The Museum takes its main atmospheric inspiration from M. K. Čiurlionis painting ‘‘Serenity’’. (1) The proposal seeks to bring back the lost link to the water that the city once had. (2) The project is influenced by bold and decorative interwar architectural elements. (3) Ministry of Justice and Parliament, (4) Christ’s Ressurection Church.

The Museum rises from the waters of Kaunas and welcomes all to celebrate the hidden secrets of science. The generous and transparent atrium displays the daily life of the building as part of the museum exhibit. Its iconic shape creates a natural temptation to be there - always bustling with diversity of events, it encourages innovation and creativity, spreads warm and bright energy. The vertical columns, the bold form and the arch trace iconic elements of Kaunas interwar architectural
tradition and condensed entrance hall exposes the beautiful panorama and the special aura of the cape. The external museum display merges with the island and new paths rediscover the lost connection of the city and its shipping history. The Museum strengthens urban exploration and movement using more sustainable means of transport. The National Science Centre becomes a powerful natural landmark, which symbolises the rise of innovation and flourishing public life.

Nemunas island is the only river island in the metropolis of Kaunas and is a natural place for a game changer.
The proposal introduces a new pedestrian bridge that links the island to the city and creates the loop.

Open plan spaces are ideal for significant fluid artistic exhibitions that challenge the traditional boundaries.
Strictly divided spaces are connected via a clear route that wraps around the atrium. It is a scientific and researchbased layout.
The spaces form a sequential route - perfect for storytelling exhibits and interactive displays.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY The building is compact and uses the space, light and energy in most efficient ways. All the spaces are highly flexible and can be used for different purposes at different times. The Museum is an example of sustainability and it is BREEAM “excellent” certification targeted.
MATERIAL CHOICE
SUSTAINABLE LIVING
Kaunas architectural identity radiates boldness and intelligence in natural surroundings of the two largest Lithuanian rivers. Rammed earth panels demonstrate natural layers of Kaunas island and gives awareness of local grounds. Science Museum reviews the secrets of nature.
t
t t t
A mixture of clay, marl, soil and cement helps to maintain a cool internal environment. Earth modules can be prefabricated in a nearby factory by compacting the soil and clay mixture into a formwork. Local materials, such as wood and plaster, are prefered in the interior.
t t
t
A connection to the old town via light and cost-effective pedestrian and bicycle bridge creates diversity of city routes and ensures natural daily use of the Museum and the island. Connection to the south bank reintroduces water transportation. Water activities - open air pool, wooden piers, water bank amphitheatres, ect. promote the forgotten connection between people and the waters of Kaunas. The Science Island becomes an experimental platform for ecological and natural resources to boost awareness of sustainability.
