President’s Report

President’s Report

Welcome again. Who would believe we are already 1 month into 2020. January has been fast paced for the conformation fraternity with a new player entering the arena as Adelaide Dog Show Scene Pty Ltd (ADSS). This has been a bold move by DOGS SA to allow a company the opportunity to conduct shows as an affiliate. Has it worked? Although entries have been low the general vibe around the rings is the additional shows at a time which has been traditionally slow has been welcomed by the majority of exhibitors. This concept is now being looked at by other states. The concept of commercialization is not new with several affiliates already employing conveners to administer their events. There has been some confusion over the payment of the DACO breeder fee. Previously DOGS SA was collecting the fee which is due on 01 July each year with the membership and prefix renewals due 01 January. Many members complained that DOGS SA was collecting the money, banking it and making a large profit with the interest. This was not the case as the interest rate is minimal and did not cover the large cost of administering the collection. DOGS SA and DCMB discussed the matter and decided that it would be best if DOGS SA members paid their Breeder Registration fee at the same time as they paid their dog registration. Hence there is no Breeder Registration fee being paid with your membership renewal but will be included in your dog registration. Positive side to this is that if you are not intending to breed for the year you are not required to pay the Breeder Registration fee. Any issues please come and talk to me. A hot topic at the moment is the decision by both Qantas and Virgin not to accept a number of breeds onto their flights. Their reaction is to an incident which resulted in the unfortunate death of a dog on the tarmac. DOGS SA will be writing to both airlines expressing our concerns over their ban but also to offer assistance in setting training requirements and guidelines for handling and transporting dogs. In the meantime, if you are freighting dogs which are not on the banned list please ensure you follow some commonsense guidelines. Avoid flying your dog where it is to be shipped or trans shipped during the heat of the day. Fly the dog either first thing in the morning or on a night flight. Ensure they have water and lastly, although the requirement for the crate is that the dog must be able to stand and turn, go that one step further and upsize the crate by a size to allow for additional airflow. Remember that yes, the airlines and freight forwarders have a responsibility to your dog but so do you as you are considered the knowledgeable one when it comes to the needs of your dog. I would also like to thank everyone for the support they provided members of not just DOGS SA but also other member bodies during the recent bushfires. It again shows the unity of the dog world in times of need. Now all we need to do is demonstrate this great unity during the rest of the recovery. We are a great organization so let’s promote ourselves this way, particularly on social media. It is our greatest tool and our biggest enemy. Brian Parker – President DOGS SA – 0417 724 223

STATE AGILITY CHAMPIONSHIPS The Dogs SA Agility Advisory Committee wishes to advise the Agility community that our State Agility Championships unfortunately won’t be held in 2020. Realising that the 2020 Agility National in Perth is being held the week prior to the date scheduled for our State Championships and taking a number of factors into consideration the committee regretfully came to to the decision to cancel the next State Championships until 2021. We are already now looking ahead to and planning for the 2021 event with an aim to making the State Championships bigger and better than ever before. Thank you for your support and understanding. OBEDIENCE ADVISORY REPORT AGILITY ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2019

FOR 2019

It has been another busy year for the Obedience Advisory Committee and I would like to thank Neil MacDonald, Jeff Hartshorne, Tash Davis and Wendy Adams for their support this year.

This year has been full of highs and lows. The lows are the sadness you feel when so many of our fellow Agility people have lost their furry mates. Some have been lost naturally and some tragically. I wish all of them a happy crossing of the rainbow bridge.

Thank you to Wolfgang, Ann, Cheryl and Hayley in the Dogs SA Office for their valuable assistance. Thanks also to Lynn Fielden for her work as our Registrar as well as for looking after the administrative duties for the State Championship trials along with her assistant Shona Willson. Our State Championship trials were again very successful. Congratulations to all State Champions in both Obedience and Rally. The OAC would like to thank South Australian Obedience Dog Club and their members for their continued support of the event as well as everyone else who helped out over that weekend judging, stewarding and helping set out and pack up equipment. Your assistance was very much appreciated. Many thanks also to our sponsors of the event, Laucke Mills, Petstock and Natures Step wines. During the year we had a series of meetings to formulate our submissions to the 5 yearly Obedience Rules review. As a result, we have put forward a number of suggestions as to how we can improve both traditional Obedience and Rally trials. We will be having meetings in January to discuss the proposals submitted by the other States with a view to arriving at a consensus on which proposals we should support at the National Conference in March. The OAC would like to thank everyone who contributed to this process. Congratulations to the all the winners of our Annual Awards for 2019. The major award winners were: Top Obedience Dog – John Fickling & OC Harvellie Sweet Delights Top Country Obedience Dog – Andrena Fridd & Malibumarley UD RM Top Rally Dog – Alexa McKenzie & SUP CH Cambrae Hit The Jackpot CDX RM RAE Top Country Rally Dog – Kay Richardson & DUAL CH Tookurra Sassy N Single CDX RAE GD SD There has been some commentary of late about the entry numbers in Obedience Trials, not all of it accurate. This year the average number of entries in Obedience Trials, not including restricted and country trials, was 58, compared with 47 in 2018, which is a very good sign. The Rally numbers declined a little, but it is apparent that traditional Obedience doing OK. What we do need to look at, however, is the scheduling of trials. During this year there was a two month gap between Obedience Trials in the metropolitan area, due to clubs scheduling Rally trials in preference to Obedience Trials. This issue was discussed at a recent meeting of Trial Secretaries and Managers and some suggestions made as to how the trial program can be made more equitable. In closing, on behalf of the Committee I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and holiday period and every success for 2020. Brian Fielder Chair, Obedience Advisory Committee February 2020

Whilst on this particular theme, we all sadly miss our friend and compatriot Geoff Sykes. You left a massive hole and we think of you fondly on a regular basis. This year we only had the one trainee judge – Rachael Fagan and we congratulate her on passing her Jumping exams. We would like to thank the Clubs that allowed Rachael to practice on their training nights, they being ADCSA, Gawler, Munno Para and Para Districts and to Gawler for the use of their grounds and equipment for the practical exam. It is important to understand that without these Clubs allowing the use of their facilities the practical training would be extremely difficult. This year the AAC experimented with a change of date and venue for the 2019 State Agility Championships and held the State Championships at the Riverland Dog Training grounds. From the ability to camp on the grounds to the local hospitality and extra qualifiers on offer the event received positive feedback. From the AAC perspective the event was a success albeit not so financially. It is with some regret that I advise you that two members of the 2019 Committee will not be on the Committee in 2020. Firstly, Julie Lyon who has been a dedicated and fantastic Secretary since she stepped onto the AAC, she will be greatly missed and secondly, the workhorse Lindsey Newton. Lindsey has transported the Timing Gear to virtually every Trial in SA for years. Thank you both for your hard work and dedication. Also thanks to the remainder of the AAC who have worked tirelessly on your behalf and especially for their efforts in the planning of the 2019 State Championships. Thanks also go to the Office Staff, Wolfgang, Ann, Cheryl and Hayley for their continued assistance and advice throughout the year. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New year. Peter Dynan

RAFT ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2019

Firstly I’d like to thank Dogs SA for the invitation to remain as Chair for 2020. I’d also like to thank my fellow advisory committee members for their continued support this year. It hasn’t been an easy year for some of us either having health issues or partners/friends passing away. I hope 2020 brings a more positive turn of events for everybody. Trials were well supported this year particularly in Novice and All Age, however on some occasions Restricted trials had to be cancelled due to insufficient entries. The advisory committee have been busy forming a National Committee led by Ray Ashenden in preparation for the 2020 National Retrieving trial to be held in the Riverland area of Cobdogla on the 28-30th August. The State Championship will Page 13

be held on the 22/23rd and RAFTCOSA will be holding a lead up trial on the 15/16th August. I’d like to encourage everybody to get involved in any way they can to help make these events a success. Congratulations to our newly appointed Novice judge Christine Hayes and to Julie Kradolfer for applying to train as a Novice judge next year. Jeff Patrick has arranged several judges training days and I’d encourage all judges to attend. Retrieving Rules review have been discussed earlier this year and we are currently waiting for the ANKC board to approve these changes and they will be on the ANKC website once approved. Please make sure you take the time to understand the rule changes. All the best for the coming months and I look forward to seeing you all next year. Regards Lynette Lennell Chair Dogs SA RAFT advisory committee.

TRACKING ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2019

2019 saw the new Rules come into force that separated Tracking and Track and Search into two separate disciplines. As mentioned in my 2018 report this meant that no longer did a dog have to have a Tracking Champion Title to attempt Track and Search. This year saw several dogs successfully compete concurrently in both sports, that would not have previously been qualified to enter Track & Search Trials. This led to a very large increase in the number of dogs trialling in Track and Search with three out of four TSD trials having entries in excess of 20. There were 11 dogs awarded TSD titles, 2 TSDX, 2 TS Champions and 1 TS Grand Champion at trials held in South Australia. The TS Gr Champion was Tri Neut Ch (T) (TS) TS Grand Ch Mylab Carla RA FS.N HTM.S a Labrador Retriever owned and handled by Christine Hayes. The TS Champions were, Tri Neut Ch (T) (TS) Mylab Carla RA. FS.N. HTM.S a Labrador Retriever owned and handled by Christine Hayes and Tri Ch (T) (TS) & Neut Ch Blakesims Stop Me CCD RA a Rottweiler owned and handled by Narelle Medlicott. Congratulations to both these dogs and their handlers. As Track and Search is now completely urban this has enabled other interested clubs to consider holding trials, additional to the two the trials held by the TDC of SA Inc., and the Trial held by the Tracking Advisory Committee. The Rottweiler Club of SA Inc., was the first to be approved and held a very successful trial. They are to be congratulated on the manner in which they ran their inaugural trial. In addition to the TSD trials held by the TDC of SA Inc., they held six Tracking Trials (rural) in the Monarto area. Luckily none had to be cancelled because of unsuitable conditions this year, although it was a close-run thing, with the rain coming just in time for the first rural trial. These trials were very successful, resulting in 11 TD titles, 9 TDX titles and 10 Tracking Champion titles in 2019. The Tracking Champions for 2019 were T Ch Izzi CCD RN JD GD ET a Dalmatian owned and handled by Sharon Gahan, Page 14

Congratulations to All these dogs and their handlers. It is great to see such a wide variety of dogs trialling in Tracking and Track and Search trials ranging from a Tenterfield Terrier thru to a Bernese Mountain Dog and also a number of Associate register dogs. A grand total of 46 titles over the two disciplines were awarded in SA trials in 2019, which is to be celebrated. 2019 did not see any increase in the number of Tracking Judges. In Track and Search, Nick West successfully passed his written and practical examinations and was added to the ANKC Judges list for Track & Search. Congratulations to Nick. Hopefully we may have some members aspiring to either or both disciplines as trainees in 2020. The season did see several new people put up their hands to assist as stewards/tracklayers etc., at trials which is always very useful as no helpers, no trials. Thank you to my 2019 Committee of Sheila Smith, Ian Murrell, Nid Watt and Karron Jordan and thank you to all the staff at Dogs SA for their wonderful efficiency. Josie Miller

EARTHDOG ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2019

The Earthdog 2019 Season showed an increase in entries from 2018, being only 7 short of the high of 195 entries achieved in 2017. This increase was driven by the introduction of the Strong Dog class in Tests for the first time. Breeds that competed this year were Australian, Border, Jack Russell, Parson Russell and West Highland White Terriers as well as the Dachshund Miniature Wire-Haired. I offer a sincere thank you to our Advisory Committee of Christine Koch, Pam Smith, Clynton Whalan and Tegan Whalan, all of who have agreed to re-nominate for Committee in 2020. I wish to draw the attention the service, time and effort that these people have dedicated to the planning & holding of both the training day and Tests. Financially, the Committee’s costs exceeded its revenue by approximately $300 for the full 2019 year and this will reduce its previous surplus to approximately $4,000. I have drafted a detailed Financial Report, which has been distributed to the meeting, but overall revenue and expenses were close to those budgeted. The main variance was in qualifying and title ribbon purchases, but we have now a reasonable stock in hand and so therefore expect to save against this line item in 2020.

In regards Tests, over the period May to August this year the Terrier Club of SA held 2 Double tests and the Advisory Committee held 2 double Tests and 2 triple Tests. This gave the sport a total of 14 Tests, the same number as in 2018. These Tests resulted in 188 entries, of which the Advisory Committee had 140. Total entries were up by 33 from the 155 of 2018. In 2020 it is anticipated that the Terrier Club of SA will hold both a Double and a Triple test, increasing their involvement by holding 5 tests out of the annual 14 Tests. In regards entries however, if the Classes are compared on a like-for-like basis, there was a decline of 23 entries in 2019 when compared to 2018 for Instinct, Junior, Senior and Master classes, which was offset by 56 entries for the newly introduced class of Strong Dog in this State. For the non-Strong Dog Classes of Instinct, Junior, Senior & Master 38 qualification scores were achieved, i.e. 29% qualification rate, lower than the 34% average rate achieved for the previous 5 years. While in 2019 no Champion Titles were achieved, the qualifications did lead to 8 titles being gained, compared to 12 in 2018. Congratulations to all the competitors who gained titles! The Class of Strong Dog presents a challenge to the sport. Whilst proving a popular class in terms of entries, where the traditional classes have an average qualification rate of 33%, in Strong Dog only 2 qualifications were achieved out of 56 entries, or a rate of only 4%. If the ability to pass is almost out of reach not only will the strong interest wane, but also must in some way call into question the conditions and rules of the class. Communications with interstate shows the class in not often run and when run pass rates vary considerably. The main difficulties are in the dogs not getting the quarry past the second turn in the tunnels and/or dogs are wasting both time and energy in attempting to deconstruct the weighted quarry whist inside the tunnels. Further trials will be undertaken in 2020 in how best to construct the weighted quarry and the lessons learned from this year and next season will support the drafting of proposals for the next Earthdog Rules Review at the end of 2020. Thanks again must go to our local judges, including Kerryn Pearson and Tegan Whalan as well as our ever-reliable Test Secretary Pam Smith. I am also pleased to advise that Christine Koch has successfully gained her Judge’s Licence at the end of this year, helping to ensure the sport can operate into the future. In addition, a special thank you must go to our interstate judge Virginia Gollan (NSW) as her support was very much appreciated. I continue to be impressed how generous interstate officials are in promoting & supporting the sport. Without all these roles there would of course be no sport. Thanks also must go to all helpers, competitors and of course the Terriers & Dachshunds themselves. Good luck everyone in 2020! Daniel McLoughlin Chairman EAC

DANCES WITH DOGS ADVISORY REPORT FOR 2019 Competitions This was another very active year for devotees of this unique sport. The DWD Club of SA produced 6 Competitions, Gawler Obedience Club 3, and one by the Riverland Obedience Club. February 2020

Entries in Competitions hovered around the 20 mark across the 10 competitions held this year These events would not have been possible without a lot of hard work by a small number of people. Committee Members of the DWD Club have endeavoured to ensure this fun sport continues to grow. This Club provides Training at two locations: Monday mornings fortnightly, with occasional evening Workshops at David Roche Park: and some Saturday morning sessions at St Brigid’s Church Hall, Kilburn. In addition, Gawler Dog Obedience Club continues to provide regular training in DWD as does Noarlunga Obedience Club The perennial problem of finding an affordable, suitable, indoor venue that allows dogs for Competitions, has been partially solved. However, it is located at Two Wells, which means a long haul for competitors living south of the city and its availability on weekends is limited. Preparing the venue for a dog event of this kind: setting up furniture, equipment, sound system, scoring system and the ring, plus laying 500 floor tiles every time: and putting everything away afterwards, does make this very labourintensive for a small discipline. In response to DogsSA President’s request for suggestions to make DogsSA more relevant and attractive to members who have interests beyond Conformation, a proposal is being developed to present to Council regarding use of the SACA Hall for workshops and competitions. Several DWD Demonstrations at public events this year continue to entertain the crowds that gather to watch: and at the same time provides a platform to promote DogsSA. There was general disappointment all round with a DWD Competition not being included on the Royal Show Programme again this year. However, an approach to the Royal Show Dog Committee has been favourably received and is being considered for next year. DWD Judges One new Judge successfully completed her training and exam. We congratulate Elaine Kennedy and welcome her on the DWD Judges List. She replaces one judges unable to renew her licence, hence the number remains at 10. Judges Training Sessions have been well-attended, as judges continue to upskill their abilities to keep pace with growing improvements by competitors. The AC makes a special point of thanking Jenny Mc Loughlin and Jean Milnes for undertaking the task of training aspiring judges. Trick Dog Tests The big news is the arrival of Trick Dog Tests on the SA canine scene. Much work has been undertaken by the DWD National Working Party to bring this newly created sport to fruition: which will become official on 1st January, 2020. Training of foundation Tricks Judges has commenced with a view to hold exams early 2020. In addition, 16 Instructors representing 6 Dog Obedience Clubs attended a special session on how to train their members in Tricks. This most informative session was conducted by Lynne Staplyton, Denise Adams and Elaine Kenned. As a result, it is anticipated that Tricks will become incorporated into training programmes conducted by a number of affiliated Obedience Clubs. Several “Come ‘n’ Try Tricks” and mock tests have been held. Page 15

In June, Jill and Amanda Houston from WA, conducted an Introduction to Tricks Workshop, which served to further spark interest in the sport here in SA. The Advisory Committee and Gawler Dog Club held several Introduction to Tricks and “Come ‘N’ Try” Sessions which have been very well attended. The DWD Club is conducting classes in Tricks on Thursday evenings at David Roche Park. Gawler Dog Obedience conducts weekly classes in DWD and Tricks. This new sport is attracting considerable interest among members of DogsSA, and like DWD, is attracting new people. We are indebted to Lynne Staplyton for the energetic and competent assistance she is giving to the Advisory Committee in the training of foundation Tricks’ judges and general development of Trick Dog Tests in South Australia. Her support and input is invaluable. Work has commenced on producing an updated version of the DWD component of DogsSA website, which will also include information on Tricks. I stress that without the assistance we have received from nonAC members, the DWD Advisory would not be able to meet its full responsibility in furthering the development of DWD, including Tricks, in SA. In closing I thank members of the 2019 Advisory Committee for their support; Maryka Spurling-Janes, Rae Hedger, Tegan Whalan, and in particular Andi Sutherland, for their work and solid support throughout the year. Together with members of the Advisory Committee for 2020, I look forward to another productive and exciting year ahead. Margaret Bourn Chair, DWD Advisory Committee.

‘OUR DOGS HAVE NEVER LOOKED BETTER, THE RESULTS FROM FEEDING ROYAL CANIN SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES’ Shortblak Scottish Terriers have been breeding Scottish Terriers for over 6 years, to which they have bred Australia’s No1 Scottish Terrier - 2014, ’15, ’16, ’17, 19. ‘Our dogs can be fussy eaters but always empty bowls on Royal Canin as they clearly find it very palatable. Scottish Terriers being a coated breed, coat and skin condition is very important, conditioned on Show Beauty our Scotties coats have been never better. Being terriers Scotties are always on the move but they never lose condition’ Stacey Sullivan from Shortblak Scottish Terriers says. ‘All our babies are given the right start in life with the Royal Canin Starter Mousse and they always absolutely thrive on this food growing into strong healthy puppies’.
