I am pleased to advise that the Board of Directors elected me as our President again for the upcoming year and we can look forward to completing several important tasks. Congratulations also to Lynette Brown who was appointed to Senior Vice President and the three Deputy Vice Presidents: John Sheppard, Lyn Brand and Myron Arthur.
2020 will go down as a very turbulent year for all of us as a (hopefully) ’once in a century event’. It looks like this year of 2021 should be a considerable improvement on a year of that held disasters and plagues.
The new outline of the grounds has been completed and the lease confirmed until 2058. The external fences should be going up and the internal fences can be started in the very near future. With the Government now being responsible for the creek areas, there should be better flood mitigation developed over time.
With regards to humans, while it may take some time to get all of us vaccinated (once they finally sort out which vaccine we are going to get), it will mean that we should be able to get back to a fairly normal lifestyle. This will include travel, though like our dogs, we may have to travel with vaccination cards if travelling overseas. It will be interesting to see how the situation pans out. I cannot see all of us (Australians) being vaccinated much before the middle of this year.
Once there is safe international travel, we can get overseas judges, etc and our major events will be back on the calendar.
In closing, I wish you all a great holiday break over the New Year period and look forward to seeing you all at the various events at the complex during 2021.

Here’s hoping that 2021 brings us all good health and happiness, more freedom of movement and socialisation, and a vaccine to combat further COVID outbreaks.
2020 not only brought COVID-19, along with the loss of many lives, but we also lost a much admired and loved DOGS NSW member and past RNSWCC Liaison Officer, Alan Candlish. Alan had been sick for some time and sadly passed away at 90 years of age on 21st September. Many may remember him in his role as Liaison Officer where he went above and beyond, assisting members with difficulties with local government issues and when their dogs were threatened by the fires, storms and floods. Alan was available 24 hours, 7 days a week and he became a good friend to many. He was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in November 2007, in recognition of his outstanding service in his role. His good friend of many years, Ernie Sparham, has kindly written the vale for this issue and this can be viewed from page 7.
With the slow remergence of shows and trials, all held under COVID Safe Plans, we now have reports for a few events in this issue, including the 2020 DOGS State Obedience Trials held on Monday, 5 October and a Breed Information Day, held by The Dobermann Club of NSW on Sunday, 8 November. Coverage of these events commence of page 10.
The second of our Canine First Aid articles by Joanne Bibby (from Fursafe), discusses what to do if your dog is choking and also includes a useful Dog First Aid Choking and CPR Chart to illustrate some of the techniques. The article commences on page 21.
Our Vet Chat article refers to an orthopedic disorder that can occur in dogs and humans, ‘Legg Calve Perthes Disease’. This disease causes degeneration of the hip joint in young dogs, primarily small breeds. It is a debilitating condition that leads to loss of function of one, or both rear legs and ultimately will result in surgical treatment to keep the use of the affected limb. Further information on this disease can be found on page 14.
This month’s breed feature is the Basset Fauve de Bretagne, a smart courageous and determined, small scent hound, originally bred to find rabbits. This breed is almost a “wash and wear” dog, with a coarse, wiry coat that repels dirt and resists matting, with some dogs having more coat than others. They are energetic, love to play and require regular walks. They need to be on a leash as they can run off and follow their nose at a moment’s notice. The nose goes to the ground and can overpower the brain if the dog is not trained from an early age. Due to this breed’s intelligence, mental stimulation is as important as physical exercise. The spotlight feature commences on page 18.

Alan was born in Manchester UK on the 30th September 1929 and passed away on the 21st September 2020, just shy of his 91st birthday. Alan, being from Manchester was a Manchester United supporter and he fondly called them “his team.”
He had a long and distinguished career in the armed forces, having served as a Grenadier Guard within the British Army, and was rightly proud of his service in this distinguished regiment. He served in Malaya to fight Communist Gorillas attempting to challenge British rule and after a year he returned to the UK. Alan was contemplating his service when an offer came along to join the Australian Army. It happened to be the same time that the UK experienced the coldest winter on record and he opted for the warmer climate of Australia.
Around 1947 Alan began the four week journey by ship to Australia and commenced training at the lngleburn Army base. He was sent to the First Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment and was sent to serve in the Korean War for twelve months. Upon return, Alan commenced Jungle training before being sent back to Malaya, but this time as a peace-keeper.
Around 1954 Alan married and built a house on a block of land in Blacktown. The marriage resulted in three children, Michael, Fiona and Stewart and the family lived in Blacktown for some time.
While Alan’s love of dogs came from his grandfather, who bred Whippets in the UK, it was a Rottweiler which Alan owned in Australia. It was Alan’s love of dogs and Obedience training which resulted in, he and a friend, starting up the Blacktown Obedience Club. His involvement in the world of Obedience saw him later became an accomplished UD Obedience Judge, having adjudicated far and wide, including the prestigious Sydney Royal Easter Show.
As his children became older, they became interested in sport, particularly football, where they played with the Lynwood Park Soccer Team. One of Alan’s loves and fondest memories was of his time coaching this team, and he did so for around fifteen years. Alan separated from his first wife, but he continued his involvement with dogs.
It was during obedience training that Alan met Wendy, the love of his life, in the 1990s. She was training her Doberman and planned on showing as well. They would later be involved together with the breed for many years and perhaps best known, in more recent times, for owning Dobes.
Over the years Alan became sick and ultimately had an eye removed, due to macular degeneration. His ability to walk also diminished, resulting in Wendy devoting much of her time to looking after him. Unfortunately Alan’s memory also began to fade and ultimately he had to go into full time care. Alan spent around five years in hospital till his passing, and not only would the travel take its toll on Wendy, so did Alan’s deteriorating memory. On one occasion, Alan must have imagined he was still in the Army and demanded that Wendy remove herself from the parade ground, as the Queen was due to arrive and it was his job to protect her.
On completion of his Army service, Alan started work at Blacktown City Council as a dog catcher and cattle impoundment officer; he was the first person to perform in this newly made role in NSW. At some stage the Council asked Alan to source a suitable vehicle to carry the strays, as he had been using a borrowed truck to get the task done. It appears that Councils have changed very little since then, as they refused to pay the asking price for the truck and he was made to look for something cheaper. In a comical twist, Alan was forced to purchase a Harley Davidson Motor Bike, with a side car, where he attached a dog crate. While I could imagine poor old “Fido” sitting alongside Alan in the side car, I couldn’t quite picture him wrangling a Hereford Bull to do the same.
For decades Alan had been a well-liked identity within the dog community and had been involved with the Royal NSW Canine Council as Liaison Officer for many years, when he was first appointed in 1997. Many members have been extremely grateful for his support. The position saw him help many people, who may have had doggie issues with local councils or neighbours, and where he would attend council meetings to resolve a favourable outcome for all involved.
This led him to become a friend to many, not only to those who had been in difficulties with local government, but when a crises arose, where members and their dogs were threatened by storms, floods and fires, Alan was available to them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Alan was later awarded, in November 2007, an Honorary Life Membership, in recognition of his outstanding service as Liaison Officer by DOGS NSW. While I can’t exactly remember the first time I met Alan, I remember that after a short period of time we became the best of mates and came to know him as someone who would go above and beyond to help those in need.
One early memory was when he was master of ceremonies at the Utility Dog of the Year show. His encouragement saw all the crowd get involved to cheer along every dog that entered the ring. His voice, along with the crowd’s cheering, seemed to get the exhibits to grow a few inches taller and get them up on their toes. It almost seemed like the slowest dog in the ring would have more spring in their step than before.
At Alan’s funeral, I, along with many others, were able to say goodbye to an old “Digger” mate. While it was difficult enough for me to say goodbye, I can only imagine how Wendy and Alan’s family felt, not being able to visit him for several months, due to risk of COVID 19.
Alan often said that if he made it to his 90th Birthday then he would be happy. He made that and a little bit more.
While his memory had left him, I hope he knew he was admired, and I expect that he knew that he was loved by friends and family.
Goodbye old mate, one day I’ll see you in the Big Parade ground in the sky.
A landmark court judgement has delivered a huge win for apartment owners who keep pets.
The highest court in NSW ruled that an attempt by one of Sydney’s most famous apartment buildings to ban animals was a breach of the law.
The ruling means no apartment building in the state will be able to enforce blanket bans on pets.
Three Court of Appeal judges struck down the attempt from building The Horizon, in Darlinghurst, to bar unit residents from keeping animals, overturning the right of apartment blocks to pass bylaws restricting pet ownership.
The verdict followed a five year legal fight by a pet owner in the building to keep her dog.
Bartier Perry partner, Sharon Levy, whose firm represented Jo Cooper, the owner of a 13 year old Miniature Schnauzer named Angus, said the unanimous decision would have wider repercussions for pet owners.
“This decision effectively changes the way owners corporations can govern their strata schemes,” Ms Levy said.
“The court has found that banning animals breaches strata scheme legislation which provides that by-laws can’t be ‘harsh, unconscionable or oppressive’.”
Ms Levy said Ms Cooper’s decision to fight a lengthy legal battle to keep Angus in her apartment had not only been vindicated but would affect thousands of apartment owners across the state.
“This ruling may have far wider ramifications as to the by-laws owners’ corporations can impose on apartment owners. Every dog has its day but Angus’ win could mean some significant changes and legal challenges to by-laws for years to come,” Ms Levy said.
Ms Cooper said she was overwhelmed by the court decision, after a five-year legal battle to keep Angus in her apartment.
“The emotional toll from pursuing this case has been incredibly hard. Yet throughout the last five years I’ve also lost count of the number of pet and apartment owners who have reached out and supported our stance.”
The ruling is a win for Angus, but it’s also a decision that should ensure owners’ corporations take a more balanced approach to the governing of apartment owners.” she said.
Due to the high number of puppy enquiries received through the Club’s listing on the DOGS NSW Breeders’ Directory, and to individual member breeders, it was decided that the Club should hold a Breed Information Day. With the kind assistance of DOGS NSW, the event was held at Orchard Hills on Sunday, 8 November 2020.
Members of the public, who had made enquiries of the Club, were advised of the event and it was publicised on social media pages. More than 50 members of the public attended the event.
Demonstrations held included Obedience, Games to engage your Dog, Grooming, Nail Trimming and Teeth Cleaning. A mock Show was held, pointing out the important points of the conformation of the Dobermann that adheres to the Breed Standard and the importance of purchasing from an ANKC registered breeder.
Some misinformation was corrected: bigger isn’t better; the Dobermann is a medium sized dog. Sending your puppy to guard dog training isn’t necessary, as a well-bred Dobermann’s temperament already combines all the necessary traits for which the breed is well known.
A Committee member, who is also associated with a Dobermann rescue group, was able to advise on the pros and cons of taking on a rescue. Not always easy, but well worth the effort.
To the members who brought their Dobermann along, thank you. The dogs were great ambassadors for the Breed, showing what a great family member they become and they also displayed their “velcro” side and dedication to their owners.
We were able to advise on the many ANKC sanctioned dog sports available, not just Showing, but Agility, Tracking and others.
Potential puppy buyers were also asking about Dobermann health, and we were able to advise them of the DNA tests available for Dobermann specific issues.
The Club has always attended the Sydney Dog Lover’s Show each year, and will do so again. We will also hold further Breed Information Days, as only those interested in our breed attended, allowing us more time to showcase the breed and to speak to those who already have an interest in the Dobermann.
The feedback from the day was very positive and everyone attending now knows that The Dobermann Club of NSW is always there for help and advice.
The best comment was that “every Club member attending was so passionate about the breed”
Well the weather gods shone down on us for the State Titles this year. What a beautiful day it was! Not too hot, as it has been in the past. We received a great entry of 234 in Obedience, Rally O and RATG.
The whole day went off without a hitch, starting in the morning with reading the COVID rules; it’s restrictions and precautions being read out to the stewards, judges and then the competitors.
Competitors were kindly asked to stay away from the ring tables, as the stewards had their hands full on the day, as well as the fact that everyone had to keep their 1.5 metre distance. To my surprise, not one person went against our wishes. I think they thought if they did something wrong we would be banned from holding Obedience and Rally O Trials once again for a long period of time. Everyone was just so glad to be able to get back to trialling, so the atmosphere was wonderful.
The highest score in Obedience went to Pat Cooper with her Associate Register, Skye. CD. RE. ADX JDX GO SD SPD on a score of 194 points in Open (see page 13 for picture).
The Highest score in Rally O went to Kristy Blair with Flat Coated Retriever One Shining Amazing Wish (Imp SWE,) with a score of a perfect 100 points (see page 15 for picture).
The Highest score in Retrieving Ability Test for Gundogs went to Ray Temple’s Golden Retriever Ellishea Rips Rebel (Ai) ORA AARD, with a score of 98 points in Open RATG (see page 14 for picture).

The following policies have been adopted by the Board of Directors:
Large marquees can only be set up with the back walls against the outside perimeters of the showground i.e.
Luddenham Road fence line
Internal roadway between the main Amenities block and the Great Rugs vendor stall
Car Park fence line between the Library & Archives Building and Luddenham Road
Only exception to the above is when the marquee is being erected to service a major Speciality Show, such as a National event.
Small cabanas must be set up a minimum of 2 metres from the ringside.
Members are permitted to setup at ringside on the night PRIOR to a show under the following conditions:
• After 4 pm (normal time) or 5 pm (daylight saving time)
NO tarpaulins, ground sheets or similar are to be left on the ground overnight
vehicles are permitted on the grounds without PRIOR approval being obtained from the Office.

Generators are not permitted at the ringside or within close proximity of the rings at Orchard Hills.

• Photocopied or carbon entries are NOT acceptable
• Late or phone entries will NOT be accepted
• Payment by mail MUST be made by cheque or money order DO NOT send cash in the mail
• Bitches in oestrum may be shown EXCEPT in obedience, or if specified on show schedule
• If a Club needs to contract a “replacement” judge they are advised to take note of DOGS NSW Regulation Part II - Show, Section 12.6 (c), which relates to an exhibitor requesting a refund
• In accordance with DOGS NSW Regulations Part II - Show, Section 20.1, “Limitation of Exhibits for Judging”, Clubs reserve the right to alter or amend judging arrangements and to substitute judges if deemed necessary under this Regulation. However this does not negate the Club’s responsibilities in accordance with Part II - Show, Section 12.6 (c).

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is truly an old French hound, tracing back to the 1500s when Francois I had a pack of Breton hounds he hunted with regularly. These dogs were Grand Fauve de Bretagnes, which sadly became extinct, but their DNA continues to run in the lines of the modern rough-coated Griffons and Bassets, such as the Basset Fauve. The Grand Fauve de Bretagnes (Fawn Hound of Brittany) were larger (70-75cms) and were introduced to the French court around 1520 by Admiral d’Anneboulde. In the pack owned by Francois I, there was a stud dog named Mirraud, who was used extensively by royalty.1.
Up until the French Revolution, only the aristocracy were allowed to keep hounds and hunt with them via horseback. In 1789, aristocratic privileges were abolished, allowing anyone to own and hunt with a hound. Most peasants, however, did not own a horse, necessitating a shorter-legged, closer-ranging hunting companion. Thus, the Basset was developed. How the Basset breed was formed is a matter up for debate, but most likely smallest bred to smallest over an extended period of time.1.
By the 19th century, hound packs were made up exclusively of Bassets to hunt rabbits, hare, fox, roe deer and wild boar. Though it was rumored that both the Grands and Bassets nearly became extinct during WWII, it was confirmed by leading French Fauve Expert Mme. F Corbeau of the French Club du Fauve de Bretagne that the breed remained strong in popularity by French huntsmen.1.
The breed still remains a popular, versatile, hunting hound and family dog in France, is gaining popularity in the United States and has breed clubs in numerous countries.1.
This little basset has the same qualities as the breed from which it is derived, the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne. Very popular in its region of origin in the nineteenth century, it earned a national reputation in the course of the last 30 years of the twentieth century.
Its exceptional aptitude for hunting has allowed it to win the French Cup hunting trophy on rabbit a number of times and it has become very popular. 2.
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne, is a small, stocky, scent hound, lively, rapid for its size, used for hunting rabbit, hare, fox, roe deer and wild boar. It benefits from enormous energy coupled with excellent hardiness.
It is one of the smallest French hounds with a typical basset shape, a long body with short legs. Its head is rather long, being broadest between the ears, tapering in width to the eyes. The nose is either black or dark brown. The drop ears are set low, on a line with the eye. When pulled forward, they reach just to the end of the nose. The ears taper to a point at the end and turn inwards. 3.
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne has a dense, wire-coat that is very harsh to the touch. Coat colours come in various shades of fawn, from golden wheaten to brick red. A few black hairs on the ears or the back are acceptable in the show ring, but not desirable, as is a small white spot on the chest. 3.
Height: 32cm (12.6 ins) minimum to 38cm (15.5 ins) maximum with a tolerance of 2cm (0.8 ins) for exceptional specimens. 2.
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne are impassioned hunters but are also excellent companions of man, sociable, affectionate and equable. They adapt themselves easily to all terrains, even the most difficult, and to all quarry. When hunting they reveal themselves to be courageous, wily, and obstinate, which makes them very successful. 2.
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a neat looking hound, free from exaggeration and lively and friendly; as a scenthound, though, he has the usual failing of becoming absorbed with what he’s scenting. He is agile enough to trouble any rabbit he scents. Where the Basset Fauve de Bretagne is still used for hunting it is either singly or in pairs. 4.
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a relatively healthy dog and responsible breeders screen their stock for health concerns such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), epilepsy, cardiomyopathies, skin allergies and age-related thyroid issues. A gene test for primary open angle glaucoma is now available, meaning breeders are able to identify carriers and avoid producing this eye anomaly.1.
The vast majority of Fauves enjoy longevity, with many living to be 16 plus years old. Working with a responsible breeder can help those wishing to own a Fauve to gain the knowledge they need about specific health concerns within the breed. Good breeders utilise genetic testing of their breeding dogs to reduce the likelihood of problems with their puppies.1.
The nose goes to the ground and can overpower the brain if the dog is not trained from an early age to tune into his human. Because of this breed’s intelligence, mental stimulation is as important as physical exercise.1.
Like all hounds they are of an independent turn of mind and early training in puppyhood will reap dividends later.
A cheerful and equable breed, the Basset Fauve de Bretagne is of a size to make a handy housedog, though he has a great taste for exercise and thoroughly enjoys getting out into the fields. 3.
Basset Fauves are energetic and love to play. Regular walks need to be on a leash as they can run off and follow their nose at a moment’s notice. Areas for exercise and play, such as a backyard, should be fenced for the same reasons. Exercise can also come in the form of indoor activities, like hide-and-seek, chasing a ball rolled along the floor, or teaching them new tricks. Training for dog sports like agility, obedience and rally can also be a great way to give your dog exercise.1.
They are loving, happy, outgoing dogs and are good with children, but it must be remembered that they are scent hounds and do retain their love of the hunt so may not suit every family. 3.
The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is almost a “wash-and-wear” dog, with a coarse, wiry coat that repels dirt and resists matting. Some dogs have more coat than others. Longhaired dogs can be hand-stripped. All require grooming weekly with a fine-toothed comb, followed by a stiff brush. Shedding is seasonal. Nails should be trimmed regularly to avoid overgrowth and splitting. Teeth should be brushed and ears checked regularly. 1.

A foreign object gets stuck in a dog’s throat or has an object wrapped around the neck of a dog.
As dog owners, we must learn what hazards exist, and then isolate the dog from those hazards. This can be achieved by not leaving the hazard around, don’t allow our dogs to continue chewing something hazardous and teaching them to ‘leave it’ or ‘drop it’.
A woman, while out on a walk ages ago, asked me if my Silky chewed tea towels, bedding and shoes like her Silky did. I responded smugly that ‘Oh no, my Silky doesn’t do anything like that!!’ Then out of the blue Izzy began chewing plastic! From cellophane to plastic bags to ice cream containers and storage containers all things which could have ended in disaster. That smug look on my face was wiped off, that’s for sure!
The fact is that all dogs are at risk of choking. Why? Because they use their mouths to learn, investigate, play with and decide if the tempting item tastes good.
Hazards to be aware of, but not limited to:
• Dog treats which can break into large pieces
• Dogs eating too fast on large pieces of food
• Feeding small dog’s large pieces of food
• Plastic, rubber, fabric
• Bones which can break and splinter or where the ball joint breaks off a lamb leg, etc
• Tennis balls which can compress in the dog’s mouth and become stuck
• Small tennis balls designed for small dogs becoming lodged in a larger dog’s throat
• Children’s toys which have small parts
• Batteries
• Clothing like socks, underwear, bikinis
• The squeaky thing in the squeaky toy
• Long leash, fishing wire or rope wrapped around dog’s neck
• Dog appears agitated or distressed, pacing back and forth
• Pawing at the mouth
• Has difficulty breathing or begins gasping for breath
• Legs splayed with head down as though dog is trying to draw breath
• Gums, lips, tongue turns blue or grey
• Neck stretched out, if sitting
• Drooling uncontrollably
• Collapse
• Experiences respiratory failure
a. Check for dangers a danger may be that the dog has become aggressive (warning: never put a muzzle on a dog who has breathing difficulties).
b. Is your dog responding to your voice or your touch? If not, your dog may be unconscious.
c. Send for help if there is someone else in the house get them to do things like get the first aid kit, help carry dog into house, prepare the car and call the Vet. They may also be able to help you restrain your dog.
d. Check the airway for vomit in the mouth, or foreign object and remove if there is.
a. Open dog’s mouth, pull tongue forward.
b. If the object is visible, use your forceps or tweezers to remove the object. If it breaks into pieces, remove all if possible. You can try to remove an object using a finger sweep (move finger from one side of mouth to the other). Be careful not to push object deeper into throat. If your dog is behaving aggressively do not use finger sweep method.
c. Check the breathing (respirations). Feel/watch the rise and fall of the chest start artificial respiration if not breathing.
d. Check circulation start CPR if no pulse.
e. Get to Vet. Do not pull on hooks (e.g. fish hooks) or pull on the tiny neck bones located in the back of a dog’s throat.
a. Small Dog: Lift dog upside down with hips/back legs. Put dog’s back against your stomach, head facing down, place your hands or closed fist on the dog’s belly just under the rib cage and push in the direction of your stomach sharply, 5 times to expel object.
b. Large Dog: Bend over behind dog and lift dog’s hips/ back legs. Wrap your arms around dog’s belly close to hips (push air out of lungs); thrust your arms/hands up and toward their lower rib cage, sharply 5 times to expel object.
c. Stop and check airway after thrusts to see if the object has become dislodged and remove it if you can. Continue to repeat procedure and re-check until you arrive at the vet surgery. Do not continue the thrusting process if the object has been removed.
d. Check the breathing (respirations) feel/ watch the rise and fall of the chest. Start artificial respiration if not breathing. e. Check circulation (pulse) start CPR if no pulse.
4. If object is removed and your dog has stopped breathing, you will need to begin artificial respiration.
5. If heart stops, begin CPR.
6. Wrap in warm blanket.
7. Get to vet. If you have a driver:
• If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration on the way to the vet surgery; if your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR on the way to the vet surgery.

The actions mentioned above are only if it is a dire emergency. If the dog has collapsed, try to remove any obvious object, but getting to the vet ASAP is always the best way forward. You could try and pull a blocking object out, but the odds of : a) being bitten, b) not dislodging the object and c) trying to pull the laryngeal cartilages out (have had people damaging the larynx) are all quite high.

Legg Calve Perthes disease is an orthopedic disorder that can occur in dogs and humans. This congenital disease causes degeneration of the hip joint in young dogs, primarily small breeds. It is a debilitating condition that leads to loss of function of one, or both rear legs. It is also called avascular or aseptic necrosis of the femoral head. Animals affected by Legg Calve Perthes disease will ultimately need surgical treatment to keep the use of the affected limb.
In Legg Calve Perthes disease, an interruption of the blood supply to the head and neck of the femur causes the bone there to die. Eventually, the blood supply returns to normal, and the bone remodels itself. However, while it is in the diseased state and the animal bears weight on it, the head of the femur becomes flattened. Therefore, when the bone remodels to that new shape, the joint becomes deformed. Severe arthritis then develops quickly. The hip is extremely painful for the dog during the initial low blood supply phase and chronically sore after the remodelling phase. 1.
• Irritability is often the first sign that there is a problem, but it can be quite vague and difficult to determine a cause.
• Licking and chewing at the hip area may be seen early in the disease process, and this allows you to narrow the problem down to the hip and report it to your veterinarian.
• Pain from Legg Calve Perthes disease as it progresses may cause your dog to cry out, especially when stretching a rear leg or rising from a lying down position.
• Lameness will eventually occur as the dog has difficulty bearing weight on the affected leg. He will limp considerably or hold the leg up entirely.
• As time goes on, your dog will experience loss of muscle mass over the affected hip as the muscles become smaller from disuse.
• Ultimately, the affected leg will appear shorter than the other one. 1.
• Grating or popping sounds and sensations when joint is manipulated (called Crepitius)
Legg Calve Perthes disease in dogs is caused by an interruption in the blood supply to the head and neck of the femur. The exact mechanism for this disturbance is not understood.1. It is commonly seen in miniature, toy, and small-breed dogs, and has a genetic basis in Manchester Terriers.
The reasoning behind why some breeds develop this condition is around rapid growth and maturity. These breeds are small, rapidly get to 3/4 adult weight, which is where sexual maturity starts to kick in. It is thought that the growth plate across the femoral neck starts to close prematurely, thus disrupting the circulation to the femoral head.
The condition is rarely seen under 5 months but usually by 8 months it can be fairly obvious. Rarely is this condition bilateral, usually only affecting one hip.
There is no gender predilection for Legg Calve Perthes disease in dogs. Most dogs with this disease are diagnosed between five and eight months of age. 1.
All terrier breeds and most toy breeds can be affected by Legg Calve Perthes disease. The following breeds are all more prone to this condition than other dogs (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals):

• Fox Terrier

• Miniature Pinscher
• Pomeranian
• Pekingese
• Poodle
• Pug
• Schipperke
• Scottish Terrier
• Shetland Sheepdog
• Australian Silky Terrier
• Welsh Terrier
• West Highland White Terrier
• Yorkshire Terrier 1.
Legg Calve Perthes disease is diagnosed through a veterinarian’s examination and hip x-rays. The x-rays can also help determine how advanced the disease process is.1.
• Newer treatments that can possibly be used, if caught early enough, could be the use of bisphosphonate medication, a group of drugs that are used with people that have osteoporosis as it can improve the blood supply to affected areas. 2.
• Surgery is required in virtually all cases of Legg Calve Perthes disease. Once the bone remodels in the wrong shape, the dog will forever experience arthritis and pain. The surgical procedure that is used for Legg-CalvePerthes disease is a femoral head and neck ostectomy or osteotomy (FHO). This means that the head and neck of
the femur is surgically removed. 1. Many people are very concerned about what this surgery means for their dog’s future. How can a dog walk without a proper ball and socket hip joint? Surprisingly, this procedure produces excellent results in most dogs. The muscle groups involved in the hip joint do not attach to the head or neck of the femur, so they aren’t disturbed by its removal. Also, these muscle groups are very large and strong, so they are able to stabilise the area themselves. Lastly, because this is mostly a problem in toy breed dogs, the hip does not bear a large amount of weight.1.
• Medications may help control the pain associated with Legg Calve Perthes disease before and just after surgery. This does not resolve the condition, but it does help the dog to be more comfortable.1.
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as Rimadyl and Deramaxx decrease inflammation in the hip joint, helping with pain.1.
• Pain medications such as tramadol are helpful for pain before and after surgery, and they work especially well in conjunction with NSAIDs.1.
*Do not give your pet any medications for pain without checking with your veterinarian first. Human medications are often not metabolized the same way in dogs as they are in people and can have devastating effects.
The genetics of this condition are uncertain at this time. The best advice given would be not to breed with Dogs that have suffered from Legg Calve Perthes disease and ideally, not repeat that exact same mating. 2.
