NOTICE TO DOGS SA MEMBERS UPDATE 17 Mar 2020 - COVID-19 At a Special Meeting of the DOGS SA Board of Directors the following motion was passed in relation to the ongoing COVID‐19 Virus pandemic. 1.

With effect midnight on Tuesday 17 March 2020 all DOGS SA and affiliate activities are to cease until midnight 01 June 2020 with the decision to be reviewed 04 May 2020. The COVID‐19 virus is not expected to peak until June 2020. The review one month earlier would enable any affiliates time to establish an event and gain entries, they cannot do this at 1 weeks’ notice. Continual review can be established after this date, with commencement of activities to commence one month after the restriction has been lifted.

Consideration for lifting the restriction would need to be at the guidance of SA Health that the threat of transmission of the COVID‐19 virus has been reduced and normal public activities are suitable to resume.

No face to face meetings of DOGS SA committees will be held during the shutdown or until reassessed on 04 May 2020.

DOGS SA Board meetings will be conducted by telecon or other electronic media and only urgent matters discussed.

Judges training lectures are cancelled, and the training becomes true self education.

The grounds will be closed, and gates locked with the office remaining open for transactions and answering queries, but closed to visitors. All transactions are to be either electronic, telephone or by post.

What does mean for DOGS SA members and affiliates All organized events including but not limited to Sanctioned events, training, club competitions and social/ pet days are to be cancelled in accordance with point 1. No meetings will be held at David Roche Park until after the reassessment on 04 May 2020. It is recommended that affiliates do not hold face to face meetings and only meet via electronic media. At this stage there will be no effect on the end of year trainee judges’ exams, however it is the expectation that trainees will self‐educate. Once the restrictions are lifted please consult with your group leaders for any further mentoring if you consider necessary. The office will still be processing all transactions including litter registrations and any other documentation required, however. The doors will not be open, and all members will be expected to either post or email documentation to the office. They will of course be open to answer any questions you may have via telephone or email. Lastly if you have any concerns or questions over the direction DOGS SA Council has taken please feel free to contact either myself or any other Councillor or the Executive Officer who will gladly answer any questions you may have. As prescribed in the Constitution of the Association, Council may appoint a person/s to complete an inspection on a members property to ensure the keeping and welfare of the dogs are maintained to the minimum standards as prescribed by DOGS SA and South Australian Government Legislation. Council is seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ from eligible members interested in being approved by Council to carry out inspection of members property in accordance with the above rule. ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Be a Full Ordinary Member of the South Australian Canine Association Inc. (SACA) (or equivalent). 2. Been a financial member of the SACA for a minimum period of (5) years. 3. Experience in any aspect of the Associations activities which includes the breeding of pedigree dogs or any other recognised discipline. 4. Experience in animal welfare/husbandry in relation to dogs. e.g. significant experience in breeding dogs, kennel management, animal control officer, veterinary nurse or relevant education/training in animal welfare. 5. Knowledge and understanding of the Constitution, Rules and Code of Ethics of the South Australian Canine Association Inc. 6. Knowledge of relevant legislation impacting on the welfare and keeping of Domestic Animals. 7. Not been found guilty of any breach or offence with respect to the Constitution, Rules and Code of Ethics of the South Australian Canine Association Inc and/or relevant State or Local government legislation. 8. Possess excellent communication skills, written and verbal. 9. Professional, courteous and possess good customer service skills. 10. Committed to the welfare, wellbeing and best interest of dogs.

State Championships Update: As outlined in the March Journal, the state agility championships will be integrated into the Riverland Trial in August. We are continuing to reﬁne arrangements, and wish to advise that in Trial 6, the Agility and Jumping Finalists will run a different course to the non-qualiﬁers entered into these events. Finalists will run free of entry fee but won’t get a Q card. Finalists can still enter Trial 6 with the other competitors if they so desire and want to compete for a Q card, but that entry would need to be done in the normal way, paid for before the closing date of entries. Full details about how the state champs will be conducted will be published in the June Journal alongside the Riverland Trial advertisement. Jason Schultz

Margaret Bush - Dogs SA Distinguished Service Award Nominated by the Hungarian Vizsla Club of SA and seconded by the Pug Club of SA Margaret Bush was presented on 4th March 2020 at the Dogs SA AGM for her 22 years of service the Dogs SA Distinguished Service Award. Margaret joined Dogs SA in 1998 when she purchased her first pedigree dog, a Hungarian Vizsla. She joined the HVCSA and soon after the GSP Club of SA, despite not yet owning a GSP, but it didn’t take long and she fell in love with the breed. Margaret was also co-opted onto the Gundog Club of SA and served on all 3 committees for several years, especially the GSP Club where she was involved for over 10 years. Margaret has been an avid fundraiser for any club she has been involved in whether it be selling bingo tickets, chocolates, raffles, organising catering for events, wine raffles etc. She was a member of the Dalmatian Club of SA for a few years and with her expertise from assisting with the running of 2 successful GSP nationals in SA helped do the same for the Dalmatian Club. Margaret is in more recent years also a committee member of the Pug Club of SA. Margaret would randomly assist Harry & Val Sass early mornings to make sandwiches in the canteen as it was something she enjoyed doing. When they retired and the canteen became a paid position, she continued to volunteer her time along with working on club fundraising days for all of the above clubs in the canteen. Later when the paid position was vacated, Margaret stepped up and volunteered her service to keep the canteen running and get it back to where it needed to be. Over 10 years later she is still there. Before 2 & 3 day shows she spends many hours ordering and sourcing specials to avoid purchasing at a premium and she collects all the stock herself at her own cost to avoid the association paying for delivery fees and ensuring the profit margins are as high as possible. Margaret would easily give in excess of 35 hours a week voluntarily to the association in order to organise/run a 2/3 day show. On top of canteen duties she also provides a service to clubs to serve the judges lunches, which has a great profit margin for the association. When requested Margaret steps up and organises catering for Dogs SA AGM’s and Judges training evenings including opening the canteen for breed specialty and national shows opening the canteen when required. In 2019 Margaret was awarded the Premiers Certificate for Outstanding Voluntary Service which was presented at the 2019 SA Winter International. Margaret Bush is known by nearly every exhibitor in SA and I am sure that all would agree she is more than worthy of the Dogs SA Distinguished Service Award. Julie Wallis Secretary, HVCSA Page 8

Retrieving news The Come â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;N Try Retrieving was a great success. 12 of the Gundog breeds turned up on the day, totalling 30 plus dogs and some people without dogs including one wanting to train an assistance dog where retrieving items is required. Instructors giving their time so freely were from the Dogs SA RAFT Advisory Panel: Lynette Lennell, Lynne Webster, Ray Ashenden and Graeme Allen, as well as Christine Hayes, a newly appointed judge. The handlers were so enthusiastic that we got together on the Monday Public Holiday for more training! Retrieving & Field Trials Club has organised a Beginners training session on Saturday 9th May at a property at Kuipto, details https://raftcosa.com/ There were some minor changes in the Rules for Retrieving Trials For Gundogs that came into effect as of the 1st January 2020. TRICKS ~ the new Dog sport ~

Trick Dog tests encourage owners and handlers to teach their dogs skills and to display various behaviours in a positive and fun environment. The rules are designed in such a way that handlers and dogs of all abilities can compete on an equal footing. The objective in Trick Dog training and tests is for the dog and handler to perform a selection of tricks, presented with obvious cooperation between a dog that is willing and working well and a supportive handler. Tricks allow us to improve communication and thereby increase our bond with our dogs. This is the introduction from the ANKC Rules for the conduct of Trick Dog Tests. Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1.

I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.

I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)

I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.

I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.

The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime. (01/20) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/ sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20)

I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless speciﬁc permission is given by the SACA.

I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certiﬁcate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certiﬁcates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)
