WELCOME elcome to the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, a twelve-round tour of America’s best motocross tracks and the most competitive and prestigious motocross championship of all. Thank you for attending to experience a fantastic afternoon of exciting and competitive racing, featuring the best athletes and race teams in all of motorcycling. Lucas Oil Pro Motocross continues to evolve in new directions while staying true to the roots of motocross. For instance, this year’s title chase begins with a return to Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, and ends in August with visits to the two newest stops on the tour, the Indiana National in Crawfordsville and a return to last year’s rookie race at Tooele, Utah’s Miller Motorsports Park. In between those races are the pillars of American motocross, including Buchanan, Michigan’s RedRud National, New Berlin, New York’s Unadilla, Washougal MX Park in Washington, and more. Every facility that hosts a round of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross also features youth and amateur events, helping to grow the sport and groom tomorrow’s stars. Each race’s promoters and staff take great pride in their events and their venues. All of motorcycle racing benefits from their hard work and effort. Those efforts stretch back to 1972, the first year for this championship. Over more than four decades of competition, this series has produced legendary champions from all over the world: Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Ryan Villopoto, James Stewart, Bob Hannah, Rick Johnson,

W

Doug Henry, Jeff Ward, Jean-Michel Bayle, David Bailey, Jeff Emig, Broc Glover, Chad Reed, Grant Langston, and many more. Along with our partners at Alli Sports and AMA Pro Racing and all of the event promoters, MX Sports Pro Racing works year-round to improve this championship with better racetracks and facilities, expanded television and online coverage, and greater opportunities for our athletes and the motorcycle industry—not to mention a memorable fan experience at every stop. With valued series partners like Lucas Oil, Red Bull, Thor/Parts Unlimited, Air National Guard, GoPro, Oakley, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and more, Lucas Oil Pro Motocross has stronger support than ever. We’ve all worked together to make it easier than ever to follow the sport. There are live broadcasts from every race on NBC, NBC Sports, and MAVTV. Lucas Oil Pro Motocross also offers live (and free) streaming online at www.promotocross.com/motocross, as well as archived shows. The series’ Instagram and Twitter feeds are @promotocross, and you can also follow us on our Pro Motocross Facebook page. MX Sports Pro Racing, NBC Sports, and all of our partners would once again like to welcome you to the 2014 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship to watch the best motocross racers in the world, on the best motocross tracks of all. We hope you have a fun, safe afternoon, and thank you for coming out to the races. The MX Sports Pro Racing Staff

o matter which race or races you attend, excitement is easy to come by in Lucas Oil Pro Motocross—watching the

world’s best riders deftly maneuver exotic machines around some of the most challenging tracks on the globe is quite an experience! But some of the series’ finer points may not be so obvious. Here are the answers for some of the most common questions in motocross.

HOW DO RACES GET UNDERWAY? Prior to the start of a race, competitors line up behind a long metal gate that’s attached to the ground with hinges. At this point the gate is pointed upward, but when it comes time to begin, the gate

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A NATIONAL AND THE LUCAS OIL PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP? The word National refers to a single event. Lucas Oil Pro Motocross refers to a group of Nationals (twelve in all) held across the United States. Points are earned at each National based on finishing position, and the rider who has the most points at the end of the season becomes the 2014 National Champion in his class.

The engines are extremely powerful—just

WHY DO THE RIDERS SEEM SO EXHAUSTED AFTER A RACE? DOESN’T THE ENGINE DO ALL THE WORK? holding on can be tiring—but they only move the bike forward. Riders constantly make rapid corrections and line changes, all while rushing forward on a racing surface that is extremely rough and choppy. Riders shift from sitting to standing throughout an average lap; add frequent triple-digit heat and stifling humidity, and you’ve got a physical challenge that only the fittest athletes can endure. A recent study found that only World Cup soccer requires more stamina.

WHO IS ALLOWED TO RACE? For the safety of all involved, only licensed professionals are allowed to race in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. Pro racing licenses are obtained

GAME OF

SURVIVAL Every moment could be the one that changes a championship in Lucas Oil Pro Motocross

A

fter forty years of evolution, much of the guesswork has been removed from the motocross racing laboratory. Through

the first dozen years of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, bikes, teams, training programs, and tracks developed at a dizzying pace, the sport exploding into new and sometimes almost unrecognizable forms. Today’s Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship represents the most refined version of that species, and the changes are more subtle. Bikes closely resemble production models (on the outside), and every rider employs a full-time staff of trainers and coaches to maximize their performance. It’s harder and every season, something small will determine the gap between the champion

to spot the changes, but they’re there,

and everyone else.

championships have boiled down to a pair of Ryans—Villopoto and Dungey. with Villopoto winning in 2011 and 2013. When the duo is healthy and on the track together, their dynamic ebbs and flows. Back in ’11, they traded the points lead back and forth all year, along with 2009 titlist Chad Reed. Villopoto missed all of ’12 with a knee injury, but last year saw them battling again. Villopoto had the

Ken Roczen’s (94) departure to 450s opens the door for 250 Class contenders like Justin Bogle (34). Similarly, with Eli Tomac (17) moving up, sophomore Jeremy Martin (77) is a serious 250 threat.

THE SMALL BIKES Tomac is sure to be a 450 force; he may be young, but he understands the game, and he rode a late-season surge to last year’s 250 Class Championship. It was Roczen who got the jump on everyone early last season, his resounding 1-1 sweep at the opening round giving him the early points lead. Tomac stayed close early on but found a completely new level at the halfway mark. The Colorado kid announced his new era with a stunning come-from-behind ride at Maryland’s rocious pack that includes Cooper Webb,

250 Class Champion Eli Tomac (@elitomac) and 450 Class champ Ryan Villopoto (@ryan_villopoto2), using the hashtag #AskMXChamps. Here’s what they said. @ESchroeder927: Favorite workout? VILLOPOTO: We usually stick to a pretty similar program during the season, so my favorite would be anything new that we add in or do that’s not part of our usual routine. It becomes a challenge and something you can look forward to. TOMAC: Riding my mountain bike.

ON THE WEB ProMotocross.com Whether it’s midweek or mid-moto, ProMotocross.com is the only 24/7 all-encompassing motocross site on the web. As the official website of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, ProMotocross.com is the only site to stream live event coverage and every moto from each National. Aside from its unmatched live event coverage, ProMotocross.com is the home to a collection of pro rider bios, the sport’s latest breaking news, every event’s results archive and more.

@ktmbaronet: How does the professional life feel? Does it ever “become a job” and suck the fun out of riding? VILLOPOTO: It’s a job for sure, but one I’m very fortunate to have. We have a lot of commitments and have to be very self-disciplined to win, but riding is always fun and that’s why I started riding to begin with. TOMAC: There are a lot more fun days than the days you

don’t want to do it. Until it goes the opposite way, I’ll keep riding my dirt bike.

@Craig2daSlater: Favorite MX track and why? Also, what was your favorite [round] to race last year? VILLOPOTO: Unadilla is definitely one of my favorites and my favorite last year. It’s always one of the toughest and gnarliest. Last year I was fastest in practice, got both holeshots, and swept the day. It also happens to be my birthday weekend, so

that made it that much better. TOMAC: I would have to say RedBud in Michigan. That’s the best track on the motocross circuit. It’s the best crowd, the best layout, the best dirt. Overall, it’s my favorite track. My favorite race would be the Utah National because it’s where I wrapped up my 250 Class title. That was a pretty cool moment. @nathanboggs199: Who is your favorite riders to battle with?

VILLOPOTO: I enjoy battling the past champions. Dungey, Reed, Stewart, and I are all at the top of our games and respect each other, so I know we can battle clean and let the best man win.

TOMAC: That’s a tough one. It’s pretty cool to be riding with James Stewart and Chad Reed. They’re the best guys on the planet, and it’s pretty cool to be right there with them.

n partnership with MX Sports Pro Racing and Alli Sports— organizers of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing— Oakley, one of the world’s leading sports brands, has announced the return of the Oakley Bomb Fastest Lap Program for 2014. The weekly Oakley Bomb trophy will go to the fastest clocked timed qualifying laps by a rider at each of the twelve Nationals for both the 250 and 450 Classes. The rider who accumulates the most Bombs throughout the season will receive an Elite Oakley Swiss Automatic Watch at the end of the year. Ryan Villopoto and Eli Tomac took the honors in the 2013 450 and 250 Classes, respectively. The Bomb is Oakley’s commitment to recognizing the achievements of the sport’s top riders. With its heritage deeply rooted in motocross (high-tech grips were its first product in 1975), Oakley’s prominence in the sport continues with a collection of its most elite current riders. Through James Stewart, Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, GEICO Honda, Joe Gibbs Racing, Troy Lee Designs, and many more, the company’s spirit is alive and well in Lucas Oil Pro Motocross.
