BABY ON BOARD Raising a Baby on a 47' Vagabond Sailboat
“ARE YOU INSANE?” THESE are my first thoughts, when I hear anyone would want to raise a baby on a boat. I am not talking about a Hatteras 100 Motor Yacht – I am sure most of us would jump at the chance to liveaboard, with the entire family in tow! I am talking about a sailboat of a smaller scale. Please don’t think my hesitation is because I believe a 47-foot sailboat is small. On the contrary, she is a classic beauty; a William Garden design, very comfortable in size, great for entertaining friends and built for cruising. Adding a baby into the mix, however, is a whole different kettle of fish! Allison and Michael knew they’d raise their baby boy on a sailboat the moment they learned of his arrival. That was in 2019. The couple, at the time, had owned a Hunter Legend 35. They decided to upgrade to a roomier 1980 Vagabond 47, and immediately prepared Bold Venture to be their liveaboard. Two months later, Graysen Lee was born! Allison and Michael both having a love for Catalina Island. Harbor met Michael’s criteria. It provides the lifestyle he and his wife desire to raise a family: a more remote and rustic atmosphere; lots of wildlife; good water quality; and, great protection for the boats anchored or moored there. Simplicity at its finest. It is the deepest cove on the island – located at Two Harbors, on the West End, southward facing. On the opposite side of the island is the city of Avalon, which offers schools, grocery, a medical center, restaurants, and entertainment. Graysen recently celebrated his first birthday. He is able to run about, giving me the prime opportunity to see how raising a baby on a boat is working out thus far. While sitting at a park on the island, I start out with the basics asking about how she and Michael prepared for the baby’s arrival. “We bought Bold Venture as a project boat so there were quite a few tasks that Michael had to tackle alone but as far as preparing the boat for the baby,” Allison said, smiling. “It was relatively easy being that a sailboat comes pretty much baby proofed because it is ready for the sea.” All edges of a sailboat are round. There are no sharp corners. All cabinets open from the top and already have latches. “We added a few extra lifelines, a canvas cover for the step-down ladder and netting for the V-Berth, also known as Graysen’s Master State Room,” said Allison. “Michael is a very hands-on dad. He was instrumental when I first gave birth, helping in every way. He actually taught me to change Grayson’s diaper and he still comes home each day for lunch.
We cook, clean and play together.” They seem to have it all worked out, genuinely enjoying the lifestyle they have chosen and thankful every day Graysen has the opportunity to grow up living on a boat. The couple is also about conserving our planet, saving our oceans, enjoying what nature has to offer and not getting caught up in society’s obsession with social media. These are the values they are trying to instill upon Grayson as well. Grayson does not watch any television, nor does he play on an iPad or phone. He loves story time with dad, listens to classical piano music with mom, playing chase and helping wash the dishes on deck. Grayson is learning about the sea and wildlife on the island. Cat Harbor is not only a great place to fish and bird watch, on any given day you are likely to see deer, sea lions and the Catalina bison. Allison also makes it a point to spend time playing on the beach or in the park, while doing the family’s laundry at the public laundry mat onshore. I asked if they have any tips for new parents wanting to raise a baby onboard. Allison said the best thing to do is prepare early. The extra lifelines and netting are crucial, and a baby life jacket is essential! She recommends a carrier. It helps when getting on and off the boat and substitutes for the perfect baby seat with limited boat space. She also suggests a collapsible bathtub that fits and easily stores in the shower. Everything else, it more of a learn as you go scenario. I asked her if she would like to leave me with one last word. “Teamwork,” Allison said.

RESTLESS AT SEA Sailing the Waters of Southern California
sport. To be honest, before purchasing Restless, I had only sailed about five times, but I just fell in Love with the sport! I was looking to purchase a house, but this was 2008 and the stock market crashed,” Capt. Mike said. “I started getting skittish about buying a home and decided to buy a boat instead. So, at age 48, never owned a boat, I bought a 50-foot Gaff Rig Schooner to be a live aboard and she was my home for more than four years.” That was 11 years ago. He bought her in 2009, making Capt. Mike the 5th owner/2nd owner after she hit the water. What is it that makes Restless special? She is a headturner, to be sure, but what makes her unique? “Anyone who knows construction as I do, loves wood. Wood is a living, breathing thing and Restless is one of a kind,” Capt. Mike said. Restless was crafted in 1960 in Morro Bay by builder David Baxter. She was one of five hulls built. Only two of the hulls remain today. Restless resides in Long Beach; brother Boatwright is up in Washington State. Even though the hulls are the same, the interior, mast and sail plan are different, making Restless truly one of a kind. She is a Gaff Rig schooner with a topmast set. With no detail left unturned, she has a classic nautical style boasting of beautiful Philippine mahogany and white oak, carvel planking and copper fasteners. In all her glory she stretches 62 feet (LOA) and 49 feet (LOD); she sleeps six and has two full heads. Capt. Mike and his partner, Lynn, have put countless hours into the boat’s upgrades including all new mahogany throughout, stained glass in the master cabin and most recently set her topmast and bowsprit. She is showroom condition, and, in my eyes, she is the yacht of sailboats. Capt. Mike spends most off days sailing near Long Beach or to Catalina with friends. He recently earned his captain’s licenses and started a charter service. He said it is a great opportunity for him to share his love of sailing and his boat with others. When he retires, he has his sails set on the South Pacific, Tahiti and Australia. Until then, we all have an opportunity to experience the wind in our hair as the sails take on life, the smell of the salty ocean and mahogany

way to spend the day than sailing the seas on a Gaff Rig Schooner? I think not. The Gaff Rig Schooner, widely popular in the 18th and 19th century, are more of a rarity today. If, however, you happen to be a Seal Beach/Long Beach local or a frequent boater to Catalina Island, you might have been blessed to lay your eyes upon Restless. She will stop you in your tracks, make your mouth drop and stand for a moment in awe of her beauty.

I am a lover of the ocean and my passion is sailing, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to sit down with Michael Martin (better known as Capt. Mike at Yucatan Grill, a Seal Beach favorite) and talk about our love of sailing and his Gaff Rig Schooner named Restless. We opened the conversation with how he came to acquire Restless. “I never thought I could afford a boat, especially one of this size. wood, seeing a dolphin pod race alongside the side of the boat and charter a Sail on a Gaff Rig Schooner named Restless! Wrapping up our interview while enjoying one of Yucatan Grill’s tasty margaritas, I asked the captain one last question: Is Restless still your dream boat or would your trade her in for something else if given the perfect opportunity? From the mouth of a true boat lover, Capt. Mike answered with these last words: “I have put my blood, sweat and tears into this boat. Restless is like my mistress. She requires a lot of time and money, but I wouldn’t trade her for anything in the world.”

DO YOU KNOW THE DRIVETRAIN? Every boat owner should know how to inspect these three components.

A VESSEL’S DRIVETRAIN IS typically defined as the components between the engine transmission coupling and the “bitter end” of the propeller shaft. For traditional drivetrains, this includes the propeller, shaft, cutless bearing and packing gland, although the list could be expanded to encompass ancillary items such as the rudder, engine mounts, and engine bedworks. Here’s a look at three major drivetrain components you should know, and what to look for when inspecting each. cutless bearing supports the propeller shaft of a vessel while allowing it to turn freely 1/Propeller without damage. Next, simply grab the prop or shaft and give it a couple of good, firm shakes to detect shaft looseness within the bearing. Slight movement — say 1/16 inch or so — is borderline, but if you can produce visible shaft wiggle or an audible “thunk” when shaking the prop, the bearing is definitely due for replacement.
3/Stuffing Box
Only boats with inboard engines have stuffing boxes. To locate the one on your boat, trace the propeller shaft from the transmission to the point where it exits the hull. That’s where the stuffing box will be, unless you have a dripless-style shaft seal installed. The purpose of a stuffing box is to allow the propeller shaft to exit the hull while keeping water out. The shaft is sealed by compressing packing material against it, most often by using a hollow nut that screws onto a matching fitting attached to the the inboard side of the shaft log hose. Another common style features a tightening arrangement that uses a plate secured

by nuts and studs on either side of the shaft. The more you tighten either type of gland, the more the packing gets compressed against the shaft. Most packing consists of a square plaited material and comes either as traditional greased (or waxed) flax, or a more modern version impregnated with Teflon. Corrosion and leaks are common problems you’ll encounter when inspecting a stuffing box. The shaft log hose, which connects the stuffing box to the hull in most installations, should also be inspected for

deterioration due to age, corroded hose clamps, etc. Water helps lubricate the packing material, so it’s OK for a stuffing box to leak a few drips, three to four per minute, while the vessel is underway. More than that amount, say 10 drops per minute, or drips while the shaft is not turning indicates the need for adjustment or maintenance. A leaking stuffing box can cause numerous issues, from corrosion (the spinning shaft slings excess water all over the engine compartment) to sinking, particularly if
the boat is left unattended in the water for longer periods of time. Packing material will harden over time, as the lubricant dries out, and gets worn away by shaft rotation, which will allow water to pass and enter the vessel. When this happens, most people simply tighten the packing gland to compress the packing material and stop or reduce the leak. This works to a point, but as the packing gets smaller it also gets harder. Keep compressing it and it will eventually score the propeller shaft, which will then have to be replaced

Dripless Shaft Seals
Dripless shaft seals are an alternative to packing glands. They prevent water from entering the hull via pressure loading, typically by using a compressed rubber bellows to hold a graphite collar against a stainless steel collar. High-speed vessel installations will usually have a water injection hose plumbed to the engine’s raw-water cooling systems, which helps reduce heat generated between the two contact surfaces. While they don’t require repacking like traditional stuffing boxes, dripless shaft seals still have regularly scheduled maintenance requirements that must be carried out to ensure proper operation. These include periodic removal and inspection, as well as keeping the cooling hose clear and open.

Ah, youth! Full of excitement… and ignorance of the situation. IN 1979 WE’D JUST returned to the area and bought the small family marine dealership
which we were expanding with exuberance. We’d taken on Grumman aluminum boats and Suzuki engines and were proud of our choices. The front showroom had a nice 14’ aluminum skiff with a 9.9 on it, all ready to roll out the door. One hot summer day a portly gentleman in dirty clothes came in, followed by an equally scruffy young worker. They took a few minutes to enjoy the cool air conditioning blast while looking at the Grumman. “Tin boat,” said the man, “No, sir,” I countered, “aluminum. Quite a difference.” I hadn’t changed much from being a teen. I knew everything. “Yup. Tin boat. I got one too. This young man keeps it clean.” Well, you can see the thoughts going through my head as I’ve come nose-to-nose with not one, but two country bumpkins. “Wanna see my tin boat?” he asked. Okay, we’re new in town. Be nice. “Sure, I’d love to see it.” He reached in his pocket, pulled out a wallet held together with a mass of rubber bands, and from its center brought out a picture of his tin boat: an 80’ Burger, which went on a few

years later to be the State boat of Virginia, aka the governor’s toy. And after a few murmured words, the unbelievably wealthy bank president and his yard man decided the Grumman would be an excellent boat for running around the creek shores. Might we be able to deliver it that afternoon? Not only “Yes,” but “HELL YES!” Some fifteen years prior to that encounter I’d been fortunate to be in the right place at the right time after exchanging my primary work as a marine mechanic for a couple dismal years in college followed by management in The Hertz Corp. My first station was in tiny Newport News VA where the efforts my gang and I made to give Number One service to customers caught not only the eyes of our renters, but also our CEO, and the #1 Club was born. During my spell there, Mr. August Busch would come in off the York River from wherever people who can afford to go somewhere go, and oversee the construction of Busch Gardens. He needed a car to get from Gloucester Point to Williamsburg, so I’d send Howard and Harold, two excellent garagemen, also brothers who looked not a whit alike, to take a car to Mr. B. So you have an idea of leader/follower, Harold was short and studious, did well in school, went on to act on Broadway. Howard…well, Howard looked like the tallest of the Four Tops, and there was always this feeling you should count your fingers after shaking hands with him. That is no reflection on the Tops, one of my favorite groups of all time. It was most often on Friday that Mr. B needed a car, so the guys would take one over and “Oh by the way, we brought you this 32-oz Bud that’s not even on the market yet.” So Friday afternoons were reserved for Howard, Harold, Grid, and Bud. One Sunday morning Mr. B called me at home and asked if I could bring him a car. I woke The Bear up and she took me to the airport where I got a nice car and rental agreement, and headed for Gloucester Point. Let me tell you the Anheuser-Busch name got a good parking spot! While Mr. B was signing the rental agreement, he asked if I’d ever been on “the boat” before. I would have thought that my head craned back and a piece of straw stuck between my teeth
ID’d me as a country bumpkin, but I said I hadn’t. He told me to scoot upstairs to where the guys were and get one of them to show me around, after which I should go below with him and “grab a case of Bud the way Howard and Harold did.” Me: Silence. I’d be dumb to get him to repeat himself. So I went below after touring “The
Boat”, got a CASE of huge bottles, “the way Harold and Howard always did.” The conversation that took place in my office Monday morning is too long to print, but it was determined that from that day forward, a CASE divided by THREE was EIGHT ICE COLD BEERS. EACH!!! At least I didn’t need a college education to count to eight. Sheesh.

THE DESIGN IS A home run—fast and efficient, with an up galley and a spacious layout often found in much larger boats. Apollonian Yachts are designed by renowned naval architect Howard Apollonio. Howard’s past designs have been built everywhere from the US and Canada to countries abroad such as Holland, Taiwan, and China, by brands such as Christensen, Westport, Diaship/Heesen, Hampton/Regency, Cheoy Lee, West Bay/SonShip, Queenship/ Caribe, McKinna, Heisley, Rayburn, and Canoe Cove, among others. The Apollonian Yachts project is overseen by Vic Parcells and his Northwest-based team. The initial model is a 52’ pilothouse with a massive interior, 16’ 8” beam, three huge staterooms, three heads, a spacious salon aft of the dinette, up galley, pilothouse with day head, great walk-arounds, and an engine room to be marveled at. Albeit traditional, the layout has been a proven functional standard in comfort and livability aboard. The partnership with Vincenzo De Cotiis springs from the brand’s desire to reach a new milestone by creating for the first time ever a yacht that isn’t a container for art, but a work of art in its own right. One of the points of contact with the designer, a leading proponent of collectible art on the international scene, is a shared interest in fiberglass, as an essential construction material for Azimut Yachts and one of the favourite material of the artist. On this yacht fiberglass is given new life as a key element of the design. For Magellano 25 Metri, De Cotiis used a special type of resin and thanks to an elaborate artisanal process, the result of multiple layers and embellished with a bronze powder, he has given life to surfaces of parchment colour, characterized by a pleasant clouded effect and inclusions that in somehow recall those typical of some precious stones. The “artistic fiberglass” is joined by other materials and types of wood to create a highly appealing play of contrasts: brushed Verde Alpi marble, dark walnut wood, carpet, polished brass, lacquered wood and ribbed wood. The furnishings feature flowing shapes and a lot of effort has been put into creating a sense of continuity expressed by seamless, curving lines.

When I heard friends Dustin and Brie bought the Formula 353 Fastech, I was not surprised. Dustin has an appetite for speed and over-thetop toys. He wanted a boat that would fit right into the Lake Havasu summer lifestyle, and, just the same, navigate from Camarillo to Catalina Island in no time during the winter. Within minutes were landing in the warm waters of Lake Havasu, where JoeMac the Formula 353 Fastech awaited our
arrival. She is a beautiful beast stretching 35 feet and 3 inches in length, with perfect lines, twin engines and plenty of seating. This boat is not only made for speed but also comfort. We all hopped aboard and away we went. JoeMac is roomie up top, with four across seating and a sun pad for us girls to lay at leisure while listening to some tunes blasting out of speakers (which rest on each side of the step down). The boat has a generator onboard with a wet exhaust. Dustin fabricated the mount and wet exhaust system himself so that we could have power and charging batteries while floating the boat offshore. The observer seat was the perfect seat for Jason and Bella equipped with an electric seat drop down and adjustable footrest. The captain’s seat wraps around, fitting like a glove and positioned with all the wheel and

engine controls in optimal reach for Dustin. Spending the entire day out on the water, it’s nice to be able to go below deck and chill for a bit. I was delighted at how much thought and detail Formula put into this area. Brie said this was her main reason for choosing the boat. “Dustin had to have the speed and I had to have an elegant cabin and a spacious head compartment.” The Formula 353 Fastech definitely produces and will change your thinking about onboard accommodations forever. The cabin stands at 4 feet and 10 inches in height. Its forward Berth is 6 feet and 8 inches long and comfortably sleeps two, making it a great overnighter. The leather “U” shaped seating centers around a
removable cocktail table giving way for the seats to be converted into a double berth for those who want to watch television or sleep off the one too many drinks stocked in the mini refrigerator. If you decide to have lunch – as we did on the boat – there is also a sink below to clean up. This boat typically reaches an average speed of 74 miles per hour, but Dustin, wanting a little more out of it, rebuilt and painted both engines at his shop, giving JoeMac an extra 6 miles per hour edge! Flying through the waters and around each bend was effortless not spilling one sip of my drink thanks to the stainless-steel built-in cup holders. Even at top speeds and so many boats around us racing to Pirates Cove making the waters choppy, the boat
is solid. This is due to the fiberglass hull, making it a heavier and stronger boat – and, hence, makes for a safer ride. And when the sun starts to set, and the two-color contour lights come on, the water returns to its peaceful state and our day on the boat takes a wrap. My conclusion: the Formula 353 Fastech is a fine piece of boat and very well crafted. Until we meet again, Thank you JoeMac! The former mast on Stars & Stripes is now in three pieces and the former racing yacht, which is now run as a charter boat, remains out of commission.
SAN DIEGO—Former America’s Cup racing yacht Stars & Stripes USA 11 has been out of commission after a gust of wind during a sailing tour on July 15 snapped the mast in two spots. No one was injured during the incident. Stars & Stripes has taken people out on public and private sailing tours nearly 3,000 times over the past 15 years. Stars & Stripes Captain and Co-Owner Lynn Hanna said this is the first time something like this has happened. “Just the wrong time, the wrong place,” Lynn Hanna said. On July 15, Stars & Stripes welcomed 12 passengers and seven crew members onboard for the usual three-hour ride through San Diego Bay. The historic racing yacht was near the end of Harbor Island by Island Prime cruising from a wind out of the west blowing about 8 to 10 knots on a starboard tack when all of the sudden a loud noise cracked across the Bay. “We’re still a little shell shocked,” said Bee Hanna, Lynn Hanna’s wife, who was also onboard when the mast broke. Lynn Hanna said all of the sudden, the wind shifted 30 degrees and an
unexpected gust clocking 17 mph broke the mast at the first and second spreaders and the structure came down into the water on the side of the sailboat. “It was a very sudden, unexpected thing that happened,” Lynn Hanna said. “We’re kind of going along nice and relaxed and then all of the sudden you get this huge gust of wind.” Aside from that gust, Lynn Hanna said the wind had been consistent all day and the sails were trimmed accordingly, for 8 to 10 mph winds. “It changes direction a little bit, changes speed a little bit but right here, all of the sudden, the wind went from 8 miles an hour to 17,” Lynn Hanna said pointing to about 3:30 p.m. on a chart of the wind from their location on the Bay on July 15. A nearby private fishing vessel came over to make sure everyone was okay. Within a matter of minutes, the 12 passengers were safely loaded onto the fishing vessel and taken back to shore. The Hannas were able to get the mast out of the water and to Driscoll Boat Yard, where it awaits its fate. The insurance company came and looked at the mast on Aug. 11 and will determine if there was some kind of preventable maintenance that could have been done to prevent the failure. The Coast Guard did a complete inspection of Stars & Stripes in 2016, which included an infrared inspection of the mast and the rigging had been inspected in February, with no problems coming up. Stars & Stripes USA-11 is one of only a few America’s Cup racing yachts in the world used as a charter boat. The historical yacht was owned and raced by Team Dennis Conner in the 1992 race, which was

Another, less expensive option would be to replace the mast with a shorter, non-authentic mast. “The boat will be fine, it just won’t be as fast as the original,” Lynn Hanna said. Lynn Hanna is hoping to hear from interested buyers before making plans for a new mast. In the meantime, Lynn Hanna and his business partner will offer public sailing tours on IL Moro di Venezia ITA-16, another America’s Cup veteran. The Italian racing yacht also competed in the 1992 event in San Diego. Over the past 15 years it has been used for racing events versus Stars & Stripes and for small team building events. IL Moro has a passenger capacity of 12 compared to 25 on Stars & Stripes. Bee Hanna said they greatly appreciate the San Diego boating community and those who have reached out to them to offer well wishes.

A petition proposing a special tax on passengers traveling to Avalon and boaters renting city moorings to help fund the replacement of the Catalina Island Medical Center garnered enough signatures to appear on the November ballot. BY LINDSEY GLASGOW
AVALON—AVALON VOTERS IN NOVEMBER WILL vote on a revised measure proposing a tax on cross channel passengers and boaters renting harbor moorings. The special transportation tax would help fund the replacement of the Catalina Island Medical Center (CIMC). Verification of sufficient signatures for a petition entitled “Initiative Measure Imposing a Special Tax on Passengers Traveling to the City of Avalon and on the Mooring of Vessels Within the City of Avalon for the Purpose of Funding Costs Relating to the Improvement or Replacement of the Catalina Island Medical Center” was on the Aug. 4 City Council agenda. Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors member Shannon Hill said despite Covid-19 challenges, they were able to get enough signatures for the measure to appear on the Nov. 3 ballot. “We were really pleasantly surprised by the support that we found in gathering the signatures,” Hill said on the phone. The measure was written by the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation with the help of local community leaders. If passed, it would place a fee on passengers on all cross 36
channel carriers - ferries, cruise ships and aircrafts. It would also impose a $1 per day, per vessel visitor fee for those using harbor moorings. Due to the current economic climate, the tax wouldn’t start until 2022. The fee for cross channel traffic would be phased in, starting at 50 cents round trip in 2022, increasing to $1 round trip in 2023 and capping at $2 round trip in 2024. “We wanted to be very careful that we weren’t trying to impose a tax on people who are really hurting right now,” Hill said. The new measure also includes a sunset clause, stating the special tax would end in 40 years or whenever the construction costs are paid off, whichever happens sooner. In the April 2018 election, Avalon voters defeated a similar measure, Measure T. The measure proposed a $1 round trip tax on all passengers arriving or departing from Avalon via cruise ship, ferry or aircraft.

The measure only got the support of 36 percent of voters, while 55 percent voted against the measure, according to numbers from the city. “We definitely heard the community’s response to that ballot measure,” Hill said. “There was a lot of feedback and input given to us and some things we need to

CIMC must build a new hospital in order to comply with the California Hospital Association Seismic Safety mandate, whereby all California hospitals must operate from facilities that are deemed earthquake-safe by 2030, or be ordered to close. Hill said they are not able to retrofit the current hospital because the cost would be too high and there’s not enough space to do it. “The hospital is going to be forced to close its door because it does not meet the earthquake requirements in California,” Hill said. The new facility would also provide more space to meet the needs of residents and visitors. The island’s population and number of visitors have quadrupled since the hospital opened in 1960, according to CIMC. The initial project cost is projected to be about $60 million, according to the CIMC website. “I think with Covid-19 people have realized how important it is to have healthcare on the island and there’s a lot of community support around the hospital right now,” Hill said. Since 2018, when the first measure was

Hill said they are planning several virtual town halls to address any questions related to the proposed measure. Hill encouraged boaters to attend. ORANGE BEACH, ALABAMA—A SCUBA DIVER with plenty of experience catching fish, found himself on the other side of the line, thankfully becoming the one that got away.
J.T. Thompson, a diver and angler, now knows what it is like on the other side of the fishing line after getting hooked on an angler’s line while diving off the coast of Alabama.
J.T. Thompson was diving and doing some spearfishing with a friend off the Alabama coast when he found himself hooked. The friends were diving at a wreck called The Lulu, about 17 miles off the coast of Orange Beach, on June 27, when Thompson felt something in his neck. Thompson told news outlets he was 100 feet down and had just shot a snapper and was trying to pull the fish in when he felt a jerk and then suddenly he was being dragged to the surface. He said he grabbed it to see what it was and knew instantly what had happened.

By the time he got to the surface, Thompson said the boat and the angler had already taken off, leaving him and his diving buddy in the dark as to who made the catch. Despite the hook going through his scuba gear, neck and hand, Thompson was not seriously injured, but told news outlets he hopes his story will remind

FAMILY BOATING IN WISCONSIN SAVES BEAR SWIMMING WITH CHEESE BALL TUB ON HEAD BY LINDSEY GLASGOW
BLOOMER, WISCONSIN—A BOAT DAY OUT on a Wisconsin lake fishing turned into a rescue mission for a family who spotted a young bear cub with a plastic tub stuck on its head. The bear was swimming across Marsh-Miller Lake, ironically with a cheese ball container on his head in a state known as the “cheese state.” Tricia Hurt posted a video of the rescue mission to her Facebook page on June 28. “Never dreamt we would ever do this in our life time,” Hurt wrote in the Facebook video post. “Out on Marshmiller Lake yesterday with Brian Hurt and Brady Hurt when we spotted this poor bear.” The family saw the black bear as they were headed home from a day of fishing. The bear can be seen in the video struggling to swim across the lake with a plastic cheese ball container filled with an inch or so of water around its head. “We’re trying to figure out how we’re going to get this tub off his head,” Tricia said in the video as they pulled their boat up next the young bear. The video shows Brian
pulling on the tub and a lot of splashing before he lets go. The family circles around and pulls up to the bear a second time and this time the tub was successfully removed. The bear is then seen swimming off toward the shore. Tricia confirmed in the Facebook post the bear made it safely to land. The family told news sources after getting back to shore, they learned the bear had been spotted with the container on its head several times in the days prior, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources had been looking for it, with no luck. Since being posted, the video has been shared more than 24,000 times. The video can be viewed at bit.ly/3gAlgbf.

Buyers and sellers should know what to look for in a good broker. BY ZUZANA PROCHAZKA
Vin Petrella, executive director of the Yacht Brokers Association of America (YBAA), corrects me immediately when I ask about the subtle qualities of a good yacht broker. “We don’t use the term yacht broker anymore,” he said. “We now say ‘yacht sales professional,’ which we think is a more fair and comprehensive description for those individuals selling new and pre-owned vessels.”
This sets the tone for my conversation with Petrella and with others who agree that today, selling boats is viewed more as a profession and a career choice rather than just a job with a paycheck. Times have changed. Everyone likes to work with professionals who are honest and educated and conduct business with integrity, but what about the more specific and subtle characteristics and attributes of a good broker? (Broker will be used interchangeably with yacht sales professional throughout this story.) Look for the following characteristics, and you’ll be on the right track when it’s time to buy or sell a vessel. 1

failing the real estate exam. Not so today. Certification is becoming a key aspect of the career path. “Younger people coming into the industry are more interested in certification and official credentialing,” Petrella said. A Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB) desigdesig nation means the broker has passed a three-hour exam that covers the necessary industry body of knowledge. The test has more than 150 questions, including ones on technical competence and ethics. An experienced boat salesperson may take more than three months to read and understand the contents of the CPYBprovided study guide. After successfully passing the exam, a broker must provide proof of 30 continuing education units (CEUs) every three years in order to recertify. Brokers have to meet eight requirements to sit for the exam, one of which is being employed as a broker for three of the previous 10 years, including the year immediately prior to taking the exam. YBAA is a national association that in 2002 launched a certification program as a self-regulating measure in a mostly unregulated industry. Since then, more than 500 brokers have achieved CPYB status, and they consider it a badge of professionalism since only 10 to 20 percent of individuals in the country who claim to be boat salespeople hold this title. While some places are still widely unregulated, in California nobody can sell a boat without a license. The California Yacht Brokers Association (CYBA) is a regional association that together with the California Department of Boating & Waterways (DBW) develops two licensing exams, one for salespeople (think agent) and one for brokers (think fully licensed professional or organization able to post a bond). Per Adeline Yee of reguthe DBW, this state government arm licenses and regu lates yacht brokers and salespersons who are defined as any person selling used vessels 16 feet or longer and less than 300 gross tons and who does not own those vessels.. The DBW enforces the Harbors and Navigation Codes 700-740 to regulate the activities of licensees to ensure compliance and provide consumer protection. Certification therefore, is a matter of prestigious

A good salesperson knows how to probe and find the customer’s needs, and that goes double for vessel sales. A buyer may walk into a broker’s office convinced he’s looking for a cherry red cigarette boat, but once the broker digs and asks how the buyer sees himself using the vessel and what would make his wife and kids happy, she may discover that what the buyer really needs is a baby blue trawler. Boat brokering is a bit like matchmaking, and once one’s true desires are unearthed, then the search can start in earnest, wasting less time and energy for everyone involved. 3

A good broker should be willing to take time to ask questions and really understand the details of a boat he’s seeking or selling for a client, so he can manage expectations on both sides. “Most people will have already researched the boat online, so they have a rough idea of what’s for sale,” said Mik Maguire, current president of CYBA. “But the key is to know what equipment is included or excluded and what the Here’s how to get it ready. CYBA is considering creating a standardized rating system for vessel condition, which it hopes will bring clarity to the process. “Of the 21 complaints we logged at CYBA, half of them were because the broker didn’t communicate the excluded equipment or the condition wasn’t as described,” Maguire said. “If the broker says it’s a 10, then it must be a 10, or the mismanaged expectations will blow the deal.”

BROKER QUESTION: I know I need to make improvements to my boat before I sell it, but how can I tell if a fix is worth making? NOT ALL IMPROVEMENTS are created equally when it comes to a return on investment. Knowing the boat’s market segment and working with a trusted broker, a seller can determine if any improvements are needed. Brokers generally agree that if a seller has a limited budget, he should spend money on combating odors (e.g., holding tanks) and making sure the engine room and bilge are clean. John Murray and his wife, Karen, after selling their Carver 380, searched the West Coast for a used boat. Murray said odors emanating from compartments are a reflection of how well, or not, a boat is maintained. “When you walk on a vessel, you want it to smell good — that’s the bottom line,” he said. “I have a plumbing business. We have 15 vehicles, three tractors and two semis. All those put together don’t take the energy it takes to keep a boat safe and

maintained.” A seller should consider hiring a surveyor to do a presale inspection on the boat. While a survey isn’t cheap — $18 per foot or more — it can provide valuable insight on what needs to be fixed. A survey can also head off issues by disclosing potential problems early in the sales process. Jeff Keiser, owner of Keiser Marine Survey in the San Francisco Bay Area, said an inspection gives the seller a good starting point for deciding where to spend limited improvement dollars. “You end up with a 30- to 40-page report that goes through every single system and tells you every single problem,” Keiser said. “At the end of the report, I relist the problems in order of importance, so you have a good work list to go through.” Excerpted from the “Sweat the Details” feature in the August 2017 issue of Sea.

MOST OF US REMEMBER THE 2008 financial crisis. People watched their 401(k) accounts evaporate and many lost their job or their home. From that financial meltdown there is a small silver lining, especially for anyone currently selling a powerboat. New boat manufacturing languished for four years after the crisis, creating today’s shortage of quality used boats on the market. Folks thinking about putting a boat up for sale should follow these tips to get their boat in top sales shape. Folks looking to buy a used boat should be able to find quality late-model options after a bit of a drought.
Vanity Matters When it comes to getting the boat ready to sell, the reality TV marketing playbook is a good model: be visible. Carefully staged photos and drone videos help a boat stand out from the crowd. “There’s an old saying that applies in many industries: You only have one chance to make a good first impression,” said Bill King, a broker with Compass Point Yachts in Newport Beach, Calif. “It’s no different when it comes to selling a boat.” A boat that is free of personal items and clutter — especially in the cabin and cockpit — is key, not only for marketing photographs but also for when brokers show the boat to potential buyers. That means owners should ditch personal photographs, empty clothes from drawers and closets, and scrape off decals that didn’t come with the boat when it left the factory years ago. “What we try to sell is kind of the dream,” said Geoff Swing, a broker with Stan Miller Yachts in Southern California. “Where we run into trouble is helping a seller realize that what they need to do is stop showing their dream on their boat and allow that prospective buyer to walk up and start visualizing their dream.” Brokers encourage boat owners to use their powerboat while it’s for sale, which keeps the engines and systems operating. Swing tells his clients to keep their personal effects in bags that can easily be transferred to a car. Cockpits and cabins should be tidy, especially for photo shoots and buyer showings. Swing says he’s seen advertisements where the bed wasn’t even made. “You have to put in the time and do it right,” he said.

What are a few questions I can ask potential brokers to see if they possess the right kind of skills for today? A broker should understand the marketplace for the kind of boat a client intends to buy or sell, and she needs to know that segment inside out. She needs to have an excellent knowledge of pricing and have reach — familiarity with not just local but national and international markets. Does she have co-brokering agreements with other brokers in different regions? Does she have a good database of reputable shipyards, surveyors, loan institutions and title companies to make the selling/buying process go smoothly? Is the broker digitally savvy and does she use the latest marketing techniques, including direct email, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and advertising in print and digital boating publications?
