Retrieving Drive for Gundogs by Joe Law - 4 May 2010 If you want to get started with your Gundog in Retrieving Trials or Retrieving Ability Tests you’ll need a dog with good retrieving drive. This may seem obvious, but we’re looking for a dog that will go out hard to retrieve and come back just as hard. Retrieving has to be the dog’s total focus. You don’t want a dog that strolls out or back with the retrieve. Nor do you want a dog that finds but deliberately passes by the game: this is referred to as “blinking”. Another fault is a dog that hunts an area that it has already worked or sniffs around other scents: this is called “pottering”. So how do we build the retrieving drive in a dog so that it goes out swiftly, with purpose and enthusiasm? Firstly, let’s look at a young pup that you are starting out with around 8- 10 weeks of age. In most Gundogs the retrieving instinct should be there in the dog and we want to bring this out so that the dog grows to love retrieving. This is his purpose. Just get the young pup by your side, sitting or standing, and get an object to throw. Retrieving on flat grass at the beginning is best as pup can see what’s going on; it’s not about scenting at this stage. Make sure he sees it in your hand. Wave it under his nose if you like. Throw it out in front and the little guy should take off after it. Use the word fetch and as you repeat this over the coming weeks he’ll quickly learn what this means. Don’t worry about the other obedience commands at this very early stage. He doesn’t have to sit and stay or even heel by your side. The idea is to have fun and get him mad keen to go after the retrieve. The obedience can be put in over the top later, once we are building the drive. When your pup has picked up the item he may just come running back to you. If not, call him. Move backwards or even run away to get him to follow you. As he comes in to you, take the item and say “give”. What to get your pup to retrieve? It could be almost anything. A puppy size retrieving dummy or rolled up socks (the ones you have worn all day should be especially nice) are useful. You may use an old slipper or thong. Be careful with the last two as your dog may end up carrying your shoes around all the time (chewing on them?). I don’t recommend using sticks as when the dog is out working at a retrieving trial but can’t find their retrieve it may find a stick and think that will do. As your pup grows retrieving dummies can be used and distances can be gradually increased. At this stage try to get someone out in front to throw the retrieve item. Let your June 2020

young dog see clearly what is going on and use a “watch”, “mark” or similar command. He should be going out and back fast by now. If you have an adult gundog that hasn’t had the retrieving drive brought out, it’s best to start in a similar manner as you would with a pup. Don’t worry too much with “heel”, “sit”, “stay”. Get his interest. Throw fun retrieves. Swing a retrieving dummy around until he really wants it, throw it and let him go. Use a fun up beat command like “hup hup”. Bring the obedience control over your dog after he is going out hard. It’s all about bringing out the natural retrieving instinct in your Gundog, and the drive to retrieve. Your dog will want to do it. And he’ll thank you for it. After all, this is what he was born to do! Reprinted from Retrieving Australia website http://retrieving. org.au/index.html Page 9

The Pre 1987 British Bulldog Standard – why did the ANKC Amend it? Recently there has been a great deal of comment on Facebook, regarding the decision by the ANKC to amend the British Bulldog Breed Standard, much has been made of what was done, without any mention of why it was done, the ANKC Directors believe that both sides of the story need to be told. Until 1992, it was ANKC policy to adopt only The Kennel Club (England) Standards. Around 1987, the Kennel Club (England) urged all English Breed Clubs to revise their Standards, this was completed around 1994. Due to Breed Clubs and breeders/owners in Australia disagreeing with many of the revised Standards, the ANKC agreed to allow Breed Clubs and/or owners, where there were no breed clubs. to choose between the Pre-1987 Standard, the revised Kennel Club Standard, the FCI Standard or the Country of Origin/Development Standard. The process to choose one of the above standards, the Breed Clubs, and owners where there were no breed clubs were required to conduct a survey of all registered owners of each breed, these results were then ratified at the May 1998 ANKC Conference, arising from the surveys a number of breeds, including the British Bulldog opted to retain the Pre 1987 Standard. In the UK in 2008 the BBC aired a documentary “Pedigree Dogs Exposed”, it was a hard hitting expose of congenital defects in pedigree dogs, some of which were allegedly caused by poor breeding practices associated with exaggerations required in Breed Standards, one of the outcomes of the documentary was that during 2009 the Kennel Club held a comprehensive review, conducted in conjunction with a large body of experts, including vets, to ensure that they encouraged the breeding of healthy dogs. In this review every Breed Standard was rewritten to make it explicitly clear that the process of exaggerating features because they are seen to look good, when this at the expense of the dog’s health, was not in any way acceptable. Following the UK review, a recommendation from the ANKC Breed Standards Committee, that the ANKC cancel the current ANKC Policy of allowing breeds to adopt the Pre 1897 Kennel Club (England) Standards, and for the ANKC to adopt the current standard from the Kennel Club (England) or from the Country of Origin/Development, was endorsed by the Delegates to the October 2009 Conference, however after submissions from Breed Councils, the 2010 Conference resolved that no action be taken to implement the action from the 2009 Conference in relation to the Pre 1987 Breed Standard. In 2009, “Pedigree Dogs Exposed” was broadcast in Australia as part of the ABC “Catalyst” Program, thanks to pre-work by the ANKC with the AVA and RSPCA, who were provided with information on health testing programs adopted by a large number of breeds, the impact was not as great as it had been in the UK, however a focus in the “Catalyst” program was on the British Bulldog, in particular the words in the Standard that

Page 10

required the head to be strikingly massive and large in proportion to the dog’s size, and the skull to be very large - the larger the better, and that most British Bulldog Bitches were unable to whelp naturally due to the size of puppies heads. This was the start of concerted efforts by parties such as, the RSPCA, the AVA and the ABC the vehicle for prosecuting the case attacking brachycephalic breeders, without input from the National British Bulldog Breed Council (NBBC) , ANKC found great difficulty in counteracting the criticism of over exaggeration in the breed standard, when engaging with aggressive interviewers who were aware of the changes to the standard made by the Kennel Club (UK), and who could not understand why Australian British Bulldog Breeders would not follow the actions of the country that was considered the home of the British Bulldog and where it was developed. In a follow up article to “Pedigree Dogs Exposed” in the Sydney Morning Herald in December 2009, Assoc Professor Paul McGreevy from Sydney University commented that with many judges and breeders, asking them to change breed standards is like asking them to rob a granny. From this time forward the ANKC was continually under attack, by the AVA, RSPCA, ABC and Academics from the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Sydney University, and individual Veterinarians. The main objective of these campaigns was to get ANKC to modify words contained in the British Bulldog Breed Standard head and skull description, such as “the head strikingly massive and large in proportion to the dog’s size, the face extremely short, the skull should be very large - the larger the better”. The crusade against breed standard exaggerations was ramped up in 2016, with the Australia wide release of the “Love is Blind” video, promoted as an animal health and welfare campaign between the Australian Veterinary Association and the RSPCA, to raise awareness of the problems caused by exaggerated physical features, such as brachycephaly, short limbs and excessive skin wrinkling, and calling for a fundamental shift in the way purebred dogs are selected and bred in Australia. After the “Love is Blind Campaign”, the call for change in breed standards was joined by Academics from Sydney University Veterinary Science Faculty, Professors Nicholas and McGreevy who challenged ANKC to respond to such media statements as: “In some cases, traits that are best regarded as defects, have actually been included in breed standards, e.g. brachycephaly in the British Bulldog. Breeders compete with one another to see how well they can produce phenotypes that conform to a written standard, including traits that have, at best, questionable welfare benefits. The British Bulldog is required to have a curved ‘roach’ back, it is therefore not surprising that British Bulldogs are sometimes born with twisted spines, i.e. hemivertebrae. For the British Bulldog, the skull should be very large,

the larger the better’ (Pre-1987 Kennel Club, London). This is a breed in which, large foetal head size commonly leads to dystocia (difficulties in birthing)”. Professor Nicholas also wrote: “Of course, many of the members and governance personnel of Kennel Clubs are pedigree dog breeders. It is right therefore to pause and consider the extent to which welfare may have become subordinated to certain breed practices. It is not difficult to see how, after generations of owners have spent years focusing on the morphology of their dogs, some find it hard to see the proverbial wood for the trees. Breed standards can easily become entrenched in the minds of breeders, buyers and fanciers, as well as those (often interested parties) who are involved in the judging (and so promotion) of a breed and its ‘established’ characteristics”. Until 2014 the ANKC had been meeting, on a regular basis, with the RSPCA National Office regarding health issues in pedigree dogs, despite being presented with overwhelming evidence, that many breeds had introduced health screening programs to reduce the incidence of known inherited health conditions, the RSPCA would not back away from their position that ANKC should remove breeding exaggerations required in Breed Standards, including of course the British Bulldog, as this issue dominated every meeting and, as ANKC was unable to provide a logical answer as to why British Bulldog Breeders would not agree to Standard changes, we terminated the meetings. Faced with continuing criticism for indecision in addressing exaggerations in the British Bulldog Standard, and with no positive information to address the adverse commentary, the ANKC Directors felt that they had no alternative but to take action to resolve the situation. Subsequently, the ANKC wrote to the NBBC suggesting changes to modify the exaggerations in the head and skull description, the suggestions were rejected, later ANKC Directors were informed, by some British Bulldog owners, that they had not been consulted on the proposed changes to the head description. In December 2017 the Board wrote to the NBBC, expressing their disappointment at the decision not to endorse the head changes, and as a result asked them to provide a rationale, as to why, they should be allowed to retain the Pre-1987 Standard with the head and skull exaggerations that were the cause of continuing censure, in April 2018 the Council replied with a series of statements, which the Board did not consider provided a rationale that could support the retention of the Pre 1987 Standard, and satisfactorily address the ani-brachycephalic campaigns. In December 2018, the NBBC wrote to the ANKC with a proposal for a National Health Scheme, the ANKC Health and Wellbeing Committee considered that although the proposal was a promising start to control health issues with the British Bulldog, it did not address the concerns that had been raised in regard to the exaggerated head and skull descriptions, but agreed that if the NBBC wished to proceed to implement this scheme, they should do so under their own umbrella. In view of this initiative, the Board resolved to delay any further action on Standard alterations until the scheme was in progress. At the October 2019 ANKC Board meeting, it was reported to the Directors, that the proposed National Health Scheme had not gone ahead, coupled with the Boards determination that the statements made by the NBBC, in April 2018 for retaining the Pre-1987 Standard,

June 2020

did not answer the December 2017 request for a rationale, it was resolved to give the NBBC a choice of adopting the Kennel Club (UK) current breed standard or the amended Pre 1987 breed standard, as proposed by the ANKC Board of Directors. At the February 2020 ANKC Board Meeting, after reviewing the response from the NBBC, the Directors agreed, that the Council had still not addressed whether they wanted to adopt the Kennel Club (UK) current breed standard or the proposed amended Pre 1987 standard, and resolved to implement the amended Pre 1987 standard. The NBBC have written to all Breed Councils seeking support for an approach to the ANKC to rescind the decision, as the NBBC have indicated that they are seeking legal advice, ANKC will only comment on why the amendments were made, and wish to restate that the changes were made solely due to health concerns within the breed, and to meet its obligation under ANKC Objective (e) “to promote the health and welfare of Canis Familiaris”, and to demonstrate, that the ANKC Ltd has taken seriously, the global commentary on health problems associated with the exaggerated requirements in the Pre 1987 British Bulldog Standard. It is now 30 years, since the NBBC opted to retain that Standard rather than adopt the revised Kennel Club Standard, over those years there have been huge advances in research into morphological exaggerations in canines, and the British Bulldog has been a main focus of these studies, the consensus of the scientists is, that problems in the British Bulldog are directly related to the standard for the breed, and this has been adopted as the mantra for those who seek to alter or even ban the breed. In coming to its decision, the Board took into consideration, that Veterinary research has identified that the shorter the face the more changes occur within the nasal cavity with septal deviations, stenosis within the nasal cavity as well as just the nares, elongation of the soft palate .... to mention the main ones, added to that within the British Bulldog is a narrowing of the trachea that is seen, and can considerably affect breathing. The width of the neck can be fairly directly linked to the size of the head, so asking for a relatively large head, rather than one that is as large as possible, is common sense and moving in the right direction. ANKC has invited the NBBC to work with the ANKC Health and Wellbeing Committee to institute health programs that will demonstrate that Australian Breeders are working to improve the health of the British Bulldog, who remains hugely popular, as a family companion for his great character and loyalty, the fact that the breed is so popular makes it all the more important that we find ways to improve and protect its health as a priority. ANKC want to see the breed prosper and develop, rather than seeing it banned in its entirety, which is still on the global agenda of many Veterinarians and Animal Rights Organisations who masquerade as Animal Welfare Societies. In conclusion, after 12 years of attempting to defend the indefensible exaggerations in the Pre 1987 British Bulldog Standard, and 3 years of unproductive consultations with the National British Bulldog Council, to ensure improvement in the health and the future of the British Bulldog in Australia, the ANKC Board of Directors had no alternative but to modify the exaggerations in the Pre 1987 Standard. Kennel Blindness …a common disease ~ By Narelle Hammond ~

“For breeders to be successful, they must look at their dogs ….not only in the face, but in the body, front and running gear. Even to themselves many breeders will not acknowledge their failure when they fall short of their objective...and to convince others of the perfection of their dogs, they convince...usually only themselves”. From The New Art of Breeding Better Dogs by K. Onstott

having read and studied their breed standard, they are incapable of correctly evaluating structure and movement. Of more serious concern are the breeders that have never read their breed’s breed standard or novice breeders who are strongly affected by a dog’s temperament and personality and other breeders who just simply do not have an “eye” for a dog.

Only the most foolish buffoon would dare to suggest that their dog was fault free. Even though we are in a modern, high-tech era, this affliction remains as prevalent as ever and there seems to be no immunization for this dreaded disease. Kennel blindness IS a “disease” and statistically found in about 80% of breeding kennels, which renders a breeder incapable of seeing faults in their own dogs.

Many kennel blind people think all puppies are cute. These owners usually decide to breed their dog, not to improve the breed, but because they love his personality and want more puppies just like the sire and dam. How often do we hear from kennel blind breeders, “All the pups are show quality”. Even if the litter has not been born!!!

Kennel blind breeders tend to twist and distort the standard to justify the dogs they breed. They fit the breed standard to the dogs in their kennels. Whereas the correct way is to fit the dog to the breed standard. Because serious faults can become set in a couple of generations, unless it is quickly diagnosed and treated, kennel blindness can be fatal to a successful breeding program. One of the major problems with “kennel blindness” is the breeder’s inability to see and appreciate the good qualities in another breeder’s dogs and tend to focus on negative features of dogs other than their own. To combat kennel blindness, you need to read, understand, re-read and understand your breed’s standard. This must be done on a regular basis, keeping in mind that most standards depict the essential aspects of a breed, therefore allowing breeders the freedom to express their own concepts of the non-essentials. In this way a range of excellence may be produced in a breed without sacrificing each dog’s ability to fit into the standard. No “perfect” dog has ever or will ever be bred in any breed. Even your best can always be improved upon. It is important to realize that the concept of what you think is ideal may change. Experience with a breed may gradually change the priority a breeder gives to certain features. A stickler for correct heads may gradually start emphasizing on angulation and movement, realizing that the latter are also essential aspects of the breed. Kennel blind people always have an excuse for why their dog doesn’t win. While some of their reasoning may be legitimate, consistently losing under a variety of judges usually means a dog does not fit the breed standard in one or more important aspects. Blaming the fact that your dog is not winning on bad judging, politics or whatever is time wasting. You need to except the possibility that there may be something wrong with your dog. If your dog is not winning, ask several knowledgeable people to evaluate your dog. These breeders and/or judges do not necessarily have to be in your breed. Tell them to be honest and you must listen with an open mind. Some breeders are simply not born with an “eye” for a dog. Despite June 2020

Another scenario is breeders who have produced quality animals in the past but are now struggling to stay on top. There are also many successful breeders who have had past super stars and are now looking for their next big winner. They may be more prone to over-looking faults in their own dogs. Breeders working with a small gene pool as they are not prepared to look outside their own kennels, or they use the closest and handiest dog to where they live. They tend to not want to open their eyes to problems in their breeding program. Then you have breeders whose every waking moment revolves around dogs, making dogs a “live or die” situation. This can affect objectivity. Breeders who are not “kennel blind” are objective and rarely satisfied with their own dogs, criticizing them more harshly than others would. They also thoroughly understand their breed standard and can discuss the pros and cons of their dogs objectively. Regardless of time and effort already spent, they are also ready to remove from their breeding program dogs that do not pan out, even to the point of starting over with new foundation stock. They also have an “eye” for a dog and can appreciate a good one regardless of who bred or owns it. If caught in time, kennel blindness can be cured before it has a lasting, detrimental effect on their breeding program, so it is important to look at the following tips. Avoid over-emphasizing a certain feature in the breeding program to the detriment of overall correctness. Although most breeders try to emphasize the excellence of the whole dog, it is human nature to over-emphasize certain features. In fact, the importance we give to a particular trait in our dogs is how we express our “breeding personality” and create what we feel comes close to our ideal. One breeder may be a stickler for fronts and another for toplines. The danger here is that by focusing on just one feature they can become “blind” to other faults that may be creeping into their breeding program. To assess your kennel blindness level, ask someone whose opinion you respect to objectively evaluate your dogs. Page 13

With health problems my partner Kerry does the handling these days ably assisted by close friends. Do you have a funny story? All of my funny stories would involve other people…. They could be libellous.

Geoffrey Maudlen Year obtained All Breed Status 2004 Current Breed/s – Saluki Breed/s you have owned? – Irish Setters, Pointers, Cocker Spaniel (American), Boston Terrier Have you competed in any other canine disciplines? – Pointer and Setter Field Trials / Lure Coursing What Breed do you love to judge but have never owned? – There is no particular breed that stands out but I do enjoy judging strong numbers of any breed Is there a Breed you have admired overseas that is not in Australia? – Originally there was a Picardy that I admired but they are now in Australia Which countries have you judged in or visited kennel’s or dog shows? – I have judged in numerous countries but instead of listing them all I have categorised them into Continents – USA, South East Asia, Europe I had the honour to be invited to visit the famous Winiwuk Boxer Kennels of Marion Ward Davies and Tim Hutchings in the Cotswold UK. This has led to a lifelong friendship with Tim who we see on a regular basis when overseas. The major shows I have attended are the World Dog Show in Milan, Westminster and Crufts (four times). However, we always take the opportunity to visit shows that may be on when we are in various countries. Favourite judging appointment? – All judging appointments are special as it is a privilege to be invited to judge a Group, Best in Show or Specialty Show of your own breed whether in Australia or overseas. No matter where the appointment is, the common thread is the hospitality June 2020

and fellowship that is given to you. This bond of camaraderie has formed lifelong friendship with some of the people which I have met on this journey. Best Judging Venue around the world? – This is a very debatable question, is this the venue’s scenery – e.g. outdoors (Santa Barbara) or an outdoor European setting, or the military coordination of running large scale events – World Dog Show, Crufts ? For me I would say Crufts as it has everything exhibitors and public enjoy. General Specials in the big ring is something to behold for the theatrics and overall impact of the event. Even the audience feels the euphoria when the lights go out and the spotlight illuminates the winning BIS dog. Is there a country you would like to judge at in the future? – I have been fortunate to judge in many countries and there is no where special on my bucket list to judge In what order do you see the list in relation to yourself Breeder, Exhibitor, Handler, Judge It is a natural progression to breed / exhibit successful specimens of a breed so that one can have the skills / knowledge to be able to evaluate exhibits in regard to their particular standards when judging. I now consider myself to be a handler/judge. Our breeding program is now over and has left us with many great wins and enjoyable memories which we can reflect upon. Do you have a funny story? I have many funny stories, but I think some are not to be repeated. So, I have selected this one. When away we often visit dog shows to ascertain broader view of all breeds. This particular day a judge fell ill with food poisoning and could not continue with his judging. A friend who we were with informed them I was a judge, so they asked me to step in. This photo is a genuine snap of me judging a FCI Show. An exhibitor did ask where was the judge and the finger was pointed to me. I was there in my best hot weather attire, shorts and sandals.. LOL

Kerry King Year obtained All Breed Status - 2011 Current Breed/s – Bull Terrier Breed/s you have owned? – Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Dobermann, Whippet Any other animals at home? - Sadly, I don’t have cats anymore, we have a nasty neighbour who sets rabbit traps. I do love cats though and hopefully in the near future I will get another one, for inside only. Oh, and I have a Galah who screams my name when the dogs are too close to his cage. Have you competed in any other canine disciplines? - Just conformation shows, obedience never took my fancy, however having bull terriers maybe I should’ve. What Breed do you love to judge but have never owned? - I love most breeds, don’t really have a favourite but then don’t have one that I dislike either. I enjoy a challenge so having large numbers of breeds is always good to make you think. Shelties are often good for this. Is there a Breed you have admired overseas that is not in Australia? - The Czechoslovakian wolf dog was interesting, His make and shape, his expression teeth and the way he moved was very much like you would imagine seeing in the wild. I quite like the American Rat Dog too, similar to the Tenterfield. Which countries have you judged in or visited kennel’s or dog shows? -– I have been very fortunate to have judged Bull Terrier Specialties in the USA, UK, South Africa, Czech Republic, Holland and New Zealand. In addition, I have judged all breeds in USA, South Africa, New Zealand, the Philippines and China. I have visited various kennels in the countries I have judged and have attended Silverwood (The biggest Bull Terrier Specialty in the USA) on two occasions. Favourite judging appointment? - My proudest moments in my judging career are judging The International Country Competition in Holland with over 300 bull terriers and most recently I was given the pleasure of judging the Sandawana Trophy for Best Coloured Bull Terrier at the UK Trophies, this a huge honour and even more so as I am the only Australian to have judged at the Trophy Show in UK. Page 16

Best Judging Venue around the world? – The best venue I have judged in was at the Trophy Show in the UK, indoors in a Hotel in Coventry, carpet floors, chandeliers etc. I also judged in a shopping centre in China, which was interesting. Is there a country you would like to judge at in the future? – India or maybe Germany would be nice. If I never have the opportunity to judge again, I am extremely happy with what I have achieved in my judging career. In what order do you see the list in relation to yourself Breeder, Exhibitor, Handler, Judge Judge, Breeder, Exhibitor, handler Do you have a funny story? One that comes to mind, is many years ago judging in Queensland, I arrived in the late afternoon the night before the show, and my luggage did not arrive. I was quite worried at what I was going to wear, knowing the thongs I had on weren’t going to be appropriate and no makeup could be disastrous. My mind was soon put at ease, when fellow judge Di Jovanovic came to the rescue, what size are you? Ok so am I, I have a pair of trousers and a shirt you can wear, what size shoes? Same as me good I have a spare pair of black shoes, I said I don’t have any toiletries or makeup, she said that’s fine you can share mine, but first of all do you drink? Silly question!! I have a little something to settle your nerves. I never forgot her generosity, who takes so many spare clothes when they judge?? I do now! And I make sure what I wear on the plane is suitable to judge in just in case and I always take a change of clothes in my carryon luggage. There have been a few stories I could tell but another one that comes to mind is when Connie Redhead and I judged in Ballina Queensland in torrential rain, we were covered in mud, our wet weather gear was permanently stained from the mud, we also had some pretty nifty welly boots that an exhibitor gave us. It was a fun weekend.

Valerie Carter Year obtained All Breed Status - 2003 Current Breed/s – Cocker Spaniel (American) Any other animals at home? - No Have you competed in any other canine disciplines? – Obedience classes with Boxers but not at competition level What Breed do you love to judge but have never owned? – Dobermann, love the elegance and power Which countries have you judged in or visited kennel’s or dog shows? – USA, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, China, New Zealand, Hungary Favourite judging appointment? – All have been different and great in their own way Best Judging Venue around the world? – Again, I enjoyed all places because they are unique Is there a country you would like to judge at in the future? – I’m scheduled to judge in Hungary in December 2020. I’m hoping it can go ahead. In what order do you see the list in relation to yourself Breeder, Exhibitor, Handler, Judge The list has changed over the years as time passes. So now it is Breeder, Exhibitor, Judge and no to Handler

I also judged the sweepstakes at the 2019 Field Spaniel National in Idaho, USA Best Judging Venue around the world? – Purina Farms, a great multifunction venue set in beautiful countryside in Missouri. And Crufts ! Is there a country you would like to judge at in the future? – Canada. Not dog related but I did see this very topical comment on Facebook: I can’t wait for the day I walk down the aisle and hear those magical words….”this is your captain speaking”

Lynette Niemann Year obtained All Breed Status - 2016 Current Breed/s – Schipperke Breed/s you have owned? – Welsh Corgi (Cardigan), Old English Sheepdog, Bearded Collie, Beagle, Rottweiler, Jack Russell Terrier, Portuguese Water Dog What Breed do you love to judge but have never owned? – Bracco Italiano Which countries have you judged in or visited kennel’s or dog shows? – New Zealand, Netherlands, Taiwan, China, Czech Republic, South Africa, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Japan June 2020

Favourite judging appointment? – Looking forward to the World Dog Show in 2021 Best Judging Venue around the world? – They are all so special, how could you pick just one. The time and effort put into these shows is a credit to all of them Is there a country you would like to judge at in the future? – Belgium, the Country of Origin for my breed Schipperke In what order do you see the list in relation to yourself Breeder, Exhibitor, Handler, Judge Breeder, Judge, Exhibitor, Handler Do you have a funny story? A few years back now I was judging at an Agricultural Show in central NSW. It was a beautiful sunny day except for one thing, the ring I was allocated was full of prickles, so bad the dogs couldn’t keep four feet on the ground. Not fair to the dogs or the handlers. I then stopped my ring and requested that I move the ring somewhere else. We all looked around to find an area free from prickles which was a lovely green carpark. Moving some cars made a ring which everyone was much happier with. All was going well until I started the Group Specials! Can you imagine the Group last dog just went in the ring, I am in the middle and without a warning a lady with a pram, small child in tow, walks through the ring right in front of me oblivious that there was a dog show in progress. Everyone just went quiet, but wait for it, there is more!! I just got handed the Best in Group ribbon holding it ready to run the Best in Group winner when a dressage horse and rider stroll into the ring, stopping right in front of me between the dogs and myself as if there was nothing going on with all these dogs and people around. Has a look around an casually moves on as if nothing had happened – well everyone just shook their heads and cracked up laughing. I would say this is the most interesting dog show I have every judged at !!

Canada, USA, New Zealand (North and South Islands) Thailand, England, Wales, Ireland, Philippines, Borneo. Favourite judging appointment? – The National Dog Show, presented by Purina, hosted by The Kennel Club of Philadelphia in November 2002, the oldest all breeds dog club in America I believe. This show was held at Fort Washington Expo Centre. Page 17

INTERVIEWS WITH ALL BREEDS JUDGES After judging the Borzois and Irish Wolfhounds in the morning I went for lunch and then changed into my dinner suit and bow tie, was fitted with a microphone and was first one in the arena to judge the Terrier Group. It was an enormous indoor venue with around 3,000 people in the audience. All of the group judging was televised right across America after the Macie Day Parade in New York, Someone in California recognised me and recorded the whole thing and sent me a copy. That was a bit of a buzz! Best Judging Venue around the world? – I prefer the outdoor facilities. Probably the best venue I have judged at outdoors was for a show called The Harvest Cluster, just outside San Francisco, where there were 57 judging rings going at the same time with golf buggies to move the judges from ring to ring. I judged there 4 days. The venue held all of the Motor homes, many trade stalls and food venues. Is there a country you would like to judge at in the future? – America again, I love their shows. In what order do you see the list in relation to yourself Breeder, Exhibitor, Handler, Judge Breeder, Judge, Exhibitor, Handler Do you have a funny story? Yes many funny stories but here is one. Approximately 10 years’ ago a Wolfhound breeder friend of ours died and left us two Irish Wolfhounds who were in Perth. Unfortunately, the airlines were unable to take two adult Wolfhounds from Perth to Adelaide but could fly them to Melbourne on one of the larger planes. A well-known Wolfhound breeder and a friend of ours had offered to drive over with me to pick up the dogs from Tullamarine Airport. We arrived in Melbourne after the 9 hour drive and stayed the night at my daughter and her husband’s home as we had made arrangements to pick up the dogs the following morning. We were up bright and early and were on our way home by 9 am with the dogs safe and sound in the back of the car. On the way back we pulled into a new service station just outside of Ararat, Victoria for refreshments and petrol. When we entered the takeaway food counter I left my friend to order the bacon and egg sandwiches and coffee while I paid a visit to the gents. When I returned, I was standing behind her and I heard her say to the lady behind the counter do you have any bits of food, like bacon, bacon rind, or bread that she could give to the dogs. I went and stood next to her and I said to the assistant “Was she asking you for food, she does this everywhere we go and I bet she told you we had dogs, we don’t have any dogs and she tries to get food for nothing this way, which is very embarrassing for me”. My friend nearly dropped her purse and looked at me in horror as did the assistant behind the counter. She came back with two bits of stale bread and slapped them on the counter and we left in a hurry. Once on the road she did see the funny side, but said she was never going to forgive me., but I think she has.

INTERVIEWS WITH ALL BREEDS JUDGES

Francis McEvoy Year obtained All Breed Status - 2005 Current Breed/s – Irish Wolfhounds Breed/s you have owned? – In my childhood, there were Irish Terriers, Kerry Blues and one smooth Foxie. After Anne and I married we had Irish Setters first, then the Irish Wolfhounds, our true love. My first show was in 1959, with my grandfather’s Kerry Blue – a Fermoy dog we called Dermot Any other animals at home? No Have you competed in any other canine disciplines? – Early on we were active in obedience at Dover Gardens. First, with the Setters (our young dog, we understand, was the first Irish to gain his CD). Later we worked one of our Wolfhounds to CD trials, but pulled out there – as a breed they aren’t natural candidates for the formal nature of Obedience training. It isn’t that they can’t do it – I have seen some impressive performances overseas – but generally they aren’t particularly interested. I have great admiration for those who persist and are successful. What Breed do you love to judge but have never owned? – There are a number of breeds which I particularly enjoy, perhaps because of their special characteristics. In my own group, I am entranced by the Azawakh, and have judged specialties in Italy and Germany. Wonderful, elegant and essentially primitive dogs. The Borzoi comes close as favourite! In the Working Dogs, the German Shepherd is such an iconic breed, majestic and free flowing. In terriers, probably the Kerry Blue – back to beginnings for me. In Gundogs, I love the Setter breeds, each with its own special qualities. In Toys, so many little dogs with big ideas! The Griffon and the Chinese Crested capture me – for different reasons. In Utility, I love the cleanness of the Boxer and the strength of the Malamute. In Non Sporting – how could I go beyond the Great Dane! Is there a Breed you have admired overseas that is not in Australia? – I judged a small number – but high quality – of Cirneco Dell’Etna in Germany. Almost a smaller version of the Pharaoh Hound, they are a Sicilian hound, used on rabbits and small game, most attractive in outline and temperament Which countries have you judged in or visited kennel’s or dog shows? My first international show was to judge at the Hound Show in New Zealand (1986), and then at the Irish Wolfhound Club of Ireland, in 1987 – an extraordinary honour. Since then I have judged both Specialties and All Breed shows in the UK, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Canada, USA, Thailand and New Zealand. Favourite judging appointment? – Every judging appointment carries its own flavour and tone. Wherever you are, it is such a pleasure to ‘find’ that special dog, more particularly if you can be the one to set that dog on the start of a stellar career. However, if I had to choose only one show, it would be Donaueschingen, ‘the world’s greatest sighthound show’, with entries of some 1600+ across the Sighthound breeds. A wonderful show, wonderful grounds, June 2020

superb dogs, the best in Europe on display and a great panel of judges from around the world Best Judging Venue around the world? – I would like to nominate two venues, as they represent ‘the best’ from two different aspects. First, an indoor venue – and I might be accused of some bias here – the Adelaide Royal, in the David Roche Pavilion and the Basketball stadium. Terrific surface, sprung floor, big rings, great screen for visuals and surrounded by the tiered seating. So very professional. An outdoor venue: harder to choose. Probably Lompoc, in California. Big, beautifully grassed rings shaded by tall deciduous trees, sited to just catch the gentle afternoon breezes. Is there a country you would like to judge at in the future? – I have not judged much in Asia – I have mostly been working when the invitations came. However, Japan would be high on my list. I would also love to judge in Russia. In what order do you see the list in relation to yourself Breeder, Exhibitor, Handler, Judge Difficult. We breed Irish Wolfhounds. I show them – going to Specialties interstate to challenge what other breeders are producing, and to see for myself. Similarly, I judge Specialties around the world and have used the knowledge and contacts so gained to further our breeding program. Handler – I do what I can! Do you have a funny story? So many funny stories – from being washed away in a massive thunderstorm while camping at Erskine Pk (Sydney); to meeting Sheila Seale (one of the foundation persons of the breed post war in Ireland), who met me as I came out of the ring, in Dublin, to offer me a hot whiskey! Perhaps this one, locally … I had new glasses, multifocal, and had trouble judging distances. Going round the ring at one of the country shows, I misjudged the rope barrier and took a fairly heavy tumble. And then, going round a second time – same result, perhaps not as graceful! The third time round, the spectators (I hope they enjoyed the falls!) took pity on me and as I approached each corner called out ‘turn, turn now’! Country shows are much more fun!

Wendy Baker Year obtained All Breed Status 2017 Current Breed/s – Griffon Bruxellois Breed/s you have owned? – Dachshund Long Haired, followed by all other 5 varieties of Dachshund. Cairn Terrier, Norfolk Terrier, Fox Terrier (Wire), Mini Schnauzer, Dalmatians, Airedale Terrier Any other animals at home? No Have you competed in any other canine disciplines? – No What Breed do you love to judge but have never owned? – GSD ...There is, for me, just something about the balance and symmetry of the breed when in combination on the move that draws me to it. But the Azawakh, would be a dry close second, for their pure raw and primitive appearance and nature, again a dog whose movement gives me Goosebumps Page 19

INTERVIEWS WITH ALL BREEDS JUDGES Is there a Breed you have admired overseas that is not in Australia? – Thai Bangkaew, Thai Ridgeback, Indian Caravan Dog, are stand outs as I have had the pleasure of judging these breeds overseas Which countries have you judged in or visited kennel’s or dog shows? – Europe is special to me for its history and buildings. China, Japan, Philippines and India for their culture, hustle and bustle. South Africa for its diversity and unique animals. New Zealand for its breathtaking scenery Favourite judging appointment? – Two appointments stand at the top first was judging my beloved Griffon Breed Specialty in Brno with 108 entries, the other a trip much closer, to Newcastle quite some moons back Best Judging Venue around the world? – WOW, that’s a hard one as I have judged in some very good venues, with wonderfully lavish ring set ups, and general specials ring..... From my experience for pomp n spectacle Europe does it very well. However, I have not yet witnessed Crufts or Westminster Is there a country you would like to judge at in the future? - That’s easy, to judge Griffons at Crufts is a lifelong ambition, so UK for me In what order do you see the list in relation to yourself Breeder, Exhibitor, Handler, Judge This seems easy.... exhibitor/handler ... Breeder .... Judge.... However, each lends itself to experience for the other 3 (once all 4 have been achieved).... I see myself as 3 separates .... when exhibiting my own dog I am in that niche of exhibitor, handler, breeder ..... presenting to the judge the best I can of the breed, in the best possible condition, coat, handled to its best advantage... When I am the judge, I am using my experience gained as handler, exhibitor, breeder, along with the education from training for the breed/group to find the exhibit that fits best to my knowledge. .... So I believe they are all equally as important regardless of if the last step to judge is taken. Do you have a funny story? Where to start ??? .....After 35+ years in the dog world, there have been a few .... there are the socks on the window of the car .... yeah probably cannot go there — or the exhibitor with the .... nope probably get sued for that one — or there was the Co-Judge who ..... nope his second wife doesn’t know yet. — Let’s just say there have been many many funny stories, enjoyable and happy times and I am looking forward to helping create some more...

Which countries have you judged in or visited kennel’s or dog shows? – USA, Mexico, Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Finland, Japan, New Zealand Favourite judging appointment? – Either Judging in Japan in 2017 or Judging at their National Show in Sao Paulo, Brazil. But the best show I have been to is the Boxer National in USA (was better than the Rhodesian Ridgeback National – shhhh!) Best Judging Venue around the world? – The motels in USA they hold events at are hard to beat as they have conformation, obedience, agility, lure coursing all at the same venue along with your accommodation and restaurants Is there a country you would like to judge at in the future? – Westminster Dog Show in USA. Canada also springs to mind. I was contracted to judge in Canada 2019 the Rhodesian Ridgeback Specialty and at an All Breeds Show. Unfortunately, I have an ongoing problem leaving my beloved dogs for that long so did not go. So, whilst the opportunities have been there many times for me to judge overseas, I rarely accept. I have always wanted to judge at the Transylvania Dog Show (Dracula Dog Show held at a castle) & Split Dog Show in Croatia. In what order do you see the list in relation to yourself Breeder, Exhibitor, Handler, Judge Breeder, Exhibitor, Judge, Handler
