THE CLASSES THE SKILLS There are two divisions racing tonight: the 450SX Class and the 250SX Class. Top riders like Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, Chad Reed, James Stewart, Davi Millsaps, Trey Canard, and Justin Barcia are in the premier 450SX Class, and they ride 450cc fourstroke motorcycles. The 250SX Class is populated primarily by younger riders on 250cc four-stroke motorcycles. The class is split into Eastern and Western Regions, each of which crowns its own champion; with the exception of the series finale, you’ll only see one region in action at each round. If a 250SX Class rider from one region wishes to compete in the other, he must do so in the 450SX Class. At the final race of the season in Las Vegas, the East and West regions meet in the Dave Coombs Sr. Memorial East-West Shootout.
Monster Energy Supercross riders may be on motorized vehicles, but the engine certainly doesn’t do all the work. Riders must guide those heavy machines around brutal tracks at high speeds, and you’ll notice they’re rarely even sitting down on the bike, instead using their arms, legs, and core to manipulate it in the desired direction. Races are unbelievably demanding in terms of stamina, strength, coordination, and concentration, and the consequences of mistakes are higher than in most sports. Scientific tests suggest supercross/motocross is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world, and those who do it at this level are professional athletes with demanding training regimens (focusing on both strength and cardio) and strict diets. Road bicycling, running, weight training, and swimming—as well as riding every day, of course— are some of the popular ways riders prepare their bodies.

QUALIFYING
THE SIGNALS
Each class has a main event at night’s end—fifteen laps for the 250SX Class and twenty for the 450SX Class. A Monster Energy Supercross starting gate can only take a maximum of twenty-two riders, so fields must be whittled down. During the afternoon practice sessions, each racer’s laps are timed via electronic transponders, and the top forty in each class make it into the night program. Once there, riders take part in one of two heat races per class. Riders who qualify from the heats go directly to the main event. Riders in the 450SX Class who don’t qualify in the heat race go to a Semi Final race, and if they don’t qualify through that, they get one last shot in the aptly named Last Chance Qualifier. In the 250SX Class, riders compete in just a heat race and a Last Chance Qualifier to seed the main event. Riders who don’t make it into the Main Events are finished for the night and will receive no series points that weekend.
Riders are not allowed to wear radios in their helmets, so they get information in other ways—specifically, via color-coded flags. Yellow (with accompanying yellow flashing lights) warns that another rider is down or stalled ahead; blue informs a rider he’s about to be lapped; crossed white and green flags at the finish tell riders the race is at the halfway mark; white indic indicates one lap remaining. Of course, the checkers come out ffor the finish. Teams communicate with the riders by yw writing messages on dry-erase boards and holding them in view of the rider. These are called pit boards, and they can o only displayed in the designated mechanics’ area. Rarely, a red flag will be displayed, indicating indic a premature end to the race. while a black fla flag means the rider must exit the track. A red flashing light lig at the beginning of a triple jump means a rid rider is down and racers should roll th jumps and the not attempt passes.
NATIONALITIES Many racers on the track tonight hail from all over the United States, but as the most prestigious off-road motorcycle racing championship on the planet, Monster Energy Supercross attracts the best racers from across the globe. Amon Among the nonU. countries U.S. rrepresented are Australia, France, Germany, Ecuador, S Scotland, and So South Africa.
AGES In order to earn an AMA professional license, a rider must be at least 16 years old. Riders with successful careers can compete professionally well into their thirties.
THE MONEY Riders on factory teams (and most satellite teams) earn salaries, with top earners pulling down seven figures a year plus win bonuses as high as $100,000 and championship incentives approaching $1 million. Bonuses are regularly paid for podium or top-five finishes, and riders can pick up additional money (both base and bonuses) from other sponsors. It’s not impossible for a top racer to earn $10 million in a year. As for the equipment, the base motorcycles go for around $7,000, but they’re extensively modified to increase power, decrease weight, and improve suspension performance. A factory bike can be worth around $70,000 by the time it’s rolled into the stadium.

his year marks the fortieth anniversary of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, the most prestigious
series in dirt bike racing. The championship will criss-cross the continent from Southern California to New York City, from Houston to Toronto. There are seventeen stops altogether, at many of the best-known venues in sports. Supercross enthusiasts from all over the world will watch as the global television package and online platforms continue to expand. It’s a far cry from the humble roots of this championship, which stretch back to 1974. Forty years ago, the idea of racing motorcycles inside a downtown stadium was still something of a novelty. Flat track and TT scrambles racing goes back to the late sixties, and Daytona International Speedway was hosting a motocross race on its infield as early as 1971.

Team Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey is the constant thorn in Villopoto’s side. The two Ryans have been banging bars for years, and since 2010, one of them has reigned as Monster Energy Supercross Champion. The Ryans are a contrast in styles, though, as Villopoto is smaller in stature but more aggressive on the bike. That makes him very fast, but he has been vulnerable to crashes and injuries. Dungey is ever steady, as consistent as anyone in the game. While each takes a different approach on the track, Dungey’s program is similar to Villopoto’s off of it. He is all business. He rides and trains at Ricky Carmichael’s place in Florida as much as possible but stays in California when it’s needed. WHERE CHAMPIONS ARE GROWN While the riders represent varied ages, builds, backgrounds, and skills, the formula for success is similar. There are homes and practice tracks throughout the Inland Empire of Southern California where these stars can hone their skills, with each of the five major bike brands controlling several test tracks and race shops. Back east, the Florida/Georgia border is lined with private tracks, as Barcia, Dungey, Millsaps, and others have set up their East Coast shop in that area. Villopoto and Stewart have places in Central Florida, while Reed’s track is closer to the Tampa area. Tickle often stops by the Carmichael farm near Tallahassee, where Dungey trains, while Weimer and Roczen share Villopoto’s place. In the center of the country, Canard has a facility in his native Oklahoma, and Hahn, a Kansas native, works in Texas. The dual-coast nature of the top riders slots in on the RCH/RAM Suzuki team,

“A1 is an awesome race. The atmosphere is amazing. With it being the first race, everyone gets to see what everyone else has, so the whole day is full of adrenaline. The weather is mostly good unless it rains or gets really cold, and the dirt is normally really good too. It’s a race that you have on your list that you really want to win, and for me, winning it last year was one of my most special wins. “The fans at A1 are crazy and wide open; they love supercross. It’s awesome that we get to race in front of fans like that and interact with them all day. I’d say that A1 has some of the best fans of the year.”

’09
In 2009, race leaders James Stewart and Chad Reed got together and went down, handing the lead to 450 rookie Josh Grant, who went to work building a lead. Along the way, a plastic banner got sucked into his wheel and his machine started smoking, giving doubt that he’d even be able to finish the race. But Grant—and his Yamaha—held out to win the first race of his 450 career.

“Phoenix is a cool event. Last year was my first time there, since I’d only raced the East Coast before that, but it was fun. The dirt was a challenge. It’s hard-packed and gets really slick on the bottom but also has some loose dirt on top, which makes it tricky. It’s also pretty dang cold since the race is in January. “I won there last year. It was an unreal feeling to get my first 450SX Class victory at only the second round. The whole Main Event went awesome for me. I got the holeshot and led the entire race. The fans were awesome—I could hear them cheering during the whole race.”
’91
In 1991, Jean-Michel Bayle sat second in 450SX points after seven rounds. He had already won three races and was only four points back, but a horrible start in Phoenix didn’t help his title hunt. He came through from the back of the pack, passing rivals including Jeff Stanton, Jeff Ward, Jeff Matiasevich, and Mike Kiedrowski by using the outside berm after the finish to slingshot his way around riders. Bayle’s impressive ride in Phoenix helped him go on to win the championship.

“Anaheim is right in the middle of the mecca of motocross. The stadium holds quite a bit of people, and with it being an open stadium, there’s always the threat of rain. But there’s so much excitement at Anaheim that, rain or shine, you know it’s going to be a good race. The dirt is usually one of two things: rutty and soft or rock-hard. It’s also usually choppy, challenging, and technical. “The fans there love the sport. They get into it, and they never stop cheering. They know about everything, too. They know who’s on what bike, what’s changed during the off-season, everyone’s new numbers, everything. “My best memory from Anaheim would be 2010. I came out of the gate as hard as I could and was able to challenge James Stewart, who was the number-one guy from the previous year. It was the coolest night of my life, and it gave me the confidence to go through that season.”

Jeremy McGrath, the most successful supercross racer in history, took his final win at Anaheim in 2001. Future heir to the throne Ricky Carmichael was all over McGrath, but The King held him off in a thrilling victory that would end up being his last. His record stands at an astonishing seventy-two career supercross wins.

“The Oakland SX is a really cool Monster Energy Supercross for me. I really enjoy the massive stadium, and the dirt is always really moist because of the damp weather. I haven’t had the best of luck at that particular stop on the schedule, but I hope to turn that around this year. I’ve definitely had some good speed there, but I just haven’t been able to get a win yet. “The fans are awesome In Oakland too. They have a lot of energy, and the crowd always seems really excited about the sport. When you’re going down the tunnel to line up for the heat races, the noise is just unreal. It really pumps me up to go racing.”

In 1979, Kawasaki’s Jimmy “The Jammer” Weinert used a paddle tire to pilot his Kawasaki over an extremely sandy track in Oakland. Weinert won the race, prompting the AMA to immediately ban the use of paddle tires in competition (due in part to the danger of rocks and roost).

“Anaheim is always good. I like the stadium, and I had my first supercross race there, so it has a lot of meaning for me. I actually went there in 2008 and watched my first supercross race there too. And the fans at Anaheim are always great. It’s in Southern California and everyone likes dirt bikes down there, so that definitely makes it special. It’s always packed and the fans just go crazy. “My best memory of Anaheim comes from Anaheim 3 from last year; it was the first time I won a supercross race in that stadium. In a few years every single stadium will have some kind of special memory for me, but right now that’s definitely one of the best.”

David Bailey and Ricky Johnson had the battle of a lifetime at Anaheim in 1986. Bailey was at the height of his career while Johnson was eager to prove his worth; over the course of the race, the two exchanged the lead regularly, each nearly crashing several times. Bailey would win, celebrating with a one-hander over the finish. It’s still considered one of the greatest supercross races of all time.

“San Diego is definitely a crucial stop on the Monster Energy Supercross schedule. It’s the last of the California races, and if you leave San Diego healthy and competitive, you’re in a good spot to go for the championship. They tend to have big whoops there, too, and that can really separate the guys. San Diego takes place in the month of February, and with it being an open stadium, there’s always a chance of rain there, which has the potential to make things interesting.”

David Vuillemin is known as a talented supercross racer who won many races—and nearly a Western Regional 125 Supercross Championship in 1998—but his first race win came in 2000 in San Diego. The Frenchman shot out to the early lead and rode unchallenged for the victory.

“I think everyone would agree it’s one of the coolest stadiums we go to. It’s amazing. The dirt is consistently hard-packed every year, almost like Vegas. Because the dirt is so hard, the whoops don’t get broken down as much. And they don’t need to do as much track maintenance, because you don’t have to worry about the ruts. Since they don’t groom the track as much, the whoops stay big all night long. “By the Main Event, the rear tire is a big concern. You’re slamming the tire onto these big whoops, and because it’s so hard and slick, the tire is spinning. It’s like doing a burnout, and if you multiply that by twenty laps, it’s like you did five minutes of burnouts. Obviously, a tire would be done if you do that. They’ve come a long way with tires and making them soft enough to hook up on a hard track like this and still last through the whole race.”
’95
Many fans remember Doug Henry as the man who overcame a broken back to log the first fourstroke supercross win in history, ushering in a new era of race technology. But before all that it was the Dallas Supercross, then held in Irving, that launched him to his winning ways in the premier class. His first win came here in 1995.

“Atlanta is probably the biggest race on the East Coast. It has good dirt, and people come from all over. Even some hardcore fans from the West make it! The fans are always going 100 percent out there. I have a lot of family in the area, too, so it’s kind of a homecoming for me. You always want to do well, but at races like this where the energy from the crowd is so high, all you want to do is put on a good show. “Thankfully, I’ve won a few times there, but last year’s win was pretty special. We struggled for most of the year, and after the knee injury at A1, we thought all the hard work in the off-season was lost. But we kept working and pulled out a victory. It was one of the best wins, not because of the action on track, but because we worked through a lot to get it there.”
’77
Georgia saw a lot of supercross firsts in 1977. It was the first year for the sport in the state— the race was then held in Fulton County Stadium—and the first supercross win for Yamaha’s Bob Hannah, who would go on to win the title that year, as well as the next two in ‘78 and ‘79.

On the last lap of the race last year I was doing my best to try to catch Wharton and I could hear the fans all of a sudden just start screaming. I knew something had just happened, then I saw Wharton on the ground and I passed him for the win. It made me realize that the fans weren’t just watching the race, they were participating in it. In 2008, Chad Reed held the points lead all season over Kevin Windham. Things took a nasty turn for Reed in Detroit, however, when he hurt his shoulder during afternoon practice. After a trip to the hospital, Reed somehow made it back in time for the night show and gutted out a twelfth-place finish with a broken shoulder. The remarkable performance was enough to hold off Windham and help Reed earn his second Monster Energy Supercross Championship.

The old Silverdome was huge, and there wasn’t ever a seat left in the house. “The area for Ford Field is obviously different than the suburbs of Pontiac, but that part of downtown has been revamped and cleaned up. I’m obviously excited about going back there and racing in front of my friends and family again. “Last time we raced at Ford Field, the dirt was a little bit soft. Obviously, when you go to the Midwest during that time of year, the dirt is going to be a little wet. The track layout is going to be unique this year, and along with that dirt, it’s going to be challenging and technical.”

THREE TIMES FOUR For the fourth year in a row, Dunlop has made a clean sweep of all three AMA Supercross championships. That remarkable achievement brings Dunlop’s total to more than 125 national championships in the dirt. Better yet, the same Geomax® tires that have won so many pro races these past years are available to all off-road riders. Because the same design advances and knowledge we put into these championship-winning tires for pro racers also go into the tires we supply to weekend riders. So here’s a big thanks to Ryan Villopoto, Wil Hahn and Ken Roczen for riding Dunlop Geomax tires into the record books.

“I really like the Toronto round. It’s a little on the chilly side compared to a lot of other races, but the fans don’t mind; they come ready for racing! The dirt is always a bit rocky and soft, but the stadium has a huge floor, and with all that extra space they’re able to make it one of the toughest stops of the year. “I really like the fans there. It seems like they’re always so excited about watching supercross. Racing there has been good for me. The two times I’ve been there, we’ve been able to land on the podium, and hopefully I can keep that going this year.”

“St. Louis has some of the best dirt we race on. It’s a lot like Indianapolis; it’s dark, soft, and gets rutted up. It’s not a baseball stadium like out in California, where the corners get awkward sometimes. They can build some long rhythms in the football stadiums, and when you combine that with the ruts, it can get gnarly. But by this point in the season, we 450 guys are usually in the groove, and we’re hitting all of the jumps in the first lap of practice. “That place seems like it’s always pretty full. The pits there are really cool—it’s big enough to have all the semis and pits in there and big enough to get a big crowd, but people still have room to walk around.”
’96
Jeremy McGrath had already clinched the championship going into the 1996 St. Louis round, having won every race in the season up to that point. His thirteen-race win streak ended that night at the hands of Factory Kawasaki’s Jeff Emig, the only rider to beat him that season.

“Houston is extra special for me, but I think for all the riders it’s a fun race to go to. The obstacles are normally bigger and the dirt is really good. And the fans are great—there are lots from my area in Louisiana and from East Texas. There’s great energy from the local shops, the restaurants, the Holiday Inn next door, and especially inside the building. It was exciting for me, but I think all the riders like racing in a place with great dirt, big jumps, and a lot of fans. “A lot of the stadiums have grown tremendously. It’s funny to think how amazing the old Astrodome was, and now halfway across the parking lot there’s this new stadium that’s so much bigger. The bright lights and big stadium are nice, but what really makes it is what fills it—and that’s a big crowd that makes a lot of noise. Houston has always been good for that.”
’08
The Houston Supercross is about as close to a hometown race as it gets for Kevin Windham, and he always had a huge contingent of fans there. In 2008, riders were able to help design the Monster Energy Supercross tracks. Windham designed the Houston track and rode a fantastic race to take the win that night.

“Going into Seattle, you know it’s going to be cold and rainy. If the sun is shining and it’s warm, you’re loving it, but realistically you have to be ready to ride a mudder. Some people don’t like that part of it, but it’s part of it. And there have been some awesome races out there in the mud, so that’s fine. “The fans are serious out there, because even if it is freezing and there’s rain everywhere, they still come out. It’s pretty awesome. Sometimes you see the stadium with the open roof and you’re like, ‘Man, if it rains, we’re all getting wet.’ But it’s all good because the fans want to see some racing! It’s a challenge that’s a little bit different from the rest of the year, so that’s cool. We go after the challenges and see what we can do, and I’m looking forward to this year’s race.”
’80
In 1980, the season started with a doubleheader in Seattle. Mike “Too Tall” Bell started his year the right way, winning both races on his way to a total of seven wins and the championship.

“I think it’s huge to go to a big city—it’s huge not only for the riders but for the whole sport in general. And I’m a football fan, so I know that stadium—the Giants and Jets have already played some big games there—and then with the Super Bowl coming, it’s going to be really exciting to be able to race there. “I live on the East Coast now, so it’s always good to have an opportunity to race in the area. It’s not super close, but fans here don’t mind the road trip. Usually we’re just in and out, but a place like New York, I think you need to come in early or stay a day late. “Like most of the races on the East Coast, I believe the dirt will be really good. I hope the weather holds up, but either way it doesn’t really matter. This race is going to have a great atmosphere no matter what.”
’88
It’s not often that a single team is able to sweep all three spots on the podium in a premier-class race, but that’s exactly what Honda did at Giants Stadium at the Meadowlands in 1988. Ricky Johnson took the win, followed by George Holland in second; Jeff Leisk rounded out the podium.

In 1992, Damon Bradshaw found himself closing in on the premier-class supercross title. But in Sam Boyd Stadium, the train came off the tracks when Bradshaw came together with rival Jeff Matiasevich and went down in his heat race. Bradshaw was infuriated, and his anger boiled over into the main when he came up behind Matiasevich, jumped out of an inside berm, and deliberately T-boned Matiasevich, who was railing the outside. Bradshaw finished ninth and eventually lost the title (Vegas wasn’t the finale that year) to Jeff Stanton by a mere three points.

“The final race is always really exciting because the points are on the line, and the track builders leave nothing on the table. I don’t think they’re afraid of anything! The stadium is smaller than the typical floor, so the track is tighter, but then it loops outside the stadium, so it goes faster out there. That makes bike setup harder, especially gearing and suspension. You really notice the longer lap times; it’s very physical. “It’s in the desert, so the hard-pack dirt isn’t the best in the series, but the last few years they’ve watered it well and it’s worked out pretty good. It’s really good considering what they have to work with. The atmosphere is good because of all the fans in the pits, and of course Las Vegas is always crazy. I’m not a gambler, though!”

LAS VEGAS FINALE As with most things associated with Las Vegas, the track is huge and impressive. The design extends outside the stadium, adding a high-speed wrinkle that’s a big hit with the fans. When riders reenter Sam Boyd Stadium, their fire-breathing 450s push the absolute limits coming down the famous Thunder Alley. In addition to the racing action, the Monster Energy Pit Party rocks all afternoon in Vegas and offers fans the opportunity to get insight on their favorite supercross stars. Plenty of cool demonstrations take place too, including drifting, freestyle MX, BMX, trials, and even live music. Of course, what would a trip to Las Vegas be without a visit to the official hotel of the the Las Vegas Monster Energy Supercross Finals—the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino? There’s no better place to rub shoulders with your favorite riders than the Hard Rock. Having a great time, seeing the stars of supercross, and taking in the sights of Las Vegas … that’s what it’s all about!

M
ark the date: May 3, 2014, is when Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, returns to Las Vegas for the final event of this year’s campaign. Being the last chance for riders to score championship points, the racing is always exciting in the Nevada desert. Three riders will be crowned in Vegas as months of hard work pay dividends for the best of the best. The premier 450SX Class Championship will be up for grabs, as will the Eastern Regional and Western Regional 250SX Class titles. Adding prestige to the event is the annual Dave Coombs Sr. East-West Shootout, where the best 250SX Class riders from each region meet to battle for bragging rights—not to mention big bonuses from teams and sponsors. This is always one of the most anticipated races of the year.

T
hink you’re pretty good on a bike? Dream of being a superstar in Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship? While you’re dreaming, the competition is out riding and improving— but now there are real training grounds to help riders perfect the skills to succeed in the stadiums. AMSOIL Arenacross, featuring Ricky Carmichael’s Road to Supercross, is helping groom the future stars of Monster Energy Supercross. The AMSOIL Arenacross schedule kicks off in January and runs through the last weekend in March. While proven stars like Tyler Bowers and Zach Ames will fight for the AMSOIL Arenacross Championship, tomorrow’s supercross stars will also be on the gates. The Road to Supercross program requires that amateur riders race at least three different weekends of AMSOIL Arenacross before they are granted permission to enter Monster Energy Supercross. That means you’ll see the fastest amateur riders in America cut their teeth at select arenacross races this year before they try the big stadiums in 2015. It’s all the idea of five-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion Ricky Carmichael.
“I was extremely successful as an amateur, and even with all of my off-season testing with Pro Circuit for supercross, I felt like a fish out of water at my first pro race in Indianapolis,” Carmichael explains. “It’s just different, and I don’t care how much testing you do, nothing can simulate being out there in a supercross. The closest we can get is AMSOIL Arenacross. You’re just so nervous out there—there’s a lot of hype, and it’s so tight. You get that out of the way at an arenacross. And that’s extreme—it’s even tighter than a supercross. Get that out of the way and you’re ready to go.” Carmichael finished his pro career on top, winning the Monster Energy Supercross Championship in his final full season in 2006. After retiring, he promised to give back to the sport that made him a star, and this grassroots system is a perfect example. AMSOIL Arenacross introduces riders to all the elements of supercross on a smaller scale. The tracks feature standard obstacles like whoops and jumps, passing requires a deft combination of patience and aggression, and the riders race under the lights in front of thousands of fans. Those elements add a tension and competitiveness you just can’t simulate on a practice track. For more info on AMSOIL Arenacross and Ricky Carmichael’s Road To Supercross, head to www.arenacross.com.

n 2013, after a five-year hiatus, the KTM Jr. Supercross Challenge (KJSC) returned to select stadiums of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship. It turned out to be such a resounding success that Monster Energy Supercross and KTM have teamed up to bring the special event to even more venues in 2014. Taking place during intermission of the evening program, the KJSC is an exhibition race in which fifteen local kids compete on identical KTM 50 SXS motorcycles. For the kids, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime as they learn what it’s like to be a factory rider. In addition to racing in the three-lap event, they get to walk the track, ride in two afternoon practice sessions, sign autographs for fans, meet their favorite riders, and even take part in opening-ceremony introductions. The KJSC has hosted many riders who have gone on to become top-level pros, including Ryan Dungey, Blake Baggett, Eli Tomac, Cole Seely, and Mike Alessi. The event is particularly memorable for Dungey, who finished third that night in 1997. When he was interviewed on the podium afterward, he was asked if he’d rather shake Jeremy McGrath’s hand or get a kiss from Miss Supercross. After choosing to shake McGrath’s hand, Dungey was asked who his favorite supercross racer was, to which he promptly responded, “Myself!” “Racing the KJSC was a highlight,” Dungey says of that night, “and it’s something that I remember and still look back on.” Over fourteen years, the KJSX has provided nearly 3,000 kids the opportunity to race on a real supercross track in front of a packed stadium. “We are honored to be part of this extraordinary program that benefits the younger, upand-coming generations of riders,” Feld Motor Sports Director of Supercross Dave Prater says. “Following last
year’s relaunch of the KJSC, we experienced a tremendous amount of support from the industry and fans alike. It’s a delight to promote motorcycling as a family activity through this exciting program, which is truly a compelling addition to our lineup.” For more information on getting your 7- or 8-year-old signed up for the KJSC, visit www.ktmjrsx.com.

ianna Dahlgren is back as Miss Supercross 2014, having been a big part of the series for a few years now. During the course of the night, expect to see the beautiful 23-year-old from Temecula, California, mingling with fans, conducting interviews, and generally entertaining the crowd. The Party in the Pits and her duties as Miss Supercross keep her busy, but she still finds the time to talk with kids and fans during the day. For those looking for even more from Dianna, check out her column, Miss SX, over at SupercrossOnline.com, the official website for Monster Energy Supercross, an FIM World Championship. Also on the website you’ll find her wildly popular SX Ed with Miss Supercross episodes, where she often incorporates many of the sport’s star riders, adding a humorous touch that shows their personalities away from the track. Entering her fourth year with the title of Miss Supercross, Dianna has done a great job connecting with fans and is a true ambassador for the sport we all love. If you happen to see her wandering around this season (and she’s hard to miss), be sure to say hello!

or most race fans, the long, cruel autumn/winter period known as the off-season can push you to the brink. The Monster Energy Cup is here to help. Scheduled right in the middle of the off-season and held at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium, the prestigious oneoff race features the world’s best racers competing for a chance to win the big prize—a cool $1 million. In addition to racing for the Monster Million, riders also face a three-race format and unique obstacles including a split-start, the spectator-adjacent AMSOIL Arch section, and the now infamous Joker Lane, a slower detour that riders must take once per race. The Joker Lane in particular added to the drama in 2013 when both Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto forgot to go through, completely turning races one and two upside down. A long and superb battle between Villopoto and eventual winner James Stewart also added to a memorable night of racing. And there’s just as much action off the track. All afternoon, the pits and surrounding parking lots are buzzing with activity as fans get to meet their favorite riders and enjoy outrageous motorsports exhibitions, including drifting, FMX, street-bike stunting, and a bestwhip competition. It’s the perfect cure for the off-season blues. For information on the 2014 Monster Energy Cup, or to purchase tickets, visit www.monsterenergycup.com.

n Monster Energy Supercross, a top-notch mechanic can be the difference between victory and defeat. Responsible for making sure the motorcycle performs at the highest level, they’re also relied on to keep their riders safe from mechanical failure. The Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) has been an instrumental tool in the careers of many of today’s factory mechanics. To increase their involvement even more, MMI gives out a weekly award to a deserving technician at each round of the series. The MMI Top Tech Award recognizes a mechanic who has overcome some form of adversity during race day—a big crash that required an unexpected rebuild, for example, or some other unforeseen circumstance that required a clutch performance to get the rider to the gate. MMI also awards $1,500 to the Monster Energy 450SX Class Supercross Champion’s mechanic, and another $1,000 to both the Western and Eastern Regional 250SX Champions’ mechanics.

ny mechanic in the pits at Monster Energy Supercross will tell you that the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) is a great springboard for landing a job on a supercross team. With campuses in Phoenix and Orlando, both West Coast and East Coast residents have the opportunity to learn what it takes to work for the world’s best supercross racers. MMI having played an integral part in educating many of today’s top technicians, Jeremy McGrath has stepped up to present the Jeremy McGrath MMI Scholarship, worth an estimated $20,000. A prize like this just shows how classy the eight-time Monster Energy Supercross Champion has always been. Here’s how to get signed up for a chance at the scholarship: Make a two-minute video explaining why you should win. Remember to be creative, as the competition is stiff. If you can get Jeremy’s attention through humor or originality, your chances will improve. Include your name, the reason you should win, and what you plan to do once you graduate from MMI. Once you’ve made your video, head over to Youtube.com/McGrathScholarship and upload it! Jeremy himself will review the submissions, and the winner will be announced at the final round of Monster Energy Supercross in Las Vegas on May 3, 2014. Good luck!

f you can make it there, you can make it anywhere—and Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, is about to make it happen. For the first time ever, MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets, will be filled with berms, whoops, and jumps as the best dirt bike riders on the planet wreak havoc on the NYC metropolitan area. Supercross visited the old Giants Stadium from 1987 through 1991, but the sport’s explosive growth through the last two decades matches perfectly with this massive, stateof-the-art new stadium. The host site of Superbowl XLVIII in February of 2014, this stadium is no stranger to huge events, but supercross with the Manhattan skyline in the distance will be something to behold. MetLife Stadium sits in northern New Jersey, just minutes from the bridges and tunnels that connect to New York City.

There will be plenty of military-themed activities, and teams and riders will get into the spirit by outfitting their bikes and pits appropriately. “When talking to people about the needs in the military community, I often hear people say, ‘I just didn’t know,’” says Jack Chirrick, executive director of Operation Homefront, California. “Feld Motor Sports has really taken notice and made a commitment to join with us to honor our heroes and their families. Our service members and their families sacrifice so much for us, and we want to be sure that we are there to assist them if they need it.” Join Monster Energy Supercross in supporting Operation Homefront. Visit www.operation homefront.net to learn more about how you can help the organization provide multiple forms of relief, recovery, and recognition for our nation’s greatest heroes.
There are plenty of ways to get from the stadium area to the city, so you can let NYC’s famous transportation do the work while you have all the fun. As this is an open-air building in the Northeast, the race date was pushed all the way back into late April to take advantage of warmer spring temperatures. And with championships potentially hanging in the balance at the season’s penultimate round, there might not be a more exciting event on the schedule!
