Dear Members,
With NSW successful tackling the COVID 19 pandemic, we are now hopefully all heading to Step 3 of the lifting of the lockdown. Step 2 was largely achieved on June 13, which means, if there were no sudden increases in cases, we should be tracking around the beginning of July for step 3 to be taken.
Equally by now, the DOGS NSW booking system for training should be well in place with multiple groups of 20 people being able to train, provided the 1.5 meter rule applies within the group training and that groups are well separated by a distance 10 meters between groups and a minimum of 4 meters square per person should be estimated in the area being used.
Copies of our COVID safe plan should be available in multiple areas, as well as the DOGS NSW website. This will include the need to keep records of people’s names of who attended various sessions, when and with whom. These records must be kept for four (4) weeks to satisfy Government requirements in case of a breakdown.
If matters continue to improve ,with no flare ups of the virus, we can start to contemplate Specialty Shows being held from mid August, with All breeds shows possibly from late September. We would still need to finalise and publish our COVID safety plans for both these types of events before giving the go ahead. We would also need to assess how the Specialty shows ran and continually keep tweaking things as restrictions ease, to ensure everyone’s safety in all situations.
On the ANKC front with the Brachycephalic breeds affected by the Netherlands Government, the ANKC has sent letters of support to the FCI against the changes and particularly against the proposed cross breeding. Also, a critique to the Netherlands Kennel Club (and the FCI) around the recommendations in the backing document for these changes, which we have found to be flawed and lacking in specific scientific backing, particularly when altering proportions of the muzzles within these breeds. Copies of these letters are available on the ANKC website.

There is a set Scale of Fees applicable at these Clinics – at reduced rates for all Dogs NSW Members, so long as they comply with my reasonable requests to have their paperwork in order and Microchip records readily available, also that their dogs are well disciplined and used to close handling. Fee details can be found on DOGS NSW Website (Members/News & Updates) and on Facebook: ACES Eye Clinic - DOGS NSW Members
All ACES booking requests should be forwarded by Email to bfrob01@gmail.com and not to my mobile (as a recorded message or a text). Once scheduling time comes around I need to have all requests in the same Email folder if I am to give each person the time required.
Breed Clubs please note: If your members support the idea of a stand-alone ACES Clinic (e.g. in conjunction with a Heart Clinic or approved DNA Test sample collection), separate arrangements may be agreed to, if YOU book the venue and organise the appointments. For further information on ACES Eye Certification at Orchard Hills, also in regional areas from time to time, go to the Facebook Group page: ACES Eye Clinic - DOGS NSW Members.

Our spotlight feature for this month is the Harrier, a friendly, sweettempered pack hound, who loves the company of people or dogs and is excellent with children. It is an active breed, which loves to go exploring, sniffing and trailing, so best to keep on a leash at all times, unless in a safely enclosed area. Thank you to John Bryson who assisted in this feature.
AWCLO Deidre Crofts returns to write us an article on Dog Breeding during the pandemic and how it has impacted our registered breeders. This article features on page 23.
Some interesting information has come forward as a news article, that shows that many pet owners are using the lockdown to focus on the health of their cats and dogs. The data shows that many owners had increased routine vet visits, ensuring everything is up to date, and elective procedures are taking place. To read more on these findings please turn to page 26.
Finally, as many of us are now returning to the work place, some of our four-legged friends may be feeling a little anxious. To help reduce separation anxiety in pets there are a number of things you can do to assist. Please turn to pages 24 to 25 to find out how.

The articles of Association states that the Board of Directors has: “the complete control and management of RNSWCC.”
That control needs to be made by people who will vote according to their conscience, but also by people who ‘care‘ - care about the members; the breeds; the clubs; the future of pedigree dogs and the ‘hobby’ we know to be a most vital, major part of our lives.
I am concerned at falling numbers of exhibitors, the number of shows, Government regulation/s, breed standards, disunity across State regulations/lack of uniformity across country.
I am running because I do care. The Board of Directors that gets elected to control depends on you and your vote.
How many years have you been a Member of the RNSWCC and its predecessors:13 Years

Having an extensive career in law, company secretarial function and regulatory compliance, I am ready and able to sit on the Board of DOGS NSW; where I can deliver value through my technical and operational knowledge.

In many cases I have had to work alongside the relevant government agencies affording me not only successful outcomes, but a thorough understanding of government processes; this experience I believe wil translate easily to the functioning of the Board.
Prior legal and company secretarial / compliance roles stand me in good steed for the Board, not only from an operational perspective, but highlights my ability as a liaison between stakeholders, whether governmental or corporate.

I was given my first Schnauzer in 1974. This event precipitated a strong love of this beautiful breed and lifelong associations shared within our dog world.
I have found the dog world I enjoy is a wonderful place, albeit not without issues and problems. It does not discriminate, it allows people of all ages and abilities to partake in dog sports, including Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Herding, Lure Coursing and the newly introduced Tricks competitions. It supports a strong Rescue effort through its clubs and membership.
There are also many and varied activities, occupations and businesses that lend support to our dog world. It is a rich network of people and dogs.
We enjoy the unique ability to share friendships and associations with many people from many places locally, interstate and internationally, all through the mutual love of our beloved canine companions.
If my application to the Board of DOGS NSW is successful, I will bring a fresh set of eyes, enthusiasm and a strong desire to promote our organisation with positivity to all areas of the public through hard work and effort. I believe in inclusivenot exclusive.
It will be my goal to engage and grow our membership by showcasing our diverse dog breeds and understand the privilege of owning and participating in our many and varied breed clubs and activities.
I believe we should engage the public in our journey to reconnect and build our dog sport activities and to welcome and mentor newcomers with warmth, guidance and friendship.
Clearly we need to engage our young people across the broad spectrum of our sport. We need to encourage their participation in joining club committees and ensure we engage, listen and lend support to their ideas and needs.
The Dog World gives us the oportunity to experience the bond and love we have for our dogs and feel what it is to be loved by a dog.

The recovery from COVID-19 will need to be managed carefully if our hobby is to come back in a strong position in order to regain our premier position in the dog world.

The Pre 1987 British Bulldog Standard – why did the ANKC Amend it? Recently there has been a great deal of comment on Facebook, regarding the decision by the ANKC to amend the British Bulldog Breed Standard, much has been made of what was done, without any mention of why it was done, the ANKC Directors believe that both sides of the story need to be told.
Until 1992, it was ANKC policy to adopt only The Kennel Club (England) Standards. Around 1987, the Kennel Club (England) urged all English Breed Clubs to revise their Standards, this was completed around 1994. Due to Breed Clubs and breeders/owners in Australia disagreeing with many of the revised Standards, the ANKC agreed to allow Breed Clubs and/or owners, where there were no breed clubs. to choose between the Pre-1987 Standard, the revised Kennel Club Standard, the FCI Standard or the Country of Origin/Development Standard. The process to choose one of the above standards, the Breed Clubs, and owners where there were no breed clubs were required to conduct a survey of all registered owners of each breed, these results were then ratified at the May 1998 ANKC Conference, arising from the surveys a number of breeds, including the British Bulldog opted to retain the Pre 1987 Standard.
In the UK in 2008 the BBC aired a documentary “Pedigree Dogs Exposed”, it was a hard hitting expose of congenital defects in pedigree dogs, some of which were allegedly caused by poor breeding practices associated with exaggerations required in Breed Standards, one of the outcomes of the documentary was that during 2009 the Kennel Club held a comprehensive review, conducted in conjunction with a large body of experts, including vets, to ensure that they encouraged the breeding of healthy dogs. In this review every Breed Standard was rewritten to make it explicitly clear that the process of exaggerating features because they are seen to look good, when this at the expense of the dog's health, was not in any way acceptable.
Following the UK review, a recommendation from the ANKC Breed Standards Committee, that the ANKC cancel the current ANKC Policy of allowing breeds to adopt the Pre 1897 Kennel Club (England) Standards, and for the ANKC to adopt the current standard from the Kennel Club (England) or from the Country of Origin/Development, was endorsed by the Delegates to the October 2009 Conference, however after submissions from Breed Councils, the 2010 Conference resolved that no action be taken to implement the action from the 2009 Conference in relation to the Pre 1987 Breed Standard.
In 2009, “Pedigree Dogs Exposed” was broadcast in Australia as part of the ABC “Catalyst” Program, thanks to pre-work by the ANKC with the AVA and RSPCA, who were provided with information on health testing programs adopted by a large number of breeds, the impact was not as great as it had been in the UK, however a focus in the “Catalyst” program was on the British Bulldog, in particular the words in the Standard that required the head to be strikingly massive and large in proportion to the dog's size, and the skull to be very large - the larger the better, and that most British Bulldog Bitches were unable to whelp naturally due to the size of puppies heads. This was the start of concerted efforts by parties such as, the RSPCA, the AVA and the ABC the vehicle for prosecuting the case attacking brachycephalic breeders, without input from the National British Bulldog Breed Council (NBBC) , ANKC found great difficulty in counteracting the criticism of over exaggeration in the breed standard, when engaging with aggressive interviewers who were aware of the changes to the standard made by the Kennel Club (UK), and who could not understand why Australian British Bulldog Breeders would not follow the actions of the country that was considered the home of the British Bulldog and where it was developed.
In a follow up article to “Pedigree Dogs Exposed” in the Sydney Morning Herald in December 2009, Assoc Professor Paul McGreevy from Sydney University commented that with many judges and breeders, asking them to change breed standards is like asking them to rob a granny.
From this time forward the ANKC was continually under attack, by the AVA, RSPCA, ABC and Academics from the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Sydney University, and individual Veterinarians. The main objective of these campaigns was to get ANKC to modify words contained in the British Bulldog Breed Standard head and skull description, such as “the head strikingly massive and large in proportion to the dog's size, the face extremely short, the skull should be very large - the larger the better”.
The crusade against breed standard exaggerations was ramped up in 2016, with the Australia wide release of the “Love is Blind” video, promoted as an animal health and welfare campaign between the Australian Veterinary Association and the RSPCA, to raise awareness of the problems caused by exaggerated physical features, such as brachycephaly, short limbs and excessive skin wrinkling, and calling for a fundamental shift in the way purebred dogs are selected and bred in Australia.
After the “Love is Blind Campaign”, the call for change in breed standards was joined by Academics from Sydney University Veterinary Science Faculty, Professors Nicholas and McGreevy who challenged ANKC to respond to such media statements as:
“In some cases, traits that are best regarded as defects, have actually been included in breed standards, e.g. brachycephaly in the British Bulldog. Breeders compete with one another to see how well they can produce phenotypes that conform to a written standard, including traits that have, at best, questionable welfare benefits. The British Bulldog is required to have a curved ‘roach’ back, it is therefore not surprising that British Bulldogs are sometimes born with twisted spines, i.e. hemivertebrae. For the British Bulldog, the skull should be very large, the larger the better’ (Pre-1987 Kennel Club, London). This is a breed in which, large foetal head size commonly leads to dystocia (difficulties in birthing)”.
Professor Nicholas also wrote:
“Of course, many of the members and governance personnel of Kennel Clubs are pedigree dog breeders. It is right therefore to pause and consider the extent to which welfare may have become subordinated to certain breed practices. It is not difficult to see how, after generations of owners have spent years focusing on the morphology of their dogs, some find it hard to see the proverbial wood for the trees. Breed standards can easily become entrenched in the minds of breeders, buyers and fanciers, as well as those (often interested parties) who are involved in the judging (and so promotion) of a breed and its ‘established’ characteristics”. Until 2014 the ANKC had been meeting, on a regular basis, with the RSPCA National Office regarding health issues in pedigree dogs, despite being presented with overwhelming evidence, that many breeds had introduced health screening programs to reduce the incidence of known inherited health conditions, the RSPCA would not back away from their position that ANKC should remove breeding exaggerations required in Breed Standards, including of course the British Bulldog, as this issue dominated every meeting and, as ANKC was unable to provide a logical answer as to why British Bulldog Breeders would not agree to Standard changes, we terminated the meetings.
Faced with continuing criticism for indecision in addressing exaggerations in the British Bulldog Standard, and with no positive information to address the adverse commentary, the ANKC Directors felt that they had no alternative but to take action to resolve the situation.
Subsequently, the ANKC wrote to the NBBC suggesting changes to modify the exaggerations in the head and skull description, the suggestions were rejected, later ANKC Directors were informed, by some British Bulldog owners, that they had not been consulted on the proposed changes to the head description.
In December 2017 the Board wrote to the NBBC, expressing their disappointment at the decision not to endorse the head changes, and as a result asked them to provide a rationale, as to why, they should be allowed to retain the Pre-1987 Standard with the head and skull exaggerations that were the cause of continuing censure, in April 2018 the Council replied with a series of statements, which the Board did not consider provided a rationale that could support the retention of the Pre 1987 Standard, and satisfactorily address the ani-brachycephalic campaigns.
In December 2018, the NBBC wrote to the ANKC with a proposal for a National Health Scheme, the ANKC Health and Wellbeing Committee considered that although the proposal was a promising start to control health issues with the British Bulldog, it did not address the concerns that had been raised in regard to the exaggerated head and skull descriptions, but agreed that if the NBBC wished to proceed to implement this scheme, they should do so under their own umbrella. In view of this initiative, the Board resolved to delay any further action on Standard alterations until the scheme was in progress.
At the October 2019 ANKC Board meeting, it was reported to the Directors, that the proposed National Health Scheme had not gone ahead, coupled with the Boards determination that the statements made by the NBBC, in April 2018 for retaining the Pre-1987 Standard, did not answer the December 2017 request for a rationale, it was resolved to give the NBBC a choice of adopting the Kennel Club (UK) current breed standard or the amended Pre 1987 breed standard, as proposed by the ANKC Board of Directors.
At the February 2020 ANKC Board Meeting, after reviewing the response from the NBBC, the Directors agreed, that the Council had still not addressed whether they wanted to adopt the Kennel Club (UK) current breed standard or the proposed amended Pre 1987 standard, and resolved to implement the amended Pre 1987 standard.
The NBBC have written to all Breed Councils seeking support for an approach to the ANKC to rescind the decision, as the NBBC have indicated that they are seeking legal advice, ANKC will only comment on why the amendments were made, and wish to restate that the changes were made solely due to health concerns within the breed, and to meet its obligation under ANKC Objective (e) “to promote the health and welfare of Canis Familiaris”, and to demonstrate, that the ANKC Ltd has taken seriously, the global commentary on health problems associated with the exaggerated requirements in the Pre 1987 British Bulldog Standard. It is now 30 years, since the NBBC opted to retain that Standard rather than adopt the revised Kennel Club Standard, over those years there have been huge advances in research into morphological exaggerations in canines, and the British Bulldog has been a main focus of these studies, the consensus of the scientists is, that problems in the British Bulldog are directly related to the standard for the breed, and this has been adopted as the mantra for those who seek to alter or even ban the breed.
In coming to its decision, the Board took into consideration, that Veterinary research has identified that the shorter the face the more changes occur within the nasal cavity with septal deviations, stenosis within the nasal cavity as well as just the nares, elongation of the soft palate .... to mention the main ones, added to that within the British Bulldog is a narrowing of the trachea that is seen, and can considerably affect breathing.
The width of the neck can be fairly directly linked to the size of the head, so asking for a relatively large head, rather than one that is as large as possible, is common sense and moving in the right direction.
ANKC has invited the NBBC to work with the ANKC Health and Wellbeing Committee to institute health programs that will demonstrate that Australian Breeders are working to improve the health of the British Bulldog, who remains hugely popular, as a family companion for his great character and loyalty, the fact that the breed is so popular makes it all the more important that we find ways to improve and protect its health as a priority
ANKC want to see the breed prosper and develop, rather than seeing it banned in its entirety, which is still on the global agenda of many Veterinarians and Animal Rights Organisations who masquerade as Animal Welfare Societies.
In conclusion, after 12 years of attempting to defend the indefensible exaggerations in the Pre 1987 British Bulldog Standard, and 3 years of unproductive consultations with the National British Bulldog Council, to ensure improvement in the health and the future of the British Bulldog in Australia, the ANKC Board of Directors had no alternative but to modify the exaggerations in the Pre 1987 Standard.

Sources have widely conflicting stories about the origins of this breed. According to one, the earliest Harrier types were crossed with Bloodhounds, the Talbot Hound, and even the Basset Hound. According to another, the breed was probably developed from crosses of the English Foxhound with Fox Terrier and Greyhound. And yet another, the Harrier is said to be simply a bred-down version of the English Foxhound,1. which apart from a few finer points it is. The first Harrier pack in England was established by Sir Elias de Midhope in 1260 and spread out as a hunting dog throughout the west of England and into Wales. Although having been around for all these years, the breed was finally only recognised by the Kennel Club in 2019, and first shown at Crufts in 2020.
In any case, today’s Harrier is between the Beagle and English Foxhound in size and was developed primarily to hunt hares, though the breed has also been used in fox hunting. The name, Harrier, reveals the breed’s specialty. The Harrier has a long history of popularity as a working pack dog in England. 1.
The points of the modern Harrier are very similar to those of the Foxhound. The Harrier, however, is smaller than the Foxhound: the most popular size is 19 to 21 inches (48.26 to 53.34 cm). Proportion - is off square. The Harrier is slightly longer from point of shoulder to rear projection of the upper thigh than from withers to ground. He is active, well balanced, full of strength and quality. 2.
The main differences with the Foxhound, apart from the size, is firstly the expression, which is described as bold in the Harrier rather than keen in the Foxhound. This is because of the very prominent eyebrows in the Harrier. The second difference is the tail, which is slightly lower set than the Foxhound and carried from between 12 o’clock and 3 o’clock, so generally carried slightly away from the body. 3.
Friendly and not aggressive. Essentially a Pack Hound.2.
The Harrier is cheerful, sweet-tempered, tolerant of people, and it is excellent with children. This pack dog is good with other dogs, but should be supervised with non-canine pets unless it is raised with them from puppyhood. It prefers life in a pack with people, dogs, or both. This active dog likes to go exploring, sniffing, and trailing, so be sure to keep it on a leash or in a safe enclosed area. Some Harriers like to bay. 1.
They are a high energy dog, that requires regular exercise, whether that be just going for a walk or playing with family members, which they love to do. It is important that they do get this, so they are not too mischievous around the yard. 3.
Height 48.26 to 53.34 cm. (19 to 21 inches) 2.

Was 2019 just a practice run for what 2020 would bring us? Many who were affected by drought, then fires, then flood would not argue.
With the pandemic coming upon us with barely time to think of all the consequences, it was really quite amazing the changes we have made in every aspect of our lives, but that is how we are, Australians are resilient!
In very quick time, it was essential that many adjustments were required concerning dog breeding programs, raising of puppies, socialisation of puppies, rehoming of puppies. At the start of lockdown, veterinary services were not considered an essential business, that was so difficult to fathom but thankfully, the government saw reason and that was addressed. Social distancing was required and that made a visit to the Vet ‘different’ to say the least with limited contact mandated and many services put ‘on hold’ as they were deemed non-essential or non-emergency.
Very early on I had members contact me wanting to know how were they going to rehome their puppies, could they rehome them early i.e. before 8 weeks old? Could they have puppy purchasers come to their home to pick their puppies up? Of course, the answers were NO and NO.
Some members put their breeding programs on hold, but some proceeded as usual, as is their choice. Adjustment to how we were to deal with the rehoming process has resulted in changes I know some members have told me they will incorporate into the handling of future litters. Instead of having prospective purchasers visit to view available puppies, this had to be done with photos and videos and I guess some probably conducted Zoom meetings, as has become the trend in many businesses.
It was fortunate that the rehoming of animals was seen to be a welfare concern and the Government deemed that essential, but the way it was to be handled was very different for the majority. Transport businesses could deliver puppies/dogs, road transport became the only way to go. How fortunate was it that many in our hobby are also in the animal transport field and they re-fashioned their business to meet that need? I know some people will continue to do their puppy re-homing in the same way, even when social distancing requirements have been dramatically eased.
The handling of the puppy sales paperwork also has changed forever. I have had members comment that they thought they had everything covered with previous litters, but they found that so many prospective purchasers needed the gap filled from the personal meet and greet done in the past and the new online process that had to be implemented. More photos, copies of all parents health certificates, copies of all vet treatment for the dog/puppy being rehomed, Health Certificate from Vet, in essence copies of absolutely everything that related to the dog/puppy. Yes, most breeders already were doing this, but some would just show copies of documents at a puppy inspection. Those that had not used sales contracts in the past are now doing so and incorporating details in that document that previously was delivered verbally. As some members have house members in the high-risk category of infection, when lockdown eased, they would arrange a meeting in a public place, observing social distancing, to do the handover of the sanitised puppy where payment was done online i.e. no handling of cash.
DOGS NSW new regulation for the transfer of ownership of puppies, directly to the new owners at time of registration of the litter, has shown clear advantages, to ensure that a smooth transfer is now the responsibility of the breeder. This process was conducted seamlessly as full disclosure of everything about the dog/puppy had occurred well before the date of rehoming.
No doubt, I will hear of other changes members have made in the need to evolve through this pandemic. I will share these with the membership.
Inconvenience to our usual practices is just a small thing to deal with. I am thankful of being in the lucky country, Australia. Stay safe and well!

Working from home has become the new normal, but what happens when life slowly returns to normal and your four-legged dog or cat is left to their own devices?
To help reduce separation anxiety in pets and ensure a smooth transition back into ‘real life’ as COVID-19 restrictions begin to lift across the country, PETstock VET, Dr Sasha Nefedova, has compiled some expert tips to aid pet parents with the process.
For any animal that already suffers from anxiety the transition will be difficult. Even for dogs that have not shown any pre-existing signs of anxiety, being with their pet parent for every hour of the day to suddenly only mornings and nights is likely to take an emotional toll on your pet.
, Symptoms of anxiety in pets include trembling, licking of lips, pacing, increased drooling or salivation, shaking, or a decrease in appetite.
Establishing a strong, daily routine will ensure your dog can have a sense of safe familiarity when you return to the office.
While working at home, it is recommended that you physically distance yourself from your pet for at least an hour twice a day. Placing your dog or cat in a quiet room away from you and your workspace, or in the backyard, will help make the transition to your sudden absence much easier on them.
While you’re are at home, ensure you’re taking your dog out for a walk before or after each workday. Keeping walks to before, or after work, will help establish a routine that they are familiar with when you return to your workplace, rather than expecting a walk at lunchtime. Exercising together daily will improve the bond between you and your pet, as well as calm them and reduce their anxiety.
Enrichment toys such as a Kong or food puzzles will keep your dog busy for hours and offer a sense of comfort. Giving your dog a ‘job’ to do will keep them mentally stimulated and help manage their anxiety or boredom. However, it’s important that you identify the cause of their anxiety so you’re not at risk of reinforcing the issue.
A Thundershirt is an anti-anxiety weighted coat for dogs, that works to calm their nerves if they are feeling anxious, overexcited or fearful; particularly during winter when there is greater chance of storms, heavy rain, or hail. The gentle, constant pressure of a Thundershirt has a calming affect on a dog’s nervous system and is a safe and drug free solution to help combat your dog’s anxiety.
Some pets with anxiety respond well to music being played. Calming music in the background is an effective distraction from silence and will sooth their nerves.
While you are still working at home, it’s the perfect time to test this method so that you can monitor their reaction closely. If they sleep and don’t present any signs of feeling anxious, then leave some music playing throughout the day, when you make the transition back to your workplace.
If your pet’s anxiety worsens, speak to your vet about medication to help with their condition.

Pet owners are using the lockdown to focus on the health of their cats and dogs, ensuring routine vet visits are up to date, chronic conditions are monitored and elective procedures are taking place, according to claims data from PetSure, Australia’s pet insurance underwriter.
With veterinary surgeries remaining open during the lockdown, the pet insurer has recorded an increase in the number of claims paid out for vet procedures, reflecting the higher number of vet visits taking place. Compared with April 2019, claims volumes in April this year were 16% higher.
CEO, Alexandra Thomas commented, “Anecdotally we know that pets have done well in lockdown thanks to Australians staying home. Now our claims data shows that in the form of increased claims and vet visits: owners were more likely to visit the vet.”
Ms Thomas said, “Pet owners have taken care of chronic health issues, attended to their pet’s wellbeing and acted swiftly on acute issues. Evidence of this is the increase in treatment, claims and pet insurance payments for medical and surgical procedures. One upside of working from home may well be that pet owners are able to care for their pet in their recovery, so have opted to act on health issues rather than delay them.”
Claims data also found there has been no increase in respiratory claims since the pandemic was declared, and no cases of reported COVID-related illnesses. The latest data found that respiratory claims represented 0.2% of claims in dogs and approximately 0.05% of claims in cats. Compared with this time last year, overall there has been a slight decrease in the total number of claims relating to respiratory infections in dogs and cats.
Ms Thomas added, “We have been monitoring diagnoses relating to respiratory infections such as pneumonia, coughing and fever in both dogs and cats. These conditions have actually decreased slightly.”
According to the claims data the ratio of treatment across standard, specialist and emergency clinics remained consistent during the COVID-19 lockdown. Standard vet practices account for 87% of claims, followed by treatment at specialist referral clinics (11% of claims) and emergency clinic treatment (2% of claims).
Ms Thomas concluded, “During a stressful time for many Australians, one silver lining is that pet owners have had more time with their pets, been able to get them to the vet in increasing numbers and use their pet insurance to help pay for vet treatment.
“Pet insurance exists to help pet owners access quality treatment when it’s needed – these claim statistics suggest pet owners have been able to do exactly that during lockdown.”
