WELCOME W

elcome to Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship. After an all-time record 2012 season—831,600 fans made their way through the turnstiles at the seventeen races—defending Mon-

ster Energy Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto will be chasing a record of his own as he can become just one of four racers ever to

win three consecutive championships. The depth on this year’s starting gate is unprecedented, with ten different riders owning Main Event wins in the 450SX Class: Villopoto, Chad Reed, James Stewart, Ryan Dungey, Kevin Windham, Davi Millsaps, Trey Canard, Josh Hill, Andrew Short, and Josh Grant. Joining this elite class of riders is two-time 250SX Class Champion Justin Barcia, who won the Monster Energy Cup in October. The stars in the 250SX Class are equally impressive, with defending Western Regional 250SX Class Champion Eli Tomac leading the way. He will be challenged by Dean Wilson, Ken Roczen, Marvin Musquin, and Justin Bogle. The racing doesn’t end after you leave the stadium tonight. This year, fans will be treated to the largest television package in the sport’s history. A milestone in Monster Energy Supercross, SPEED will broadcast eleven live races, with a one-hour preview show before the gate drops on the season opener from Anaheim and a thirty-minute preview show from the season finale in Las Vegas. CBS Sports will carry nine hours of Monster Energy Supercross racing action, comprised of five 450SX Class races, a season preview show, a midseason show, a year-end show, and a special about two-time defending Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto. Stay up to speed on the 2013 racing season by logging on to SupercrossOnline.com, the official website of the Monster Energy Supercross Championship. THE MONSTER ENERGY SUPERCROSS

FAN GUIDE W

ith all the action taking place on the stadium floor tonight, it’s easy to get a little confused about everything that’s happening during Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM

World Championship. This primer will have you bench-racing with the best of them.

SUPERCROSS What exactly is Monster Energy Supercross? By taking the natural terrain courses of motocross indoors to the premier stadiums on the planet, Monster Energy Supercross the world, Monster Energy Supercross features the most challenging tracks ever designed. Some 7,000 cubic yards

was created. Showcasing the talents of the top riders in

of dirt comprise the Monster Energy Supercross tracks which can take as long as a week to build. Monster Energy Supercross is much more than a motorcycle race, it’s a show and an experience that is the premier motorcycle championship in the world.

SKILLS Supercross riders may be on motorized vehicles, but the riders still must guide those heavy machines around brutal tracks at high speeds. Races are unbelievably demanding in terms of stamina, strength, coordination, and concentration, and the consequences of mistakes are higher motocross is the most physically demanding sport in the world, and those who do it at this level are professional

than in most sports. Scientific tests suggest supercross/

athletes with demanding training regimens (focusing on both strength and cardio) and strict diets. Road bicycling, running, weight training, and swimming—as well as riding every day, of course—are some of the popular ways riders prepare their bodies.

THE CLASSES There are two divisions racing tonight: the 450SX Class and the 250SX Class. Top riders like Ryan Dungey, Chad Reed, James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto, and Kevin Windham are in the premier 450SX Class, and they ride 450cc four-stroke motorcycles.

FAN GUIDE champion; with the exception of the final race in Las Vegas, you’ll only see one region in action at each round. If a 250SX rider from one region wishes to compete in the other region, he must do so in the 450SX Class.

THE BIKES The primary brands you’ll see racing tonight are from Japan (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha) and Austria (KTM). These motorcycles are modified versions of what you can purchase at your local dealership. The transmissions feature four or five gears, and the shift lever is by the left footpeg. The rear-brake lever is by the right footpeg, the clutch lever CUDBY

on the left side of the handlebar, and the throttle and front brake on the right side of the handlebar. Bikes can be any color, but teams generally stick with the same colors as the stock bikes. As mentioned above, most machines are fourstrokes of either 250cc or 450cc displacement.

450s vs. 250s To the untrained eye, it’s difficult to notice differences between motorcycles in the 450SX and 250SX classes, but that doesn’t mean the bikes are the same! Although there’s a good chance that all the bikes you see (and hear) tonight will be four-strokes, those in the premier class are 450s, while those in the 250SX class are 250s. (The 250s are technically allowed in the big class but almost never used; same goes for 125 two-strokes in the 250SX division.) CUDBY

What exactly do “450” and “250” mean? The numbers refer to engine size, as measured in cubic centimeters of displacement (cylinder bore x piston stroke). The 450s boast more power and torque than the small machines, but they’re also

THE STARTS The most important part of any race is the start. Starting up front is key to finishing there, as even a twenty-lap main event rarely provides enough time to pass twenty riders. Riders line up against a start gate that guarantees everyone leaves at the same time and choose their starting positions based on practice times, while main-event start-spot picks CUDBY

are based on qualifier performance. (In most motorsports, the inside starting spot is preferred, but supercross riders usually choose the straightest line possible to the first turn, usually toward the middle of the gate.)

THE MONSTER ENERGY SUPERCROSS

FAN GUIDE AGES In order to earn an AMA professional license, a rider must be at least 16 years old. Riders with successful careers can compete professionally well into their thirties.

PROFESSIONAL RACING The path to professional supercross is long, difficult, and expensive. More often than not, these athletes got their start competing in small, local-level motocross races as kids, often as young as 4 on 50cc machines. That leads to more prominent races with tougher competition, such as amateur national events. Some will have tried their hand at CUDBY

AMSOIL Arenacross, the official feeder system of Monster Energy Supercross. To make it through these stages, a rider must have talent and extreme dedication, and only the best and most determined will advance. This is why supercross represents the pinnacle of dirt bike racing, both in skill and prestige. Simply qualifying for a Monster Energy Supercross main event places a rider among the world’s fastest and most talented racers.

THE TRACK As you’ve probably noticed by now, supercross definitely isn’t oval racing! Among the obstacles riders must negotiate every lap are whoop sections (brutal washboards where riders try to skim along the tops of the bumps), rhythm sections (irregular series of jumps with a variety of combination CUDBY

options), and triple jumps (three jumps in a row that riders clear in a single leap of 70 feet or more). Many of the turns have banked berms, but some are flat. Soil conditions can be hard-packed, soft, muddy, sandy, rutted, or any combi-

WHAT DO RACERS AND FANS HAVE IN COMMON?

THE PASSION FOR

RIDING T

he racers you see on the track tonight all have one thing

in common—something they also share with many fans in the stands. They are all members of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA). As members, they’re

doing their part to protect our sport, save money, and enjoy racing their motorcycles. And you can be a part of the same group too. Actually, many of the racers (and fans) at tonight’s Monster

Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, have been AMA members for quite a long time. In some cases, they have been members since they were only 4 years old, when they first competed on small 50cc motorcycles. KARDAS

These racers have been members for several reasons. But the main one is that their love of racing and motorcycles aligns them with the AMA’s primary mission: to promote the motorcycle lifestyle and protect the future of motorcycling. Without the work and support of AMA members to beat down anti-motorcycling laws and to sanction the country’s largest calendar of motorcycle races, rides, and rallies, motorcycling simply wouldn’t be as healthy and vibrant as it is today. The colorful race bikes and rock-star athletes on the track tonight are proof that the sport is doing well. At the same time, there are plenty of other great reasons why they are AMA members—and why you, too, should become one. If you race, you know the AMA is the gold standard in motorcycle competition in the United States. Every year, more HOLTER

than 3,000 AMA-sanctioned races funnel the best of the best to pro racetracks and stadiums for the finest motorcycle competition on the planet. If you’re an off-road motorcyclist, you know that your right

UNDER ATTACK:

YOUR RIGHT TO RIDE AND RACE D o you love taking your bike off-road? Riding through the desert or on forest trails? Or maybe you enjoy the thrill of competition?

Whatever your motorcycling passion, the threats

facing motorcyclists loom large. People opposed to motorcycling want to tell you how to live your life. The government wants to eliminate your access to public land and trails. And more and more health insurance plans aren’t covering injuries suffered in motorcycle crashes. The AMA is fighting to protect your right to ride The greatest defense against the many threats to motorcycling is the power unleashed by thousands

and race. But the AMA can’t do it alone.

of motorcyclists banding together. Politicians understand strength in numbers. More members means more political clout. The AMA has proven this with significant victories, including being the leading advocate for riders in overturning a recent federal law that banned the sale of kids’ dirt bikes and ATVs. The AMA also played a major role in saving the federal Recreational Trails Program that U.S. lawmakers wanted to end in 2012. The program provides funds to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trailrelated facilities for both non-motorized and motorized recreational trail uses. But our fight for the right to ride and race continues. Enemies of off-road riding and racing at the local, state, and national levels all have one goal in mind: to stop motorcyclists from riding. They want to ban responsible riding on millions of acres of public land that your taxes pay for. They even want to stop people from riding in their own back yards. They want to shut down racetracks and other private riding areas. If they have their way, there won’t be any place Join the fight to protect motorcycling. Join the AMA: (800) AMA-JOIN (262-5646).

I won it in 2009. It’s obviously the first race and there are big expectations from all the built-up pressure of the off-season, and that makes it pretty exciting. The first few races, really, have extra pressure until you finally get into your routine. “The Anaheim dirt, it gets beat up because they run a lot of events there—not only supercross but also Monster Jam. It can get slippery. But I like it. I have no complaints because it’s in my back yard in Southern California. “Growing up, I went to pretty much every race they had there, back when Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael were battling, and before that. I had no clue I would ever be there myself. It’s just a great race—the only thing I can really say is that the season opener in Anaheim is awesome.”

It’s even rained a few times, but the dirt was still pretty good and manageable. It’s a tough track because the dirt is soft, which makes a lot of ruts. “Overall, it’s one of my favorite circuits, one I look forward to on the West Coast and really all year round for the full supercross season. Since the race has been in Oakland, I’ve been two-for-two on wins. One was a muddy win and one was a great battle to the finish with a bunch of guys, so that was a really fun one. I look forward to showing up again this year and seeing what’s in store.”

and the fact that I’m the winningest rider there means a lot. Every time I’ve been there as a full-time rider in the big class, I’ve been on the podium. I just go there, and for some reason the atmosphere, the dirt, the stadium, it has a special feel to me. It was my first ever race in the U.S. when I tried one in 1999. Now it’s grown into kind of like my home event. I also like that it’s the first football stadium we race in each year after all the baseball stadiums, and I’ve always preferred the layout of the football stadiums. “They started using new dirt there a few years ago, and it’s actually more like Anaheim dirt now. It’s harder, where it used to be a little softer and rut up more. For me it’s really just about the vibe—if you go to a race you’re dreading, it seems like it never starts off good, where when you go to a stadium that has worked for you in the past, everything feels good all day.”

that was pretty special. That was the last race in the old RCA Dome. Now we race in Lucas Oil Stadium, and that place is just amazing. It’s very comfortable and would be a great place to watch the race from. The pits are outside. Some teams pit out there; others set something up inside. And we actually sign autographs up in the concourse instead of the pits, which is unique. It’s nice to get to do something different. “The dirt is very soft there. It can get very rutted, and when that happens you have to be precise. The whoops and the corners get really rutted and you have to be smart with line selection. When it’s soft like that, sometimes the whoops are nonexistent by the end of the race—they’ll break down that badly. Some people have been saying the dirt is getting harder there, but that was only the case one year. Every other year it still seemed pretty soft, so you have to handle the ruts.”

growing up in Canada, and Toronto is a great city. I have lots of friends and family up there and tons of fans that support me, so I always enjoy going. “The track is always pretty challenging. Because of the cold and snow, the dirt usually has some frost and moisture in it. It ruts up quite a bit, tends to have some rocks, and breaks down as the night goes on. The pits are outside, which can be cold but isn’t really a factor. Last time I was there I won, so I can deal with it!”

I’m a big fan of Texas—I love the food and the people, so I’m always excited when it’s time to go back. I have a ritual when I get to Texas every year: I land and go straight from the plane to Spring Creek BBQ and eat as much as I can. “At Houston last year I finished fourth. “Having supercross back in Minneapolis is really exciting for me. Every year as a kid we would go to that race, and it would really help getting through those winters, because they can be kind of long up there! I was actually able to race it once as part of the KTM Jr. Supercross Challenge, which was really cool. And the time of year they’re holding it now, the fans are ready to start getting out and seeing some action. “Holding it in April, they should be able to have the pits outside, so the fans should get a different experience than before. Inside, the track should have good dirt, so there should be some good racing too.”

It’s rarely dry there, so you can expect deep ruts and a developing track. I’ve won there a few times, but the past two years haven’t been the greatest. RIDICULOUS

“Salt Lake City is different every year. The first year I raced it rained and snowed and hailed and it was freezing. The track was super muddy, but that actually made it a fun race. I think it’s cool being there. You’re at altitude and your bike is a little bit slower, and the track changes every year with the weather. So far, I think it’s the track that changes the most from year to year, and that makes it a challenge. You’ll look at the weather and think it’s going to be great, and it’ll turn crazy—or it will look bad and turn out okay. When it’s cold, your hands go numb during the race and your fingers hurt so bad it’s ridiculous. When K-Dub won in 2010 and I got second, my hands were numb the second lap! Either way, you’re going to freeze with the wind chill. “As far as being in shape, I don’t think the altitude makes much of a difference. Everybody’s in good enough shape where it doesn’t matter in a short supercross main.”

It seems like that place gets the most fans that travel across the United States to go to it. It’s not just the Vegas crowd or California crowd—the crowd is from all over. “It’s normally slippery. They try to get as much water down as they can. If it starts wet, it’s normally good for the heats, but by the mains that just means it’s that much harder and that much bumpier. They always seem to go bigger for the jumps there, which is something different. For that race it always seems like the triples are a little bit bigger. That’s okay when it’s the last race of the year. Going to A1, everyone is pretty nervous, but by the last race we can usually jump everything on the first lap of practice.”

3 CHAMPIONS. 1 TIRE BRAND. The 2012 Supercross season provided loads of great racing, but when it came to tires it was business as usual: Dunlop swept all three championships. That’s quite an accomplishment, especially considering that all racers are free to choose between multiple brands of tires. Yet Dunlop riders filled the overwhelming majority of podium positions all season long, and our national championship total in the dirt now exceeds 122. More importantly, the same Geomax® tires that have won so many pro races are available to all off-road riders. Because our championship-winning tire performance for pro racers inspires the technology that goes into the tires we build for weekend riders as well.

Challenge (KJSC) makes its return at select rounds. After a five-year absence, the KJSC—which has featured current stars like Ryan Dungey, Eli Tomac, Blake Baggett, Cole Seely, Blake Wharton, and many more in the past—will kick off in Anaheim on February 2. KJSC racers will be supplied with identically prepared KTM 50cc SXS race bikes and will have the opportunity to scope out the racing surface alongside the pros during the track walk, and again in two dedicated practice sessions in the afternoon. The highlight of these young racers’ nights will come when they compete in a three-lap exhibition race during the night show in front of a packed stadium. “We are excited to have the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge back as a part of the 2013 Monster Energy Supercross season,” says Todd Jendro, Feld Motor Sports’® Vice President of Two Wheel Operations. “The program provides an exciting and entertaining element for our Monster Energy Supercross audience, but more importantly, the KJSC provides a great opportunity for the youth of the sport to showcase their talent and gives us a glimpse into the next generation of supercross superstars.”

The return of the KJSC has been in the works for quite some time now—in fact, Feld Motor Sports and KTM have been discussing its revival since before the start of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season. Explains KTM Sports Marketing Manager Christy LaCurelle, “Both parties were eager about the program’s return and felt that 2013 would be a great time to resurrect the program.” This time around, Monster Energy Supercross won’t be the KJSC’s only destination. In addition to its five scheduled Monster Energy Supercross appearances, the popular program will also be present at a pair of AMSOIL Arenacross rounds in 2013. “With all of the success the KJSC has had in the past with Monster Energy Supercross, we are excited to expand the program into AMSOIL Arenacross for 2013,” Jendro says. “The KJSC program has been a springboard for notable factory standouts such as Ryan Dungey, Mike Alessi, and Eli Tomac to name a few, so we are pleased to promote this positive and family-friendly program into our sport.” Over its first thirteen years, this celebrated program has provided more than 2,500 boys and girls with the thrilling and unforgettable experience of racing in the same stadium as their heroes in front of thousands of screaming fans. Parents who are interested in learning more about how to get their kids involved in this oncein-a-lifetime opportunity should visit www.ktmjrsx.com, the official website of the KJSC. Participants must be 7 or 8 years old.

SX NOW THE FINALS

W

hile every round is unique, picking the can’t-miss race of the year is easy: it’s the Monster Energy Supercross finale in Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Supercross is the crucible for

riders still in the hunt for a championship. It’s the final opportunity of the season for competitors in all classes to earn invaluable championship points, and when the checkered flag flies, dreams are simultaneously realized and shattered. As a result, the final round of Monster Energy Supercross always produces some of the most inspiring rides and craziest races of the season, as riders give it their all to claim a piece of racing history. CUDBY

When the racing is over in Vegas, three new champions will be crowned. While the other races are integral, points-paying rounds, Vegas is the culmination of the sixteen preceding events, making it the only place where fans can see racers officially become champions. Then there’s the Dave Coombs Sr. East-West Shootout, the only supercross race where the Western and Eastern Regional 250SX riders go up against one another. What results is an all-out brawl to determine the best 250SX rider in the world. It’s epic. Even the track in Vegas is over the top—it’s longer than any other in the series, with the start actually taking place outside the stadium! As racers circulate the track and approach the open end of Sam Boyd Stadium, they once

mergency medical care has come a long, long way in this sport. Less than two decades ago, supercross riders were being watched over by a simple ambulance company whose staff may not have been experienced

with motorcycle racing. That made for slow and cautious care for injured riders, delaying treatment and hospital transport (if necessary). Needless to say, riders and industry personnel were thrilled when Asterisk introduced its Mobile Medic Unit, a rolling emergency medical center with a regular staff at each event. Dr. John Bodnar, Eddie Casillas (ATC), and orthopedic surgeons Paul Reiman and Chris Alexander attend every event on the schedule along with volunteer firefighters/paramedics and nurses. As a COX

S

upercross veterans will be happy to know that Dianna Dahlgren has returned as the official spokesmodel of 2013 Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship, for the third straight season. If you’ve attended a race in

the past two years, there’s no doubt you’ve seen her making her way around the stadium during the night show, or perhaps even brushed by her while hanging out at the Party in the Pits. As Miss Supercross, Dianna complements the racing atmosphere by interacting with the fans and hooking them up with some cool swag every now and then. Being Miss Supercross tends to fill up a schedule fairly quickly, but Dianna doesn’t seem to mind. “I’ve loved it since I can remember,” Dahlgren says. “I’ll be out

there in the rain or wind, cold or heat. I can’t wait to talk to all of the fans!” Dianna also has an online presence at SupercrossOnline.com, the official website of Monster Energy Supercross. You can keep up with her after every race in her Miss SX column, or better yet, watch the very entertaining and often funny SX Ed with Miss Supercross videos featuring Dahlgren and a variety of major players in the sport. Although Dianna always loved motocross growing up, the 22-yearold Temecula Valley native finds other ways to get out and stay active when she’s not at the races. “During the winter, I absolutely love snowboarding at Mammoth and in Utah,” she explains. “As for summer, I love going out on the boats at Havasu and the river!”
