OUT IS IN WE ARE SKIPPING ACROSS the Pacific Ocean at

a tad more than 58 mph, running a straight line southeast from Newport Harbor, and in not much time at all we are at Emerald Bay at the very northern tip of Laguna Beach, about four and a half miles from the harbor mouth. Our chariot is a Tiara Sport 38LS (look for a review in Sea soon) powered by triple Yamaha 350s. While a 38-footer might seem like a sizeable boat for outboard power — heck, it has a cabin and a head — it is but a smallish example of what’s going on in the world of outboard power and outboard-powered boats. Three years ago Mercury put its racing technology into the 400R and brought pro power to recreational boating, and just this year Yamaha cranked things up to 425 hp with a new 5.6L V-8 that’s sure to draw interest from the big-boat center-console folks. Six years ago Seven Marine wowed the crowd with a 557 hp behemoth that has since grown to 577 and 627 hp. It’s clear larger vessels have been in outboard manufacturers’ sights. Even manufacturers that aren’t in the horsepower race have been improving corrosion resistance, finding ways to make engines lighter, increasing their charging capabilities, and making 250 and 300 hp outboards more efficient, quieter and generally better at their job. And now outboards integrate with joystick controls. It didn’t take long for 557s and Mercury 400Rs to start appearing on 40- to 45-foot go-fast center consoles from Intrepid, Regulator, Midnight Express and others. Then HydraSports (now HCB Custom) 6

introduced the 53 Sueños in 2015: a 53-foot center console propelled by outboards. I’ve seen multiple Yamaha and Seven Marine engines hanging off the transom. With quad Seven Marine 627s, it can reach 69 mph. Yeah, center consoles and outboards aren’t for everyone but, holy crap, who wouldn’t want to feel that power one time? Well, Sueños’ reign as the largest center console lasted three years, and it was taken down by a stable mate. This year, HCB launched the 65 Estrella. It’s a 65-foot center console, but that’s not the biggest part of the story. Estrella (read more about it next month in West Coast Focus) is powered by outboards: five of the 627s on hull #1. My smartphone’s calculator tells me that is a total of 3,135 hp. I haven’t seen a top speed for Estrella yet, but on a 65-footer it’s less about blazing top speed than it is about consistently reliable power. Scout Boats and Boston Whaler have 42-footers. Everglades has a 43-footer. Grady-White has a 46-footer. All are powered with outboards — multiple outboards. Why do I bring this up? Outboards aren’t going to replace inboards or sterndrives, but their use on larger vessels is a notable trend that isn’t limited to a small segment of the boatbuilding world anymore. Heck, the Estrella might be a center console but it has eight feet of headroom belowdecks and can sleep five people. Outboards are in.

IF A YACHT HAS a full-beam VIP stateroom with marble vanity tops, his-and-hers heads and a walkthrough shower, then what must the master be like? Well, on the Johnson 93, the master is forward on the main deck and affords 270-degree views through windows that wrap around three sides. Electric curtains ensure owners can retain their privacy quickly when called for. A desk/vanity and a lounge settee are to port, and the en suite head is forward and down five steps — a hidden, luxurious space. Two more staterooms occupy the belowdecks space on the 93-footer, each en suite and with its own enter-

tainment system, but owners have wide latitude for the accommodations, anywhere from three to six staterooms. A veritable teak beach of a swim platform welcomes visitors aboard, and its aft section is a hydraulic platform that facilitates swimming and tender launch and retrieval. Up port and starboard stairs from there is a cockpit with a six-person C-shaped transom settee and a dining table. Through stainless-framed glass doors is a salon that benefits from large and numerous port and starboard windows. A formal dining area is forward of the salon, and a galley is

tucked into the portside forward, though owners can move the master belowdecks and put a country kitchen forward. Up a level is the skylounge deck, which includes indoor and outdoor space. Inside is a twin-seat helm, an L-shaped settee and a love seat that share a table, a wet bar with stools, and a day head. Aft are twin outdoor settees and smaller tables. One more level up is the flybridge, which features another helm station, another wet bar with stools, an alfresco galley and a sixto eight-person settee with a big table. Aft is plenty of open space for chairs and/or chaise lounges. The bridge is covered by a hardtop and features a half-height windshield but is open to the breeze. The big yacht is powered by twin Caterpillar C32 diesels, each of which cranks out 1,925 hp. Top speed is 24 knots and a comfortable cruise speed is 21. Going Swimmingly

Benetti has launched two Mediterraneo 116 hulls in less than a year, marking a solid beginning for the model. Its 3,000-mile range at 10 knots is a draw, but so are the social spaces where people can pass the time underway. One space sure to be popular is the bow cockpit, which looks and feels like a beach club that cozies up to a pool. Yep, a pool. benettiyachts.it

Wheel o’ Where? WHAT DO YOU CALL a boat without a steering wheel? A canoe? A kayak? A dinghy? Correct on all counts. But what if the boat in question is 58 feet long and has three staterooms? In that case the builder obviously forgot the wheel, right? Wrong. Schaefer Yachts and Volvo Penta teamed up to develop a joystick-only steering system and then incorporated it aboard a Schaefer 580, which debuted at the 2018 Rio Boat Show — Schaefer is a Brazilian builder — and is powered by twin Volvo Penta IPS800 diesels. Throttles still control boat speed, but the joystick handles all of the steering. schaeferyachts.us

GOLD COAST WINTER CRUISING Beautiful and pristine anchorages await on this itinerary.

November 1–20

If you’re coming down the outside of Baja, jump across from Cabo San Lucas (about 300 n.m., avoid Tres Marias) to the welcome arms of Banderas Bay, where four full-service marinas await at La Cruz, Nuevo Vallarta and Puerto Vallarta. Banderas Bay’s north shore has all the marinas, two fuel docks, two boatyards and Puerto Vallarta’s international airport, for guests. Plan to provision in Puerto Vallarta’s many excellent supermarkets and big municipal market stalls. Walk shady pedestrian paths on Isla Rio Cuale and enjoy street performers, fun art and interesting eateries.

Nov. 20–30 MEXICO’S GOLD COAST IS a series of nine beautiful boat-

ing destinations and pristine anchorages strung like jewels on a golden crown. Together they provide several months’ worth of winter cruising pleasure. Here’s one winter cruising itinerary for Mexico’s Gold Coast, a three-month itinerary (November, December, January) designed for boaters who want to escape the north’s cold while soaking up the very best of Mexico’s tropic splendor.

Save 10 days for Banderas Bay getaways. Scuba or snorkel or just see the sights at Tres Mariettas Marine Park near Punta Mita. Sample tequila and raicilla at a 300-year-old distillery in the quaint mountain village of San Sebastian del Oeste, 90 minutes on winding roads by tour bus. Visit four free village anchorages — Mismaloya, Tomatlan, Las Animas, Quimixto — along the south shore of Banderas Bay and the hippie jungle outpost of Yelapa.

Dec. 1–15

Round Cabo Corrientes overnight when winds are lightest and spend a week in each of the following. At Chamela, the main overnight anchorage lies in the north end of the bay off the vacation village of Perula, but tiny pristine toeholds are tucked among a dozen small jungle-clad islands (only nine of which are named) scattered along Chamela’s southeast shore, also ideal for snorkeling

and bird-watching from dinghies, kayaks and SUPs. My favorite is Isla Pajarera, the Bird Cage. At Careyes, million-dollar bungalows of chartreuse and neon pink cling to the cliffs above three tiny turquoise coves. Ask about a day pass at posh El Carey Hotel to use its spa and pools that overlook the anchorage. A polo field and heliport are nearby. Save Careyes for flat sea conditions, because the anchorage is tiny and can be susceptible to surges, or try Bahia Careyes a bit farther south where the turtle nests are protected. Tenacatita is famous for the Jungle River Dinghy Expedition, a self-guided dinghy cruise (fun for two or three dinghies) composed of shady tunnels of mangrove tendrils, hidden loops for squirt-gun ambushes and sunny ponds. You’ll see jungle flowers, iguanas, butterflies, king fishers and crocs — don’t bring pets. Land the dinghies on the sandy back side of Playa Tenacatita for a potluck lunch, then return through the estuary to the commodious main anchorage before sunset.

Dec. 15–31

Barra de Navidad is the place for Christmas.

Book a slip early at Marina Puerto Isla Navidad for primo service, including a fuel dock. The French baker — he really is — will deliver fresh croissants and other delights, by panga, to your swim step every morning. The Grand Isla Navidad resort’s stunning colonial architecture frames the marina, whose guests get access to the hotel’s restaurants, golf courses, boutique shops, pools, concierge desk and shuttle service to nearby Manzanillo airport. Across the front lagoon, the funky surfer village of Barra de Navidad has water taxis to pick you up at your slip and whisk you to a choice of inexpensive waterfront eateries with dinghy-up steps. Water taxis also serve the free anchorage in the back lagoon. Join the traditional Christmas and New Year street festivities (e.g., church processions, food tables, fireworks) at Melaque, San Patricio and Barra, then join or watch a lighted boat parade through both lagoons.

Jan. 1–15

Celebrate Ano Nuevo 2019 just 30 miles south in Manzanillo Bay’s mini cruising ground: nine free anchorages and the historic Marina Las Hadas, where boats

Med-moor in a circular harbor. This hotel’s architecture is a dazzling white fairy-tale castle. Book early for the holidays, which end January 12 when the wise men arrive and gifts are opened. Manzanillo’s two best free anchorages are Playa La Boquita and Playa Santiago (fun beach eateries), but for a small fee try Playa Las Hadas, which includes dinghy access into the marina docks and some resort amenities. La Audiencia cove has excellent snorkeling. Downtown, anchor off Fishermen’s Wharf to stroll west half a mile to the Sail Fish Plaza, which honors this region’s pledge to catch and release.

Jan.15–31

En route to Ixtapa (185 miles), Cabeza Negra and Caleta de Campos are merely stepping-stone rest stops in fair weather. Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo are the diamond-studded destinations. These non-identical twins lie only 10 miles apart and are both attractive to boaters for their different characteristics. The only slips are inside Marina Ixtapa, a narrow yacht basin — full service, fuel dock, boatyard — tucked behind lines of sparkling 20-story hotel towers. On the other hand, Zihuatanejo’s steep little bay has three beachy little anchorages that front a small historic town and nice La Ropa homes on the east side. Ixtapa has jazzy nightlife and boogies till dawn, which is when Zihua’s pangueros are heading out to fish. The contrasts are delightful, and an hourly tourist bus links both locales. I’d spend one week in the marina and the other on the hook in Z-Wha Bay.

SUMMER CONSTRAINTS

Zihuatanejo is a good U-turn point for heading back north into the lower Sea of Cortez for the rest of the winter and spring cruising season. Lay a course to spend more time at some favorite spots, perhaps flying down a different set of guests or crew. The big time constraint is hurricane season, which officially begins June 1. Before the first summer cyclonic storms start roaming up from the Gulf of Tehuantepec, you want to be safely positioned within quick reach of a hurricane hole: Barra, PV, La Paz, Puerto Escondido.

THE EXPERTS

Inflatable life jackets give anglers and others freedom of movement and peace of mind, but be sure the ones on your boat are ready for action.

The best place to find specific maintenance requirements is the owner’s manual; however, some things apply to the ongoing reliability of any inflatable life jacket.

MAINTAIN INFLATABLE LIFE JACKETS

Make sure your boat’s lifesavers are ready to spring into action. BY CAPT. FRANK LANIER

DONNING THAT INFLATABLE LIFE jacket every time you head out on the water, or at least having one or more close at hand, may give you a warm and fuzzy feeling, but when’s the last time you actually inspected it? Sure, it looks OK, but how do you know it will actually work if and when the time comes? Unknown bladder leaks, improperly installed CO2 cylinders, fabric degradation — they’re just some of the issues that can render an inflatable life jacket useless.

Prior to each voyage, be sure to do the following: • Inspect the unit for visible signs of wear or damage. Verify it is free of rips, holes, damaged hardware, etc. Tug on the seams to ensure they are securely sewn and show no thread damage. • If the unit has a service indicator, check it to ensure it’s green. Red indicates the mechanism has been fired or is incorrectly installed. • For auto-inflating life jackets, verify that all components are armed and not expired. Open the jacket and inspect both the automatic inflation system and oral inflation tube. Verify the CO2 cylinder is firmly secured and free from damage or corrosion. • Repack the lifejacket per manufacturer’s instructions, making sure the manual activation pull-tab lanyard is accessible and properly positioned for quick access and use. If operation of the lifejacket is in doubt, or if you just haven’t checked it in a while, try these procedures: • Inflate the bladder using the oral tube and leave it overnight in a room with a constant temperature. If the bladder loses pressure, take the life jacket to an authorized service center for further tests and repair. Don’t attempt to make repairs

18  SEAMAGAZINE.COM  NOVEMBER 2018

+ Sea Experts new3.indd 18

9/28/18 10:10 AM

ASK THE EXPERTS yourself. If there is no noticeable loss of pressure, deflate the life jacket by turning the cap of the oral inflation tube upside down and pressing it into the inflation tube. Then gently squeeze the life jacket (without twisting or wringing) until all of the air has been expelled. • Repack the life jacket according to the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring the

manual activation pull-tab inflation lanyard is accessible and properly positioned. As I indicated earlier, always follow manufacturer recommendations; with that in mind here are a few other good ideas: • When not in use, store life jackets in a dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight.

See video of Clean Way in action at cleanwayfuelfill.com

• Rinse life jackets with fresh water after saltwater exposure and allow them to dry thoroughly prior to storage. If your life jacket has an auto-inflate feature, remove the auto-inflation cartridge prior to rinsing. • Always read the instruction manual for proper care and maintenance of the life jacket.

BOAT OWNERS WHO LIVE in the northern latitudes rely on antifreeze to protect their boat’s engines, generators with closed cooling systems, hydronic heating systems, and onboard sanitation and potable water systems. As widely used as antifreeze is, it is one of the least understood tools we use, mainly because the widely accepted standard used to establish its rating can be misleading. Antifreeze used in an engine’s coolant system serves many purposes. The most important is keeping the water in an engine from freezing during periods of cold temperatures. It also keeps that same water from boiling during the summer, by elevating the boiling point of the fluid to as high as 275 degrees. Systems are normally filled with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. The third function of antifreeze or coolant is lubrication; it lubricates the moving parts it comes in contact with, such as the water pump. Antifreeze generally comes in two types: ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. Ethylene glycol is recommended by many engine manufacturers for use in closed cooling systems, but it’s quite toxic, so boat owners need to take precautions and dispose of it carefully. It has a yellow-green color and tastes sweet, making it attractive to children and pets if it is stored improperly or spilled on the ground. it still should be thoroughly flushed from potable water systems before people drink from the system. Common ready-to-use antifreeze for potable water systems is propylene glycol antifreeze, and it is rated to provide protection to minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit, which is adequate for most of the lower 48 states. It is actually an antifreeze solution that contains about 30 percent propylene glycol. The balance of the solution is mainly water with additives to lubricate pumps and seals, a corrosion inhibitor to protect metal parts and an algae inhibitor. Many skippers assume the rating means that minus 50 degrees antifreeze will remain in a liquid state until its temperature reaches 50 below zero, but that is incorrect. The slush point, where ice crystals begin to form in the solution, is around 12 degrees, which is more than 60 degrees above its nominal rating. At that point damage is not imminent, but as the temperature of the solution drops, more dense crystals begin to form and expand and exert increasing pressure on the wall of the pipe, water channel or container until it reaches it burst point. The standard rating system states the antifreeze will not cause a copper pipe to burst until it reaches that temperature. It’s important to recognize that the rating indicates the temperature at which the product can fail to protect. Unfortunately, that same solution, when used to protect a system with PVC pipe or fittings, can cause the plastic to burst at minus 10 degrees. A plastic reservoir would fail even sooner. So if it’s possible that the extreme low temperature in your area could go lower than the bursting point of any part of your boat’s water system, the smart play is to use an antifreeze rated for much colder temps. A pure, or ready-to-use, undiluted antifreeze solution that is rated at minus 100 degrees is about 60 percent propylene glycol. Its slush point is around minus 60 degrees and should protect PVC and similar materials down to about minus 80 degrees. The more concentrated product will be more expensive, but compare it to the cost of repairing extensive damage in the event of a severe cold snap. Here’s a better way to determine what level of protection you should use: Ignore

the burst rating and match the slush point of the antifreeze to the lowest temperatures that may be encountered. Doing so provides a margin for error and will help to ensure that the antifreeze solution will never get beyond the initial crystallization stage; hence, no potentially damaging pressures will be created. The slush or freezing point may not be prominently marked on

the product label, but most manufacturers publish charts that show both the burst and slush points of their products. A highly accurate instrument for testing the point at which a propylene glycol–based solution begins to solidify is a refractometer. It eliminates the guesswork, reassuring you that your systems are protected to the desired level.

+ Sea Trial Targa.indd 24

TARGA 35

Built for the rigors of northern European waters and with an eye toward comfort and style, this Finnish vessel is sturdy and practical. BOATS REFLECT THEIR OW NER, but they also reveal something about their builder. How, where and for what purpose a boat is built help demonstrate why it is configured in a certain way. The Targa 35 is built in Finland in a small town that lies at nearly 63 degrees north latitude, just shy of the latitude of Fairbanks, Alaska. To get to the same latitude as the Targa factory outside of Malax, Finland, someone in Seattle would need to trek north a further 851 miles. For perspective, the distance from Los Angeles to Seattle is 813 nautical miles. While Targa has built commercial, military and fishing vessels, it specializes in high-end recreational boats. Will these boats built for a remote and rugged region of Northern Europe meet the needs of boaters here in America? Matt Hardin and Brian Anderson from Cardinal Yacht Sales were looking for a sturdy and practical boat line that had the fit and finish to satisfy not just fishermen but cruisers too, and just as importantly their spouse and family. Affiliated with Northwest Diesel Power and an authorized service center for brands such as Coastal Craft, Cardinal specializes in servicing boats. Whatever vessel the crew was going to sell had to be built to high quality standards and needed to be easily serviced, since they would be handling the work themselves. Hardin traveled to Helsinki and beyond to better understand the brand and was impressed enough when he returned last year that Cardinal decided to take on the Targa line.

As we walked down the docks toward the boat, I thought of Finland and pictured rugged boats cruising vast fjords with mountains rising high above the icy waterways. The Targa 35 fits the bill. It has a solid, purposeful look with a forward-sloped windshield, deep gunwales and a large cockpit surrounded by teak-covered rails. Molded-in steps lead up to a flybridge with open-air seating aft and a helm station and companion seat protected by a Venturi windshield. A stainless radar arch is complemented by a flag mast that rises from the deck below to create a distinctive ship-like appearance. Teak decking starts in the cockpit and continues through deep, protected walkaround sidedecks

Fore and aft are areas that double as social zones and fishing spots. The operator — at a compact but complete helm — has access to the sidedeck via a door, while a galley and dinette occupy the rest of the main cabin.

an electric stovetop. Below, drawers hold silverware, plates, mugs, glasses and even a row of six shot glasses, all of which fit neatly in custom compartments. The refrigerator is under the helm seat and a convection/ microwave oven is in the adjacent salon. This doesn’t seem like an ideal galley layout to me, but the arrangement can be changed to suit an owner’s needs. Inside, steering is to starboard, and within easy reach behind the helm seat is a counter along the window that has flip-up plugs and USB ports for charging. A hatch in the middle of the dash leads to a belowdecks forward cabin that includes a V-berth

that lead forward to sliding doors on both sides for cabin access. Ahead of the cabin, seats with storage beneath them wrap completely around the inside of the bow to form a large congregating area. Unique to this type of boat, this area can easily seat eight people, all with backrests and in conversation range. This is a great gathering spot and can just as easily be used for fishing. Another Targa at the dock was rigged with four downriggers, two in the cockpit and two forward in the bow area. Inside the cabin fine-grained teak and top-quality joiner work are evident throughout. The dash has hinged compartments for storing navigation essentials such as binoculars and handheld VHFs. An additional storage bin for charts and larger items lowers from the ceiling. Each Targa is customized for the owner, and on this vessel the port side of the dash conceals a galley with a stainless steel sink and

On the flybridge, a companion seat sits to port of the helm. With an optional belowdecks floor plan, the bow loses its seating. A glass bulkhead and door are available in versions with and without a flybridge.

Before departing we head to the cockpit for a quick look at the engine room. Large hatches provide easy access to the twin Volvo Penta D6 330s that push sterndrives. On the bottom of the hatches, canvas pouches hold deck chairs and a teak table that can be set up in the cockpit or the forward seating area. There is ample space to get to both sides of the Volvos, and systems such as water pumps and fuel separators are mounted precisely along the bulkhead. Battery switches are lined up and labeled, and meticulous wiring leads to them and the charger. A spare bronze duoprop is mounted neatly in one corner. A stainless steel bin holds a container connected to a manual sump pump that clears the engine bilges to prevent any possibility of pollution. Details like these demonstrate why a dealer focused on service chose this manufacturer. The engine room shows the care and quality that go into building these boats. The hull is solid fiberglass and is

supported further by a grid-bonded foamfilled glass stringer system. Conditions in the far northern reaches of Europe can be severe, and these boats are built to handle extreme weather. Out on Bellingham Bay on an overcast 55-degree day, the seas were calm. During reciprocal runs, to account for any tide or current, the Targa 35 averaged 37 knots at wide-open throttle with very little tabs. Range at that speed is 309 miles. Between 21 and 29 knots, the 35’s performance remained constant, with a fuel burn of 1.24 mpg. A fast cruise of 26 knots, 2850 rpm, burned 21 gph and yielded a range of 368 miles. Below 2000 rpm, the turbos hadn’t fully kicked in and the boat cruised at displacement speeds. It powered out of the hole easily and leveled off as it accelerated. With no real waves available, we decided to do figure-8s to catch our own wake. I can’t say this method is a particularly effective test of sea kindliness but it sure is fun. At 30 knots we made concise circles in both directions with no perceptible cavitation. We performed tight turns of three to five boat lengths while the 35 leaned cleanly into the turns and bounced over its own wake like it was nothing. The helm is well laid out with instruments and a chartplotter on both the dash and an overhead panel. This Targa 35 is equipped with a joystick and I wanted to try it, so as a light rain fell we headed back. I have used

IPS joysticks that look the same as this one but had not tried one on a sterndrive application. Anderson explained that the bow thruster is not connected to the joystick as I eased past a Targa 30 to dock in front of it. Kicking the throttles back to neutral, I played with the joystick a bit before pushing the handle sideways. The stern began to creep in immediately and a few taps of the thruster eased the bow dockward, and the boat moved slowly sideways to the dock. I felt like I had cheated but it was comforting to know that anyone can dock this boat even if he lacks boat handling experience. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  NOVEMBER 2018  27

BENETEAU

The GT 50 has a playful way of combining the inside with the outside.

GRAN TURISMO 50 SPORTFLY New from the hull up, this classy express cruiser is a boat for all seasons and all destinations.

BENETEAU’S GR AN TURISMO LINE debuted several years ago and found a lucrative market. But as with all successful products, it was important to keep up with changing tastes and technology while capitalizing on a good concept. So when the builder started to revamp the line, I thought we’d see the same thing but with slightly different amenities and décor choices. Not so. As the GT 40 replaced the 38, so the Beneteau Gran Turismo 50 replaces the 49, and I’m pleased to report that the French builder started fresh, from the aerated hull all the way up to the flybridge. The new Beneteau GT 50 comes as a coupe or a flybridge, or Sportfly in company parlance. The former is more popular on the East Coast, where people tend to escape temperature extremes, while the latter lets West Coasters take advantage of a longer boating season. Our

Tester’s Opinion

test boat in Southern California was the Sportfly, the first in these waters. The GT 50 is technically an express cruiser but it really does double duty as an enclosed motoryacht with a flybridge. It has benefited from Nuvolari & Lenard’s stylish rounded lines and is all about open living just as before, but now it’s a bit more seamless. A deep hydraulic swim platform (3 feet, 8 inches) is the way to board both from the dock and the water. This expanded teak beach submerges below the waterline to form a playground and to help load and carry a tender that sits either outside on popup chocks or stows in the dinghy garage above the engine room. An optional winch is tucked up in the starboard corner to help pull in the spec’d Williams 270 jet tender (a 9-foot dinghy

Bow, stern and flybridge social zones make dayboating and coastal cruising aboard the Beneteau GT 50 a large-group affair.

Overall, there’s very little not to like about the new GT 50. It’s clear that a lot of thought went into the next iteration of the wildly popular GT 49, and the new model isn’t just a do-over with a few color changes.

with an outboard may be accommodated). When the dinghy garage door is closed, a module containing a sink, a Kenyon grill and a prep surface protrudes from the transom at waist level and within conversation distance of the cockpit. The chef stands on the swim platform while cooking. That’s a great use of space and keeps the heat and smoke out of the cockpit. And speaking of the cockpit, it has morphed into a nice continuation of the salon, as the port settee flows aft and then curves to form a transom seat that is tucked behind a folding table. To starboard is a module with a sink and an optional ice-maker under the steps that lead up to the flybridge. Stepping up to the Sportfly, I found the helm to starboard and across from a companion seat that converts to a large sunpad. Seating for four is around a cocktail

table aft. South Coast Yachts added a very functional soft top with lots of stainless steel handholds that help steady the crew in a seaway. Visibility forward from the single helm seat is excellent, giving the driver a view down over the large sunpad — with moving backrests — onto the bow and all the way to an anchor locker that holds a Lewmar windlass. The helm station dash holds a 12-inch multifunction display, a joystick and bow thruster control, an engine screen and a remote VHF. Up here the display would benefit from a backup camera, since the seating area obscures the sightlines aft, but this may not be necessary thanks to the main helm. Keep reading. The GT 50 has a playful way of combining the inside with the outside. Just slide the glass salon doors to starboard and then insert an armrest to connect the interior and exterior settees that run along the port side. Not only does this make the seating seamless, it also provides two built-in cupholders, so no table is needed. The interior section of the settee has a foldout table with stitched leather sections. A straight settee to starboard rests just aft of the double helm seat. The steering wheel is on the centerline of the helm pod, which is the only way to describe it. It’s almost like a module right off a large PWC. To starboard is a small opening window that SEAMAGAZINE.COM  NOVEMBER 2018  29

Inside and outside are seamlessly tied when the aft door is open. The helm pod supplies the captain with everything important. Two or three (optional) staterooms are belowdecks.

lets air in and helps with communications on deck. To port are two cupholders and a large cubby for cellphones, eyeglasses, pens and the detritus that helm stations accumulate. A single 12-inch Simrad NSS multifunction display sits just above the wheel, but buyers can upgrade to a larger screen. Two rows of rocker switches and AC vents are on either side of the screen. The top of the pod is covered with stitched leather, a feature that helps cut down the glare from the windshield. Beneteau’s Ship Control digital switching system is behind a Lexan panel, at knee level, by the helm. This Scheiber system controls many of the onboard systems, including AC, pumps and lighting. What seems odd at first is that the engine throttles and the joystick are inboard and to the left of the wheel. But don’t lose faith, right-handers, because the joystick is actually in a great place for backing into a slip. Tight maneuvering during backing is usually when the joystick comes in handy, and with this layout the operator can stand in the middle of the boat with one hand on the joystick and look aft through the glass doors and have a good view of exactly where the boat is going. Driving from down here doesn’t call for a backup camera. The GT 50 is available with two or three cabins and two heads. The master is full beam and amidships and has 6 feet, 3 inches of headroom around the island bed. The mattress is on gas shocks, so it can be lifted easily to access the engine and AC water inlet through-hulls. (More on this later.) Long lounges run along either side — perfect perches on which to relax with a book and enjoy the breeze from the opening ports that are set into long hull windows. To port is an en suite head with an elegant vessel sink and a sizeable separate shower stall. The VIP cabin in the bow was my favorite, truthfully, due to the amount of natural light. Large hull windows and opening ports are at eye level for anyone in bed, and air funnels in via the hatch above. The bow sunpad is cut out around the hatch, so people can lounge above

and below simultaneously even when the hatch is open. The bed can be split when the outer edges of the island are lifted up and out to form two berths if the cabin is occupied by people who aren’t a couple. A door leads into and through the shower compartment to the head, but there is another door by the sink, since this also doubles as the day head. Grooves in the headliner show that a third cabin may be added, and that’s how our test boat was laid out. Without the cabin, an L-shaped settee forms companion seating for the chef in the galley, but with the cabin in place, large families may be accommodated easily. The three-cabin layout also provides a great place to stow luggage or supplies and will help with resale value. An L-shaped galley is to port. It’s compact but well equipped with refrigeration drawers, twin sinks and what Beneteau calls the Magic Corner: a clever rack system that slides out and over when the undercounter cupboard is opened. It’s a great way to maximize stowage capacity even in hard-to-reach corners. A lot of boat owners aren’t fans of a galley-down arrangement. However, since there’s a sink, an ice-maker and a grill in or near the aft cockpit, this

Inside, the salon is roomy and well-lit, and the operator can be part of the conversation. Docking is easy thanks to a Volvo Penta joystick.

layout shouldn’t be too off-putting when it’s time to serve sundowners. As usual, San Diego Bay was flat on test day, though we found a 12-knot breeze rounding Point Loma. The dealer had a photo shoot planned for the day, so the boat had eight people aboard but it never felt crowded, even as everyone moved around to set up nice shots for the circling drone. Barrett Canfield and Tamara Krimstock of South Coast Yachts were on hand to answer questions. The GT 50 rides on an AirStep2 hull that introduces air from vents along the hullsides and funnels it beneath the boat. The resulting air cushion reduces friction in the aft third of the hull as the air is channeled back and out the transom, providing a bit of lift and increasing fuel efficiency. (Due to all this aeration, the raw-water intakes are farther forward and therefore accessible under the master berth, as mentioned earlier.) Like all pod-driven boats, the GT 50 makes wide, arcing turns at speed. It leans inward about 10 degrees and then gracefully comes about. From a full stop, the boat came up on plane in 7.9 seconds with the wind and 9.3 seconds running into it. It planed at 15 to 16 knots and 2500 rpm. We found a top speed of 23.1 knots at 3450 rpm, where the Volvo Penta diesels burned almost 44 gph. An economical cruise would be around 18 to 20 knots where the engines burn a combined 36 gph. At this speed, the GT 50 has about a 200-mile range with a 10 percent reserve. The only propulsion package for the GT 50 is twin Volvo Penta 435 hp diesels with pods. Joystick control is available at the main helm, the fly helm and in a well on the starboard side of the cockpit. The engine room is accessed via a ladder when a section of the portside cockpit seating is raised. It’s a tight engine room but has decent access to all systems. I could get around the twin diesels and even squeeze between them. Front and center is an 11 kw Onan genset and the pods are tucked all the

way aft. Headroom is tight due to the dinghy garage that is shoehorned in above. I had no issues moving around while crouched and I could sit comfortably, but I’m 5 feet, 5 inches tall, and larger folks may not love this. However, a very handy access hatch in the cockpit sole allows for quick checks of vital engine fluids without ever having to set foot in the engine room. Andreani Design has worked with Beneteau’s Monte Carlo and Gran Turismo lines for several years, and the aesthetic is all about clean surfaces, hidden functionality and luxury touches that elevate the finish. Indirect lighting, leather accents and designer materials combine for eye-catching style. Our boat had walnut Alpi wood, dark brown leather accents and cream interior Sunbrella that worked well to create a soft and elegant style. Base price for the GT 50 is less than $845,000. Groupe Beneteau provides packages in trim levels (Essential and Lounge) and packs, which include electronics, seating options, décor and system upgrades. This is a simplified approach and is easier to understand. This fully loaded coastal cruiser with joystick control, good fuel economy and a luxe finish is a bit of a bargain at just under $1.2 million as tested. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  NOVEMBER 2018  31

Three months, 3,000 miles, 1,024 gallons of diesel, and totally worth it. That’s the pull of Glacier Bay’s mountains and namesake formations.

Tribute (above) and its crew enjoyed all that Glacier Bay has to offer, including Margerie Glacier (below).

AHEAD OF Tribute, about a mile and a half away, a humpback whale breaches. Almost its entire body comes clear of the water at a steep angle before it comes down on its side and raises a spectacular splash. Yelps and shouts of excitement fill the pilothouse. Then, a second whale comes right out of the water and reveals its total length and color. It is followed immediately by another whale that breaches into the air and crashes lengthwise into the water. In the silence that follows, Laurie and I are stunned and quieted by what we just saw, because it is a wholly spiritual moment. The event is so engrossing and sudden that no one takes a single photo. The whales are temporarily gone. To our starboard, a Coast Guard cutter is coming down the bay and we are going to cross its bow. We have a quick radio conversation with its crew to tell them about the whales and our obligation to follow the vessel operating rules in this preserve. We make a 90-degree turn to the south and the Coast Guard cutter crew informs us they will slow and follow Tribute into Bartlett Cove, since that is their destination too. It’s an incredible close to our time in Glacier Bay. The next morning we will leave the bay and begin a three-day trip to Sitka. Our 30-mile trip to Glacier Bay National Park starts at 0600 hours: cloudy skies, calm winds, flat water and 61 degrees. Hoonah is quiet, still asleep, streets empty as Tribute glides the length of the town. After we clear Hoonah Island and turn northwest, we spot the Fairweather Mountain Range, whose peaks vary from 12,000 to 15,000 feet, looming in the distance, firmly within the national park. The dramatic elevation changes and the jagged, snow-covered peaks are the first of many “Wow!” moments the park will create. We time our departure to take advantage of the currents and the predicted winds. Tribute, our Kadey-Krogen 39 trawler, is moving at 8 to 8.5 knots as the sun rises, warms the morning and clears the skies, and we spot our first humpback of the day. Just outside the park boundary, we spy sea otters diving for food, lounging on their back to eat or rest. Hunted to near extinction, they were reintroduced in the 1990s and now there are 9,000 in the park where they are, according to the Park Service, “dramatically changing the underwater world of the park” due to their voracious appetite for crab and shellfish. Following instructions, after we cross the imaginary line into the park, we use the VHF radio to announce Tribute’s presence. We receive permission to enter, and after we arrive at Bartlett Cove we tie to the National Park Service dock and sign in at the Visitor Information Station. With more than an hour to wait for the boater orientation program, we walk to the lodge, look for goodies in the gift shop and check out the huge skeleton of a humpback whale that was killed by a cruise ship in 2001. The briefing consists of a 20-minute video about why the rules are necessary and a ranger’s presentation regarding the areas that are currently closed or limited. We are here for peak feeding season for humpback whales in the park; they gorge for five months before they swim to Hawaii, where they do not eat. Unlike other whales that have a kind of sonar to locate boats and other animals, humpbacks use their hearing. Therefore, boats should not change course or speed to avoid them; the whales will hear and evade. Two hours later, Tribute and Shipperly — our Cutwater 28 buddy boat owned by Ken and Pauline Phillips — are heading deeper into the bay. The currents in Glacier Bay are SEAMAGAZINE.COM  NOVEMBER 2018  33

substantial because there is only one outlet for this huge body of water. Glacier Bay has two main arms, and immense mountains with jagged peaks and wide valleys carved by glaciers ring the bay. The flooding current propels Tribute to 13.2 knots for several miles, which is a new speed record for this Kadey-Krogen trawler. Past Willoughby Island, a humpback surfaces just 50 yards away from Tribute’s port side. A massive back, the whoosh of a blowhole, and the whale is gone, descending into the 900-foot-deep bay. South Marble Island attracts us because boaters cannot get closer than 100 yards. What is being protected? Answer: the endangered Steller sea lion. Lots of them.

The 2,000-pound males are strutting on the smooth rock against a backdrop of eye-popping mountains and under clear blue skies. On North Marble Island, Laurie regains her love for the tufted puffin that started here in 1983, when she saw two of their distinctive orange beaks. Our destination, however, is Blue Mouse Cove, the most popular anchorage in the park. It is empty. We anchor in 45 feet of water after traveling 64 miles. Shipperly rafts to Tribute and we enjoy docktails with Ken and Pauline as a fresh breeze causes moderate ripples that will disappear when the sun goes down — at 2230 hours. We awake to a humpback whale in

the cove, sedately swimming, diving and rising to whoosh its exhale. We stand on the foredeck, enraptured and whispering as the whale captures our attention for 45 minutes. We have breakfast with a humpback under high clouds, still air and 63-degree air. Immersed in this wilderness, we realize the differences between it and our accustomed universe. With no cars, no floatplanes, no broadcast media and no reminders of humanity, the mountains, the water, the colors and the moving dynamics of weather capture our attention. Devoid of the addiction and speed of information, and its resulting emotional rollercoaster, the pace of life is slower and calmer, less

about ambition and desires and more about the massive and complex world outside of our control. A world that has been in the background is now front and center. Tribute and Shipperly leave the anchorage and head up the west arm and are met by 25-knot winds on the bow, winds channeled and intensified by the steep mountains on each side. At Queen Inlet, the winds drop and the water lies down. Reid Glacier — receding while the John Hopkins Glacier advances — comes into view. Glaciers are like a snow and ice account. When more snow is deposited and compressed than melts, the glacier grows, and when more ice is melted than created, it recedes. Of the more than 1,000 glaciers in this national park, most are receding and have been for more than 200 years. The changing glaciers are perhaps one of the reasons for this pristine wilderness in the 21st century. There is no history of homesteads, farming, towns or canneries because of the glaciers. Today, the glaciers are revealing the valleys that have been in their belly, land sculpting in progress. The upper portion of John Hopkins Inlet is closed to cruise ships but they will come right up to the

boundary for a look. Kayakers are at the first glacier, dome tents pitched on an outcropping, high sheer walls of ice rising above their kayaks. John Hopkins Glacier is in the upper portion, and though the icebergs stop Tribute about a mile and a half from the glacier, we can see the occasional chunk calve into the water with the huge splash. The ice is hundreds of feet thick, and the cracking noise — the low, deep-throated rumble of fracturing — speaks of immense power. We continue up Tarr Inlet to explore Margerie Glacier and the Grand Pacific Glacier. Shipperly conserves fuel and scouts two anchorage possibilities. All the cruise ships go up Tarr Inlet because Margerie Glacier is a postcard glacier with very high perpendicular walls and spectacular mountains in the background.

Again we hear the deep rumble of moving and fracturing ice. There is active calving but the bay is mostly clear of icebergs, perhaps because of the movement of two cruise ships each day. This illustrates the balancing act of managing the park: access vs. preservation. About half a million people come to the park each year and only 25 pleasureboats are allowed each day, so the cruise ships bring more than 80 percent of the people. The Grand Pacific Glacier is the opposite of Margerie: dirty, dark, foreboding. It leaves behind a moon-like landscape. It’s beautiful and awesome in its own way. This stop also marks the northernmost point of the trip, at 59 degrees north — or 11 degrees north from Everett, Wash., roughly equivalent to the distance between Seattle and San Francisco. The 10-knot breeze changes to a cold and stiff 30-knot wind at the glacier as it sweeps down the mountains and across the glacier. As we leave the glaciers, Tribute is going with the mild ebbing current and a light breeze on its stern the entire 8 miles to the anchorage at Russell Island where Shipperly awaits. We drop the anchor in 80 feet of water behind a small islet after a 51-mile day. Today our destination is the eastern arm of the park, including Muir Inlet. We raise anchor at 0900 hours to take advantage of the ebbing tide. The AIS display shows a tour boat stopped at a sheer mountainside, a sure sign of a wildlife sighting. We head for Gloomy Knob, a point on the mountain, and Ken and Pauline see the dozen mountain goats first. They are several hundred feet above the water, on rocky ledges that have enough topsoil to support plant life. Their snow-white coats and horns, both male and female, are plain to see and we enjoy their presence before heading down the bay, its surface mirror smooth. At 1230 hours we turn to port to enter Muir Inlet, also labeled as the eastern arm. We spy a humpback whale in the distance feeding near the shore and the first of about 20 sea otters we count during the afternoon. The Takinsha Mountains rise out of the water and dominate the eastern view, their tallest peaks encased by puffy white clouds in the blue sky. The huge Riggs Glacier meanders out of the mountains to the bay. One difference between the western and eastern arms is the latter is heavily forested on low foothills that are in the foreground of the mountains. We turn up the Wachusett Inlet after conducting an initial look at Hunter Cove as an anchorage. The anchorage possibilities are very few because of the deep water. Hunter Cove has 60-foot depths but is wide open to the south and the fetch from the long inlet. If the winds remain light, the anchorage will be fine. SEAMAGAZINE.COM  NOVEMBER 2018  35

The few icebergs at the entrance to Wachusett Inlet come from the Muir Glacier — the upper portion of Muir Inlet is closed to motorized vessels — and are held in a kind of limbo between the changing currents and breezes. Wachusett Inlet is 9 miles long, and the water is pure glass, the air warm and still, so we move to the flybridge to enjoy it and take in the view. The glacier has receded greatly and is not as impressive as others, but like a diamond in a store full of diamonds, it is still a gem. Returning to Hunter Cove, we see

whitecaps. The ride at anchor should be safe, but it will definitely be more uncomfortable. The best alternative anchorage is 12 miles away, which will make the day longer than we hoped but is acceptable. Near Garforth Island, a humpback surfaces near Shipperly and Laurie photographs the huge fluke before it disappears under the surface. At 1900 hours we drop the anchor in South Sandy Cove, behind Puffin Island, in 45 feet of water. We’re lucky. This is peak season for boaters and this is one of the most popular anchorages, but there are just two other boats. We eat dinner during “Oceans 12” and drop off to sleep.

H

The next day, the two other boats are gone at breakfast. A weak low-pressure system is moving across the region and bringing a thick cloud cover. Midday temperature is forecast at 69 degrees with calm winds and flat water. Shipperly heads 36

out at 0800 hours to Bartlett Cove to take on fuel and get an internet connection. We spend the morning in downshift mode, catching up on photos and writing and simply enjoying the cove. Laurie does a flurry of baking, which yields chocolate chip cookies, a blueberry and rhubarb crisp, and lasagna. After lunch, I bring the drysuit and dive gear up from the engine room and spend an hour scraping the rudder and cleaning the hull in the 50-degree water. The visibility is horrible due to the summer plankton bloom. But what is horrible for divers is great for whales, since they feed on the critters that live off the plankton. After we clean, rinse and hang the gear to dry in the cockpit, we coordinate our departure time to match slack current at the head of Glacier Bay. The water is mirror-flat, the wind is quietly still, and this huge national park and wilderness is quiet and empty of people. At 1630 hours we raise anchor and idle Tribute out of the

cove, which is now empty of boats. A humpback whale mom and calf are swimming and diving together near Flapjack Island, and that is the prelude to an awesome experience that will begin in 30 minutes near Young Island. Our attention is riveted by the repeated sight of water being splashed by huge flukes. The action is about 3 miles away, but the flat water and the height of the water being forced into the air makes it plain to see. For 20 minutes, the repeated slapping of a huge fluke continues. Spouts from two other whales are nearby. Then, long side fins are raised skyward, as a whale rolls on its side. Tribute is mid-channel between Young Island and Lester Island and nearing three whales. Tempted to change course to evade them, we remember the clear words of the instructions to boaters: Maintain course and speed and the whales will evade you. All of this set the stage for the main event, which is the scene that opens this story.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE DOME Stay in touch and entertained, no matter how far afield you wander. By Capt. Tom Serio Remember the old tagline once used by a major wireless carrier — “Can you hear me now?” — that was supposed to tout the virtues of its network? The phrase is still uttered today, especially when people are trying to converse over a not-so-stellar wireless network or when they’re on the fringe of their coverage area.

We all want to be heard, which requires that we be connected. What happens when we test the connectivity limits of our devices by cruising outside of our comfort zone and coverage area? Perhaps beyond the horizon? Certainly, there are other options than the standard land-based hookups. But they are not all created equally, even though by virtue of their names one would think they are. Let’s create a cruising scenario to better explain the capabilities and limitations of “networked” communications on the high seas. Picture this: You have worked hard your whole life and been successful in business and with family. Now’s the time to enjoy the fruits of your labor, and the trip of a lifetime will be soon upon you. Plans for a cruise in your boating palace, Sinbad, will take you down the California coast for a stopover in Mexico for the first leg before a long fetch to Tahiti in French Polynesia for a few months. Communications and internet connectivity are high on your list of wants and needs. What if something goes wrong and you need to call for help? How about the need to check in with home base to report location and status? It seems like we can’t go very long without being connected to the internet, for social reasons and entertainment value. That can be a concern when cruising for weeks at a time too.

Within Reach Cellular or wireless phone systems are great on land. The technology continues to evolve, from devices with 3G technology to now mostly 4G, and 5G is already in test mode for some level of rollout in 2019 by the major carriers. On land-locked waterways such as lakes and rivers, boaters shouldn’t have too much concern for getting connected. Even boaters doing a little near-shore coastal cruising in the open ocean — and I do mean near-coastal — should be OK. Networks typically hone their antennas toward the population, meaning customers on land, but some carriers do point an array toward the ocean, especially in higher traffic areas such as inlets and reefs. Wireless signals can carry far over open water due

Globalstar’s sat phones are a good choice for nearcoastal cruising in much of the world. Iridium handsets are popular too, because its coverage is much wider.

Communications and internet connectivity are high on your list of wants and needs. to an absence of obstructions and a denser atmosphere. But it’s not guaranteed to offer continuous service. Relying on a cellphone exclusively in times of distress links you to only the party you’re calling, and that’s if you find a signal. It’s not recommended to rely just on cellphones in an emergency. VHF and sideband radios offer much better opportunities for more boaters to hear you if you’re in distress and need help. With Sinbad near the California coast and within sight of land, cell coverage is typically attainable near larger towns. Off the desolate coastal areas that line the coast, however, getting any bars on the phones can be tricky at best. Without communication capabilities, you really are out there on your own. In the Southern California ports on down to San Diego, where you’ll go to provision, cell coverage may be decent. Shortly, though, you’ll be heading south of the border, and cell service isn’t the same in other countries as it is in the U.S. What’s a cruiser to do?

Bird’s-eye View To be safe, Sinbad is equipped with a handheld satellite phone. But not all satellite phones or the services provided are equal. The types of orbits the satellites

make, the number of satellites above earth, and the device itself can all have an influence on the coverage and connection capabilities. Satellites fly in one of two orbits: low Earth orbit (LEO) or geostationary (GEO). Geostationary is what it sounds like. A satellite stays in one position over the Earth as observed from a point on Earth. Geostationary birds are typically located over the equator at around 22,000 miles in altitude. Low Earth orbit satellites have an orbital period the same as Earth’s but are not fixed over the equator. They have an elliptical or figure-8 path and return to the same position over Earth each day. They travel about 500 miles above earth and offer a broader range of coverage.

The Players The market includes several satellite communication providers, but three of the better known brands are Iridium, Inmarsat and Globalstar. Globalstar flies 24 active satellites — a few spares up there too! — in a LEO with the base of their coverage over land and near-coastal. Globalstar’s main service is in satellite communications and low-speed data transmission over terrestrial areas and near-coastal. Coverage maps for Globalstar SEAMAGAZINE.COM NOVEMBER 2018

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE DOME service show mostly North American and western European coverage for voice and data (Generation 2) services, with Gen 1 reaching farther into South America, Australia and the Pacific Rim. Globalstar’s SPOT messenger service is a tracking device that also provides text messaging (41 characters). It has a much broader coverage area because it’s covered by 48 satellites and is typically used for rescues on land and sea but limited for regular usage. Cruising Sinbad down the California coast toward Mexico, a Globalstar sat phone will work while off the U.S. coast but likely drop its connection south of the border. Globalstar satellites have to connect to groundbased gateway stations to tap into the public switch telephone network (cellular base stations) and so need to be in view of a gateway station to provide service. There are 24 Globalstar Gateways around the world, with seven in North America. Flying in a geostationary orbit, Inmarsat’s fourth-generation global mobile satellite communications (I-4) network has 13 satellites at 22,236 miles above Earth. Founded to support merchant maritime communications, Inmarsat covers the globe’s sea lanes, including the Pacific Ocean region. Iridium has a satellite constellation of 66 crosslinked LEO stations, approximately 485 miles above Earth. Covering Earth’s surface from pole to pole, the Iridium satellites communicate with neighboring satellites on the Ka band, resulting in continuous visibility and service coverage.

Data, Data, Data For extensive offshore cruising, a satellite service provider has to be chosen carefully. Globalstar will not cover Sinbad’s telecom needs across the Pacific or even in Tahiti. Inmarsat and Iridium will, so how can cruisers break the tie? Broadband data service needs and package price, for the most part. Broadband connectivity is possible on the high seas. Cruisers just need to know who can supply it and for how much. Pricing for data streaming from a satellite is becoming more competitive between the satellite carriers, which typically means better pricing and/or airtime for consumers. But depending on data usage, the service can still be costly. Downloading favorite videos, books and photos from a land-based service prior to casting off would be prudent, to minimize sticker shock. High-speed internet is offered by Inmarsat and Iridium through a number of services, keeping Sinbad online and posting along the way. They both offer several packages for voice, high or low data usage, and seasonal demands. 42

“Satellite technology has evolved to the point where we can access high-quality voice and data on demand from anywhere in the world,” said Adam Eckstein, mobile business development manager with Atlantic Radio Telephone in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and SatPhoneStore in Miami. He noted the ability to monitor video surveillance on your yacht or other remote locations, to tap into weather services and to make emergency calls as a few needs that rank above standard movie streaming. “Package options are beneficial, especially if service is not needed on a long-term basis.” I saw a side-by-side comparison of the coverage maps (go to satphonestore. com and click on “Coverage Maps” on the top line, if you want to see a comparison) and it showed Iridium has full coverage around the globe and from pole to pole. Inmarsat also displays good coverage over most of the oceans except those areas on the northern and southern fringes. Globalstar offers complete coverage for North America and most of South America, as well as other countries.

Gaining Strength Picking up a satellite connection requires a good antenna. Most portable voice sat phones have a flip-up or extendable antenna, suitable with clear

Mayday, Mayday Of course, any yacht on a lengthy or offshore transit should be fitted with an EPRIB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon). The EPIRB will send a distress signal via the Cospas-Sarsat (International Search and Rescue System) polar orbiting satellite system.   With a satellite phone, you can also connect with other emergency responders. SOS services are available from the three carriers mentioned, depending on device used and plan chosen.

line of sight to a satellite but also on pretty steady footing. Luckily, Sinbad is equipped with a satellite dome antenna up on a mast spreader, for improved voice and continuous broadband connectivity. Usually seen on yachts and large sailboats, the domed antenna basically contains a motorized satellite dish that can tilt and rotate on two- or three-axis configurations. The dish will lock on to the satellite signal, and then as the boat swings, rolls or pitches, the satellite receiver remains locked on the signal by tilting and rotating. One of the best known manufacturers in sat dome antennas is KVH, which builds the antennas but doesn’t have its own satellite service. It resells services from providers such as Inmarsat and others. Its TracVision and TracPhone domes are ubiquitous in marinas everywhere, as yachts big and small seek to stay connected. Intellian’s VSAT line keeps communications on track, with the V60 dome being the smallest at about 30 inches wide and 33 inches tall. For satellite TV, its i-series antennas and domes, ranging from 15 AtlanticRT.com to 47 inches tall, have a size and solution for Globalstar.com most any-size boat, and a few of the models Inmarsat.com have worldwide capabilities. IntellianTech.com Satellite TV is the strength of Raymarine’s Iridium.com STV systems, which range from 13 inches to KVH.com almost 24 inches. They’re specialized to regions Raymarine.com of the globe, so boat owners with ocean-crossSatphonestore.com ing ambitions might want to look elsewhere. What is convenient is that a vendor such as Atlantic Radio Telephone can match the service you need with the right phone and antenna that will supply the desired services. Other players in the sat dome market are Raymarine, Intellian and a few more. With early planning for communication and entertainment needs during an extended cruise, boat owners should be well aware of their needs before they leave shore. Not all satellite services are equal, and knowing that is a great first step to conducting the necessary research and finding the equipment, service and plan that fit the crew’s need. Nobody want to be halfway between here and there and yelling into his phone, “Can you hear me now?”

THANKSGIVING AFLOAT

We found plenty to be thankful for at Rosario Resort & Spa. BY DEANE HISLOP

TIED TO THE DOCK AT Rosario Resort & Spa Marina, Easy Goin’ rocks gently to the rhythm of the waves as the sun plays hide and seek in the broken gray winter clouds. The wind is a stiff southeast 16 mph with gusts to 27. It’s the day before Thanksgiving and we are here to take advantage of the resort’s amenities — and the Thanksgiving buffet. Our adventure began two days earlier, when we took advantage of a weather window and headed to Friday Harbor for a couple of days before continuing on to our ultimate destination. Arlene and I had been monitoring the weather for the past week and were fearful we wouldn’t be able to cross Rosario Strait the day before Thanksgiving. So when the wind and seas settled on Monday, we took the opportunity to get into the protection of the San Juan Islands.

The cruise across Rosario Strait couldn’t have been smoother as the afternoon sun beat down on a mirror-like surface. At Port of Friday Harbor we had the pick of guest slips. As the sun set, we walked into town and stopped at one of our favorite hangouts, Haley’s Sports Bar and Grill, to watch the Seahawks play on Monday Night Football and have dinner. Our dinner and drinks were good, especially the sriracha chicken bites, but unfortunately the Seahawks lost.

The following morning we ate breakfast at another one of our favorite establishments, Rocky Bay Café, but it rained all day, hard at times, and the wind blew strongly, for good measure. We spent the day in the warmth and protection of Easy Goin’. Wednesday was moving day. In the morning when we woke, the rain had stopped and it was calm but predicted to increase throughout the day. By the time we departed the wind was southeast at 11 mph with gusts to 17. The opposing wind and tidal current made it bumpy as we rounded the southern end of Shaw Island and at the mouth of East Sound. The whitecaps settled as we moved up East Sound, and when we arrived the wind was gusting 23 mph. Out in Rosario Strait the wind was a steady 28 mph with gusts to 35. We made the correct decision to leave Monday and get into the protection of the San Juan Islands. We would not have been able to cross in these conditions, so we’re glad we came early, because the first evening of our visit we enjoyed fireside martinis and SEAMAGAZINE.COM  NOVEMBER 2018  PNW-1

The Mansion

More than a century old, the Moran Mansion was built as the private residence of Seattle shipbuilder and two-time Seattle mayor Robert Moran. It changed hands several times after Moran’s death in 1943 and is still one of the Pacific Northwest’s great mansions. Guests can take a self-guided tour of the mansion — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — which is like stepping back in time. Its ambiance resembles the great ocean liners of the past, reflecting Moran’s shipbuilder history and his use of company shipwrights to construct the mansion, which is adorned with black-and-white family photographs, original furnishings and fixtures, and an extensive display of ships built by the Moran Brothers Co.

The centerpiece of the resort is the mansion (see The Mansion sidebar), and the centerpiece of the mansion is the Grand Music Room. It features a two-story 1913 Aeolian pipe organ, a 1900 Steinway piano, a Belgian stained-glass window and a Tiffany chandelier. Thanksgiving morning, guests were treated to a concert and history lesson by the resort’s general manager and accomplished pianist, Christopher Peacock. Midafternoon marked the time for the day’s main event in The Mansion Restaurant where guests enjoyed a magnificent traditional Thanksgiving feast prepared by Executive Chef Raymond Southern, Sous Chef Jesse Berning and their staff. The holiday menu featured fresh local produce, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and a charcuterie board full of meats. Even the turkey and prime rib beef came from the nearby farms.

The bread and a huge selection of dessert items were created by Christina Rockweit, the mansion’s pastry chef. We paired our meals with a bottle of handcrafted Washington wine from the restaurant’s extensive wine list. With a beautiful sweeping view of Cascade Bay and East Sound from our table, we enjoyed our incredible two-anda-half-hour meal. After at least one taste of each of the offerings — and a return trip to the dessert table — we headed back to Easy Goin’ to watch a movie and enjoy a nightcap. The wind down made for an excellent ending to a wonderful day. We have many things to be thankful for, and the ability to boat year-round in the Pacific Northwest is high on the list. For boat owners who appreciate a quiet, peaceful Thanksgiving getaway, a visit to Rosario Resort & Spa can be especially enjoyable.

THE RACE TO ALASKA (R2AK.COM) is an insane wind- and human-powered contest that pits any motorless vessel — mono- and multihull sailboats, solo and tandem kayaks, prone SUPs, homebuilt row/pedal boats — against the rest of the field and covers a 750-mile course from Port Townsend, Wash., to Ketchikan, Alaska. This simple contest has even simpler prizes: $10,000 to the winning team, a set of steak knives to the runner-up. That’s it. In 2018, for the first time, an all-female team took the $10K, winning by a margin of about two hours. Team Sail Like a Girl is composed of these crewmembers: Jeanne Assael Goussev, Anna Stevens, Kate Hearsey McKay, Aimee Fulwell, Allison Dvaladze, Kelly Adamson Danielson, Haley King Lhamon, and Morgana Buell. We got the scoop from Goussev, Fulwell and Dvaladze. SEA: How did you gather this winning team? Goussev: We pulled the team from all walks of life and we trained hard together for seven months. Haley was the last addition in May. Fulwell: We became fast friends through hard work and our common dedication to this huge endeavor. It feels amazing to be surrounded by this team, and to have the unyielding support from shore crew from around the globe. Dvaladze: The team has over 110 years of experience; this includes individuals who have sailed nearly all their lives, have actively participated in racing on a variety of different styles of boats, and even a few of us who only recently picked up the sport this March after we splashed the boat! What type of boat did you choose for the race and why? Fulwell: Jeanne and the majority of the team primarily have experience on

Did you face any technical issues during the race? Goussev: We had to rerun our reef lines at a pretty inconvenient time when the weather turned, but we got through it. Our process for reefing wasn’t super-efficient in general, but fortunately we only had to do that a few times. Was there something your team prepared for and expected but never happened? Fulwell: We prepared for all weather conditions, packing a few dry suits and Mustang suits, and fortunately those were not needed. We also had a third reef point put in the main sail, which we did not need either. We all likely overpacked with lots of base layers and second sets of foulies, expecting colder weather; when we came into Seymour Narrows, it was over 80 degrees and we had to pull out shorts and tank tops. Any pearls of wisdom for anyone thinking about participating next year? Goussev: Prepare for all weather and prepare for moisture. Study the route options, know when to reef, reef early, and know your duck-out points. Try not to have the fear of missing out and force yourself to sleep as much as possible. When considering how much food you’re taking, cut your estimates way back. We were so focused on sailing, we weren’t all that hungry and had tons left over. We definitely preferred easy-to-grab snacks over taking the time to boil water and prepare our dehydrated meals. And speaking of water: Stay hydrated! Is Sail Like a Girl going to make a return to R2AK next year? Dvaladze: After this year’s race, we’ve realized that Sail Like a Girl is much bigger than we ever anticipated. We have an opportunity to continue to encourage women and girls to get outside their comfort zone and find their inner warrior on the water. While we haven’t made any plans for the coming year, anything is possible!

EDITED BY STEPHANIE SHIBATA

Oceanside Harbor is the ideal pit stop when traveling from Los Angeles or Orange County to San Diego.

QUICK ESCAPE

A BREAK ALONG THE COAST Between Orange County and San Diego, Oceanside is a boater’s best friend.

TUCKED INTO THE BELLY OF the half-moon sweep of land from Dana Point to San Diego, bordering the south end of Camp Pendleton and the north end of Carlsbad, is Oceanside. It is in relatively close proximity to many attractions in Orange County and San Diego, but boaters who stop here can enjoy an escape without leaving town, maybe without leaving the immediate harbor area. WHERE TO MOOR Oceanside Harbor 1 welcomes visiting boaters with 24 guest slips and side ties that are available but must be reserved prior to visiting. Please note that Oceanside Harbor does

not issue refunds. Current guest fees (as of this writing) are $1.30 per foot per day (April-September) and $0.80 per foot per day (October-March). THE HARBOR There is much to see and do in the harbor, which has all the amenities: a fuel dock, white sandy beaches, gift shops and eateries. The wide beach, just a short sea-leg-stretching distance from the harbor, has fire pits and barbecue areas. A curious public space, known to locals as the Clapping Circle, is near the entrance to the harbor 2 and shouldn’t be missed. Locals claim that anyone who stands in the middle of the clapping circle will, due to odd sound and acoustics, hear a strange squeak instead of what he expects to hear: clapping. GET TO KNOW

Downtown Oceanside and its eateries are a short walk from the harbor, and the pier is a great spot for a view of the sunset.

Haunted Head Saloon 8 is a militaryfriendly bar on the same block that offers drink specials, low prices and plenty of foosball and pool tables. For an ironically upscale experience — elegance in a former car repair shop — Master’s Kitchen and Cocktail 9 has daily specials, happy hour, fresh seafood and artisanal beverages made from craft spirits. For stunning views of Oceanside Pier and beyond, 333 Steakhouse Pacific 10 offers nightly dinner service in a luxe steakhouse atmosphere. PURE CALIFORNIA The California Surf Museum 11 is in Oceanside. Boaters interested in the state’s official pastime can spend an afternoon learning about surf heritage, how the sport has evolved through the years and its impact on pop culture. Permanent exhibitions and historical artifacts range from CA-4

the iconic to the novel. Another local attraction is the Top Gun 12 house, which can be identified by its bright blue exterior on the corner of North Pacific Street and 1st Street. For gamblers, Ocean’s Eleven Casino 13 has table games, and its dining and entertainment are themed to make visitors feel like part of the Rat Pack. Oceanside is not only logistically convenient for boaters to stop for fuel or a break, it’s a great destination in and of itself!

ANO NUEVO ISLAND

CUTWATE

AT A MERE NINE ACRES in size, Ano Nuevo Island has gone through a lot in its short existence as an island. What was a peninsula not so long ago is now desolate and abandoned — the last lighthouse keepers vacated in 1948. Today the island is home to hundreds of sea lions and marine birds.

 It’s located approximately halfway

between San Francisco and Santa Cruz.

 There appears to be a haunted mansion perched on an outcropping of rocks extending from Point Ano Nuevo.

 The island is closed to the public, so appreciate it from a safe distance.

 It was named by Don Sebastian

Vizcaino on Jan. 3, 1603, for the date it was discovered.

 Watch out below! The area is known as a hotbed for great white sharks due to the high concentration of pinnipeds.

CABO 41

The Cabo brand is coming back, and its first model is the 41. AFTER FIVE YEARS OF not building any new boats, the Cabo brand announced its intention to launch anew. Targeting the Miami International Boat Show in February 2019, Cabo plans to introduce the new Cabo 41, which is being built at the Hatteras/Cabo facility in New Bern, N.C.

Founded in California in 1991, Cabo made its name with express-style fishing boats, and that’s what the 41 will be, and it will be available in three styles: no tower, half tower and full tower. The belowdecks accommodations on all three versions include a forward berth, a head, a galley and a salon/dinette settee that converts to a second berth. The specs show 6 feet, 3 inches of headroom belowdecks, so all but the tallest passengers will fit nicely. On the main deck, a helm area, a cockpit and a mezzanine comprise the arrangements. The centerline helm includes a captain’s chair and a companion seat to starboard. An L-shaped settee runs along the port side and across the back of the helm deck. It shares its backrest with the mezzanine seat in the cockpit, where there is a base for a leaning post or fighting chair. A console to starboard

features refrigerator/freezer/ice-maker options and plenty of tackle storage. A hardtop covers the helm deck on the half-tower and full-tower versions. Hatteras’ partner Carolina Custom Towers will fabricate the full towers, including outriggers, on a buyer-by-buyer basis. Standard power for the 42-foot, 10-inch fishing vessel comes from twin 626 hp Volvo D11 diesels. Buyers can upgrade to 670 and 725 hp Volvo engines or Cummins QSM11 powerplants. One option more offshore anglers are choosing is a gyro stabilizer, in this case a Seakeeper 6. It takes the rocking and rolling out of a day of drifting. SEAMAGAZINE.COM NOVEMBER 2018

ASK A BROKER

BROKERAGE ADVICE

For an answer to this question, we looked to a feature in our August 2018 issue called “8 Qualities of a Yacht Sales Professional,” written by Zuzana Prochazka. Here are qualities mentioned in the feature.

NOVEMBER’S QUESTION:

When it’s time to find a broker for my yacht purchase, what are a couple of the big traits I should look for? UNDERSTANDS THE BIGGER PICTURE

Part of the process of buying and selling a pre-owned vessel is the survey. It’s expensive and lengthy and sometimes halts a sale for ridiculous reasons. A seller once lost a deal because the surveyor stopped the survey due to an inoperative genset. A broker must understand what equipment is and isn’t mission critical and, more importantly, must be able to relate this clearly to the buyer. “Delaminated stringers may or may not tank a deal, and the broker needs to relate what it will take to fix the problem and if it’s a deal-breaker based on the expectations and resources of the buyer,”

said Matt Maynard, past president of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association and owner of Irwin Yacht Sales in Seattle. “New boaters especially can get wrapped up in the minute details, and a good broker must be technical enough to understand what would and should derail a deal.” It’s the broker’s job to properly represent the problem and urge the owner to fix issues prior to a survey, if possible. He has to put it all in perspective for both sides or something fairly simple —a missing prop, for example — may be where it all ends. Another bigger picture item is value, especially for buyers purchasing vessels out of the area. There are regional differences in both pricing and environmental

conditions that boats have endured. A boat in Florida may seem like a deal to a buyer in California, but climate, type of use and shortages of similar vessels will all be a part of the market dynamics for a particular transaction. “Shipping calculators tell only a part of the story,” Maynard said. “That’s where experience and perspective differentiate a good broker.”

PROBES FOR TRUE NEEDS

A good salesperson knows how to probe and find the customer’s needs, and that goes double for vessel sales. A buyer may walk into a broker’s office convinced he’s looking for a cherry red cigarette boat, but once the broker digs and asks how the buyer sees himself using the vessel and what would make his wife and kids happy, she may discover that what the buyer really needs is a baby blue trawler. Boat brokering is a bit like matchmaking, and once one’s true desires are unearthed, then the search can start in earnest, wasting less time and energy for everyone involved.

Other rates with different loan terms are available. See our website for rates and terms for financing liveaboards and loan amounts below $25,000. Example of a recreational use boat loan: A $65,000 loan for 5 years with an APR of 4.89% has 60 monthly payments of $1,223.36 each. Member FDIC. Equal Housing Lender.
