We come into August in a year that has seen many trials and tribulations, not for just the dog world but SA and Australia as a whole, we have seen drought, fire and a pandemic, what a year. DOGS SA has also come to the end of an era. Wolfgang Schnitzer who has been our Executive Officer for the past 28 years has now retired. I have had the pleasure of working with Wolfgang for the past 17 years as Vice President and now President of DOGS SA. We did not always see eye to eye but always respected the other’s opinion and worked for the betterment of DOGS SA and the members. I wish Wolfgang and Eric all the best in retirement. With the retirement of Wolfgang, Cheryl Currie who has worked in the office for the past 6 years will be covering the function of Executive Officer until the position is permanently filled. The EO position will be openly advertised via the use of AME, a recruitment agency, so if you consider you have the necessary requirements you will be most welcome to apply. As COVID 19 has reduced the workload in the office and this is customarily our quiet time at DOGS SA, the office will be operating one person short until the position is filled. If your puppy registration takes more than the normal processing time please be patient and thankful of the efficiencies we do get from our office as it may take longer. Through July we have seen a glimpse of normality with Conformation Judge’s Training Practical Handling getting underway whilst there are no shows being conducted. These have been very well supported by the members with plenty of dogs to examine for the trainees to get their numbers. A special thankyou to Marie Merchant and the Group Leaders and assessors for making the time to come down as well as to assist in making these events successful. Along with the judge’s training these events also provided an opportunity for the members and their dogs to socialize, something many have missed over the past months. A take away for me was that apart from the showing, many of our members have missed the opportunity to socialize with friends of a common interest. This is even more important at the moment as we all need to care for one another as the result of isolation can be devastating for some. So please if you have a concern about someone visit them or let a close friend know so they can check on them. Along with Conformation many of the other disciplines are getting back into action with Retrieving, Tracking, DWD & Agility underway or keen to get going. DOGS SA is also moving forward with an Open Day in November. The Open Day is being targeted at the general public to highlight the activities being offered by DOGS SA affiliates and the benefits of owning an ANKC pedigree registered pure bred dog. Members without ANKC pedigree registered dogs are still very welcome to attend and show what their dogs are capable of in the Dog Sports world. There will be plenty to offer on the day. More information and flyers will be posted as the date draws closer. As we move deeper into 2020 and yes there is no Royal Adelaide Show to fill September, let’s all remember that COVID 19 has not been defeated and we must all still remain vigilant to ensure SA does not have to endure a second round of the virus. I know we as South Australians also like to hang it on the Victorian’s, now is not the time and we should stay in contact with our friends over the border and show them that we do care about them. I am sure we all have great doggie friends over there.

CANCELLATION OF THE 2020 STATE OBEDIENCE CHAMPIONSHIP TRIALS The Obedience Advisory Committee has very reluctantly made the decision to cancel the State Obedience Championships which were to be held on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September. We had hoped to be able to go ahead with the trials but the continuing issues concerning the COVID-19 virus has brought about this decision. The Committee decided that it was too great a challenge to properly manage the running of the trials within the current safety guidelines and to safeguard the health and well-being of the Judges, Stewards, Competitors and members and officials of the South Australian Obedience Dog Club (who were hosting the event). We sincerely regret any disappointment that may be felt because of this decision, but we have a duty of care that we must take very seriously. The Committee has also made the decision that the annual Top Dog Awards will not be presented for 2020 because of the severely reduced number of trials. All Titles and qualifying scores achieved during the 2020 qualifying period will count towards the 2021 awards.

COVER STORY Wolfgang Schnitzer Executive Officer Dogs SA Wolfgang commenced at Dogs SA in 1991 assisting Margaret Paynter then assuming the role of Executive Officer in 1992. Wolfgang’s personal involvement with dogs began in the 70’s with Dachshund (Standard Smooth), then Dachshund (Standard Long), along with his partner Eric winning the prestigious Dachshund National five times. Over more recent years they also have Pugs & Affenpinschers. He has overseen enormous changes since that time from a manual card registration system to our current national database. Under his guidance Dogs SA has become one of the most efficient offices in Australia. During Wolfgang’s administration incredible improvements were made to David Roche Park, purchased in September 1989 as a basic football and soccer oval complex to the current dedicated facility for Canine exhibitors. He has interacted with many Dogs SA Presidents and Councillors, all of whom have appreciated Wolfgang’s dedication to his role and the progression of the Association. Many members have had contact with Wolfgang to some extent, his obliging demeanour and ability to solve member’s and affiliate’s enquiries promptly with his extensive knowledge of all things canine. From the Council, Staff and members, we wish Wolfgang the very best in his retirement.

ANKC SCENT WORK TRIAL JUDGE Applications are now being called for and to be submitted to the Dogs SA office by 14th August 2020. Training to be conducted by the National Scent Work Working Party. Comment on ANKC Ltd 2019 Registration Statistics We have just released our Registration Statistics for 2019, we take the responsibility for the guardianship of many generations of pedigree dog records very seriously, some records go back well into the last Century, a great benefit for our members it makes the ANKC Ltd Registration Certificate a valuable document much sought after by breeders who do not operate under ANKC Ltd breeding codes. During 2019 we registered 13,933 litters, details of each one was published for public scrutiny. The total registration for 2019 was 66,999 which included 541 imports, this was a reduction of 2,336 from 2018 which ended the continuing growth enjoyed since 2012. Despite a drop in their numbers the Labradors (410) and Staffordshire Bull Terriers (192) have maintained their consistency as the two leading breeds, a decrease of 329 has seen the German Shepherds fall to 6th place, taking their 3rd spot are Golden Retrievers with an increase of 170. The French Bulldog maintained its 4th position with a moderate increase of 45 but are nowhere near the 4,00 plus enjoyed in 2014. The highest increase was achieved by the Border Collies with a jump of 392, other breeds with an increase of over 100 were the Bernese Mountain Dog (165), the German Shepherd Long Stockcoat (142) and the Pembroke Corgi (135). Breeds who had falls over 200 as well as the Labrador and German Shepherd were the American Staffordshire Terrier (290) and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (249). Also registered were Associate Register (325) and Sporting Register (61).

The Limited Register The Limited Register is an important tool for breeders, it was introduced primarily to protect breeders, with established August 2020

bloodlines from commercial dealers, backyard breeders and puppy farmers who were sourcing purebred pedigree breeding stock with ANKC Papers, usually by deception, and either using them in intensive breeding programs or exporting them for prices well in excess of what they had purchased them for, in either case the breeders carefully planned breeding programs were being compromised. Dogs on the Limited Register may not compete in Conformation dog shows, be used for breeding, or exported, but they can compete in Obedience, and other ANKC sports. From time to time the Register is criticised, by people outside the ANKC organisation who infer that there is very little pedigree breeding stock with Main Register Papers available to the general public or to breeders who choose not to be registered with the ANKC or be governed by its strict breeding codes, ethics and regulatory inspections, but who still recognise and seek to take advantage of the commercial value of ANKC Main Register Papers. The 2019 Statistics do not support the claims that the Limited Register facilitates restriction of trade. Of the 66.458 puppies registered 29,651 were on the Main Register, representing 45% of the total registrations, this split fluctuates marginally from year to year, in individual breeds it is a different story, with Limited Registrations ranging between 8% and 79%. Amongst the breeds that have 60% plus limited registered are typically those that figure prominently in “designer dogs”, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, Pugs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. The majority of ANKC Breeders are cognizant that they are the guardians of their breed and are concerned about protecting their breeds from irresponsible breeding – whether by Back Yard Breeders and/or large commercial breeding facilities (puppy farms). The majority of ANKC breeders will not deliberately reduce their gene pool, another accusation which is sometimes levelled against the Limited Register. The Limited Register is increasingly important in the current situation where there has been a surge in those attempting to profiteer from breeding without any regard to responsible breeding practices and the health and welfare of the animals involved ANKC Member Body Dogs Queensland is presently conducting a survey of its members regarding use of the Limited Register. In conclusion, despite the continuing demand for exorbitantly priced Designer Dogs and even more pricey exotics such as Pink Pugs the purebred pedigree dog with ANKC Papers is still the “Real Deal”. AGILITY NEWS The AAC would like to advise that unfortunately there will not be any Agility/ Jumping and Games end of year awards presented for 2020. Obviously, this is due to the limited number of trials that will be available to enter this year. The results from the current year will be combined with 2021 results and the awards presented at the completion of the 2021 trialling year. Also please keep an eye out for the soon to be released online survey looking for feedback from our Agility community on exploring options for the 2021 State Championships. We are certainly aiming to make it an event to remember after the unfortunate turn of events that meant the event wasn’t held in 2020. Jason Schultz


Motivating dogs for DWD (and other dog sports)

Elisabeth Brady Cert IV Dog Behavioural Trainer, Cert IV Veterinary Nurse Having a canine partner who is keen to participate in the sports you love will increase your enjoyment of the sport dramatically. It will also improve the likelihood of success in your chosen sport, and you will be more likely to get the scores and titles you desire! Not all that long ago, we mainly motivated dogs by using a punisher (e.g. slip collar and/or verbal correction) when the dog made a mistake and a reinforcer (e.g. praise or pat) when they performed to the standard we had set. Done well, this got reasonable results, but a dog motivated by fear of correction is unlikely to show the joy many of us love to see in the truly motivated dog. Over time, people have started using more high value reinforcers (food and toys) which, in turn, has produced some highly motivated dogs. The top DWD and obedience competitors in the UK excel at using these reinforcers and the amazing performances we see at Crufts are because of great motivational training.

How do we use reinforcers successfully? There are a lot of competitors using reinforcers very successfully during training but, as soon as the reinforcers are removed in competition, the dog goes on strike! Some common reasons for this are: 1. Incorrect use of reinforcers – they may have been removed too quickly and there has not been a systematic reduction and continuing randomising of these reinforcers prior to competing. In addition, reinforcers are often used to increase motivation in an unmotivated dog, rather than used to maintain motivation. 2. The dog has not been “proofed” in lots of different environments so is finding the competition environment too distracting 3. The handler is nervous and changes the way they give the cues (the dog will also have increased stress because their handler is acting and smelling different than they usually do)

How do we address these shortfalls? 1. Do not be in too much of a hurry to remove reinforcers and do not be in too much of a hurry to compete! a. Get the dog motivated first – then give reinforcers (you can motivate with an excited voice or body movement). b. Learn about the difference between lures and reinforcers – lures appear before the behaviour, reinforcers after. Do not use lures for too long! c. Spend time ensuring that all components of the routine are strong behaviours on their own before trying to put it all together d. Learn how to back chain behaviours to help your dog flow from one move to another and learn to perform several ones they offer when they are not sure what to do) and start to use this as a reward for your dog doing a less favoured move well f. Keep all your training positive and fun g. Gradually ask for more behaviours before you produce your reinforcer – but make that reinforcer is worth working for (the dog will tell you whether it is high value enough) August 2020

h. Once you can get a good 30 seconds or more of high-quality work without using a reinforcer until the end, start to randomise. Your dog will never know how long they need to work for before the high value reinforcer is produced. However, always produce the reinforcer when the dog is performing well; do not produce it if the dog is not doing what you have asked i. At competition, provide lots of reinforcers around the ring (but far enough away to not break the competition rules), both before and after you enter. This is giving the dog a good association with the competition environment. j. At competition, ensure you still produce the reinforcer as soon as you exit the ring. Do not stop to talk to your friends at this time, reinforcing your dog must be your priority. 2. Attend competition environments without having entered. Work your dog around the grounds and use your reinforcers generously (this will help classically condition the dog to really enjoy the competition environments) 3. Every time you compete you will get nervous. However, seasoned competitors will let you know that this lessens as time goes on. Deep breathing and centring yourself prior to entering the ring will help you stay calmer.

What reinforcers should I use? This is a question to ask your dog. However, if you have a toy motivated dog, this is often a more effective way to maintain motivation. Overall, toys increase drive. Although food can be useful for training new behaviours, toys are great as a reinforcer once the dog has learned the behaviours. Tug is a useful game to teach your dog (obviously with rules). There are some great online resources dedicated to helping you teach your dog to play.

Top tips for creating a motivated dog Always remember that what is reinforced will be repeated (this is the laws of learning). If something is not being repeated, there has not been enough reinforcement history •

Learn about dog cognition and what they are and are not capable of. They are not “getting back at you”, being “naughty” or even being “stubborn”. Dogs simply do what works and are not capable of being malicious. This will keep you on the right track to fix the behaviour – your training needs to improve, and blaming the dog will not help you improve your skills • Watch successful competitors train and compete. Observe how they use their reinforcers • Most of all, make sure you are enjoying the training (do not train when you are stressed, tired or grumpy)! This will make it more likely that the dog is enjoying it too.

GUIDELINES FOR THE CONDUCT OF CONFORMATION SHOWS

During the current COVID-19 Pandemic, the following guidelines will operate for the conduct of Conformation Shows in South Australia. Note that these guidelines are in conjunction with the SA Department of Health and other Government Guidelines that are applicable at the time of the Show. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY If you have even mild symptoms, please stay at home, and get tested. If you are a close contact of a person self-isolating, please do not attend the event. • Attendees are encouraged to download the COVIDSafe app onto their Smartphone. • Entries are open to all States SA Health has removed border restrictions from at the time of entries closing. Note should the borders be re-closed after entries close entry fees will not be refunded for interstate exhibits. • As 1,000 people are allowed on the grounds it is unnecessary to restrict entry or visitors. However strict social distancing rules should be followed by all. • Online Entry preferred. • Failure to adhere to any instruction issued by an Official may result in the exhibitor being required to immediately leave the grounds and they may be subject to disciplinary action. • Whilst not required under Stage 3, the marked catalogue, in conjunction with EDE “Exhibitors” spreadsheet, shall serve as a record of attendees for purposes of contact tracing if required. • Whilst not required under Stage 3, the Secretary should note all officials and staff present at the event for the purposes of contact tracing if required. • Paper Catalogues are permitted to be ordered and sold. • Place Ribbons are required as per Dogs SA Rules. • Only normal spacing of Gazebos is required. • Where members of different households share a Gazebo, current social distancing and current meterage density rules apply. Note that the area of a 3m x 3m Gazebo is 9 square metres, whilst a 2.4m x 2.4m Gazebo is 5.74 square metres. • The SA Health recommendations on the COVID Safe Plan read “Consider limiting the duration of any activity to 2 hours or less where possible.” As most Groups are completed within or close to this timeframe, there is no need for Exhibitors to leave the grounds as soon as possible after elimination of competition. However, current Social distancing rules must be maintained. PHYSICAL DISTANCING • Total numbers shall not exceed the SA Government Gazetted COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement Order current at the time of the show. • There shall be no congregating or setting up under the Ring Awnings or Pergola area. • Keep a distance of 1.5 metres between yourself and other people and 1 person per 2 square metres. • Do not shake hands, hug, or kiss as a greeting. • Practise good hygiene by cleaning your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or sanitizer, after visiting a common area, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. • No person shall encroach into the Steward’s designated safety zone.

• Masks may be worn by Officials and Exhibitors - but are not compulsory. • Hand sanitiser or soap and water shall be available for Judges and Stewards. Exhibitors are encouraged to provide their own. • All Venders and Patrons shall adhere to physical distancing rules and maintain COVID-19 safety requirements. • Exhibitors shall avoid touching dogs that are not their responsibility. • Only Handlers of the Breed currently being judged shall be in the judging precinct. If Dogs need to be changed from one class to the next, handlers are to advise the Steward prior to entering the ring for the class prior. Appropriate time must be allowed for changes to occur. The Steward may exercise discretion when no changes are required. At all times appropriate social distancing should be adhered to. • Exhibitors shall enter the ring area via the entrance and depart via the exit maintaining physical distancing at all times whilst in the ring. “IN” and “OUT” signs should be posted, and Stewards advise the exhibitors. • Ring equipment shall be regularly sanitised during the event. • When Group Specials is being judged, the Steward shall remind exhibitors of Social Distancing requirements both when gaiting and stacking. Only Handlers of the Class in Group next to be judged should be in the Assembly area. If Dogs need to be changed from one class to the next, handlers are to advise the Steward prior to entering the ring for the class prior. Appropriate time must be allowed for changes to occur. The Steward may exercise discretion when no changes are required. At all times appropriate social distancing should be adhered to. JUDGING • Judges are permitted to examine dogs in a standard manner as they are not in contact with the exhibitor for longer than 15 minutes. This has been confirmed by the SA Government ORSR COVID-19 Support Team • Judges are encouraged to spend no more than 30 seconds going over an individual exhibit. • Where there is more than one entry in a class, exhibitors must adhere to physical distancing rules. • Judges must maintain good hygiene practices as appropriate whilst judging. • When judging Group Specials, Judges may shortlist the Group. COLLECTION OF NUMBERS, CATALOGUES AND CHALLENGES • The normal Ticket Window can be used with a maximum of 2 people in the Room to maintain appropriate Social distancing at the window. Only 2 lines for exhibitors so Social distancing rules can be maintained between exhibitors. Appropriate signage should be used, i.e. Groups 1-3, 4-7 or similar to assist exhibitors. All Numbers, Catalogues, Challenge Certificates and Ribbons must be handed out by Show officials. • A Catalogue can be provided for Exhibitors use but Hand Sanitiser must be provided along with a sign requesting sanitising must be done before using the catalogue. CLEANING • Cleaning of toilets, wiping down of surfaces and ensuring liquid soap supplies are maintained is the responsibility of the Club holding the show. Stories around the campfire with All Breeds Dog Judge, John Lewington I was in Denver, Colorado in 1995 to judge an Irish Wolfhound show and decided to stay for a week or so with friends. Scot and Cindy lived in a suburb called Avarda along with their Wolfhound called Liam, a pet. One morning Cindy told me she was going shopping in Boulder, a small town about a 45 minute drive towards the mountains and asked me if I would like to go along for the ride. When we arrived in Boulder Cindy told me she was going to visit a number of different shops in the main street, so I said shopping is not really my thing so I will go across the road to a small bar called The Horseshoe and have a quiet beer and she could call in when she had finished her shopping. I entered the bar on the corner of the intersection, it was empty at 11 am in the morning. Just the barman getting things ready for business. I ordered a Budweiser and sat at the bar reading the local paper. A young lady walked in dressed like a hippy, long dress, headband and beads. She sat at the bar next to me and said “Hi, I haven’t seen you in here before”, I explained I was from Australia and was staying in Denver after judging a dog show. I gave her my card with my name and address on it. She told me she had never met a dog judge before and that her name was Willow and she was a poet. She bought me a Budweiser and asked me if I would like to go back to her condominium to read some of her poems. Well I have been around too long for all that, so I politely explained that my friend Cindy would be picking me up in a while so I had to stay in the bar. We sat talking for possibly another hour until my ride home arrived. We said our goodbyes and left. Three months later I received a small parcel in the post. Imagine my surprise when I found a book of poems from Willow Bender, Boulder Colorado. Inside the front cover was a message saying “Hi John and Sue, I hope you remember me saying that I would send you a book. I hope you enjoy it, there are 3 more to follow.” In the table of contents she marked page 16 on which she had written a poem about me! Just goes to show you never know who you are going to meet when you travel the world judging dogs.


CODE OF ETHICS FOR MEMBERS Each Member shall comply with the following Code of Ethics and any Member who fails to do so shall be guilty of an offence against these Rules. As a Member of the South Australian Canine Association: 1.

I shall ensure that at all times all dogs under my control are properly and effectively contained by fencing or enclosure, and are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and given proper Veterinary attention if and when required.

2.

I shall not allow any dogs under my care to roam at large, and, when away from home, ensure they are kept fully leashed and under effective control, or otherwise under effective control at all times. (01/16)

3.

I shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed in line with the breed standard and strive to eliminate hereditary diseases in the breed/s that I produce.

4.

I shall strive to have all my breeding stock tested, where tests are available, for hereditary diseases.

5.

The health and welfare of a bitch being bred from is of paramount importance and I will adhere to the following minimum standards. (01/20) (a) Not allow any bitch owned by me and/or under my control to be mated before she is twelve months of age. (01/20) (b) Breeding - A member shall not breed with a bitch causing it to whelp more than twice in any eighteen (18) period without the prior approval of the SACA. (01/20) (c) Not permit a bitch to have more than five litters in her lifetime. (01/20) (d) Not conduct or permit mother/son, father/daughter or brother/ sister matings. Puppies from such matings will not be registered unless approval from the SACA was provided prior to the mating. SACA will only provide approval where scientifically proven welfare or veterinary reasons exist. (01/20) (e) Not breed a bitch over eight years of age unless at the time of a mating there was a current veterinary certificate stating that the bitch is in good health. The veterinary certificate must be presented at the time of registering the litter resulting from this mating. A current veterinarian certificate is defined as a certificate dated within the three months prior to the mating. (01/20)

I shall not knowingly permit any of my pure bred dogs to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed, or to a dog of the same breed which is entered on the Limited Register, unless specific permission is given by the SACA.

7.

I shall not sell or otherwise transfer from my care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age and thereby allowing for the ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Upon the disposal of the dog I shall provide the owner with a current vaccination certificate of that dog issued by a Veterinary Surgeon. Accepted Veterinarian vaccination certificates are C3 12/36 months, C4, C5 or an annual Titre Test accompanied by a Veterinarian letter. (01/19)

8.

I shall not knowingly sell or otherwise transfer from my care any dog that is not in good health.

9.

I shall ensure that any puppy that is to be exported shall be a minimum of eleven weeks of age and micro-chipped. (01/12)

10. I shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from me clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal as defined in Clause 1 and 2 above. I shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog. I shall provide to all purchasers of dogs or those placed by me, written details of all dietary and vaccination requirements and responsible dog ownership and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements. 11. I shall not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind or to be auctioned. Retrieving news Our first trials week-end of the year was held on 4th and 5th July at Dodd’s lovely property at Meningie. The farmers usually love us to come to Meningie as it generally rains quite heavily from when we arrive and continues until we leave, however, this year there was only a bit of drizzle in the mornings and then fine, but quite cool days. A couple of the game stewards got wet the first morning – I can’t believe that experienced people would go to Meningie and not put their wet weather gear on! A totally South Australian affair as with the borders closed the Victorian contracted Judges couldn’t come and neither could the interstate competitors.

Stakes were judged consecutively enabling every-one to watch what perhaps they wouldn’t normally see at a trial and the Meningie Cup over 4 runs was up first. The newer handlers marvelled at the dog work in that Stake and hopefully that gave them something to aspire to. With the National Championship Retrieving Trial cancelled this year we had a meeting of competitors and RAFT Advisory at Meningie and as there was insufficient interest by those 17 people present we have opted to not hold the National in 2021. We are hoping that the Dogs SA State Championship, sponsored by McMahons Services (who had originally agreed to sponsor the National), will go ahead as revamped on 29th and 30th August in the Riverland. That again, unfortunately, will depend on what’s happening with

our borders. We should be able to get our Queensland judge in, but having a sufficient number of competitors to hold the Championship may be another thing as we rely heavily on the Victorians and New South Wales triallers to make up our numbers. How important is Obedience? by Joe Law — 12 December 2011

I

t is sometimes said that basic obedience training is not all that important when teaching your dog about retrieving. Nothing could be further from the truth! The instinct to retrieve is a natural attribute in many gundogs and while it is desirable to foster retrieving drive in a young dog, care should be taken not to do this at the expense of basic obedience training. If obedience is neglected it will soon result in the breakdown of control, sloppy responses and the formation of bad habits all of which will jeopardise further training. The best natural attributes that a good gundog can show you is a desire to please and a willingness to accept you as its leader. Treasure this in your dog and don’t disappoint by not holding up your side of the deal. Dogs and humans have been able to enjoy a connection from day one so your whole approach should be to enjoy the journey. Obviously, your young dog does not arrive with knowledge of what is expected of him and much of his future behaviour will need to be learnt. Your job is to teach your dog what your expectations are and to be consistent in maintaining these standards. There should be absolutely no need for a trainer to adopt a martinetish and uncompromising approach when in most cases this attitude will only result in a dog becoming fearful and untrusting. Dogs respond well to praise and reward when these methods are combined with good judgement and timing ensuring that only desirable responses are rewarded. A good trainer will be able to maintain an even and consistent approach. Kindness, patience and perseverance are the trademarks of a successful trainer while harshness and punitive measures rarely result in a good outcome. It is most important that as a trainer you get your attitude and approach in order right from the start. For a retriever, a foremost behaviour to be learnt is to come when called and to do this directly and without hesitation. Unless a dog can be recalled promptly and reliably there is little a trainer can do to remedy problems as they occur. The “HERE” or “COME” command must first be taught and consistently enforced. Begin with your dog on lead and only give the command “Here” when you can follow through and make it happen. When you get a good response it is important to remember to reward your dog. A good response would be when the dog comes immediately without having to enforce the response with the lead. Gradually increase the length of lead or rope and use various terrain as your dog improves his response. Several other commands are going to combine with your recall in general usefulness the most obvious being “Sit” and “Stay”. In the early stages of your dog’s training it is important to maintain these basic obedience commands with your dog on a lead until each command is understood and the right response August 2020

has become habitual. It is a common mistake of inexperienced trainers to want to test the dog’s response off lead when there is little chance of success and the training immediately goes backwards. Another experience that can hinder a good recall response occurs when a dog has committed an indiscretion such as chewing on a child’s toy or piece of furniture and is immediately called and then reprimanded or punished. This reaction is likely to confuse the dog and his next response may well be to not come when called. Unfortunately, this same mistake can be carried on in more advanced training situations and should be considered poor training technique. Using praise and reward inappropriately can also be counter-productive resulting in the dog tuning out to the trainer in the belief that nothing matters and anything goes! These dogs can then appear hard-headed and defiant when really the trainer has caused the problem with his or her own inappropriate and badly timed actions. It is of paramount importance that basic obedience commands are understood and an immediate correct response is maintained. Get this right and disobedience will not stand in the way of other more advanced training. A good trainer also knows how to make good things that a dog desires contingent on a proper response. Many have taught their dogs to sit and wait before allowing them eat their dinner making the dinner the reward for sitting and waiting. These dogs learn quickly and none starve to death. If we assume that a dog desires to retrieve then in the same way the retrieve becomes the reward for being steady and waiting to be sent. This is good training but only when any unsteadiness results in the dog not being allowed to retrieve. Before a dog is allowed to retrieve a dog showing any inclination to retrieve without being sent should be kept on a short lead and led away without any opportunity to retrieve. This whole exercise can then be repeated until Bozo shows the required steadiness. Dogs can learn quickly from these situations yet we continue to see chronic breakers being entered in trials. Points are awarded for specific obedience requirements in both Retrieving Trials and Retrieving Ability Tests for gundogs. Furthermore, when dogs run into trouble completing a retrieve in trials the root cause of the problem is often a failure to meet a basic obedience command. A dog that runs out of control when hunting is threat to its own safety and the safety of others. We should never underestimate the importance of basic obedience when training a gundog.
