SHOW MONTH BOAT AFICIONADOS CAN SET their calendar by it. For the 40th consecutive autumn, a Duncan
McIntosh Co.-produced boat show will grace local docks. After 37 years in Newport Harbor — known for most of that time as the Lido Boat Show — the show moved to San Pedro in 2016 and this month will make its third run at Cabrillo Way Marina, from Sept. 20 through Sept. 23 near Ports O' Call Village. Now known as the LA Harbor Boat Show, the event will have everything the show has had in previous years plus some extras that will appeal to attendees of all boating interests, budgets and persuasions (power, sail, human propelled). Show managers say there will be more than 32,000 square feet of dry dock space for exhibitors, water taxi service for guests, land shuttle service from the parking lot near SS Lane Victory and sailing and standup paddleboard lessons for attendees who are willing to put in a little sweat equity — and possibly get wet — to get the most out of the show. As I write this, plans are afoot for a weekend craft beer garden hosted by San Pedro Brewing Co. and numerous gourmet food trucks. It should be called “Slake and Sate.” Live entertainment is in the works, too, so be sure to check LAHarborBoatShow.com for frequent updates. Visitors can expect blue skies, mild temperatures and light breezes at Cabrillo Way Marina, which doubles in size for the show, which is sort of a spectacle on its own. They’ll also encounter the newest yachts from local dealers and the best used boats on the market from dozens of California brokers. The picture is completed by the addition of all the booths for boating gear — beds, charts, engines, towing services, tenders, accessories, kayaks, standup paddleboards, yacht toys and more. Also celebrating its 40th year is the Boats Afloat Show (boatsafloatshow.com) on South Lake Union in Seattle. It runs from Sept. 13 through Sept. 16, so boaters in the PNW and California have yachts of reasons (sorry for that one) to be happy.

LEAD BOAT HATTERAS M90 PANACERA
LET IT E N T E R TA I N YO U Space, flow and technology create a boating panacea aboard the M90 Panacera. near-92-foot Hatteras M90 Panacera has it. Transom settee and table for six in the large cockpit? Check. Twin settees and a sunpad at the bow? Check. Open flybridge? Check. (Enclosing the flybridge is an option.) Balcony? Check. Wait, what was that last one? The M90 has an unexpected bit of outdoor space. In a first for Hatteras, part of the port hullside folds down and creates a balcony that hangs over the water and makes the 22-and-a-half-foot beam feel wider. It’s directly off the salon and through a sliding glass door, so it adds openness and airflow to the already large and open salon, whose big, frameless windows yield great views from any position. Forward on the main deck — ahead of a bulkhead that leaves room to either side for a companionway — is a galley and a wraparound dinette, both of which are bathed in light under a rather large skylight that creates an atrium of sorts. Belowdecks, four staterooms can accommodate six guests and the owners, whose full-beam amidships retreat includes a kingsize berth, multiple hanging lockers, twin sinks in the head and much more. Crew quarters for four are all the way aft. Flybridge seating is greater in the open version, but it’s abundant in both. The helm sits on the centerline in the enclosed version and slightly to starboard in the open. It includes three large displays, engine and thruster controls, a joystick for the twin diesels, and a noticeable lack of switches. That’s thanks to the proprietary HattCON ship management system, which integrates navigation, monitoring and other automated systems into a touchscreen interface that provides total control. Power comes from Caterpillar or MTU. Twin CAT C-32A 1,600 hp engines are standard, but owners can opt for 1,800 or 1,900 hp powerplants from CAT or MTU. Top speed with the biggest CATs is 24.7 knots, with a 22-knot cruise, at which range is 428 nautical miles with the 3,285-gallon capacity. Hatteras Yachts, hatterasyachts.com

SHIPLOADS OF STUFF In April 2018, Port of L.A. processed 705,536 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEUs) containers. At 20 feet long and 8 feet, 6 inches tall, that many TEUs stretch for 14,110,720 feet, or 2,672 miles, or from L.A. to Honolulu, with 100 miles to spare. Stacked atop one another, the tower of TEUs would reach 5,997,056 feet — 1,135 miles — tall. That’s 9,912 Space Needles, 413 Mt. Whitneys or 206 Mt. Everests.

MEXICO REPORT
By CAPT. PAT RAINS
PELAGIC PLAYGROUND OFF PACIFIC BAJA
With a wary eye, a good plan and the right boat, anglers can seize the big-fish opportunity September provides. DURING SEPTEMBER, THE OUTSIDE of Baja can be glassed off for days and provide
the most amazing fishing and gunkholing opportunities, maybe even a stop at Cedros Island. But it’s not for everyone. That’s because Sept. 10 to 20 is, statistically speaking, the height of hurricane season in Pacific Mexican waters — the maximum likelihood of getting clobbered. A whopping 98 percent of the Category 3, 4 and 5 storms (Saffir-Simpson Scale) occur during this narrow window. Whenever hurricanes are roaming up from Hurricane Alley on mainland Mexico, I recommend that slower and shorter-legged powerboats don’t start traveling up or down Baja. Why not? First, slower boats aren’t fast enough to outrun a hurricane barreling toward them at 15 knots or more. Even express boats that boast an 18-knot cruise speed can get bogged way down by the heavy seas and winds from a hurricane’s outer bands. Second, and apropos to Baja, boats that are fast enough usually don’t carry enough fuel to hurry to the nearest 360-degree shelter. Once a seagoing boat leaves
Ensenada, the next possible shelter with fuel is 250 miles away, in the harbor on Cedros Island, and past that, 275 miles from Ensenada, is the anchorage at Turtle Bay. After Turtle Bay, it’s 275 more miles down to Mag Bay and another 12 miles up inside the north end. These are possible shelters with fuel, not hurricane holes. By September, all Mexico boaters should be monitoring the National Hurricane Center’s five-day forecast: nhc.noaa.gov/ gtwo.php?basin=epac&fdays=5.
If the Baja coast is clear, the “big dogs” can play. Sizzling seawater temperatures of more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit creep up Baja from the tropics, bringing with them the biggest gamefish, billfish, and pelagic tuna and dorado — all primo targets for worldfamous tournaments with big prizes. Dozens of U.S. West Coast sportfishers will already have scored big in the Pelagic Triple Crown (June 3–5) or Bisbee’s East Cape tourney (Aug. 2–6). Dozens more are preparing to head down Baja for the Los Cabos Billfish tourney (Oct. 11–16), Bisbee’s Offshore (Oct. 14–16), Bisbee’s Black and Blue (Oct. 18–22) or the Tuna Jackpot (Nov. 2–5). A lot of these “big dogs” live year-round in the relatively safe inner harbors at Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, La Paz, Puerto Escondido and Mazatlan. For most recreational boaters — and anyone Continued on page 18.

Summer sportfishers usually want to stay topped off. Cedros Island, the fourth largest island in Mexico, is about halfway down Baja’s Pacific coast. Boaters who’ve already cleared into Mexico can stop in at the small
commercial fishing harbor on the southeast side of Cedros Island. To make arrangements to take on diesel — usually cheaper than at Turtle Bay — and book an overnight side-tie, contact Jose Angel Sanchez Pachecho, owner of Cedros Outdoor Adventures. As a ships agent, he has helped many recreational boaters over the years. Pachecho and his wife, Melanie Lamaga, have for years provided super-panga fishing charters for fly-down clients. Five years ago, they built Baja Magic, their two-story, eightsuite lodge, and four guest cabins atop cliffs just south of the harbor — the only sportfishing resort on the island. Jose has a degree in marine biology and helps protect the islands from poachers. Melanie is a gringa who runs the business end of everything. They can put together a custom package for adventuresome boat owners who want to do more (cedrosoutdooradventures.com). Let them know your boat details and arrival date, so they can line up a safe berth inside the harbor, fuel, provisions, etc. Now that Baja Magic is in full swing, they might squeeze anglers with their own boat into their dining room and prepare lunches for on board the fishing pangas. They also lead visitors on hiking trails to see the island’s indigenous flora, fauna and misnamed “cedars.”

BATTERY BOXES MUST BE VENTED BATTERIES ARE A NECESSARY ASPECT of every boat’s systems. They provide necessary power for starting engines and generators, and energy for a variety of electronics, lights, pumps, compressors and appliances. In addition to working reliably, batteries must also work with a certain uncompromising measure of safety. Coast Guard regulations for pleasurecraft require that “Batteries must be secured to prevent movement and the terminals covered to prevent arcing.” This means boat owners must use a battery strap to hold the batteries down and install a cover over the entire battery or at a minimum have a cap over each terminal. However, the regulation requires no provision for collecting spilled electrolyte. Because batteries typically contain an immense reserve of

potential energy — the average 12v starting battery is capable of providing more than 1,000 cold cranking amps (CCA) or nearly 13,000 watts — it’s important they be treated with the respect they are due. A short circuit in a battery cable will generate a massive amount of heat, not to mention acrid smoke, which can lead to a fire if the short occurs near combustible materials. In addition to possessing the potential to create a fire, batteries can cause an explosion. Under normal operating conditions, when flooded lead-acid batteries are charged, one of the byproducts of the chemical process is hydrogen gas, which is potentially explosive. If the gas is unable to leave the immediate vicinity of the battery and an ignition source is present, the result could be catastrophic. Unfortunately, what the Coast Guard requires is not enough protection. It’s better to adhere to what the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suggests in

ASK THE EXPERTS its Fire Protection Standard for Pleasure and Commercial Motor Craft and what the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) defines in its Standard for Storage Batteries. This voluntary standard requires “containment” of leaking or spilled electrolyte. That containment need not be 100 percent or a box per se; it can be a liquidtight tray. A box will protect a battery and
may contain the battery case, plates and electrolyte in the event of an explosion; however, if not installed correctly, it could be the cause of such explosion. The dangerous aspect of this scenario is that many battery boxes lack adequate ventilation to prevent a buildup of gas, but that shortcoming is not immediately apparent. Unless the box is vented in the

lid, at its highest point, it’s inadequate and potentially dangerous. Vents installed in the side of the box or even in the lid and where wires pass through are inadequate if gas could accumulate above them. AGM and gel batteries are not exempt from this requirement. If overcharged they, too, vent hydrogen gas.
Multimeter: Essential Tool
Few instruments perform as many tasks. BY DEANE HISLOP
A MULTIMETER is a tool that can easily detect electrical problems on a boat. Once reserved for engineers and electronic technicians, multimeters, sometimes referred to as “multitesters” or “voltage-ohm meters,” have come down in price and size, making them indispensable for boat owners who have a basic knowledge of circuitry. Multimeters are small, lightweight and battery operated, and they can test a wide variety of electronic components in many situations, making them an essential tool for anyone who needs to test and repair electronic circuits. There are two types of multimeters. Analog multimeters have been around for decades and can still be found at many marine, electronics and automotive stores. The new kids on the block are digital multimeters. They deliver greater precision, offering decimal point and even fractional readouts, and have the ability to auto-detect alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC). With all the numbers, dials and switches, a multimeter can be pretty intimidating, yet it’s worth the time to learn how to use one. Given their relative low cost, one should be in the toolbox of anyone who wants to do wiring diagnostics and repairs.

ASK THE EXPERTS is to think of it as a flowing river of power. There’s a certain volume of water (similar to electrical amperage, or amps) flowing with a certain potential force (like voltage) that encounters obstructions as it flows (resistance, measured in ohms). With this understanding, add these key concepts about electricity and multimeters: • Alternating current (AC) voltage:
The type of electricity available from shore power. • Direct current (DC) voltage: The type provided by batteries. • Resistance (measured in ohms): The lower the reading, the easier current (measured in amps) flows through circuit material. • Open circuit equals trouble: There is

high resistance from a broken connection, a faulty part or a switch that’s turned off. There isn’t a complete circuit path and no current will flow. • Closed circuit is good: It means a minimum of resistance is present because a connection or part is working. • Note: Check the pathway in the wiring or device being tested for any random loose wiring that’s touching the circuit being tested. Sometimes a broken connection (“short circuit”) can look like a closed circuit. Short circuits can harm humans, destroy equipment and start fires. • Continuity testing: Determines if an open, shorted or closed circuit exists.

While a boat is on the hard, a great use for the resistance function of the multimeter is to check the integrity of the bonding circuits and the sacrificial anodes, which protect underwater metal fittings from corrosion. For instance, if a through-hull has current running through it, it’s better to find out now than after it crumbles to dust and sinks the boat after launch. Set the meter dial to the ohm function and place the probes on any two pieces of equipment that connect to the boat’s bonding system (the green wire). If the reading is less than 1 ohm, all is well. Continue through the bilge, checking each leg of the bonding circuit. Next, place the probes on a zinc and the metal it’s intended to protect. A reading of 1 ohm or less means it’s OK.
MORE MULTIMETER TIPS
A multimeter for boat work should have an audible continuity alert, because owners often work in a tight area that makes it difficult to see the display but not to hear a beep or a buzz. Also, users can extend the length of the probes with simple jumper wires fitted with DC jacks or alligator clips.
SAFETY ABOVE ALL
Safety must always be practiced when working around electricity. Multimeters are tools that an impulsive and foolish person should avoid, because when it comes to electricity, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

CRUISERS 42 CANTIUS
The small end of the Cantius line gets a technology, design and accommodations refresh. was answered in the affirmative. I wondered if the Cruisers 42 Cantius would have the distinctive stainless steel bar across the polygonal hull windows, the boat model name elegantly etched into the stainless. It did. I suspected much more of the Cantius DNA would be found elsewhere in the boat. With that box checked, I wanted to see what other Cantius family features had made their way from the bigger models, the 60, 54 and 50, to the new smallest yacht in the Cantius line. There on the bow was one of them: the sun lounge. Two sunpads separated by a height-adjustable wooden table and a hatch create a two-person oasis at the bow. Each pad’s upper-body section is adjustable, from flat to a backrest-worthy 45 degrees or so, and each has two cupholders. This isn’t simply a cushioned pad thrown on the bow for effect. It’s a big-boat touch that has trickled down to midsize yachts. On the 60, the lounge is accompanied by a companion settee just aft. At the aft end of the 42 Cantius, two more boxes receive checkmarks. On the transom is a molded console that houses a grill and storage units big enough for fenders, wakeboards and ropes, and uninflated tubes, same as on the 50 Cantius. (The 54 and 60 move the grill into their larger cockpit.) Barbecue masters can use the sizeable swim platform as their base of operations and

move easily from there to the cockpit via the portside stairs. The platform submerges fully and has four built-in stairs that extend as the platform lowers into the water, so occupants can easily move from the cockpit to the platform for a dip. The second aft checkmark is in the cockpit, overhead — or not. A push-button extendable sunshade provides cover for folks on the settee, which runs across the transom and extends along the starboard bulwark, and it tucks neatly away when a Vitamin D bath is preferred. Twin tables provide food and drink support at the settee, and an ice-maker is tucked into the forward port corner.
Feelings of familiarity continued as I stepped through the open glass doors, which slide to port and lock in place to open two-thirds of the bulkhead and connect indoors with outdoors. A color scheme that employs white, black, cream and multiple shades of gray is stylish and modern, and is complemented nicely by the matte walnut wood of the sole, cabinets and furniture bases. The dinette table is high gloss. The L-shaped starboard dinette settee is raised a step, but with the doors fully open, it becomes part of the action in the cockpit, as it and the outdoor settee almost meet. Across from it is the galley. It’s more

compact than on its bigger brethren, by necessity, but its L-shaped countertop has prep room around a basin sink and a two-burner cooktop whose cover is cut from the countertop stone slab. Below the counter is storage, a microwave/convection oven and a refrigerator/freezer. Above are cabinets and a TV that can swing out and rotate. More cabinets are above the settee. Forward of the galley is a companion settee to the helm. Raised a step to maximize passengers’ ability to see out the windows, it can accommodate three people with their feet on the floor or one person who can use the forward-angled backrest to stretch out, chaise-lounge style, and face aft. Situated to starboard, under the aft-sloping windshield and the power sunroof overhead, is the helm. Pod-like in appearance, the helm console is a stylish mix of black and

At the base of a set of slightly off-center stairs is an atrium-like landing that’s well lit by natural light coming in through the windshield overhead. Access to both staterooms and the day head is off the landing, but which way should the owners go? Both staterooms are owner worthy. Forward, a centerline island berth provides a queen-size sleeping perch. A shelf runs nearly the length of both sides, for a convenient nightstand. Under-berth

drawers and two hanging lockers provide stowage, and there is an en suite head. Two hull windows and an overhead hatch supply light and air to the space. It’s a nice master suite for a 42-foot boat. Except… It might not be the master. Amidships is a full-beam stateroom. It features a sunken queen berth against the port hullside, a settee against the starboard hullside that’s long enough for most people to sleep on, and a good-sized hanging locker. A TV on an extension arm is in the aft starboard corner. Large hull windows to either side, both with a smaller opening section, add natural ambiance to the space, and the head, complete — like the forward head — with a standup shower stall, is en suite. Definitely the master, right? Well, that’s up to the owner. The amidships stateroom doesn’t have full standup headroom, except at the entrance, and the
en suite head is shared, via a landing door, making it the day head for guests. But those aren’t necessarily deal-breakers to its designation as the master. It’s the owners’ choice, and no matter what they choose, their guests are going to feel lavished — like maybe they put one over on their hosts.
It was from the pod-like helm, the boat’s only one, that I and the Silver Seas Yachts crew conducted our sea trial. Flush against the forward-leaning dash face are two Garmin 7612 displays, part of the Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit System, which has been optimized to interact with Volvo components and make everything available for display on the Garmin MFDs. Owners can opt for a Volvo engine display that can go on the dash face or the lower, flatter base, which also houses systems switches, a

compass, a stereo head unit and a cupholder. On a dash extension that runs against the cabin bulkhead, right at a comfortable height for the driver to rest his arm, are the engine throttles, the trim tab controls and the joystick. The important stuff. And the driver accesses all of this from a doublewide seat that slides forward and aft and has a substantial bolster. On test day, our 42 Cantius hit a top speed of 30.6 knots, at which point the twin 370 hp Volvo Penta D6 IPS500 diesels were turning at 3500 rpm and burning 41.5 gph. Driving it at that speed was fun. Hard-over turns resulted in a sportboat-like lean and tight circles that brought us back into our wake, which the boat handled with no trouble, splitting the sea with its deep-V entry and maintaining contact so there would be no hard landing. Trim tabs definitely improve the 42 Cantius’ performance and attitude. With no tabs, the bow rides a little high, but with them engaged, the holeshot was much more level and smooth. I never lost the horizon line with the tabs engaged, though my perspective from six and a half feet up might be slightly different than most operators.

Owners will find cruising at 18 knots, roughly 2800 rpm, to be easy and comfortable, but on test day we discovered better efficiency from 3050 to 3210 rpm, which yielded speeds of 22.5 and 24.4 knots respectively. Range at both speeds was 205 miles on the 300-gallon tank (with a 10 percent reserve factored in). Even at top speed, the 42’s range was right at 200 miles.
Seven years on, the Cantius line continues to evolve and mature, with a couple of first-generation models having been upgraded and replaced, including the original 48 and the 41, which the 42 displaced. Along the way Cruisers’ designers have combined window shapes — hull and superstructure — efficient use of space, effective flow, outdoor social zones and modern propulsion systems into a package that is distinct and identifiable. In doing so, they’ve created a sport cruiser with dayboat capabilities that can easily make a run to Catalina or one of the many islands in and around Puget Sound. And at least four people can spend the weekend aboard in comfort. But which stateroom will the owners choose?

RIVIERA 395 SUV
This Down Under utility cruiser has a lot of amenities packed into a midsize, easy-to-handle package.
THE SANCTUARY COVE INTERNATIONAL
Boat Show in Australia offers a special experience for marine enthusiasts willing to make the trek. Hosted every Memorial Day weekend in a resort village and marina adjacent to the Intercontinental Hotel, this world-class show provides a sneak peek of new Australian boat models destined for the U.S. This is precisely why I endured the 15-hour flight to attend this year’s show. Riviera is the largest Australian boat builder, and its factory in Coomera is right up the road (and the river) from Sanctuary Cove. Riviera started in 1980 and three

years later began exporting boats to America. This year two new Riviera models were introduced at the Sanctuary Cove show: the Riviera 72 Sports Motor Yacht, the largest boat in the Riviera line, and the Riviera 395 SUV, the smallest of the builder’s popular SUV series. I was able to test both vessels. The 72 is a large and impressive boat with powerful engines and a lot of accommodation space, but the 395 SUV really caught my attention because of how much it offers in a relatively compact size. Some swim platforms are simply an access point to the cockpit, but the Riviera
395 SUV maximizes space and utility, including taking full advantage of this area. A dinghy on Snap Davits is attached to the aft end, maximizing exploration possibilities and providing convenient and accessible storage. Across from the dinghy, built into the transom is a purpose-built pullout storage area designed to hold an outboard. Above this area and accessed by flipping up a lighted lid is a sink with a food prep area and a grill that can be used when a gas outboard is not stored in the transom. This setup makes it easy for occupants to converse with others seated in the cockpit or at the galley door. The platform is also equipped with a large stainless guardrail, so the grillmeister won’t step back from the grill and wind up in the water. For planned swimming outings, a foldout stainless swim ladder makes reboarding easy, and a hot and cold deck shower facilitates rinsing off the salt. Our test vessel had a fish-cleaning station and rod holders at the top of the aft rail that spin out when the dinghy is deployed. Up a step is an ample cockpit with optional foldout seating available on both sides. Along the forward bulkhead is an aft-facing seat that conceals a cooler compartment below. Its table is unique in that it turns athwartships for dining but can flip to face fore and aft to provide easier access, and it has stainless drink holders underneath for cocktail time. The seating,
The 395 SUV’s main cabin is set up equally well for entertaining guests on the hook or at the dock and for comfort while underway, because the galley, salon and helm are all part of an open layout that facilitates conversation and flow. Below, two staterooms can sleep five easily.
The Riviera 395 SUV might be the smallest in the SUV series, but it is a capable cruiser with a lot of amenities packed into a midsize, easy-to-handle package.

which is situated under the awning that extends the hardtop, has access, via a popup window on a hydraulic actuator, to the main dining area inside. Other cockpit amenities, standard and optional, include fishboxes beneath the sole, storage along the gunwales, an ice-maker and an IPS joystick docking station to starboard. The engine room is beneath the cockpit sole and is accessed via a hatch near the salon door. The equipment is thoughtfully laid out, and despite limited headroom, critical functions can be accessed.
Through the stainless and smoked-glass cockpit door, the galley is to starboard and up one step is the portside dining area. Forward of the dining spot is the double helm seat, and opposite it is a setee that is also raised, so all of the seating provides good visibility even while the boat is running. There is a TV on a lift under the windshield ahead of the starboard settee, which means passengers can’t watch TV while underway, but who would want to anyway? The layout works for entertainment

Throttles and the joystick are to Power port, along the window. They’re easy to reach, Twin Volvo Penta but some drivers might find the arrangement a D6 IPS500 diesels, bit awkward at first. I got used to the left-hand 370 hp throttles quickly, and the IPS joystick’s placePrice (base) ment just ahead of the throttles allows for easy $750,000 access during docking whether the operator is facing forward or aft. Visibility aft from the helm is very good, or the captain can use the cockpit station during docking. At a little less than 6 feet tall, I found the headroom adequate and the visibility good while standing, but since the helm is a step up from the salon, taller people might have to stand slightly to center to take advantage of the extra headroom the sunroof provides.
Acceleration was smooth as the twin Volvo Penta D6 IPS500s gently lifted the boat onto plane. There was no perceptible “hole” it had to dig out of, and the boat remained balanced while exhibiting only a slight bowrise. I live in the Pacific Northwest where logs are prevalent, so forward visibility is paramount, and it was excellent on the 395 SUV. We made reciprocal runs in the Broadwater, which is a protected waterway, because conditions outside the breakwater were severe. I am confident the boat would have been fine, but we didn’t want to risk covering the boat with salt spray, since prospective buyers were due to test it when we were done. It topped out at 31 knots, and the best fast cruise was 24 knots, where the 370 hp diesels were burning a combined 28.7 gph, yielding a little less than 1 mpg and a range of just more than 300 miles, which is roughly the range from 24 knots to 29 knots (about 3100 to 3500 rpm). Those are respectable numbers for this type of cruiser on a boat that is easy to handle, agile and fun to drive.
After running our numbers we had to head back, so I took the time to check out the cabins below. The master is forward and features a center island berth with convenient walkaround access, a full-length hanging locker, hull windows forward and an overhead hatch for ventilation. The head is in the corridor to starboard and features a

separate shower compartment complete with a bench and shelves for shampoo and soap. The guest cabin is full beam but with moderate ceiling height, since it runs under the salon. It is configured as three single berths but a filler can combine two of the singles into a double. When a couple is using this cabin, the third bed becomes a nice sitting area with better headroom. A hanging locker completes this cabin. As we slowed to idle speed in the calm waters, I made my way to the foredeck.
A companion seat opposite the helm is comfortable and directly in the social center of the main cabin.
Ample sidedecks with a raised gunwale and a stainless rail with a lower center cable offer plenty of outboard protection; a handrail along the cabin top is a nice safety feature. The foredeck has a large sunpad with bolsters aft that prop up the seats and triple drink holders on either side. This provides yet another congregating area. An anchor windlass and lockers are forward and feature room for fender and line storage.
Whether an owner is heading to Catalina for the weekend or cruising for a week or more in Mexico, the San Juan Islands or up into Canada and Alaska, the Riviera 395 SUV has a lot to offer. It has comfortable and well-laid-out accommodations for a couple or a family of four or five. It even has enough space for two couples in separate private cabins and enough room for kids to sleep in the salon when the galley table is converted to a berth. I wondered aloud what else Riviera had in store. It did not take long for Stephen Milne, Riviera’s brand and communications director, to explain that a flybridge version of this boat, the Riviera 39 Sports Motor Yacht, will be coming soon.

the fourth of the builder’s models I’ve tested, so I thought I knew roughly what to expect on test day: a sporty drive with good fuel economy, a luxury finish at a reasonable price and a whisper-quiet ride. In fact, I was pretty much prepared to see the same but bigger. However, with the 630, the French builder started anew, so the model, the third largest in the Prestige line and smallest of the Yachts Division, benefited from some good thinking and delivered all I expected and more.
THE PRESTIGE 630 IS
38 SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2018
As usual, the 630 is most easily boarded via the hydraulic swim platform, a teak beach whose flush-mounted stairs pop up when the platform is lowered and make coming up or down easy. The aft cockpit has a transom seat that’s fronted by a table with integrated stainless steel cupholders. An Isotherm refrigerator and optional ice-maker are tucked below a Corian countertop that is up against the aft glass door and window. For added shade, a 5-foot-long, 8-foot-wide electric fabric panel deploys outward toward the swim platform.
The salon and dinette in the main cabin are raised a step to give settee occupants a better view through the elongated windows. The light, muted color scheme of the main deck is continued in the belowdecks accommodations and heads. Outdoor social zones include (l. to r. middle row) the bow settee and forward and aft on the flybridge, whose hardtop includes a large sunroof.
An optional third steering station is in the cockpit, to starboard. With joystick control, it may be handy for backing into a slip but good visibility is only to the aft starboard corner, making the station’s appeal somewhat limited. Steps lead up both sides to sidedecks where the cabin top has been angled inward, providing more shoulder room to walk forward. A sunpad takes up most of the foredeck but here, Prestige rethought things. Although the pad is triple-wide, both sides have room for an unobstructed skylight, which bring light into the forward stateroom. A cabana at the head of the pad provides shade, and a four-seat forward-facing settee is at the foot. The settee
seatbacks can be lowered to make the sunpad even larger. From the cockpit, six steps lead up to a massive full-sized flybridge. Its molded fiberglass helm console sits to port and is positioned behind a windshield. Here, I found twin 16-inch MFDs, and with a bit of rearranging a third could be added. The Volvo Penta pod joystick is outboard and to the left, which initially seems counterintuitive for right-handers. In use, however, it does allow the driver to pivot outboard to see the length of the vessel as he docks and manages the stick SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2018 39
with his right hand. Nice. The entire starboard forward corner is dedicated to a sunpad large enough for a small army and a double seat that mirrors the one at the helm. From these seats aft, the flybridge is protected by the hardtop and its integrated fabric sunroof. An L-shaped settee is aft and wraps around a solid wood table to create a delightful alfresco dining area. An outdoor galley amidships includes a small Kenyon grill, a Dometic refrigerator and plenty of worktop space. The module lid opens to reveal a bottle holder — more good thinking. The 630 comes in a flybridge and a sport model. The latter calls for the flybridge to be shortened and pushed aft, which allows the addition of a sunroof in the salon but still accommodates a smaller outside social area and a second helm up top. Prestige’s signature divided floor plan has the master stateroom aft, which is accessed via its own staircase. on their own mini-superyacht — an oxymoron, yes, but the privacy and separation can make anyone feel special. Across from the galley and behind the starboard settee, eight steps lead down to said luxurious, full-beam master and its centerline queen bed and portside lounge. To starboard is a vanity desk, which is nice but a little too high to work at comfortably with a laptop. (I’d venture to say that, today, it’s more important to offer a comfortable work desk than a makeup application space.) Stowage capacity is exceptional in two large hanging lockers and drawers throughout. The headroom and the length of the master berth are both six and a half feet, for tall boaters’ comfort. As always, Prestige has added touches of luxury where it counts, including a 60-inch flat-screen TV and a backlit, fabric-covered headrest that provides a soft glow throughout the cabin. The master head to starboard has an
extra-wide sink integrated into the Corian counter and a compact shower stall. While the cabin stretches more than 16 feet across the full beam, it is a bit shorter fore and aft, as space seems to have been allocated to the accommodations in the forward section of the boat, including two guest cabins that are fully en suite. Of course, the VIP cabin in the bow runs a close second to the master. As mentioned before, plenty of light and air pour through the overhead hatch and skylights, but there are also hull windows and opening ports, so the cabin is light and breezy. Another vanity desk (same issue with its height) is to port, and the head is en suite; a separate door makes it the day head too.
Upstairs on the main deck, the galley is aft and to port, so it can easily serve the interior dinette and anyone in the cockpit. Cooks will appreciate the convenience of a ceramic three-burner Bosch cooktop and a separate Miele oven at knee level. A standup refrigerator/freezer combo is hidden behind matching wood paneling, and an optional Edgestar dishwasher is down low in the aft corner. A center island holds dishes, including tiny espresso cups in individual cutouts. Inboard of this island is a very useful leather-covered handhold, matched by another a few feet forward on the galley counter. The salon is one step up, which raises it enough so anyone seated gets a perfect, near-360-degree view through windows that were made longer to let in more light. Prestige has been enlarging the windows throughout the line, which is aesthetically more appealing and may offer the hidden benefit of putting everyone more at ease, even those prone to seasickness.
The helm, to starboard, is well laid out. Three 16-inch Raymarine gS165s MFDs sit on the dash behind the wheel at an angle that minimizes reflection off the windshield. The touchscreen displays also have a control panel that could be mounted a bit closer to the driver, so he can reach them from a seated position. The MFDs
are easy to see but the Volvo-Penta EVC display, which sits flat on the dash, has lots of reflection from above, so drivers might have to lean down for a closer look. Or just repeat the engine information on one of the MFDs. The pod joystick, bow thruster joystick and engine throttles are all outboard beneath the side window. Both port and starboard windows may be opened by switches at the helm. The VHF radio is outboard and forward, so it’s out of the way, but rocker switches at knee level create two issues: you can accidentally activate them with your knee, and you have to tuck your head down to see which one is which. Two cupholders are inboard of the wheel, which is handy but it would be nice to add a dedicated smartphone pocket to keep things organized. The dash is covered with a matte paint that cuts down on glare, and the well-placed footrest and double helm seat offer driver comfort on extended trips.
The Bayport Yachts crew — David Schaefer and Erik Mayol — and I conducted our run up the coast from San Diego Bay to Newport Harbor at a cruising speed of 22 knots (2200 rpm), with a light breeze of 10 to 12 knots on a flat ocean (1-foot chop) — a very pleasant couple of hours. At the yacht’s cruising sweet spot, right at 22 knots, the Volvo diesels achieved 0.37 mpg, and with 713 gallons of fuel that gave us an approximate range of 235 nautical miles, with a 10 percent reserve. At 2000 rpm our speed was 17.7 knots and fuel burn was 46 gph, for a range of close to 250 miles. At wide-open throttle, slightly more than 2500 rpm, we just nudged 28 knots, at which point the IPS950s were burning a combined 75 gph. Before we left San Diego, we tested the time to plane on the flat waters of the bay — a neat 8.3 seconds. Not that the conditions warranted it, but we ran with the Seakeeper activated and the ride was smooth as silk. I always start a test in the engine room, so I completed a thorough walkthrough before we took off, while the engines were still cold. On the 630, the engine room is accessed via the swim platform. The exterior door opens to optional crew quarters — twin berths and
a small head — that also serve as the walkthrough to the machinery space. Twin 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950s are coupled with pod drives, a combination that delivers better fuel economy and greater performance with less horsepower and overall weight. A 21.5 kw Onan genset is on the centerline forward, above the optional Seakeeper gyrostabilizer. To either side are twin fuel tanks with sight gauges and dual Racor filtration systems. There’s excellent access to all systems except the pod drives, which are reached via the crew quarters. We made ourselves comfortable at the helm for the 90-mile run and I noted, once again, how quiet the Prestige line is — hardly a creak to be heard, even at speed. The hard-chine hull has a deep entry but then tapers off to a 16-degree deadrise aft and was designed to accommodate Volvo Penta IPS pod drives. Despite the 630’s ample proportions, the pods will make anyone a pro at docking, keeping station while waiting for a bridge to open or when picking up a mooring.

The Tug of Alaska
Second try — and third boat — is a charm for one couple whose heart was set on Sitka. BY WILLIE STARK
In 2005 Herb and I took our motorhome from our residence in Longview, Texas, on a tour of western Canada and several places in Alaska, including a catamaran ride from Skagway to Juneau. We were interested in the history of the state and wanted to see more, including Sitka, which we missed because we weren’t able to get our motorhome across the water to Baranoff Island, where Sitka is located. Years later we traded in our boat, a Ranger Tugs R-27 — our second Willie’s Tug, which we trailered from Texas to the Pacific Northwest and back — for another Ranger, this one an R-31, our third Willie’s Tug. We leave this one in the PNW and don’t trailer it when we return to our southern home for the winter. The first year on our new boat, we planned an Alaska trip, but it didn’t work out. We spent from May to September cruising Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands and the Broughtons, but still had a burning desire to visit history-rich Sitka, so on June 6, 2015, we tried again. Our friend Ray, along with his malamute, Lilly, was excited to buddy boat with us aboard

Nudibranch. Sadly, we had lost our golden retriever, Dr. Jake, the year before, so we were to be a two-boat, one-dog flotilla. We also invited any other boater friends to tag along. Our thrilling four-month trip up the Inside Passage went something like this.
We leave the familiar waters around the Broughton Islands and spend the night at Port McNeil. At 5 a.m. the following day, we head into Queen Charlotte Strait. Herb sets the speed at 12 knots as we make our way past Cape Caution. The winds are light, as predicted, and are supposed to stay that way until late afternoon. We begin to get ocean swells, 2- to 3-footers, in the strait and we still have one and a half hours before we get to Cape Caution. We increase our speed to 14 knots, which smooths out some tops, and I look forward to less rough water after rounding the cape. Ray says later that he wished his boat had stabilizers here.
Six days later we go through Watt Narrows from Grenville Channel and definitely depend on the instruments to guide us into Baker Inlet, where we will anchor. Watt Narrows has terrific current and a whirlpool, and we have trouble seeing from a distance where the entrance is. When he sees the whirlpool at the very beginning of the narrows, Herb gives the wheel a real workout to maintain direction. He has to increase the speed a bit, and all is good. A real thriller today!
Our next exciting anchorage is three days later in Punchbowl Inlet. On our way there we get photos of New Eddystone Rock, a 230-foot rock that sits on a partly visible shoal in the middle of Behm Canal. Atop it is a small forest of healthy evergreen trees. Willie’s Tug and Nudibranch circle around to take photos of each other by the rock. Continuing north in Behm Canal, we turn into the entrance to Punchbowl Cove and I am spellbound. The scenery is magnificent. Steep walls and many, many cliffs — in front of us, on both sides — are all around us. It is truly a bowl. The granite mountains rise dramatically from the ocean floor. Herb drops the hook in 70 feet of water, letting out 120 feet of rode. Happily, we feel the anchor grab on the rocky bottom, but unhappily, it lets go. Repeatedly. Not going to set it right here. He moves out a bit deeper toward the center of the bowl and lets out more rode, gradually backing up until the boat moves no more. We are home for the night. Because it is so steep here, he stern-ties for the first time this season. We are in 90-foot-deep water and just a short distance from shore. We expect a tide swing of 16 feet tonight, so we will watch our lines carefully. This is quite a feat to anchor on a steep wall. And how happy we are to hook on this rocky bottom.
We take advantage of a long day’s cruising to our anchorage in Helm Bay to replenish our freshwater tank, utilizing our six-gallon-perhour water-maker, since the literature says much of the water available at the docks in this area is not treated. After Willie’s Tug’s tank is full, Herb turns the Y valve to divert new product to a portable container we’ll share with Ray. We are the only two boats enjoying this flat, calm canal. Then suddenly, as we exit the north end of Misty Fjords … orcas! There are two groups, one on either side of the canal. One pod? Ray reports seeing a male and a small orca. I am filming so fast I don’t stop to think what I am seeing. This is awesome. Unbelievable! Our location is 55 degrees 57 minutes 39 seconds north, 131 degrees 20 minutes 6 seconds west, in Behm Canal. Our show lasts 16 minutes, from 11:17 to 11:33 a.m.
Travel guidebooks promise that we will see lots of wildlife, and one point of interest is Anan Bear and Wildlife Observatory near Wrangell, Alaska. We cruise near the U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station and three rangers come out on deck to greet us. We inquire about seeing the bears. “Sure,” one says. “The season doesn’t open until tomorrow, but without a guide you may go in free today. Anchor near the crab buoys and dinghy around the bend to the trailhead. Be sure to make a lot of noise as you follow the path.” Finally we arrive, anticipation heightened, and see the black bears fishing for salmon. I am not sure how many we see, since they come and go, but at least three different bears delight us in the space of minutes. As the salmon jump or swim up the falls to spawn, the bears grab one in their mouth, scurry off to their den, devour it in seconds and come back to fish for another. It is so cool to see them stick their neck out to catch a fish, miss it and try again. Ravens and eagles perch nearby and wait for crumbs. Returning to the boat we continue our cruise. We find a floating dock, and kayakers around a campfire on a grassy hill invite us to tie up for the night.
Herb whispers excitedly the next morning, “Willie! Come see! A brown bear is on the shore across the bay from the kayaker’s cabin.” I can’t believe this. How much more awesome can this trip get? “And bring the camera,” he adds. We sit and watch the bear for half an hour. It eats its way down the shoreline, now and then ducking into

The Starks’ buddy boating friend Ray and his dog, Lilly, take a break from life on the boat. A strong current and a whirlpool didn’t deter Willie’s Tug’s crew from traversing Watt Narrows (far left) to get into Baker Inlet. During long legs of the trip, the Starks put their water-maker to use (left).

the brush for delicious berries. He devours the leaves and limbs of a blueberry bush. Then we see him go for three clusters of devil’s club berries. The berries are such a beautiful bright red, and I enjoy seeing them in the binoculars, but I’m happy the bear gets to have them for breakfast. I imagine the bear saying, “Let’s see now, I need to go around these fallen trees to search for more food to help me make it through hibernation this winter.”
Sea stars (top left), eagles, whales and bears were just some of the wildlife the Starks encountered. New Eddystone Rock (top right) makes a cool backdrop for a photo.
After a pleasant night’s sleep, we time our transit of Wrangell Narrows. Several crab-trap buoys mark the entrance to this skinny 22-mile long waterway. The locals call it one of the most difficult stretches in southeast Alaska, which becomes more treacherous as tides rip up and down its shores. Large cruise ships cannot navigate it, and the largest vessels that can are barges and the 418-foot M/V Columbia, the largest Alaska Marine Highway ferry. Those vessels can

only go at high tide, which has 20-foot swings. A guidebook tells us about approximately 60 lights and buoys that mark both sides of the shipping lane. Going in, we begin to see the many red and green markers directing us off rocks, guiding us through the turns and keeping us in the deep channel. We encounter a more narrow stretch and are glad we aren’t meeting M/V Columbia here. Next we come to a set of range markers, then another set; we keep them lined up and dodge sticks. Several large boats pass us in the narrow channel. Finally, I say to Herb, “We made it!” We have traversed Wrangell Narrows and move into the channel as it widens. Now that was an exciting part of our cruise! Nearing the confluence of Frederick Sound and Stephens Passage, which leads to Juneau, we get another surprise: humpbacks. Suddenly they are everywhere — both sides of the boat! They blow, dive and give us flukes. Thrilling!
I see Sitka ahead and call the marina for slip assignments; luckily they have space, even though the slips are at the north end. Eager to see more animals, we head to Fortress of the Bear near Sitka, where orphaned cubs are given a home, nurtured, fed and cared for, all in a natural habitat. They are happy and playful. Sadly the day comes when we must cruise south toward Texas. As we motor down the side of Baranof Island we see more orcas, glaciers, humpbacks and flukes, as well as eagles in flight.
On our route home is Kake, Alaska. We arrive on a Friday and are lucky to find space available at City Dock. Several skiffs are tied here and there at the backside of the floatplane landing. Willie’s Tug is home for the night. Around noon on Saturday a kind fisherman returns from fishing and offers us a halibut fillet —what luck — which we gladly accept. He tells us to keep our camera handy to capture the eagles that arrive to devour the trimmings he throws on the floatplane dock, after cleaning his catch for the day. He says we will see more eagles here at one time than any other place. After dinner we are thrilled to hear the songs of the many eagles as they fly in for the treats left on the dock. We sit quietly inside the boat so as not to scare them off and see one pick up the halibut skin with his talons. I take a photo that shows the motion of his feet, as he tears the flesh off the carcass. He stands still a few seconds with his foot still on the halibut, turns, checks his surroundings and begins to peck away at his dinner. Three others, one of which appears spotted, soon join him. I am not sure if the spotted one is an eagle. I later learn it is a young eagle. After consuming the fish, they stay for a few more minutes before they fly away. Sunday’s weather prediction for Frederick Sound shows strong winds, so we stay in Kake another day. Seas are fairly calm here this
morning, but that will change in the afternoon. Herb asks the fisherman from the previous day — Timothy, we learn — if people dock boats where Willie’s Tug is, as we see the inside of the dock is filled with skiffs. He replies that it is a public dock. “No,” Herb says, “I’m asking if anyone regularly has this space on a daily basis, as we see some skiffs are rafted.” Timothy laughs. “I do,” he says. He always rafts to a boat that never goes out, and we have noticed his boat is larger than the others here. Plus, he would have an easier time and a shorter walk up the dock each day with his fish if he had his regular place, where we are. We all laugh at this and Herb tells him we will give the space back soon. We have made a friend.
Do we go or do we stay? Tonight there is a bit of chop and wind to bounce us. Our reason for the cruise to Alaska was to get to Sitka and immerse ourselves in its history, beginning with the Russians, which we did. Then fate leads us to Kake, where we have a rich experience learning about this Tlingit village and the wonderful, friendly, hardworking people we meet. On Monday a touring boat anchors nearby, and Herb helps hold its dinghy to our dock, as the passengers alight for their walkabout. The updated marine forecast confirms Tuesday would be a day for us to cast off and continue our cruise south. We hear the predictions: wind speed of 15 knots, 3-foot seas, rain likely. Fifteen knots is no problem, 3-foot seas are not a problem and we don’t mind the rain, because we have windshield wipers. The issue we see is getting off the dock with the wind blowing us against it. So on Tuesday we cannot believe our eyes when we see Timothy coming down the ramp at 7 a.m., because he is usually gone by 4 a.m. to fish for several hours. We hurry to the cockpit to talk to him and he tells us he will not fish today; he is only checking on his boat and will spend time with his wife, Margo. He asks our plans, and Herb tells him we would leave if we could get out of this corner without being pushed by the wind and current against the small boat in front of us. Timothy says he can hold us off the dock, so he and Herb plan the strategy: release the bow line and hold the stern in until Herb can point Willie’s Tug out into the channel. As I pull in the stern line, we say goodbye and I quickly grab my camera for one last photo, but it rebels. We have only a memory of his kind, smiling face. The last thrill on our first trip to Sitka is getting away from the dock in Kake, and we hold Kake in our hearts.

While many yacht owners choose to use a PWC as their dinghy, the Azimut 77S lets its owners have a PWC and a jet tender.

PWC advancements have more boaters eyeing them as yacht tenders. By Lenny Rudow There was a time when personal watercraft were seen as the mosquitoes of the yachting scene, buzzing around noisily while serving no function short of entertaining the rider alone, but those times are long gone. PWCs have developed to become less intrusive and more useful, and many boats and yachts carry one or more aboard to serve as both a source of fun and as a tender. SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2018 51
FeatureYachtPWCsr.qxp_Layout 1 7/26/18 5:40 PM Page 3
Kawasaki’s top-end 310 Jet Ski models come with Jetsounds speakers and audio systems, 56 gallons of storage and a swim platform. When it comes to utilizing PWCs as tenders, even 40-footers such as the Formula 40 Performance Cruiser can handle them.
Upward Utility Increased utility is one of the more important PWC advances in recent years. Virtually all modern models can handle multiple passengers, and some models boast whopping-big stowage compartments to haul gear or provisions. The Kawasaki Ultra 310LX, for example, can haul 56 gallons worth of goodies. Think about that for a second: 56 gallons is about the same amount of room as is in one of those big 200quart marine coolers. Shuttling groceries for the week from the mainland to a mooring? Not a problem. Sea-Doo has taken a different tack to boost utility. Its newly introduced LinQ system is composed of add-on modules that lock onto the 52 SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2018
back of the PWC (they are compatible with a number of Sea-Doo models) and in some cases can even be stacked one on top of another. There are add-on four-gallon fuel tanks, dry stowage compartments and coolers. Or, if additional fun is the goal, as opposed to those more Spartan functions, owners can leave all that stuff aboard the big boat and instead drop in the LinQ retractable ski pylon. Another way PWCs have enhanced their usability is with expanded range. While once we thought of PWCs as useful only for short jaunts, many of today’s models have cruising capabilities. The Yamaha VX Cruiser is a great example. It carries 18 and a half gallons of fuel and has a range beyond the 100-mile barrier. We’re not
suggesting a yacht owner anchors 50 miles from the harbor before making any round trips, but with that kind of capacity he could make an extended cruise and use the PWC over and over again, without having to refuel or carry extra gasoline on a diesel-powered yacht.
Creature Comforts Comfort boosts are another common theme on the newest PWCs. During the past decade, seat development has been prominent. Seats have grown larger, to accommodate up to three riders, and narrower, to provide riders with a more natural riding position. Now they’re being manufactured with heat-resistant materials too. New handlebar designs with more adjustment

points — up to 18 in one case — are also having an impact on comfort. And on top of all that, high-end models have “smart” features such as cruise control, digital multifunction displays and no-wake modes. Swim platforms have become de rigueur on many larger models. The Sea-Doo GTX Limited now boasts a platform large enough for two people to relax on and can be padded with faux teak. Better yet, the back of its seat can be shifted aft onto the platform to create a “social area” aboard a PWC — something I’ve certainly never seen before. In a nod to modern needs, watertight phone compartments are being introduced on new models. And yes, they do come equipped with
USB ports for charging.
Tunes Enhanced entertainment is part of the game too, with many of today’s PWCs featuring a stereo. In the past, riders turned to headphones for music, but that can be dangerous, because the headphones can block outside noises, such as a boat’s horn. Cranking a stereo certainly could have a similar effect, but it isn’t nearly as complete, and a pair of 20-watt channels isn’t overwhelming in the first place. Kawasaki hit the right notes with its Jetsound audio system, which it introduced in 2014. It includes dual 30watt waterproof speakers that are integrated under the mirrors, a two-channel 40-watt amp, SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2018 53

inch built-in speakers on many models. The system is driven by 100 watts of power and a Bluetooth connection to a cellphone, which sits protected in a dedicated waterproof, shockproof compartment that includes a USB charging port. An external unit includes controls for volume, playlists, and functions.

a head unit built into the handlebars, and stowage cases for a USB memory stick and an iPhone. Just last year JL Audio introduced its “SlamPak” system, designed to fit Yamaha Waverunners. It consists of a pair of 6½-inch coaxial speakers, an 8.8-inch subwoofer and a 500-watt four-channel amp that mates with a Bluetooth receiver to play the operator’s chosen music wirelessly from his device. While this system isn’t integrated into the PWC itself, like with Kawasaki, it’s easily added to 2013 and newer models and has significantly more audio oomph. The one downside is that it costs $2,559. Beginning in 2017, Sea-Doo also went down the integrated route by including a pair of 6½54 SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2018
So can a PWC really serve as a tender, particularly on some of today’s smaller yachts, on which space and weight may be at a premium? You bet. In fact, this option has become so popular that many boat builders plan for it. Most modern PWCs are light enough to be handled by davits — even the beefiest models top out around 1,000 pounds, and some models are as light as 400 pounds and are barely 9 feet long — but increasingly, power swim platforms (hydraulic or electric) serve as the most convenient storage and launch points. “We used to use a boom system for tenders and PWCs,” said Scott Smith of Formula Yachts, “but the reliability wasn’t always perfect. The Latham hydraulic lifts we use today, however, are excellent. Not only are they extremely reliable, they allow you to lower the entire swim platform all the way into the water. It can be an expensive option, but it just couldn’t be any easier to use, and people absolutely love it.” Smith said that on the 40 Performance Cruiser and the 45 Yacht, buyers choose this option more often than not. The Latham lift he mentioned can handle up to 1,600 pounds, so the weight of a PWC is a non-issue. As he said, it can be expensive — Formula prices the option at around $38,000 on the 40 Performance Cruiser and $45,000 on the 45 Yacht — but its popularity proves that most people feel it’s worth the expense. In many cases on larger yachts, PWCs can be stored in a garage. While this may add a bit of complexity to the launching procedure, it also
keeps the PWC protected and out of the weather. On yachts that are bigger still, other options become possible. On the Astondoa Century 110, for example, there’s a garage of sorts up on the bow deck dedicated purely to housing a pair of PWCs. The roof swings up on hydraulics, and davits are used to swing the PWCs overboard for launching. Ben Masonheimer of Silver Seas Yachts in Newport Beach, Calif., said that having a yacht with a garage expands an owner’s options in a number of ways. “We’ll commonly see people put a more traditional jet tender on the swim platform and a PWC in the garage,” he said, “so they have the best of both worlds. But sometimes people opt for two PWCs.” Masonheimer said the main factor that could limit one’s ability to keep a PWC in a garage is overhead clearance. On some models the handlebars may sit too high. He also pointed out that no matter the arrangement an owner chooses, the swim platform has to be cleared first in order to launch from a garage.
Downsides There will be, naturally, some downsides to utilizing a PWC as a tender. As I mentioned earlier, stowage capacity on PWCs is much better than it once was, but obviously it’s still more limited than what a traditional tender has. Passenger capacity is also rather limited, with a two- or three-person maximum. And wet shoes can be expected, so footwear planning is essential. Then there’s expense to consider. While a small inflatable with an eggbeater outboard can be had for a few thousand dollars, PWCs do tend to cost more. They range from just less than $5,500 for one of Sea-Doo’s Spark models to more than $16,000 for a top-of-the-line, fullsized luxury PWC. Add to that the cost of fuel and maintenance — a modern PWC is quite a bit more complex than a simple dinghy and that fact will be reflected in service costs over the years — and choosing this option makes for one expensive tender. On the flip side, few who get into boats and yachts plan to avoid certain expenses. And given the added capabilities (read: fun!) a PWC aboard offers, many boaters feel that the tradeoffs are well worth the advantages. To the Web

Listen up! Canvas fabricators really want boat owners to know these 7 things. By Zuzana Prochazka
56 SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER
FeatureEnclosures.qxp_Layout 1 7/30/18 8:54 AM Page 2
Consider that a flybridge enclosure on a 50-foot sportfisher can run anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000. With that kind of expense, it would be advantageous to have a friend in the business to guide one through the process before, during and after a new enclosure is created. Canvas fabricators know things boaters don’t, and they’re willing to share their trade secrets — seven of them, at least — so enclosure projects run smoothly and one’s money is well spent. All boat owners have to do is listen. Or read, in this case.
This is when the uninitiated should take the advice of a fabricator, because they know of what they speak. “When it comes to design, the big issue is finding the balance between what a boater wants and what makes sense,” said Juan Castro of Castro Canvas Designs in Oxnard, Calif. “Education is really the biggest challenge.”
Listen to Tech Talk If talk of keder welts in tracks and radius curves on polycarbonate windows makes your eyes glaze over, then tech talk on canvas design and fabrication may not be your thing. But that’s what experience sounds like. Listen, because while some of your initial choices seem great on paper, they may not work in practice.
Well-done flybridge enclosures, such as on this Carver C52, make judicious use of zippers and enhance the lines of the boat.

Good canvas fabricators can help boat owners design enclosures fit for (clockwise from top) an Aquila catamaran, a Cutwater 302, a Mikelson 57, an Ocean Navigator and a Horizon V68.
Castro Designs
The cleaner and less obtrusive the design, the more thought and experience went into it. Fabricators are the experts, so let them guide the project. For example, zippers in corners are a bad idea not only because they obstruct visibility but also because these are highstress areas where zippers can fail. Panel connections should be discreet and windows should wrap around corners in a nice radius, to prevent blind spots. The structure should avoid pooling and must shed water easily. It should be able to tolerate boat speeds or winds of 25 knots or more, and it should never sag, pull or even squeak when the boat moves, because a noisy cover will drive everyone crazy. Sometimes extra panels have to be added. The height of top-to-bottom tall 58 SEAMAGAZINE.COM SEPTEMBER 2018
panels on trawlers, for example, can cause flapping and noise and can even rip out fasteners in high winds or underway. Breaking panels in half and creating additional attachment points may deliver a different aesthetic, but it will be more functional in the long run. The more “clear” or window material there is in the design, the hotter the enclosure will get due to the greenhouse effect, so plan to install plenty of openings. Good design also means the lines of the enclosure will compliment the lines of the boat. “The addition should not be too tall or boxy, and the top should have a crown so water channels away,” said Dan Loggans of Harbor Custom Canvas in Long Beach, Calif. A good design should allow boat owners to close or cover the structure without having to reach around awkwardly or hang outside the boat to zip, cover or open anything. Enclosures are built top-to-bottom and front-to-back and should be completely functional from the inside. “It’s backwards from a house, where the walls go up before the roof goes on,” Castro said. “Sometimes customers want to save money by just replacing the sides — curtains and windows — and keep the top. But maybe two years later, when they want to replace the top, it’ll be a problem matching the new sides. Replace the whole structure at the same time, so you’re not working backwards.” Beware of being wed to the original or current design. Replacing an enclosure is the best time to ask if there’s a better way
to do things. “I have a professional responsibility to share better design with my customers, but they can be stuck on what they’re used to,” Castro said. “That’s when I ask them about their pet peeves and soon we’re talking about improving on what came before.”
Zippers Are a Tradeoff To zip or not to zip? That is the question. Fewer zippers mean a cleaner look and better visibility. Each zipper can block up to four inches of sightlines, so they must be used discreetly. Zippers add expense in terms of materials and labor, and they need frequent rinsing and lubrication to keep them working. Zippers should be opened and closed at least once a month, even those that aren’t used often. “It may seem like a pain to work the zippers on every trip, but if you don’t you’ll end up paying me $60 to $80 to come out and replace one that’s frozen due to lack of use,” Castro said. That said, zippers do the grunt work of enclosures and they’re the little parts that make a big difference. Not using zippers to add ventilation or communication cutouts or break up tall panels will lead to general unhappiness. “Sometimes twisties are a better option to attach a Bimini top to a side curtain, because zippers don’t always meet, especially if the cover was taken off for washing,” Castro said. “But in general, zippers can add to a clean aesthetic in a multipanel design.”
The Devil Loves Details It’s the little things that make projects big. For example, a flybridge enclosure attached to a hard Bimini top may seem quick and easy, but consider the details. Rocket launchers and rod holders eat up time and labor, because each must be fitted, trimmed, sewed and fastened somehow. The same goes for smaller cutouts around the helm, electronics or stairs. Ventilation is key and cannot be sacrificed to whimsical design. A U-shaped zipper cutout in a big expanse of semi-rigid polycarbonate window might not be the most aesthetically pleasing option, but it allows air inside and everyone will appreciate that. A hermetically sealed environment will not work for human comfort or the
FeatureEnclosures.qxp_Layout 1 7/30/18 9:05 AM Page 4
well-being of the boat. Good air circulation will minimize mold and mildew growth when the boat isn’t in use, especially in areas such as the Pacific Northwest.
New Is Easier (& Faster/Cheaper) This may seem self-evident but new boats are easier for fabricators to work on than older ones. Today, boat manufacturers take into account that people will probably add a dodger or a flybridge enclosure, and often they’ll add a molded-in track or a raised bit of deck to help with attachment points. “Builders now know that owners will be personalizing their boats according to climate and their preferences, so they take that into consideration,” Castro said. “On older boats, we sometimes have to add teak or starboard lips for tracks or fasteners, and the winches tend to be in random places that get in the way of a clean design. All these modifications take time and
money, so owners of older boats need to build that into their expectations.”
Don’t Phone in Maintenance I’ve already alluded to what an expensive proposition ignoring an enclosure’s zippers can be. But there are other maintenance must-dos that fabricators wish their customers would carry out. For example, equalizing UV exposure will add years to an enclosure — fabric, snaps, zippers, windows and all — so turn the boat around in the slip periodically. Covering windows can double their lifespan but handling soft or rigid windows on cold mornings can damage them, since the materials are more brittle at lower temperatures. Always ask for recommendations on how to clean and polish your materials. Most manufacturers, including Stamoid and Sunbrella for fabric and Strataglass and Makrolon for windows, recommend approved cleaners to keep the material
warranty in effect. Never use Windex, Rain-X, Simple Green, Fantastic or citrusbased cleaners, because these chemicals break down the plasticizers that keep windows from cracking, peeling and yellowing. Most material care will involve washing with water and a mild soap and drying and polishing with a soft cloth or mitt. Don’t use paper towels, because they are abrasive and leave scratches.
Some tips include: • Brush off any loose dirt on the fabric portions and wash it with mild soap and water. • Rinse thoroughly and don’t let the soap dry on the material. • Don’t put canvas in a dryer and don’t dry clean it, which will disrupt some of its added properties, such as UV inhibitors and waterproofing. • Avoid using a pressure washer.

Be Wary of Design Trends Enclosures today go well beyond just white and blue as boaters lean toward lighter colors in fabric: beiges, grays and medium blues. Despite the fact that a dark-colored top will get hotter in the sun due to the opacity of the dye, darker colors stand up better to UV rays while lighter colors break down faster. Per Loggans, lighter colors stay cooler and blend better with the boat by not drawing the eye to a lot of unexpected color, but they tend to mildew more, so owners need to choose the tradeoff they can live with and not follow the fashion trends.
Do Some Homework All canvas shops are not created equal, but most boaters will spend more time deciding which color to use than which fabricator to hire. Word-of-mouth recommendations are best, so ask dock neighbors for referrals. Get plenty of cur-
rent pictures of a shop’s work and make sure the people who created the projects in the photographs are still working there. Call recent references and ask about the quality of their experience. Get a detailed and itemized estimate and discuss any potential cost overruns before they happen. Most fabricators will take a deposit, which could be up to 50 percent, up front, and that’s the time to ask about their satisfaction warranty. How long after delivery do they allow customers to ask for adjustments as they learn to live with a new enclosure? Ninety days should be long enough to know if the design will work. Good canvas shops have a wait time, some up to four to six months. Initially, a fabricator may come out, take measurements and provide an estimate, but that doesn’t mean he will be able to start right away. When he’s ready, take the time to refresh everyone’s memory about what will be the desired outcome. That’s also the time to make any changes, because once the material is ordered and cut, there are

no more adjustments — well, there are, but they will be very expensive. “Find a good canvas shop with an updated website, lots of pictures and lots of referrals,” Castro said. “Pick the guy who is prompt about calling you back, which sounds strange, but many don’t.” Finally, get a clear definition of the delivery date of the final product, so the project doesn’t drag on. “We want happy customers,” Castro said, “so we guarantee a finish time. We even offer a 5 percent discount for every week that the delivery date is missed.” Good work doesn’t come cheap, but owners willing to plunk down the kind of cash enclosures demand should get what they want and have it provide shelter for many years to come.

HAVEN WITH A VIEW
An idyllic anchorage brimming with natural beauty and tranquility, Mound Island is like a live landscape painting. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP
SITTING ON DECK ABSORBING THE warm summer sun, we couldn’t imagine a more peaceful anchorage than the one situated between Mound and Harbledown islands to the west of Blackfish Sound, in the Broughton Archipelago. Framed by fir trees dripping with Old Man’s Beard, small fish are breaking the mirror-like surface and Mt. Thomas stands proudly to the east.
DROP THE HOOK The approach is from the east and unobstructed with the exception of the charted islets and rocks near shore to starboard. The anchorage is well protected from summer westerlies. When Arlene and I arrived earlier in the day, only three boats rested on the hook, so there was plenty of room for Easy Goin’ in 15 to 40 feet over a good-holding sand and shell bottom. We like to set the hook as deep in the bay as possible, so we can keep an eye out for wildlife in the small meadows at the west end of the anchorage.

E X P L O R AT I O N After an alfresco lunch we launched the dinghy and headed out for a few hours of exploration. The white shell beach on the west end of Mound Island made a perfect dinghy or kayak landing spot. Higher up, rich black soil speckled with white shell and bone fragments form a midden, indicating many thousands of years of prior use. Archaeological research has shown that the site was probably a summer village for as many as 400 people. Just upland is a summer kayak campsite with a frame shelter in small, flat, grassy clearing. Just inside the forest are 14 depressions in the earth, which were the site of a big house. There is a trail that leads through the forest to an old-growth forest that was once a native burial site. The deceased were placed in boxes and placed

These culturally modified trees were used by First Nations people who “farmed” cedar bark in strips for use in hats, clothes, baskets and more. Mound Island is not an Indian Reserve even though the signs of long-term use are obvious. It stands at the heart of the traditional territory of the Mamaleleqala Que’Qua’Sot’Enox band of the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations. The name of the territory is Hee La Dee: “The Land of Plenty.” Hee La Dee was the heart of a successful aboriginal economy long before it was visited by European settlers. sun-bleached middens pinpoint the site of native villages and food gathering areas. Our other objective was to locate the Chief’s Bath on the north side of Berry Island in Village Channel. The site is marked by a pictograph of the Hanasta, or cannibal spirit, which protects it from evil spirits and unwanted visitors. As I motored near, I spotted the heavy eyebrows of the Hanasta staring down at me from about six feet above the high-water mark. The painting seemed to retain its power to bless or curse. Incoming chiefs were required to sit in the bath four times a day for four days as the cold waters of the tide washed in. With respect for the sprits and First Nations People, I captured a few pictures and we pondered what it was like to live in another time and culture, before we returned to Easy Goin’. It is a privilege to visit these First Nations traditional locations, and visitors are reminded to treat these sites and any artifacts they find with respect.

PERFECT ENDING That evening we sat on deck and enjoyed our favorite beverage and a vibrant sunset while a couple of bald eagles floated effortlessly overhead and three black-tailed deer appeared in the small meadow at the end of the anchorage. The scene made a fitting ending to the day in this land of plenty.

Drury Inlet’s rolling hills and bountiful waters are so pristine because visitors can arrive only via boat or floatplane. STORY AND PHOTOS BY DEANE HISLOP
WE TIMED OUR ARRIVAL AT Stuart Narrows near high slack to avoid the 7-knot current that can flow through the narrow pinch point. Slack occurs 15 minutes after high and low slack at Alert Bay. We guided Easy Goin’ through the narrowest point, and swiftest portion, staying clear of Welde Rock, a large, flat, drying rock in the center of the narrows. It was covered during our passage, but kelp identified its location. The rock dries at about an 8-foot tide. PNW-10

Richmond Bay’s Drury Inlet is a scenic inlet but in a different way. Most inlets along the B.C. coast are steep and fjordlike, but Drury is surrounded by low, rolling hills that run east and west and are covered with second-growth forest. As a result, portions of the inlet are susceptible to prevailing summer westerlies. Beyond the scenery, we are attracted to Drury Inlet because we find it lesser traveled than the neighboring Broughton Island area and its abundance of sea life. The only access to this coastal paradise is by boat or floatplane, which adds to the isolation and sense of adventure.

Our destination was Richmond Bay, just inside the inlet on the south side. Prior to entering the bay, we set the prawn traps at a location suggested by Chris Scheveers, Sullivan Bay’s marina manager (sullivanbaymarina.com), a few days prior. The inlet’s waters are known to be rich in these large, sweet crustaceans. We planned to retrieve the traps the next morning as we departed to continue our inlet exploration. Once past the north side of Leche Islet, we turned into Richmond Bay and gave a wide berth to rocks and an islet in the center of the bay, which includes two anchorages. The first, in the extreme southwestern corner, was taken, so we set Easy Goin’s hook in the southeastern portion of the bay up against the western shoreline for some protection from the wind, if it kicked up. A short time after the anchor was securely set, the sailboat Determination joined us in the bay. We had met Howard and Sue of Poulsbo, Wash., earlier in our summer cruise, and trading summer cruising stories made for a nice rendezvous. After lunch I launched the tender for some lingcod fishing in another location back near the narrows Scheveers had suggested. Once the dinghy was loaded with a rod, tackle, a net, a depth sounder and safety equipment, I was off across the bay and though a narrow opening between a small island and the mainland. Upon arriving at Scheveers’ hotspot, I dropped a 2-ounce jig tipped with a large rubber worm over the side. As the offering approached the bottom, the rod doubled over and it was fish-on. In less than 30 minutes from when I departed, I was back to Easy Goin’ with an 18-pound lingcod. We took pictures and prepared a delicious dinner of prawns and fried fish. Late in the afternoon a large school of salmon appeared in the anchorage as drizzle began to fall. Fish were rolling and jumping everywhere. With all the rings on the bay’s surface, it looked like it was raining much harder than it actually was. For a couple that likes to fish, we found it difficult not to don the foul-weather gear and go fishing, but we had all the fish the refrigerator and freezer could handle, so for
the balance of the day we oohed and aahed as we watched Mother Nature’s show. In the morning a few fish were still rolling and jumping, but boy did it rain overnight. There was a new creek roaring down the hillside and emptying into the bay off Easy Goin’s stern. We had set out a plastic container on the back deck the night before and it had caught three inches of water. It served as a reminder of how hard it can rain in this area, even during the summer.
After a warm breakfast we headed out of the bay to pull the traps and continue our exploration of the inlet. Arlene was at the helm controlling Easy Goin’, holding it in position, as I operated the pot puller on the stern. The two traps had a total of 180 succulent spot prawns. Given such success, we re-baited the traps and returned them to our little honey-hole. We revised our float plan, reset the anchor and enjoyed another day in beautiful Richmond Bay.

QUICK ESCAPE
PILLAR POINT IS POPPIN’
There is more than Mavericks for recreational boaters to enjoy in this hidden beach town. PILLAR POINT HARBOR IS NESTLED into the crook of California, just east of where Maverick’s Beach juts out. This area may be best known for the infamous surf spot Mavericks, but even folks who aren’t big-wave surfers will find plenty to see and do in Pillar Point Harbor. Pillar Point Harbor 1 is between Santa Cruz and San Francisco, at the northern tip of Half Moon Bay. Boaters can stop in and refuel before entering the hustle and bustle of San Francisco Bay. The outer jetty and inner harbor create calm wave conditions, which is ironic since some of the largest waves in the nation are barely a mile away.
The calm waters of Pillar Point’s inner harbor are surrounded by some of the biggest waves in the world at Mavericks.

WHERE TO MOOR The Pillar Point Harbormaster’s office is located in the middle of the harbor. The personnel monitor VHF Channel 16 and 74, and someone there will provide information about which slips are available for guest mooring, since there isn’t any designated guest mooring. Hotel options for anyone who’d like to spend a night on terra firma include the luxurious Oceano Hotel & Spa 2 , which is a short walk from the harbor, and the Oceano Inn 3 on the same campus, for a more low-key stay. REFRESHMENT & SUSTENANCE
Harbor personnel can direct visiting boaters to an empty slip, from where they will no doubt see the “golf ball” — actually a radar tower — that is easily visible from many vantage points around Pillar Point.

Just across the parking lot from the Oceano Hotel is Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. 4 . Stop in some craft beer and/or eat a great seafood-centric dinner with a beautiful view from the patio. A little farther northwest on Capistrano Road are a few more gems that will satisfy any hankering. Seville Tapas 5 is a spot for an authentic Spanish meal, from paella to café con leche. It’s a small restaurant, so hungry boaters should call ahead to make sure the place is open. Right next door is the Old Princeton Landing: Public House and Grill 6 . Recently reopened, the bar has merged with the adjoining restaurant and features a full sports bar vibe with a menu of sustainable locally sourced meat, seafood and veggies. If a white-tablecloth experience is preferred, Mezzaluna 7 is the place to

BURN SOME CALORIES Just to the right as one walks the pier toward shore is the Half Moon Bay Kayak Co. 8 , which offers an extensive list of services and classes, including private instruction, kayaks for fishing, kayak repair, bike rentals and SUP rentals. Adventurers will surely spot an otter, a harbor seal or a California sea lion while they paddle in the bay. The world-famous Mavericks break is right outside the door, so it’s easy to visit one of the most legendary surfing spots in the world. For folks who prefer not to swim with record-breaking waves, Marsh Beach and
Fishphone is the way to find out which boats on the dock are selling their catch. Hikers can hit the trails to the area around the Air Force station.

Folks in the harbor have access to a unique service: Fishfone. They can call (650) 726-8724 and find out which boats in the harbor are selling their catch; plus, the service offers info about surf, tide and weather conditions for the day. Newport Beach Harbor Commission, Duncan McIntosh sat for his last meeting June 13. Two terms of dealing with safety, noise, sea lions and environmental issues were fulfilling for the lifelong Southern California resident and businessman (he owns Sea Magazine, among several others), but there won’t be any further political involvement. “No thank you,” he told The Log (which he also owns) when asked about future office aspirations. McIntosh will stay busy with the Fred Hall Shows, the San Diego International Boat Show, the Los Angeles International Boat Show, the Newport Beach Boat Show, and several magazines and newspapers.

SEPTEMBER QUESTION:
The old adage “it takes money to make money” holds true here. With a little effort and money, the boat will show better, sell faster and bring the money it deserves.
Bonus Question: What if a boat just has too much
wrong with it to take care of everything? Is there a market for it?
Sellers can be their own worst enemy when it’s time to sell a vessel. What can they do to make sure the boat is ready to spur good offers? LEMONS CAN BE made into lemonade. SELLERS WHO WANT to see the most return
on the sale of their vessel should do the following: make the vessel show ready and conduct pre-survey servicing and preventive maintenance. To make a vessel show ready: • Keep the exterior clean and shiny at all times. The boat should be ready for showings at a moment’s notice. • Remove most, if not all, personal items from the boat and thoroughly clean its interior. • Remove odors by any means. A noticeable odor can be a deal killer! • Stage the décor. Think of a model home and stage the boat similarly. When it comes to pre-survey servicing
and preventative maintenance, think about the following: • Clean the engine room and bilges thoroughly. • Repair leaks and attend to as many simple fixes as possible. Taking care of such chores will usually cost substantially less now rather than after a survey or as an allowance to the buyer. • Remove old rust, oil and salt corrosion stains from around the engines, the through-hulls and other machinery. (Surveyors will write up any sign of a leak, even if it has already been repaired.) • Lubricate and exercise the through-hull valves. If they are stiff the surveyor will write them up and the buyer may want them replaced, regardless of their condition.
Nearly every boat has a value, and the cost of repairs needs to be subtracted from that to establish a fair market value. The trouble may not meet the reward at the end. There are buyers who specialize in flipping yachts. These are fixer-uppers, and the repairs will likely be well beyond what a layman can accomplish. This answer came from “Learn the ABCs of Yacht Brokerages,” a feature story in our August 2015 issue.
