Bouvier des Flandres makes an excellent watchdog or guardian and is an eager participant in dog sports, especially herding trials. Easily trained and a consummate showman, the breed is happiest when he has a job to do, either working or participating in sports.

Chairman's Report
Greetings to all!
The Breeder Audit scheme situation seems to have stabilised, with the RSPCA having declared that they are not interested in the smaller breeders, unless there is a welfare complaint. This means we can relax somewhat. However, until these Codes of Practice change, we should be very aware that they are sitting in the background.
That said, we should all make efforts to have good records of our animals, even if you commence these records from now. To assist you with getting started, please download the DOGS NSW Record Keeping Information Booklet from DOGS NSW Website: www.dogsnsw.org.au/ breeders/nsw-dpi-audit-information/ (please see under Documents to Assist). As well as having invaluable information, this booklet has editable forms (from pages 56-78) which can get you started. These are available to download as a word document or as a PDF file.
We are advised that that there will be a comprehensive Q&A being released by the DPI to assist in the correct interpretation of the Codes, in the near future, but exactly when, remains unconfirmed. We are hopeful that this should clarify some of the sillier interpretations that have been purported.
The Animal Welfare laws are currently undergoing major reform and part of the resistance to altering the Codes, I believe, is that they will then change the Codes to reflect this new direction of Animal Welfare. These will presumably be directed to a minimum accepted level of care and welfare, rather than just being cruelty based.
This, however, leaves all of us in the unacceptable situation where we continue for the next three years to be bound by these Codes until this process is finalised, without guarantees that we may find ourselves in the unenviable position of being back doing the same thing trying to get amendments to the next set of Codes to accommodate the ‘hobby breeders’.
It is imperative that we have significant input into the development of the Codes and that we continue to lobby our Parliamentarians for this right, with a definition of ‘hobby breeders’ that relieves us of the burden of the enforcement of the Commercial Codes.
Hugh Gent OAM has been very active with Wollondilly Shire Council, which was aggressively moving to requiring DA approvals from many long standing breeders. This situation was cause for deep concern, however, it is now moving in a positive direction in favour of DOGS NSW members. Our thanks go to Hugh and all the people who rallied to assist in this endeavour.

Shows are slowly making a comeback and coverage of one of the year’s favourite events, ‘Take Me to the Beach’ Wollongong shows are featured in this edition. Decked out in their colourful beach gear over two days, 30-31 January, nothing could dampen exhibitors’ enthusiasm for these three shows, except for the heavens opening up late Saturday afternoon and, in particular, on Sunday. Coverage of the three shows commences on page 11.
Valentine’s Day was the theme for the double Complex Fundraising Shows held on Saturday, 13 February and commencing at 6.00pm. General Specials Judge for the Blue Show was Mrs Sue Bownds (NSW) and Mrs Beryl Hession (NSW) judged the White Show. The evening was a great success and coverage commences on page 8.
Coverage of the Library and Archives Show will now be featured in the May edition of the magazine.
There are two news items this month: the first which details Petcloud’s launch of Australia’s first dedicated pet taxi service and, in a first, the new Pet Taxi App, allowing pets to ride unaccompanied. Pet owners who use the Pet Taxi App can rest assured that every driver is insured, trained in animal handling, has undergone a police check, and their pet is properly secured during each trip. The second news story is a feel good article based on a study from the University of South Australia, on the effects that pets and touch have on our lives and why our furry friends have been lifesavers, particularly during COVID lockdowns, social isolation and distancing. The news articles commence on page 20.

Research has shown that slightly less than one-half of all pet owners share their bed or bedroom with their pet. Even so, you have likely been told by at least one well-meaning person that your dog should sleep on the floor, in his crate, or in his own bed. However, according to recent research, there are many benefits to co-sleeping with your dog. To read more, please turn to the article, ‘Should you sleep with your dog?’ on page 22.

Joanne Bibby from Fursafe Emergency Dog First Aid Kits has supplied us with an article on Vehicle Trauma, which includes information on what to do in these circumstances and ways to prevent it occuring. Although beneficial information, hopefully none of us will ever have to use this, with the exception of preventative measures. The article commences on page 25.
This month’s breed feature is the Bouvier des Flandres. The Bouvier is agile, spirited and bold, yet his serene, well behaved disposition denotes his steady, resolute and fearless character. The coat is very abundant, the outercoat forming with the dense undercoat a protective layer, perfectly adapted to the sudden climatic changes in this breed’s native lands of France and Belgium. The Bouvier’s sterling character, huge heart and keen intelligence endear them to dog lovers the world over. A good family dog, the Bouvier likes, and is excellent with children.
Winners of the February ‘Fetchables’ competition were Margaret Fittler, Laraine Frawley, Melanie Kenny, Kath Peatey and Noelle Deshon. Congratulations!

A big thank you from the Committee to all our Judges for donating Marshals excellent), our Show Manager/Chief Steward, Cataloguer Representative. Special thanks to our Photographer Jess Fynmore and Caterer Shirley Donaldson.
We must not forget to thank our Sponsors Royal Canin and Delete for their generous donation of products and a special thanks to AT Ribbons for their Valentine’s Day themed sashes and rosettes.
Special mention must go to DOGS NSW groundsmen for their excellent preparation of the grounds and set up of the Show rings for judging. The rings were in fantastic condition!
This is the first time this Committee has come together as a group to run shows, as we have only met previously through Zoom meetings. To our hard-working committee must go special thanks, as these members donate their valuable time, prior to, during and after the show. During these shows they ran raffles, lucky exhibit prizes, delivered the sponsors’ product to all the 14 rings and helped run the shows. Well done to the Committee ...I am proud to be a part of it.
A part of the mission statement for this Committee is to help improve facilities at the Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs (Orchard Hills) by running Shows and we are now on our way to achieving this.

‘Take me to the Beach’ Shows
Wollongong & District Kennel Club 30-31 January 2021
The Wollongong and District Kennel Club ‘Take Me To The Beach’ summer shows, are known for the sun, sand and surf. Located at the Shamrocks Rugby Union ground, Woonona, the shows are a mere 30 metres from the beach.

2021 was a challenge! Our fantastic interstate panel were locked out, so a second panel of excellent judges had to be found at short notice. A COVID drive-through testing station was located in the grounds carpark and the local council put on some strict conditions, with which we needed to comply. The Committee rose to the challenge, as did all our officials and exhibitors.
Our theme of beachwear for exhibitors, Judges and Officials saw boardshorts, loud floral shirts, hats and sunnies being the approved attire! Competition for best dressed was hot and it was great to see so many exhibitors and Judges get into the theme. The result was a relaxed fun weekend with lots of laughs and exhibitors enjoying the beach with their favourite pooches. We experienced all weather conditions; cloud, drizzle, sun and a thunderstorm, but everyone had a great time.
The entry, of over 700 on Saturday, proved that exhibitors love the regional venues. Our panel of Judges were well received and commented on the great atmosphere in and around the judging rings. A special thank you to Linda Stevens, Linda Buckley, Jim and Lyndal Black, Vicki Harris, Karen Paul, Helen Beasley and Robert Lucas for drawing a great entry and for stepping in late notice.
Our Stewards made sure that the rings ran smoothly, ably led by Lyn Cook. Bill McLean was, as usual, our raffle king and the Club will be donating over $500 to the Cancer Council, our Club Charity.
The Sunday was best dressed dog and owner day and, as expected, the competition was strong. The winners were decided by the Shamrocks Committee members with Johnny Mills taking out 1st place with his complete pineapple outfit and his French banana on the end of the lead.

The licenced bar was again a feature with alfresco seating, with the Shamrocks Club members cooking their usual mean barbeque and throwing in some friendly banter for free. With a walk and bike track next to the ground, the shows are always a drawcard for the general public.
The Club would like to thank all the exhibitors who answered questions and chatted to the families who came to the show looking at the different breeds for their next family pet. Additionally, there were a number of new exhibitors who are keen to get to more shows due to the positive experience they received from other exhibitors. Well done!
Our photographer, Barbara Killworth took some great photos of In Show and Group winners over the weekend. Thanks must also go to our vendors for the weekend, Show Aquipment and It Suits Me. A final thank you to the Shamrocks Rugby Union Club. Without their support and the great venue, the Wollongong & District Kennel Club ‘Take Me To The Beach’ Shows would not be the success that they

2. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
The President reported to the meeting as follows:-
As my first year of being President, I have to call it as the Queen once did, an Annus Horribilis. It was a year starting with droughts followed by months of fires, then floods and finally pandemics. While I am not an overly religious person, it has been a year of biblical proportions!
Late last year we saw the tail end of the drought followed by months of fires coming down from the north and eventually going all the way down to Victoria. Many of the later fires were coastal, while earlier fires were more inland on both sides of the Blue Mountains, and a total of over 5 million hectares in NSW alone was burn out.
Thirteen (13) DOGS NSW members had their homes burnt down while many more were lucky to escape with more minor damage to fences and sheds, due to the great service from the rural firefighters. Although, thankfully, no one lost their lives, unfortunately, a few dogs were lost in areas where the fires were moving extremely rapidly.
The RNSWCC Health & Welfare Charity Ltd was able to assist with some immediate funds for those that were burnt out as well as assisting with dog bedding and dog food supplies. Royal Canin was very generous with several large donations of dog food, which was dispersed into several collection areas throughout the State. Senior Vice President, Lyn Brown, with her husband on one trip, and our Operations Manager, Anthony Khamis, on another trip, managed to move supplies out west, as well as down south - their efforts were truly appreciated.
Annual General Meeting Minutes
No sooner than the worst of the fires eased off, the opposite problem arose – flooding. At least this stopped the last of the fires, but as the ground was so dry there was lots of run off and flooding occurred very rapidly. Luckily there were very few members seriously affected by this event. This occurred in early to mid-February. The flood effects on DOGS NSW grounds were quite severe with the majority of the internal and external fences being totally destroyed. Luckily the sheep had been sold in December, due to lack of feed from the drought, or else they would not have survived the flood event.
Barely a month later came the initial COVID-19 lockdown on 12 March 2020. This was the “official” start of the Pandemic. We were all locked down for 6 weeks, with dog shows and events halted immediately. Dog people, in pursuing their hobby, moving from place to place, sometimes doing 2-3 shows per weekend, are the ideal vectors for spreading disease, particularly viral respiratory diseases. Added to that, the average age of our members places large numbers of us in the “vulnerable category”, ie, the odds of those who do catch the virus and subsequently dying from it is quite high.
Since that time, the NSW Health Department had managed to stabilise the COVID situation several times and we were getting hopeful of returning to shows when “WHAM”, in late July, Victoria exploded into a second wave. NSW just missed getting a second lockdown. I highly commend the NSW Health Department’s tracking teams for the excellent level of control we have managed to achieve in this State.
At time of writing (late August), the situation appears to be stable, so we will once again try and venture out to Shows and other events. These will be of a slightly different format for the foreseeable future, particularly for All Breeds Shows where Group starting times may need to be staggered.
On the political side, there have been several developments that affect DOGS NSW. The major one is finally getting the lease extension on the DOGS NSW grounds from the Government. The lease has been extended by 20 years to 2058 and the amount of land we have been able to retain is quite large with the added ability to share a few areas when needed. Many thanks to Senior Vice President, Lynette Brown, and the Media & Government Legislation Committee, in particular Brian Crump, for all their hard work to push this through. Further, the Government has agreed to set up the external fences (dog proof) around the new boundaries. Hopefully, this may well have started by the time of this meeting.
The Animal Welfare Laws review is still ongoing. This is reviewing POCTA as well as the Exhibition and Research of Animals Acts and trying to combine them with similar basic ethics towards establishing a minimal standard of care as the basis across all 3 Acts. This is a slight turn around but a more sensible way to look at welfare, where previously it was punitive based.
DOGS NSW has put in a submission to this Review which included the need for an Ombudsman to be used where there are issues with the Welfare agencies, rather than the current situation of no avenue for redress. This motion has already been accepted and we are looking forward to further input into developing the Codes of Practice for the Breeding of Dogs and Cats. The Government Working Party has been actively involving us (and listening!) at the various stages of this review.
Furthermore, the Government has been assisting with various payments to cover the COVID lock down, sufficiently that we have survived the crisis still in a reasonably good financial position. Chair of the Finance Committee, Senior Vice President, Lynette Brown, will cover this much more extensively in her financial report. I commend all her efforts in tirelessly managing limited funds and looking at the long term financial stability of the Company.
The Board has approved various improvements across the grounds which include the replacement of damaged ring covers, new lawn mower, new computers replacing old IT equipment that was over nine (9) years old - again these will be discussed in the Senior Vice President’s financial report.
The Office
The Office has been working extremely well, even through the difficult COVID situation. All of the staff worked part time in the initial lockdown and we are now back to reasonably normal conditions although still on reduced hours. The majority of the work with registrations, etc, can be done online. The Reception has been closed during those times when the COVID risk was high. There are a few members that are not comfortable using technology to conduct business and prefer to deal directly with the Office staff. This can be done when the COVID situation is stable.
I would like to thank both the Company Secretary, Virginia Gagan-Wilson, and the Operations Manager, Anthony Khamis, very much for their support throughout the year for the “Rookie President”. They have made the job much easier, with all the many ins and outs of dealing with the effective running of DOGS NSW. They are both very competent individuals who dovetail their activities fairly seamlessly. The Office is working well and is now a very productive atmosphere. I thank all the hardworking Staff members who are always very cheerful and helpful to the members. DOGS NSW has the fastest turn around for registrations in the country which has been at zero days for almost 24 months, ie, applications received in the morning are processed and sent out the same day in most cases. Congratulations to all!
Library and Archives
The Research & Education Centre continues to be given some wonderful books and canine objects that are irreplaceable. Members should take the time to look through the Library building once shows recommence. Director Nancy Keck and her hardworking Committee have been cataloguing and arranging the objects and it looks amazing. Many thanks for all their hard work.
Conformation Judges Education Program
Despite all the troubles during the year with disrupted lectures, shows, etc, the Conformation Judges Training Committee and CJEP Examinations Committee managed to get through the required lectures and examinations. The vast majority of the Candidates (well over 70%) passed – Congratulations to those people. The practical side of the course has had to be delayed until February 2021, to allow fields nights, critique writing and the practical judging requirements to be completed. Many thanks for the hard work of Directors Russell Britten, John Shepherd and all the Group Co-ordinators for getting through this difficult time successfully.
ANKC Ltd
We are still trying to get the National Business System up and running. It has finally been passed, in principal, but many of the finer points still need to be sorted. This will result in a much improved online and technology experience for our Members.
RFG – the Respiratory Function Grading System developed by Cambridge University has just been accepted by the ANKC. The exact points of how this will work and the training of Assessors, etc, is still being sorted out in conjunction with The Kennel Club and Ms Jane Ladlow, The Kennel Club’s Chief Assessor. We are also conferring with the New Zealand Kennel Club who has also accepted the System to see what teething issues there might be. This has been accepted by quite a few countries and is backed by the FCI. Initially, this will be for French and British Bulldogs as well as Pugs. Other Brachycephalic breeds will be looked at to be included over time.
The Board of Directors
In closing, may I thank the Board for all its help and support in a very difficult year. We have weathered the disasters and pandemic and still came out in a good state. Much of this good management is as a result of the strong background work done by the previous President. I inherited a financially strong Company and well balanced and well run Office which, together with a hard working Board, has seen us come through successfully in these unprecedented times.

Bouvier des Flandres
History
The monks at the Ter Duinen monastery in Flanders were among the earliest known breeders of Flanders. The Bouviers bred by them are recorded as having been bred from imports such as Irish Wolfhounds and Scottish Deerhounds with local farm dogs, until a breed considered to be the predecessor of the modern Bouvier des Flandres was obtained. This became a working dog able to perform tirelessly, herding and guarding cattle and even pulling cargo carts, thanks to its strength and temperament, and to withstand the local weather conditions due to its thick coat. 2. 3.
Bouvier des Flandres roughly translates as “cowherd of flanders.” In the breed’s formative years, it was called “vuilbaard” (“dirty beard”, “koehond” (“cow dog”) and “toucher de boeuf of pic” (“cattle driver”) apt descriptions of this majestic herder. 4.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221006235906-3e80bd47b2801e46914af4ab16e9dd43/v1/390bf20817d9e4aa5149ee26a3d59f19.jpeg)
In medieval times, when the Bouvier was first conceived, Flanders was a principality encompassing parts of modern-day France, Belgium and The Netherlands. (To this day, both France and Belgium claim the Bouvier as a native breed). As the breed’s many early names suggest, moving cattle was the Bouvier’s primary occupation. But the thrifty farmers of France and the Low Countries preferred owning one versatile dog instead of a team of specialists, so Bouviers earned their keep as herders, watch dogs, guardians and cart-pullers. 4.
By the turn of the 20th century, Bouviers were attracting the attention of international dog fanciers far from the farms and pastures of Flanders. A Belgian breed club was formed and French and Belgian experts drew up a written standard. With the outbreak of World War 1, however, the Bouvier’s bucolic homeland became a nightmarish battlefield, where the region’s farmers were displaced and their dogs lost or destroyed. 4.
The Belgian Army was responsible for keeping the breed alive, and Bouviers distinguished themselves as courageous and resourceful dogs of war. In peacetime, Bouviers burnished their resume as European police K-9s and guide dogs for the blind. 4.
Nowadays, the Bouvier des Flandres is above all used as a guard dog for the estate and the farm, and as a defence and police dog. Its physical and behavioural aptitudes, its great qualities of scent, initiative and intelligence warrant its use as a tracking dog, a messenger dog and a gamekeeper’s dog. 1.

Appearance
The Bouvier des Flandres is a powerfully built, compact, short-coupled, rough coated dog of notably rugged appearance. He gives the impression of great strength without any sign of heaviness or clumsiness in his overall makeup. He is agile, spirited and bold, yet his serene, well behaved disposition denotes his steady, resolute and fearless character. His gaze is alert and brilliant, depicting his intelligence, vigour and daring. By nature he is an equable dog. 4.
The coat is very abundant, the outercoat forming with the dense undercoat a protective layer perfectly adapted to the sudden climatic changes in this breed’s native land. The hair must be coarse to the touch, dry and matt, neither too long nor too short (about 6 cm), slightly tousled but never woolly or curly. Shorter on the head and very short on the outside of the ears. The undercoat is padding made up of fine dense hair, which grows beneath the outer coat and together with the topcoat it forms a waterproof covering. 1

“The Bouvier’s sterling character, huge heart and keen intelligence endear them to dog lovers the world over.” - AKC
Appearance (continued)
Colours are usually grey, brindle or overlaid with black. A completely uniform black is also accepted without being favoured. Light coloured, so-called washed-out coats are not acceptable. A white star on the chest is tolerated.1.
Sizes: 62-68 cm for males, 59-65 cm for females. For both sexes the ideal size is the middle range, ie 65cm for males, 62 cm for females.1.
Temperament
The Bouvier des Flandres has the calm, thoughtful character of a sensible, but fearless dog. Its lively look indicates intelligence, energy and audacity. 1
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221006235906-3e80bd47b2801e46914af4ab16e9dd43/v1/39d8f2710975864ecc9b6a7c2bc6e968.jpeg)
Bouviers should be socialised well, preferably starting at an early age, to avoid shyness, suspiciousness, and being overly reserved with strangers (although the breed is naturally aloof with strangers). Protection of the family when danger is present is not something that needs to be taught, nor is it something one can train out of them. The dog will rise to the occasion if needed. A good family dog, the Bouvier likes, and is excellent with, children. The Bouvier is very adaptable and goes about its business quietly and calmly. Obedience training starts when they are young. Their behaviour depends on the owner’s ability to communicate what is expected, and on the individual dominance level of the dog. They are usually good with other dogs if they are raised with them from puppyhood. Slow to mature both in body and mind, the Bouvier does not fully mature until the age of 2–3 years. 2
Sizes: Height at withers: 62-68 cm for males; 59-65 cm for females. For both sexes the ideal size is the middle range, ie 65cm for males, 62 cm for females. 1.
Weight: Approximately 35-40 kg for males; 27-35 kg for females. 1
Suitability
Their sterling character, huge heart, and keen intelligence endear them to dog lovers the world over. Bouviers are excellent watchdogs and guardians, and eager participants in dog sports, especially herding trials. 4.
The Bouvier is happiest when he has a job to do, whether that job is babysitting, herding, obedience, or guard dog or rescue work. A bored Bouvier can be a very destructive one. Bouviers are easily trained to do almost any type of dog sport or activity, and they usually excel at it. They have a strong prey drive, so should be well socialised from the start. They are consummate showmen and enjoy working or competing with their owner at their side. They are an excellent fit for an active household with an owner who hikes or jogs or even bikes.
The Bouvier needs a large, enclosed exercise area where he can romp and play, preferably with other dogs or kids who will keep him in good condition both mentally and physically. Heavy exercise should be limited while he is a growing puppy.
The Bouvier’s coat needs brushing once or twice a week. A good slicker brush or pin brush and large comb will work for this. The beard may need cleaning at the same time, and the dog’s toenails should be trimmed every week or two.

PetCloud Launches Australia's First Pet Taxi App

Australian startup PetCloud has launched the nation’s first dedicated pet taxi service and, in a first for Australia, the new Pet Taxi App allows pets to ride unaccompanied.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221006235906-3e80bd47b2801e46914af4ab16e9dd43/v1/8ae12e048d0f6fd9538656ce927cb07e.jpeg)
Whether they’re arranging a taxi to a grooming appointment, vet check-up, or a lift home from a wedding, pet owners who use the Pet Taxi App can rest assured that every driver is insured, trained in animal handling, has undergone a police-check and their pet is properly secured during each trip.
Like other ride share services, users simply download the app and book a pet taxi on demand or schedule a pick-up, up to 72 hours in advance. Pet owners can track their pet’s ride in real time through the app’s GPS system and get fare estimates before they book. Pet businesses such as vet clinics and grooming salons can also book pet taxis on behalf of their clients.
With pets in two-thirds of Australian households, PetCloud CEO Deb Morrison said it was about time they had their own ride share service.
“There are more pets than people in Australia with last estimates at around 30 million, which adds up to a lot of pet health and grooming appointments. Whether a pet needs a ride home from a mid-morning grooming appointment or a ride to the vet for a dental check-up, pet owners can’t always stop half-way through their workday to pick up their pets, and we know that not all pet owners have a car. PetCloud’s mission has always been to remove barriers to pet ownership and make responsible pet care easy and we are proud to say we have found a new way to do this through our Pet Taxi App,” Ms Morrison said.
While PetCloud has been offering pet taxis through its pet sitting platform for a couple of years, Ms Morrison said increased interest in the service, especially among Australia’s growing aging population, showed the nation was ready for its first dedicated pet taxi service.
“Pets bring so much joy and comfort to people’s lives and we don’t want anyone to miss out on that special relationship because they can’t drive or have a busy job. By offering a pet taxi service we’re paving the way for more Australians to be able to care for a pet regardless of their life situation,” she said.
“We already have more than 1100 pet-loving drivers across Australia gearing up to drive Miss Daisy to her next appointment and welcome anyone else looking to make some spare cash as a pet taxi driver.”
In line with PetCloud’s regulations, Pet Taxi App drivers have all had police checks, are trained in animal handling and insured.
The Pet Taxi App is now available to download, pet taxi drivers can sign up and pet businesses can access the pet taxi business portal. For more information on PetCloud visit www.petcloud.com.au

PETS, TOUCH & COVID-19
Why our furry friends are lifesavers
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/221006235906-3e80bd47b2801e46914af4ab16e9dd43/v1/f822539941ad6d598492e6c2189994fc.jpeg)
Lockdowns, job losses and social isolation have been the hallmarks of 2020 as COVID-19 tightens its grip on the world, not only infecting millions and leaving a mounting death toll, but also denying humans the most basic sense touch.
In the absence of human-to-human contact, in millions of households worldwide, animals have stepped into the breach for many people, providing much-needed comfort via cuddles, pats and a constant physical presence.
“Pets seem to be particularly important when people are socially isolated or excluded, providing comfort, companionship and a sense of self-worth,” Dr Young says. “Touch is an understudied sense, but existing evidence indicates it is crucial for growth, development and health, as well as reducing the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the body. It is also thought that touch may be particularly important for older people as other senses decline.”
In interviews with 32 people, more than 90 per cent said touching their pets both comforted and relaxed them and the pets seemed to need it as well. Examples of dogs and cats touching their owners when the latter were distressed, sad, or traumatised were cited. Many people referenced pets’ innate ability to just “know” when their human counterparts weren’t feeling well and to want to get physically close to them.
“The feedback we received was that pets themselves seem to get just as much pleasure from the tactile interaction as humans,” Dr Young says.
Not just dogs and cats either. Interviewees mentioned birds, sheep, horses and even reptiles who reciprocate touch.
“Animals, like people, are living, breathing others, with individual interests, styles and preferences. While culturally, animals are not seen as ‘human’, they are still seen as individuals with likes and dislikes.
A new study published by University of South Australia researchers points to the lifesaving role that pets have played in 2020 and why governments need to sit up and take notice.
The Journal of Behavioural Economics for Policy (JBEP) 1. paper outlines how pets have a crucial role to play in an era where human-human contact can be life endangering. Lead author Dr Janette Young says physical touch is a sense that has been taken for granted, even overlooked, until COVID-19 visited our door earlier this year.
“In a year when human contact has been so limited and people have been deprived of touch, the health impacts on our quality of life have been enormous,” Dr Young says. “To fill the void of loneliness and provide a buffer against stress, there has been a global upsurge in people adopting dogs and cats from animal shelters during lockdowns. Breeders have also been inundated, with demands for puppies quadrupling some waiting lists.”
Spending on pets was already hitting record levels, topping $13 billion in Australia and in the region of US$260 billion globally in 2020, but this is bound to be surpassed. It is estimated that more than half the global population share their lives with one or more pets. The health benefits have been widely reported, but little data exists regarding the specific benefits that pets bring to humans in terms of touch.
“In the era of COVID-19, social distancing, sudden lockdowns and societal upheaval, our pets may be the only living beings that many people are able to touch and draw comfort from.
“Humans have an innate need to connect with others but in the absence of human touch, pets are helping to fill this void. They need to be considered from a policy angle, therefore, to help mitigate some of the mental and physical stressors that people are experiencing during this time.”
Dr Young says hospitals, hospices and aged care facilities should be encouraging pet connections with residents.
“Residential aged care is yet to recognise the value of human-animal relationships. Had more pets being living with their owners in aged care when COVID-19 restrictions were applied, it could have helped people immeasurably,” she says.

Should you sleep with your dog?
For some puppy parents, there’s nothing better than cuddling with their pooches at bedtime. In fact, research shows that nearly 50% of all pet owners report sleeping next to their dogs.
Do you let your dog sleep in your bed with you at night? Research has shown that slightly less than one-half of all pet owners share their bed or bedroom with their pet. Even so, you have likely been told by at least one well-meaning person that your dog should sleep on the floor, in his crate, or in his own bed. However, according to recent research, there are many benefits to co-sleeping with your dog, and there is nothing to be ashamed of. Here are some interesting facts regarding this:
• Humans and dogs have been sleeping together in some cultures for centuries.
• Newborn puppies huddle together because that’s when they feel the safest, and most comfortable it’s in their nature. When your dog wants to sleep beside you, it’s because they consider you ‘part of the pack’.
• Sleeping with your dog can ease anxiety and provide feelings of safety and security. ‘Hard day at the office? When we climb into bed at night, we have a tendency to worry and overthink which results in a not-so-great night’s sleep. Spending time with our dogs, whether it be taking them for a walk, or having them beside us in bed can lower our cortisol levels, which is the hormone our body releases when we’re stressed out. Lower cortisol levels don’t just come with mental health benefits either, physical too! The release of cortisol can also cause heightened blood pressure, which can lead to several complications including; heart attacks, strokes and memory issues.’
• However, dog and human sleep cycles differ and this can affect the quality of sleep.
The journal Human Nature recently published a study by Smith et al. entitled “A Multispecies Approach to Co-Sleeping: Integrating Human-Animal Co-Sleeping Practices into Our Understanding of Human Sleep.”1. The researchers looked at the practice of allowing a dog to sleep in the bed or bedroom, comparing it with adult-child co-sleeping.
The study pointed out that sleeping in the same bed or bedroom as our pets is not just a modern phenomenon. In fact, some traditional cultures considered co-sleeping with animals as beneficial. For example, Aboriginal Australians often slept beside their dogs and/or dingoes for warmth and protection from evil spirits. Unfortunately, modern culture tends to focus on the negative aspects of co-sleeping rather than the benefits.
It’s true there are some health concerns related to co-sleeping with your dog. Human allergies can be aggravated, for example. There is also the risk of transmission of disease, from both the dog to the human and the human to the dog. However, such transmission is rare.
Quality of sleep can also be affected. Previous studies have shown that owners sharing a bed with their pet report greater sleep disturbances than people whose pets did not sleep in their bed. One factor that may explain this difference is that dogs are polyphasic sleepers and average three sleep/wake cycles per night time hour, whereas humans are monophasic sleepers (one period of sleep over a 24-hour cycle). Dogs also stay alert for sounds, even when sleeping, which may make them lighter sleepers than their humans sleeping.

Urban myths abound about dogs sharing their human’s sleeping spot. For example, your dog will think he’s dominant to you or he will become spoiled. While there can be a link between bed-sharing and behaviour problems, it’s not known whether co-sleeping creates the problem or the problem leads to co-sleeping in the first place. For example, a dog that shares his owner’s bed might have problems with separation anxiety. However, did the co-sleeping create the excessive attachment or did the dog’s excessive attachment cause the owner to let him into the bed?
Sometimes, the issues are unrelated, and co-sleeping simply highlights already existing problem behaviour. For example, a dog with resource guarding issues might growl and bark to protect his sleeping spot on your bed. But the problem is really about your dog unnecessarily defending what he sees as his items and territory, not about the co-sleeping. For a well-adjusted, well-behaved dog, it’s quite unlikely that sleeping in your bed or bedroom will do anything except delight your dog, comfort you, and enhance the dog-owner bond. But if your dog is showing signs of aggression or any other problem behaviour that is being worsened by co-sleeping, provide your dog with his own sleeping space while you consult with a professional trainer, a behaviour consultant, or your veterinarian.
Despite the drawbacks to co-sleeping with a dog, the researchers explain that so many owners do it because the benefits likely outweigh the disadvantages. Studies have shown many physical and mental health advantages to owning a pet, and co-sleeping increases the amount of time spent with that pet, potentially increasing those benefits. For example, co-sleeping can increase the feelings of comfort and companionship your dog provides.

Co-sleeping with your dog can also ease anxiety and provide a feeling of safety and security. Your light-sleeping canine will alert you to anything out of the ordinary, so you can rest easy through the night. Dogs are also perfect bed warmers, keeping you toasty on a cold night. And finally, there is no substitute for waking up to a tail-wagging dog.
The research study concluded that even though society may not currently regard co-sleeping in the best light, because of the many benefits, there is no need for unnecessary concern. I think those of us who share our beds and bedrooms with our dogs already know that any disturbance or inconvenience is well worth a night time of snuggles.

Jennifer Prien
I met Jennifer more than 30 years ago at the AGM of The British Bulldog NSW. She came to me after the meeting and thanked me for standing position in the club and offered her congratulations. What struck you was Jennifer was a stylish woman, immaculately presented. She aged gracefully that she had hardly changed in those 30 something years. She was one of those ageless ladies that you would not have been able to guess her age.
Jennifer married her husband Ken and moved to Blacktown, where they stayed until after Ken’s death. She then moved to Penrith, to be nearer her family. She and Ken were never blessed with children. Their mutual love of British Bulldogs led them to purchase their first bulldog, and hence the family was complete. Jennifer referred to her dogs as her kids and she certainly loved her kids.
Jennifer had a French Bulldog, who everyone knew as Jack Prien; he always got his full title. I remember when at Jennifer’s home, with the late Dulcie Partridge, that Ken was telling a tale of one of Jack Prien’s many adventures, saying how bad he was. Jumping straight to Jack’s defence, Jennifer turned to Ken and said, “lovey he was not bad, he was just being Jack”. Anybody who met Jack Prien knew he was one of the naughtiest Frenchies that you could ever meet, but not in Jennifer’s eyes: just like all her kids before him, he could do no wrong.
Jennifer and Ken bred British Bulldogs under the Rainsford prefix, starting in the late 1950s. They bred some very notable dogs in an era when the the British Bulldog was taking out many in show awards, and there were many top quality dogs. A lot of pedigrees of bulldogs today would have the Rainsford prefix behind them.
Jennifer was very involved in the running of many clubs. She was the Secretary of the British Bulldog Club of NSW from 1969 until 1978, where at the AGM she declined office. Jennifer was also involved with the Blacktown Kennel Club, The Non Sporting Club of NSW and later became the Secretary of the French Bulldog Club. Jennifer was a life member of the British Bulldog Club of NSW, and later was appointed as a Life Patron, all of which she was extremely proud.

Jennifer still attended meetings of the British Bulldog Club of NSW, and went to all the specialty shows that she could. A special thank you to Ken Trueman, and his family, who made it possible for Jennifer to attend, and still be part of her beloved Bulldog world. Jennifer was very concerned with the direction that the British Bulldogs were taking, with the change to breed standards, and asked me several questions about this. She wanted to make sure that we had a voice, becoming a friend to the New South Wales Country Region British Bulldog Association, but unfortunately her declining health prevented her from actively pursuing this.
Jennifer had a wealth of knowledge; she was a no-nonsense stickler for the rules. She could tell you all the rules on the books for the British Bulldog Club of NSW and also all the ANKC rules. If you did wrong she didn’t have to say a word, she gave you “that look” and the look was enough.
Outside of the dog world Jennifer was actively involved with the War Widows Association and was President of this for several years. She was also an active member of Legacy. Jennifer enjoyed her time as a catechist teacher, teaching religion in schools, and received a blessing from the Pope for this service. Jennifer was adept at handcrafting, making beautiful tapestries, oil paintings and paper tolling, most of which she gave to friends and family. I am sure that these are now treasured memories. Simple things gave Jennifer pleasure, like coming to shows and watching her beloved bullies strut their stuff. Jennifer was a friend to many and will be sadly missed.
I am sure that Ken and the kids were waiting for you at the end of your journey, and we thank them for letting us share her for so long. Rest in Peace Jennifer, you will be sadly missed.

A traumatic injury, for the purposes of this article, refers to physical injuries sustained by a dog, and the severity of those injuries, after being hit by a vehicle.
Anything motorised, and some man-powered vehicles are high risk for a dog who is off leash on the roads, pathways or on tracks. For example:
• Motor Vehicle
• All-terrain Vehicle (ATV)
• Motorbikes, Scooters
• Motorised Skateboards and Bicycles
It’s often said that the greater the speed the more severe the injury; however, where dogs, as with children are concerned, a dog can just as easily die if hit or travelled over at a slow walking speed.
A dog who is hit by a moving vehicle will endure potentially life threatening injuries; by way of:
• Blunt force trauma;
• Fall from height; or
• A penetrating / embedded object
Risk of Injury
Your dog is at risk of injury if he/she:
• Is able to get off their leash while out walking
• Escapes the backyard and wanders the neighbourhood
• Manages to run out the front door and onto a busy road
• Has a habit of chasing cars
• Walks too close to the edge of the road
• Gets too far ahead of you when crossing the road
• Sleeps on the driveway of your home
• Has free access to play or walk on driveway and walks behind a reversing car
Safety Precautions
Some precautions you could consider:
• Ensure the collar or harness fits securely
• Train dog not to chew through leash, or put a barrier on the leash
• Make sure fences are high enough to prevent dog from jumping over and in good condition
• Put guards below fence line to stop dog from digging under and escaping
• Place dog on leash before answering the front door if your dog is at risk of running out the door
• Keep dog on short leash when walking on footpaths if close to road side.
• Walk dog next to you when crossing the road
• Either block dog from driveway or take a routine walk around the car before ever pulling out of the driveway
• Only allow your dog to walk off leash in designated off leash zones
