it to create a four-person (or more) sun lounge. Below the aft cockpit sun lounge is a tender garage and a crane. A retractable swim platform folds out of the transom to create a beach that hovers just above the waterline. The first Cetera 60 will be launched this summer, and with a pair of Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels it should reach a top speed of 23 knots, according to the builder. Cetera, ceterayachts.it

MEXICO REPORT
By CAPT. PAT RAINS
LIFE ABOARD
Mazatlan is home to Mexico’s the second largest community of liveaboard boaters. AMONG THE 540 FULL-SERVICE boat slips available at Mazatlan’s five marinas, about half
of the boats contain liveaboard singles, couples or small families, according to the port captain’s office. That means about 870 people are living aboard.
THE LEGALITIES
Mexico has no laws that prohibit living aboard, so far. It’s up to each marina to provide a variety of shore amenities and regulate guest activities, and to establish slip rates, discounts for seasonal and long-term stays, and fees for different services. Despite the country’s casual oversight, I can attest that Mazatlan’s five marinas included here are all first rate. The advent of “commuter cruising” has been a blessing to recreational boating and to resort ports such as Mazatlan. How so? Mexico’s Temporary Import Permit (TIP) allows foreign boaters to keep their vessel in Mexico duty-free for up to 10 years, during which time they can legally leave the boat in a marina or boatyard while they fly home and back for work or any reason. Prior to the TIP, Americans had to get the boat physically out of Mexico whenever they left the country, which was impractical and detrimental to marinas and boatyards.
WHY MAZATLAN?
Liveaboard boaters have at least a half dozen reasons to stay here long term. Weather and climate top the list. Mazatlan lies on the mainland at about the same latitude
as Los Cabos on the tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Both resort ports are just a few miles south of the Tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees north. But because Mazatlan’s weather is less influenced by the wide-open Pacific Ocean, boaters bask in balmy breezes during winter cruising season, below coconut palms filled with wild parrots. Thanks to five different marinas, boaters can shop for amenities and deals that fit their budget. Marina El Cid is popular with upscale sportfishers, and Marina Mazatlan offers the widest range of cruiser services, while the other marinas occupy the space between. (See Marinas subhead.) More yacht services are available here than in Los Cabos and La Paz combined and are generally less expensive. Mazatlan’s “Old Port” is an active commercial harbor that employs hundreds of diesel mechanics, welders, carpenters, machinists, and refrigeration and props services. They usually take weekend work on the yachts. SENI boatyard specializes in small ships and yachts. Around the “Marina District” are skilled tradesmen in yacht canvas and upholstery, fiberglass, rigging, LP paint and varnish,
Pictured above is Mazatlan’s Old Port, an active commercial harbor about 8 miles from the Marina District. It’s near the Centro Historico and its many shops, markets and restaurants.

TO DO
Mazatlan’s cure for “death by boredom” is Centro Historico, 20 square blocks of lovingly restored 1840s Victorian Italianate architectural gems, smack in the middle of downtown. Cobblestone streets around the lushly landscaped Plazuela Machada are lined with sidewalk cafés, trendy shops and the city’s best dining options. Provisioning is actually fun at the colorful open-air Mercado Pino Suarez, three blocks north of the Plazuela. Three blocks south is the Angela Peralta national theatre, center of Mazatlan’s lively fine-arts scene: ballet, opera, orchestral performances and period balls. Easy daysails out to the islands are popular with liveaboards. Just outside the jetty entrance to the Marina District are anchoring possibilities at Pajaros (Birds), Venado (Deer) and Lobos (Seals) islands. Then Los Hermanos (Brothers) and Cardones (Cactus) islands are on either side of the larger jetty entrance to the Old Port. Here are two dinghy explorations I enjoy. First, pass the cruise-ship docks in the Old Port and use binoculars for the next three and a half miles to peruse at least four shipyards, the navy station, docks for shrimpers and long-range tuna boats, panga repair yards, fruit orchards, market gardens and more. Second, continue another five miles southeast to explore a tranquil semi-wild estuary of mangrove forests, parrots, songbirds, butterflies, a duck preserve and aquaculture pans. electronics installation and repair, stainless tubing and more. GNMC is the yacht boatyard in the Marina District. Like Los Cabos and La Paz, Mazatlan is famous for year-round sportfishing. Liveaboards are often commuter cruisers, meaning they need to fly back and forth pretty easily while leaving the boat safely berthed. Boaters can fly to the U.S. from Mazatlan international airport (MZT) aboard Alaska, American, Delta, Aeromexico and Volaris airlines. Budgetminded owners can take an air conditioned Elite Bus to Tijuana or Nogales and walk across.
The marinas provide a comfortable home away from home for about 870 recreational boaters living aboard at Mazatlan. Here’s my list. Marina El Cid (FMI call 669-916-3468) has about 160 slips to 120 feet, a fuel dock, hotel restaurants, a pool, laundry facilities, a chandlery and sundries. Most slips are located just inside the entrance channel to the Marina District, but some side-ties may be arranged in the Sabalo South estuary in front of vacation homes. Marina guests have access to the resort’s elevated pool, restaurants, spa, golf, beach club, nightly movies on the lawn and more. Marina Fonatur Mazatlan (FMI call 669-913-3720) has about 20 slips to 110 feet on the dock in front of the GNMC boatyard, in addition to a fuel dock, a head pumpout
Five marinas with about 540 fullservice slips are home to approximately 870 liveaboards, who enjoy easy access to the larger Mazatlan area.
and a pool. This is the first marina to starboard inside the manmade yacht basin. Marina Mazatlan includes about 270 slips to 80 feet and some longer end-ties. This cruisers’ community pretty much fills the northeast quadrant of the manmade Sabalo yacht basin. The volunteer net controller of the Cruisers’ VHF Net (channel 22 at 0800 Monday through Saturday) is often in this marina office or cruisers lounge. This is one of the few marinas in Mexico that takes reservations; call (669) 669-2936. Isla Marina (FMI call 669-913-3388) features about 95 slips to 85 feet with limited power or water. Larger slips are on the south side of Isla Mazatlan, the manmade island, with smaller slips on the north side. Marina Costa Bonita (FMI call 669-9881056) has just 13 slips from 30 to 54 feet and is located inside a sheltered lobe off the northwest corner of the Sabalo yacht basin. Join the resort’s “yacht club” to get a slip with access to very nice pools and restaurants, barbecue grills, fish cleaning, dinghy storage, guest suites, a beauty spa and more.

HARDWARE HORRORS Don’t be your own worst enemy when it comes to drilling, mounting and screwing things to your boat. BY CAPT. FRANK LANIER
The prime directive with cored construction is to maintain waterproof integrity in order to prevent moisture from entering the core and causing trouble. This is particularly true with balsa or plywood, both of which can rot and allow the cored deck to separate and drastically reduce structural integrity. Long-term water exposure causes problems for modern core materials too — core separation and even disintegration in some cases — so even boats with non-wood coring aren’t immune to the problem.
For core material with no compression strength, such as balsa and foam, there are a couple of options. Method one:
1. Dig out about 1 inch of coring around THERE’S A LURKING BOAT horror that likely causes more boat damage than sinkings,
groundings, fires and alien abductions combined (though you may feel as though you’ve been probed from a financial standpoint, because repairs are usually expensive, sometimes exceeding the value of the boat itself). The issue? Water intrusion into cored decking and superstructures due to improperly mounted deck hardware.
CORING 101
A majority of today’s boat decks and superstructures are cored. Cored construction simply means the builder uses an inner and outer skin of fiberglass with some other material — end-grain balsa, plywood, foam or some other high-tech material — bonded to and sandwiched between them.
each bolt hole, but leave the upper and lower layers of fiberglass intact. 2. Tape the bottom of the holes, then fill them with thickened epoxy from above. 3. Once the epoxy is cured, re-drill the holes (through the epoxy) and mount the cleat using properly sized backing washers and a good bedding compound. The epoxy now provides compression strength and also prevents moisture intrusion into the coring.

A leaking stanchion caused the coring material to rot on this boat. It’s likely waterproof integrity was compromised by a faulty mounting project.
ECO
poor any of these areas will coincide with whatever aftermarket doodad you want to mount, however, meaning you’re going to have to do it the hard way. The good news is this: The hard way is fairly easy, as long as you have access to the underside of the deck where you’re doing the mounting. Let’s say you want to install a new cleat on a cored foredeck. The first step is to
mark and drill appropriately sized bolt holes from the top of the deck (use the cleat as a template). Once the holes are drilled, the next step depends on the type of coring. If the coring is plywood, simply seal the exposed edges of the plywood with epoxy, then mount the cleat using a backing plate or properly sized backing washers and a good marine bedding compound.
Ban the belch! keep fuel in the tank
Everything that penetrates the core, from antenna mounts to lifeline stanchions, has to be properly mounted and bedded to prevent water entry. Most boaters fail to realize that drilling a hole into their boat’s deck is exactly the same as drilling a hole in the roof of a house. In a perfect world, boat manufacturers have anticipated where all deck penetrations are necessary during construction and reverted to solid fiberglass, allowing owners to mount hardware without drilling into the core. In reality, chances are
hes ore splas m o n ! y s So ea ags soaked r l e u f r o
• Burped fuel overfill drains back into tank
Method two:
1. Take a 2-inch hole saw — or larger, depending on the size of the backing washers — and remove the coring from the underside of the deck at each bolt hole, being careful not to drill through or damage the upper layer of fiberglass. (Tip: leave the last one-quarter of an inch of coring and remove it by hand to avoid any chance of damaging the outer fiberglass layer.) 2. Once the coring is removed, if the upper layer of fiberglass is sufficiently strong, simply seal the exposed edges of the coring with epoxy and mount the cleat using properly sized backing washers and a good bedding compound. If the fiberglass is too thin to support the cleat installation, fill the entire hole with thickened epoxy (as in method one) and drill through it once it is cured.

How’s Your PSA?
It’s not a medical issue but is important to the health of your voyage and your boat. BY KEN TENNEFOSS
ASK ANYONE WHO HAS boated for any length of time and he will tell you conditions on the water can change in a

matter of minutes. I’m a professional yacht captain and instructor, and one of the first things I teach my students is about PSA: Position. Study. Approach. Position. Hold your boat’s position in the water before you attempt to dock or enter into unfamiliar waters. Learn and practice this acquired skill. It should be one of the first tools in your box of captain’s skills.
Here in the Northwest, there are few places that will not have current, wind or possibly both. Being able to hold your boat in an unchanging position in the middle of a windy Columbia River or Juan de Fuca Strait is a skill that may one day prove lifesaving. Make it part of your departure routine to practice holding position. On Mucho Gusto, after we have cleared the dock or our boathouse, we spend a few minutes raising our antennas, coiling and stowing lines and fenders, and generally getting the boat ready for open water. It is during this time that I will practice holding position while those chores are completed. Study. While holding your boat’s position, take time to survey the conditions before you start to dock or enter a harbor. Look for any hazards that may be in your way. Is the tide rising or falling? What’s the direction and strength of the wind and current? Flags on shore and other boats are great indicators. Be sure to note the position and activity of other vessels in the area. Pay particular attention to small boats, paddlers and boarders. Look to your intended destination one last time before you start your approach. Approach. After studying the conditions surrounding the area, take all the conditions present and plan your approach. Will the wind and current be moving your boat toward the dock or away? Are there any activities on other nearby vessels that may force you to change your approach? Of course, an adage applies: “Never approach a dock faster than you want to hit it.” Also, have an escape plan in mind, in case conditions change. Another saying I like: “It’s better to fold than try to play to a bad hand.” Anyone who questions a captain’s decision to go around and start his approach again is either a fool or pays big insurance premiums. During their boating lifetime, captains make hundreds of successful dockings and approaches to unfamiliar waters. Most are accomplished without a hitch, but all it takes is that one time when their attention is somewhere else, or conditions catch them unaware. We all know Murphy is a boater, but practicing PSA will help keep Murphy away.

SEA TRIAL
By PETER FREDERIKSEN
VIKING
58 CONVERTIBLE
Fishing performance combined with luxury accommodations define the latest battlewagon from a 55-year-old builder. INTRODUCED AT THE FT. Lauderdale International Boat Show last fall, the Viking 58 Convertible sits at the size midpoint of the New Jersey-based builder’s fleet, which ranges from 38 to 93 feet. Now in its 55th year of continuous operation, Viking — still family owned and operated — builds yachts at its facility on the Bass River just north of Atlantic City, and its new 58 has already proven itself on the tournament circuit. It appeals to hardcore anglers as well as cruising yachtsmen, because it checks the box for performance, luxury and accommodations. I stepped aboard the 58 Convertible in Atlantic City before my sea trial, and there was no mistaking its open-ocean DNA. The cockpit covers 165 square feet and every inch is utilized. The first thing that caught my eye was the transom fishbox, which doubles as a live baitwell and can be equipped with multiple tuna tubes. For West Coast and Central America-bound tournament anglers, this setup is made to order. Below the deck, a second livewell and a stowage well add more capacity and can be fitted with an ice machine discharge to keep the catch chilled. Rounded coamings in the cockpit reduce wear and tear on anglers and crew when they are working a fish with standup tackle. An aluminum plate is sandwiched into the fiberglass sole to anchor a fighting chair, a rocket launcher or a cockpit table. Stowage lockers built into the cockpit sides help keep the decks clear and also conceal the Glendinning shore-power cord, raw- and freshwater outlets and hoses, electric deep-water and kite-reel DC terminals, and racks for the mop, gaff and tag stick. An extended flybridge deck overhang offers shade and spray protection for anyone who is sitting on the observation mezzanine. Beneath the mezzanine’s Sunbrella lounge are compartments for tackle, stowage for gear, a refrigerator and a freezer, a bait tray and ample choices for customization. A refrigerated drink cooler is built into the salon entrance step, which eliminates the need for a portable chest. Our test boat also was equipped with a walkthrough transom door with a lift gate, a Seakeeper 9 gyro stabilizer and custom teak decks.
STEP INSIDE
An electric sliding door opens into the salon. Viking offers buyers a choice of teak and walnut in gloss and satin finishes, and an in-house design group, WBC Design, handles each customer’s needs and wants, from carpeting to custom sculptures and paintings. No two Vikings are ever alike, and our test boat carried the tradition of luxury and

practicality throughout the interior. To port, an L-shaped sofa with rod stowage underneath is complemented by a burl coffee table. To starboard, a flat-screen TV rises from the cabinetry, which also contains the electrical distribution panels, an ice-cube maker, and bottle and glass stowage. Air conditioning flows quietly from the hidden registers behind the valences. Moving forward, the dinette seats four, and two barstools in the U-shaped portside galley increase seating options. Amtico vinyl flooring in the galley wipes clean with a damp mop, and a bank of appliances features under-counter drawer-style Sub-Zero refrigeration (a second ice-maker is in the freezer), an electric cooktop, a microwave-convection oven, a stainless steel sink and engineered stone countertops. Abundant stowage in maple-lined cabinetry swallows supplies, dinnerware, cookware and groceries.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Moving below, the three-stateroom, two-head layout delivers commonalities of comfort and privacy. The master stateroom is amidships. Its walk-around queen-size bed — a Handcraft Viking Slumber #8 innerspring mattress — is flanked by night tables and reading lights. The mattress lifts to reveal a massive stowage well with room for golf clubs and other bulky items. A wall
Viking has become quite adept at creating yachts that meet multiple requirements: cockpits that are ready for battle (and for people to observe said battle from the comfy mezzanine) and interiors that are ready for socializing, entertaining, and cooking and dining.
Clearly Viking has designed the 58 Convertible to exceed the comfort and traveling needs for family cruising and making tracks to the Winner’s Circle along the tournament circuit.

Seen from above, the 58’s cockpit provides ample space to fight a fish, and the semirounded coamings ease the wear and tear on anglers’ bodies. With 6 feet of headroom and a fully finished look, the engine room is another feature of the yacht that owners will want to brag about. Multiple MFDs dominate the flybridge helm station, and even more displays and instruments in an electronics box drop from the hardtop. The captain is well equipped.

of maple-lined hanging lockers covers his and hers requirements for fishing, cruising and yacht club festivities. An en suite head features a fiberglass shower stall with a molded seat and a glass door. Side-by-side berths, also with Handcraft mattresses, are located in the starboard stateroom, while the forward stateroom has a centerline queen bed as the standard arrangement, but crossover berths are available as an option, featuring a double and a single. Both staterooms share the second head and shower. A laundry center is located in the companionway.
TOURNEY-TESTED FLYBRIDGE
The flybridge layout is the result of thousands of hours on the tournament trail. A center console command station provides excellent visibility for the operator, whether he’s tracking the fishing action or navigating to the next port. Electronics and engine instrumentation stow in a raised fiberglass console whose clear acrylic lid lifts on stainless steel gas struts. Additional compartments with accessories flank a Release Marine teak helm pod whose single-lever electronic controls have bow thruster buttons built into the handles. A dropdown electronics box in the bridge hardtop contains additional electronics, and Miya Epoch teaser reels are recessed in a compartment directly overhead of the operator. Twin Release Marine Trillion Series helm seats provide a comfortable station for the operator and a companion. Additional seating is found in lounges with reversible backrests that flank the helm and on a center lounge forward. Plenty of stowage space is available beneath the lounges. A three-sided Costa Clear enclosure with front vents delivers all-weather protection. Up on a Palm Beach Towers tuna tower, the upper helm and control station includes more electronics, a fiberglass buggy top and a freshwater outlet to rinse off salt.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Viking is known for its engineering, and the proof is obvious in the engine room. Accessed from the mezzanine and down a four-rung powder-coated aluminum ladder, the room’s
centerline headroom is nearly 6 feet tall. Completely painted in bright white Awlgrip, the area resembles a hospital operating room, and I could see myself in the overhead, which is the bottom side of the salon floor. The floor is 4 inches thick and composed of fiberglass and composite coring for thermal and acoustical insulation. The boat’s MTU engines have better than 2 feet between them and are easy to get around to reach the four Dometic air conditioning units and the house and ship service batteries in fiberglass boxes outboard on the port side. Racor fuel/water separators are at the front of each engine. On the starboard-side bulkhead, an easy-to-follow freshwater manifold and a Grundfos pump will facilitate keeping the systems operating properly. A forward centerline hatch exposes the raw-water pickups for the mains, and every sea valve and seacock is painted with white Awlgrip and labeled. Delta T ventilation intakes provide ample fresh air for combustion and its water intrusion suppression design keeps the area clean and dry. Water pickups for the air conditioners, refrigeration, the Sea Recovery desalinator and the 21.5 kw Onan generator are readily accessible and easy

to maintain. Although the 58 Convertible is likely to be run by a captain, this ride is well within the ability of a knowledgeable owner/operator.
PERFORMER
The Viking 58 Convertible is available with engine choices from MAN and MTU. Our test boat had the MTU 10V 2000 M96L package rated at 1,600 mhp each. Those big diesels delivered rapid acceleration with virtually no sign of smoking at any throttle setting, whether we were attempting a Bimini start or reversing hard to simulate chasing a big fish. Backing down, the Viking 58 managed to reach 8 to 9 knots while the crown in the transom did yeoman’s work moving the water away from the stern and keeping the cockpit dry. At full throttle and 2432 rpm, the boat’s GPS recorded 42 knots, with 1,500 gallons of fuel, full water and seven people aboard. With the yacht running in the ocean, the molded lift strakes did an admirable job of

deflecting spray, with the water breaking just forward of the deckhouse windshield and the downward angle of the strakes diverting the spray away from the boat. The Sea Star Optimus EPS steering was finger light, fast and responsive. Viking’s construction includes a resin-infused hull with end-grain balsa sandwiched between the fiberglass laminates. Virtually 90 percent of what goes into a Viking is manufactured in-house, the company being vertically integrated, from its fiberglass fuel tanks to the interior furniture to the custom metal fabrications including bow rails. Viking uses a pair of five-axis profiling milling machines to create its molds, which are designed in-house too. Palm Beach Towers and Atlantic Marine Electronics are onsite Viking subsidiaries that supply tuna towers and navigation and entertainment packages respectively, which allow the Viking 58 and other models to be delivered turnkey ready from the Viking factory to each customer.

PRESTIGE 680 FLYBRIDGE
An isolated master, an in-the-mix galley and multiple entertaining areas make this a giant dayboat with coastal cruising aspirations.
SPECS Flybridge may be the middle yacht in this French builder’s Yacht Series, which stretches from 63 feet to 75 feet, but it is all yacht and, as they say, it punches well above its weight. Here’s a prime example. More than a few yachts of this size offer a separate stairway from the salon to the master suite, which imbues the cabin with large-yacht privacy and feel, but the Prestige 680 goes a step further: the master suite is forward. Yep, forward. Now, you may be thinking, “This is where the hull gets pointy and it’s where the VIP stateroom is usually placed, with a berth that is equally pointy at one end.” Throw that thinking out with your morning espresso. MASTER RETREAT
The Prestige 680 owner’s stateroom has none of the usual taper of forward cabins. Like amidships cabins, it spans the full beam and has large windows on each side that provide a spectacular view to owners as they stretch in the morning and decide what to do with the day. In fact, if I’d been “beamed down” à la “Star Trek,” to the middle of this cabin, I would have guessed I was in a typical amidships full-width master stateroom. Even the en suite head, which is forward, doesn’t give away the location. Only in the walk-in closet, also forward, does the telltale slope to the sole say, “Hey, this is the bow.” The master suite’s centerline berth is two inches
30 SEAMAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2019
+Sea Trial Prestige.indd 30

wider than a queen and is accessible on both sides, so owners can actually get into bed with some dignity. To port is the crowning touch: a large sofa/lounge that encourages folks to lean back and enjoy the view through the large window. There is the usual vanity/ desk, of course, and the starboard side is devoted to a built-in multi-drawer bureau. The result is quite clearly an owner’s getaway that delivers complete privacy.
VIP & MORE
That isn’t to say the VIP stateroom, evicted from its usual real estate in the bow, is second class. In fact, some owners are likely to toss a coin to decide which cabin they’ll stake as their own. The VIP spans the 680 amidships and takes full advantage of the 17-foot, 4-inch beam, offering all the delights usually bestowed upon an owner’s suite in this location: oversized windows, a centerline berth, and an en suite head with a shower. Yes, the VIP does give up an inch or two here and there. The berth is a few inches smaller than queen size and is tapered at the foot, but there is still walking-around room on each side. The shower stall is a bit smaller, the enclosed portside head loses the full effect of the window, and a smaller hanging locker takes the place of a big closet. The vanity/desk actually seems nicer, although it’s going to be difficult to get any work done there, right next to the big window. And, of course, VIP occupants share the stairwell from the salon with guests in the forward stateroom or staterooms. Note that I referred to both singular and plural on the guest accommodations. That’s because buyers can choose either two smaller cabins, each with single berths that slide together into a double, or a single full-beam cabin with a centerline berth that is nearly queen size. With either arrangement, a single head with a shower doubles as a day head and has access from the foyer. And if those don’t supply enough sleeping accommodations, a quite civilized crew cabin is aft and features twin berths and a private head with a shower. This could be for teenagers (or a mother-in-law suite) if owners don’t wish to have a captain, but the downside is that the only access is from the transom, so the yacht has to be stopped to allow access to the space.
This yacht may be French but the thinking is clearly North American. Comfortable social areas populate the Prestige 68, both on the main deck (above) and the flybridge (bottom). The main-deck helm (below) features all the latest electronics and an IPS joystick behind an expansive windshield.
INSIDE SCOOP
Up on the main deck, the Prestige 680 nicked a design element from its larger sibling, the 750, by placing the galley all the way aft. This yacht may be French but the thinking is clearly North American. Europeans prefer their chefs to be tasted and not seen, but American boaters rather enjoy the family atmosphere. Not only is the galley aft but so is the interior dining table, a glass-topped masterpiece that unfolds from drinks-andsnacks size to full dining for six people. Its aft location gives diners a fine view of the world through the stainless steel SEAMAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2019 31

sliding doors. These doors — a trio that can open fully to let in fresh air — can move either left or right, allowing direct access to serve food from the galley to the shaded dining table on the aft deck. The galley also wins points for putting the chef out of the line of traffic, separated by a Corian-topped island that can serve as a bar, a buffet, or simply a place to make sandwiches. The galley, which has a grand view, features a full-height refrigerator, a microwave/grill, an induction cooktop, and (nice touch) a wooden floor, so the inevitable spills clean up easily. Forward in the salon is clearly the entertainment area, with a U-shaped settee whose loose hassocks face a low console with a popup TV. The windows span from the ceiling to behind the couch, and the outside bulwarks are cut away, replaced by stainless steel rails, so nothing blocks occupants’ view. Tucked into the forward console next to the helm is a wine chiller and lockers that hold glassware, and the top of the console is fitted with sea rails, turning it into a minibar area. Behind an imposing windshield, the helm fills the starboard corner with a dash display of three monitors that are tilted for minimal reflection, and the skipper gets a doublewide seat with a folding bolster for standing and a nicely placed footrest for normal operation. A door to the sidedeck is just behind the helm seat, providing access during docking.
GREAT OUTDOORS
The aft deck is pleasantly arranged, including the previously mentioned settee and table, but a thoughtful touch is an electric roll-down sunshade that keeps guests from frying in the afternoon sun. The flybridge overhang provides full coverage for the cockpit as well as the sidedeck. Arranged to be yet another entertainment area, the foredeck includes a triplewide sunpad with rails for security and an electric buggy-style Bimini top that extends up and over when it’s time for a break from the sun. With teak decks all around and a forward couch, this is likely to be a popular spot at anchor. This leaves the flybridge, which, no

In fact, this is likely to be the gathering spot for everyone aboard while the boat’s underway. Easy steps lead through a large hatch (cockpit protection on rainy days), and the entire aft section is devoted to a wraparound lounge with a table on chrome legs, for either dining or aperitifs. Just forward is an outdoor galley with a sink, a refrigerator, stowage and, of course, an electric grill. A fore-and-aft couch is to port, for passengers kibitzing with the chef. The helm is forward and the skipper isn’t going to be lonely, thanks to a doublewide helm seat behind the dash and another doublewide seat to starboard. Add to that a seriously huge sunpad that wraps in an L shape around the area forward of the dash and behind the protective windshield, and the skipper won’t want for company. The fiberglass hardtop is a no-brainer option, since it includes a sliding canvas sunroof for breeze and sun when desired.
PROPULSION
Power for the Prestige 680 is a pair of Volvo Penta IPS1200 diesels of 900 hp each, driving pods rather than a conventional shaft for propulsion. Not only does this give the skipper fingertip control with a joystick when docking, but the space-saving pod drives contribute to all that space belowdecks. A standard bow thruster adds extra oomph when wind and current are acting adversarial during docking. Standard equipment includes a 27.5 kw genset, and 680 models brought to North America are upgraded with 81,000 Btu chilled-water air-conditioning systems. With the Garroni-designed modified hull and the IPS1200s, the Prestige 680 tops out in the high 20s (reaching 30 knots according to company testing) and cruises in the mid-20s. It’s not the fastest in its class but certainly comfortable and seaworthy in all conditions. SEAMAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2019 33

NIMBUS T11
This dayboat fits the builder’s mission of “more effective utilization over shorter periods of time.” propensity toward indecision may want to avoid the Nimbus T11, the new dayboat/ center console/walkaround from the Swedish builder. That’s because the T11 comes with seven power options: triple Mercury Verado 300s; twin Mercury Verado 300s, 350s or 400s; twin Volvo Penta V-8 400 hp gasoline inboards; twin Volvo Penta D4 300 hp diesel inboards; or twin Volvo Penta D6 400 hp diesel inboards. Nimbus says top speed with the twin 300 outboards will exceed 40 knots. Triple 300s should result in 50 knots of get-there speed. While the speed is nice, the 40-foot, 7-inch Nimbus T11 — the T stands for Tender, and the series replaces the Nova series — is a social boat. A three-seat helm is in between. That’s seating for a dozen folks, easily. Immediately aft of the helm seats is a galley console equipped with a grill (optional) and refrigerator/ice-maker combos chosen by the buyer. Below are two berths, one forward of the helm under the sun lounge and the other under the helm, and a head with a shower. Four people can sleep comfortably after a day of waterborne activity during a weekend afloat. With options such as joystick steering, a gyro stabilizer, a diesel genset and air conditioning, buyers can create a Scandinavian-built oasis of their choosing.

E HAVE ENJOYED five years of blissful cruising in the Philippines. Warm days, secluded anchorages, phenomenal diving and incredible sunsets. It’s all a boater could ask for. But there is more. Voyaging by boat here brings one close to a treasure trove of history, as our vessel has been transformed into a time machine, opening a portal to phenomenal historical events that span five centuries. (Ed. note: Visit FurthurAdventures.com to read about Calvert’s nine years at sea.) One of the first amazing places we visit in our floating time machine is in Cebu. It is the second largest city in the country, ultramodern with new skyscrapers sprouting like weeds, yet this is the site of one of the most celebrated and ancient events in the country: the day the Filipinos kicked some Spanish butt! Let’s set our time-travel clock to April 27, 1521. Ferdinand Magellan landed with a full assembly of heavily armored conquistadors — shiny armor, sharp swords, muskets and forged steel–tipped lances — ready to invade and do battle with the local indigenous population. The mission was to force them into an alliance with the king of Spain, and no resistance was expected. Local chief Lapu Lapu had other ideas. He rousted a group of nearly naked warriors armed only with wooden shields and spears to ward off the strange creatures coming to shore. Ah, but he had Mother Nature on his side. Magellan had picked the wrong place to wade ashore weighed down in armor: a thick, muddy, shallow beach.
Furthur rests at anchor in one of countless coves in the Philippines, where Brian Calvert has been cruising for the last five years.

Imagine the sight as the invincible Spanish troops, with their state-of-the-art weapons, simply got stuck in the mud and the natives beat them silly. Soon Magellan, famed navigator and explorer, was killed in the battle and the invaders retreated, not to return for quite a while. Lapu Lapu is a national hero. We visit a local park that features a huge statue of and monument to him. It’s just one of the time travels a cruising yacht provides. Sitting on the decks of Furthur, I can imagine the hysteria during the Battle of Mackan as we travel in time. Today the island is home to the Cebu Yacht Club, many high-end resorts and an international airport.
Peaceful Warrior Next up on the chronological path we find what’s likely the nation’s most cherished hero, José Rizal. Subic Bay Yacht Club is on one of the many Rizal-named streets in the Philippines, much like Washington Avenue in the U.S. Dozens of statues and memorials to this noble patriot stand in every part of the country. Rizal was not a warrior, however. No body count nor heroic battles are attributed to him. His sword was the mightiest: the pen. He wrote several books that championed independence. Until the Spanish executed him, which energized the Filipinos to revolt. I find it a very Filipino move to have the country’s most loved national hero be an author; it says a lot about the people.
Site of Suffering Furthur’s time travels take us to 1942, to the historical island of Corregidor, the guardian of Manila Bay. We anchor in a protected lagoon, just off the main wharf, take the dinghy ashore and are greeted by a local memorial guide. He takes us via jeep around the island as the tour unfolds and he tells an amazing story. Gen. MacArthur retreated with his outnumbered forces to Corregidor after a last-stand battle on the Bataan peninsula. Japanese forces bombarded the island for 72 days before they landed. The last Filipino and American forces sought protection in the Malinta Tunnel. After a siege, the remaining forces surrendered on May 6, 1942. Gen. MacArthur was evacuated via PT boat from a small bay on the west side of the island, where he made his famous promise, “I shall return.” And return he did. In 1945 MacArthur led the Allied troops that took back the island and liberated the Philippines. On the far side of the island, overlooking the bay where Furthur awaits us, is the Japanese memorial. It consists of Buddhist shrines, cherry trees and markers for the thousands of dead Japanese troops, many of whom took their own life rather than surrender. The monument tells of the gruesome wasted sacrifices the emperor
(Top row, l. to r.) Donna and Brian visit Culion, site of a former leper colony, and of an effort that eradicated leprosy. A statue of Lapu Lapu towers as a warning to the Spanish not to return. A mortar at Corregidor Island is a reminder of war, as is a bronze monument to the soldiers who fought and died there. José Rizal is considered the Philippines’ most cherished hero, and monuments to his life (bottom row), including this one in Manila, dot the islands. 38 SEAMAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2019

AS WE SWIM THROUGH THE WRECKS, I CAN ALMOST HEAR THE HELLCATS WHINING
AS THEY DIVE TO BOMB THE SHIPS demanded of his people and forced on the rest of the world. During the day-long tour, the carnage, suffering and destruction are laid out before us. It is chilling. The bombed out barracks, the tunnels where the troops sought shelter for 72 days, the now silent artillery all take us through a portal to a time of great suffering and courage.
Vestiges of Battle Not far from the site of the Battle of Corregidor, another battle was waged that created an unexpected opportunity many decades later. The Japanese, facing inevitable defeat in 1944, moved their supply fleet out of Manila to a hidden bay on the remote island of Busuanga. The Allied forces found the fleet and planned and undertook a daring long-range air raid. One hundred and twenty fighter bombers and dive bombers took off from the Fast Carrier Fleet, but given their limited range they had only 20 minutes to destroy an entire fleet. Today, the history of that long-ago day is still evident, as the seabed beneath the battle site is a wreck-diving mecca. Eight ships in the same area are all on the bottom at recreational diving depths. As we swim through the wrecks, I can almost hear the Hellcats whining as they dive to bomb the ships and sense the mayhem that must have followed as eight ships were sunk in one morning.
A Haven Not all history is war. Medical history was made on a tiny island in the Palawan region decades ago when Culion became a leper colony. For decades lepers were moved to the island for isolation. In the late 1900s, the medical field’s focus shifted to finding a cure, and many scientists and doctors came to the island to work on a cure for leprosy. The efforts paid off. In 2006 the World Health Organization declared that the epidemic was over, leprosy was declared cured, Culion was leper free and the Culion miracle had been fulfilled. Today, one can visit the remains of the hospital and visit a great museum with displays that highlight the change from isolation to cure. We have to go, so we drop the hook just off the town’s shores, find a great dinghy landing and wander around looking for information. As often happens, just the right person comes to us. A friendly young man sees us dining and introduces himself as Pastor Hermie. He is a local and a descendant of lepers who lived in the colony: his parents and grandparents. He is not infected. He takes us on a heartfelt tour of the hospital, the dormitories (Clockwise from top) Refugees from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam arrived by the thousands in boats just like this one. Calvert take a moment to think in a dormitory for lepers on Culion Island. A marble marker commemorates another kilometer along the path of the Bataan Death March. and the museum — right into the heart of the old facility. He explains that there have been no new cases of the disease and those who were affected had seen the disease go into remission. Our visit comes to an emotional peak. Our guide introduces us to one of the survivors, a frail old woman whose piercing eyes tell a story. She offers me the bandaged stub where a hand once was, inviting a touch. I admit to feeling a bit of jolt. Touching a leper brings back all sorts of themes, from “Ben Hur” on. I see an opportunity to connect in a way I have never experienced. My faith overcomes my fear and I embrace the offer of a handshake. The old lady seems to know the conflict I’m feeling and what it means to touch her, because she gleams right through me when we touch. I feel my soul light up as the experience leaves me quivering. I will never forget those eyes!
Peace & War Moving along the historic plane, we moor Furthur at the Subic Bay Yacht Club, once the site of the officer’s club for the U.S. Navy base, and hop on our motorcycle. We dial the time machine to the late 1970s and head for a United Nations refugee site nearby. Thousands of refugees fled war-torn Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in small, overloaded, inadequate boats to seek a new home. The United Nations established the Philippines Refugee Processing Center in 1980 and proceeded to aid 400,000 refugees. The people were given proper vaccinations, certifications and often basic English skills before being transferred to the U.S., Canada, Norway and France. As the need subsided, the UN left the site in the 1990s, but Filipinos did not want this amazing site to return to the jungle, so they established a park and museum. We ride up to the site, which sits high in the hills and overlooks the area of the infamous Bataan Death March on one side and a once-massive U.S. Navy base on the other. The site also has the well-maintained Buddhist shrines erected during its peak to provide refugees a spiritual base. The different cultures are depicted by the detailed shrines from each affected country. The memorial is a testament to peace and humanity, yet a reminder of the horrors of war. Not far from the UN settlement camp we ride along the wellmarked Bataan Death March route. Each kilometer is noted by a marble marker.
Today We return to Furthur. Our time machine has taken us from the first Spanish invasion to the war-torn days of WWII and then a peaceful time after the Vietnam War. The centuries of suffering inflicted on the Filipino people by an assortment of invaders sheds a light on the people we now love. Their remarkable ability to find happiness in times of peril, to survive harsh and inhuman treatment, and yet to today open their hearts and homes to all visitors, that is the Pinoy Spirit. DIESEL-ELECTRIC HYBRID DRIVE SYSTE MS , BUT YOU SHOU LD, B ECAUSE TH EY’ R E GAI N I NG I N POPU L ARIT Y. BY CAPT. TOM SE RIO
A FE W YEARS AGO ,
I attended the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to research hybrid propulsion systems on yachts for another story. To my dismay, I found mostly applications from vendors that suited commercial vessels or the larger and smaller recreational product stream. I was more interested in the “silver bullet” of hybrid systems for the midrange market, about 35-footers up to approximately 100-foot yachts. Vendors I spoke to back then were a bit shy, telling me there really wasn’t a strong desire from the midrange U.S. recreational market and that builders, and certainly owners, didn’t want to be the first one to incorporate it into a yacht. Between the price for such systems, the perceived long return on investment and the brand impact if it didn’t succeed, there wasn’t an open forum to support the opportunity to satisfy a potential need. Well, something must have been going on behind the curtain, because a few short years later, we are seeing yacht brands selling in America that tout the virtues of such systems, along with their benefits to the recreational boater. Let’s see what the hubbub is all about regarding diesel-electric hybrid systems on boats, and who is doing what.
Adler Suprema 76
TH E B I G K I DS Large-yacht applications of hybrid systems have made a splash, including Oceanco’s massive Project Bravo, a 357-footer that features a hybrid propulsion system. M/Y Savannah, a 274-foot Feadship, is touted as the first hybrid motoryacht. With a single Wartsila diesel engine and central prop shaft, Savannah also has three gensets to generate electricity and an azimuthing stern thruster. Heesen Yachts is also in the hybrid business. One of its recent launches, the 163-foot M/Y Home, can be operated on diesel mechanical or diesel electrical mode using its twin MTU 12V diesels and electric shaft motors. So the transition of hybrid power from the commercial sector — freighters, offshore supply vessels and others — to superyachts is proven. But are the systems and benefits scalable to the midrange market? SEAMAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2019 43

W H AT I S IT ? The word “hybrid” can have a number of dictionary-defined applications, but for our purposes, let’s keep it simple and go with this: a hybrid vessel is one that is able to operate using either two fuels or power sources. And for the context of this story, we’ll limit those two sources to diesel and electric. Just like in a hybrid automobile, there are two power sources for propulsion: a combustion engine and an electric motor. This differs from an electric car or boat, which has only an electric motor spinning the driveshaft(s) — no combustion engine component. In a hybrid boat, the propeller shaft is driven by a combustion engine, an electric motor or, at times, both. Powering the electric motor is a series of batteries, charged either by the diesel engine when it’s running, a generator or, in some systems, solar chargers. Is there a need for hybrid propulsion systems? Just because they can, does that mean they should? There are many compelling reasons to go hybrid, which can include the following: • Quieter operation • Improved efficiency • Increased range • Reduced emissions • Allowed in zero-emission zones • Decreased running costs • Reduced vibrations
SILENT YACHTS Silent Yachts is trying to go beyond hybrid power to full electric, with two versions of its Silent 55 that have no diesel engines. The Cruiser version is the standard and includes twin 30 kw turnable saildrive e-motors; the E-Power version
features twin 250 kw e-motors. Folks who aren’t ready to fully cut ties to diesel have a Hybrid Power option, which features twin 220 hp diesel engines and twin 14 kw e-motors. All three versions include 30 high-efficiency solar panels.

A look at the benefits to the recreational boating sector reveals one big advantage: a reduced carbon footprint. Reduced, or even eliminated, exhaust gases is a significant reason some buyers and builders go hybrid. Reduced exhaust odors is another. A quieter boating experience is created by reduced noise and vibrations, as electric motors run smoother than combustion engines. Another benefit of electric motor propulsion is the fact full torque is created instantly, which improves the response from the throttles when the system is in electric drive mode.
A benefit of electric motor propulsion is the fact full torque is created instantly.
SA M E ? D I F F E R E NT ? Even though there may be multiple propulsion systems, what stays the same is the number of drive shafts. On a single-screw boat, there is still one shaft and prop. Same rule for a twin screw: two shafts and props. What is different is the drive connection to spin the drive shaft and prop. With a true diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system, the shaft from the diesel engine runs to the gearbox and the propeller shaft runs from the gearbox through the hull to the strut. Power is provided from the diesel engine to the shaft. There can be an electric motor that is either geared to the gearbox that takes over the drive job or that is in-line with the shaft.
• GREENLINE DIESEL DRIVE CHARGING MODE
W H O H A S W H AT ? Several builders are now in the hybrid game. One is Adler Yacht, with its 76-foot Suprema, which is built of carbon-fiber. It’s a semicustom yacht with Adler’s first hybrid propulsion system, created by a team of specialists from the aviation, automotive and marine industries. Adler’s development, a Hybrid Marine System, consists of twin 1,150 hp Caterpillar diesel engines and twin ATE high-efficiency 100 kw motors/generators. This configuration allows for three cruising mode options: 1 Electric 2 Hybrid 3 Direct diesel The ATE units are mounted on the shaft between the engine and the gearbox and can either drive the shaft or declutch and act as a generator. This configuration allows one engine to run in diesel mode and one in electric mode. In electric or ECO mode, the Adler Suprema can run up to 11 knots; in diesel mode it can run wide open at 30 knots. Adler touts an ultra-long range of 3,500 n.m. at 8 knots. Greenline Yachts is also a player, with a series of hybrid yachts. Launched in 2009, the Greenline 33 was the builder’s first yacht with the hybrid, or H-Drive, system, which

ELCO A combustion engine, an electric motor and batteries comprise Elco’s Hybrid Electric Parallel system. For quiet cruising, electric mode is the choice. To move along much more quickly and

has expanded to some of its other models. Coupled with Volvo or Cummins powerplants, the H-Drive can run in diesel or electric mode, and it can operate in charging mode. Greenline goes a step further with solar panel options that assist in charging the batteries, for extended power without running the generators. Volvo has tossed its hat in the ring, too. Last year it introduced a hybrid system for IPS pod drives that will be available in 2021. Promoting better low-end torque than a combustion engine offers, Volvo expects better maneuvering at low speeds with the hybrid system coupled to an alreadyproven pod-drive system. Here’s a synopsis from the manufacturer: “A clutch and electric motor are added between the engine and the IPS pod. The electric motor is supported by scalable (depending on application needs) Li-ion battery packs that can be charged externally using AC or DC chargers; or recharged using the primary diesel engine. Opening of the clutch allows the boat to run in electric-only mode, and with the clutch closed both diesel and electric power can be used in parallel. In terms of operation, the captain will use the familiar control interfaces of the IPS system, with the addition of new drive modes to choose from.”
Hybrid propulsion systems are here to stay.
LI M ITATI O N S Understand that when a hybrid propulsion system is in hybrid or electric mode, the boat’s speed is typically on the lower end of the range, usually not more than 15 knots. Above this speed, the diesel configuration typically powers the vessel. At lower speeds, combustion engines are not at their peak performance, but electric motors can be, and with maximum torque, tight-quarters maneuvering is not an issue. At planing speeds, diesel engines perform better and are more efficient. Additionally, all that power to run the electric motors requires a bank of batteries and power distributors or switchboards to manage the juice. This equates to needed space and maintenance items, in addition to the engines. Hybrid propulsion systems are here to stay. From commercial vessels to cars to boats, hybrid propulsion is a new alternative that is going mainstream quickly.

he only thing worse than not having crucial safety gear on board is to have it fail at the moment it is needed. This is especially true for EPIRBs and PLBs, both of which are expected to work flawlessly in an emergency, every time, despite minimal maintenance and constant exposure to the harsh marine environment. Make sure you keep your emergency beacon ready, willing and able.
The primary purpose of any emergency signaling device is to pinpoint its location and facilitate rescue within the “golden day,” that first 24 hours following an emergency during which the majority of survivors can (statistically, anyway) be saved. In essence, such beacons take the “search” out of a search-and-rescue mission. An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) goes a long way toward accomplishing that goal.
WHAT THEY DO When activated, emergency beacons transmit a coded message on the 406 MHz distress frequency, which is then relayed via the Cospas-Sarsat global satellite system and earth stations to the nearest Rescue Coordination Center (RCC). Units that feature built-in GPS can provide a location accuracy of 150 feet or less. EPIRBs additionally transmit a continuous signal on 121.5 MHz, which allows searchand-rescue units to home in on its location using radio direction finders once they are in the vicinity.
EPIRB VS. PLB The popularity of PLBs has soared in recent years due to their portability and lower costs, so why not just skip an EPIRB altogether and go with something you can wear? While PLBs
and EPIRBs work in exactly the same manner, there are a number of differences between them, beyond size. While a PLB transmits a distress signal for a minimum of 24 hours, transmission time for an EPIRB is double that, a minimum of 48 hours. An EPIRB can be configured to automatically deploy and activate in the event of an emergency; a PLB can’t. Category I EPIRBs are designed to float free from a sinking vessel and turn on automatically when they come into contact with water. A Category II rating denotes an EPIRB that is manually activated and deployed. As to downsides, an EPIRB is registered to a specific vessel, which means you can’t legally take it to use aboard another vessel, unlike a PLB, which is registered to a person. That highlights a desirable feature of PLBs. They are legal for use on both land and sea, so they can accompany owners on any adventure, from exploring the Amazon to hiking a remote mountain pass.
SELF-TESTS Once the physical inspection is complete, conduct a self-test by following the manufacturer’s instructions. Following the instructions is crucial to ensure your beacon is working properly and to prevent accidental activation. An EPIRB or PLB is allowed to radiate a single burst during a 406 MHz beacon self-test, one specially coded so it is ignored by the Cospas-Sarsat system. Most EPIRBs have a visible test switch that is springloaded, so it can’t be left on inadvertently and drain the battery. Depending on the unit, a combination of beeps, lights or strobe flashes will indicate its test circuits are operating properly. Many newer EPIRBs and PLBs will show tests and results via an integrated display. PLBs must be manually activated and some units are not very intuitive to turn on. Routine testing not only serves to confirm proper operation but also provides familiarization with activating the unit in the event of an emergency. If an EPIRP or PLB is accidentally activated, turn the unit off and cancel the false alert by calling the nearest U.S. Coast Guard station. They will, in turn, contact the nearest Rescue Coordination Center to cancel the alert. SEAMAGAZINE.COM JUNE 2019
+ Sea feature Beacons.indd 49

4/29/19 10:08 AM
TESTING & MAINTENANCE EPIRBs and PLBs should be inspected monthly or prior to any extended cruise. When inspecting and conducting any test, exercise extreme caution to avoid inadvertent activation and generation of a false distress signal.
Battery Expiration Next up, check the battery’s expiration date. It will be displayed on the beacon manufacturer’s label or possibly a separate sticker. Battery life for most units is five years, although some newer models exceed that. The battery must be replaced on or before the expiration date listed, or if the beacon has been activated.
Exterior Inspection Start by thoroughly inspecting the exterior of the PLB or EPIRB for any physical damage: corrosion, cracking, water ingress, etc. Cracks or damage to the case can allow water intrusion and cause the unit to malfunction or fail. If you note any damage, send the unit to an authorized service facility immediately. If the unit needs cleaning, simply wipe it down with a damp soft cloth. It should go without saying, but here we go: Never clean a PLB or EPIRB with household cleaners, bleach, sanitizers, soaps, gasoline or anything else. Just plain old water.
Be sure to thoroughly inspect the exterior of the EPIRB or PLB and also the bracket or housing that keeps it secure. Physical damage to either is reason enough for repair or replacement. Also check the hydrostatic release unit expiration date (near the top of the middle image), to ensure it is in working order. And since registration is mandatory, find the instructions on the device (above right).
Mounting Brackets EPIRBs are supported in a mounting bracket or housing, so you’ll want to inspect that. Category I EPIRBs should be stowed in an unobstructed location so they can float free when they’re released. Such installations will also have a Hydrostatic Release Unit (HRU) that’s designed to sense water pressure if a vessel sinks and release the mount, 50
allowing the EPIRB to float to the surface. HRUs expire every two years, so note the expiration date. If the EPIRB has a tether or lanyard, it should be in good condition, neatly stowed and attached to the unit. It should not, however, be attached to the mounting bracket or vessel.

COSPAS-SARSAT PROOF OF REGISTRATION EXP DATE: 03/17/2020
NOAA Registration Sticker Verify the presence of a current NOAA registration sticker. EPIRBs and PLBS must be registered with the national authority in the owner’s home country. Federal law requires that all U.S.-coded EPIRBs and PLBs be registered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This registration provides emergency contact information to search-and-rescue organizations, so if your beacon is activated, they’ll know who they’re looking for. It also gives them someone to call and verify that it’s an actual emergency, rather than a false alarm. Knowing that, you need to update any emergency beacon’s registration if any of the information changes or if you buy a used unit. Registration can easily be completed online at sarsat.noaa.gov/ beacon.html.

Hydrostatic release mechanisms, such as on the right side of this Ocean Signal EPRIB, have a twoyear effective life, so pay attention to the date of installation in the field provided.
When activated, some EPIRBs must be deployed and floating in the water for their antenna to operate at maximum efficiency. The manufacturer’s instructions will indicate if the EPIRB should be operating afloat or if it can, for example, be kept inside a life raft. PLBs on the other hand, should be kept clear of the water once they are activated, and they need to be oriented with the antenna pointing toward the sky. Most PLBs do not float, but they typically come with a flotation jacket of some type. Finally, once you activate it, keep your EPIRB or PLB switched on until you are rescued. Never turn off the unit to prolong its battery life. Doing so can reduce the satellites’ ability to determine your position and could prolong rescue efforts.

Olympia is the heart of boating activities in southern Puget Sound. BY DEANE HISLOP
SITUATED IN THE SOUTHERN-MOST TIP of Puget Sound, Washington state’s waterfront capital sits beneath Mt. Rainier and within sight of the majestic Olympic Mountains. Olympia is one of the state’s oldest communities and comes with a cosmopolitan flair, rich in heritage, diversity and culture. With a marina and a landing within walking distance of downtown, plenty of nearby restaurants and shopping opportunities, natural beauty and the friendliness of a small town, Olympia is worth a visit. Budd Inlet splits into two smaller waterways, West Bay and East Bay. They surround the narrow finger of land that comprises Port of Olympia. Moorage is available in both bays. barbecues is upland from the guest slips. Spotless restrooms, showers and laundry facilities, a recycling center and walking trails are conveniently located nearby. Swantown Boatworks, located at the head of the bay and complete with an 82-ton Travelift and a 10,000-pound capacity crane for haulout service and a chandlery, is available for repair work.
TO DO
A free capitol tour — check out the state seal (below right) in the middle of the rotunda floor — is a great way to pass an hour. Farmers market fans will enjoy everything the one in Olympia (below left) has to offer.
History buffs will enjoy a historic selfguided walking tour of downtown, an 1860 house museum, a tour of the state capitol building and antique stores. Other choices include several art galleries, boutiques with one-of-a-kind items, bookstores and a shopping mall. Olympia also hosts several events each year, including a Dragon Boat Festival (April), a Wooden Boat Fair (May), Olympia Harbor Days and Tugboat Races (Labor Day Weekend).
WASHINGTON STATE’S JEWELS
Arlene and I monitored the chartplotter and depthsounder as we carefully guided Easy Goin’ between the navigation aids that showed the way down the dredged channels that narrow from 28 feet wide to 14 feet, avoiding the shoaling in Budd Inlet.
A LITTLE HISTORY The Olympia area was originally occupied by the Coast Salish people, who called it “Cheetwoot” (“the black bear place”). Budd Inlet was a favorite shellfish-gathering site for Nisqually, Duwamish and Squaxin tribes. The area was visited in 1792 by Peter Puget, as part of British Exploration under the command of Capt. George Vancouver. By 1860, Capt. Sam Percival had built the first commercial pier on Puget Sound, Percival Landing, for steamships. Today, Percival Landing is a social hub with pleasureboat moorage, city parks, restaurants and a nearly mile-long boardwalk.
Over in East Bay, John Swan would be proud of the development that has taken place on his former property known as Swan’s Slough. Today Swantown is one of the largest marinas in the state and the center of recreational boating activities in southern Puget Sound.
SWANTOWN MARINA & BOATWORKS Our destination for this visit was Swantown Marina & Boatyard, located in East Bay. Its 700-plus slips (including 70 guest moorage slips) and park-like setting make it nice for visiting boaters and a popular destination for a yacht club rendezvous. A 100-foot-long fuel dock is located on A-Dock just inside the breakwater and has diesel and ethanol-free gas available. The guest moorage is also located on A-Dock, the first slips inside the breakwater, providing visitors 30- and 50-amp power, water and free Wi-Fi. A large grassy area with picnic tables and
Once we were secure in our slip, we made the short walk to Capitol Way South to hop aboard the free Dash Shuttle, which travels up the hill to the state’s capitol building for a tour. Free guided tours of the Washington State Legislative Building are offered hourly seven days a week — between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays, and between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekends — and typically last about 50 minutes. During the tour, we learned about the building’s architecture, the dome and the massive Tiffany chandelier suspended from it. We also heard about the magnificent colored marble from Italy, France and Germany throughout, and visited the legislative wings to hear about the workings of state law. The Washington State Legislative Building, completed in 1928, serves as the state’s center of government and is the centerpiece of five historic buildings on the capitol campus. The building is home to the largest collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany in the world. The state’s grand Tiffany treasure is the chandelier, which features Greco-Roman stylized figures and hangs high above the rotunda suspended by a 3,000-pound chain. The massive

10,000-pound chandelier arrived in pieces by train and was assembled on the rotunda floor before being hoisted into place. Besides housing the largest chandelier ever made by Tiffany, the 287-foot-tall capitol dome is one of the tallest masonry domes in North America.
BACK DOWN BY THE WATER Down the hill we strolled along the Percival Landing boardwalk and docks. A visit to the landing would not be complete without touring the refurbished, 108-yearold tug Sand Man, which hauled everything from oysters to log barges for much of a century. Today, the vessel is operated by The Sand Man Foundation, a non-profit organization. The boat is open to public viewing on the weekend and is free. On our way back to the marina we made a stop at Olympia’s Farmers Market for provisions. With its “when pigs fly” wind vane on the roof and 200 vendors, the market is reportedly one of the largest
Visitors should check out Sand Man, a refurbished 108-year-old tugboat open on the weekend, The Kiss statue on the waterfront and the farmers market.
farmers markets in Washington. The 43-year-old airy market teems with local fruits, vegetables, seafood, meat, bakery items, flowers, crafts, takeout food and entertainment. Our last stop on the way back to Easy Goin’ was at Batdorf & Bronson to sample some handcrafted coffee and watch, through the large windows in the tasting room, beans from Africa, Indonesia and Latin America go through the roasting process. We departed with a half pound of Organic French Roast beans.
FOOD & DRINK STOPS Anyone in need of a refreshment after exploring Olympia should check out The Eastside Club, which is all about beer. More than 40 taps pour the finest brews from the Northwest and beyond, to suit any taste. The pub was the inspiration for Moe’s Tavern on “The Simpsons” TV show. When in port we enjoy letting someone else do the cooking, and the capital city has no shortage of good restaurants and pubs. Bud Bay Café is famous for its view of Percival Landing and sunset dining, boasts a 180-degree bay view and features an extensive selection of seafood and steaks.
Within the walls of the food hall at 222 Market, hungry visitors will find an eclectic array of local offerings from the Peddler Bistro, The Bread Peddler, Chelsea Farms Oyster Bar, Creperie, Dos Hermanos Mexican Kitchen and Sofie’s Scoops. Stopping for a bite at as many establishments as one’s appetite will allow is the way to experience the best of what this modern food hall is serving up. Other can’t-go-wrong options, all within easy walking distance, are Dockside Bistro, Gardner’s Seafood & Pasta and Mercato Ristorante. For breakfast it’s King Solomon’s Reef, a retro diner with booths and a counter. The following morning as we guided Easy Goin’ out of Budd Inlet, we decided that our next visit would include the self-guided walking tour of Olympia’s fivesquare-block historical district and explore the more than a dozen downtown antique stores.

Unlike many other marinas in Washington and southern British Columbia, Maple Bay Marina is not located adjacent to a charming seaside village, but it does feature almost everything a visiting boater requires or needs. The Mariners Market & Espresso Bar is well stocked with dried and canned goods, fresh local produce, meat and frozen foods. Visitors can enjoy the breakfast bar, and the hand-dipped ice cream is a special treat. Also available is local art, pottery, and jewelry, books, greeting cards and nautical coffee mugs, and a lounge area with Wi-Fi. On site is Lindstrom Marine, which offers an excellent assortment of boating supplies, and Doug’s Mechanical and Electric, for any necessary repairs. There’s also a boatyard staffed with certified mechanics. Should one have the need to return home during a cruise, or if guests are coming, Harbour Air, Saltspring Air and Kenmore Air offer daily seaplane service to the marina. The grounds are a park-like setting that visitors can stroll through and appreciate the old, red-painted engines and other maritime artifacts placed around the premises. A picnic pavilion and barbecue area can accommodate boating group functions. Individuals are welcome to use the facility when it is not reserved. The marina is pet friendly and a dog head is located onshore a short distance from the visitor’s dock ramp.

THE SAN DIEGO INTERNATIONAL BOAT Show is back for its 16th run, which means boaters in the market for a new or new-to-them boat know where they need to be at some point during the weekend of June 6–9, 2019. Motoryachts, cruisers, sportfishers, trawlers, sportboats, flybridge yachts, sailboats and more will be on display at Spanish Landing Park East. While the show isn’t taking place over Father’s Day weekend this year, that doesn’t mean it’s not still a family affair. Attendees will gaze upon more than 150 boats, many of them new models from local brokers including Alexander Marine, South Coast Yachts, Stan Miller Yachts, Silver Seas, JK3 and others. In addition, tents on land will feature marine gear and equipment, water toys, fishing gear and more. Spanish Landing Park is adjacent to the Sheraton San Diego Hotel along North Harbor Drive and across the street from the airport. The official show parking lot is on the airport grounds, long-term parking lot 1, which is east of the show on North Harbor Drive. A shuttle runs continuously during the show.
SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY One thing that’s unique about a boat show is the access the public has to yacht brokers. Attendees can walk right up to a broker and start a conversation or ask questions. There’s no appointment necessary. The potentially intimidating aspect of an office visit is removed. The docks, the water seem to be great field-levelers. The atmosphere is definitely more “open house” than “let’s make a deal,” though show prices are typically set lower to encourage people to buy. Dealers have different policies for touring the boats. Some encourage you to walk through the boat and ask any questions when you’re done. Others will take you through the boat — this is especially true for the big yachts, which attract large crowds that need to be managed — which is conducive to asking questions in real time: You see something you want to know more about, ask the question right then. While there is some measure of “captive audience” to the guided tour, more often than not the strategy is to keep the boat from becoming too crowded and diminishing anyone’s positive experience aboard.

Boats, both in the water and on land, dominate the show, but food trucks are nearby to replenish depleted energy reserves.
No matter the method employed by the dealership/brokerage, take advantage of the opportunity to find out as much as you can about the boat. Listen to what the broker is telling you, and ask as many questions as you want. If it’s a new boat, ask about the latest technology aboard; what makes it different/ better than Boat X that you saw over there; why were certain choices made in regard to the engines, the hull design, the electronics, etc.; how does it differ from previous versions of the model; what options were added or can be added. If it’s a brokerage boat, ask about how it was used previously, how complete the maintenance records are, if the broker has similar boats to compare it to, how easy it is to get the boat serviced locally and any number of other things. This is your opportunity, depending on how serious you are, to gather much of the information you need to make an informed decision.
Knowledge Base Show attendees can learn several things about the boats in the show and boat in a larger sense. Here are a few: What’s coming. Boat shows are great opportunities for boat builders and equipment manufacturers to roll out new creations or announce what’s next. Don’t hesitate to ask what’s new. How many and what kinds of boats are in your budget. A boat show allows you to comparison shop live. You can see what a bigger boat with fewer options looks like and costs vs. a smaller boat with more options. What features you must have on your next boat. You have dozens of boats in the same category, so take notes to see who has the best ergonomics and clever features. How well you know your wants and needs. Go to the show with an open mind. Check out boats that are slightly bigger and smaller than the one you think you want. Or, you might find that you prefer dual-console boats instead of center consoles once you get inside and check out the features.
Make it Matter Even folks not planning to buy a boat right away can have a successful boat show if they know how to get the most out of it: Go early. Play hooky from work and go to the first day of the show. Brokers who are swamped on the weekend have more time to chat during the week. Learn where the bottom line really is. Boat show prices are about the lowest possible, and while you may not get that price later in the year, at least you’ll have a ballpark idea of the lowest acceptable price. Take lots of notes and photos. By the end of the day, the distinctions between dozens of boats will start to get fuzzy. A smartphone with video and picture capabilities will save you from carrying two cameras. Talk to other boaters. Ask people looking at the same boats if they’ve seen anything cool. Make contacts. The top brokers in Southern California will be at the show. Get their cards, especially if they represent a brand you might buy. That way, if anything comes up later, you might have a friend in the business.

PITT STOP
Pittsburg is rich in industrial history and is a Delta haven for boaters.
SEA-H
MANY SMALL CITIES DOT THE Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, and Pittsburg is a unique hidden gem that holds many historical parallels to the city that shares its moniker back east. The area was originally named New York Landing, and then in 1911 the name Pittsburg was finally chosen to honor its commonalities with the steel and mining industrial heritage of the Pennsylvania city. In recent years, the downtown area has received a much-needed revival, bringing in new restaurants and businesses that are right on the waterfront waiting to be explored. WHERE TO MOOR
C H OW T I M E
Pittsburg Marina 1 has guest berths at $0.50 per foot with a $10 minimum, and it is known for its reasonable fuel rates. Boaters in the Delta area looking for a short getaway should make a trip east to this working town with homey comforts and conveniences. For boat repairs, Vee Jay Marine 2 has more than 20 years of experience and offers a wide variety of boat services right in the marina.
Just off of the marina is Old Town Pittsburg and its smorgasbord of food for any palate, from Asian appetizers and bubble tea to authentic Mexican food. Many locals flock to New Mecca Café 3 for its bean dip and flour tortilla chips. Authentic Taiwanese cuisine can be found just down the street at Skyview Noodle and Tea 4 . Boaters can dine in or take out piping hot onion pancakes or some

Nomar® Bumpers are a soft-mounted bumper which absorbs impact and allows you to slide in and out of your slip with NO FRICTION, DRAG OR MARRING of your hull. This makes for a safer & less stressful docking experience by allowing everyone to stay on board. Nomar® Bumpers eliminate the need for fenders & are perfect for tight docking situations and narrow slips. They also allow the vessel closer to the dock for easier and safer boarding. satisfy the need for a little adventure. Browns Island is part of the municipality of Pittsburg but has no facilities and cannot be trespassed upon, because it is a protected wildlife area. The California Theatre 12 offers an array of quirky and classic film nights and music festivals, and tribute bands play there regularly. The small town’s main attraction is the
Seafood Festival, which is held every year in the fall — the 2019 festival is September 7 – 8 — and features an air show, powerboat races, music and a showcase of seafood to sample. The festival pays homage to the once-rich fishing industry in Pittsburg, and the proceeds help local nonprofit, civic, church and educational organizations.

ASK A BROKER
BROKERAGE ADVICE
JUNE’S QUESTION:
What do I need to do to prep for a marine survey? ARRANGE TO PRESENT a clean, shipshape
boat, and have all papers and miscellaneous gear ready. If applicable, you will need to make arrangements with the marina to haul the vessel for bottom inspection and retain a captain for sea trials. Lockers and cabin areas should be cleared of all miscellaneous gear. The surveyor should never be asked to prepare a boat for inspection. The surveyor may request minor dismantling of interior ceilings, headliners, flooring, etc., in order to gain access to the suspected areas. Random removal and examination of below-the-waterline fasteners on wood boats may be required. Any dismantling and reinstallation of parts should be performed by qualified personnel and is the responsibility of the person ordering the survey. Written authorization from the owner may be needed to board and/or to remove part of the vessel.
Once you retain the surveyor, he or she works only for you and reports to no one else. The surveyor is there to protect your interests! Source: Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors
Do you have any tips that can help choose a good broker?
For this question, we consulted our feature story from August 2017 called “Sweat the Details.” FINDING THE RIGHT boat broker is crucial
to getting the sale done smoothly. Use our tips to select a broker: • Referrals. Ask fellow boaters and employees at the local marina for recommendations. • Interview. Meet with a few brokers and ask them to provide a list of boats they’ve sold in the past. Give special consideration to brokers who specialize in selling your
brand. They may already have a buyer in the wings. • Satisfied Customers. Ask the broker to provide contact information for his past two sales and get those clients’ feedback. • Contract. California and Florida allow for agreements up to six months, which can be renewed at the end of the term. Be leery of brokers who demand long-term contracts. • Certification. Look for brokers who are members of an association. California and the Pacific Northwest have them: California Yacht Brokers Association and the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association. • Marketing. Ask the broker how he plans to market the boat online and in boating publications. The broker should handle the photo shoot and creating marketing materials. • Communication. Brokers should update their clients at least once a month about potential prospects. • Changing Brokers. Give a broker at least 60 days before evaluating his progress. Remember, a broker has sunk costs in photography and marketing.

* Estimated APR (Annual Percentage Rate) based on 5 year loan term; individual rate may vary based on loan amount, loan term, vehicle use, model year, and type of boat. Subject to consumer loan program requirements and credit approval. Rates and terms may vary with market conditions and are subject to change without notice. Certain fees, closing costs, and restrictions may apply. APR applied to the loan is the APR in effect on the date the application is received and is valid for 30 days. APRs may vary with loan term. Boat must be 1999 model year or newer; for boat model year 1999 to 2008, add .25% to above rate. Maximum loan term based on loan amount. Maximum loan amount is calculated using an advance percentage determined by FICO score and multiplied by NADA base wholesale value with adds; if not listed in NADA, then multiplied by 80% of BUC low retail value. Other rates with different loan terms are available. See our website for rates and terms for financing live-aboards and loan amounts below $25,000. Example of a recreational use boat loan: A $65,000 loan for 5 years with an APR of 4.59% has 60 monthly payments of $1,214.46 each. Member FDIC. Equal Housing Lender.

Legendary.
We don’t need to explain what it means. Legends are larger than life. Bertram falls squarely in the category of legendary. Here is a vessel that blows everything you’ve ever experienced at its size, and everything we’ve ever made, straight out of the water. This is a Bertram in every sense of the word, including the part where it’s like nothing that’s come before it. DISCOVER MORE AT BERTRAM.COM

NAME THE BOAT
THIS MONTH:
READER CONTEST
Despite practicing for months to counter “Tentacles” Tony’s jab-jab-jab and move tactics, Bruno suddenly needed time to ink, er, think. Send us your best name for our boat. If it wins, your name and chosen moniker will appear in the August 2019 issue of Sea, and you’ll win one pair of Costa sunglasses, valued at up to $279.
YOURS FREE! COSTA SUNGLASSES Whether you choose the Spearo style with a matte reef frame and blue mirror lenses (pictured) or one of Costa’s many other styles (costadelmar.com), you’ll have your choice of frame width, frame type and lens color, to create a pair of sunglasses that’s all you.
