A MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER SHUTTING DOWN SEA MAGAZINE a few months ago was a mistake. We had the biggest audience

of active boat owners and buyers in the West. It’s time to correct that mistake and re-introduce Sea Magazine to those readers. We’ll be returning with this April/May issue, which features stories on Pacific Coast cruising, composite construction, travel, sailing, and other boating topics. Some of the features in this issue spotlight the Greenline 39, World Cat 400DC-X and Lexus Luxury. Another spotlight: boating in Cabo San Lucas. The re-introduction of Sea also features a story on women in sailing. The table is also being set for the June/July issue. We’ll continue to publish two months at a time and see where the tide and wind takes us. Sea Magazine has been the voice of boating trends in the Western United States for more than 111 years when we published from a small office on Wharf Street in downtown Seattle – and we have every intention of being here for the next generation of boaters in the West. It’s been a few months since we last published, so it might take us some time for us to get our sea legs back. We’ll certainly be polishing the publication as we bring Sea back to life. There might be a few tweaks and alterations, but the spirit of Sea Magazine will persist. Basically, we’re back. Stay tuned, as the Sea staff will reacquaint themselves with you. We here at Sea believe you will enjoy the content they’ll present with each issue. Sea Magazine has always been an asset – and now that it is back, she will continue to serve the West Coast’s cadre of active boat buyers and owners.

LEAD BOAT // LEXUS LY 650

ENJOY LEXUS LUXURY ON THE WATER Lexus design language in a 65-foot yacht. WHEN YOU really love your car, why not get a matching yacht? Lexus (whose advanced technology and quality control methods helped form the DNA for creating the Marine Business Department of Toyota Motor Corporation in 1997) has just launched its 65-foot flagship, so now you can enjoy Lexus luxury on the water too.

Lexus partnered with Marquis Yachts to build the LY 650

The new Lexus LY 650 is an eye-catching cruiser, which (according to the company) expresses the “Lexus design language.” It’s true that it brings some upscale automotive detailing to the midrange boating market and to good effect. This flybridge model is from Nuvolari Lenard, an Italian design studio known for its work on some spectacular superyachts. Lexus is also partnering with Marquis Yachts, builder of the Marquis and Carver brands. Marquis adopted the world famous Toyota Production System in its plant in Wisconsin and rolled out the first hull of this design at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last fall. An optional two-tone color scheme and lots of curvy, flowing lines meet the eye at the dock. Metallic accents at the bow, windows and air intakes are repeated inside in the salon with twin metal ribbons integrated into the furniture at the galley and behind the twin helm seats. Those paying attention will see the famous Lexus “L logo” embedded into the salon floor. Digital switching is provided by Lexus’ proprietary LY-Link and propulsion is Volvo Penta IPS with a choice of horsepower from 1,050 to 1,350. Joystick control and dynamic positioning look to be standard and top speed is expected to be around 42 knots. Lexus is focused sharply on creating a true luxury lifestyle brand beyond automotive that blends design, craftsmanship and technology, so stepping into yachting is a natural expansion. The Lexus LY 650, like any crafted luxury item, will dip deep into your wallet – around $3.7 million. You don’t need to drive a Lexus on land to want to own one on the water but they do make a lovely matching set.

The Hypothetical Shape of Water Aqua is a 112-meter Sinot-designed (sinot.com) superyacht concept that will make most everyone’s jaw drop. This yacht’s designed to operate on liquid hydrogen (stored in two 28-ton vacuum-isolated tanks) and fuel-cell technology. The generated electricity is transmitted to switchboards, where it’s distributed throughout the yacht to provide power for propulsion, auxiliary systems and hotel loads. The electric propulsion makes Aqua stealthy, and the yacht has a top speed of 17 knots. At a cruise of 10 to 12 knots, it has a 3,750-n.m. range. The owner’s “pavilion” is on the front half of the upper deck and includes a transparent bow section called the Observatory where owners can watch the waves in perfect Zen. The wellness center includes a hydro massage, a yoga room and a hatch that opens to reveal the water below, giving people the perception of exercising on an island. Another defining feature is a grand staircase with a giant façade of strengthened glass that fronts the hydrogen tanks. Aqua has accommodations for 14 guests and 31 crew. — ZP

Hawaii is the 41st mostpopulous state in the U.S., and has the fourth-most miles of coastline at 750, but it is dead last in boat registrations, with only 12,371 registered vessels. Wyoming has half of Hawaii’s population and more than twice as many registered boats. Any guesses as to how much coastline Wyoming has?

Safety for All

The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water offers a range of free materials for boaters who want to establish a Life Jacket Loaner location at marinas, clubs, fuel docks or campgrounds. More than 140,000 life jackets are loaned out each year, and to date three lives have been saved. To apply to become a location, go to BoatUS.org/Life-Jacket-Loaner/Apply. Selected sites are given a weather-resistant storage bin that contains 12 jackets in infant, child, youth and adult sizes with return tags. Organizers also receive promotional signs, flyers, a log book and sample press kit.

In September, Orange County Coastkeeper coordinated 22 trash cleanup sites in Southern California as part of Coastal Cleanup Day, resulting in 25,000 pounds of garbage being removed from parks, beaches and wetlands. While most of the removed debris was routine, some of the more interesting items included a stiletto platform shoe with water in the platform base, a Santa hat, a Catalina Beach House room key and a yoga mat. coastkeeper.org

Pressed for Time

Last year, Victor Vescovo reached the bottom on the Mariana Trench in a submersible, setting a depth record. Strapped to the outside of his bubble were three Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professional wristwatches. At a depth of 35,853 feet, the Seamaster watches were under more than 15,940 psi of pressure (roughly equivalent to the pressure a husband skulking through the door at 6 a.m. faces after not calling all night). And they worked when they got back to the surface. SEAMAGAZINE.COM APRIL/MAY 2020

MEXICO’S GOLD COAST CRUISING GUIDE

Boaters are attracted to the Gold Coast’s 18 nautical destinations, all of which are golden during the fall, winter and spring cruising season. MEXICO’S GOLD COAST STRETCHES 475 nautical miles, from Puerto Vallarta to Acapulco. This tropical shoreline curves like a giant pouch stuffed full of gold nuggets. Recreational boaters are attracted to the coast’s 18 nautical destinations, all of which are golden during the fall, winter and spring cruising season. Ranging from posh marinas at glamorous resorts, to bustling ports and remote anchoring coves, these nuggets are easy pickings, so let’s take a look. PUERTO VALLARTA in Banderas Bay is the best place to start. We can stock up on provisions and pick up fly-in guests before cruising south. Four marinas and two boat

yards line the north shore. The south shore is full of the small but interesting village anchorages of Las Animas and Yelapa. Cabo Corrientes can be bumpy if an afternoon wind is blowing, so round this headland in the evening or overnight. CHAMELA BAY contains Islas Pajarera (Aviary) and Colorado, both with anchoring coves, plus 12 islets. Tucked into both ends of the 5-mile beach are the primary overnight anchorages off the resort villages of Perula and Playa Chamela. Carayes, named for the endangered Caray sea turtles that nest here, has a gem ashore in each of its three tiny lobes: Playa

This tropical shoreline curves like a giant pouch stuffed full of gold nuggets.

Blanca (private home), Playa Rosa (French restaurant) and Playa Carayes (small, posh Hotel El Caray). Neon bungalows climb the jungle cliffs. Moorings hold excursion boats overnight. TENACATITA’S two lobes span five miles, providing reliable shelter in NW wind, when up to 30 cruising boats may swing in comfort. Playa Tenacatita anchorage is closest to Las Escolleras, a dive spot also known as Aquarium Reef. At the bay’s south end beach, La Manzanilla village has shops close to Highway 200. Tenacatita’s largest anchorage lies in the north end, below Blue Bay hotel. When departing Tenacatita, look for La Iglesia, the church, in the towering cliffs. “JUNGLE RIVER DINGHY TRIP” This is Tenacatita’s primo activity, a dinghy adventure through the Las Iguanas mangrove estuary. Starting south of the palm plantation campground, you cross a small bar then meander through leaf-shaded channels amid colorful wildlife. Three miles upstream, land the dinghy on the north side of Playa Tenacatita for your picnic lunch, then three miles downstream, exiting before

sunset. This is ideal for groups of two or three families. PLAYA CUASTECOMATE: Beautiful black sand rims this small turquoise bay tucked into the NW side of the Melaque headland. The best spot to drop the hook is off the hotels in the SW corner. Melaque & San Patricio are adjacent beach-resort villages in the west end of large Navidad Bay. Anchor off Melaque, but during the week of March 17, join the St. Patrick festivities. He is the patron saint of San Patricio village. BARRA DE NAVIDAD: A lighted channel leads boaters behind this gorgeous blonde vsand spit into two sheltered lagoons for anchoring and the first full-service marina and fuel dock since Puerto Vallarta. Marina Puerto Isla Navidad has 200 slips inside its own enclosed basin. Behind it rises a 12-story Spanish Colonial resort. The marina’s fuel dock lies 300 yards into Laguna Colimilla, which contains another fishing village, the largest free anchoring area and an island where the TV series “McHale’s Navy” was filmed. Punta Graham headland shields these lagoons. The beach-front town of Barra de Navidad covers the sand spit with shops and eateries. Water taxis shuttle visitors between the marina, anchorages, hotels and lagoon side of the town.

The Gold Coast is the best winter cruising ground on Mexico’s mainland shore. Gold stars indicate a jewel of a boating stop.

MARABASCO SHELF: At six miles down from Punta Graham, sportfishers flock to this seasonal shoal that extends a half mile out to catch marlin and dorado, or skim the beach berm for rooster-fish. Rio Marabasco floods every summer to enrich this fishing destination. MANZANILLO encompasses four distinct anchoring bays: undeveloped Carrizal, craggy Higuerras, Bahia Santiago with its many anchorages and small resorts, and the largest, Bahia Manzanillo which houses the commercial port and navy. The only marina, Las Hadas, is tucked into the east side of Punta Santiago, the craggy headland between Santiago and Manzanillo bays. Behind the marina, Las Hadas resort’s fairy-tale architecture climbs the cliffs. Sailfish chartering is Manzanillo’s major tourist industry, but strictly catch and release. PUNTA CABEZA NEGRA lies about 50 miles down the beach from Manzanillo. This peninsula juts out two miles and has two bold heads, allowing boaters to anchor

in either north or south wind and current conditions. CALETA DE CAMPOS is a town atop Buffadero Bluff. A low concrete breakwater shields the anchorage in the bay’s north end, where stairs bring visitors up to the town. Besides shops, restaurants and small hotels, boaters can visit Michoacan’s Technical School of Navigation and Fishing. By dinghy you might find “Cara de Nixon” in the cliffs. Isla Grande looks like a miniature Disney fantasy island, less than a mile wide with 168’ peaks. Two of its three sandy coves allow overnight anchoring, Playa Norte and Playa Veradero, but due to delicate corals, “swimming only” is posted at Playa Coral on the south side. Sand floored seafood cantinas fill the coves by day, but all the tourists depart at dusk. IXTAPA is famous for sparkling white beaches, 5-star hotels and robust night life, but boaters find comfort next door in Marina Ixtapa’s 600 slips, fuel dock and boat yard, all within a 2-lobed interior basin, including golf course. Just outside the marina, sportfishers and divers spend all day at the four Islas Blancas. ZIHUATANEJO BAY is adjacent to Ixtapa, but opposite in ambiance. Zihuatanejo means “Place of the Goddess Women” in Nahuatl. Today we can anchor off five beaches within this gorgeous 2-mile bay, while the villagers who used to go to sleep at sundown now must adapt to cruise-ship visitors. A bus links Zihuatanejo with Ixtapa hourly. Papanoa offers reliable overnight anchorage for boaters. On the north side of Morro Papanoa, two overlapping breakwaters shield three shrimp docks. The lighted outer dock is handy if you need to come alongside for repairs or take on provisions, while the nearby marine base keeps law and order. ACAPULCO: Final jewel on the Gold Coast, about 300 yachts can find berths in the harbor’s West End: Acapulco Yacht Club, Marina Santa Lucia, La Marina and Performance Marina. Mooring buoys hold 50 more. Fuel docks are at AYC and Performance. Within walking distance are grocery stores, eateries, the famous Zolcalo park, the cruise-ships dock and the starshaped El Fuerte museum. At Isla Roqueta, snorkel over the golden sculpture garden.

THE EXPERTS By DEANE HISLOP

EARTEC ULTRALIGHT

THE BEAUTY OF

WIRELESS HEADSETS Eartec UltraLITE Headsets

In the past, I’ve never been a big fan of headsets. Easy Goin’ is only 40-feet LOA, but we do have some communication issues when docking and anchoring, which also create safety concerns. We’ve always gone with the old-school way, using the spoken word and hand signals, via a chat onboard well in advance, followed by some quiet (or not so quiet) words and hand signals (sometime jesters) during the event. We all know how well sound travels across the water and you know you can be heard. Thanks to a discussion with Scott Feeley, Eartec representative, and last year’s threeand-a-half-month cruise of the British Columbian coast, my opinion of headsets has undergone a radical change. We purchased a set, which included batteries, battery charger and carrying case and then put them to the test. They facilitated a level of safety, calm and quiet that was flat-out amazing, with no hand signals. Early in the trip, while docking at Kanaka Wharf in Ganges on Saltspring Island one morning, Arlene and I were able to communicate at such a low-decibel level, thanks to five push-button volume settings, that other boaters nearby didn’t seem to even notice our arrival. And because the ergonomically designed headsets are wireless, full-duplex

14

(providing hand-free operation) and contain a rechargeable lithium battery for six hours of continuous use on a full charge, no cords or battery packs, or other entanglements to deal with made for easy and reliable operations. Later in the trip we found the headsets handy in crowded anchorages and picking up a mooring buoy in windy conditions, for a calm and quiet experience. Not to mention the reduced stress level for the crew. Another reason why we are sold on this stout but light weight (2.5 oz) single earcup headset is the mic boom swivels 270-degree to accommodate wearing on the chosen ear. The single ear cup also allows the user to hear what else is going on in the area, maintaining complete situational awareness. The mic is muted when it’s raised, for speaking with an individual nearby. Besides the ease of operation, improved communications, added safety and reduced stress level when docking and anchoring, the headsets also came in handy when setting and retrieving shrimp pots and crab traps. When setting and recovering shrimp pots we like to hold the boat over the desired location, usually in 250 to 350-feet of depth, and not drift off the spot thereby keeping the pot directly below the boat. Arlene is at the helm and I’m on the aft deck operating the pot puller out of her sight and with the sound of the motors idling it is hard to communicate. With the headsets we can effortlessly communicate, making pulling the traps and pots without yelling. We found the Eartec UltraLITE headsets to be well designed and manufactured and the added ease of communications and safety made our purchase well worth it. GRINDING GRID’S GEARS

Does Mr. Grid just find boats for children? No, he builds submarines.” THIS JOB, LIKE EVERYBODY’S, has its “down-days.” Mine seem to involve the guy who calls

on a Wednesday (usually the Wednesday before a holiday) and says “Two years ago my power tilt started leaking and now the engine won’t go either direction. I need you to see if the boat lift is functioning, then fix the leak while the boat’s on the lift. I have grandchildren coming this weekend and they’ll want to use the boat.” You wonder why I’m compared to Andy Rooney’s curmudgeonliness? I have at least a half-dozen scenarios like that a year. To start the year, though, let me say I just got the “Grinding” part of “Grid’s Gears” out of the way, and in the holiday spirit thought I’d tell you the job ain’t all bad. I have a young customer with a growing family. I understand the expense of boating and am always willing to help teach him what he needs to know about various repairs he can effect. Last year his twin boys and daughter decided they wanted a boat, so I kept my eye out until I found a neat fiberglass skiff that could be hauled ashore on rails when not being rowed. The kids were ecstatic, and somewhere along the line one asked his dad, “Does Mr. Grid just find boats for children?” John, in his solemn way, said, “No, he builds submarines.” And when the kids go to bed at night and the parents tell them stories to put them to sleep, the kids want to know when I’ll build them a submarine. I found them a great four-stroke engine for the boat and the whole family enjoys it as much as the big boat. But no submarine. Finally I ordered a small model sub from Amazon and wrote a story about a bad little boy who grew up sinking wooden boats, but he thought that’s the way subs came—always sinking. That’s their Christmas present from me. Most of my friends are the kind of guys you’d want in your booth at a redneck bar. Somebody might start teasing me about drinking unsweetened ice tea while everybody else drank Wild Turkey, and the next thing you know, there would be wounded bodies all over, except in my booth. My friends are educated and highly skilled in their professions. What ties us together is the telltale grease under our fingernails. One of

these friends is William, aka Willie. Willie subscribes to Sea and Boating World (told you he was educated). Willie purchased a 23’ Grady White cuddy and somehow—before we were friends, just customer/mechanic—I ended up working on the venerable Yamaha. Willie had the boat a few years and decided to sell it, unbeknownst to me (as though I had a say!). The first I knew I got a text from Willie—CALL ME!! I did and he proceeded to tell me about a guy from Seattle (Joseph, aka Joe) who was going to fly in, test the boat, pay him and have someone pick it up and take it to Seattle. SCAM! SCAM! SCAM! “This is classic Craigslist,” I told Willie. “I thought so too,” he said, “but then I was telling the guy Grid takes care of the engine and he says, ‘Grid? Writes for Sea and Boating World?’ So I figure he’s okay.” As it turned out, the whole deal was perfectly legit. I left home at 5 a.m., got there at 7 a.m. to go for a frigid boat ride on the James, and because our town is locked down for the Oyster Festival, got to spend 12 delightful hours with them until I could go home, all the time listening to Joe saying, “You’re a real person, not just made up! You’ve got grime and ink stains on your hands! You’re a real person!” Yup. 2891 miles from Seattle to Urbanna, VA to discover I’m real. Willie’s real. Chuck’s real. Terry’s real. And Joe? We think you’re real, too. Now I’ve gone from local to national repute, let me tell you about the two gentlemen from the World Bank who met in a restaurant in Moscow. After an hour of work chit-chat, the conversation moved to where they lived (100+ miles apart), the joy of boating, and how each was lucky to have a mobile tech named….Grid.

Stabilizer

Chafe Guards

Marine stabilization systems are getting stronger but not bigger. Seakeeper just launched its Seakeeper 18, which provides more righting power but stays within the same footprint and weight as the smaller Seakeeper 16. Weighing just more than 2,200 pounds, the Seakeeper 18 has a compact footprint of approximately 43 inches by 43 inches by 33 inches and targets boats from 65 to 75 feet, or up to 56 tons. The unit is rated for 7,000 rpm with an angular momentum of 18,000 Newtonmeter-seconds (N-m-s), which is the standard for measuring gyroscopic output. seakeeper.com

A quick and easy solution to protect braided and threestrand cordage in high-wear areas, Secure Chafe Guards from Davis Instruments increase line lifespans. Made from rugged UV-stabilized nylon webbing, the chafe guards are 16 inches long, removable and sold in pairs. Inside is Velcro that grips lines from three-eighths to 1 inch in diameter, and the whole package fits snugly so it can fit through chocks. Secure Chafe Guards prevent chafing over a cleat, cap rail or anchor roller, and where two lines cross. davisinstruments.com

Propane Outboard

Grab Rail

With a 7.5-cubic-inch displacement, the new propane-powered Mercury outboard delivers true 5 hp power and weighs in at just 59 1/2 pounds. The engine comes standard with a propane auto shutoff valve on the engine and in the fuel hose connector. The standard six-foot fuel hose threads onto the outboard and comes with a standard US POL connector on the tank side. A 20-pound tank of conventional propane provides approximately 10 hours of boating at full throttle, so owners can venture farther and faster in their tender. mercurymarine.com.

Schmitt & Ongaro Marine’s 9-inch Top Mounted Grab Rail is made of T-316 cast stainless steel, and the polished finish combines with a black rubber insert that’s comfortable to the touch and looks like perforated leather. Tough and abrasion resistant, the Grab Rail provides grip even when it’s wet and comes with a threeyear warranty on the insert. The rail can be wood or cap-screw mounted and installation is via flaps in the rubber. schmittongaromarine.com

Don’t carry it. Pull that heavy cooler loaded with food and beverages down the dock. Cold Wheels from SeaSucker are 7-inch wheels with sealed ball bearings that mount on smooth-sided coolers in seconds with no need for drilling holes. For use over rutted and uneven terrain, Cold Wheels can be removed as quickly as they are installed, and they support up to 200 pounds by the sheer power of suction. The stainless steel hardware ensures years of maintenance-free use. When the integrated power button displays orange, a few quick pumps renews its holding power. seasucker.com

The RA1225HP 8-foot Classic HighPerformance VHF antenna from Glomex Marine is vertically polarized to minimize signal reflection on the water, so it works on inland, coastal and offshore vessels. With a frequency range of 156/162 MHz, this collinear-phased antenna has a gain average of 6 dB, maximum input power of 100W and 50 ohms impedance. Its internal elements are made of spiral copper wires inserted into brass radiator tubes, an arrangement that provides its range, clarity and power to enhance the radio’s overall performance. The double-thick fiberglass tube has a smooth polyurethane finish and weighs only 1.6 pounds. glomex.us

SEA TRIAL

By CHRIS CASWELL

WORLD CAT 400DC-X

Fishing boat, bowrider, dive boat, family fun, weekender – this boat does it all.

SOME BOATS TRY TO do many things and fail at everything. The new World Cat 400DC-X takes on a multitude of challenges but succeeds at all of them. Fishing boat, bowrider, dive boat, family fun, weekender---this list goes on. World Cat built its reputation on rugged offshore fishing machines and if you think this is just another center console for a bunch of guys, you’d be sadly wrong. The DC in the name means “Dual Console”, which is one of the features that makes the World Cat 400DC-X so cool: you walk between twin consoles to reach the forward cockpit.

Now, if you’re thinking this is one of those little V-shaped bowrider hang outs for a couple of people, again you’re wrong. Remember that the World Cat 400DC-X has nearly a 13-foot beam, which means you have seating----nay, make that luxurious seating---for a dozen friends on wraparound lounges. Two tables rise electrically from the floor to create either sunpads for roasting or tables that can accommodate eight for dining. An optional sunshade attaches to the hardtop, giving you a shady getaway forward. A nice feature is the clever sliding

The World Cat 400DC-X offers seating for more than 10 people on its wrap-around lounges.

walk-through windshield door, which neatly solves the problem of closing off the cockpit from spray or wind, and it does so without any pinched fingers found on conventional folding windshields. And I liked that the 400DC-X is one level bow to stern: no steps to trip Aunt Edna. On our test boat, the transom was another multi-purpose zone. To port, fishermen will find a 24-gallon live well and a cooler with chiller plates. Separated by a walkway to the stern platform, the starboard transom was for families and weekenders: a pop-up Magma propane barbecue plus a sink and cutting board meant you could grill some burgers, fish on the other, or simply walk between the two areas where you’d find a huge swim ladder big enough for a commercial dive boat. Speaking of divers, not only is the oversized ladder a real bonus, but a size door (with removable ladder) makes getting in and out of the water with tanks and weights and gear a lot easier. And even if you’re not a diver, you’ll appreciate the ability to step straight from a dock to the cockpit without any daring leaps. Of course, a major selling point is this is a catamaran, which means you get two hulls for the price of one. It’s a two-fer that provides the stability of a yacht twice its size, but those slim hulls also create less drag which translates to better speeds and better fuel economy. Our test boat had a pair of Yamaha XTO outboards punching out 425 hp each, which pushed the World Cat’s seven-and-a-half tons to a startling 46.3 mph. But the slipperiness of the twin hulls meant that, at 20 mph, she was getting 15.5 gph, or about 1.25 miles for every gallon. With the twin aluminum fuel tanks totaling 464 gallons (and leaving yourself a 10% safety margin), this gives you a 522+ mile range. This means not just the offshore islands (all of them at once!) but deep into Mexico or a long ways toward Alaska. That 13-foot beam also translates into a spacious cockpit under the fiberglass

hardtop with its big opening sunroof. There is a dinette that easily seats eight, with electric seatbacks that reverse to create a forward-facing companion seat for the skipper and an aft-facing seat to watch the fishing lines. An entertainment center has a fridge and a sink, so you have all you need to feed the gang. But if you were thinking the 400DC-X has the limited amenities usually found on center consoles, like a porta toilet and maybe a cramped berth, you’re wrong again! The port cabin has a comfy 46-inchlong by 74-inch-wide berth (wider than a twin), air conditioning, and 6 feet, five inches of headroom.

This means weekending in cool comfort: no bugs, and stand-up room to pull on your britches. Even if you’re not sleeping over, this is a secure place for kids to take naps. The starboard console has the same headroom, a freshwater flush toilet and, get this, a walk-in stall shower with teak-grated seat and hot water heater so you can get the salt off in comfort. This isn’t a “wet” shower that soaks everything, but a real walk-in stall with a door that keeps your splishin’ and splashin’ contained. Garmin 17-inch monitors (everything on this cat is big!) plus the engine monitors. Our test boat had the optional Yamaha Helm Master joystick controls, which takes all the white knuckles out of docking and can do tricks like holding in place while waiting for a spot at the fuel dock or holding over a deep-water fishing hole. The skipper also gets a double-wide seat with flip-up bolsters and tilt wheel for standing comfortably. I already gave away the top speed, but the World Cat 400DC-X is just plain fun to run. Not only is she quick, but putting the hammer down and unleashing those 850 wild horses should be prefaced by alerting your crew to hang on: she comes up on plane quick! The 400DC-X is We had the kind of lumpy one level, bow to sea conditions that aren’t the best boating days, but they were stern. perfect for wringing out this big cat, and she ate up the dishwasher seas with aplomb. Spray went to the side rather than onto the windshield and her motion was smooth and predictable. We had people aboard moving around while running flat-out, and they didn’t have to move using rails like people on a subway. She also didn’t have that unfortunate catamaran ailment called “sneezing”, where water is compressed between the hulls and blows back forward, wetting the entire boat. 20

One thing I realized is that the World Cat 400DC-X, with its windshields and side windows, could really stretch your boating season for those in areas that get either wet or cold (or both). An optional soft enclosure of the hardtop and you’ve got snug conditions on a boat that can take the off-season sea conditions. Our test boat had a 9kW Fischer Panda diesel generator tucked under the cockpit fed by a separate 24-gallon diesel tank, and that would run not only the air conditioning, but full AC power throughout which can mean blenders for piña coladas in summer or heat in winter. Space under the cockpit has also been allocated for a Seakeeper 3 gyro stabilizer, which I’m told is a popular option on the 400DC-X. When you first go aboard a 400DC-X, take the time to poke around, and you’ll find that World Cat gets big points for finding every possible nook and cranny, and turning it into a locker, a cubby, or stowage area. There is hidden rod stowage in the coaming aft, and the anchor windlass is tucked under a hatch forward, with another hatch for the rode locker. The bottom line is that I liked the World Cat 400DC-X a lot. It’s well built and thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of today’s families who do a lot of different things with their boats. Multiple options allow customizing the 400 even more for diving, fishing or just plain family fun. It’s time for your family to get a cat!

SEA TRIAL

By ZUZANA PROCHAZKA

GREENLINE 39 From Slovenia comes a swanky cruiser that, with the right configuration, can boast a small carbon footprint.

the way we go boating, whether that’s harbor cruising, distance voyaging or swinging on the anchor in blissful silence, and that may be why a Slovenian boat builder is shaping our future. I must admit I was pretty jazzed to test a Greenline. Guiltfree boating has a lot of appeal, and the Greenline’s chic styling made me think of driving a Tesla on the water. It was a treat to jump on board with JR Means from Bayport Yachts and bring both the Greenline 39 and the 40 from Long Beach to Newport Beach side by side. My expectations were high.

HYBRID TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING

22

HOW IT WORKS

The Greenline 39 is available in three versions: Diesel only, with a 370 hp Yanmar or a 220 hp Volvo Penta • Solar, with diesel propulsion but significant solar capability to power all onboard systems via batteries and panels • Hybrid, which marries diesel and electric-drive propulsion •

I tested a Hybrid version that combined a single Volvo Penta 220 hp D3 diesel with a Mahle 10 kw electric-drive motor. The integrated 7 kw generator charges a 600 Ah bank of lithium-polymer (LiPo) batteries that are a lithium-ion derivative but with a semisolid (gel) polymer electrolyte. These batteries are smaller and lighter than wet cells, need no maintenance, are rated for thousands of cycles and have a life expectancy of 10 years.

SEAMAGAZINE.COM APRIL/MAY 2020

+Sea Trial Greenline.indd 22

3/24/20 8:55 AM

In hybrid mode, a diesel engine powers a generator that manages a full charge in two and a half hours. In electric mode, propulsion is purely zero-emission battery power and the boat can travel at 4.5 knots for two and a half hours, or around 12 nautical miles (though the company touts up to 20 miles). Nevertheless, an owner can cruise the harbor for happy hour without smoke, noise or vibration, and since diesels like to be under load, such outings won’t put low-rpm hours on the engine. Greenline estimates a boats with the hybrid system puts one-third fewer hours on its engine, which translates to less maintenance, less fuel and less overall cost. Combine that with silence and an eco-consciousness, and there’s much to like.

UNPLUGGED

The Greenline 39 comes in a hybrid configuration (tested here), that includes four 300 watt solar panels on the coach roof.

The real beauty is life without the cord. Potentially, a boat that has been cruising all day won’t need to be plugged into AC power back at the slip, saving on the owner’s monthly marina bill and possibly opening up a greater variety of slip options, including those where electricity isn’t available. An owner at anchor in a sunny climate may never have to run the diesel to manage house loads — refrigeration, lights, entertainment, microwave, and, to a degree, air conditioning — because of the four 300-watt solar panels on the coach roof. The panels are connected to the inverter/charger, which was upgraded to 5,000 watts on our test boat. The inverter is located in a compartment under the helm footrest, which is large enough to climb into. Dial up the charger for times of greater electrical need or keep it in a steady trickle-charge mode to keep the batteries topped up. Running appliances through the inverter means they are all household AC devices, so there’s no need to use specialized 12v versions, which

keeps things less expensive and simple. Switching between electric and diesel drive is a matter of putting the engine in neutral and turning a switch. It’s that easy.

ON DECK

Greenline is all about simplifying the onboard lifestyle, something I noticed at the aft boarding platform. A 15-inch traverse behind the transom lets passengers cross from side to side, but for the full effect the transom lowers to form an extended 29-inch swim platform (measured from the hinge). The platform is raised and lowered via a line and an electric winch, so there’s no need for hydraulics aboard. In case of power or winch failure, it’s possible to raise the transom manually. Encompassing 6 feet, 6 inches from transom to aft bulkhead, the cockpit has a straight settee to port and a corner seat to starboard. Below the cockpit sole is an impressive amount of stowage space, enough for owners to carry just about everything for distance cruising, or all the toys for weekending. The entire aft bulkhead is mirrored and opens in two ways: the sliding door opens to starboard and a window to port lifts up while a counter extends to create an inviting indoor/outdoor feel that connects the lounges outside with the galley inside. This effect makes 39 feet seem a lot longer. The Greenline 39 is asymmetrical; the port deck is 6 inches wide and the starboard deck 15. Passengers can walk up either side but most will prefer the starboard side. Handholds and railings are of adequate height, and the sidedecks and the cockpit benefit from the cover provided by the extended composite coach roof. On the bow, our boat had the optional double sunpad with integrated headrests. Farther forward is an undivided anchor locker and an electric windlass. The bow SEAMAGAZINE.COM APRIL/MAY 2020

cleats are massive but are up on the gunwale, and I found them too close to the chocks to be used easily. Getting a line on quickly may be a knuckle-busting affair. An excellent feature I noticed on the way up the starboard side was a full-sized opening door at the helm. Positioned nicely for singlehanded docking, it will also allow the driver to assist when catching a mooring or managing the windlass.

ONBOARD LIVING

As I mentioned previously, the salon is a lovely continuation of the cockpit, in an arrangement that provides one-level living. The galley is aft to port and includes a full-sized refrigerator and freezer across to starboard. A U-shaped settee is also to port, while cabinetry and a popup TV are on the other side. The engine is accessed via the sole mid-salon. Situated to starboard, the helm includes a 12-inch Raymarine MFD, the diesel/electric drive switch in the middle, and bow and stern thruster controls outboard of the wheel. The controls are positioned such that the driver can reach them as she steps out during docking. In this position, I could see both forward and aft and also down along the side to the dock. A small integrated footrest is included at the helm, but buyers can opt for a full-sized board, which folds down and allows shorter drivers to stand and see out. One thing I found troublesome was the placement of the VHF; it was tucked down on the left side of the dash in a way that made it hard to reach it. Greenline needs to find better placement for this. Overhead are twin electrically actuated hatches for light and ventilation. And speaking of light, the Greenline 39 has large windows running down both sides of the cabin and a full-glass uninterrupted windshield that gives the driver and any companion a movie-like Price as tested $616,160

Master occupants can access the head directly, but it is shared with the guest cabin, which is to port. Here are twin beds, a round opening porthole, and an overhead slider that opens onto the salon and adds light.

TEST DRIVE

I jumped between the Greenline 39 and 40 on the test, though my primary target was the 39, on which we first zipped around in electric mode and topped out at 6.1 knots on flat water behind the Long Beach jetty. Using the electric drive, I could hear the motor whir but at a significantly quieter level than a running diesel. We then switched to diesel mode. The 39 got on plane in 6.8 seconds and topped out at 18.8 knots at 4050 rpm. We found a steady cruise speed at 15 knots, where the diesel

burned 10.5 mph. At just less than 7 knots, the Greenline 39 has a range of 1,000 nautical miles in diesel mode. Periodically, we made strange S-turns but attributed that to a poorly calibrated autopilot. Because the seas were flat, I spun up a few wakes and noticed how the 39’s hull sliced right through and sat fairly steady even when I put it parallel to the waves. There is room aboard for a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, and it is an option though it’s hardly necessary. I found the Greenline 39 made wide, arcing, slow turns at speed, so despite its knife-like shape, there was no stomach-tightening lean. The wheel was a bit stiff and took six turns to get from lock to lock, and that may take some getting used to, especially for drivers maneuvering in close quarters. The best way to dock was to line up with the slip and then let the bow and stern thrusters push sideways. Greenline models are offered in a straight-shaft configuration

Patent No. US 8,109,221 B2

only (no pod drives), so the stern thruster is an important option.

THE GREENLINE OFFERING

The Greenline 39 and 40 are built on the same hull, but the 39 has adopted a newer and more contemporary aesthetic. Its profile includes a plumb bow, a sharp forefoot, a slightly reverse transom, hard chines brought all the way forward to knock down spray and a sleeker coach roof. Beyond looks however, there are other differences. The 40 has twin diesel engines with two accompanying electric motors, a higher top speed and about 70 percent of the range at 7 knots, primarily due to the fact the tankage is the same on both models. The 40 also has a companion seat (more of a perch), a full electric sunroof over the helm and salon, and two extra solar panels on the roof. The choice between the two models really comes down to how buyers use their boat. Do they need twin engines to go faster and do they prefer more traditional styling?

The Efficiency of Proa Asymmetry

The bold advantages of Aspen set us apart, and result in a better boating experience. The patented hull provides better fuel economy, smoother ride, natural stability, reduced emissions, and more interior space. Models range from 28’ to 40’, and each Aspen is custom built to order, you always get exactly what you want. Call today to schedule your tour.

ntil the late 1940s, nearly all recreational boats were built of wood. Without careful and continuous maintenance, those boats tended to leak, rot and fall apart. In the 1930s scientists at Owens Corning invented fiberglass as an insulation material, but it wasn’t until after World War II that innovative manufacturers decided to apply this material to boat building. By properly layering and laminating glass fibers with resin, they were able construct hulls, decks and components. Early fiberglass boats had some issues, mostly having to do with the resins builders used, but by the late 1950s better resins were developed, and boat quality improved. Materials and processes have been improving ever since, and for many reasons composites continue to be the most prevalent material used in recreational boats today.

Composite Advantages

Composite boats have good strength-to-weight ratios and durability, although they can crack, so hull bottoms and striking surfaces are often reinforced. They can be finished to a high quality using either gelcoat or paint, and fiberglass can be molded into complex shapes, including curves. Recreational boat builders love fiberglass because it is built in a mold; it is repeatable, so sequential boats are effectively the same, which is important for class racing sailboats. But the repeatability also means builders can produce boats in series more easily and cheaply. Fiberglass revolutionized production boat building by providing a cost-effective way to construct hundreds of similar boats. Early production boats such as the 1962 Pearson Triton I grew up sailing were overbuilt.

When my father and I replaced a throughhull, we noted that the hull was nearly 2 inches thick. Back then fiberglass builders weren’t confident in the strength of the material, so they used a lot of it, but time has changed that. Ultra-thick solid-glass hulls made boats heavy, and that worked for a narrow-beam sailboat with a weighted keel, but heavier hulls decrease efficiency, especially in powerboats. Advancements in techniques and materials have vastly improved composite boats over time. Modern materials and techniques — coring, carbon fiber, vinylester resins, epoxy — and advanced processes such as resin infusion and vacuum bagging were all developed to increase strength and save weight. Composite boats are built using fibers that are impregnated with resin. When they harden, the fibers create complex shapes such as hulls, decks, hatches, hardtops and more. Different types of fibers can be used, as can different types of resins. Builders can add coring material, too, which reduces weight and noise and adds strength. The materials used and the way they are put together vary greatly depending on the builder. A basic fiberglass boat has an outer skin (gelcoat, typically) on one side, and then progressive layers of glass fibers impregnated with resin complete the laminate structure. Traditionally builders used polyester resins and a combination of glass matt (omnidirectional), woven glass (stronger bi- or multiaxial fibers) and sometimes chopped glass fibers. Some builders use a chopper gun to spray in strands and resin. Hand-laid fiberglass is a laminate where the glass is carefully placed by hand, covered with resin and pressured with a roller to squeeze out any air bubbles and eliminate voids.

Carbon Fiber

Raw carbon fiber can be identified by its gray-black strands that are often woven into roving. This material is created by bonding carbon atoms together so the crystalline structure aligns and creates

long, thin fibers that are then bundled together to create fabric. Carbon fibers have many advantages:  They are stiff  They are lightweight  They tolerate high temperatures  They are resistant to chemicals  They don’t expand or contract thermally.  When laminated into a structure with resin, carbon fiber composites have a very high strength-to-weight ratio and are extremely rigid, though they are somewhat brittle. Carbon fiber is an excellent boatbuilding material, especially when weight reduction is a priority, and can be used in place of traditional glass fibers and bonded with different resins. Carbon fiber’s primary drawback for use in building recreational boats is cost. Some builders I spoke to did not feel the benefits were worth the price. They said that without carbon fiber they could build adequately strong, lightweight composite structures. Because it is expensive, carbon fiber was once reserved for specialized parts, such as the masts of racing sailboats or cantilevering decks on megayachts, and for constructing hightech boats such as America’s Cup race boats. The cost of carbon fiber has been decreasing, which has led some recreational builders to expand their use of it.

28

Builders Who Like Carbon Fiber

Sister companies Palm Beach and Grand Banks continue to build their hulls using vacuum-infused E-glass with core-cell foam and vinylester resins, but they use carbon fiber broadly above the hull. Palm Beach GT series boats use carbon fiber extensively in the deck and superstructure. The jack shafts between the engines and IPS pods are carbon fiber, as are the dashboard, the sink and even the bowl of the marine head. The use of carbon fiber is being expanded in all the Grand Banks and Palm Beach models. Other builders may write off the use of

carbon fiber as marketing hype, but Mark Richards, the founder of Palm Beach and current CEO of Grand Banks/Palm Beach, stands by the company’s advanced construction. According to Richards, using carbon fiber aloft reduces a vessel’s weight and lowers its center of gravity, maximizing the performance of the builder’s signature warped hull form, which has a narrow

entry to slice through waves and flares aft to keep weight balanced amidships. Richards said carbon fiber and coring materials eliminate up to five tons of weight in some models, which translates to better speed and performance. He added that the builder’s hull form would not run correctly if the boats were heavier. The Palm Beach GT50 can reach a top

speed faster than 40 knots. The Grand Banks 60, a large and comfortable cruiser with three staterooms and a lot of amenities, can surpass 30 knots and maintain a range of more than 500 nautical miles even at a fast cruise. Richards feels the expense of carbon fiber is warranted because of the weight savings and efficiency that is gained. Swedish builder Delta Powerboats also

Tell the Difference

DESPITE THEIR SIMILAR APPEARANCE, different resins — polyester, vinylester, epoxy — have different properties. Polyester resin is a good boatbuilding material but has some inherent drawbacks. Polyester continues to bond with water throughout its life, which means boat hulls gain weight and lose strength over time and are subject to blistering. The interaction can be inhibited by barrier coatings, but it is not ideal. Vinylester resin, a step up, is polyester resin enhanced with epoxy, thereby eliminating many problems associated with polyester. Vinylester resins are water resistant and have their strengths. Their cost falls between polyester and epoxy, and their lower resin viscosity aids vacuum infusion. Polyester and vinylester resins cure differently depending on temperature. Since most boatbuilding shops are not temperature controlled, builders must carefully adjust MEKP catalyst levels to account for temperature or else the laminate will not fully cure. Epoxies, on the other hand, if properly mixed are not temperature dependent and can also be post-cured to ensure full hardness. Epoxy has stronger adhesion properties, which can help keep structures from delaminating, especially around a core. Polyester is half the cost of vinylester, which is half the cost of epoxy. 30

vacuum bagging and resin infusion all help builders create lighter and stronger boats. uses carbon fiber throughout its vessels, including the hull. Delta principals tout the benefits of carbon fiber’s superior strength-to-weight ratio. The builder uses resin infusion, a process whereby laminate components are carefully laid out and sealed with a vacuum bag. A precise amount of resin is then pulled through the laminate, which helps maintain the resinto-fabric ratio and eliminates voids.

Going Further

The processes Palm Beach and Delta are using deliver high-quality lightweight laminates using carbon fiber. Their construction techniques are at the forefront of recreational boat building, but further steps can be taken when even lighter parts are needed. They just aren’t cost effective for building pleasureboats, yet, because the construction costs are higher and the gains to a recreational boater are minimal. Some high-tech racing boats and composite aircraft such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner use prepreg carbon fiber construction. This process pre-impregnates the carbon fiber strands or tapes with a precise amount of resin, typically epoxy. Boeing uses robotic equipment to precisely lay down epoxy-impregnated carbon fiber. Once the structure has solidified, it is post-cured in an industrial oven/autoclave, which adds heat and pressure. Prepreg carbon fiber laminates are extremely lightweight and incredibly strong. Advanced composites in aircraft not only save weight, which makes planes more fuel efficient, but they have other advantages. Composites require less maintenance than traditional aluminum airframes. They can be pressurized better, too, because air doesn’t leak through rivet holes, and the planes can be humidified inside without risking corrosion. It all makes for a better passenger experience. So why don’t recreational boat builders prepreg their boats? It simply costs too much. It may be worth it on a $250 million airplane, but the equipment and additional cost don’t make sense for most boats and boat buyers.

Epoxy Over Wood Hull Fiberglass Epoxy Plywood

“Cold molding” is a technique where a wood structure is covered by epoxy. Boats built in this manner are very strong, because the wood acts as the structure and the epoxy fully bonds and seals the wood from any interaction with water.

Epoxy Boat Building

Boat builders such as Vicem and Jarrett Bay Boatworks use “cold molding,” which is a technique where an underlying wood structure is covered by epoxy. Boats built in this manner are very strong, because the wood acts as the structure and the epoxy fully bonds and seals the wood from any interaction with water. Some fishermen like the ride, feel and sound cold-molded boats make as they move through the water, and think this helps them catch more fish. MJM Yachts produces Downeast-style cruisers and creates composites with extensive use of closed-cell coring, multiaxial glass fibers and epoxy resin. MJM uses “wet-preg” E-glass that is soaked in a resin bath of epoxy, drawn through the rollers of an impregnating machine and carefully laid out in the mold. Epoxy is very strong and adhesive, so MJM does not need to use chop strand mats between the layers. Long, continuous fibers save weight and add strength. Vacuum bagging then compresses the structure further, eliminating any voids. Parts are TO THE WEB built in large insulated industrial oven rooms. Hulls are cored below the waterline with styrene acrylic-nitrile (SAN) foam that is lighter, stronger and tougher than other foams, so it can hold up to the high-impact loads of running fast through waves. The centerline is solid glass so it can withstand grounding and blocking during transportation. For added safety, MJM boats have a watertight collision bulkhead in the lower stem that creates an enclosed foam core–filled flotation compartment. Advanced construction techniques and modern materials such as epoxy resins, carbon fiber, closed-cell foam coring, vacuum bagging and resin infusion all help builders create lighter and stronger boats. Using superior materials and processes costs more but creates boats that are faster and more fuel efficient. Many composite boats have an outward appearance similar to fiberglass, but the technology, materials and methods used to build them give them unique characteristics of performance and durability.

LOS CABOS, Baja California Sur, Mexico— Picturesque sunsets, freshly caught seafood available at local restaurants, late night parties at the central business district, sandy beaches ideal for sunbathing and one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet – yes, such a place does exist, and it’s not as far away as you might think. Of course we’re talking about Cabo San Lucas, which is one-half of the Los Cabos region, on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula. Los Cabos (which also includes the more mellow San Jose del Cabo) has, in recent years, become a popular destination for Southern California boaters (and Hollywood types, just the same). Modern-day Cabo San Lucas is known as a tourist attraction – and it’s quite evident, when you are here, how much the city caters to its (mostly) American audience. Most of what we see in Cabo San Lucas today began to take shape after World War II, what with the local sportfishing industry being a major attraction to anglers from El Norte (and points beyond). The southern tip of Baja California was unknown to most of the world for thousands of years. The Pericú tribe, according to a few historical accounts of Baja California Sur, originally occupied Los Cabos (and nearby La Paz). Europeans (Spaniards) would arrive in La Paz in the early 1500s, setting the stage for Los Cabos to become a sleepy Mexican fishing outpost. SEAMAGAZINE.COM APRIL/MAY 2020

Los Cabos is ultimately a playground – a place for boaters to come to town and enjoy the local beaches, some fishing, a little golf, a dash of culture and plenty of nightlife. Culinary delights are aplenty.

Fishing interests from the United States started to establish themselves in Cabo San Lucas (and the Los Cabos area, in general) in the 1910s. The commercialization of Los Cabos as a tourist destination – whether those visitors are anglers, boaters or resort-goers in general – has been steadily growing since the 1950s. A large chuck of the Cabo San Lucas economy is now based on tourism. It’s not uncommon to see the two marinas here packed with boats from other locales – mostly from outside Mexico. Los Cabos is ultimately a playground – a place for boaters to come to town and enjoy the local beaches, some fishing, a little golf, a dash of culture and plenty of nightlife. Culinary delights are aplenty. The Log presents the first of an intermittent series of stories on Los Cabos. We start our series with a basic overview of the twin cape cities. Upcoming stories will delve into specific details about the life anglers and boaters can enjoy in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, as well as some of the interesting initiatives local business and community leaders are pursuing. In the meantime, here’s our quick overview of Los Cabos, a paradise for anglers and mariners alike.

WHERE TO DOCK There are two places for boaters to find a slip in Cabo San Lucas: Marina Del Rey, which is near the harbor entrance, and Marina Cabo San Lucas (an IGY marina). Marina Del Rey is the smaller of the two boating destinations, with 25 available slips, but the family-run operation certainly makes anyone who visits here feel like they are home. The marina has its own fuel dock. Many of the local rental companies also operate out of Marina Del Rey – so docking here means you’ll be close to some of the people who’d take you out on an excursion. All the waterfront dining establishments are also a short walk away from Marina Del Rey. Marina Cabo San Lucas, meanwhile, features 380 slips and several amenities for its renters. Don’t be surprised, by the way, if you cross paths with a sea lion – there are plenty of pinnipeds swimming around the harbor. Some of them will even follow you to your slip. 34

WHERE TO STAY There is a wide range of lodging available in Cabo San Lucas. One of the more upscale destinations is Hacienda Beach Club and Residences. The most basic room available at the Hacienda, which is a gated property with private access to the adjacent beach, is a one-bedroom suite (complete with a fully functional kitchen). Hacienda Beach Club and Residences has been completely re-done; one of the oldest and most recognizable hotel properties at Cabo San Lucas is now a modern five-star property overlooking the Sea of Cortez. The hotel is walking distance to the beach and harbor. A few of the restaurants mentioned in the section below are also walking distance from the Hacienda. Hotels immediately nearby the Hacienda are Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort and Spa, Cabo Villas Beach Resort and Spa, Marina Sol condos, Bahia Hotel and Beach Club, Casa Dorado Los Cabos, Pueblo Bonito Los Cabos Beach Resort and Marina Fiesta Resort and Spa. Farther outside of town are Hard Rock Hotel and Nobu Hotel, both of which are located at Playa El Suspiro and Diamante Cabo San Lucas. Boaters looking for familiar hotel chains can find a pair of Hyatt properties and a Holiday Inn at San Jose del Cabo; there is also a Fairfield Inn at Cabo San Lucas.

WHERE TO EAT Culinary options exist almost anywhere and everywhere in Cabo San Lucas. The question is not where you will go eat – it’s, which places will I save for the next trip! Stray a little bit off the waterfront and you’ll find a trio of restaurants worth trying at some point during your visit: Edith’s, Tres Sirenas Cocina del Mar and Bar Esquina at Hotel Bahia. All three restaurants are within a stone’s throw of each other. Edith’s is the heavyweight here, which fuses Baja California and Guerrero cuisines. Come here for the steaks, locally caught seafoods and handmade tortillas. Daytime eating will offer you views of Medano Beach and El Arco, while nighttime dining features a romantic atmosphere of candlelit tables and palapas.

Captain Tony’s at Fisherman’s Landing is one of the most frequented seafood destinations on the waterfront. The restaurant certainly offers traditional Mexican f lair, such as chile relleno, fajitas and enchiladas. There are also soups, salads, pastas, and even a hamburger – but seafood is the name of the game here. Cabo Fish and Chips is beer battered yellowtail served with French fries, while Coconut Shrimp is a coconut-breaded shrimp served with mango sauce, rice and vegetables. The Captain Tony’s Fish item is a steamed fish served with shrimp, veggies and herbs.

WHERE TO PLAY There is no shortage of nightlife in Cabo San Lucas. Portions of the central business district, which is walking distance from the city’s marinas, feel no different than Miami’s South Beach or the Las Vegas Strip. One place to visit in Cabo San Lucas’s central business district: Slims Elbow Room, which is known as the world’s smallest bar. There are only four stools at Slims Elbow Room. You can literally walk from one end of the bar to the other end within 2 seconds. Stand on the sidewalk at the bar’s entrance, take two paces in and you’ve walked as far into the bar as you can. Slims Elbow Room is located at Plaza Mariachis, Paseo de la Marina Boulevard. Other bars in the business district include The Giggling Marlin, El Squid Roe, Mandala Los Cabos, Saloon, Harbard, The Jungle Bar and Cabo Blue Bar and Grill. Cabo San Lucas, of course, is much more than a party town (even if some might tell you otherwise). There are plenty of activities to do during the day, whether it is aboard your boat, at one of the many beaches in town or a short trip to areas on the city’s periphery. Sportfishing is, hands down, one of the most popular pastimes here in Cabo San Lucas. There are several fishing tournaments happening here every year – the most famous one being Bisbee’s Black and Blue Tournament (which takes place Oct. 23-27 this year). Walk anywhere along the waterfront and you’ll find no shortage of solicitors trying to sell you a fishing trip. Each solicitor will

tell you they know where all the hot fishing spots are – only to find out they will take you to the same places as everyone else. Purchase a fishing trip from a solicitor, hop on a pre-planned charter or just navigate your own boat – whatever you decide, there are plenty of fish in the Sea (of Cortez). Some of the fish species anglers come here to catch include marlin, wahoo, amberjack, bonita, cabrilla, mahi mahi, roosterfish, sailfish, yellowfin and yellowtail. Head slightly east (toward San Jose del Cabo) and you’ll find Bahia Chileno (which is also home to Playa El Chileno). Bahia Chileno is a perfect bay to drop anchor and f loat in place while you enjoy a meal on your deck or choose to drop a line in the water for some casual fishing. Diamante Cabo San Lucas is a mustvisit for anyone who loves to hit the links. This waterfront destination is more than a golf course and resort: there is also a Nobu Hotel and Restaurant on the beach (Playa El Suspiro). Don’t forget to visit the most famous “playas” of Los Cabos: Lovers Beach and Divorce Beach, both of which are located next to El Arco, the famous arch-shaped rock formation at the farthest edge of Baja California. El Arco, as it were, is also considered the official dividing line between the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Cortez (aka Gulf of California). Faro Viejo – an old lighthouse on the far edge of town – is worth checking out. The property itself can’t be accessed by land, but if you are on your boat, head out to the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas and head toward Playa El Suspiro and the Diamante resort area. You’ll see Faro Viejo (which literally means “old lighthouse”) on the bluff overlooking the water, before you reach the Diamante resort area. It’s definitely worth navigating this way and viewing a rare piece of Baja California’s ruins. Is art your thing? Then head to San Jose del Cabo’s Gallery District, where you can visit several galleries as part of the local Art Walk. Destinations include Casa Dahlia Gallery, The Sacristia Art & History, Ivan Guaderrama Art Gallery, Frank Arnold Galler y and Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery. SEAMAGAZINE.COM APRIL/MAY 2020

‘WHERE ARE ALL THE WOMEN?’

Gail Hine has many fond memories helming this 24-foot Nightingale sailboat, Hummer, including winning the Marina del Rey to San Diego race in 1984.

SAILING CONVENTION PROMOTES WOMEN IN SAILING FOR 30 YEARS

Gail Hine created the convention 30 years ago to educate and promote women interested in sailing; the annual convention has now had decades of success. BY LINDSEY GLASGOW

CORONA DEL MAR—A 30-SOMETHING-YEAR-OLD GAIL Hine didn’t mind being one of only a few women in a room full of men in the 1970s and 80s. They taught her how to sail after all and she wanted to learn from them. In her spare time in the early 80s, Gail Hine could be found at the helm of Hummer, a 24-foot, Nightingale sailboat. When she was on the water, she wasn’t cruising, she was racing. The role required an unwavering concentration; finding the sweet spot with the wind could be the difference between second and first place. “I liked steering the boat the best, for me being on the helm and steering the boat is the place I had to be,” Hine recalled. Fast forward several decades to 2020 and Hine is still at the helm, but no longer of a boat, instead a 30-year-old successful convention, now called Sailing Convention for Women. “It’s been a nice community to spend my recreational life in and some of my professional life,” Hine said. Hine, who was the first woman to attain a number of positions and awards in the Southern California yachting community, is as humble as they come. She was the first woman to serve as Southern California Yachting Association director, commodore of Redondo Beach Yacht Club (1980-81) and president of Recreational Boaters of California (1994). She was the first woman SEAMAGAZINE.COM APRIL/MAY 2020

recipient of the ‘Peggy Slater Award’ in 1990, Women’s Sailing Association’s ‘Marilyn Butefish Award,’ SCYA’s ‘Warren Ewert Trophy,’ Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs’ ‘Yachtsman of the Year,’ the Pacific Coast Yachting Association’s ‘Charles A. Langlais Trophy,’ SCYA’s 1998 ‘James Webster Trophy’ for outstanding contributions to the yachting community, and BCYC’s Newport Yachtsman of the Year in 1998 and 2002. “I’m a Capricorn,” Hine said laughing, alluding to the characteristics of the zodiac sign, of which ambitious tops the list. “It’s my personality.” Hine has been a leading force in promoting women’s sailing in Southern California for more than four decades. She has held various volunteer positions, including serving 27 years on the Board of Directors of Recreational Boaters of California (19812008), advocating for boater-related issues to state and local governments. She grew up in suburban Illinois where she occasionally went sailing with her father and participated in a local league in high school. It wasn’t until 1968, when she moved to Southern California with her husband, that her involvement in sailing really bloomed. “We were living Redondo Beach and I said well I used to sail,” Hine said. “Maybe we should look into sailing.” The couple bought a small boat and joined Palos Verdes Yacht Club, which is now Redondo Beach Yacht Club, as a way to plug into their new community. The decision was a recreational one; as Hine continued working as a graphic designer, later going on to build her own business, Teamway Marketing and Design. Hine learned how to sail and quickly learned she preferred racing to simply cruising; she would later go on to win the Marina del Rey to San Diego race in 1984. “I like excitement of making the turns and interacting with the other boats,” Hine said. Hine was finding her stride in her new community in the late 70s and wondered why there weren’t more women involved. “I was at Redondo Beach Yacht Club and there were hardly any women out there doing this and I said where are all the 38

There are hardly any women out there doing this and I said where are all the other women? other women?” Hine began organizing a series of seminars at the yacht club for women. “I just started on my own with the boys at the club, let’s get some women to go sailing,” Hine said. “I said if you teach it and work on the mechanics of it, I’ll organize it.” The seminars started in 1975 and took off from there. “It was super successful,” Hine said. “I started with three, went to four, went to five, went to six.” Hine was eventually asked by SCYC to chair a women’s sailing committee for the Southern California boating community and she quickly got to work gathering women, crafting goals and starting a newsletter. It was in organizing this committee that Hine got the idea to start a convention, with the first event held in 1990. SCYC sponsored the event for the first 27 years. Current Women’s Sailing Convention Co-Chair Kathie Arnold, who had been sailing since she was 16-yearsold, learned about the convention through the newsletter in 1991. “I was getting her newsletter and I thought I’ve got to meet this gal, I’ve just got to meet her,” Arnold said. It took only one convention for Arnold to get involved. She taught workshops for many years and has served as the second in command since 1992. Arnold boasts quite a resume herself. She lived on a 36-foot sailboat in the Mediterranean, crossed the Atlantic, spent eight months in West Indies and Caribbean and a year in Florida. She held a U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain›s License for many years, worked as a Charter Captain and taught at OCC Sailing Center for Seamanship in Newport Beach. She won Southern California Yachting Association’s Peggy Slater Award in 2000 and the National Women’s Sailing Association/Boat US

Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award in 2016. From women who have sailed the world to successful racers and fellow women sailing advocates, the convention draws about two dozen instructors from multiple states, all who also boast impressive experience, with about 40 percent holding a U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain’s License. The event also attracts attendees from around the U.S. Other organizations from around the country have even used the event as a model to create their own. “Since she did this, other states started their own conventions,” Arnold said. “Look at what she started.” “This event has spawned four or five other events,” Hine said. Hine said a workshop crafted for the convention has even inspired a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary course. The “Suddenly Single-Handed” workshop at the Sailing Convention for Women puts participants in a scenario where they are on their way to Catalina Island when the other person onboard with them falls down the companionway and breaks an arm. The workshop teaches participants what they should do. Similarly, the USCG offers a “Suddenly In Command” class, which teaches participants what to do in case of an emergency, such as the captain falling overboard. More information can be found online at sailingconventionforwomen.com/. Organizations such as the Women’s Sailing Association also provide year-round resources for women interested in sailing. Hine remains deeply involved in the administrative side of sailing - serving as the Director of the National Women’s Sailing Association / Women’s Sailing Foundation and member of WSA-OC - and still runs her graphic design business in Murrieta. “It’s a sport you can start at seven and you can do it to 77,” Hine said.

QUICK ESCAPE

TWO DAYS TO REMEMBER

WILDLIFE COVE, GREGORY ISLAND

An unnamed and protected anchorage off Gregory Island offers mountain vistas and an abundance of wildlife. BY DEANE HISLOP

A THIN LAYER OF SUSPENDED clouds lies just above the water’s surface, and the towering peaks and snow fields of British Columbia’s Coast Mountains come into view as we enter Kingcome Inlet in the Broughton Islands. Our destination is an unnamed cove on the chart. We name it, for good reason, Wildlife Cove. It’s a small one-boat anchorage in the lee of a hook-shaped peninsula on the north side of Gregory Island. Our plan is to spend a couple of nights anchored in the tiny cove and explore Moore Bay by dinghy, do some hiking, and enjoy the scenery and wildlife. Kingcome Inlet is a 17-mile-long waterway that glaciers carved thousands of years ago. Majestic mountains, some of whose tops remain snow covered late into the summer, rise 40

nearly vertical from the sea floor. Some snow fields are visible all year. Huge granite cliffs and cascading waterfalls add to the spectacular scenery. As we set the anchor in 40 feet of water over a quickly shoaling mud bottom, a kingfisher rattles his territorial call. Two shiny round-headed harbor seals pop up for a curious look to see who or what is invading their cove, and a bald eagle flies overhead. Its call welcomes us to its home (as far as Arlene and I are concerned). Once the anchor is set, we have an unobstructed view across Kingcome Inlet. It’s easy to see why the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations people are proud to call the Kingcome Inlet area home. Later that morning a couple of hummingbirds buzz Easy Goin’s national flag, hanging from the stern, thinking it is the mother of all nectar-providing flowers. Moore Bay is one of those special places that merits lingering. The water is milky green from the glacial outflow of the inlet. It’s a good spot to sit on the deck and do

Arlene and I launch the dinghy to check the bay for other potential anchorages. As we slowly motor 1.9 miles across the bay to a small BC Forest Service recreation float, two dozen white-sided dolphins approach us to check out the strange intruder. A sign

on the float reads “No vessels over 14 feet in length.” At the head of the ramp, a trail leads to four campsites with picnic tables, campfire pits, benches, a pit toilet and Cultural trees, which have been bark-stripped for use by First Nations people. Hiking trails lead into the interior. Hikers should remember that black and grizzly bears reside in the area, so take the proper precautions. Some cruising guides report Forest Service

mooring buoys can be found near the dock, but we don’t see them during our visit. A second anchorage, which is occupied, is located east of the easternmost island, in a bay that appears to provide protection from easterlies in 50 feet over a mud bottom. We surmise this is the boat that placed a couple of prawn traps in the bay. A third anchorage lies on the west side of the bay between Gregory and Thief islands and provides shelter from breezes from the west. We had anchored here on a past visit and found the holding excellent in 30 to 35 feet over a sand and shell bottom. After checking out the potential anchorages and enjoying lunch back aboard Easy Goin’ we head out to explore the passage that leads to Shawl Bay. This narrow waterway, with a minimum depth of approximately two feet, can be navigated by most boats at mid-tide. ART OF DOING NOTHING By midafternoon a weather front moves through and it begins to rain. The payoff is a magnificent rainbow that connects Thief Island to the mainland. We spend the balance of the day aboard Easy Goin’ and sip on our favorite beverages and admire the spectacular view before barbecuing dinner. After a fine dinner, we sit on deck and watch the setting sun turn the Coast Mountains different shades of pink and red. While preparing breakfast the following day, Arlene spots a humpback whale in the bay, a photo opportunity that definitely delays breakfast. We spend the rest of the day relaxing, absorbing the warm summer sun, being entertained by the local wildlife, enjoying the breathtaking view and reading a couple good books. Just our kind of boating.

outdoors accessories, seminars and family-friendly activities. The Del Mar show marks the final Fred Hall Show production of this year; the Long Beach show went on as originally scheduled, March 4-8. Doors at the Del Mar Fairgrounds open May 21; the show continues through May 24. More than 500 vendor booths will be in attendance and 200-some seminars will be featured at this year’s show. Attendees will also be able to peruse hundreds of boats on display. Fred Hall Shows’ Del Mar event originally started at the Golden Hall in Downtown San Diego. The exposition now features nearly one million square feet of indoor and outdoor space filled with boats, campers, RVs and other outdoors equipment. Highlighting this year’s show are several family fun activities, such as the Okuma Bass Tank, Mammoth Lakes Seminar Area, Hobie Kayak Fishing Theater, Show Up and Blow Up contest area, and archery. All of these activities will be in the Bing Crosby Hall. Speakers will present hourly at the seminar areas, while the Show Up

46

and Blow Up contest will occur at different times each day. Contestants at the Show Up and Blow Up competition will be asked to blow up a Hobie i11S Inflatable Kayak in the shortest amount of time. The person with the shortest time at show’s end will win the i11S kayak. The contest was also held at the Long Beach show, so those contestants will also be eligible. Wake sports and personal watercrafts will be a significant feature of this year’s Del Mar show. The boat section at Del Mar Fairgrounds will feature a full line of towboats. Also on display will be ocean fishing boats, pontoons, bass boats, bow riders, aluminum boats and kayaks. Most of these boats will be on display in the O’Brien building, but you will find some boats in the Bing Crosby Hall, as well. The Seaside Pavilion will be home to the Rollo Kids at Sea Spin to Win wheel, Accurate Fishing Products main seminar stage, Daiwa Saltwater Tank and Kid’s Touch Tank. The Daiwa Saltwater Tank has filtered seawater and features fish from the marine biology department at California State University, Northridge. Accurate

Fishing, meanwhile, will host regional anglers demonstrating their fishing techniques and special tricks. New to the 2020 show is OPKIX, which is advertised as the world’s smallest, smartest wearable camera. The OPKIX camera is for anglers who want to record their catches. The hands-free camera can be worn on your hat, sunglasses or finger (similar to a ring). OPKIX will have all of its products on display at Seaside Pavilion. OPKIX is also sponsoring the Paul Bunyon Lumberjack Show. In the Exhibit Hall is where most of the fishing tackle will be displayed. Hundreds of booths with fishing, hunting and outdoor themes are expected to be at the Del Mar show. Some of the vendor you could expect to find inside Exhibit Hall are Fisherman’s Landing, Anglers Choice, Fisherman’s Access, Fisherman’s Tackle, Turner’s Outdoorsman and Squidco. While you are in Exhibit Hall be sure to check out Costa Sporting Chef Café, where Scott Leysath and Tommy Gomes (aka The Fishmonger) will be on hand to cook and pass out samples of fish and game recipes. DRY DOCKING SYSTEMS IN MARINA DEL REY HARBOR RELEASED

Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors tested an in-water dry docking system over the course of a year to get a better understanding of its capabilities, maintenance requirements and ability to serve as a potential alternative to antifouling paints. By Lindsey Glasgow

MARINA DEL REY—Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors (DBH) recently released a report summarizing a pilot program testing out an in-water dry docking system for its capabilities, maintenance requirements and ability to serve as a potential alternative to antifouling paints. The county has been looking for ways to reduce the amount of dissolved copper in the harbor and in-water dry docking has been identified as one potential method. The harbor is on the state’s 303(d) list of impaired water bodies due to several pollutants, including dissolved copper. 48

The Marina del Rey Marina Toxic Pollutants Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) estimates approximately 94 percent of the dissolved copper is coming from passive leaching of antifouling paints, with the other 6 percent coming from boat hull cleaning. The county is hoping

to reduce the copper in the harbor’s water column by 85 percent by March 2024. In-water dry docking systems work by separating the hull of the boat from the water without lifting the boat out of the water. These systems consist of a bottom liner that envelops the submerged hull of a boat, a floating frame and a pump to keep the hull dry when docked at the slip. The cost for a FAB Dock, an in-water dry docking manufacturer, ranges from approximately $7,000 to $21,000, depending on boat size. However, custom build models can cost as much as $55,000. A local community group, the Sea Scouts, piloted one of FAB Dock’s in-water dry docking systems between Sept. 2018

The Sea Scouts reported in the recently released “In-Water Dry Docking Systems Pilot Study Report” that the FAB Dock worked well, kept the boat bottom clean, and was easy to use. During the one-year pilot, the bottom of the device was never cleaned, and there was no need to clean the boat bottom while it was kept in the device, according to the pilot study report. The Sea Scouts did report the FAB Dock was damaged towards the end of the pilot study, but did not disclose what had specifically caused the damage. The bottom of the liner had been punctured, possibly by the boat’s motor, the pilot study report said. At the end of the trial period, the device was pulled out. “The device was pulled out of the water by two men, without additional support,

and without moving the boat out of the slip,” the pilot study report said. Once out of the water, the larger fouling growth - tunicates and mollusks - on the bottom of the FAB Dock was removed by hand. The rest – such as algae – was sprayed off with a hose. “The manual growth removal and hose rinse was effective, removing about 95% of the fouling,” the pilot study stated. “Organisms came off easily and did not leave any marks on the material.” Photos of the marine growth on the FAB Dock after one year in the water in the harbor as well as more information collected from the pilot program can be found in the pilot study report at bit. ly/37MhoPQ. The county continues to study in-water

dry docking systems to assess the product’s maintenance requirements and potential cost savings. DBH purchased two new in-water dry docks for use by private boaters in county-managed Anchorage 47; DBH will assess the devices over a threeyear pilot period. The first was installed in June 2019 for a 1991 Beneteau powerboat with 28-foot length, 10-foot beam, and twin stern drives. The FAB Dock was purchased for $12,990 (the lowest cost bid). The second was installed in October 2019. The boater volunteered to participate with a 2006 Safe Boat Defender, 26-foot length, 8-foot beam, with a twin outboard. Only one bid was received, which was from FAB Dock, at a cost of $10,735. “It is the county’s hope that through implementing pilots of these options, other marinas in MdRH might be inspired to follow similar models of offering a dry docking system as an add-on service for slip rentals,” the pilot study report stated.

PORT HUENEME: THE PLEASURE CRAFT HARBOR THAT NEVER WAS BY PARIMAL M. ROHIT

PORT HUENEME—The second word in the city of Port Hueneme, located just south of Oxnard and short drive northwest of Malibu, might be one of the hardest words for people to pronounce. Did you know the Port of Port Hueneme, which is one of the busiest harbors in California, could have been home to hundreds of recreational boats? “A History of the Los Angeles District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1898-1965” explained the Port of Port Hueneme was originally designed for pleasure craft. Today it is one of the busiest commercial and naval ports on the West Coast. “Originally the plans in 1940 called for Port Hueneme to accommodate pleasure craft, but requirements of national defense which resulted from World War II converted the choice harbor into a valuable naval facility,” an entry in the book of Army Corps history stated. “Fortunately, an admirable substitute, Channel Islands Harbor, was developed as a by-product included in a solution by [the Los Angeles District] for the problem created by Port Hueneme, for, north of the port, sand produced by the alteration of wave patterns threatened to destroy Port Hueneme.” Ventura County, of course, would have one more harbor district come online – Ventura Port. The northernmost harbor in Ventura County was originally called Ventura Marina Port District. Santa Barbara, on a separate note, could have had a harbor in Goleta or Carpenteria, according to the book of Army Corps history. “Overcrowding and other problems produced a request for a preliminary study involving consideration of three harbor sites – Goleta, Carpenteria, or the expansion of the existing Santa Barbara for future development,” the history book stated. “Construction at Goleta and Carpenteria was not justified, but in 1962 authorization to tripe the size of the Santa Barbara Harbor was approved.”

ASK A BROKER

BROKERAGE ADVICE

QUESTION: What is one question every seller should be willing to ask a broker, and that every broker better have a good answer for?

Information should be provided regarding anything unusual about the boat or if it needs to be detailed for “curb” appeal. Continued engagement with the potential buyer should also be relayed. A seller should feel that an inquiry about the status of their listing is welcomed by the broker and will be responded to in a timely manner. Often, the sale of a yacht includes plans to purchase another, or marks a change in the owner’s life path. Whatever the motivation, change begets a sense of uncertainty. When a broker is willing to engage in the process of active communication, it strengthens an atmosphere of trust. And trust benefits all parties.

By Gretchen Miles, Waterline Boats/Boatshed Everett EVERY SELLER SHOULD pose the question: “Can I rely on you to regularly, accurately and thoroughly report all data and activity related to my listing?”

A good broker should forthrightly show the owner how many individuals have visited the vessel and have viewed it online, and should relay communications with potential buyers. For example, I’m able to meet with my sellers and show them a complete overview of all online activity related to their listing. My sellers also have the ability to watch this activity via their own online “Owners’ Portal.” With this information, and collaboration between the seller and the broker, the sales effort can be tuned to achieve the desired outcome. Communication is key. Sellers should receive updates from their broker at least once a month via email or a personal conversation. Timely updates on each showing should also be provided, such as notifying sellers of each scheduled showing in advance, when anyone is onboard, and when the showing has concluded.

How soon is too soon to start working with a broker? How long are most of them willing to work with someone who isn’t ready at the moment to buy a boat? It is wise to connect with a broker early in your process. It may take a while to fully discern which boat will meet your needs and a broker typically has personal experience and empathy in this process. Brokers have a broad perspective of boats, the current market and experience with numerous transactions. Alongside a broker, you will explore various styles of boats and yachts. We offer recommendations and insights on potential choices to avoid the pitfall of a “mis-fit,” and provide objectivity and guidance in the buying process. Brokers are also an excellent resource for learning and connecting with additional experts throughout your boating career. It’s never too soon to begin discovering how much fun life can be when out on the water!
