After all, nobody spends as much time wearing a helmet as a pro rider – these guys live in their lids. And when it came to testing and refining the samples, Ryan was right there every step of the way. finer points of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross do require a little explaining. That’s why we’ve put together the answers to the sport’s most frequently asked questions. If you’ve got a question, its answer probably lies in the following pages.

HOW DOES A RACE GET STARTED? Before a race begins, racers position themselves behind a long metal starting gate secured to hinges in the ground. When the gate falls, it pivots back toward the riders and the race begins. The gate is designed in such a way that if a rider launches too early, his or her front wheel

Because of the danger involved and the skill required, not just anyone can enter a Lucas Oil Pro Motocross race. In order to keep the racing as safe as possible, racers must possess a valid pro license from the AMA. Eligibility for a pro license is determined by earned series points in approved amateur races. The riders you see today all logged thousands of hours on the bike and raced in hundreds of amateur races before turning pro.

is able to clear a jump at a much higher rate of speed with minimal time in the air. The sooner the bike is back on the ground, the sooner a rider can get back on the gas and start accelerating again.

WHOOPS

LINE

THE LINGO HOLESHOT When the gate drops, racers speed down a straight section of track toward the first turn. Getting the holeshot means coming out ahead in that first turn, thereby being the first person to lead the race.

ENDO A specific type of crash in which a bike tumbles forward, end over end.

KICKER JUMP A jump with an uneven surface that can kick riders higher in the air than a jump with a smooth takeoff. These carry a higher probability of inducing endos.

BERM An embankment in a turn that allows riders to maintain better corner speed.

22

While it is natural for large bumps to develop as a race progresses, whoops are manmade obstacles that are built into the track. They are usually, but not always, evenly spaced and of equal height.

The specific path a rider chooses through a section of the track. Sometimes a line is clearly faster than others, while some sections present multiple line choices, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

WHIP

OFF-CAMBER TURN

A maneuver in which a rider changes the direction or lean angle of the bike in midair. Riders perform whips to maintain better speed over an obstacle, to set up for the following corner, or simply for show.

A turn that is banked in the opposite direction—for example, a left-hand turn on a surface that’s slanted to the right. It’s easy to lose traction on these, so special care must be taken.

SCRUB

WHISKEY THROTTLE

An advanced form of a whip that is used primarily to stay as low as possible over a jump. When done properly, it is extremely impressive; the bike is often completely flat in the air and the rider

The accidental application of too much throttle. It’s most likely to happen when a rider is tired or caught off-guard by an unseen obstacle, and usually results in a bike that lurches forward unpredictably.

rising tide lifts all boats, and the rising prestige in Lucas Oil Pro Motocross has sent waves through the

motorcycle world. This has become the motocross championship for riders and teams worldwide to chase, and that has led to an all-time high level of competition for the 2013 season. Evidence of increased importance came last year, when the 450cc Class quickly boiled down to a two-man fight

between two former champions. Ryan Dungey, the 450cc title winner in 2010, was back and ready to reclaim his crown with help from a totally revamped Red Bull KTM effort. The Austrian CUDBY

last year with injuries. His premier-class foray begins this summer. There are plenty more names in a deep mix of contenders. Last year’s 450 runner-up, Mike Alessi, will be even stronger in his second year with MotoConcepts racing. Rockstar Energy Racing’s Davi Millsaps was a revelation in 450 supercross and will carry that momentum forward, as will another Suzuki rider, Dodge/Sycuan’s Broc Tickle. Last year’s champion is Blake Baggett, the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider from California. For the last two seasons, Baggett has racked up an impressive ten victories and a title through his incredible fitness and late-race speed. But a wrist injury derailed his indoor efforts in Monster Energy Supercross this year and severely restricted his preseason training and testing. The mighty Pro Circuit team is deep, though, with top talent like Darryn Durham, Martin Davalos, Son of mountain-bike legend John, Eli Tomac is one of the hottest prospects in the sport, and he battled Baggett to the final round for last year’s 250 title. A bigger rider, the 20-year-old was rumored to jump to the 450 Class this year, but the Colorado native will instead give the 250s another shot. His GEICO Honda team also packs Zach Osborne, a Virginia-based rider who recently spent several years racing in Europe. He brings those lessons home for a title run this year, alongside teammates Wil Hahn, Justin Bogle, and Zach Bell. Women’s Motocross returns in 2013 with an exciting new format CUDBY

fter a thrilling season in 2012, the fastest and most talented women in motocross will once again take to the dirt this sum-

mer when the WMX returns to the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, in the Women’s Pro Motocross Triple Crown. Featuring a new three-race format and taking place on the same demanding tracks as the renowned Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, the WMX Triple Crown will feature the same elements that helped shape last year’s outstanding season, while the shorter series will present racers with a new challenge demanding new strategies. The new WMX season makes its debut on the same day as the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, at the Red Bull

With the new Women’s Pro Motocross Triple Crown format, being out front and consistent will be the key to success, with little leeway for big mistakes. Look for seasoned veterans like Sarah Whitmore (12) and Jessica Patterson (2) to use their experience to their advantage, while riders like Mariana Balbi (11) and Kasie Creson (7) can be title contenders if they can be up front early and keep the momentum going through Round 3. here’s an element of motocross that will never change, and that’s the elements

themselves. Technology and the ever-quick evolution of racing will always create advances, but at the heart of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, it’s still man and machine going as fast as they can over natural terrain, same as it ever was. The twelve tracks that comprise the championship feature the perfect combination of old-school toughness and modern-day style. Many of the tracks reside deep in motocross lore as some of the longest-running facilities in the nation. Tracks like Hangtown, Unadilla,

When it comes to exhaust systems designed for competition, Yoshimura has always worked toward a single goal: helping you win races. A perfect example is the RS-4 mufer used by the RCH Racing Team.

Together with Honda Racing and Honda Japan, Yoshimura has developed the all new CRF450R specific RS-9 dual system. This system has a lower center of gravity to provide better feel and handling. Yoshimura’s Vertical Divider System divides exhaust gasses smoother than other brands which gives you more power/torque and better throttle response. The RS-9 dual system is quieter than single systems and meets 94db and AMA 2-meter max sound requirements.
