WELCOME
TO THE 2013 MONSTER ENERGY CUP!
H
chael’s track design blends supercross and motocross unlike any other racetrack in the world. Last year’s signature obstacles—the split start, Joker Lane, and grandstands section—will remain, but Carmichael has amplified a few items. The 80-foot triple will grow to 100, and instead of one high-speed sweeper turn, there will be two. The first turn will now also direct riders onto the track from a 45-degree angle. To keep up with the demanding nature of this one-of-a-kind track, teams are given the opportunity to operate

But it’s that same lack of boundaries that leads to thinking outside the box and turning crazy ideas into reality, which is one of the things that makes the Monster Energy Cup so special.” One of those crazy ideas that quickly became a reality, as well as a cornerstone of the entire event, was the concept of the Monster Million. If a rider wins all three main events, he leaves the stadium $1 million richer. Sound too good to be true? It’s not. Ryan Villopoto did it in 2011 at the MEC’s inaugural running. “Our hope is that someone wins the Monster Million every year,” Swartzendruber says. “It makes the event that much more exciting, and when Ryan Villopoto did it in 2011, people realized it wasn’t just a ploy, that it truly is very possible

B GGER IS BETTER
The Ricky Carmichael-designed track promises huge thrills only a certain amount of rational thought behind either—there are far less risky ways to try to make a living. But racers and gamblers live for the risk, and there’s a certain thrill to both. And when the racing, the money, and Vegas all collide for one night, it makes for a big show unlike any other. How big? Just check out the Monster Energy Cup track, which is bigger, longer, and faster than any regular supercross track. And bigger is better!
TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE >>
It’s crazy enough to start the Monster Energy Cup outside, where riders can bang through gears and race into the building at super-high speed. It’s crazier still to split that starting gate in half, with eleven gates on either side, all converging in the center of Sam Boyd Stadium. And riders will have to switch sides in each main—if you start on the left in the first race, you’re on the right for the second, then back to the left for the final race. “I’m really pumped about this,” says Ricky Carmichael, the five-time supercross champion who designed the track. “I think you could pull a holeshot from any of the eleven gates on each side. It’s easier to maintain—normally you have twenty guys who want ten good gates. And for the fans, having the bikes funnel into the stadium in one lane will be cool.”
MORE FOR THE MONEY >> If a rider wants to earn the Monster Million, he’ll have to tame a track much bigger and faster than a typical supercross course. While the average Monster Energy Supercross track is built with 5,500 yards of dirt, the Monster Energy Cup track uses 8,500. With that extra dirt comes a technical out-and-back section that exits and reenters the stadium, as well as big jumps and the massive AMSAOIL Arch banked turn. Lap times are a tad longer than a typical supercross, too, which means more on-track time for the best in the business. Last year’s Monster Energy Cup track received positive feedback from the riders and teams, so the layout is similar, with one major tweak—it’s running backward!

testants submitted photos to MonsterEnergyCup.com, and the top twenty-five were opened up to fan voting to narrow down a top ten. Those ten contestants then submitted videos to make their case, and the field was again slimmed down to the final three contestants. And now, we introduce you to Miss Monster Energy Cup 2013, Brittany Pattakos!

DO YOU HAVE ANY BACKGROUND IN THE SPORT, OR WAS IT ALL NEW TO YOU? HAVE YOU BEEN TO RACES BEFORE? I’ve been involved with supercross for the past five years. I know a lot about it, and I used to ride when I was younger with my family. I’ve been to a few California and Arizona races. WHAT WAS IT LIKE HAVING TO PROGRESS FROM ROUND TO ROUND THROUGH THE CONTEST? I was definitely nervous about the whole process, because I was running against a lot of beautiful ladies, but it was well worth the wait! DID YOU MARKET YOURSELF AT ALL FOR THE CONTEST? Yes, I posted it on my Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. ARE YOU MORE NERVOUS OR EXCITED? A SOLD-OUT CROWD AND ALL EYES ON YOU IS A PRETTY INCREDIBLE ATMOSPHERE. I’m more excited than nervous! I love seeing the fans and being able to inspire others. It’s an amazing experience. WHAT PART OF THE EXPERIENCE WOULD YOU LOOK FORWARD TO MOST? Just meeting all the fans and seeing who wins this year’s Monster Energy Cup!

PARTY IN THE PITS
Get your money’s worth before you even go inside!
T
HE MONSTER ENERGY CUP ALWAYS provides a plethora of activities for fans to enjoy aside from the exciting racing. The Monster Energy Party in the Pits features the world’s best freestyle motocross riders, street bike stunts, car and trophy truck drifting, and much more. The pits open at 12:30 pm and
close at 6:00 pm; the Monster Main Stage Party Area and CUDBY
outside track-viewing areas will remain open all night long. Here’s a full rundown of the day’s activities.
FREESTYLE MOTOCROSS Headlining the freestyle motocross show are current and past Nuclear Cowboyz tour riders Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg and Nate Adams. With more than twenty X Games gold medals between them, they have been at the top of the freestyle game for more than a decade. Joining Stenberg and Adams will be rising freestyle star Taka Higashino of Osaka, Japan, the only Japanese competitor to medal in X Games Moto X. In August, at the final stop of the 2013 summer X Games in Los Angeles, Higashino pulled off the three-peat in Moto X Freestyle. Higashino had previously won gold in L.A. in 2012 and Foz do Iguacu, Brazil, in 2013. Although known best for insane stunts like backflipping over the London’s Tower Bridge and jumping onto Las Vegas’ Arc de Triomphe replica and back down, Robbie Maddison is an established freestyle competitor, and he joins the action here as well. Also featured will be top pro freestylers Lance Coury, Adam Jones, Todd Potter, Blake “Bilko” Williams, and André MILAN
Villa. The high-flying action takes off at 12:45 p.m., then again at 2:00, 3:15, and 4:30.

Protect your right to RACE. Y
our right to ride and race your motorcycle is under attack from those who would ban backyard tracks, shut down trails, restrict closed-course competition in your hometown, re-write your health insurance to exclude motorcycle-related injuries or allow E15 ethanol fuel that could compromise your bike’s performance. Nobody stands up to and defeats these threats like the American Motorcyclist Association, but we can’t do it without you!
Make the world a better place for racers. Join us today at AmericanMotorcyclist.com or (800) AMA-JOIN.
