Riders will be racing for the $1 million through three ten-lap Main Events on a track designed by fifteen-time AMA National Champion—and the Greatest of All Time—Ricky Carmichael. The Carmichael-inspired layout consists of supercross and motocross obstacles and is unlike any other racetrack in the world. Along with the world’s top supercross and motocross racers, the top Amateur All-Star, Super-Mini, and KTM Junior Supercross riders will share the stage and battle it out on the same track as the riders they look up to. Competing in two six-lap Main Events, the Amateur All-Star and Super-Mini riders will showcase their talents and give fans a preview of the sport’s future. The KTM Junior Supercross riders will duke it out in one three-lap race. Headlining the Amateur All-Star class will

EVERYTHING

ON THE LINE A Monster Energy Cup win could pay a million bucks—but its value is even higher

T

he Monster Energy Cup features plenty of unique elements—track, format, rules, and even the time of year—but it’s impossible for the elite riders to separate it from the big picture. The ultimate goal of any professional dirt bike rider is to claim the Monster Energy Supercross Championship, and any edge that helps toward that goal is worth fighting for. When the pack lines up each year at the Monster Energy Cup, they’re fighting for a chance to put their names in the history books, but they’re also looking their fiercest rivals in the face and trying to prove that they’re truly the best of the best. Couple all that with the chance to win the $1 million grand prize, and you’ve got the goods for an ultimate one-night showdown.

RULES BARELY APPLY

like a split start, the Joker Lane, and the Amsoil Arch have become part of the event as well. While many are novel ideas, Carmichael lends the credibility that means they will work. The racing format is unique too. Unlike in Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, the Monster Energy Cup puts all bikes and riders into the same class. Regulations on equipment are just as relaxed: besides fuel and sound regulations, all modifications are allowed. Even the event winner is determined in a unique fashion, with three ten-lap main events replacing the traditional twenty-lap main of a typical supercross race. A mainevent win earns one point, second two points, and so on. At the end of the three races, the rider with the lowest score wins. Still, it would take a night of racing for everyone to see the Monster Energy Cup format in earnest—until the gates dropped for the first time ever in 2011, no one had ever witnessed most of these el-

+

rom the start, this event was designed to work like no other. With the help of five-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael, the Monster Energy Cup has rushed in a flurry of new ideas. Carmichael, adept as a racer on both technical indoor supercross circuits and grueling, fast outdoor motocross ones, designed a track with elements of both. With a high-speed front straight that starts outside Sam Boyd Stadium, riders explore new speed limits; without a standard supercross whoop section, momentum and corner speed become paramount—as does close racing! knee surgery, so many were looking for a weakness. They didn’t find one in the first race, where he blew the field away again. Race two, though, set the tone not only for the night, but for this race in general. Fittingly for a race in Las Vegas, when Villopoto crashed hard while leading, all bets were off. The crash was enough to knock Villopoto out of the racing for the rest of the night, and in came young challengers like Honda’s Justin Barcia and Eli Tomac. Even pitted against established Monster Energy Supercross Champions like Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, and Chad Reed, Barcia and Tomac weren’t intimidated. Championships in the 250SX division proved their talent, and in one of their first opportunities to bang bars with the best on 450s, they came out on top. In Barcia’s case, consistency carried the day. Villopoto crashed out in race two, while Dungey smashed a Tuff Block with his transmission-shift lever in both of the first two races. Never one to give up, Dungey reached down with his hand to grab the bent lever—in midair—and still managed to finish right behind Barcia in both races. The second race was incredible, with Barcia outdueling Dungey, Reed, and Mike Alessi to steal a critical moto win. In the final race, Tomac came back strong to top everyone. Barcia’s solid scores earned him the overall win, and while it wasn’t the $1 million sweep like RV’s a year earlier, it still paid $100,000. In 2011, the Monster Energy Cup cemented Villopoto’s lead-dog status; in 2012, it was used as the launch pad for a new group of talent. A little bit of both was in store for 2013.

2014 MEC Events.indd 2

NEW AND IMPROVED

T

ry as the rookies might, they and the rest could not unseat the mighty Villopoto from another Monster Energy Supercross title in 2013. He overcame long odds and a big points deficit to claim that title, so he rolled into the Monster Energy Cup as the easy favorite. This time, the race’s unique elements stopped him—and others. The Joker Lane debuted in 2012. It’s an extra track section that adds to a rider’s lap time but must be taken once during a ten-lap main event. Somehow, everyone handled it with ease that first year, but it all broke loose in 2013. In the first main event, Dungey shadowed Villopoto the whole way until he forgot to take the Joker Lane, flying past while Villopoto took it. As per the rules, Dungey was immediately penalized five spots for skipping the section. Villopoto was the first to explain it to him, and Dungey’s reaction—slamming his hands into his helmet— will forever live in Monster Energy Cup lore. The Joker Lane was a new element, but the next challenge was very familiar. James Stewart, a two-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion who had previously missed the Monster Energy Cup due to team switches and injury troubles, was signed up for 2013. A crash left him eighth in the first race, but he came back with a vengeance in race two, challenging Villopoto at every turn. They battled to the final lap until, inexplicably, Villopoto made the same mistake Dungey did and forgot the Joker Lane! Moments later, he made a huge mistake on a jump and crashed out of the event—shades of the previous year. Stewart, forgotten about after his eighth in the first race, was suddenly in contention. He’d have to outduel Barcia and newcomer Ken Roczen to do it, and Stewart used his championship experience to do just that in race three. He left Vegas $100,000 richer. Through three events, the Monster Energy Cup has produced three distinct winners. Villopoto cemented his status in 2011, Barcia broke out in 2012, and Stewart showed a rejuvenated spirit in 2013. In a race like this, anything goes—and anyone can win.

ements. Before the first race was run, though, there was one factor everyone could understand: cold, hard cash. With Monster Energy putting a million bucks on the line, this event was legitimized immediately, and Ryan Villopoto pounded the point home by sweeping all three mains and taking the $1 million bounty. That didn’t take long! For Villopoto, the 2011 win capped an amazing season that proved he was the very best dirt bike racer in the world. From his first Monster Energy Supercross title to huge triumphs in U.S. motocross and even on the international stage with a Team USA win at the Motocross of Nations, Villopoto was proving himself without equal. The 2012 event witnessed a massive influx of talent, though, each rider hoping to claim the $1 million and measure themselves against Villopoto, by then a two-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion. Villopoto himself was coming off of major

Leading the charge this year are 2012 winner Justin Barcia, Eli Tomac, Trey Canard, and Ryan Dungey, who is probably just hoping for an uneventful night— Dungey’s shifter malfunctioned twice in 2012, and last year he forgot to take the Joker Lane! unique track in racing. With major input from Ricky Carmichael himself, this year’s track fits right in with the over-the-top, no-limits theme the event is famous for. Here’s what’s in store for the riders.

SPLIT START

+

M

ost races get underway with riders lined up next to each other behind a gate, but the Monster Energy Cup separates the field into two eleven-man groups. When the gate drops, they all blast off at the same time before immediately launching over a jump. Eleven of them then take a lane on the left, while the remaining half go right, entering the stadium on opposite sides and reaching speeds in excess of 70 mph as they rocket down identical drag strips that run the length of the stadium. Once riders complete two big bowl turns, they’re funneled back together into a single pack. “The Split Start is going to be cool,” Carmichael says. “I think it’s awesome, and from a safety standpoint it’s going to be way better too.” Race organizers have taken every precaution to make sure that both sides of the track are equal. As an added failsafe, riders will alternate sides for each of the night’s three races.

“The Joker Lane will be fun,” Carmichael says. “Each lane has different elements to it. There’s a nice, flat sweeper if you don’t take it, and sometimes sweepers generate good racing.” When racers do take the Joker Lane, they’ll be met with an interesting jump combination—a first for this year, as this has traditionally been a sand section. Both Ryan Villopoto and Ryan Dungey forgot to take their Joker Lane laps last year. For Dungey, the mistake was especially costly—after winning the race, he was docked five positions. The Joker Lane may have a funny name, but it’s all business!

AMSOIL ARCH

+

The AMSOIL Arch is another key component that makes the Monster Energy Cup so exciting, adding some 100 feet of elevation to the track—and it gets that height by going up through the stands! Thanks to the Arch’s long, banked design, riders are able to carry plenty of speed here. It’s also proven to be an excellent passing area, so be sure to keep your eye on this hot spot.

MONSTER ALLEY

+

T

he start’s two massive drag strips were too exciting to drop after the beginning of the race, so they’ve been integrated into the full track layout. One exits the stadium, leading outside and by the Rebel Experience area before joining Monster Alley, a long, high-speed sweeper that leads directly into the second drag strip that reenters the stadium. With riders already going extremely fast upon reentry, they’re going to be clicking gears and pinning throttles, wringing every ounce of speed out of their machines as they barrel down the straightaway. Don’t blink!

JOKER LANE

+

Unique to the Monster Energy Cup, the Joker Lane is the most distinctive portion of the track. Riders are required to navigate this devilish extra section of track once per race. The longer, tougher stretch will add time to their lap, which means strategy will be necessary in deciding when to enter the lane.

RHYTHM AND BLUES

+

s riders exit the AMSOIL Arch, they’ll immediately enter a long and tricky section of sand whoops that will steadily deteriorate and get rougher as the night wears on. Riders have to pin the throttle here if they want a shot at winning, but the faster they go, the more likely they are to swap or get bucked off. This section requires a delicate balance of courage and smarts.

A

ny good track has plenty of rhythm sections—they’re just bigger and harder at the Monster Energy Cup. Last year saw an especially tricky section that most riders were tripling, with only the bravest choosing to drop the hammer and turn it into a quad. That worked well for James Stewart, who used the move to distance himself from challengers, but these sections can turn sour at any moment. Just ask Ryan Villopoto, who crashed out in that very same section and was forced to sit out the rest of the night. Don’t expect the design to mellow out any, though—this year’s track is full of challenging options that will demand razorsharp concentration as much as sheer nerve. The huge triple will even be used in the Dirt Shark Biggest Whip Contest. “Everybody is pretty happy about how that race has turned out with track design,” Carmichael says. “It’s hard to improve on things that are so good already, but our style is to work hard, make it the best, and keep improving every year.”

Ricky Carmichael plays a big roll in the Monster Energy Cup track design.

arning: if you see Rob Buydos anywhere near a supercross or motocross event, do not challenge him to a game of trivia. He will smoke you. Rocket Rob is a motorcycle enthusiast through and through, with a garage full of motocross, off-road, and street bikes; a job working with dealerships during the week; and announcing gigs at big events on weekends. The Ohio native has a ton of knowledge and plenty of enthusiasm, and you’ll hear him pumping up the energy all night long. For him, any day around motorcycles is a good day.

WES KAIN

hianna lives, eats, sleeps, and breathes motorcycles, and the Aussie native is involved in a bevy of twowheeled events. She spends most of her time traveling the world emceeing the Flair Action Sports Freestyle Trails demos, which she organizes with her partner Jack Field. In her “down time” she keeps the crowd entertained at Monster Energy Supercross events and right here at the Monster Energy Cup. Rhianna brings an unforgettable look and sound to the evening—gotta dig that accent! She knows what she’s talking about, and we trust you’ll be listening.

SUPERCROSS LIVE!

ou might think you’ve met someone like Wes Kain before, but that’s impossible. No one on earth is like Wes Kain. A hurricane force of personality, passion, and power, he’s pretty much what a can of Monster Energy would look like if it took human form. And like Monster, he has deep roots in this sport. The Floridian announces each round of AMSOIL Arenacross and a number of big amateur races, and he and his sons have strapped on the boots and logged plenty of race laps themselves. Wes is also a co-star of a popular reality show about home repair. With this much energy, you can hold down a lot of gigs.

In a historic first for the sport, the Monster Energy Cup will be the first race to receive national broadcast television coverage on Fox Sports. The ninety-minute special will either follow or precede NFL football coverage—check local listings in your area. This will expose these athletes to a massive new audience that will surely appreciate the intensity and excitement on display. You can catch the event on a wide variety of platforms, starting with live coverage on Fox Sports 2. Fox Sports GO, Fox Sports’ authenticated TV-everywhere app, will carry the race live. The next day, the race will re-air on Fox Sports 1 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern/10:00 a.m. Pacific. A week later, on Sunday, October 26, comes the ninetyminute Fox broadcast, a major milestone for the sport. Calling the action will be these announcing all-stars:

veteran play-byplay broadcaster who knows virtually everything about any kind of racing in any kind of vehicle, Sheheen must have race fuel in his veins. Born and raised in Northern California and now living in the motorsports mecca outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, Sheheen was calling supercross and motocross races straight out of college in the 1980s. He circled back to become the full-time play-byplay man for Monster Energy Supercross on Fox in 2006. During the week, he publishes National Speed Sport News, a well-respected motorsports journal. Despite all that, his knowledge of racing might even be outstripped by his love of 1980s rock music. You can’t go wrong having a conversation with Ralph!

His genuine enthusiasm for the sport and his job was always obvious, and his interactions with the public proved he loved being part of the scene. Even when he retired in 2000, you never heard talk of “Fro” working anywhere but in the sport where he grew up—at one point he even funded his own race team. Fox Sports’ expert supercross analyst since 2007, he’s found a new way to stay involved while sharing his passion for racing with a new audience.

But those icons never shared their knowledge from the broadcast booth! Carmichael likes to stop in and spar with his old buddy Emig as an analyst at select rounds of Monster Energy Supercross and the Monster Energy Cup. Considering he also had a huge hand in designing the racetrack and also runs his own RCH Suzuki race team, he’s got unrivaled insider knowledge. CUDBY

When she’s not at the races, you’ll catch her anchoring news coverage from the Fox Sports studios in Los Angeles, but she’s definitely caught the supercross bug—she’s as enthusiastic as anyone about tonight’s racing. hat’s nearly 5 feet tall, weighs over 200 pounds, and has spent time around Oscars and Emmys? It’s not Danny DeVito—it’s the Monster Energy Cup! Crafted over the course of three and a half months by the same company that makes awards for those entertainment mainstays, this exquisite $12,000 aluminum sculpture is unique and bold as the race itself.

CUDBY CUDBY

The Monster Energy Cup will be on hand at this year’s Monster Energy Cup, so feel free to get your picture with this prestigious piece of motorsports art. Just don’t try to engrave your name in it!

CUDBY

The only downside for racers who win it is that they eventually have to give it back—it’s a traveling trophy, meaning the winner keeps it for a year before handing it over to the next year’s champ. They do get to keep a smaller version of the trophy—which, at 21” tall and 57 pounds, is only miniature in comparison to the real thing. The names of each winner (Ryan Villopoto, Justin Barcia, and James Stewart so far) are etched into the Monster Energy Cup as well.

our freedom to ride and race your motorcycle is under attack from those who would ban backyard tracks, shut down trails, restrict closed-course competition in your hometown, re-write your health insurance to exclude racing-related injuries or allow E15 ethanol fuel that could compromise your bike’s performance. Nobody stands up to and defeats these threats like the American Motorcyclist Association, but we can’t do it without you!

Make the world a better place for racers. Join us today at AmericanMotorcyclist.com or (800) AMA-JOIN.
