With 101 hp, the Can-Am® Maverick is the most powerful side-by-side vehicle ever built. But power means nothing without control. That’s why we paired its Rotax® 1000R engine with a new TTA (Torsional Trailing A-arms) rear suspension for an unbeatable combination of power and control. Add in advanced ergonomics for maximum comfort and optimal access to cockpit controls, and the Can-Am Maverick lets you easily handle a variety of terrain, from dunes to desert to trail. What does all of this mean? Nothing until you get behind the wheel and experience the new Can-Am Maverick for yourself.

evolution that split MX and TT competition into separate championships. This made the titles more accessible to riders who could only afford to specialize in one series. Manufacturers started producing race-ready ATVs again, and production classes opened up the sport to a new generation of talent.
tion ATVs quickly regained their status as the prime choice for competition. Factory rides came back, and ATV MX racing picked up where it had left off two decades before.

administers the production of the series to create uniformity and consistency across event production and sponsorship The AMA ATV Motocross Championship is unquestionably the premier amateur ATV motocross series in the world, offering classes for riders aged 4 and up and for machines from 50cc to 450cc. There’s a class for everyone, and riders can choose to chase a championship or just see what they have to bring when the “Big Show” comes to town. Just like a rugged ATV MX track after a long weekend, the path to this series’ greatness has been bumpy. But any racer will tell you that finishing a long, hard moto provides the best feeling in the world. For those dedicated to this sport and this series for over twenty years, making it to this grand new era of ATV racing is worthy of a big celebration. Congratulations!

HOW NATIONAL RACING WORKS
HILL
SERIES PROFILE National events are hosted at premier motocross racetracks (amateur and/or professional) across the country. The promoters of these facilities have experience in the design, preparation, and maintenance of ATV-friendly racetracks. Riders who are professionally licensed via AMA Pro Racing chase their championships at the same venue as most amateurs, ranging from ten to twelve rounds per year. A typical race weekend includes a Friday amateur practice day and racing on Saturday and Sunday. Generally, after a short all amateur classes are held on Sat-

Each class is scored separately using an electronic transponder system. Everyone is welcome to compete, and there is no pre-qualification process. We have a class for nearly every age, every machine, and every skill level. A typical national event will attract 500-800 racers, hailing from almost every state, as well as Canada and occasionally Europe, Australia, South

Despite near-perfect weather all morning during Friday’s practice sessions, a large storm system (that would eventually wipe out power to three states) would unexpectedly blow through the pits of Millfield, Ohio’s Sunday Creek track. Teams like Can-Am, Media Allstars, Yamaha, and many others lost their entire pit setups, making for a long, un-shaded

he 2012 series will once again kick off at Aonia Pass in Washington, Georgia. Aonia Pass offers ample level parking and houses a variety of tracks, including a supercross, mini, cross-country, and national MX (where the ATV race will be held). Aonia is no stranger to hosting big events, as they regularly host Loretta Lynn’s Qualifiers and GNCC events, along with state series races. Made up of red Georgia clay, the track is hard-packed and fast; woodchips and sawdust are routinely mixed into the surface to retain moisture, but with 500-plus ATVs racing on national weekend, it’s a safe bet you’ll encounter a hard, blue-grooved surface later in the day. The track itself can run in either direction and is routinely switched. While the track is built on small, rolling hills, the majority of the course is actually in a valley. The start is relatively flat, and obstacles vary from small timing doubles and tabletops to huge step-ups and step-downs. here aren’t many tracks prettier than Muddy Creek Raceway, which boasts a deep, dark brown loam surface and green grass that would rival most PGA courses. Built in a valley, the course takes full advantage of the elevation changes, offering a variety of obstacles that weave through the terrain including step-ups, tabletops, whoop sections, doubles and triples. The start is slightly uphill and will favor those with the most horsepower, while the rest of the course will favor those with the best rhythm and timing. Spectators can choose either side of the track, with bleachers scattered along the perimeter, as roughly 80-90 percent of the track can be seen from either side. Parking is based on tiers carved out of the side of the mountain trac ack. and surrounds most of the track.

BALLANCE MX April 27-28, 2013 | Oakland, KY

ere’s something in the water of Bowling Green, Kentucky, that should be bottled and marketed to racers. How else can you explain the disproportionate amount of fast ATV racers who have come out of the area? Jeremiah Jones, Josh Starrett, Bill and Brandon Ballance, Cody Grant, and the JPMX team are all from within throwing distance of the track, and all have made indelible marks on the sport. If not the water, then blame Ballance MX for the insane talent level in the area. The track, designed by multi-time GNCC Pro Class Champion Bill Ballance, utilizes every bit of natural elevation change and is among the most technical on the schedule. High-speed doubles, rhythm sections, off-camber turns, and option lanes make for great racing, as racers have multiple distinct options o in every section. The surface is clay-ish, and d certain sections get rough quickly. The parking area and d vendor’s row are spacious and flat, and at least 95 per ercent of the track can be seen percent from from m the the spectator spectator or a r a. re a area.

WILDCAT CREEK May 11-12, 2013 | Rossville, IN
W
ildcat Creek MX is located just 10 miles east of Lafayette, Indiana, on 100 acres of beautiful farmland. This Midwestern gem may be new to the series, but it’s anything but new to hosting quality MX events. Built in 2000 as a private track, it now hosts this event as well as an Area Qualifier for the Red Bull Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn Ranch. The spectator experience here should be great—the terrain is mostly flat (manmade jumps aside), and with the exception of one section that dives into the woods, the entire course is fairly visible. The track itself is built on fertile farmland, which means you can expect big ruts, as this earth is used to being plowed deep. The soil’s reddish tone is in stark contrast to the bright green grass that covers just about every other inch of the facility, and the layout is fast. You can expect to spend most of your time in the “wide open” section of your throttle, as the jumps are big and plentiful. There’s little room to rest here, and lap times should be in the same range as Ballance MX or Maple Shade.

estled in the middle of cornfields, Sunset Ridge almost seems like a mirage when you first lay eyes on it. The track is comprised of a sandy surface similar to RedBud and is among the widest on the schedule. With no natural elevation changes to speak of, the track looks almost supercrossy with its manmade jumps. The turns are wide bowls, and the overall layout is pretty busy and technical. The lack of elevation doesn’t necessarily mean low visibility, though, as you can see the majority of the race if you’re willing to move around a bit. Racers tend to like the track, and parking is set up in a neighboring cornfield. Chad Wienen and series sponsor SSI consider this their home track, as they’re both from the neighboring town of Galena.

BIRCH CREEK June 8-9, 2013 | Danville, VA
B
irch Creek Motorsports Park in southern Virginia returns to the ATV MX National series for 2013 after a three-year hiatus, having been a part of the series for well over a dozen years. This year’s return to Birch Creek is especially significant, as the series will honor the memory of longtime series referee and Danville native Robert “Smitty” Smith. Outside of the actual racing, an entire weekend’s worth of activities are planned to honor Smitty’s memory, and his family will be in attendance to help celebrate his legacy. As for the track, you’ll find red clay, the longest start straight on the schedule, and a monstrous uphill triple for starters. There’s traction for days and enough jump combinations to greatly reward creative racers. Birch Creek is technical—there’s no set way to get through the obstacles, so in many sections some racers may opt to double while others may triple, for instance. Spectators will have to be equally creative, as the track is carved out of a valley and mountainside, making it challenging to see all the action from one vantage point. The return to Birch Creek is a welcome occasion, and honoring the memory of someone who gave so much to this sport in his hometown will make this round all the more special.

ounded in 1983, Steel City Raceway is famed in motocross circles, having hosted a USGP in 1987 and a round of the AMA Pro Motocross tour for bikes for nearly twenty-five years. After decades at the High Point track in Pennsylvania, the ATV Stampede moved to Steel City in 2006, and now the four-wheeled set has learned just how tough and technical this place can be. Like the Budds Creek track, Steel City is set up in a valley, offering perfect sight lines for spectators. On the track, it’s a challenge; many of the corners are set up off-camber, and the jump combinations are challenging. While many tracks feature big air that requires nothing more technical than just pinning it and jumping, Steel City rewards riders who can nail expert timing over smaller doubles and triples and big tabletops. The Pennsylvania soil gets pretty soft, so expect big ruts and berms—the perfect stuff for creating new lines and making passes. Also, the uphill start is a true test of horsepower, so riders need to have their machines dialed in. The Steel City race is run with the help of the Coombs family, who also help put together the ATV Dirt Days race at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, and they’re known for their very professional approach to setting up an event.

ocated in the middle of upstate New York, Unadilla is the northernmost stop of the series. One of the longest-running MX tracks in the country, the place oozes MX history. The layout is traditional, in that it’s comprised more of natural-terrain obstacles than manmade ones, and it offers a fan-friendly spectating experience—you can see 80-90 percent of the track from just about anywhere. The track surface is notoriously rocky, dark dirt that tends to get rough, and the layout seems to be among the series’ fastest. The jumps that stand out most are the Gravity Cavity, the Skyshot, and the Plunge, as all three are easily hundred-footers. Chest protectors are a must at this one, as there are plenty of spots to pass, but you’ll be eating some roost to do it. There’s tons of flat parking for the event, and the close proximity to Canada brings out heaps of Canadian racers, as well as NEATV series racers looking to test themselves agains aiins n t the th best ATV ATV racers rac cerrs in the the e world. wor o ld. against

here’s probably not another track in the world that carries the mystique of RedBud. A favorite of fans and racers alike, this Hall of Fame-worthy facility pretty much defines MX. From the iconic LaRocco’s Leap, Monza Wall, and infamous downhill ski jump to the perfectly groomed and manicured grass, there’s something special about the Michigan facility. The track surface ranges from deep sand to extremely rocky dirt. In recent years, the track has undergone a facelift of sorts, with the addition of a treacherously long whoop section, monster step-up double, and giant tabletop—the technical aspect has doubled. The soil at RedBud really lends itself to braking bumps and ruts, and once you factor in the rocky ground, you’ll want to consider wearing a chest protector. The spectating experience is unique in that the track weaves through two separate valleys, split by a massive hill. It’s not uncommon to see the entire crowd run from one side of the hill to the other to see a good battle. oretta Lynn’s is the most well-known track in the series and typically boasts the most entries. The track is located at the home of country music legend Loretta Lynn and is only used three times a year—for the Amateur MX Nationals, Dirt Days, and the GNCC. The hard-packed dirt surface lends itself to braking bumps and ruts, and when you factor in the high number of entries, you can expect the roughest race of the year. The start is the longest and fastest in the series, and the Ten Commandments—a treacherous set of ten deep whoops—has become a thing of legend among racers. In recent years, renowned track builder Marc Peters has made improvements that have greatly improved the track’s overall flow. He was honored to be a part of the sport, and he took great pride in watching the kids grow from the 50cc classes all the way to the pros.
COURTESY SMITH FAMILY
community, Smitty was as big of a fan
Smitty was one of the most passionate people to set foot on a track, and those who knew him understood that he lived for those ten or so weekends a year that he would spend traveling to the ATVMX Nationals. Godspeed, Smitty. The ATV Racin’ Nation will surely miss you.
