Red lights in the Atlantic
you to avoid
What one Twitter user described as “red sky at night, shepherds delight, red sky in the morning, global warming” were actually strange red lights spotted from a commercial plane over the Atlan tic. The unusual scene had Twitter a flut ter in July with theories ranging from global warming to Godzilla and the Up sideADown.poston Reddit went viral in late July when a pilot took photos of mysteri ous red lights that seemed to be coming f rom the ocean surface while flying over the Atlantic and shared them on a Red dit forum under r/Damnthatsinteresting. The internet then went to work to fig ure out whether those lights were the sign of the coming apocalypse or life imitating art with a rift opening us up to a new di mension like in the popular show Strang er Things.“IfI’m not wrong, the first DOOM game was set in 2022, so this is it. There comes the demons. There is the end...” said one Reddit user. L ike most things, there is an actu al terrestrial explanation for the strange lights, fishing boats. Commercial fishing vessels fishing for Pacific saury use LED fishing lamps to draw the fish to the surface. The vessels have LED lights that stretch the length of the ship to draw the their target fish to the surface. According to Nature World News, LED fishing lamps are more effective and safer for fishermen because they produce less heat and ultraviolet light than filament bulbs. In an interview with CNN, Neil Ja cobs, Ph.D., weather modeling expert, told Jeanne Moos that the fishing vessels using the bright lights are most definitely the cause of the mysterious lights. Jacobs told Moos that he entered the flight’s location and date into Globalfish ingwatch.org and could see fishing ves sels by name. This is not the first time these lights have been called into question. A simi lar sighting was noted by a pilot travel ing from Seattle to Japan in 2020, and there has been footage from the Interna tional Space Station of hundreds of fish ing boats off the coast of Cambodia, ac cording to Nature World News, meaning the lights can be seen from outer space. This effectively solves the mystery of the spooky red lights. Even though there is a logical explana tion, the internet definitely had their fun speculating on the strange occurrence.

On Sept. 2, 2013, marathon swimmer Diana Nyad became the first person to swim from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, Florida, without a shark cage. Nyad was 64 when she completed a dream 35 years in the making, swimming 110 miles through shark and jellyfish-infested waters of the Straits of Florida in approximately 53 hours. The swimmer had already attempted the trek four times, the first at age 28 in 1978, twice in 2011, and once in 2012. Her trip was cut short each time when mother nature threw in unexpected twists, like dangerous swells, jellyfish stings, andBystorms.the time 2013 rolled around, Nyad had decided this would be her last attempt. So she jumped in the water at the Havana Yacht Club at 8:59 a.m. on Aug. 31, shouting, “Courage!” according to a Sept. 2, 2013, article from The Guardian, and then walked onto a Florida beach at roughly 2 p.m. local time on Sept. 2 to cheers and shouts of joy.According to CNN, Nyad was greeted by a crowd of supporters who cheered and held signs to celebrate her record-breaking swim. Many supporters were wading in the water or in kayaks or standing along the shoreline as the swimmer stumbled on shore.“Ihave three messages: one is we should never ever give up; two is you are never too old to chase your dreams; and three is it looks like a solitary sport, but it is a team,” said Nyad to a group of waiting news crews before being led to an ambulance for medical treatment, according to the BBC.

Nyad only stopped swimming during breaks for food or water, which were doled out through a tube from her 35-person support team. The support boat forged ahead, clearing the path of box jellyfish, which stopped her last swim, and trailing a line behind it for Nyad to follow to ensure she stayed on course through the swim. About two miles off the shore of Florida, Nyad stopped long enough to thank her team and acknowledge their support while taking a moment to savor the completion of a life-long dream.
“I am about to swim my last two miles in the ocean,” said Nyad in a blog post on her website. “This is a lifelong dream of mine, and I’m very, very glad to be with Nyadyou.”has worked as a sports broadcaster and journalist for National Public Radio, ABC’S Wide World of Sports, and otherShepublications.currentlyworks as a public speaker and has published a memoir, “Find a Way,” detailing her story of breaking the record. LOS ANGELES — The Port of Los Angeles will host a marine flare collection event on Sept. 10 from 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the Newmark’s Yacht Centre in Wilmington. Participants are asked to place marine flares in the trunk of their vehicle with a maximum weight of 30 pounds of flares per vehicle. E-flare and West Marine coupons will be available while supplies last, in addition to a free California Boater Kit voucher for all who participate. Eligible participants include residents, businesses, or berth boats located within L.A. County. Accepted flares are hand-held, aerial, and smoke signals. Not accepted items include electronic flares or electronics, military-type flares, or any hazardous wastes such as paint, batteries, or oil. Proof of eligibility, such as license, registration, or slip fee, is required. Disposing of marine flares is important to do safely because pyrotechnics are classified as 1.4 explosives by the Department of Transportation. In addition, unexploded expired marine flares are a health and safety hazard and contain perchlorates, a known environmental hazard. For more information on the effects of perchlorates, visit dtsc.ca.gov/perchlorate-fact-sheet/.https://

RE: Lake Perris to Have New Marina Operation (JULY 8- 21)
: While Todd Matthews, owner of Rec-Out SoCal, stated he had hoped for jet ski rentals, it was not approved. According to John Rowe, superintendent of California State Parks Inland Empire/Perris sector, the marina does not rent Jet Skis and has no intention of doing“Asso.far as JetSki operation, we have law enforcement that patrols the lake and make[s] enforcement contacts,” said Rowe. “Some contacts result in a citation being issued with a fine over $450. I cannot remember the last time we had a fatality with a JetSki involved. It has been at least seven or eight years to my memory. The lake is a small reservoir and is extremely busy. Every weekend this summer, we have closed the lake to boats by 10 a.m. because we hit boat capacity, which is 450 vessels. Despite having so many vessels in such a small area, it is relatively safe.”
“My three favorite marinas in Mexico are (1.) Marina CostaBaja in La Paz, due to its WX safety, security, and good location; (2.) Paradise Village Marina at Puerto Vallarta, for its comfort and security, and (3.) Marina Isla Navidad at Barra de Navidad for WX safety and ambiance.
The boat owner may be worried about the 52-foot Sea Ray’s fuel range for getting safely down the outside of Baja. As my last Mexico Report pointed out, after the three nice, safe marinas and two fuel docks in Ensenada, it’s about 770 n.m. further down Baja to reach the Los Cabos region (Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo) with four nice, safe marinas and three fuel docks. The boat’s ability to make it safely down to Los Cabos and the 37 marinas beyond all depends on how many gallons of diesel the Sea Ray carries and what RPMs the engine(s) are safely pulled back to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. Along the Baja coastline, any boat running too fast could burn all its fuel before reaching the next fuel dock.

Question: “This sounds amazing. Been coming to the lake almost every weekend in the summer for the last three years. Would love a place to park my boat and eat. However, not happy with jet ski rentals. The lake has become very dangerous from the jet ski riders. They drive recklessly. Don’t follow the rules of the lake and almost hit my kids in the water many times. They get too close and don’t respect the orange flags that a boat has up. To remind other vessels not to come close. How do you plan on keeping it safe?”

Answer—Craig
QUESTION: I have two young children who participate in youth sailing activities at our yacht club in Northern California. I love getting them involved in sailing and in the yachting community, but I have increasing concerns about the lack of professionalism in these programs. The boats often have broken, or missing parts and I am not convinced that the volunteer instructors really know what they are doing. What kind of liability can they face if someone gets hurt? Does the fact that the students are all young kids make a difference? Do volunteer instructors face liability if a kid gets hurt?

ANSWER: I should first note to our reader that, if he is this concerned about the safety of his club’s youth sailing program, he should take his kids out of the program and talk to club leadership about his concerns. Asking me about liability can wait. His questions about liability are raised in anticipation of something breaking or someone getting hurt. “Liability” in this context refers to the process of holding someone responsible for their negligent acts or omissions. So, let’s start with an understanding of the legal elements of a claim for negligence. An evaluation of negligence starts with the establishment of a “duty of care,” by asking whether a hypothet-

ical reasonable person in the same situation would have done anything differently. This is a complicated analysis that often requires the assistance of expert witnesses.Theactions of the person facing liability are then balanced against the actions of the person who was hurt, looking through the same lens. Were they also negligent? Under both California Law and General Maritime Law, liability for negligence may be offset under the doctrine of “comparative fault,” where a judge or jury may assign a percentage of fault to the injured party if they were also negligent. We may find, however, that an assignment of some amount of fault to an injured student is unlikely in the context of a youth sailing program. In evaluating an injury in a youth sailing program such as this, we also need to consider the relationship between the young student and the adult instructor. Under such a relationship, the instructor is usually in a position of trust over the student, which may give rise to a higher duty of care under the “Special RelationshipWhenDoctrine.”evaluating a negligence case, the general duty of care usually does not include an affirmative duty to act for the protection of another. This may change, however, if the person stands in some special relationship to the person who is foreseeably at risk. The Special Relationship Doctrine carves out an exception to the general rule that there is no duty to act for the protection of a third party. The doctrine recognizes that certain socially recognized relationships exist which constitute the basis for an increased legal duty. A youth sailing program will probably give rise to such a relationship.Thecomparison of a person’s behavior against a hypothetical duty of care will look at a very wide range of activities. For example, our reader was concerned about the skills of the instructors, but also about the physical condition of the boats. These two issues can merge under the Special Relationship Doctrine if, for example, a student is injured because of a broken or poorly maintained part of the boat. The bottom line in response to our reader’s question is that everyone, including instructors in a youth sailing program, may be held liable for their failure to meet a standard of care in almost any activity, where that failure damages or injures someone.

“We share the grief of the faculty, staff, and students who worked to care for, study, and conserve these animals,” U.C. Davis said in a statement. The fish were found dead on Aug. 16 in several tanks at the Center for Aquatic Biology and Aquaculture, which is home to research programs focused on sustaining California’s aquatic species and supporting sustainable aquaculture production, according to the center’s website. Dr. Laurie Brignolo, executive director of the Research and Teaching Animal Care Program at U.C. Davis, said university officials believe the source of the chlorine was a chlorination system used to decontaminate water with fish pathogens. If that was the source, university officials do not know how the chlorine ended up in the fish tanks. One explanation could be that a backup in the waterline system caused the chlorine to move in the wrong direction.
VETERAN SO CAL YACHT BROKER LAUNCHES THE ENGAUSER GROUP, INC.
The center was built in the 1950s and had never had such “an all-encompassing loss” of fish, Dr. Brignolo said. Workers must complete daily quality assurance examinations on the pump and the water going through. The night before the loss, Dr. Brignolo confirmed that the fish had been inspected. However, overnight, enough chlorine had entered the tanks comparable to the amount in tap water which is a dangerously high amount for fish. Fish are not supposed to be kept in water containing even small quantities of the chemical. The chlorine damaged the sensitive gills and skin of the center’s various fish species, including green and white sturgeon and Chinook salmon, which are endangered. Within 12 hours, almost all of the fish were Researchersdead. and graduate students have been using the fish to study the effects of disease and environmental changes on specific species. The considerable loss of fish at the center won’t completely shut down researchers’ studies, but it will significantly set them back for years.

DAVIS — A dangerous amount of chlorine entered the tanks where fish were kept at an aquatic research center at the University of California, Davis, on Aug. 15, killing about 21,000 fish. The university said it would inves tigate “where our process failed” and initiate an independent external review.
“We are pleased to work with our federal partners in this third year of unprecedented drought to benefit winter-run Chinook salmon at this stage of their life cycle,” said Reclamation Regional Director Ernest Conant in an Aug. 3 press release. “Implementing this unique strategy at this critical time is essential to their survival.” With the help of these chillers, the hatchery will continue to deliver a critical safety net for winter-run Chinook salmon while in-river conditions stay poor. Water temperatures must be maintained below 56 degrees for winter-run reproduction to thrive; the chilling units will cool the hatchery’s water supply up to 20 degrees at 3,000 gallons per minute. Since water supply to the hatchery is drawn directly from Shasta Dam, there are intricate exchanges between the water temperatures in the hatchery and dam operations. As a result, technicians on-site monitor the chilling units 24 hours a day to ensure success. The contract to install, maintain and monitor the chilling units was awarded to Montcal, LLC, a joint venture between Native American and economically disadvantaged women-owned small businesses.

OCEANSIDE— On Aug. 15, the Oceanside Harbor and Beaches Advisory Committee moved to recommend the harbor safety plan, presented by city staff, to the city council to be heard later this month. The approval was in a six-to-one vote and was made with the caveat that the fire department or lifeguards would re port back to the HBAC within six months of the completion of the transition to see how the plan was going.
“At the HBAC meetings, I would like an update of how the transition is going on,” said HBAC Chair Liz Rhea. “This can be anything, somebody from the life guards... or the harbor manager. But we need to know so that the harbor slip rent ers and everybody in the harbor know what’s going on. It is going to be an uphill battle; it is a learning curve.”
T he estimated overall cost for the safety plan would be the assumed annu al cost of $2.69 million based on the cur rent fiscal year. This would save almost $100,000 a year compared to the current police-based model, which sits at approx imately $2.79 million.

Oceanside Harbor and Beaches Advisory Committee Moves to
The HBAC held off on acting when the plan was first presented in March of this year to have city staff look at the option of reducing 24-hour shifts to 8-hour shifts, assessing the best accommodations for overnight lifeguard staff, and looking at the feasibility of removing fire captains from the plan. City staff came back and proposed in terim staff housing in the Marina Suites until permanent placement can be found. This would cost $8,300 a month. City staff continued to recommend the 24-hour shifts, as they found the longer shift to be more cost effective in the long run, and the use of fire captains to pro vide advanced firefighting and paramed ic/EMT level medical skills.
C ity staff plans to present the safety plan to the city council at their meeting later this month. If approved, they would immediately begin rolling out the transi tion and expect to be in full function in 2023.
Oceanside’s proposed harbor safety plan will move to the city council for implementation later in September. Shutterstock
The harbor would have to hire ten new personnel for the plan, one new lifeguard lieutenant, three lifeguard sergeants, two senior beach lifeguards, and three fire captains.Theshifts would have one lifeguard ser geant, one senior beach lifeguard, and one fire captain throughout the week. Patrols will take place between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Services would include rescue swimmers, boat operations, fire suppression, emer gency medical services, hazmat response, and vessel/dock facility inspections. Under the model, the harbor manag er has also agreed to hire overnight pri vate security to patrol parking lots, bath rooms, and docks.
The current model is a police-based model implemented in 2009. It has eight officers and one sergeant providing 24hour coverage of the harbor. The harbor unit is tasked with landbased policing services, water rescues, and boating safety enforcement. In addi tion, lifeguards are provided for the har bor’s beaches and are part of the Fire De partment’s Lifeguard Division. The new proposed safety plan would rely on 24-hour coverage from a life guard-based unit with police available for emergency calls.
The motion also asked for open com munication and to keep the plan as a sort of living document up for change as the harbor adjusts to the new plan.
San Lazora Way Point My waypoint five miles off lighted Cabo San Lazaro headland is 22°44.45’N, 112°22.43’W. Watch out for 15-knot cruise ships also rounding this blind corner. Santa Maria Bay Although Santa Maria Bay is techni cally not inside Magdalena Bay proper, it indents hugely (three by six miles) into its barrier islands, Isla Magdalena. Santa Maria Bay’s easy entrance and huge northwest shelter make it one of the most popular anchorages on Baja’s rugged Pa cific coast. Although it’s mostly undevel oped, everyone stops here, from the Baja Ha Ha sailors and CUBAR power boats to long-range fishing boats and big-dollar tournament winners. No fuel, water or yacht services are available here, and shore break makes getting ashore difficult. But Bob Hoyt of Mag Bay Outfitters (VHF 16) runs re gional fishing charters. PLAN A Now, if we want to get directly to Mag Bay, we could (a.) lay a straight course (about 144° for 255 nautical miles) from the San Pablo waypoint to a safe point five nautical miles west of the lighted Cabo San Lazaro headland at the northwest corner of Mag Bay’s outer island. That course would put us over some of this re gion’s most excellent fishing at the Uncle S am Banks in about 130 miles. Maybe catch some lunch and dinner? Then 85 miles onward toward Cabo San Lazaro.

The fishing village of Bahia Asuncion offers a comfortable anchorage in prevailing northwest winds, plus diesel and gas from a Pemex station ashore.
Last time, we cruised down the Baja coast from Ensenada to Turtle Bay, not ing a few landmarks, navigational haz ards to avoid and six anchorages to keep in mind for different wind and sea conditions.Thistime we’ll depart Turtle Bay and continue down Baja to Magdalena Bay. Depart Turtle Bay This next stretch is wide open to wind and seas coming up from the south, so if we have a favorable weather window for voyaging south, we depart Turtle Bay by keeping Roca Entrada to port and head ing southwest until we’re about five nau tical miles offshore. There we turn south east and continue coasting five miles offshore for about 30 miles. San Pablo Waypoint At 30 miles southeast of Turtle Bay, we come five miles abeam of Punta San Pablo, a landmark striated mountain. (See photo) My position about five nauti cal miles southwest off Punta San Pablo is 27°09.60’N, 114°32.85’W.
In November, thousands of migrating gray whales arrive at Laguna San Igna cio Whale Park to mate and give birth in the lagoon’s warm, shallow waters until March. The whale park is 13 miles east. Private boats cannot enter the whale park, so anchor off Abreojos and book half-day seats aboard one of the parkguide pangas. Some whale mothers train their babies to come alongside the pangas for a pat on the head from the blissed-out humans. (See photo) From Abreojos, we can jump offshore and head 130 miles south-southeast.

Punta Abreojos About 45 nautical miles southeast from Asuncion we have bypassed Hipoli to and La Bocana to anchor off the east side of low, broad Punta Abreojos. We ap proach the east side anchorages from five miles out, because Abreojos translates as a warning, “Open the Eyes,” referring to eight hazards within the 10-fathom curve or five miles around this low broad point.
PLAN B Or we could (b.) stay coastal a while longer and check out a couple places of interest. Both Bahia Asuncion and Bahia Abreojos provide anchoring shelter from this region’s prevailing northwest winds and so much more. Bahai Asuncion Isla Asuncion (pronounced “ah soon see OHN ”) lies 14 miles southeast of San Pablo and this narrow island pokes two miles south from low, sandy Punta Asun cion. A small overnight anchorage with shelter from moderate northwest winds is found along the east side of Isla Asuncion. But for a more commodious stopover, we would anchor almost anywhere off the prosperous little fishing village of Bahia Asuncion, which spreads a mile along the east side of Punta Asuncion. Remnants of the old cannery pier are still visible in the middle of town, and since a normally good dinghy landing beach spot is about 300 yards north of that pier, we could anchor off there. Most pangas anchor off their beach launch ramps at the south end of the village. A paved road now brings Pemex diesel and gasoline. To get panga to deliver fuel, ice, water, or food to your boat at anchor, hail Campo Sirena on VHF 16. Naturalist guide Sheri Bondi and her daughter Sire na and their families run this service for v isiting boaters, as well as a restaurant and beach campground. Asuncion often has better cell coverage than Turtle Bay.

Puerto San Carlos Is located 21 miles up from Punta Entrada, including a well-marked N-shaped channel that starts near Man of War Cove. It’s a commercial port that serves shrimpers and container ships, so the port captain wants yachts to anchor north of the piers and come ashore to do the complete port clearance cha-cha. Ashore we find three cute mom-n-pop hotels with restaurants that cater to trailered fishing boaters, also a Pemex station, several grocery stores and a bus station selling tickets to La Paz and Loreto. Big yachts in a pinch have rendered themselves well and taken high-speed diesel here, but it’s not recommended for smaller boats.Next time we’ll find out way down to Los Cabos and have a look around.
Belcher’s Point (1.) Lies three miles inside. We can anchor on either side of this triangular spit of land covered by stinky fish-drying racks and the remnants of a phosphorous loading dock. However, this point was originally used as a whaling station. Man of War Cove And its tiny town Puerto Magdalena are 11 miles up from Punta Entrada. Watch out for floating fish hatchery pens. The anchorage has room for 50 boats to swing, protected in all but strong east wind.Ashore are two part-time restaurants (Miramar & La Palapa) and a mini mart, remarkable considering this is an island and everything must be brought over by panga from Puerto San Carlos. The port captain’s annex oversees things, so after you get settled, you might call them on VHF 16 to notify them you cleared into Mexico in Ensenada and are now here for a few days. The Mexican Navy has a base here and down in the south end of Mag Bay. School children here really appreciate little gifts of notebooks, pens, crayons, and back packs.
Finally! The actual trancemile-widethree-en-toMagBay lies 22 miles southeast of the San Lazaro waypoint. We’ll take bold Punta Entrada to port, leaving Punta Redonda to starboard on the other barrier island called Isa Santa Margarita. The north half of Mag Bay holds most interest for ocean-going boaters, providing three choices for overnight anchorage.

“Praying, and peddling, and cursing, that kept me going,” said Thomas. He was pushed a little off course and ended up between Huntington Beach and Newport before backtracking and correcting his course to get to the Orange County Sherriff Harbor Patrol Station in Newport Beach. Still, he reached his goal in the end, 11 years after his first journey and 31 years after his trauma.
Thomas crossed from Catalina to Newport in approximately 11 hours, traversing about 30 miles.
Matters, Praying, Pedaling, and Cursing
Matthew Thomas broke records in 2011 when he paddled his hydrobike from Catalina to Long Beach in just over seven hours. He took to the Pacific again, this time making his way to Newport Beach.
O ver the past 31 years, Thomas’s jour ney has led him to share his experience w ith others and even start a non-profit called Positive Matters, to advocate and support head trauma and coma patients through education and resources. I n his YouTube video series, Co ma-dentials, Thomas shares his experi ence of going to hospitals to work with and support other patients who are work ing on recovering their own motor skills. Thomas is known for having a deep connection with the patients he volun teers with, singing with them, participat ing in their physical therapy, and stand ing by them to encourage them to grasp life again with an enthusiastic “whoo hoo hoo.”You can learn more about Thom as’s journey through “Straight Out of a C oma,” a documentary “coming at you from the frontal lobe down to the vocal chords,” detailing his journey. By: JORDAN B. DARLING NEWPORT BEACH — On Aug. 20, Matthew Thomas, a coma survivor, took to the ocean once again to re-do his record-breaking 2011 journey. In 2011 Thomas crossed from Cata lina to Long Beach in seven hours and 15 minutes on a hydrobike, offering in spiration for others suffering from head t rauma. For take two, Thomas took on the Catalina crossing again but aimed his bike further south to Newport Beach. In about 11 hours, in conditions of three-to-four-foot swells and winds at 10 knots, Thomas once again pushed him self and his hyrdobike to his limits to sup port coma patients, head trauma victims, and others suffering from brain trauma. “My main goal is to represent coma people, head trauma victims, stroke vic tims…,” said Thomas. “It is just that you c an do anything when you are doubted; I am doing things. I did mine through prayers and pedaling and, of course, a lit tle cussing out in the middle of the ocean no one heard except my chase boat.” In 1991 Thomas was a promising ath lete fresh out of high school. He had been offered a football scholarship to Brigham Young University and was living a normal and independent lifestyle. June of that year, Thomas got in the passenger seat of an intoxicated friend’s Volkswagen Beetle. Unfortunately, he was involved in a serious accident when they went over a 30-foot bridge leaving his friend with a broken leg and Thomas in critical condition after being thrown through the car’s windshield and land ing on rocks. Doctors gave him a five percent chance of life and told his family that even if he did wake up from his coma and survive, they shouldn’t expect much. Thomas woke up in Northridge Hos pital Medical Center after three months a nd underwent an intensive 12-month therapy program to relearn how to walk, talk, read, and write. He and his mom moved to Newport Beach, where he underwent another two years of therapy at Coastline Communi ty College’s Acquired Brain Injury Center, which specializes in retraining for adults with brain trauma. T homas surprised doctors with his fairly quick recovery. In 1993, just two years after his accident, Thomas’s neigh bor Jim Raué bought two hydrobikes a nd put Thomas in charge of cleaning the bikes, which seemed to add to Thom as’s recovery efforts. His cleaning eventually led to riding the bikes. Although Thomas remains par tially paralyzed on his left side, he calls it being “super-duper happily partially par alyzed.” The partial paralysis can make some motor skills difficult, including bal ance, but the hydrobike is built on a stur dy platform which gives Thomas freedom on the water without worrying about his balance.Onhis second go-round, Thomas de scribes not being able to see the shore for five or six hours and then only catching a glimpse of his destination. He relied on straight determination, the grace of God, which he attributes to his journey through recovery and his ef forts to help others, and a good helping of curse words to get himself across the 30-mile stretch.
A group of supporters gathered on the docks to cheer Thomas on.
By: KATHERINE M. CLEMENTS N EWPORT BEACH — War Heroes on the Water is returning Sept. 23-27 for its fifth annual, three-day, on the water experience that gives combat-wounded veterans the unique venture of deep-sea fishing on a hosted vessel. LoanDepot CEO and executive chairman Anthony Hsieh founded WHOW in 2018. This year, a fleet of 50 of the region’s local sportfishing boats will carry 125 veterans in teams of 2-4 per vessel on the adventure of a lifetime to partake in sportfishing along the waters of the Southern California coast. Some vessels are returning sponsors, and others are embarking on their first WHOW experi ence. If they’re successful, they will have t heir catch weighed and photographed on Avalon’s Green Pier at the end of the event.“Usually [there is] one captain per ves sel, but there are also situations where both the yacht owner and captain work together, or the owner is the captain,” ex plained LoanDepot Public Relations Of ficer Jonathan Fine in an email from Aug. 23. Following the parade, the crews will head to sea to experience two full days of deep-sea fishing from Sept 24-26. Clos ing ceremonies will be at 4 p.m. on Sept. 26, followed by tournament weigh-ins on Avalon’s iconic Green Pier.
“ There are multiple prizes awarded, including the angler scoring the most points in each species (there are 10 spe cies); angler with the highest overall qual ifier points; angler with the highest over all weight points; highest overall team; highest overall angler; and there are also first/second/third for each species,” said Fine. The boats will only fish in local SoCal waters.Hsieh conceptualized WHOW in 2018 after he returned from a fishing trip he held for a group of veterans. Before re turning to port, he had already created a vision for the tournament. Hsieh de signed the tournament to show appreci ation for America’s heroes— servicemen a nd women. WHOW is not a tourna ment created to break records; instead, it was created to change the lives of com bat-wounded veterans and bring enjoy ment to their lives after touring while r aising funds for or ganizations to sup port veterans. HONG KONG Amateur swimmer Li Ling Yung-Hryniewiecki is going to attempt to swim the English Channel, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, infested with jellyfish and chilling tem peratures ranging from 45 to 61 degrees. This attempt will be the first to be done by a Singaporean woman and will chal lenge her with 34-kilometers of swim ming, a little more than 21 miles.
“I am feeling quite excited now that the date is coming, and cautiously optimistic!” said Yung-Hryniewiecki. “I have had many people support the fundraising cause for Splash, and I will try my best to have a successful Yung-Hryniewieckicrossing!”is a volunteer coach and advocate for the foundation’s, “everyone can swim” mantra and her fundraising goal will support coaching for 100 domestic workers from Singa pore’s under-resourced communities as Splash extends its reach outside of Hong Kong.“Through my involvement with Splash, I’ve seen first-hand the journey from complete beginner to confident swimmer,” said Yung-Hryniewiecki in a press release from Aug. 22. “Swimming truly is available to everyone. I hope to show that stepping outside your comfort zone, and even taking part in endurance events, is not reserved for the elite.” The English Channel connects En gland to France, and swimming it is a de manding challenge that is considered the u ltimate long-distance challenge. There have been more successful attempts at climbing Mount Everest than those who have attempted to swim the Channel; the first successful passage was in 1875. The average solo crossing time takes about 13 and a half hours. In 1926, Gertrude Ederle made his tory by becoming the first woman ever t o successfully swim the English Chan nel. Ederle was 20 years old when she accomplished the challenge and had beat the fastest man’s existing record by near ly two hours. Today’s world record was set in 2012 by Trent Grimsey at 6 hours and 55 minutes.Yung-Hryniewiecki manages a fulltime job in Hong Kong’s financial sec tor and a training schedule that totals 28 miles per week at its peak to help her achieve the difficult task of acclimating to the cold water. The Channel is notorious for cold water conditions which will push a swimmer’s body to the limits. To have an attempt be officially recog nized by the CSA, athletes gear is limited to a swimming cap, goggles, a nose clip, earplugs, and a Yung-Hryniewieckiswimsuit.has been prepar ing by spending her last few winters train ing in Hong Kong’s chilly offshore waters while focusing on adding vital body fat that is necessary for maintaining an opti mal core temperature to avoid hypother mia. W hen taking the fluctuation of the weather conditions into account, regis tered swimmers are allotted a date window by the Channel Swimming Association, in which the swimmer must be available to start their swim when the weather is deemed suitable. Yung-Hryniewiecki’s window is between Aug. 31- Sept. 9. She will be followed closely by a CSA-regis tered pilot boat which will provide safe ty checks, nutrition, and encouragement when needed. However, physical contact between the swimmer and the boat is not permitted during the swim. Likewise, the pilot will help Yung-Hryniewiecki safely navigate one of the world’s busiest ship ping lanes, with around 600 tankers and 200 ferries passing through daily. “I will have a support boat alongside me the whole way,” said Yung-Hryniew iecki in an email from Aug. 23. “My sup port crew on the boat will be able to throw me a carbohydrate drink from the boat every half an hour, which they will pull back with a rope. The Spirit of Dana Point Returns to Ocean Institute
By: KATHERINE M. CLEMENTS DANA POINT— On Aug. 22, the Ocean Institute in Dana Point announced the return of the tall ship, The Spirit of Dana Point. On Aug. 28, the Institute hosted a free event that presented her restoration journey and a coin ceremony to welcome her home. There was also a Q&A segment for those who had questions regarding the “Aprocess.coin ceremony typically occurs with new construction, but we wanted to celebrate her restoration and welcome her home,” said Ocean Institute Communications Specialist Miranda Lentz. “A coin ceremony generally occurs at the keel laying, in the early stages of a ship’s construction. In it, the shipbuilders place one or two coins under the keel block of the new ship to bless the ship and as a symbol of good fortune.” Captain John Kraus was present to speak about tools used, artifacts collected throughout the process, and the restoration project in its entirety. Kraus has a history with the ship and has spent many hours on other local tall ships and was approached to spearhead the restoration efforts because of his experience. While in San Diego (where the tall ship was restored), Kraus and crew replaced her rigging and masts on-campus. New masts were found in the Pacific Northwest and were shipped to Ocean Institute in March to be shaped and outfitted with The Spirit’s rigging. Kraus and workers from the shipyard rebuilt and restored deadeyes, the masts were replaced entirely, and shaped onsite, new fife rails were built, and the rigging was replaced and“Herrestored.keelwas laid in 1970, making her roughly 52 years old,” said Lentz. “These repairs were necessary because her decking needed work. In addition, her maintenance schedule dictated these treatments for routine maintenance.”

“The popularity of the Fishbrain app allowed us to see large scale movement patterns of anglers,” said Jessica Weir, an author on the paper from Ball Univer sity. “This was critical to the success of the study. We knew it was an interesting avenue of research because how anglers move among lakes is critical to under standing how invasive species are spread. G ood movement data are hard to come by and spatially limited, so there was a large data gap in most places that we could fill with Fishbrain data. Our group had suc cess in describing connections between lakes at a smaller scale using a now de funct fishing app and we did a pilot study in Minnesota using Fishbrain data that was then scaled up to the entire U.S.”
“Our research derived this network from pathways that were heavily and frequent ly travelled by anglers.” This differs from the natural network of rivers and streams the species can take. Natural waterways are connected and flow downstream, while the superhigh way allows the species to be transported f rom one place to another even though the waterways are not connected.

The data from the study showed that the anglers created 650,764 connections between lakes that were not already con nected by a river or stream, the stron gest connections were based in the east ern United States, and most connections were made in a seven-day period. While the study was able to track the “superhighway,” it was a staunch remind er of the angler’s role regarding invasive species.“Invasive species have both ecolog ic and economic impacts,” said Weir. “Aquatic invasive species threaten na tive species and disturb the aquatic food chain which can in-turn lower the quality of the fishery. Invasive species have high economic costs as well. Aquatic invasive species can clog intake pipes for indus trial facilities, harm human health, and cost an estimated US$26 billion global ly each year.”
T he data they gathered identified high-density fishing areas where anglers gather and the links that are created be tween waterways through fishing traffic. It also highlighted the function of apps like Fishbrain and the actions recreation al anglers can take to prevent the spread of invasive species.

There are a couple of tips that anglers should keep in mind as they move around to different fishing spots. Anglers play an important role in preventing the spread of invasive species.
“The angler network was far more ex tensive than the natural network,” said Weir. “There was more connectivity over all, redundant connections, and new con nections that do not exist via rivers and s treams. The flow of connections from lake to lake often occurred in both direc tions due to how anglers moved across t he landscape, compared to the typical one-way (downstream) flow of rivers and streams.”Overa four-year period, researchers used data from the app, which provides data to anglers and lets them store their information, like a fishing log and favor ite fishing spots, to track fishing patterns across the “FishbrainU.S.is the most popular app for people who like to fish in the world,” said Nate Roman, partnerships manager at Fishbrain. “As such, Fishbrain is able to provide comprehensive insight into fish ing trends and pat terns based on data f rom millions of an glers across different j urisdictions, mak ing it easier to spot ho w the movement of invasive species maps onto the move ments of anglers.”

NEWPORT BEACH — The 2022 Catalina Crossing U.S. Outrigger Championships, the pinnacle race of the Southern California Outrigger Association, will take place Sept. 10-11. The Catalina Crossing is an annual race that will be going into its 63rd year. The Nov. 10 races will begin outside the jetty in Newport Beach; all canoes are stationed at the Back Bay Dunes and will leave from there. Canoes are asked to be off the beach by 7:30 a.m. to be as close to an 8 a.m. start time as pos sible. The Nov. 11 race will depart from L overs Cove in Avalon and will depart at 10:30 a.m. All crews will have a sat ellite tracker on them, so their location is always known. Multiple divisions will race alongside each other and the satellite tracker will determine the winner of each division in the cumulative race. The aver age race time for the women and co-ed di vision is four to six hours, and the average for the men’s division is approximately three-and-a-half hours to six hours, de pending on the conditions and fitness of the crews racing. A s in any race, the fastest time wins, but because the events will have multiple divisions, there will be winners in each division, all based on when they finish the race.

According to Californiadrought.org, droughts are a recurring feature of California’s climate and are becoming increasingly severe due to climate change.

Newsom Declares Long-Term Plan to
Boost California Water Supply
- Free up 500,000 acre-feet of water through more efficient water use and conservation, helping make up for water lost due to climate change - Make new water available for use by capturing stormwater and desalinating ocean water and salty water in ground water basins, diversifying supplies, and m aking the most of high flows during stormHowever, events.the plan has little detail and outlying deadlines and does not incorpo rate a water conservation mandate.

Newsom recently moved to stream line permitting for renewable energy projects, a testy effort that lawmakers called “rushed” and “lousy,” according to CalMatters.Thereport also acknowledged the state’s disputed tunnel proposal to replumb the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and pump more water south. Antioch Mayor, Lamar Thorpe, denounced t he tunnel plan through remarks with Newsom during the press conference, al though he expressed support for the re mainder of the administration’s water strategy. When Newsom was asked during the briefing about ideas such as container ships transporting water from Canada and the Pacific Northwest, he respond ed, “I assure you, we have some more novel ones…that are more interesting. But that’s for later.”
A t the event, Newsom said that his voluntary approach came from com prehensively examining lessons learned f rom the last drought.
The new report highlights that the state’s administration operates under a complex and ancient water rights system, rooted since the Gold Rush, and requires changes.Inthe 19-page document, the New som administration outlined efforts to bolster recycled water supplies and stor age capacity in reservoirs and groundwa ter. Measures included are: Create storage space for up to 4 mil lion acre-feet of water, allowing us to cap italize on big storms when they do occur and store water for dry periods. - Recycle and reuse at least 800,000 acre-feet of water per year by 2030, en abling better and safer use of wastewater currently discharged to the ocean.
Peter Gleick, co-founder and senior fellow at The Pacific Institute, a global water think-tank, applauded the an nouncement but noted its limitations.

In addition, it also does not include measures to substantially govern water usage by agriculture, which uses almost four times more water in California than people in urban areas use, according to calmatters.org.Despitethe ongoing drought that ab
On Aug. 11 Governor Gavin Newsom revealed a broad strategy for strengthening California’s water supply in his 19-page document. The plan out lines goals to recycle more water, expand reservoir storage and collect more data about the amount of water being used by farmers.Newsom said that enforcing new strategies is critical because California’s water supply will shrink by 10 percent by 2040 as climate change brings warmer, drier consequences to California. Included in the plan are possible grants to fallow fields and programs to com pose timely data regarding surface water g rower’s use. The project also glides over the possibility of regulations to down size growers’ pumping from rivers and streams beyond drought emergencies.
sorbs California, Newsom’s strategies w ill not increase the amount of water available to urban areas and farms in the near future. For example, the plan’s procedures set a 2030 goal for recycling 800,000 acre-feet of water, an eight per cent increase from the amount recycled i n 2020, and a 2040 target that builds to 1.8 million acre-feet of recycled water.
“Many of the things in this strategy are important, many of these things need to be done. All of them need to be done faster. And there’s some gaps,” Gleick said in an interview with CalMatters. “There’s very little in here for agriculture … a hard challenge, because there are fewer knobs and levers that the state can turn and twistForhere.”urban users, Newsom has not fol lowed the efforts of former Gov. Jerry Brown, who set a statewide conservation mandate. Instead, Newsom has since pre ferred to leave the details to local water agencies in what he called a “mandate of local mandates.”
Governor Gavin Newsom unveiled “California’s Water Supply Strategy: Adapting to a Hotter, Drier Future” that addresses funding options to proneCalifornia’shelpdrought-climate.
“One of the principal recommenda tions in that report was do not impose one-size-fits-all,” Newsom said. Instead, he said he has met with water agency leaders twice to tell them, “You’ve got to step up your conservation efforts, or we will impose these statewide mandates.”
According to Senior Advisor for Com munications for the Office of the Gover nor, Anthony York, in an interview with CalMatters, the drought “is not a shortterm situation. It’s the new reality. And we cannot conserve our way out of this given how our climate has changed.”
California found another drought in 2021, with water conditions at the end of the wet season far below average for the second year. Los Angeles had 40 percent of average precipitation, and San Diego only had 30 percent.
Though water use has not substantial ly declined under his voluntary measures, u rban usage dropped by about 7.6 per cent in June in comparison to two years ago. Still, only 2.7 percent has fallen since last July compared to the same stretch in 2020.Thepress conference follows closely after a poll indicated that more than twothirds of Californian adults canvassed commented that state and local govern ments must do more to fight the present drought.Toread Newsom’s press release, visit nia/.ter-strategy-for-a-hotter-drier-califorgovernor-newsom-announces-wahttps://www.gov.ca.gov/2022/08/11/
A fundamental theme for the ap proach is expediting permitting for var ious projects, including groundwater re charge (or deep drainage where water moves downward from surface water to groundwater) and desalination. Newsom lamented what he referred to as the “reg ulatory thickets” slowing these efforts and agreed to work with the Legislature in its last weeks of session to “help us fast track these projects.”

The event has been canceled for the past two years, first due to covid restrictions and then due to funding issues. “When we realized we could help bring back our favorite event of the year and go ahead and put our name on it, we jumped at the opportunity,” said Basso. “It’s been two years too long, and we are twice as excited to get back to the island for the 2022 Sun Country Micro Brew Festival at Two Harbors Catalina.” event will be held at Two HarHouse CA 90704. about the

Seal Beach also caught the attention of early Hollywood, with silent film stars like Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton visiting the amusement park and studios looking to film “beach comedies” in and around the pier. Notably, Cecil B. DeMille’s 1923 version of “The Ten Commandments” used the beach as a set for the parting of the Red Sea, according to The Orange County Tribune. On the flip side, gambling, prostitution, and rum-running also made their way into the town. Seal Beach was incorporated in 1915, and by 1916, the city’s seaside amusement park, the Joy Zone, opened its doors, featuring one of the longest wooden piers on the Pacific Coast and the Derby Roller Coaster. The amusement park boasted carnival games, fair food, a bathhouse, a dance hall, and the Jewel City Café. City founder Philip A. Stanton hoped to make the Joy Zone the “Coney Island of the Pacific.” At its peak, there were as many as 20,000 visitors each week, according to the OC History Roundup.
The free event welcomes guests of all ages to tour the port to enjoy live music, tasty treats, and a marketplace to shop for handcrafted and boutique items. In addition, there will be a kid’s zone for the little ones to go bananas.

BLUE POINT, NY— After six months, two countries, and 44 individual races at four major events, the Club 420 Association’s Triple Crown Award came down to the last races of the final regatta for the 2022 season, Aug. 5-7. Two local teams placed in the tournament, Peter Busch and Cam Spriggs from San Diego taking home second and Read Decker and Sophia Mulvania from Newport Beach taking home third. The Triple Crown was established in 2013 to honor youth sailors (skipper and crew) for achievement in winning on ag gregated points in a series of designat ed championship races in the Club 420 sailboat throughout a single year. Events that count toward this point series in clude the Club 420 US Nationals, Club 420 Canadian Nationals, Club 420 North Americans, the Buzzards Bay Regatta, and other significant events designated by the class. This is the ninth season of the series championship, which determines the top teams and the top individual athletes, both skippers, and crew, who earn the most points throughout the series of four high-level competitions:
Second Place: Peter Busch and Cam Spriggs (San Diego, CA) won the tie breaker with 112 points. Third Place: Read Decker and Sophia Mulvania (Newport Beach, CA) with 112 points.“We are excited to have had so many excellent youth sailors participate,” said Association Executive Director Dillon Paiva. “The quality of the competition is quite high, and I think this has made this season-long competition quite exciting. The point spread throughout the season was very close, and the top 3 wasn’t de termined until the final regatta.”
Keep a pair of heat-resistant gloves handy because flares can get relative ly warm. Hold a handheld or parachute flare in your non-dominant hand. Hold a flare gun in your dominant hand. Hold your arm straight out at about a 45 to 60-degree angle. With handheld marine flares, cock your wrist to slant it away from you. These flares drip slag, and you want hot slag to leak in the water, not onto your forearm, wrist, or hand. Look Away Before You Fire Shift your eyes so that you look to one side away from the flare, flare gun, or parachute when you ignite it. This gives additional protection to your eyes. Next, drop the expended flare body or shell cas ing into the water or a bucket filled with water. One last Tip: While flares are classified as flamma ble, they are generally safe and stable if stored correctly. There is no threat of mass explosion, nor is there any threat of an in dividual flare exploding. They should be stored in a cool, dry place away from ex cessive heat above 167 degrees and away f rom sparks or flames. The standard rec ommended storage temperatures are 40 t o 90 degrees. Do not expose flares to water for periods longer than 10 minutes. Marine flares expire 42 months after the manufacture date per the Coast Guard requirements, so check the expiration dates on your flares and signals. If they have expired or will expire during the boating season, it is required by law that they are replaced.
It’s also a good idea to conserve your aerial signals until you are fairly certain you have been spotted by help as an ef fort not to waste “one-time” signals. O ne-time signals are just that, useable only once, unlike flare guns or electronic flares. Once you’ve sighted help, the U.S. Coast Guard recommends you fire two aerial flares, one immediately after the other, so that rescuers can confirm the sighting and the direction of the signal. If using a parachute flare, one is fine as it has an adequate burn time to confirm sighting and position. Once your aerial flare has been witnessed, you must make sure your rescu er can pinpoint your location by using ha ndheld flares. The surface-to-surface sighting range on the water is approxi mately three to five miles, depending on boat elevation. If a rescuer is five miles away and running at 20 miles per hour, it will take 15 minutes to reach you. There fore, you should have a minimum of 12 m inutes of signal burn time for a solid homing signal. Handheld flares last ap proximately three minutes, so it is recom mended you have six to be on the safe side a s not all boats travel that fast.

Five Steps to Prepare the Launch of a Marine Flare: Follow the Instructions Before you fire or launch a flare, read the instructions and look at the illustra tions. Then, make sure you understand how to open the marine flare. Never as sume that you take off a cap and ignite it.
Wear Eye Protection It is best if you protect your eyes at all costs. Hot flare slag could blow back to ward you if the wind changes direction. Handheld flares drip melted elements as they burn, called slag. Everyday eyewear or sunglasses offer some protection, but heat-resistant goggles are more adequate in protecting. Face Downwind Move to the boat’s edge, put your back to the wind, brace yourself as the ves sel pitches and rolls, and always dou ble-check that you are facing downwind.

“There will be six awards given out during the tournament,” said Vitek. “First, second, and third place in the “Team Category,” which will be based on the total number of points accumulated by each team (includes released fish and weighed fish). There is also the “Biggest Fish” category, which will have first, second, and third place trophies awarded to the individual anglers that caught the top three biggest fish. The awards will consist of custom swordfish trophies from renowned wildlife sculptor John Kobald, as well as other items such as YETI coolers, gaffs, framed artwork, and a swordfish mount for the biggest fish caught.”
“We chose this method so that it includes all of Southern California, and the areas where swordfish are targeted,” said Vitek. “If we did just one location (Newport, for example), we would not get participation from the San Diego anglers, and same for those anglers up north. Definitely not a “conventional” approach to a fishing tournament, but we have seen this model in other locations around the world, and it worked well for us last year.”
The event has 41 sponsors including YETI, The Catalina Island Company, and H&M Landing. Scoring for the 2022 IGFA SoCal Swordfish Open is provided by CatchStat. Starting in 2005, CatchStat has provided live scoring to over 200 tournaments worldwide.

FEATURED CATCH Caught Red Brotula? Davey’s Locker challenged anglers on Facebook to identify a mystery fish. Best guesses say the fish is a red brotula. Generally found in Mexican waters of the Pacific Ocean, the red brotula is a rare find in Southern California. The fish usually hangs out in rocky reefs in depths up to 840 feet and will hide in caves during the day to emerge at night and prey on crustaceans, small clams, and other invertebrates. According to the Fish Base website, the fish is considered sweet and fine-textured though it is rarely available and mainly fished by subsistence fishermen. The fish is considered elusive, and little is known about their habits.

• Private boater Tom Golding of Last Buck reported fishing a recent trip to the Snail Bank where they caught two bluefin out of three hookups. One of the boated bluefin was a 100-plus pound fish that bit on a Nomad Madmac jig and the second boated fish was a 60-pound fish that bit on a flylined sardine. What was most exciting was that the big bluefin caught on the Nomad Madmac jig bit while the boat was stopped, and they were winding the jig to the boat. It was quite the thrill to have the bite happen right next to the nonmoving boat. Golding reported finding the bluefin biting in water temperature ranging from 69.19 degrees to 69.44 degrees.
Private boater Glen Jaffe of Relentless fished about five miles north of the 178 Spot and reported catching eight dorado and two yellowfin tuna. He said that about half of the kelp paddies they found were holding fish and that the rest were empty. All their dorado were caught around kelp paddies and their

• The Catalina region has also been producing good dorado fishing from kelp paddies and spots of breezing fish that are usually marked by working tern birds. Sardines and small mackerel have been working for the dorado which have also bit on small jigs and small trolling feathers. Productive dorado areas have been the Avalon Bank, the 277 Spot, the 152 Spot, the 14 Mile Bank, the 267 Spot, the oil rigs in the Catalina Channel, the 181 Spot, the 289 Spot, the 209 Spot and the 312 Spot. The area 4 to 8 miles to the northeast of the 209 Spot has been one of the best.

• What has been amazing is that there have been dorado, bluefin and yellowfin caught inside of the 9 Mile Bank fishing just four to six miles off Point Loma. There have been dorado and tuna close enough to Point Loma to where some of the half day trips out of San Diego Bay and Mission Bay have been able to get in on the fun offshore fishing. Kelp paddies have been producing most of the dorado and yellowtail with some spots of breezing dorado to be found with no kelp paddy involved. Most of the tuna have been caught from meter marks, sonar marks and spots of breezing, breaking or foaming fish.
• A recent private boater report was of catching six bluefin on trolled Nomad Madmac jigs while fishing at the Snail Bank off the back side of Catalina. They had one fish in excess of 200 pounds, three fish that were in the 150-pound class and two fish that were in the 30-to-50-pound range.

• In the San Diego region, there has been good mixed bag fishing on 30-to-100-pound bluefin tuna, 10-to-60pound yellowfin tuna, 5-to-18-pound dorado and 8-to-20-pound yellowtail. Productive areas local to San Diego include 4 to 15 miles west of La Jolla, the 178 Spot, the entirety of the 9 Mile Bank, the Coronado Canyon, the 182 Spot, the 224 Spot, the 302 Spot, the area 2 to 8 miles to the west and southwest of North Island, the 425 Bank, the 371 Bank and the Upper Hidden Bank.

By Bob Vanian of 976Bite.com SAN DIEGO — The Southern California saltwater angler currently has a lot of great options to choose from in planning a day of fishing be it offshore, at the Islands or along the coast. The offshore fishing continues to grab most of the headlines with bluefin and yellowfin tuna, dorado, yellowtail, and striped marlin biting.
• On the offshore fishing front bluefin tuna continue to lead the way with bluefin to 200-plus pounds being reported from the offshore waters off San Clemente and Catalina Islands. Productive bluefin bites have been found in the region of the 499 Spot, the Snail Bank, the Mackerel Bank, four to 10 miles to the northwest and the west-northwest of the West End of San Clemente Island, the area four to six miles to the southwest of the West End of San Clemente Island and four to eight miles outside of the Seal Cove region off the back side of San Clemente Island. Of all those locations, the area four to 10 miles to the northwest of the West End of San Clemente Island is currently the best.

• Private boater, Captain Bob Woodard Jr. of Dropback took the new owner of a recently purchased boat out for a shakedown fishing trip to the 9 Mile Bank and reported catching 5 bluefin tuna and 1 yellowfin tuna. Their tuna ranged in size from 30 to 80 pounds. Woodard said they had to drop down to using 25- and 30-pound test fluorocarbon leaders and size number tw0 hooks to draw strikes from the touchy tuna and said they had some lost hookups due to the small hooks pulling out and the light leaders getting bit off during the fight.
Fish Report 25
• Woodard fished another trip to the Coronado Canyon and 9 Mile Bank a couple of days later where they caught two bluefin tuna and five yellowfin tuna that went to 42 pounds. They caught their fish by working spots of working tern birds where there were not any breaking fish showing under the birds. He provided a valuable tip in saying that it helped to get bites if you watched the working birds to see which way they were moving before approaching to bait the spot. Once he determined which way the fish/birds were working he was able to maneuver the boat ahead of the fish and drop the baits in the water out ahead of the movement of the fish.
• The San Diego County kelp bed calico bass fishing has been good since a recent warming of the water along the coast. Productive calico bass bite kelp bed areas have been at the upper part of Point Loma, La Jolla, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Leucadia, Carlsbad, and the Barn.
• The best of the yellowtail fishing has been reported by boats fishing along the weather side of North Island, the Middle Grounds, and the lee side of South Island. Private boaters report success on yellowtail while using flylined sardines, slow trolled sardines, surface iron and yo-yo iron.
• The best spots for calico bass and barracuda have been at the kelp bed areas around South Island and at the Middle Grounds. Sardines and surface iron have been working well for calico bass and barracuda. Good choices for surface iron that would be good choices for calico bass, barracuda and yellowtail include Tady 45’s and Salas 7X lights in the blue and white color combination, mint, and sardine colors.
two yellowfin tuna were caught from baiting spots of breaking fish.
• Private boater Bob Wallace reported finding a wide-open dorado bite from a kelp paddy found outside of the middle part of the 9 Mile Bank at 14 miles 251 degrees from Point Loma. The bite as being limit fishing on mixed sized dorado. After leaving the kelp paddy Wallace went out to the Ridge looking for tuna and found some dorado trolling strikes while fishing to the west-northwest of the 181 Spot at 39 miles 283 degrees from Point Loma.

Woodard reported that in the morning that they caught their tuna from stopping on meter marks that were being found 50 to 150 feet below the surface and baiting the meter marks with flylined sardines and sinker rigged sardines. During the later part of the day there were some fish up working on the surface and they were getting bit by stopping alongside of spots of breaking fish and using the same flylined and sinker rigged sardines that worked during the morning when baiting the meter marks.
• The fishing at Los Coronado Islands has been very good for a mix of yellowtail, calico bass, bonito, barracuda, and an assortment of bottom fish species. Some of the better days of fishing have produced near limit-to-limit numbers of yellowtail. The most recent sportboat trip was on Grande out of H&M Landing that had 36 anglers on a full day trip catch 30 yellowtail, 11 rockfish, 8 calico bass and 8 barracuda.

• Striped marlin has also been providing offshore excitement with the area of the 286 Spot inside of the West End of Catalina Island being the best zone for a chance at a striped marlin. There have been feeders and tailers showing and some blind jig strikes are also being •reported.Therehas also been some recent marlin action outside of the V’s off the back side of Catalina as well as in the area 4 to 12 miles off the coast between Dana Point and Encinitas. An occasional marlin hookup is also reported out in the tuna fleet while fishing areas off San Diego such as the 9 Mile Bank and out to the west of North Island. Most of the hookups in the tuna fleet are coming from baiting kelp paddies with sardines on tackle that is intended for dorado. Most of the kelp paddy marlin hookups are eventually lost due to the light leaders on the dorado gear.
• The surface fishing along the San Diego County coast has been good for a mix of calico bass, sand bass, sculpin, bonito, reds, whitefish, and rockfish. There has also been a chance at getting lucky and catching a nice sized yellowtail at La Jolla, Point Loma, or Imperial Beach. New Seaforth out of Seaforth Sportfishing had a recent morning half day trip that found some biting yellowtail and had 33 anglers on a half day trip catch 2 yellowtail, 24 calico bass and 100 calico bass that were released.
